Information And Communication Technologies ( Ict ) Essay
Introduction
In this era of technology, there is a general agreement that Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) have been contributing to improve qualities of life, as well as economical
growth as a whole. Businesses and economic sectors are relying on technological advancements that
facilitate them to establish an integrated value chain. Using these advancements strategically and
appropriately can also enhance productivity and improved competitiveness. Likewise, governments
and global aid organizations have seen these advancements as essential instruments for national
integration since they are capable of empowering more prominent access to wellbeing and
educational services, and developing economical opportunities to open doors for underprivileged
communities. Despite of all the advancements of Information and Communication Technologies,
the phenomenon known as the Digital Divide has left a significant number of individuals,
communities and even businesses divided into two separate categories. The Digital Divide is
typically described as the division between the individuals and communities with access to
information technologies and those without it. The fact that the uses of computer, Internet and other
technological means have significantly filtered its way into modern economy through employment
and commerce, the inability to gain access or operate the technologies is an effective challenge
created by the Digital Divide for the people without such

Differences Between American Colonies And New England...
The American colonies were a diverse and interesting people. The colonies are typically split
between the New England colonies and the Southern colonies. While both sets of colonies
would eventually make up what is now the original thirteen colonies of the United States, they
both had their similarities and differences. What led to the differences of the two sets of colonies
and how were they similar? This question was relevant then and it is relevant in today s world.
The southern colonies were mainly controlled by an elite class of planters that owned the most
land and had the most slaves. Below them were the small farmers that had a few slaves and
much smaller plots of land and at the bottom were the landless white people. This social ladder
made up the economic and political worlds in the south. The planters were the most powerful
politically and the most wealthy. This is in sharp contrast to the New England colonies that were
more focused on preserving a familial line and focused on their families rather than on the next
crop growth. The south had very fertile land and this led to the planters taking over the social
landscape. In New England the land wasn t as good and the population wasn t made up of mostly
farm and crop owners.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Charleston was the only major city in the south and because of this the people in the south didn t
become lawyers or politicians. The few people who did go into these fields were mostly the
wealthy plantation owners like the Washington family. In New England there were more Cities
and the people had more options than just owning land and growing crops. The viewpoints on
women and their rights were also very different. In the south women who were widowed would be
able to own the land their husbands leave behind while New England women were focused on
having children and raising

I.Problem:
Prosocial behavior refers to voluntary actions that are intended to help or benefit another individual
or group of individuals (Eisenberg and Mussen 1989). This definition refers to consequences of the
people who do the actions rather than the motivations behind those actions. These behaviors include
a broad range of activities: sharing, comforting, rescuing, and helping. Though prosocial behavior
can be confused with altruism, they are, in fact, two distinct concepts. Prosocial behavior refers to a
pattern of activity, whereas, altruism is the motivation to help others out of pure regard for their
needs rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even little boys are more prone to help the subject mentioned above than little girls. With findings
of 80% of the samples taken favor and supported this theory. VIII.Theory:
Soldiers are trained to be altruist even when they don t agree with it they are taught a sense of self
service and duty and no matter how they feel about someone or what the person looks like they are
going to help. Males and females soldiers the same. IX.Hypothesis:
Between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 on Monday and Tuesday afternoon adults and children
walking from the Fort Hood Commissary s parking lot to the store and back, tend to be more
helpful of a woman that is dressed up and seems attractive with some items that she dropped than
they do to a dirty not so attractive woman on the same situation on the following day. X.Procedure
or Methodology:
The investigator dressed up and made herself look appealing and acted very friendly. She smiled
at the subjects as they approached her, she purposely dropped some items to see who would help
her. An assistant was trained to stand at corner to observe from a different point of view.
On the following day at the same days and times the investigator made herself look dirty and not
as attractive as she looked the previous day. She still just as friendly and kept the same smile as
she dropped some items in front of the same facility on the installation. This time she had a one
year old child with her. The infant was friendly as

Railroad Safety
After reading the information, and watching the videos on keeping us safe, and protecting us
from accidents, I realized that railroad crossing is a serious thing, and we need to be careful
when we are crossing the tracks. I have realized that it comes down to being smart, careful, and
using common sense. When red lights are blinking, you should stop, and be extremely cautious.
LIke it said in one of the videos, it is not worth it to risk anything. If we are all just a little smarter
when we are around railroad crossings, and we use our heads we should all be fine. I think
another key to being safe is keeping the distractions in our pockets. If we are on our phone we are
much less likely to pay attention to our surroundings, and what is going... Show more content on

Something that I didn t realize was that when you walk on tracks for train you are actually
trespassing. Not only are you incredibly unsafe, you are actually breaking a law, and there could
be serious consequences for doing that. Not only are the tracks dangerous, but not being smart
on platform, and around the cars. Around the train cars is not a place to mess around. It is
dangerous, and you should follow all of the rules that are posted. They aren t posted to make our
lives harder, they are posted to help us out, keep us safe, and make sure that no one gets hurt. I
think that if we all just follow the rules that are posted, we use common sense, put our phones
away, and are cautious, we can help each other out, and be safe in these situations. That is what I
got out of the sources that I read, and listen to. In the video, it s your choice, there are many
different stories about tragedies and other sad stories. I didn t realize how serious these
injuries, and accidents can be. I thought it was very interesting that when a train hits a car, it s like
a car running over a soda can. I also thought it was very sad all the stories that the people told

A Comparison Between Neanderthal And Modern Human Dna
Introduction
Homo heidelbergensis was an early human species that lived around 700,000 to 200,000 years
ago. These pioneers were the first to live in colder climates, hunt large animals with wooden spears,
and utilize fire. They were also our first ancestors to construct simple shelters out of wood and rock.
Interestingly a comparison between Neanderthal and modern human DNA suggests the two lineages
diverged from a common ancestor, most likely Homo heidelbergensis!
Discovery
On October 21, 1907, Daniel Hartmann spotted a jaw while working in a sandpit in Mauer, near
Heidelberg, Germany (49.3389В° N, 8.7986В° E.) The jaw had human like teeth but was very

H. 2000), which were found together with stone tools and the remains of more than 10 butchered
horses. This evidence shows they flourished in a rich and diverse cooling epoch called the
Pleistocene, which was a cooling period with intermittent glaciers covering North America and
Europe (Eldredge 2000) and deserts spread over northern Africa separating the populations of plants
and animals, including humans (Zuk 2013). These cooling and recurrent glaciations led to the
physical adaptation of shorter and wider bodies in an attempt to conserve heat in this cooler climate.
Dating
Many fossils of this species have been dated with various methods. One such was by sequencing
mitochondrial DNA from a femur bone found at the Sima de los Huesos ( pit of bones ) in northern
Spain by Svante Paabo, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. After
sequencing, researchers compared the result with genetic information from Neanderthals and
Denisovans and dated them to over 300,000 years (Meyer 2013).
Description
The first preserved bones for this species was a lower jaw with teeth, found near Heidelberg,
Germany. Other fossils include 5,500 bone fragments from 28 individuals found in The Pit of
Bones , Spain, and possibly a fossilized skullcap discovered in northern India s Narmada Valley that
currently represents the easternmost occurrence (Meyer 2013).

