This document summarizes a research paper that proposes using a Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) to optimize the control of photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to distribution networks in Egypt. The high penetration of PV systems can cause voltage issues in distribution grids. The paper aims to enhance distribution network performance by optimally designing a proportional-integral controller for PV inverters using WOA. WOA is inspired by the hunting behavior of humpback whales and is applied to minimize voltage deviations across the network. The effectiveness of the WOA-designed controller is evaluated through simulations and compared to controllers designed using genetic algorithms.
Design methodology of smart photovoltaic plant IJECEIAES
In this article, we present a new methodology to design an intelligent photovoltaic power plant connected to an electrical grid with storage to supply the laying hen rearing centers. This study requires a very competent design methodology in order to optimize the production and consumption of electrical energy. Our contribution consists in proposing a robust dimensioning synthesis elaborated according to a data flow chart. To achieve this objective, the photovoltaic system was first designed using a deterministic method, then the software "Homer" was used to check the feasibility of the design. Then, controllers (fuzzy logic) were used to optimize the energy produced and consumed. The power produced by the photovoltaic generator (GPV) is optimized by two fuzzy controllers: one to extract the maximum energy and another to control the batteries. The energy consumed by the load is optimized by a fuzzy controller that regulates the internal climate of the livestock buildings. The proposed control strategies are developed and implemented using MATLAB/Simulink.

Stochastic control for optimal power flow in islanded microgridIJECEIAES
The problem of optimal power flow (OPF) in an islanded mircrogrid (MG) for hybrid power system is described. Clearly, it deals with a formulation of an analytical control model for OPF. The MG consists of wind turbine generator, photovoltaic generator, and diesel engine generator (DEG), and is in stochastic environment such as load change, wind power fluctuation, and sun irradiation power disturbance. In fact, the DEG fails and is repaired at random times so that the MG can significantly influence the power flow, and the power flow control faces the main difficulty that how to maintain the balance of power flow? The solution is that a DEG needs to be scheduled. The objective of the control problem is to find the DEG output power by minimizing the total cost of energy. Adopting the Rishel’s famework and using the Bellman principle, the optimality conditions obtained satisfy the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Finally, numerical examples and sensitivity analyses are included to illustrate the importance and effectiveness of the proposed model.

Doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) based wind farms are capable of providing reactive power compensation. Compensation capability enhancement using reactors such as distributed static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) while connecting distribution generation (DG) systems to grid is imperative. This paper presents an optimal placement and sizing of offshore wind farms in a coastal distribution system that is emulated on an IEEE 33 bus system. A multi-objective formulation for optimal placement and sizing of the offshore wind farms with both the location and size constraints is developed. Teaching learning algorithm is used to optimize the multi-objective function constraining on the capacity and location of the offshore wind farms. The proposed formulation is a multi-objective problem for placement of the wind generator in the power system with dynamic wind supply to the power system. The random wind speed is generated as the input and the wind farm output generated to perform the optimal sizing and placement in the distributed system. MATLAB based simulation developed is found to be efficient and robust.

PI and LQR controllers for Frequency Regulation including Wind GenerationIJECEIAES
The increasing use of renewable technologies such as wind turbines in power systems may require the contribution of these new sources into grid ancillary services, such as Load Frequency Control. Hence, this work dealt with the performance comparison of two traditional control structures, PI and LQR, for secondary regulation of Load Frequency Control with the participation of variable-speed wind turbines. For this purpose, the doubly-fed induction generator wind turbine was modeled with additional control loops for emulation of the inertial response of conventional machines for frequency regulation tasks. Performance of proposed strategies was verified through simulation in a benchmark adapted from the WSCC 3 machines 9-bus test system. Results showed overall superior performance for LQR controller, although requiring more strenuous control effort from conventional units than PI control.
A cost effective computational design of maximum power point tracking for pho...IJECEIAES
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is one of the essential controller operations of any Photo-Voltaic (PV) cell design. Developing an efficient MPPT system includes a significant challenge as there are various forms of uncertainty factors that results in higher degree of fluctuation in current and voltage in PV cell. After reviewing existing system, it has been found that there is no presence of any benchmarked model to ensure a better form of computational model. Hence, this paper presents a novel and very simple design of MPPT without using any form of complex design mechanism nor including any form of frequently used iterative approach. The proposed model is completely focused on developing an algorithm that takes the input of voltage (open circuit), current (short circuit), and max power in order to obtain the peak power to be extracted from the PV cells. The study outcome shows faster response time and better form of analysis of current-voltage-power for given state of PV cells.
Normally, the character of the wind energy as a renewable energy sources has uncertainty in generation. To resolve the Optimal Power Flow (OPF) drawback, this paper proposed a replacement Hybrid Multi Objective Artificial Physical Optimization (HMOAPO) algorithmic rule, which does not require any management parameters compared to different meta-heuristic algorithms within the literature. Artificial Physical Optimization (APO), a moderately new population-based intelligence algorithm, shows fine performance on improvement issues. Moreover, this paper presents hybrid variety of Animal Migration Optimization (AMO) algorithmic rule to express the convergence characteristic of APO. The OPF drawback is taken into account with six totally different check cases, the effectiveness of the proposed HMOAPO technique is tested on IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 118-bus and IEEE 300-bus check system. The obtained results from the HMOAPO algorithm is compared with the other improvement techniques within the literature. The obtained comparison results indicate that proposed technique is effective to succeed in best resolution for the OPF drawback.

