The Sword And Shield Metaphor
Audience Driven, Comedian Approved
Richard Pryor once said, There s a thin line between to laugh with and to laugh at (A Z Quotes). Leon
Rappoport, a professor at Kansas State University, believed in the same thin line as Pryor. Rappoport
received his BA and MS at New York University, and completed his PhD in 1963 at the University of
Colorado(Kansas State University). He studied psychological sciences, and concentrated his studies in
decision making and human judgment, even writing a book called Punchlines: The Case for Racial,
Ethnic, and Gender Humor (Kansas State University). In another book, The Sword and Shield
Metaphor and Other Perspectives, Rappoport claims that humor depends on how the audience receives
humor. The audience can either be on the side of the audience that is getting laughed at, or they can be
on the side of the audience that is laughing with other people. In the sword and shield metaphor the
audience faces two contrasting sides that deal with stereotype humor. The first side is the sword. The
sword represents a weapon designed to mock and insult minority groups. The second side is the
shield, which can be represented to serve the interests of minority groups. The shield side of the
metaphor can be used in an effective way by minorities as a way to claim pride in their identity.
Together, these two sides can either offend a group, or make them laugh. For example, Rappoport
includes a joke to further prove that a joke can be offensive,

Versailles Treaty Dbq
How did the Versailles Treaty help cause WWII? The Versailles Treaty was created in order to prevent
any further wars from happening such as the calamity that was WWI, however could it be the very
reason the Germans felt they needed to strike back at their enemies and cause an even greater calamity
than the first World War known as WWII? After the first world war, the Versailles Treaty was created
by the nations that won the first world war. Although it was majorly created by the delegates of the 3
biggest powers: Premier George Clemenceau of France, Prime Minister David Prime Lloyd of Britain,
and President Woodrow Wilson of the U.S. It consisted of terms that Germany had to abide by after
they were forced to sign it after being ignored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Document A discusses this by showing a map of what the geography of Germany had been after the
Versailles Treaty terms, with Alsace and Lorraine, their main production of coal, now in possession of
France. To put it another way, the process of Germany being stripped of some its land through the
Versailles Treaty s terms had provided an opportunity for the Germans to initiate war in order to regain
their land and resources back, along with power. However, this is not the only instance of this, another
document validates that the Versailles Treaty had helped cause WWII through its unjust terms. That
document would be the famous book created by Adolf Hitler himself, Mein Kampf . In this segment of
the book, it can be paraphrased that Hitler feels Germany is naive for believing that the Versailles
Treaty will solve the conflicts between all of Europe, instead he recommends that Germany goes to
war in order to destroy the unjust terms that oppress them because the restoration of Germany can
only be achieved through blood. In other words, Hitler is saying that Germany needs to fight in order
to rid themselves of the restrictions imposed by the Versailles Treaty because any peaceful means are
flawed. Consequently, it can be inferred that because of the Versailles Treaty, it allowed Hitler to
persuade Germany to fight to made the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty void all the more easy and
because of this Germany becomes more of a threat thus making the nations ally and fight creating

Columbia Disaster Research Paper
The Columbia disaster, a catastrophic event where a space shuttle broke apart during re entry. All
seven of the crew members were killed on that day. This event really shook up NASA, both good and
bad. The following days, tons of ground reports were done, looking for the debris of the spacecraft.
They also analyzed the footage and other reports of the shuttle. This is what happened after the
Columbia disaster; so that begs the question, what s the full story of the Columbia disaster?
On January 16th, 2003, the spacecraft named Columbia was launched on this day and this is where the
story begins. The Columbia was the first ever spaceship to reach into space in 1981; and unfortunately,
this would be its 28th and final journey (Dooling, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After tons of searching, they were only able to find 40% of the shuttle and a little bit of the recorded
research (Dowling What Caused the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster? ). They also found out that this
catastrophe could have been avoided if word of the hole got out. They could ve had the Columbia wait
till the 15th and had the following planned spacecraft, the Atlantis, could ve moved up its launch to
the 10th, leaving a small window for repairs or for them to get off the Atlantis ( Columbia disaster ).
Subsequently, major changes were made to the space program, particularly in spacecraft safety
(Moskowitz How the Columbia Shuttle Disaster Changed Spacecraft Safety Forever ). They added
new practices and new rules for space crafts to be conditioned for space (Moskowitz How the
Columbia Shuttle Disaster Changed Spacecraft Safety Forever ). One of the biggest consequences of
this was the space shuttle program being grounded for more than 2 years (Dooling, Columbia disaster
). The next space shuttle launch wouldn t be until July 26, 2005 (Dooling, Columbia disaster ).
However, the next space shuttle within the fleet that the Columbia was a part of wouldn t launch until