Free Will Debate
The Debate over Free will
Free will is the capacity to select between different possible ways of action. We are given free will
to make our own choice. This free will is a gift, so we can decide the way to live. Still, we should
keep in mind that the free will is a responsibility and a gift. The choices people make are a part of
the free will and both are compatible. Thus, the idea of free has been argued by numerous
philosophers. Therefore, my explanation will base on free will and the consequences of the choice.
When you are given the ability to decide on your own, it is free will. For instance, a person was
given a personal choice to make and he said to his friend; Do not make me think; tell me what to
do. This person did not want to utilize free will and decide on his own, he wanted to be told.
Likewise, people have a diverse view about free will. Despite their different perspective, free will is
a gift. It comes to the point each person ends up to have different variety of free will. In addition
to this gift of free will, you are not preprogrammed to please anyone as a robot. Therefore, we can
have visualized it this way; having a gift that is mechanically or one ... Show more content on

We can determine which choice to make in a situation base on ethical standards and moral
values. Even though, we may not control our upbringing in this world, the ability to access over
twenty percent of our brain is available. My point, though, is that as a child, you have less free
will but as an adult it is freely to exercise it. As we aspire to have all the supernatural or super
abilities; it s impossible to achieve it. Thus, some people will use a meditative process for getting
supernatural powers. To acquire this kind of power, you need to mediate in an organized way.
However, it is strictly prohibited to do mediation to only achieve

A Study On Postpartum Sex Taboo Essay
In an attempt to explain why certain societies have a postpartum sex taboo, anthropologist John
Whiting discovered the statistical association that, Societies with apparently low protein diets tend
to have long postpartum sex taboos (Ember 54). Based off of this association, Whiting went on to
theorize that a long postpartum sex taboomay be an adaptation to tropical environments,
particularly where the major food staples are low in protein (Ember 54). He argued that children
in these areas were prone to the protein deficiency disease called kawashiorkor (Ember 54), so if
mothers abstained from sex for a year, therefore eliminating the possibility of having another
child, the first child would be able to nurse longer and possibly have a lower risk for contracting
the disease. In order to test his theory, Whiting sampled 172 societies (Ember 62) and divided
them into a table based off of the duration the postpartum sex taboo, with a long taboo being
anything over a year and short being anything under. Additionally, he also divided the societies into
high, medium, and low protein societies, with low surviving on root and tree crops (Ember 61),
medium on cereal crops (Ember 61), and high on hunting, fishing, or herding (Ember 61).
Personally, when reading about the theory and analyzing the evidence supporting it, I am accepting
of the theory s proposition, but do not support it entirely, simply because I feel that there should be
a bit more convincing evidence.

The Land Acts are one of the many laws established by the white supremacy government to
separate the different races in South Africa. Under apartheid, native South Africans (black) would
be forced to live in isolated areas from whites and use separate facilities, and contact between both
races would be permitted unless of certain circumstance (jobs). Despite the consistent opposition to
apartheid within of South Africa and around the world, South African laws remained in action for

T. Sherman effectively exercised a form of mission command by gaining shared understanding of
the problem, clearly communicating his intent, and establishing mutual trust with his subordinate

The Partition Of India By Bapsi Sidhwa
Before the Partition of India, in 1947, India was considered a country with a reasonably peaceful
history. However, during and after the Partition, sexual violence, both towards men and women,
escalated, resulting in the rape and abduction of over 80,000 women. Cracking India, by Bapsi
Sidhwa, tells a story that highlights these violent acts by both Muslims and Hindus, through the
eyes of a disabled young Parsi girl named Lenny, who witnesses first hand the violenceof Partition
when she mistakenly participates in the abduction of her ayah, Shanta. Throughout Cracking India,
Lenny observes as the religions involved in Partition become increasingly violent towards both men
and women, within their own religions and against others. Lenny, who begins the novel as a very
naГЇve young Parsi girl, comes to understand that the foundations of violence in her surroundings
are largely gendered and that the experience of this violence is differentiated along gender lines
(Rastegar 27). Lenny witnesses the evolution of Ayah s suitors, (who are Parsi, Hinduand Muslim),
from men interested in being with Ayah to men who are desperate to control Ayah. As Partition
gets more violent, Ice Candy Man, one of Ayah s suitors who is Muslim, takes on the role of a
minor nationalist leader in their area and eventually coordinates a mob of Muslims to come to the
Sethi house an abduct Lenny, who is Hindu (Rastegar 27). When Lenny witnesses the change in

Benefits Of Embedded Phonics
The National Reading Panel has declared that explicit and systematic phonics instruction is the most
effective way to teach reading. Phonics instruction, along with a reading program that provides
exposure to vocabulary and interesting literature, can build lifelong readers.
The National Reading Panel supports five methods of phonics instruction.
a)Synthetic phonics: Students learn the individual phonemes and then strategies to blend those
sounds into words.
b)Embedded Phonics: The National Reading Panel defines embedded phonics as that which takes
an implicit approach and teaches rules and sounds through exposure to reading. Using a quality

The Woman Warrior and The Interesting Narrative Essay
The Woman Warrior and The Interesting Narrative
In both The Woman Warrior and The Interesting Narrative, the authors inspect the issue of one s
cultural identity by way of the telling of their own story, and how it has affected them. By telling
their stories as persons who have emerged themselves into a new culture, but at the same retained
vestiges of the old, Olaudah Equiano and Maxine Kingston are exemplifying a duality in cultural
identity, that is often times lost.
Before continuing, though, it is important to clarify the definition of cultural identity, at least for
this paper. One s cultural identity is the way one sees oneself in terms of the cultures and societies
that they have come from. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This personal connection to the native culture is an important part to any cultural identity, because it
provides a means of introspection, an ability to determine one s perception of oneself. The ability
to perceive oneself is important because it permits one to look at and choose to discard or retain
parts of one s various cultures into one s personal cultural identity.
However, in other aspects, Equiano is able to better explore portions of his cultural identity, because
he has made a direct personal connection to the culture. In this case, it is the slave culture that he
was forced into. Because of the intense experiences he has within this culture, it plays a large role in
his cultural identity. These experiences include his numerous journeys on his masters ships, which
combined with his religious explorations at the time led him to desire to become an Englishman. At
the same time, they allowed him to create a broader identity, because he saw the connections
between himself and other cultures (such as Turkish and Jewish cultures of the time.)
The second crucial factor in determining the cultural identity, and is shown in The Interesting
Narrative, is the time that one is exposed to a culture. It is not difficult to determine that in Equiano
it appears his native culture had little direct impact on him. In the narrative, he makes little to no
mention of his home, his native country, or anything related to them. This

By being approachable and a good listener it gives the child confidence to speak to the individual

Conversely, if the Teaching Assistant is in a bad mood, possibly conveyed by poor body

have a negative impact on the child. If a child is talking and the Teaching Assistants body language
shows they are not fully listening, such as if they are looking away or talking over them, this passes
on the message that they are not interested in what the child has to say and the child may not bother
taking the time to speak to the Teaching Assistant again in the future.

Southern Vowel Shift In Southern English
Introduction
Southern American English is one of the most widely recognized dialects of American English;
however, it is also the most negatively viewed dialect of American English followed closely only
by New York City speech. With this negative view comes the perception that those that speak this
dialect of Standard American English are ignorant. This could not be farther from the truth.
According to many linguists, the Southern American English dialect is rooted in British regional
dialect and is the only dialect that still sounds much like our ancestors. (PBS) Some unique features
of Southern American English are well known such as saying y all for you all; useta for used to;
and fixin to for I intend to, along with the well known southern drawl that comes from the Southern
Vowel Shift. Although the Southern English dialect touches most of the southern states within the
United States, Louisiana does not consist of the same features due to the French influence on
language.
Phonology Southern American English possesses many phonological features that make it unique
from Standard American English (*SAE), but the Southern Vowel Shift may be the most
recognized feature of the Southern English dialect. The Southern Vowel Shift affected most of the
southern states, but each stage of this shift may have impacted different regions of the south. For
instance, the merger of vowels in words like pen and pin began occurring as early as the second
quarter of the nineteenth