Sampling-Based Model Predictive Control of PV-Integrated Energy Storage Syste...Power System Operation
This paper proposes a novel control solution designed to solve the local and grid-connected
distributed energy resources (DERs) management problem by developing a generalizable framework capable
of controlling DERs based on forecasted values and real-time energy prices. The proposed model uses
sampling-based model predictive control (SBMPC), together with the real-time price of energy and forecasts
of PV and load power, to allocate the dispatch of the available distributed energy resources (DERs) while
minimizing the overall cost. The strategy developed aims to nd the ideal combination of solar, grid, and
energy storage (ES) power with the objective of minimizing the total cost of energy of the entire system.
Both ofine and controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) results are presented for a 7-day test case scenario
and compared with two manual base test cases and four baseline optimization algorithms (Genetic Algo-
rithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Quadratic Programming interior-point method (QP-IP),
and Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP)) designed to solve the optimization problem considering the
current status of the system and also its future states. The proposed model uses a 24-hour prediction horizon
with a 15-minute control horizon. The results demonstrate substantial cost and execution time savings when
compared to the other baseline control algorithms.
Recent many works have concentrated on
dynamically turning on/off some base stations (BSs) in order to
improve energy efficiency in radio access networks (RANs). In
this survey, we broaden the research over BS switching
operations, which should competition up with traffic load
variations. The proposed method formulate the traffic variations
as a Markov decision process which should differ from dynamic
traffic loads which are still quite challenging to precisely forecast.
A reinforcement learning framework based BS switching
operation scheme was designed in order to minimize the energy
consumption of RANs. Furthermore a transfer actor-critic
algorithm (TACT) is used to speed up the ongoing learning
process, which utilizes the transferred learning expertise in
historical periods or neighboring regions. The proposed TACT
algorithm performs jumpstart and validates the feasibility of
significant energy efficiency increment.
Harvesting in electric vehicles: Combining multiple power tracking and fuel-c...IJECEIAES
Exploitation of green energy sources is essential to diminish the deterioration of our environment. The energy harvesting, represents an alternative to achieve greater range in electric and hybrid vehicles. An energy management strategy (EMS) must be optimized to obtain the best benefits in such vehicles, which is not a trivial task. If harvesting or energy recovery devices are added, the EMS becomes a dual-purpose algorithm: minimizing fuel consumption and maximizing energy harvest through maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers. Known studies consider separate EMS, one for traction and another for regenerative braking, without considering harvest devices such as solar panels, regenerative suspension, thermal generators, among others. Furthermore, the electronic power converters used, are not designed to handle such unequal power levels. In this article, an electronic platform to include multiple energy harvesting devices in a fuel-cell hybrid electric vehicle, was presented together with a multiple MPPT-EMS. The EMS is easily implementable, and considers quasi-constant cell energy extraction and filtering of current transients to the battery bank ensuring the longevity of the devices. A new mathematical model of the platform, a closed loop stability analysis, and numerical and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validations were presented. Some experimental validation results were also provided.
Transient response mitigation using type-2 fuzzy controller optimized by grey...IJECEIAES
Long high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link is commonly used to transmit electrical energy via land or under-sea cable. The long HVDC avoids reactive power losses (RPL) and power stability problems (PSP). On the contrary, the RPL and PSP phenomena occur in long high voltage alternative current-link (HVAC) caused by the high reactive component in the HVAC-link. However, the HVDC produces a high and slow transient current response (TCR) on the high value of the up-ramp rate. Interval type-2 fuzzy (IT2F) control on converter-side HVDC is proposed to mitigate this TCR problem. The IT2F is optimized by grey wolf optimizer (GWO) to adjust input-output IT2F parameters optimally. The performance of IT2F-GWO is assessed by the minimum value of integral time squared error (ITSE), peak overshoot, and settling time of the TCR. The IT2FCGWO performance is validated by the performance of IT2F control that is optimized by genetic algorithm (IT2F-GA) and proportional integral (PI) controller. Simulation results show that the IT2F-GWO performs better with small ITSE, low peak overshoot, and shorter settling times than competing controllers.