Conctionalism In The Theory Of The Critical Accounting Theory
Critical Accounting Theory
According to Oluwadare and Samy (2015) from the Canadian Social Science, Critical Accounting
Theory is about understanding accounting in the context of its broad socio politics, evaluating the
accounting policies and practices that exist, and offering means of working towards more enabling
accountings. It generally puts a focus on accounting s role to keep those in control of particular
resources in their positions while those without any capital to have their voices undermined or
restricted. Critical theory advances beyond the rational view of the traditional functionalist in terms of
accounting and accounting research. It aims to help in the disclosure of the accountability of
organisations as well as increasing the environmental stability. This is theory is contextual, meaning it
focuses more on political, economic and social consequences (Laughlin, 1999). It could be said that it
is similar to corporate social responsibility, but it is actually beyond that as corporate social
responsibility has a tendency to focus on the parties that can potentially be affected by the decisions of
the firm, inadvertently ignoring minor parties, while Critical Accounting Theory wants to put the
focus on society as a whole. In his research, Laughlin (1987) states that there are three relevant points
of the critical theory for accounting research. Firstly, the critical accounting theory creates a link
between theory and practice. Secondly, critique, change and

Astronomy Description
Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are... The common lullaby that is known by many,
but what do these words really mean? After visiting the observatory, one could learned more about the
words and the concepts found in the common nursery rhythm. During my visit to the observatory, I
was able to learn more about stars, constellations, and asterisms in different parts of the sky, the
second largest telescope at the University of Northern Iowa, and Saturn, the 2nd largest planet in our
Solar System. I attended the observatory on September 3, 2015 from 9:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m.
September 3rd, was a hot and humid evening, with little to no wind. That night, there was slight
cloudiness in the Southern sky. The slight cloudiness in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the North East we saw. Cassiopeia. Similar to Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. Cassiopeia is a
circumpolar star in Cedar Falls. A Circumpolar star, is a star that will never set in a specific location
due to its proximity to the celestial pole. When looking at Cassiopeia she looks like a house. A square
base, with a triangle on top. Saturn was located in the South Western Sky. When looking at Saturn
with my own eyes, I could easily confuse it with Arcturus in the Western Sky. With the naked eye they
look about the same size, and brightness, and there is only one small difference. When looking at the
star and the planet, everyone should notice one twinkles, and the other is a constant stream of light.
The one that is twinkle is Arcturus. As the common lullaby states, stars twinkle. The telescope used on
September 3rd, contains a lenses twelve inches in circumference, which makes it the second largest at
the University of Northern Iowa s campus. To determine the quality of a telescope, you measure the
circumference of the lenses, and not the length. The wider the circumference of a telescope allows
more light to enter, which allows a better quality of picture. This particular telescope can magnify by
seventy five. This lens was bought by the University of Northern Iowa twenty years ago for $5,000. It
uses a computer system to track the stars and galaxies with the information about the date, time, and