The Stereotypes Of Eduardo Medina

The Influence Of The Monster In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
What indeed makes one a monster? Is it our physical appearance, our direct or indirect actions,
our secrets? In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley portrays Victor s creation as a monster but
throughout the novel we begin to realize the real monster is Victor, due to his self centered
personality, his abnormal view on life, and the abandonment of his creation to show us society s
perspective on what a monster is, is inaccurate because the social norm can be just as monstrous.
Victor s selfishness is one of the several characteristics that makes him a monster in this novel.
Many casualties in the book were due to Victor even if he was not the actual killer. When the
creature murdered William, Victor still kept his creation a secret. Justine was blamed for the
murder and even when she falsely confessed to being guilty he still did not speak a word about
his invention. The reason that was holding him back from revealing what he had made was he
did not want to look like a fool. This is shown when he says A thousand times rather would I
have confessed myself guilty of the of the crime ascribed to Justine, but I was absent when it was
committed, and such a declaration would have been as the ravings of a madman... (Shelley 83).
Another example of Victor s narcissistic personality is how he used Elizabeth and their wedding
just to lure in the creature. Victor s plan was to give the creature what he wanted which was a
wedding, and when he was close enough, he would shoot him. We

What Is Riparian Water Rights

the second is prior appropriation water rights. Riparian water rights has two methods of use.
One method is the person who owns the land by the water source owns the water, but cannot

can use the water if it is reasonable for the purpose of his needs. This is based on case by case

it first. The person with seniority has right to use as much water as wanted. The best policy is the

reason for this could be due to a nature or land build up from how long ago this could date back to.
How this could be tested that the hidden monument came before possibly Stonehenge is that
with further technology one day we could be able to do carbon dating without excavating the site
that could mess up so much. I believe that is we can make a drill that is long , but small enough
to get the where the stones are and be able to test it that way will one day be possible for now I
recommend that leave the buried stones alone until we have the best tech to deal with the

Positive And Negative Effects Of Gambling
Human psychology is one variable of many that can lead a human to addiction. For pathological
gamblers, this is no different. About 2.2% of the US population is considered to have a gambling
problem. As more and more states legalize online gambling, it s important to understand both the
positive and potential negative effects of it. Cognitive biases, which affect gamblers and non
gamblers alike, can explain the irrationalities of pathological gamblers, and how the casinos
generally make out in the end. Gamblingcould be defined as, to stake or risk money, or anything of
value, on the outcome of something involving chance. (dictionary.com) Gambling has long been a
part of society, dating back to 2300 B.C when the Chinese invented a gambling game called tiles.
When done in moderation, gambling could be seen as fun and entertaining to one. However, some
people can t just have fun, they spend their entire net worth and ruin their lives because of it. The
average person may not understand how gambling addiction comes about. After all, many people in
society gamble in one form or another whether it s pools with friends, home pokergames, or an
annual trip to the local casino. In addition, it can be done once for most people, without getting
addicted, similarly to drug addictions. Behavioral, cognitive, and neurobiological profiles of
individuals with pathological gambling disorder resemble those of individuals with substance use
disorders, especially stimulate

Anorexia And Bulimia Nervosa
Introduction
In today s society, media is everywhere around us, and it can have a greater impact on us than
we believe and/or like to admit. According to James G Webster, media can be defined as a way
of communicating with the general public; newspapers, magazines, television, and billboards.
Being exposed to mass media s glorification of slim and modified bodies can over time lead to a
negative body image, and that possibly leading to extreme dieting and mental health problems, such
as an eating disorder.
Body image involves one s perception, imagination, emotions, and physical sensations of and about
our bodies (Lightstone, 2012). Lightstone also argued that body image is not based on facts, but in
our nature and influenced more by self esteem than by actual attractiveness judged by others.
According to Lightstone, body image can change depending on mood, environment, and mental
health. A dissatisfied body image can lead to dieting, and sometimes even eating disorders. The
eating disorders that this essay will focus on are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. ... Show

Marriage By David Popenoe And Barbara Dafoe Whitehead...
Marriage: a fairy tale where every moment leads to happiness and everlasting love. In the article
What s Happening to Marriage? the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse
the fairy tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is
weakening and divorceis on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more
struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The
authors arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David
Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today s society marriageis becoming more of a
trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: ...an
economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended familyand larger
community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith (520).
Marriage is becoming more of a couples relationship and losing meaning in society s culture;
therefore, the rate of divorce is increasing causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and
Whitehead use numerous statistics about divorce rate; however, they only examine the women s
point of view. According to the authors, this is not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps
and recovered causing the authors to delay on writing marriage s obituary. The authors of the
article value a considerable amount of appeals that are

Prometheus, A Trickster In Greek Mythology
Jayna Grove Mrs. Wall PAP English I 13 October 2014 The Dexterous Tricksters Have you ever
wondered about how Greek Mythology comes back to us today and how you can find examples
in other cultures? Greek Mythology is full of many great tricksters, however, the trickster that
stands out to me the most is Prometheus. Prometheus was a great trickster for several good
reasons. He was the reason the mortals got the good parts of the animal, and gave them their fire
back. When looking for a trickster from a different culture, Satan tops the list because he was a
devious trickster, when he tempted Eve with the apple. In my modern day example I chose Jerry

He started out by tricking Eve when he told her You will be like God , wanting Eve to think God
was being selfish. When God said You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must
not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you must
surely die , he was warning Adam and Eve (Life Application Study Bible New International
Version, Genesis 2:16 17). Then when Satan said to Eve, For God knows that when you eat of it
your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil , he was trying to
convince her to eat from the tree (Life Application Study Bible New International Version,
Genesis 3:5). Satan had tempted Eve when he said, You will be like God ; which becoming like
God wasn t a bad thing to Eve. Then when Satan told Eve You will not surely die he was
implying to her that God was being selfish for not wanting her to have God s knowledge of good
and evil, and that it would be okay to disobey God to get what she wants in life (Life Application
Study Bible New International Version, Genesis 3:4). Therefore all these statements come to the
conclusion that Satan is very deceiving and cunning. Satan has proven time and time again
throughout the Bible, that he was a trickster with many different sly schemes and

Nefertiti Book Report
Nefertiti by Michelle Moran is an entertaining book about the famous Royal Wife of Akhenaten.
The novel is told from the point of view of Nefertiti s little sister, Mutnodjmet. It begins
immediately before Nefertiti is chosen to become Akhenaten s Chief Wife. The book follows
Nefertiti and her family throughout their life as the royal family in Memphis and then transitioning
into the move to Amarna. The story stops only after the death of Nefertitiand Meritaten and the
crowning of Tutankhamun as Pharaohof Egypt. Moran captures a Nefertiti that is ambitious,
powerful, and sometimes scared. Nefertiti is thrown into the royal family as a teenager and was
told to try and control the heretic Pharaoh, Akhenaten. At many times, the reader gets a glimpse of
that worried and terrified young girl, but throughout most of the novel, Nefertiti is portrayed to be
a strong and controlling Chief Wife of the Pharaoh. The author shows the fights between Nefertiti
and her family as she goes against what they want by supporting Akhenaten and his religious views.

