This HIBB first covers the physical components of a computer and their usage, such as keyboards, monitors, and USB cables. It also includes how to use some of these physical components, such as moving a mouse and how to insert a CD. It then moves on to basic interactions with a computer, including logging in, opening programs, and saving files. At the end of this HIBB, students will be aware of the major physical components of a computer. In addition to this, students will be able to perform some basic functions on the computer, including logging in to the computer, opening programs, saving files.
Computers are not only storage devices and processing units, but also are excellent communication media. They are the means to access the Internet and get connected to the world.

Software updates are important to your digital safety and cyber security. Do not click on that “Remind me later” button or at least don’t put off updating your software for long. The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. HARDWARE: Parts of the computer that you can see and touch
For example: CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and other items
called hardware devices
SOFTWARE : Instructions or programs that control the computer and tell the
hardware what to do.
For example: Operating System, Application Software, etc.
4. SUPERCOMPUTER - a large very fast mainframe used especially for scientific
computations.
5. MAINFRAME COMPUTER - A mainframe (also known as 'big iron') is a high-
performance computer used for large-scale computing purposes that require
greater availability and security. Sometimes called centralized systems.
6. MINICOMPUTERS - a computer of medium power, more than a microcomputer
but less than a mainframe.
7. MICROCOMPUTERS – a compact computer, with less capacity and capability
than a minicomputer, consisting of a microprocessor and other components.
PERSONAL COMPUTER OR PC (DESKTOP) - a compact computer that uses a

1 Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes or 1 Billion bytes
1 Terabyte = 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes or 1 Trillion bytes
Every file used in a software program by the computer has a specific file size.

- Starting a computer

- Network Drives F or higher for each network drive
