PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this
could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt
with problems with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down?
How did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have
worked better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you
changed your video? How/why?
TECHNICAL
I am using my iPhone SE 2020 as my camera equipment, in
order to get less shaky footage I have used a trypot
(unfortunately only in further shots which makes other look
worse than I intended them to look.
As a backup option for my main camera equipment I have
charged and carried with me an iPhone 7, fortunately I was
able to avoid using it as my main equipment worked fine.
I had troubles with how well some of locations were lit, I was
to able to provide the set with specific light which resulted in
some sequences looking darker than others did.
LOGISTICAL
Apart from the light issue (caused by a lack of proper light
source) mentioned earlier, I have experienced an
inconvenience of one of my actors not being able to show up
on set. This issue was primarily caused by my lack of
organisation during early stages of the project.
I have not notify the oldest member of my cast about the date
of shooting early enough for them to be able to make it on
set, as a result I was forced to slightly change my initial idea,
casting a slightly younger actress in the place of the old one.
That logistical error was something that influenced my
project enough for me to see it as a more than a
disappointing, as I think the project would benefit from a
bigger cast and a more extended age variations cast wise.
PERSONNEL
The issue of one actress not being able to arrive on set was
the main problem I have experience when it comes to the
personnel of my project.
The replacement actress however was easy to work wit, but
still not quite the perfect fit for the role. I struggled a little
when working with her, as well as other members of the cast.
It was a result of my lack of experience with the role of
directing, as well as the fact that most of my actors were not
experienced in the field of acting.
The most challenging of all was working with a 9-years old
actress, mainly because of her age. However, I believe I was
able to get what I needed from all of my cast members,
making the final footage more than satysfying.
PLANNING
I believe that the planning stage of my overall project heavily
influenced my project. Storyboard I have produced during my
planning was a huge help when I started my production, it
gave me an idea of what shots specifically I need to obtain,
as well as how will I later proceed to edit them.
I think however, that the storyboard itself could have been,
and should have been way bore detailed than it ended being.
More shot descriptions and sketches would lead to better
organisation and less spontaneous work on se that I allowed
myself to.
EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
• Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
What I like about the way I edited my final project is the fact I
have managed to pace everything in sync with the music.
I have considered beat drops and all of that is visible in the
final product.
The slow-motion effect added on top of the footage work
really nicely not only with the song itself, but is also
aesthetically pleasing. I find it a simple solution that
massively benefited my overall production.
Another beneficial decision I have made during the editing
process was the use of black background in-between the
shots at the very beginning. I think it provides a cinematic
feel, as well as makes a good opening of the product.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE? [3
EXAMPLES]
One problem I have encountered during the process of
editing was the realisation that some oof my shots do not
necessarily fit the fast paced parts of the song.
I have discovered that not enough of the shots were
suitable for the chorus, however by making them quickly
switch between each other I feel like I have achieved
somewhat a suitable effect.
I have also realised that shots of the dancing girl I have
recorded, as well as one of a boy dancing in his room,
were too dark in comparison to other scenes recorded
outside.
I have attempt to bright them up in post production,
however they did not end up looking as good as I wanted.
Similarly, one specific shot of a women sitting on a chair
ended up being slightly out of focus. I have tried to make it
look sharper, but failed in attempt to do so.
NEXT STEPS…
What are the main things you’ve learned from this project? Pick a minimum
of 5 to discuss…
A big thing I have learned throughout the process of working on this project
was editing recorded footage so it fits with the chosen song. I have find it to
be an interesting new experience.
Working with a younger actor was also a completely new experience. I think
in the future I will avoid working with children before I gain more directorial
experience.
Following on the topic of directing, I have learned how to direct dance
scenes. I found that the best way of approaching these types of sequences
is to allow my actors to dance as much naturally as possible, playing music
on set is a big help.
I have expanded my knowledge of using an editing software, I can easily say
that working on my musing video improved my editorial skills quite a lot.
Lastly, I have leaned the importance of planning your project in extreme
detail before stepping into the reality of production. With no mind map or
story board prepared earlier, I would have troubles obtaining the footage I
needed.