How Did The German Disadvantage During Covert Intelligence...
Section 1: Identification and evaluation of sources The investigation will answer the question,
how did the German disadvantage in covert intelligence due to the Double Cross System impact
the Western front of World War II. It will focus on the time period of World War II (1939 1945)
in Germany and Britain and the effect of British counter intelligence on the course of the war,
specifically: D day, the V1 and V2 London bombings, tactical plans, and technological
developments. The investigation will involve the examination of military documents from the
time period and books using such evidence, including The Double Cross System in the War of
1939 to 1945 by John C Masterman and A Short History of the Second World War by Basil
Collier, relevant for analysis of the Double Cross System and its effect. The source, The Double
Cross System in the War of 1939 to 1945, was written as an internal government report following
the war in 1945 and published widely with censorship in 1978. It provides a perspective regarding
counter espionage in the immediate post war years but the censorship is a limitation, not providing
a full account. It originates from John C Masterman, chairman of the Twenty Committee, which
helped run the Double Cross System. This introduces a limitation as Masterman was influenced to
report more strongly on the organization s successes. However, this is also a value as it was

Leadership in Crisis
Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance
3/10/2014 aFriendInNeed Situation Overview:
Shackleton sailed with 27 men from South Georgia Island on a British Polar expedition into South
Atlantic aboard the ship called Endurance. The south pole had been recently reached in 1911. The
goal of the Imperial Trans Antarctic Expeditionwas to become the first explorers to land on the
Antarctic continent as well as cross it. The original plan was to sail Endurance through the
Weddell Sea and then use dogs and sledges to support the crew of six men to march on the
opposite side of Antarctica.
However, their ship became trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, before they could reach the
Antarctic coast. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, his spirited optimism, unrelenting courage and sheer determination displayed during
the crisis have become legendary.
By what criteria should the Endurance expedition be evaluated? As a scientific endeavor? An
entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial opportunity? Given your answer, was it a success
or failure?
The Endurance expedition can be evaluated as an entrepreneurial venture. Shackleton was trying to
establish a name for himself as an explorer. His main goal was to be the first to reach the South Pole
and traverse the continent. Britain held records for the farthest exploration to the north and south
polar areas, but faced international competition as time went by. An international race was going on
to reach and cross the South Pole and England wanted to be the first to claim Antarctica.
Shackleton acted as an entrepreneur as he spent a lot of time raising the necessary funding for his
expedition. This journey had high associated risks, and he needed to secure tremendous funding
for, two vessels, as well as for two crews. Not only, he used his family connections to reach out for
Britain s wealthiest people, but also sent them a personal letter along with a copy of the expedition
prospectus. He managed to secure the needed ВЈ51,000 for the expedition. Eventually, he took a
huge financial risk to achieve his dream.

marginal costs of $10,000 per car. If Saab produces 50,000 cars per year and Volvo produces
200,000, calculate the average fixed cost and average total cost for each company. On the basis of
these costs, which company s market share should grow in relative terms? Answer: Average total
cost is average fixed cost plus marginal cost: ATC = FC/Q + MC. Volvo s average fixed cost $1
billion/200,000 = 5,000 is much less than Saab s average fixed cost $1 billion/50,000 = 20,000 due
to producing more cars. Volvo s average production cost $15,000 is lower than Saab s of $30,000

b. What is Beth s profit maximizing price and quantity? Answer: MR = MC at a price of $0.60 and
quantity of 5 cups. c. At that price, what are Beth s economic profit and total consumer surplus?
Answer: Profit = (P MC) Q = (0.60 0.20) 5 = $2. Consumer surplus is reservation price minus actual
price for each cup sold: ($1.00 $0.60) + ($0.90 $0.60) + ($0.80 $0.60) + ($0.70 $0.60) = $1. d. What
price should Beth charge if she wants to maximize total economic surplus? What quantity would she

The blank slate is a theory utilized by some linguistic analysts that believe people are born with no
innateness or hardwiring from genetics, but rather develop their character through the influence of
their surrounding culture. Pinker strongly claims in his Ted Talk entitled, Human Nature and the
Blank Slate, that children are born with predisposed traits, although everyone shares similar
behaviors and feelings, such as aesthetics, affection, and age statuses, and even refers to this as
common sense. Pinker also uses genetic science and neurobiology to disclaim utilizations of the
blank slate as an explanation for language development. A study done by neurobiologist Paul
Thompson measured grey matter in areas of the brain between different pairs of people. Those
who were unrelated showed no similarities while fraternal twins shared many, and identical twins,
who share much of their DNA, showed a large amount of resemblances, proving that genetics are
more influential than culture in shaping character. He ultimately claims that scientific studies
show that biological siblings separated at birth are more identical in personality than adopted
siblings sharing the same household because he says that everything that happens to you in a
given home over all of those years, appears to leave no permanent stamp on your personality of
intellect. He controversially argues that many people, like Skinner, adopt the blank slate theory
because if people are blank slates, then it can be assumed that everyone is equal, however denying
this assertion justifies prejudice and discrimination if one s slate is not clean because they may
have more of it than others, whatever the trait may be. The blank slate theory also leads people to

The Importance Of Relation To The Common Law Duty Of Care
Introduction:
Job references are crucial as they can be a deciding factor in whether or not a person will get a
job. Therefore, they should reflect a person accurately, and if they do not, it is important to
question if the employer is liable for writing a bad reference. This will be discussed in relation to
the common law duty of care, as well as being linked to the liability of Universities in respect of
students.
Discussion:
Firstly, it is important to establish whether the employer owes a duty of care or not. The case of
Caparo v Dickman resulted in a three stage test about duty of care and to address responsibility
in determining where the liability of the financial loss lies. The test ruled The harm caused by
the negligent actions must be reasonably foreseeable; the relationship between the parties to the
dispute must be one of reasonable proximity; and it must be fair, reasonable, and just to impose
liability. This test provides a qualification for establishing duty of care. Linked to this, in the
Spring v Guardian Assurance case it was decided that there was a duty of care owed to the
employee. If they duty is violated, then the liability of the economic losses suffered by the
employee are given to the employer. Lord Woolf believed that it was necessary for the employer
to be liable in damages as the law of defamation does not provide adequate remedy for damages
caused as it requires malice not just negligence.
Another way to indicate duty of care is using the

Analysis Of The Interlopers And The Machine That Won The War
What do you prefer to read about? Maybe you like reading fiction or nonfiction, about heroes and

Interlopers and The Machine That Won the War
are both short stories full of interesting plot points
that keep the readers hooked right until the last word. The Interlopers is about two men hunting
each other in the night, until a twist happens. The Machine That Won the War
is about three men
revealing secrets about how the war was truly won. However, The Interlopers offers a more realistic
plot and relatable characters than The Machine that Won the War. In The Interlopers, the short story
starts out by taking us to a forest of mixed growth somewhere on the eastern spurs of the
Carpathians (Saki, The Interlopers). The winter night is cold and stormy, with the wind blowing
wildly and the animals uneasy, there was movement and unrest among the creatures that were wont
to sleep through the dark hours (Saki, The Interlopers). The forests are very steep, and the game it
kept for hunting was not that great, however the two characters and their family have quarreled
over it for years. The narrow strip of precipitous woodland that lay on its outskirt was not
remarkable for the game it harbored or the shooting it afforded. (Saki, The Interlopers). Hunting in
these woods is the character

Theme Of Green Light In The Great Gatsby
The American dream is an ideology in which success can be achieved by any individual through
hardwork and dedication, however in F. Scott Fitzgerald s allusive novel, The Great Gatsby, the
American dream proves to be unattainable. In the novel, the green light represents Gatsby s fiery
desire to own Daisy and the valley of ashes represents the turmoil faced by the working class in
order to achieve the American dream. Fitzgerald effectively uses the glowing green light at the
end of the Buchanan s dock and the desolate wasteland that is the valley of ashes as symbols, in
order to shape and reinforce the theme of the impossible pursuit of the American dream.
Throughout the novel, there are numerous mentions of the glowing green light and its
symbolic representation of hope. Located at the end of the Buchanan s dock, Gatsby associates
this light with Daisy and his dream of having her all to himself. At night, Gatsby stands on his
blue lawn and looks out towards the green light, reaching up as if he is trying to grasp it but of
course, the distance is preventing him to do so. He puts Daisy on the highest of pedestals and
sees her as this ray of light, this trophy girl that is his to win if only he could close the distance
between them. This is evident when Nick first sees Gatsby and states He stretched out his arms
towards the dark water in a curious way [...] Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished
nothing except a single green light, minute and far away

