I was surprised to see how beautiful the hospitals are. They look gothic and solid.
The mental institutions look really expensive to build and the size is incredible. Even
though the hospitals housed many patients, they were forgotten because patients

sample of Rotifers, Diatoms, and green Algae, nothing exciting at all. Measureable
things that were observed during this pond water experiment such as total chlorine,
free chlorine, total hardness, and total alkalinity all stayed pretty much the same
with variations at the /+ .2 rate. But the pH for my pond water sample did rise
between 8.1 9.0 which is incredible and I have no idea why.

When interviewing Miss Simpson on November 01, 2017, I learned that fifty years
ago, Lockwood was a predominately African American neighborhood. It was a
neighborhood where neighbors would speak during encounters, participate in
engagements in the community, take walks around the block, entertain each other in
their homes, and watch after the children. Essentially, it was more than a
neighborhood. It was a community. Fast forward to 2017, things are different at first
sight. New houses that scream, Gentrification are being built on almost every block.
At first, they seem to be out of place as they stand in comparison to the older houses.
Houses that have witnessed more things than I could ever imagine. Houses that I
would soon learn to have occupied by multiple generations. Houses that had a story.
While none of the new houses I saw embodied any of the qualities that drew me to
admire the older houses, I felt this sense that they were the first step in this process
of transformation that was taking place in the Lockwood neighborhood. As a looked
up to saw the view of downtown and the sound of busy cars, I thought to myself, I
should have expected this to happen sooner or later.
Parallel to the older houses, the older residents in Lockwood have a story. A story
that illustrates the love for one community, even during rough times. I quickly
learned after conversing with Miss Simpson, her granddaughter, and Mr. Bell that
Lockwood to them is not just a neighborhood that is positioned perfectly next to
downtown Charlotte. It is a neighborhood that has always extended open arms to
outsiders, especially those who were not familiar with the area. I understood this to
be true as I sat on their porches to interview them with great enthusiasm and kindness.
While it might have taken some time to get used to, Lockwood nevertheless was a

unnecessarily harsh towards Nora. I agree that it is irresponsible to just drop
everything and leave but I don t agree with describing Nora as a unloving egoist. If
anything Nora did everything she could for her children out of love. Once she
heard that a nearly all young criminals are the children of mothers who are
constitutional liars . She completely backs away from her children as we see the
maid constantly telling her that her children want to play with their mother and
her answering no, no, no don t let them in . This showing if not anything else that
she doesn t mean to do any harm but is naive to the world around her that she ends
up doing so anyway. This is how I consider her when she is leaving. I see the harm
it will do because I believe that in the perfect world children would be brought up
by two parents or at least one. But I don t believe Nora views it this way, she has

Throughout the years, the LGBT community has put forth tremendous effort to gain
rights and recognition in the United States. Yet there have been numerous laws that
have discriminated and made them feel unequal. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgendered. Many people in the community have a hard time
accepting who they truly are in terms of sexual orientationor gender identity. Coming
out is challenging enough on its own, and laws and regulations that discriminate
against those who only wish to live freely can make it hard for them to do so.
Living in the time period we do, we have seen many changes in the right direction as
far as having equal rights for all, but it has not always been this way. There have been
many movements and actions the LGBTcommunity has taken over the years to get
to where we are today. There have also been many laws and regulations specifically
targeted at same sex and transgendered individuals, some of which that still apply
today. Discrimination towards the LGBT community is not something new. Although
today it may seem normal to see two men holding hands walking down the street,
forty years ago it was almost unheard of. This is why the Supreme Court case Baker
vs. Nelson made headlines. In 1972, the Court ruled that a Minnesota same sex
couple had no constitutional right to marry. This all started when two male
