thGAP - BAbyss in Moderno!! Transgenic Human Germline Alternatives ProjectMarc Dusseiller Dusjagr
thGAP - Transgenic Human Germline Alternatives Project, presents an evening of input lectures, discussions and a performative workshop on artistic interventions for future scenarios of human genetic and inheritable modifications.
To begin our lecturers, Marc Dusseiller aka "dusjagr" and Rodrigo Martin Iglesias, will give an overview of their transdisciplinary practices, including the history of hackteria, a global network for sharing knowledge to involve artists in hands-on and Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) working with the lifesciences, and reflections on future scenarios from the 8-bit computer games of the 80ies to current real-world endeavous of genetically modifiying the human species.
We will then follow up with discussions and hands-on experiments on working with embryos, ovums, gametes, genetic materials from code to slime, in a creative and playful workshop setup, where all paticipant can collaborate on artistic interventions into the germline of a post-human future.

3. RESEARCH
With my research, I feel that looking at music videos from artists of
the same genre was really beneficial for me as it made me think of
different meanings behind the song of choice and how that could be
displayed visually. An example was SUGAR by BROCKHAMPTON. If I
hadn’t of watched this video, I wouldn’t have thought of the idea of
a simple backdrop and keeping the shots simple.
With my research, I also tried to look at different music videos from
different genres to try and gain inspiration. I think this was helpful
especially in terms of colour themes. The other genre I watched a lot
of videos from was K-pop. The videos are normally fairly bright
which is where I got the inspiration to use bright colours to show the
overwhelming feeling of anxiety. Using a wide range of music video
for inspiration was a strength for me as it gave me more places to
take inspiration from.
4. RESEARCH
I think a weakness in my research was not taking enough notes
on the videos I was watching. This would’ve been helpful as I
could keep track and remember the aspects of the video I liked
and took inspiration from. Since I didn’t note the key elements of
the videos I watched, I spent a lot of time rewatching the videos
and trying recall what I found interesting or took interest from. I
could’ve spent this time planning my video or even watching
other videos to take more inspiration from. If I were to do this
project again, I would be more organised and take more notes.
5. RESEARCH
With my case study, I think as much as it was beneficial to look
at a different genre for music videos, it would have helped me
more to do a case study on an artist of the same genre.
Doing a case study on ENHYPEN helped me learn more about
different camera shots and the effects these have such as an
downwards shot on someone can show fear or loneliness.
However, the videos I did my case study on didn’t match the
idea I had in my head regarding my own video. If I were to do
the case study again, I would chose an artist under the indie
genre rather than K-pop.
6. PLANNING
I think I planned my music video well but when it came
to sticking to the plan, I diverted slightly. I think this may
be due to accidently leaving the plan at home and having
to recall it form memory. However, since I spent a lot of
time on planning, I remembered a fair bit of it. The
storyboard I made really helped me see what I wanted to
achieve in paper form. If I were to do this project again,
that would be an idea I would repeat. Also, since I could
see what my shots would look like, I could see if the
shots I had in mind wouldn’t work with the music; I
couldn't do that without the storyboard but when I did, it
would be too late to change it.
The use of a shot list was also very useful in terms of
keeping organised. I saw this as almost a to-do list for
the shots I had to take. This helped with my time
management also because I could see how much I
needed to film and made an estimate of how much time
would be needed to complete this.
7. PLANNING
I think I could’ve improved how thorough my plan was.
With my shot list and storyboard, I thought that I had
enough detail on there for it to cover for the whole video.
However, when I went to edit, I found that the shots were
too long furthermore, making the video fairly boring. If I
were to do this again, I would think about different shots
as well as backups if the shots weren’t what I was
expecting them to look like.
8. PLANNING
A weakness of my planning was sticking to the plan that
I created. The plan I had included all of the ideas I
wanted to be in the video so I'm not sure why I neglected
the plan as much as I did. If I were to have followed the
plan, I feel my music video would’ve looked a lot cleaner
and would’ve had different shots which would’ve made
the video more enjoyable to watch.
9. TIME MANAGEMENT
I think I had good time management. I completed my
filming within two days so I then had enough time to edit
and refilm if needed. I did have to refilm a few shots but
with my good time management, I could do that without
panicking about time. I think if I were to have been given
more time, I would’ve been able to acquire more props
and possibly more people willing to be apart of the
video. The props I would’ve gotten hold of, such as a old
TV, could’ve made the video more visually appealing.
With editing, I would’ve tried out different effects such as
overlays to see if it added more depth to my video.
10. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
With my video, I always wanted some of my
shots to be out of focus to help with the
meaning behind the song. However, I didn’t
want the whole video to be out of focus
because it could’ve potentially confused the
audience into thinking that it was accidental.
In terms of lighting and the backdrop, I
wasn’t very happy with the outcome of it
as I found it look wrong and didn’t match
the idea I had. I think the lighting was too
bright and contrasted the black backdrop
in a way that wasn’t pleasant to the eye. If
I were able to change it now, I would lower
the brightness of the lights to make less
intense.
11. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
There are certain points in my video where ‘frail state
of mind.’ is in the centre of the screen. I wanted to this
to give the audience a break to process what they’ve
just watched. I felt this was effective and would be
something I would keep in if I were to do this project
again.
12. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I think my music video looks good and I achieved the vision I had in
my head. I like the mix of the camcorder an the Canon camera. I
also like how the video is easy-going and you are able to
understand the meaning of the song with the video.
In term of improvement, I think the video would look better if I used
different clips rather than reusing old ones. My aim was to show
anxiety through the fast paced clips but I think it just looks slightly
boring. If I were to do this project again, I would spend more time
on selecting clips that are more relevant to the song as I feel I
drifted from the original meaning of the song.
13. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I like the blurriness in this
shot as I feel it can show
how anxiety can effect your
memory. I also really like the
colouring of this shot, its
mundane yet enjoyable; its
not too harsh on the eyes.
I like this shot due to its
contrast against the song. I
think it gives some humour to a
song that’s quite intense. I
think if I were to go back and
edit this, I would change the
colouring slightly so it would be
more intense to contrast
14. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think my video would appeal to
my target audience since my video
has certain aspects which are
common in indie music video such
as the use of camcorders and
short bursts of clips.
My video would also appeal to my
target audience because of the
distortion within the video. An
example of this would be the
different short shots of different
parts of the face to demonstrate
trying to focus while having intense
anxiety.
16. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
I like the way you cut images of passing time (the blurred scenery in a
moving vehicle) and the symbolism of reaching out to others in the
phone. I also liked the band name on the phone too.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
You could’ve shown more of a contradiction between outer
expressions of I'm fine and the inner fragility of the mind.

19. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that I should’ve displayed more of contradiction between the
what goes on in the head compared to outside.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
20. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
If I were to make changes to my video, I would
film more lip syncing shots. I would also film
more distorted shots to show distress
furthermore, displaying the meaning of the song
more.
