Introduction
What is a microgrid?
Microgrid is a small utility grid used for providing power to smaller
communities and connected to the utility grid.
Microgrid uses renewable energy sources like solar power,wind and
Hydropower to produce electricity.
Major Components
1.Load
2.Point of Common Coupling
3.Power Sources
4.Battery
5.Controller
6.Inverter
Operating Modes
Grid Connected Mode
❖ The utility grid is active
❖ The static switch is closed
❖ The power is supplied from utility grid.
❖ This is the normal operating mode of
a microgrid.
Operating Modes contd..
Island Mode
❖ Utility grid is disconnected
❖ Static Switch is opened
❖ The power is supplied from Microgrid
❖ This will be useful in events of natural disasters.
Need of Microgrid
❖ Transmission loss is reduced.
❖ It cuts the emissions provided by non-renewable energy sources.
❖ Provides high quality and reliable energy source.
Environmental Aspects
❖ It encourages the use of renewable energy
❖ Land size required is considerably reduced.
❖ Co2 are reduced.
Utility Grid vs MicroGrid
❖ The efficiency of utility grid is very low as compared to micro grid.
❖ Large amount of power is wasted in form of heat energy in utility grid.
❖ Microgrids are located near loads , thus reducing transmission length and
losses.
A Microgrid in India
Power parks
❖ For larger loads,it is advisable to connect many microgrids.
❖ The interconnection of many microgrids is called power park.
❖ The advantage is that it gives high stability and control over power.
Advantages
1. Power efficiency is improved.
2.Less or no emissions as it uses renewable energy sources.
3.It has high resilience to recover from natural disasters.
4.It can isolate itself from utility grid and provide power to the loads within
the microgrid.
5.It can prevent utility grid failure.
6.Excess power can be sold to utility grid.
Disadvantages
1.Microgrids requires battery to store energy and it results in increased area and
requires frequent maintenance..
2.The synchronization of microgrid with utility grid is difficult.
3.The protection of microgrid is difficult.
4.There is a danger of reverse current flow.
Challenges
❖ It is based on wind energy and solar energy but both are variable.
❖ In remote areas with no grid or no backup the user has to be without
electricity until the problem resolves.
The Future
❖ Three people have been died due to power cut during dialysis in
puducherry. So it can save lives when installed in hospital.
❖ In africa there is only less grid. It can be installed instead of utility grid.
❖ We are going to drive more electrical vehicles in future, so a power station
for cars can be connected in the microgrid.

  • 3. Introduction What is a microgrid? Microgrid is a small utility grid used for providing power to smaller communities and connected to the utility grid. Microgrid uses renewable energy sources like solar power,wind and Hydropower to produce electricity.

  • 5. Operating Modes Grid Connected Mode ❖ The utility grid is active ❖ The static switch is closed ❖ The power is supplied from utility grid. ❖ This is the normal operating mode of a microgrid.
  • 6. Operating Modes contd.. Island Mode ❖ Utility grid is disconnected ❖ Static Switch is opened ❖ The power is supplied from Microgrid ❖ This will be useful in events of natural disasters.
  • 7. Need of Microgrid ❖ Transmission loss is reduced. ❖ It cuts the emissions provided by non-renewable energy sources. ❖ Provides high quality and reliable energy source.
  • 8. Environmental Aspects ❖ It encourages the use of renewable energy ❖ Land size required is considerably reduced. ❖ Co2 are reduced.
  • 9. Utility Grid vs MicroGrid ❖ The efficiency of utility grid is very low as compared to micro grid. ❖ Large amount of power is wasted in form of heat energy in utility grid. ❖ Microgrids are located near loads , thus reducing transmission length and losses.

  • 11. Power parks ❖ For larger loads,it is advisable to connect many microgrids. ❖ The interconnection of many microgrids is called power park. ❖ The advantage is that it gives high stability and control over power.
  • 12. Advantages 1. Power efficiency is improved. 2.Less or no emissions as it uses renewable energy sources. 3.It has high resilience to recover from natural disasters. 4.It can isolate itself from utility grid and provide power to the loads within the microgrid. 5.It can prevent utility grid failure. 6.Excess power can be sold to utility grid.
  • 13. Disadvantages 1.Microgrids requires battery to store energy and it results in increased area and requires frequent maintenance.. 2.The synchronization of microgrid with utility grid is difficult. 3.The protection of microgrid is difficult. 4.There is a danger of reverse current flow.
  • 14. Challenges ❖ It is based on wind energy and solar energy but both are variable. ❖ In remote areas with no grid or no backup the user has to be without electricity until the problem resolves.
  • 15. The Future ❖ Three people have been died due to power cut during dialysis in puducherry. So it can save lives when installed in hospital. ❖ In africa there is only less grid. It can be installed instead of utility grid. ❖ We are going to drive more electrical vehicles in future, so a power station for cars can be connected in the microgrid.