Maximum power point tracking and space vector modulation control of quasi-z-s...IJECEIAES
The quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) become one of the most promising power electronic converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications, due to its capability to perform a buck-boost conversion of the input voltage in a single stage. The control strategy based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and proportional integral (PI) controller are well known in grid-connected with traditional configuration but not in qZSI. This paper presents a control strategy for qZSI grid-connected based on the MPPT algorithm and the linear control by PI controllers. This is complemented by the capability to efficiently transfer the harvested power to the grid, ensuring a unity power factor. The proposed control strategy effectively separates the control mechanisms for the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) sides by utilizing the two control variables, the shoot-through duty ratio and the modulation index. An adapted space vector modulation technique is then utilized to generate the switching pulse width modulation (PWM) signals, using these two control variables as inputs. The proposed approach was tested and validated under MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS software.
Modified variable neighborhood search algorithm for maximum power point track...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Photovoltaic (PV) systems are being increasingly popular for power generation from solar radiation as the usage of renewable energy grows. To improve the efficiency, the system should operate at its the maximum power point. Hence, several algorithms have been developed for this purpose. Continuous tracking for the maximum power point often leads to heavy energy loss. Furthermore, partial shading can dramatically lower the performance of the system. A modified variable neighborhood search algorithm is proposed resulting zero oscillations around the operating point. A set of variables are used to improve the system’s configurability in various atmospheric and geographical conditions. Simulation result proves the operation of the proposed algorithm, its accuracy, and its fast response time.
Voltage and frequency control of microgrid in presence of micro-turbine inter...IJECEIAES
The active and reactive load changes have a significant impact on voltage
and frequency. In this paper, in order to stabilize the microgrid (MG) against
load variations in islanding mode, the active and reactive power of all
distributed generators (DGs), including energy storage (battery), diesel
generator, and micro-turbine, are controlled. The micro-turbine generator is
connected to MG through a three-phase to three-phase matrix converter, and
the droop control method is applied for controlling the voltage and
frequency of MG. In addition, a method is introduced for voltage and
frequency control of micro-turbines in the transition state from gridconnected mode to islanding mode. A novel switching strategy of the matrix
converter is used for converting the high-frequency output voltage of the
micro-turbine to the grid-side frequency of the utility system. Moreover,
using the switching strategy, the low-order harmonics in the output current
and voltage are not produced, and consequently, the size of the output filter
would be reduced. In fact, the suggested control strategy is load-independent
and has no frequency conversion restrictions. The proposed approach for
voltage and frequency regulation demonstrates exceptional performance and
favorable response across various load alteration scenarios. The suggested
strategy is examined in several scenarios in the MG test systems, and the
simulation results are addressed.
Electric Vehicle as an Energy Storage for Grid Connected Solar Power SystemIAES-IJPEDS
In the past few years the growing demand for electricity and serious concern
for the environment have given rise to the growth of sustainable sources like
wind, solar, tidal, biomass etc. The technological advancement in power
electronics has led to the extensive usage of solar power. Solar power output
varies with the weather conditions and under shading conditions. With the
increasing concerns of the impacts of the high penetration of Photovoltaic
(PV) systems, a technical study about their effects on the power quality of
the utility grid is required. This paper investigates the functioning of a gridtied
PV system along with maximum power point tracking (MPPT)
algorithm. The effects of varying atmospheric conditions like solar irradiance
and temperature are also taken into account. It is proposed in this work that
an Electric Vehicle (EV) can be used as an energy storage to stabilize the
power supplied to the grid from the photovoltaic resources. A coordinated
control is necessary for the EV to obtain desired outcome. The modeling of
the PV and EV system is carried out in PSCAD and the proposed idea is
verified through simulation results utilizing real field data for solar irradiance
and temperature.