Roman Values In William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar
In William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar, great emphasis is placed on what it means to be a good
Roman. Honour, honesty, service, and dignity were among the qualities considered virtuous and which
contributed to a sense of Roman duty. Along with the virtues, Shakespeare also seems to examine the
nature of philosophical Stoicism. The treatment of constancy and Stoicism has many thematic and
moral implications in Julius Caesar. In analysing Brutus supposedly noble character, Shakespeare calls
into question Stoicism s place as a guide for human conduct. Roman values and their importance to
the state play a central role in Julius Caesar. These values are portrayed as integral to the success of
Rome, because the majority of these virtues act in favour of the state. Each person in Roman society
has their own role which is part of a more important collective whole. Characters in the play seem to
identify more with being a citizen or soul of Rome rather than a unique individual (Shakespeare,
2.1.323). The play emphasizes Rome as an alien society and analyses the relationship between Rome
and the Romans, who see themselves as citizens, rather than men (Miles, 2). Shakespeare emphasizes
the importance of the state over personal thoughts or feelings: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I
loved Rome more (Shakespeare, 3.2.21 22). Each of the Roman virtues arises out of a sense of duty to
put the state over the self. Following this duty evokes a necessary recognition of

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Selective Breeding
Selective breeding is the process by which humans reproduce other animals and plants of special
features. Typically, strains that are selectively bred are domesticated, and livestock is normally done
by a professional breeder, Livestock animals are known as races, while high plants are known as the
varieties cultigens, or cultivars. The offspring of two purebred animals, but of different races is called
a crossover, and hybrid plants are called hybrids.[1]
There are two approaches or types of artificial selection or selective breeding, The first is the approach
of the breeder in which the traditional breeder or experimenter applies a known quantity of the

Baruch Kotter Quotes
1. Key Speech/Thought expressed by main character the conveys the theme Yes, the old game of
deducting ethnicity; in this they were all participants, experts. (Bezmozgis, 8) This quote shows us the
idea of judging people just because of their ethnicities. Everyone is a part of this game being judged
but, also judging. In this book, Baruch Kotler is a Jew from Russia, he is a minority and gets judged
for being different. This relates to the theme, individual vs society because Kotler s beliefs are
different from the general population and therefore he gets judged for that. 2. Key Character Trait that
relates to the theme. Call it curiosity. Call it instinct. And I am a man who has followed his instincts.
(Bezmozgis, 18) Kotler is a 60 year old man with a dark past. He lived his live being curious and
following his instincts but, his curiosity and instincts got him locked up. He was a soviet politician
who actively challenged policies because of his curiosity. Now, he is an Israeli politician who is
disgraced. This relates to the theme because, being curious means you are being different and in this
case, Kotler has different opinions about topics than the general populous, which makes him a
disgrace to society. 3. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Battle Of The Mountain Warfare
There is a nice sound to the phrase mountain warfare. It has a ring of daring; it sounds much cleaner
than trench warfare and lighter than tank warfare. The only thing that can match it is war in the air,
and that has become too deadly to be nice any more. It has also become too familiar, while war in the
mountains is still strange enough to sound romantic. Except, of course, to the men who have to fight
it. Walter Bernstein, Italy, January 1944 (1)
With a thud, the Allied attempt to sweep Hitler s feet out from underneath him crashed into the
fortified Apennine Mountains of Italy. The slow moving campaign in Italy had lost all its momentum,
hitting the brick wall that the Apennines were. Garrisoned peaks swarming with Nazi soldiers deterred
any attacks. The Americans were unable to pass these natural fortresses. A foot attack in the light of
day would be easily seen and mowed down by machine gun fire, an attack by armored vehicles would
be too loud and alert the Germans, and an attack under the shade of night would be impossible and
dangerous with foot soldiers or machinery. The Nazi troops would not fall to any conventional troops
or weapons. Something revolutionary, new, and different would need to be used to send the Germans
running. The United States Tenth Mountain Division, brand new and untested, would be the ones
called upon to complete this task. The Tenth Mountain soldiers, or more fondly, the ski troops, were
sent into Northern Italy. They, using

