2. Task 1 - Research
• op art- short for optical art is a
style of visual art that uses optical
illusions, these works are abstract
with many of the better known
pieces in black and white. Gives
the impression of movement,
hidden images, flashing and
vibrating patterns.

The magazine de stijl became a
vehicle for Mondrian's ideas of
art. The first series of articles
defined his aims and used,
perhaps for the first time the
term ”neo plasticism”.
Pop art- pop art is an art
movement that emerged in the
UK and the US in the mid to late
1950’s but exploded in the
1960’s, this presented a
challenge to traditional fine
artists by including imagery from
popular and mass culture such
as advertising, comic books and
mundane cultural objects.

• Pop art emerged in the mid 1950’s in the UK and slightly later in the US towards the back end of the 1950’s, whist
reaching its peak in the 1960’s and began its clash with dominant artistic ideas at the time, the leaders of the
revolt were New York artists Andy Warhol and Ray Lichentstien who presented their ideas through mass culture
and popular topics at the time such as movies, adverting, product packaging and comic books for their imagery
and ideas. For example Andy Warhols Campbell's soup, which was created November 1961 and March or April
1962 which resembles the mass produced. When he first presented this piece he did so by placing the canvases on
shelves, like products in a supermarket, he famously said “I don’t think art should be only for the select few,” he
claimed, “I think it should be for the mass of the American people.” and this was represented in this piece.
• modernist critics didn’t like the ideas the likes of Warhol and Lichtenstein were proposing as they were seen as
low subject manners and too simplistic compared to the works of the fine art community, however pop art
brought new ideas and ways of presenting work that is seen as one of the first manifestations of postmodernism.

4. Task 1 – Research – Web source US vs UK pop
• British pop is seen as different from US even though of the similar subject matters, early British pop art was
fuelled by viewing American culture from a far whilst American artists were inspired by just by living within
the culture at the time. Pop artists tried to move away from the ideas and emphasis on personal feelings and
personal symbolism and instead focus on popular themes and topics.

• “ it was fabulous: an art opening with no art”- this was a quote what Andy had said
about the opening of his exhibition, this suggests that he was very pleased.
• Andy published his first novel in 1968.- favourite pages of the books reviewers were
listed on the back cover, this is to suggest the best parts for the people who have brought
the book
• “nobody had even cared that the paintings were off the walls. I was really glad I was
making movies instead”
• Popular - postmodern - expendable -gimmicky
• wanted to turn trivial and commonplace into art

• Add notes here on how you stuck to your plan/had to change your
plan and why
• I stuck to my plan with the ideas I generated within my group however there were some slight changes along
the way for example I was going to include a British and a American flag a that is where pop art originated
however I decided against this as the poster would look to busy, I was also going to include the prime
minister and president from the time where pop art blew up but once again decided against this as I thought
there would be to much going on. I also changed my plan to add shadows onto words for effect whilst also
adding a glow feature to certain words

• Use these slides to show your planning of your products, think about
structure and the components for each product [evidence for this

I want my piece to have a very colourful background of Marylyn
Monroe with details about the location and time of the event in the
bottom right I also want key words related to pop art around her
mouth in bold writing to make it stand out, they should all be in
different colours to stand out.

• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you
solved these
• 1 learning how to use photoshop for the first time which I struggled
with at first but overcame this by asking questions to others aswell as
the teacher
• 2 work deleted itself at the start of the project but was able to restart
quickly

• Dave gave me some feedback on my poster project and showed me
some things about the general basics of Photoshop I believe his
feedback worked and enabled me to learn more about the
application.

Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
To take a book out you need to first select your book then take it to the
desks at the front and they will sort it out for you and notify you of
when it needs to be returned.

• Everything is stored onto one drive and can be accessed anywhere if
you have a one drive account.

• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]: I learn best in either a quiet room or
just with headphones in, I also need to be able to ask questions as I
think having someone look at my work and say what’s good and bad
about it really helps me improve in my studies.

20. Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study? When the room is loud I find it
hard to focus, I cant have a tv show or someone speaking whilst I am
trying to work as it just disrupts my flow.
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies? I work
effectively when I am allowed to put headphones in and just get on
with the work, it allows me to just zone out and get my thoughts onto
a page.
