2. Research
โข The research allowed me to see existing products and draw ideas from professional works. I
looked at a variety of music based magazines which of course was the genre which I decided
to focus my work around. By doing so it allowed me to look at what their articles were about
and how they were laid out. As well as the design ideas for front covers. I noticed that all of
them were fairly similar in that articles were all focused around a particular artist and told
their story. They were all laid out in columns, an essential feature for a magazine which I later
used in my own piece. A couple of the cases I studied also included quotes from the
particular artists that said article was focused around. By doing initial research it sparked
numerous ideas In my head about the general layout of my magazine front cover and double
page spread, because I had never done anything like this before I was exited to put my ideas
into practise and create a realistic looking magazine with artistic direction. A weakness to my
research perhaps may be that I only really looked at one type of magazine which was of
course a music based magazine, if I broadened my research into different areas it may of
resulted in a different overall outcome, however I am already very happy with how my
product turned out and in my own opinion it ticked all the boxes I initially intended.
3. Planning
โข The planning stage went very smoothly for me as I already knew what kind of magazine I was
looking to develop which was a music magazine focused around the genre drill/uk rap. I knew
what kind of layout I was going to do and how my text was going to be organised which was
of course in columns. A real strength to my planning was that I already had a rough idea of
what is was I was going to create and what my time frame to do so was. I spent roughly a day
or two planning which left me plenty of time to use Photoshop and finish with time to go.
Something that may of helped me with my planning may have been if I was more open
minded going into the project and looking at other genres I could of potentially focused my
final piece around. In the experiments I created a front cover and double page spread
focused around the UFC which is a mixed martial arts franchise which draws millions of views
each year. This topic is something I know particularly a lot about having being an avid fan and
watcher of the sport for years. The initial design and layout of both my front cover and
double page spread worked very well for me and was really impressed in my self of how it
turned out, by doing these experiments it allowed me to get to grips with the Photoshop
software and seeing what was effective and what wasnโt so good. I took some elements of
my experiments into my final piece which will reflect immensely if you compare the two. by
doing these experiments it put me in a position where I felt confident I could produce a high
level front cover and double spread which I feel like I achieved. I wouldn'tโt of been possible
without the planning I had put into it.
4. Time Management
โข Overall my time management skills for this project were fairly good however I lagged a little
behind on the final evaluation missing the deadline slightly. For the most part I used my time
very effectively in this project utilising class time well and keeping up and at points ahead of
the rest of the class. a main factor of why I feel like I did well on this project was because of
my general utilisation of time in class as there was very little points where I found my self just
sat there doing nothing which I feel really did reflect in the standard of my work for this
project as well personally enjoying this project a lot more than the previous one focused
around audio. What allowed me to stay on track was the fact that I was enjoying what I was
doing in the classroom, something which has been very rare over the course of my time in
education as I often find myself blankly staring at a wall thinking to myself โwhy am I even
hereโ this project however was different as I was creating something I had a genuine interest
In even though I do accept it is not everyone's cup of tea as peoples taste in music differs
from person to person and I do understand that the particular style of music that I focused
my project around isn't for everyone just as other peoples taste in music makes me want to
throw up at the sound of it. Time management overall has never been my strong point as if I
donโt have a genuine interest in what I'm doing I'm more likely to fall behind on work as well
as turning up late in general, but at least I attend and complete all the work in what some
people would consider limited time due to my own procrastination.
5. Technical Qualities
I created a magazine that was meant to carry a very gritty, urban kind of feel. I did this because uk rap
as a whole is very street and I wanted to reflect this within my work. Compared to similar style music
magazines they may look more smooth and professional, but if I wanted mine to also look like this to
be in convention with other music magazines I would of, however I think because of the urban, gritty
aspect to my piece it really would drive towards the direction of my intended target audience. In my
opinion it does look like the kind of magazine that would appeal to people in corner shops I n London
as well as other major cityโs. comparing to a magazine like GQ for example, which is a really popular
magazine, completely on the other side of the scale in terms of target audience. It is a smooth looking
magazine intended to draw in professional people to read their in depth articles over a variety of
topics. If you look at any of their covers you will see that the layout as a whole is fairly simplistic with
its white and black colour scheme. But this simplicity is quite key to their image as it looks slick,
modern and clean in all aspects due to the target audience it is intended for which in my opinion would
be males aged 25-60 in the business man model. My magazine would be aimed at people roughly 15-
22 and would need more of a vibrant colour scheme whilst still keeping the urban, rough around the
edges approach that I intended.
6. Aesthetic Qualities
As a whole I am very happy with how my piece turned out in its end product as it met my
expectations and vision in every way. I think it is exactly the kind of magazine that would appeal
to people interested in uk rap because of its gritty, urban approach to the subject. The front cover
in general turned out perfect I believe I selected a suitable image that worked on the cover. I
chose a picture of a recording studio as the background and blurred it because of course my
magazine is focused around music. All the text on the cover stands out very well, I even added
somewhat of a blood splatter effect to the word โdrillโ which looks aesthetically pleasing to the
reader. Also there isnโt too much going on in my cover and doesnโt look to busy with content and
over crowded. The double page spread In my opinion also works very well and looks directly
linked to the front cover also having that gritty, urban feel to it. The article on there as a whole
worked well for what I was trying to do, which was the story of a young rising project set to take
over the scene by storm. I think I tried to make the story line similar to other artists ive seen
coming out of different areas in London. The story line was creative and was laid out in columns
effectively. They all lined up and was no errors in spelling or punctuation. I think a way I couldโve
improved my work would perhaps be by doing another double page spread this times with
articles focused on real like uk artists instead of my made up character. In conclusion I am very
happy with how my piece turned out aesthetically as a whole and really suited the dynamic I was
aiming towards.
7. Audience Appeal
My piece as a whole is suited to my target audience in definitely, with its gritty urban dynamic that
would fly of the shelves in corner shops in London and other major cityโs. I believe the content on my
double page spread would appeal to readers as my story line was that the artist it was focused around
had been the biggest uk rap artist over the last year and because of this readers would be very
interested in the topic as a whole. I think aesthetically it would really grab the audiences attention and
make them want to indulge inside as I have already been told by peers it looks like a real underground
music magazine that would do well if it were to become a reality. The direction I think I decided to take
my magazine worked really well for this project as if I were to look at the magazine and double page
spread I would certainly be interested in it as I tried making my target audience myself and tried making
something that would appeal to me I really did enjoy it as a whole and am very interested in seeing
what the rest of the course has in for me. This project along with the music video project really stood
out to me and I really enjoyed both of them, in my final project I believe at this stage I am leaning
towards both a music video and a magazine cover with the first been the most likely as I found the
dynamic of shooting footage and editing it really fun as a whole.