Similarities Between Pope Boniface VIII And King Phillip...
Pope Boniface VIII and King Phillip IV of France were leaders of a large conflict during the
middle ages. The issues between church and state were very prominent. Both authoritative figures
believed that the other was asserting too much power. Boniface passed his final papal bull, Unam
Sanctam, in 1302 which would led to the end of the dispute. Boniface and Philip were interlocked
in a battle over power during the middle ages. Boniface believed that the church should have more
power than the state; therefore he sent decrees to Philip in order to maintain dominance. The bulls
Boniface created gave him power over not only King Philip, but over all secular rulers. Philip
attempted to keep the church below the state, but Boniface continued to send these bulls effectively
limiting Philip s power.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boniface was abusing his power by writing these bulls. Or that s what s appeared to be
happening according to the King and other secular rulers. Philip had Boniface arrested by
mercenaries and William de Nogaret, Philips royal minister, for heresy in 1303. Boniface would
later die in 1303 due to a high fever. The issues between Pope Boniface and King Philip IV relate
to the case of Thomas Backet and Henry II because both disputes were conflicts between church
and state. Henry II thought that by electing Beckett as his Archbishop he would be able to rule
over the church and the state. However, Becket did not give Henry that power and he would
eventually be assassinated. In conclusion the feuds between church and state have a long history.
Many powerful figures have fought over the power to control church and state resulting in lives
being lost. Although, it is said that Boniface was mot trying to gain power, but to protect the
church. Despite this claim figures were so hungry for power that they would do anything to again

An irrefutable quality of a strong leader is an unyielding desire to gain knowledge. Former
President John F. Kennedy himself stated that leadership and learning are indispensable to each

for an in state public college is twenty four thousand and sixty one dollars a year, at times this
does not include room and board or the books and materials required to go to class and learn

income of fifty thousand and fifty four dollars, going to college costs half the income of a

These are good guidelines to start with but there would also need to be guidelines for income

who would not be able to continue with college on their own because of the high price of tuition.
If every student in America was able to go to college for free then the country would be in
poverty because there are a certain percentage of families who can afford to send their children to
school. Also, it would not be paid for if the student is going to a private college and only if they

This paper examines the various symptoms of Separation Anxiety Disorder among children and
adolescents, the refusal of children diagnosed with Separation Anxiety Disorder to go to school,
and the treatments that are used to treat this disorder. Studies have shown that Separation Anxiety
Disorder is the third most common anxiety disorder among children. Symptoms are fairly easy to
recognize, but must be addressed quickly. Refusal to go to school is one of the most significant

SAD is one of the most commonly diagnosed anxiety disorders among children. It is completely
normal for adolescents, especially in very young adolescents, to experience some degree of
separation anxiety. In comparison, separation anxiety disorder is excessive worry or anxiety that
goes beyond the expected amount for the child s developmental level. SAD is characterized by
excessive anxiety concerning separation from home or from those to whom a child is attached.
While some tend to believe that this anxiety disorder is more common among females than males,
it has been determined that SAD occurs at approximately the same rate in males and females
(Eisen Schaefer, 2005). Separation Anxiety Disorder is not permanent. It can be cured; however
children with SAD are at higher risk for the development of other anxiety disorders and depression
not only in adolescence, but in adulthood as well. Studies have shown that children who are
diagnosed with SAD are much more likely to have are much more likely to develop panic disorder,
bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and several others later in life. Studies have
also shown that children diagnosed with SAD have similar symptoms that occur among them.
Primary symptoms include excessive worry about potential harm to self or major attachment
figures, frequent nightmares about separation, physical ailments such as nausea, headaches,
stomach pains, as well as

Rio Sonora Valley Incident Analysis
In August 2014, while I was on holidays in a remote region of Mexico called The Rio Sonora
Valley, I witnessed the most outrageous natural disaster I have ever seen. It was caused by the
spilling of more than 40,000m3 of copper sulphate in the river, which savagely polluted it and
affected thousands of people, cattle and fish among others. This particular incident triggered my
research about water pollution, with a special focus on copper, and led me to the discovery of
chitosan as a possible cleanser of river waters.
Copper commonly occurs as a pollutant in surface fresh waters and it can be extremely toxic to
fish , and so its removal is often necessary . There are several methods that exist in the actuality,
such as adsorption on activated

Why Do Motorcycle Saddlebags
There are few motorcycle accessories that are more important than your motorcycle saddlebags,
and it s important that you give them proper care to make them last. Remember, your saddlebags
will be holding some of your most important stuff, and since they are usually out of sight, out of
mind, it is easy to forget about them when it comes time to care for your bike.
Remember the days before you had motorcycle saddlebags? I sure do. I used to wear a backpack
which, when loaded, would offset the balance and sometimes make for a scary ride. If I ever
rode through wet weather, my gear in the backpack would almost always get soaked. Trust me
when I tell you that it s almost impossible to dry out a down sleeping bag by campfire on a cool
spring evening! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any more often than this and you are wasting your time, and the cleaning product. If you ride in the
sun, or your bike spends time parked out in the sun, a cleaner/conditioner with UV (ultraviolet)
protection is a must. The sun will wreak havoc on your leather saddlebags, drying them out and will
turn them into brittle and useless scraps of leather.
When using the cleaning/conditioning product for the first time, wipe it on a small area on the
underside, and look for any staining or discoloration before cleaning the whole bag. Some leather
experts say to stay away from products containing petroleum products. My rule of thumb is to use
something that others have had great success with regardless of the ingredients.
I try to look for leather products that penetrate deeply and offer good moisture protection. One
great old standby is saddle soap. Saddle soap is as old as leather (it seems), is cheap and is very
gentle on the leather. Some say it s old fashioned, and compared to modern conditioning products,
doesn t offer enough protection from the elements.
Sometimes these cleaning/conditioning products will have strong chemicals that will give off nasty
fumes.Try to use them outdoors so you don t inhale these

Slavery In Modern Society
Does slavery still exist in modern society? When a person is involuntarily subjected to another
person as property instead of a human, it is slavery. Although people have a consensus in a
civilized society that there is barely any slavery in the modern world, in fact, slavery has never left
human society, and the manifestations of slaveryvary as time passes by. The essence of the slavery
system is uneven power distribution, and the struggle of slavery is woven into the conflict of
power. In my opinion, slavery has and always will be a problem in America, because of historical
racism, institutionalized racism, and the power dynamics of slavery hidden within it.
Firstly, the historical racism influences the concept of slavery to a large extent. This racism is hard
to eliminate because it is deeply rooted in the American culture and history. Since 1619 (American
Anti Slavery and Civil Rights Timeline), African slaves existed in America. The invention of
cotton, sugar, and tobacco aggravated their suffering from inhuman exploitation. In The Narrative
of Frederick Douglass, former slave Douglass described slaveholders violent acts towards the
slaves including the all too common whippings and their miserable living conditions. The slaves
lived worse than animals and their identities were stripped down. (Douglass 10) After the outbreak
of the Civil War and the publishing of Emancipation Proclamation, it seemed that America has
stepped out of the slavery structure. However,

1.1 Outline Current Legislation, Guidelines, Policies and...
1.1 outline current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures within own UK home nation
affecting the safeguarding of children and young people. There are many policies and procedures
within the UK that outline the current legislation and guidelines to help with safeguarding children
and young people. The Children Act 1989 The integral part of this act is to maintain the child is at
the forefront of decisions; the best option in relation to the child s welfare will be taken into
account when deciding the best course of action for the child/young person s upbringing creating a
partnership between parents and multi agencies. Alongside this, the requirement of parental
responsibilities is outlined e.g. their rights, duties and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If any one of these targets were not being met, today, some agencies could potentially review a
child s safety under this current legislation. A second part of this new legislation was the
encouragement of multi agencies to work together this idea came as a direct consequence of the
failings in relation to Victoria Climbie. With this, a database accessible by all authorities
involved with children and young people was set up so that records can be maintained
effectively and information can be shared easily. Finally, based on the initiative of agencies
working together to support children and young people, Local Safeguarding Children Boards
(LSCB s) were created within LEA s. In my setting, each planning sheet that teachers use has the
five points from ECM written on it, as a constant reminder to include each child in the lesson and
differentiate accordingly in order to reach all abilities. The five points of ECM are also on
display boards/walls in most classrooms. In class, we were put into groups and had to present an
act to the rest of the class and state how it works in school today. Me and Anne presented the
childrens act 1989 which is shown on the next page. Following that is the other groups presentation
handouts on the different acts. Taking information of how best to safeguard children

