INTRODUCTION 
Smart microgrid helps us to store and distribute 
the renewable energy. It is modern, small scale 
version of centralized electricity system. Like 
the bulk power grid,smart microgrids 
distribute and regulate the flow of electricity to 
consumers.

BACKGROUND 
The Main Campus of the Illinois Institute of 
Technology in Chicago was experiencing 
one to three major outages per year, each 
costing an estimated,$520,000 in restoration 
expenses. The remedy would be extremely 
expensive.

MODE OF OPERATIONS 
There are three modes of operations for 
Smart Microgrid: 
•Grid Connected Mode 
•Island Connected Mode 
•Emergency Mode

GRID CONNECTED 
MODE 
In this mode grid is directly connected to 
supply. It determines the appropriate set 
points for individual generators, storage 
elements, and loads in the microgrid. Its also 
supply constant power mode for all DER 
(Distribute energy resource).

ISLAND CONNECTED 
MODE 
This mode having two DER. It performing 
operation in MASTER/SLAVE mode. 
DER 1: Transfer supply to master mode. 
DER2: Transfer supply to slave mode.

ISLAND OPRATION IN 
MASTER MODE 
When island connected to the master mode 
its behave like a master controller. It 
provides the interface between the system 
controller and individual load generator.

ISLAND OPRATION IN 
SLAVE MODE 
When island connected to the slave mode its 
behave like a slave controller . 
There are four type of slave controller: 
 Local Generators 
 Storage devices 
 Loads 
 Microgrid switch or breaker

Emergency Mode 
In this mode the response will depend 
upon the need of supply system. The response 
can include: changing generator conditions, 
reducing load, or actually disconnecting from 
the supply system.

Mainly there are two component of Smart 
Microgrid: 
1: Distributed Energy Resources 
I. Generation 
II. Storage 
2: Flexible Loads 
I. Metering

III. Protection 
IV. Communication

Distributed Energy 
Generation 
Distributed energy generates electricity 
from many small energy sources, such as 
fossil fuel, nuclear, large solar power plants 
and hydropower plants. Distributed generation 
allow collection of energy from many sources 
and may give lower environmental impacts 
and improved security of supply.

DISTRIBUTION OF 
ENERGY

STORAGE 
Grid energy storage send excess electricity 
over the electricity transmission grid to 
temporary electricity storage sites that 
subsequently become energy suppliers when 
electricity demand is greater.

FLEXIBLE LOADS 
The identification and appropriate control 
of flexible loads can be employed to 
balance energy and demand. The system to 
meet the demand not only by changing the 
generated energy but also by controlling the 
load when necessary.

WORKING 
A microgrid is a localized grouping of 
electricity generation, energy storage, 
and loads that normally operates 
connected to a traditional centralized 
grid (macrogrid). This single point of 
common coupling with the macrogrid 
can be disconnected. The microgrid 
can then function autonomously.

 Communication standards and protocols. 
 Large scale energy storage. 
 Participation in energy markets. 
 Distributed Generation and Alternative 
energy sources. 
 Demand Response and Dynamic Pricing

ADVANTAGES 
 Locally secure. 
 Differentiation of electrical service possible. 
 Allow easier integration of renewable. 
 Increases reliability 
DISADVANTAGES 
 Can be expensive 
 Work yet to be done in controls, operation and 
protection.

Future scope 
The microgrid structure makes it a viable 
platform for large entities to reduce energy 
costs and generate revenue through the sale 
of energy during periods of peak demand. 
Additionally, microgrids can efficiently and 
effectively provide "off-grid" areas with 
regular access to electricity as well as "keep 
the lights on" in times of crisis for critical 
applications like a hospital.

  • 4. INTRODUCTION Smart microgrid helps us to store and distribute the renewable energy. It is modern, small scale version of centralized electricity system. Like the bulk power grid,smart microgrids distribute and regulate the flow of electricity to consumers. 4

  • 6. BACKGROUND The Main Campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago was experiencing one to three major outages per year, each costing an estimated,$520,000 in restoration expenses. The remedy would be extremely expensive. 6
  • 7. MODE OF OPERATIONS There are three modes of operations for Smart Microgrid: •Grid Connected Mode •Island Connected Mode •Emergency Mode 7
  • 8. GRID CONNECTED MODE In this mode grid is directly connected to supply. It determines the appropriate set points for individual generators, storage elements, and loads in the microgrid. Its also supply constant power mode for all DER (Distribute energy resource). 8
  • 9. ISLAND CONNECTED MODE This mode having two DER. It performing operation in MASTER/SLAVE mode. DER 1: Transfer supply to master mode. DER2: Transfer supply to slave mode. 9
  • 10. ISLAND OPRATION IN MASTER MODE When island connected to the master mode its behave like a master controller. It provides the interface between the system controller and individual load generator. 10
  • 11. ISLAND OPRATION IN SLAVE MODE When island connected to the slave mode its behave like a slave controller . There are four type of slave controller:  Local Generators  Storage devices  Loads  Microgrid switch or breaker 11
  • 12. Emergency Mode In this mode the response will depend upon the need of supply system. The response can include: changing generator conditions, reducing load, or actually disconnecting from the supply system. 12

  • 14. IDEAL COMPONENT OF MICROGRID Mainly there are two component of Smart Microgrid: 1: Distributed Energy Resources I. Generation II. Storage 2: Flexible Loads I. Metering II. Control III. Protection IV. Communication 14
  • 15. Distributed Energy Generation Distributed energy generates electricity from many small energy sources, such as fossil fuel, nuclear, large solar power plants and hydropower plants. Distributed generation allow collection of energy from many sources and may give lower environmental impacts and improved security of supply. 15
  • 17. DISTRIBUTED ENERGY STORAGE Grid energy storage send excess electricity over the electricity transmission grid to temporary electricity storage sites that subsequently become energy suppliers when electricity demand is greater. 17
  • 18. FLEXIBLE LOADS The identification and appropriate control of flexible loads can be employed to balance energy and demand. The system to meet the demand not only by changing the generated energy but also by controlling the load when necessary. 18
  • 19. WORKING A microgrid is a localized grouping of electricity generation, energy storage, and loads that normally operates connected to a traditional centralized grid (macrogrid). This single point of common coupling with the macrogrid can be disconnected. The microgrid can then function autonomously. 19
  • 20. APPLICATIONS  Communication standards and protocols.  Large scale energy storage.  Participation in energy markets.  Distributed Generation and Alternative energy sources.  Demand Response and Dynamic Pricing 20
  • 22. MICROGRID FEATURES ADVANTAGES  Locally secure.  Differentiation of electrical service possible.  Allow easier integration of renewable.  Increases reliability DISADVANTAGES  Can be expensive  Work yet to be done in controls, operation and protection. 22
  • 23. Future scope The microgrid structure makes it a viable platform for large entities to reduce energy costs and generate revenue through the sale of energy during periods of peak demand. Additionally, microgrids can efficiently and effectively provide "off-grid" areas with regular access to electricity as well as "keep the lights on" in times of crisis for critical applications like a hospital. 23