Electronic Devices Are Fragile And Contain Important Data
Final Project. Because electronic devices are fragile and contain important data, it is important to
respect the following procedure when handling them and preparing them for lab observation: 1 I must
first follow the right procedure before proceeding to the packaging which is to properly document the
USB disk by taking pictures to verify or enforce its authenticity, then I ll have to label it properly
which is another way to authenticate it later on, if I need someone else to retrieve it at the lab, or for
easy reconfiguration. Let s not forget the imaging of biological evidence (like hair, tissue, blood, teeth,
etc.) before it gets further analyzed. 2 The packaging can then be done in antistatic packaging, like
paper bags, envelopes, cardboard boxes, or antistatic containers for the fact that they reduce the
production of humidity or static electricity. Since we are dealing with a small device we will use an
envelope for packaging. Furthermore, the packaging should be done in a way that the item will not
bend or be deformed. 3 The last step should be to label the package with my name, date of packaging,
name of item followed by a small description (for instance, white and blue USB flash disk) and
reference pertaining to the case ( for instance, MR Yourprop E0012) * I would ask the lab to look at
possible damage or scratches on the device. This is to see if it has been tampered with (it could have

aways from this program that I feel can be utilized in any career path include the knowledge I gained
on how to conduct and present action research, the writing skillset I developed which aided me in
becoming a better writer, and the training I received on how to be an effective leader. At the beginning

from conducting an action research project in a group versus completing a project alone. During our
program we learned about allowing for different formats during assessment or classroom activities.
Therefore, I believe that some students may have preferred working with a group on such a significant
project. The fact that students would be allowed to work with people from different backgrounds and
with different personality types to complete a project would equate with real world experience. The
opportunity to work with people is why the practicum is such a valuable experience. However, one
cannot carefully evaluate the practicum for this program without a brief discussion about mentors. The
mentor I chose for this program was approachable and generous with her time and knowledge. I felt
comfortable enough to ask questions or admit mistakes in order to learn. At the onset of the practicum
my mentor was just my boss. At the end of the practicum I esteemed her as a colleague and friend. I

Men constantly surround Captain Miller; this suggests his importance and the fact that he is a figure of
authority. Without this entourage of soldiers beside him we would probably not even notice his
superiority amongst the ranks.
At the very beginning of the film when we see the aged Private Ryan making his way towards the
grave of Captain Miller he is walking about three metres ahead of the rest of his family, this shows the
way the war and thinking about the war has made him distant. It is clearly a long time after the war
has finished the fact that he still seems that he doesn t want to walk with his family and share the
experience shows how the gruesome war has shaped him into a possibly despondent person.
Janusz Kaminski, who was the lead camera man on the recording of Saving Private Ryan, through
various techniques and camera angles, helps to make the opening battle scene to Saving Private Ryan
both shocking and realistic. On the boats as they are approaching Omaha Beach, the camera is zoomed

Phishing Is A Social Engineering Luring Technique
Phishing is a social engineering luring technique, in which an attacker aims to steal sensitive
information such as credit card information and online banking passwords from users. Phishing is
carried over electronic communications such as email or instant messaging. In this technique, a replica
of the legitimate sites is created, and the users are directed to the Phishing pages where it s required
for the personal information.
As phishing remains a significant criminal activity that causes great loss of money and personal data.
In respond to these threats, a variety of Anti Phishing tools was released by software vendors and
companies. The Phishing detection technique used by industries mainly includes attack tracing, report
generating filtering, analysing, authentication, report making and network law enforcement. The
toolbars like spoof guard, trust watch, spoof stick and Net craft are some of the most popular Anti
Phishing toolbars services that are used. The W3C has set some standards that are followed by most of
the legit websites, but the phishing site may not develop these standards. There are certain
characteristics of URL and source code of the Phishing site based on which we can guess the fake site.