Social Work Values
Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what
exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work
based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to
the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social workhas been
utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, local
parishes to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and
administration of donations to the poor. (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the
following is a more concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be
acquired to support the practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as,
promoting social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. (NASW, 2008,
Preamble) Simply put, social workers are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world
in which everyone in society is treated equally, with fairness and are provided the same
opportunities. In addition to this definition, some value assumptions have to be clearly made in
order to support the profession of social work. The values that best compliment the above
definition are most suitably described in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) code

Berkshire Hathaway Analysis Essay
Warren Buffett is a legendary investor who now sits at the CEO position as well as Chairman
and President of the multibillion dollar corporation known as Berkshire Hathaway. For
convenience I will refer to Berkshire Hathaway as BH. BH is a conglomerate holding company
which means that they specialize in investing across several different industries. Yahoo! Finance
defines BH to be in the financial sector and their primary industry as Property and Casualty
Insurance. Some of the other companies that BH owns and manages are GEICO Insurance,
Helzberg Diamonds, Benjamin Moore Co., and Dairy Queen. BH also owns large portions of stock
in Heinz and Mars Incorporated. Due to the present day s stock marketvolatility there would be...

When customers pay a premium on their insurance, BH then takes that premium paid and uses it
to buy stakes in other companies. Which is how Berkshire Hathaway has been able to buy
stakes in so many companies and essentially as well as metaphorically spin their straw into gold.
For the more technical stock picker, it is a good thing to know that BH has had a steady
appreciation over the years with the exception of 2008; being the largest decline known for BH.
The good news is that unlike a lot of companies that suffered from the 2008 crisis BH came out
of it head strong and has surpassed the previous price at which the decline began. These stocks
are the type that long term investors like. This is because they can survive crises such as the one
six years ago. Moreover the long term investor is good for a company because usually these
investors are the ones attending board meetings and placing votes that best further the company s
success. In contrast there is the short term investor who, most of the time, only cares about a
profit and lacks the interest in the long term life of the company. This is not the case for BH,
however. If an investor wants secure long term gains than BH is certainly the best choice. If
someone begs to differ just take a look at some of the key statistics. Looking at the statistics of a
company is what nearly every professional investor does. You

  • 2. Information And Communication Technologies ( Ict ) Essay Introduction In this era of technology, there is a general agreement that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been contributing to improve qualities of life, as well as economical growth as a whole. Businesses and economic sectors are relying on technological advancements that facilitate them to establish an integrated value chain. Using these advancements strategically and appropriately can also enhance productivity and improved competitiveness. Likewise, governments and global aid organizations have seen these advancements as essential instruments for national integration since they are capable of empowering more prominent access to wellbeing and educational services, and developing economical opportunities to open doors for underprivileged communities. Despite of all the advancements of Information and Communication Technologies, the phenomenon known as the Digital Divide has left a significant number of individuals, communities and even businesses divided into two separate categories. The Digital Divide is typically described as the division between the individuals and communities with access to information technologies and those without it. The fact that the uses of computer, Internet and other technological means have significantly filtered its way into modern economy through employment and commerce, the inability to gain access or operate the technologies is an effective challenge created by the Digital Divide for the people without such ... • 3. Differences Between American Colonies And New England... The American colonies were a diverse and interesting people. The colonies are typically split between the New England colonies and the Southern colonies. While both sets of colonies would eventually make up what is now the original thirteen colonies of the United States, they both had their similarities and differences. What led to the differences of the two sets of colonies and how were they similar? This question was relevant then and it is relevant in today s world. The southern colonies were mainly controlled by an elite class of planters that owned the most land and had the most slaves. Below them were the small farmers that had a few slaves and much smaller plots of land and at the bottom were the landless white people. This social ladder made up the economic and political worlds in the south. The planters were the most powerful politically and the most wealthy. This is in sharp contrast to the New England colonies that were more focused on preserving a familial line and focused on their families rather than on the next crop growth. The south had very fertile land and this led to the planters taking over the social landscape. In New England the land wasn t as good and the population wasn t made up of mostly farm and crop owners.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Essay on Human Observation Project Human Observation Project General Psychology Psyc 2301 Jazmin Rolon 20 August 2012 I.Problem: Prosocial behavior refers to voluntary actions that are intended to help or benefit another individual or group of individuals (Eisenberg and Mussen 1989). This definition refers to consequences of the people who do the actions rather than the motivations behind those actions. These behaviors include a broad range of activities: sharing, comforting, rescuing, and helping. Though prosocial behavior can be confused with altruism, they are, in fact, two distinct concepts. Prosocial behavior refers to a pattern of activity, whereas, altruism is the motivation to help others out of pure regard for their needs rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... VIII.Theory: Soldiers are trained to be altruist even when they don t agree with it they are taught a sense of self service and duty and no matter how they feel about someone or what the person looks like they are going to help. Males and females soldiers the same. IX.Hypothesis: Between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 on Monday and Tuesday afternoon adults and children walking from the Fort Hood Commissary s parking lot to the store and back, tend to be more helpful of a woman that is dressed up and seems attractive with some items that she dropped than they do to a dirty not so attractive woman on the same situation on the following day. X.Procedure or Methodology: The investigator dressed up and made herself look appealing and acted very friendly. She smiled at the subjects as they approached her, she purposely dropped some items to see who would help her. An assistant was trained to stand at corner to observe from a different point of view. On the following day at the same days and times the investigator made herself look dirty and not as attractive as she looked the previous day. • 5. Railroad Safety After reading the information, and watching the videos on keeping us safe, and protecting us from accidents, I realized that railroad crossing is a serious thing, and we need to be careful when we are crossing the tracks. I have realized that it comes down to being smart, careful, and using common sense. When red lights are blinking, you should stop, and be extremely cautious. LIke it said in one of the videos, it is not worth it to risk anything. If we are all just a little smarter when we are around railroad crossings, and we use our heads we should all be fine. I think another key to being safe is keeping the distractions in our pockets. If we are on our phone we are much less likely to pay attention to our surroundings, and what is going... • 6. A Comparison Between Neanderthal And Modern Human Dna Introduction Homo heidelbergensis was an early human species that lived around 700,000 to 200,000 years ago. These pioneers were the first to live in colder climates, hunt large animals with wooden spears, and utilize fire. They were also our first ancestors to construct simple shelters out of wood and rock. Interestingly a comparison between Neanderthal and modern human DNA suggests the two lineages diverged from a common ancestor, most likely Homo heidelbergensis! Discovery On October 21, 1907, Daniel Hartmann spotted a jaw while working in a sandpit in Mauer, near Heidelberg, Germany (49.3389В° N, 8.7986В° E.) This evidence shows they flourished in a rich and diverse cooling epoch called the Pleistocene, which was a cooling period with intermittent glaciers covering North America and Europe (Eldredge 2000) and deserts spread over northern Africa separating the populations of plants and animals, including humans (Zuk 2013). These cooling and recurrent glaciations led to the physical adaptation of shorter and wider bodies in an attempt to conserve heat in this cooler climate. Dating Many fossils of this species have been dated with various methods. One such was by sequencing mitochondrial DNA from a femur bone found at the Sima de los Huesos ( pit of bones ) in northern Spain by Svante Paabo, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. After sequencing, researchers compared the result with genetic information from Neanderthals and Denisovans and dated them to over 300,000 years (Meyer 2013). Description The first preserved bones for this species was a lower jaw with teeth, found near Heidelberg, Germany. Other fossils include 5,500 bone fragments from 28 individuals found in The Pit of Bones , Spain, and possibly a fossilized skullcap discovered in northern India s Narmada Valley that currently represents the easternmost occurrence (Meyer 2013). • 7. Free Will Debate The Debate over Free will Free will is the capacity to select between different possible ways of action. We are given free will to make our own choice. This free will is a gift, so we can decide the way to live. Still, we should keep in mind that the free will is a responsibility and a gift. The choices people make are a part of the free will and both are compatible. Thus, the idea of free has been argued by numerous philosophers. Therefore, my explanation will base on free will and the consequences of the choice. When you are given the ability to decide on your own, it is free will. For instance, a person was given a personal choice to make and he said to his friend; Do not make me think; tell me what to do. This person did not want to utilize free will and decide on his own, he wanted to be told. Likewise, people have a diverse view about free will. Despite their different perspective, free will is a gift. It comes to the point each person ends up to have different variety of free will. In addition to this gift of free will, you are not preprogrammed to please anyone as a robot. Therefore, we can have visualized it this way; having a gift that is mechanically or one ... • 8. A Study On Postpartum Sex Taboo Essay In an attempt to explain why certain societies have a postpartum sex taboo, anthropologist John Whiting discovered the statistical association that, Societies with apparently low protein diets tend to have long postpartum sex taboos (Ember 54). Based off of this association, Whiting went on to theorize that a long postpartum sex taboomay be an adaptation to tropical environments, particularly where the major food staples are low in protein (Ember 54). He argued that children in these areas were prone to the protein deficiency disease called kawashiorkor (Ember 54), so if mothers abstained from sex for a year, therefore eliminating the possibility of having another child, the first child would be able to nurse longer and possibly have a lower risk for contracting the disease. In order to test his theory, Whiting sampled 172 societies (Ember 62) and divided them into a table based off of the duration the postpartum sex taboo, with a long taboo being anything over a year and short being anything under. Additionally, he also divided the societies into high, medium, and low protein societies, with low surviving on root and tree crops (Ember 61), medium on cereal crops (Ember 61), and high on hunting, fishing, or herding (Ember 61). Personally, when reading about the theory and analyzing the evidence supporting it, I am accepting of the theory s proposition, but do not support it entirely, simply because I feel that there should be a bit more convincing evidence. ... Despite the consistent opposition to apartheid within of South Africa and around the world, South African laws remained in action for over 50 years. In 1950, the Afrikaners prohibited marriage between different races. However, during and after the Partition, sexual violence, both towards men and women, escalated, resulting in the rape and abduction of over 80,000 women. Cracking India, by Bapsi Sidhwa, tells a story that highlights these violent acts by both Muslims and Hindus, through the eyes of a disabled young Parsi girl named Lenny, who witnesses first hand the violenceof Partition when she mistakenly participates in the abduction of her ayah, Shanta. Throughout Cracking India, Lenny observes as the religions involved in Partition become increasingly violent towards both men and women, within their own religions and against others. Lenny, who begins the novel as a very naГЇve young Parsi girl, comes to understand that the foundations of violence in her surroundings are largely gendered and that the experience of this violence is differentiated along gender lines (Rastegar 27). Lenny witnesses the evolution of Ayah s suitors, (who are Parsi, Hinduand Muslim), from men interested in being with Ayah to men who are desperate to control Ayah. As Partition gets more violent, Ice Candy Man, one of Ayah s suitors who is Muslim, takes on the role of a minor nationalist leader in their area and eventually coordinates a mob of Muslims to come to the Sethi house an abduct Lenny, who is Hindu (Rastegar 27). By telling their stories as persons who have emerged themselves into a new culture, but at the same retained vestiges of the old, Olaudah Equiano and Maxine Kingston are exemplifying a duality in cultural identity, that is often times lost. This personal connection to the native culture is an important part to any cultural identity, because it provides a means of introspection, an ability to determine one s perception of oneself. The ability to perceive oneself is important because it permits one to look at and choose to discard or retain parts of one s various cultures into one s personal cultural identity. However, in other aspects, Equiano is able to better explore portions of his cultural identity, because he has made a direct personal connection to the culture. In this case, it is the slave culture that he was forced into. Because of the intense experiences he has within this culture, it plays a large role in his cultural identity. These experiences include his numerous journeys on his masters ships, which combined with his religious explorations at the time led him to desire to become an Englishman. At the same time, they allowed him to create a broader identity, because he saw the connections between himself and other cultures (such as Turkish and Jewish cultures of the time.) The second crucial factor in determining the cultural identity, and is shown in The Interesting Narrative, is the time that one is exposed to a culture. It is not difficult to determine that in Equiano it appears his native culture had little direct impact on him. • 17. Southern Vowel Shift In Southern English Introduction Southern American English is one of the most widely recognized dialects of American English; however, it is also the most negatively viewed dialect of American English followed closely only by New York City speech. With this negative view comes the perception that those that speak this dialect of Standard American English are ignorant. This could not be farther from the truth. According to many linguists, the Southern American English dialect is rooted in British regional dialect and is the only dialect that still sounds much like our ancestors. (PBS) Some unique features of Southern American English are well known such as saying y all for you all; useta for used to; and fixin to for I intend to, along with the well known southern drawl that comes from the Southern Vowel Shift. Although the Southern English dialect touches most of the southern states within the United States, Louisiana does not consist of the same features due to the French influence on language. Phonology Southern American English possesses many phonological features that make