Canonization
The Catholic Christians belief on Canonization and the Scripture writings have a difference according
to Paul and the letters he wrote. Canonization is a process that is used by the churches to name Saints,
the churches have utilized this since the nineteenth century. This has been done over and over for
several years. It began with the early church, first martyrs then the public claim did the choosing of
these saints; however, this way was thought to be democratic despite the information being distorted

people were thought to be powerful and with a direct connection with God. However, the controversy

Similarities Between John Proctor And The Crucible
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in order to show the similarities between the Salem Witch Trials and
The Second Red Scare, which happened from 1947 through 1957. The Salem Witch Trials occurred
from February 1692 to March 1632, a full year of prosecutions and hearings caused by the accusations
of witchcraft. Similarly, the Second Red Scare befell as a time of continuous imputations of
communism. Presumably, Miller relates to the tragic hero in his play. Arthur Miller, like John Proctor,
faced some social problems. Some accused Miller of sympathizing with communist and he
consequently became blacklisted. Ultimately, John Proctor and Arthur Miller are both slightly rejected

Now the question is why the politicians are interested in ripping the article 370 from Kashmir why
innocent people are being killed on a daily basis as if they have any sales target (KILLING PEOPLE)

The entire world is of the opinion today that the best solution to the problem of Kashmir is to allow

2008 Juvenile Crime
According to the National Criminal Justice Reference Service article Juvenile Arrests
2008 on the bulletin by Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), juvenile
crime in 2008 showed a decline from recent years. Crime data is gathered annually and reported to the
FBI s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by local law enforcement agencies across the nation
and 2008 marked the first decline in juvenile crime since 2004.
Juvenile crime is defined as crime committed by persons under the age of 18. Although juvenile crime
in 2008 had increased in a few categories such as property crime it had decreased in most.
Criminal offenses are categorized under violent crime index (murder, manslaughter, forcible rape,
robbery, aggravated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the article, juvenile arrests in 2008 disproportionally involved more minorities than
whites. Data of 2008 indicated that 52% of juvenile violent crime index arrests and 33% of juvenile
property crime index arrests involved black youth even though they only make 16% of the youth
population ages 10 17 in the U.S. 47% of the same crime index involved white youth which makes up
78% of the U.S. population ages 10 17. Hispanic youth was included under white racial group.
Keeping track of crime through the FBI s UCR Program can be an effective tool to measure trends in
juvenile crime and reduce delinquency among our youth. For instance, data gathered can help law
enforcement agencies allocated funds to programs aimed to curtail rising crime in certain areas and
hire more staff where it s needed. On the flipside, the same data can help law enforcement agencies
notice what programs or what is not working in the fight against juvenile delinquency. Also, the same
data can also help address social issues such as the juvenile arrests disproportionately involved

Bio Finch Lab Report
The objective of this lab was to observe how competition works in an actual environment, and how it
contributes as a selecting agent towards processes such as natural selection. In order to examine how
these processes worked, people in the class were assigned a variety of different beaks for each of the
finches , or students. These beaks included chopsticks, binder clips, clothespins, pliers, and tweezers.
This created variation with the many different types of beaks that were available. All of the finches
started off with the same habitat, which was an island with small seeds. For this experiment, the
clothespin was assigned. Before beginning the lab, predictions were made based on the tools that were
provided. It was predicted that the chopsticks would be the least successful tool, due to its difficulty in
using it, and the high probability that the food would easily slip from the chopsticks. On the other
hand, the tweezers were predicted as the most successful tool, due to its ease of use, the pointed tip,
and the surface area that made it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When going over the results, tweezers and pliers were shown to have the best adaptation for both large
and small seeds. Clothespins were rated as being able to feed on large seeds, and chopsticks and
binder clips were labeled as inefficient in surviving in any of the environments, regardless of the seed
size. Therefore, the prediction from before was correct that chopsticks would be a difficult tool to use,
and tweezers did end up being one of the most successful beaks. From this experiment, this also
proved how the process of natural selection works, which was represented by the finches that adapted
the best to their environments (the beak that was best fitted for picking up the seeds). These species
that survived would later reproduce, and the useful traits would be passed down. This lab clearly
proved how natural processes have worked with actual species in nature in the real