it unique from Standard American English (*SAE), but the Southern Vowel Shift may be the most recognized feature of the Southern English dialect. The Southern Vowel Shift affected most of the southern states, but each stage of this shift may have impacted different regions of the south. We think of an emo as a gloomy, depressed, self harming, and a bad influence type of person, but it is not always the truth. A shy friend of mine, named Eduardo Medina, can be considered as a deviant or the one that does not fit the stereotypical attitude of an emo. During our time in high school, he spends his time hanging out with my other friends and I and even though he is not the talkative type, he seems to be comfortable with us as he cracks a smile and ecstatically laughs at our jokes and his own jokes (Inciong). • 19. The Influence Of The Monster In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein What indeed makes one a monster? Is it our physical appearance, our direct or indirect actions, our secrets? In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley portrays Victor s creation as a monster but throughout the novel we begin to realize the real monster is Victor, due to his self centered personality, his abnormal view on life, and the abandonment of his creation to show us society s perspective on what a monster is, is inaccurate because the social norm can be just as monstrous. Victor s selfishness is one of the several characteristics that makes him a monster in this novel. Many casualties in the book were due to Victor even if he was not the actual killer. When the creature murdered William, Victor still kept his creation a secret. Justine was blamed for the murder and even when she falsely confessed to being guilty he still did not speak a word about his invention. The reason that was holding him back from revealing what he had made was he did not want to look like a fool. This is shown when he says A thousand times rather would I have confessed myself guilty of the of the crime ascribed to Justine, but I was absent when it was committed, and such a declaration would have been as the ravings of a madman... (Shelley 83). Another example of Victor s narcissistic personality is how he used Elizabeth and their wedding just to lure in the creature. Victor s plan was to give the creature what he wanted which was a wedding, and when he was close enough, he would shoot him. We ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The lines of evidence I can draw is that due to the advance technology that archeologist were able to find that newly discovered monument is still standing, but is buried an reason for this could be due to a nature or land build up from how long ago this could date back to. According to James G Webster, media can be defined as a way of communicating with the general public; newspapers, magazines, television, and billboards. Being exposed to mass media s glorification of slim and modified bodies can over time lead to a negative body image, and that possibly leading to extreme dieting and mental health problems, such as an eating disorder. Body image involves one s perception, imagination, emotions, and physical sensations of and about our bodies (Lightstone, 2012). Lightstone also argued that body image is not based on facts, but in our nature and influenced more by self esteem than by actual attractiveness judged by others. The authors believe men and women of this time have more struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The authors arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today s society marriageis becoming more of a trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: ...an economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended familyand larger community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith (520). The blank slate is a theory utilized by some linguistic analysts that believe people are born with no innateness or hardwiring from genetics, but rather develop their character through the influence of their surrounding culture. Pinker strongly claims in his Ted Talk entitled, Human Nature and the Blank Slate, that children are born with predisposed traits, although everyone shares similar behaviors and feelings, such as aesthetics, affection, and age statuses, and even refers to this as common sense. Pinker also uses genetic science and neurobiology to disclaim utilizations of the blank slate as an explanation for language development. A study done by neurobiologist Paul Thompson measured grey matter in areas of the brain between different pairs of people. Those who were unrelated showed no similarities while fraternal twins shared many, and identical twins, who share much of their DNA, showed a large amount of resemblances, proving that genetics are more influential than culture in shaping character. He ultimately claims that scientific studies show that biological siblings separated at birth are more identical in personality than adopted siblings sharing the same household because he says that everything that happens to you in a given home over all of those years, appears to leave no permanent stamp on your personality of intellect. He controversially argues that many people, like Skinner, adopt the blank slate theory because if people are blank slates, then it can be assumed that everyone is equal, however denying this assertion justifies prejudice and discrimination if one s slate is not clean because they may have more of it than others, whatever the trait may be. Therefore, they should reflect a person accurately, and if they do not, it is important to question if the employer is liable for writing a bad reference. This will be discussed in relation to the common law duty of care, as well as being linked to the liability of Universities in respect of students. Discussion: Firstly, it is important to establish whether the employer owes a duty of care or not. The case of Caparo v Dickman resulted in a three stage test about duty of care and to address responsibility in determining where the liability of the financial loss lies. The test ruled The harm caused by the negligent actions must be reasonably foreseeable; the relationship between the parties to the dispute must be one of reasonable proximity; and it must be fair, reasonable, and just to impose liability. This test provides a qualification for establishing duty of care. Linked to this, in the Spring v Guardian Assurance case it was decided that there was a duty of care owed to the employee. If they duty is violated, then the liability of the economic losses suffered by the employee are given to the employer. Lord Woolf believed that it was necessary for the employer to be liable in damages as the law of defamation does not provide adequate remedy for damages caused as it requires malice not just negligence. Kennedy himself stated that leadership and learning are indispensable to each other , which can only further the argument of a necessity for a strong education system to develop a solid base early in a student s life. Amelia Arcamone Makinano brings forth this debate and discussion in her book KRONOS: All Devouring Federal Reserve, highlighting the profound implications of the federal government s grip in the educationsystem. In KRONOS , Amelia Arcamone Makinano wisely asserts that illiteracy and the lack of education in American public schools has had indirect ties to the state of the country s welfare and handling of the economy.... Arcamone Makinano utilizes a structure of example followed by analysis to further her arguments of the present day crisis of education, while citing the main source of constant problems coming from the Federal Reserve Board, whose hold on the education system has been depleting the strength of the American education system. SAD is characterized by excessive anxiety concerning separation from home or from those to whom a child is attached. • 43. Rio Sonora Valley Incident Analysis In August 2014, while I was on holidays in a remote region of Mexico called The Rio Sonora Valley, I witnessed the most outrageous natural disaster I have ever seen. It was caused by the spilling of more than 40,000m3 of copper sulphate in the river, which savagely polluted it and affected thousands of people, cattle and fish among others. This particular incident triggered my research about water pollution, with a special focus on copper, and led me to the discovery of chitosan as a possible cleanser of river waters. Copper commonly occurs as a pollutant in surface fresh waters and it can be extremely toxic to fish , and so its removal is often necessary . Remember, your saddlebags will be holding some of your most important stuff, and since they are usually out of sight, out of mind, it is easy to forget about them when it comes time to care for your bike. Remember the days before you had motorcycle saddlebags? I sure do. I used to wear a backpack which, when loaded, would offset the balance and sometimes make for a scary ride. If I ever rode through wet weather, my gear in the backpack would almost always get soaked. Any more often than this and you are wasting your time, and the cleaning product. If you ride in the sun, or your bike spends time parked out in the sun, a cleaner/conditioner with UV (ultraviolet) protection is a must. The sun will wreak havoc on your leather saddlebags, drying them out and will turn them into brittle and useless scraps of leather. When using the cleaning/conditioning product for the first time, wipe it on a small area on the underside, and look for any staining or discoloration before cleaning the whole bag. Some leather experts say to stay away from products containing petroleum products. My rule of thumb is to use something that others have had great success with regardless of the ingredients. I try to look for leather products that penetrate deeply and offer good moisture protection. One great old standby is saddle soap. Saddle soap is as old as leather (it seems), is cheap and is very gentle on the leather. Some say it s old fashioned, and compared to modern conditioning products, doesn t offer enough protection from the elements. Sometimes these cleaning/conditioning products will have strong chemicals that will give off nasty fumes.Try to use them outdoors so you don t inhale these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Slavery In Modern Society Does slavery still exist in modern society? When a person is involuntarily subjected to another person as property instead of a human, it is slavery. Although people have a consensus in a civilized society that there is barely any slavery in the modern world, in fact, slavery has never left human society, and the manifestations of slaveryvary as time passes by. The essence of the slavery system is uneven power distribution, and the struggle of slavery is woven into the conflict of power. In my opinion, slavery has and always will be a problem in America, because of historical racism, institutionalized racism, and the power dynamics of slavery hidden within it. Firstly, the historical racism influences the concept of slavery to a large extent. This racism is hard to eliminate because it is deeply rooted in the American culture and history. Since 1619 (American Anti Slavery and Civil Rights Timeline), African slaves existed in America. The invention of cotton, sugar, and tobacco aggravated their suffering from inhuman exploitation. In The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, former slave Douglass described slaveholders violent acts towards the slaves including the all too common whippings and their miserable living conditions. The slaves lived worse than animals and their identities were stripped down. (Douglass 10) After the outbreak of the Civil War and the publishing of Emancipation Proclamation, it seemed that America has stepped out of the slavery structure. However, ... If any one of these targets were not being met, today, some agencies could potentially review a child s safety under this current legislation. A second part of this new legislation was the encouragement of multi agencies to work together this idea came as a direct consequence of the failings in relation to Victoria Climbie. With this, a database accessible by all authorities involved with children and young people was set up so that records can be maintained effectively and information can be shared easily. Finally, based on the initiative of agencies working together to support children and young people, Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCB s) were created within LEA s. • 47. Social Work Values Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social workhas been utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, local parishes to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of donations to the poor. (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as, promoting social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated equally, with fairness and are provided the same opportunities. In addition to this definition, some value assumptions have to be clearly made in order to support the profession of social work. The values that best compliment the above definition are most suitably described in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When customers pay a premium on their insurance, BH then takes that premium paid and uses it to buy stakes in other companies. Which is how Berkshire Hathaway has been able to buy stakes in so many companies and essentially as well as metaphorically spin their straw into gold. For the more technical stock picker, it is a good thing to know that BH has had a steady appreciation over the years with the exception of 2008; being the largest decline known for BH. The good news is that unlike a lot of companies that suffered from the 2008 crisis BH came out of it head strong and has surpassed the previous price at which the decline began. These stocks are the type that long term investors like. This is because they can survive crises such as the one six years ago. Moreover the long term investor is good for a company because usually these investors are the ones attending board meetings and placing votes that best further the company s success. In contrast there is the short term investor who, most of the time, only cares about a profit and lacks the interest in the long term life of the company. This is not the case for BH, however.