Deriving Meaning from William Carlos Williams , The Young Housewife
Everything depends on perspective. The uniqueness we bring to our reading is essential to the
absorption of poems with Imagist elements. An example of this is the poem, The Young Housewife ,
by William Carlos Williams.
Perhaps it was a streak of laziness on my part, but I had very little imagination to offer this poem.
Having had no experience as such, I didn t identify with the young housewife, the fish man, the ice
man, or even the dramatically fallen leaf. What I initially saw was a jumble of thoughts arranged
neatly into three very brief verses.

unfair, but my right, seeing as it is my imagination that fuels the meaning here. From there, the little
details led me to my individual conclusion that this is a poem of oppression and obsession, cliché
though they may be.
My conclusions were drawn from the very fact that although the speaker in the poem initially seems to
be a random passer by, it is obvious that he knows intimate details about the young housewife. The
lines of the poem tell us that he knows that she is married and of the negligee that she wears (lines 1
2). It is also curious that he should refer to the specific times of her regular routines (line 1). In my
mind, few people would know such things about people and feel them worthy to comment on.
Someone who would certainly know and care about these things is the only other character directly
mentioned in the poem, her husband. Once I had realized that it could be his voice speaking, the
meaning in my mind became a lot clearer.
Here is the husband of a young bride. He is described as sitting solitary in a car with noiseless, and
perhaps unmoving, wheels, watching her every move (lines 4 10). Enter obsession. The description he
affords his wife is one of childishness. He speaks of

Tatro V. Minnesota Case Study
Tatro v. University of Minnesota refers to a case of the University of Minnesota bringing disciplinary
action against a student for several Facebook posts. In 2009, Amanda Tatro was a junior at the
University of Minnesota, enrolled in the mortuary science program taking a class with a lab working
with cadavers. Since Tatro was working in a cadaver lab through the Anatomy Bequest Program, she
had to sign a discloser form acknowledging that she understood and agreed to comply with the
program rules, as well as additional laboratory policies stated in the course syllabus. Additional
laboratory policies being, the course syllabus for the anatomy lab included rules set up to promote
respect for the cadaver. The anatomy lab rules allowed respectful and discreet conversational language
of cadaver dissection outside the laboratory, but prohibited blogging about the anatomy lab or cadaver
dissection (Tatro v. University of Minnesota, 2012). Later, in December 2009, Tatro would make

Case Study of Does America really need manufacturing .
Sriharsha Vennelaganti Fs0792
1. Summary:
In the case study we can see that the authors talk about the importance of innovation when it comes to
the long term success of every product company. By reading the article one gets an understanding that
the authors are asking executives of any product company should not view manufacturing as a cost
center and by shifting their manufacturing units offshore they are hindering a company s capacity to
innovate. In the end the authors give us different methods that a company can use to better improve
their product line without shifting their manufacturing bases offshore and a way the government can

To be successful many large scale manufacturing operations must find a keen balance that addresses
the more task focused needs of the production process as well as the financial planning, oversight and
control requirements of any major modern business organization. As I have mentioned couple of
points in the above section, but here in this critique I will be talking about how sourcing can help a
company to make a decision regarding keeping its manufacturing unit in United states. Modularity
plays an important role in sourcing as we can see from the article, where modularity in product design
can be seen as a way to new product development. Modularity in process design may speed new
product manufacturing setup times, reduce costs, and enhance the profitability of the lower product
volumes. Modular products tend to have fewer components for assembly and are therefore cheaper to
assemble. Modules are created with some aspects of production in mind, however this modularization
is done without understanding the implications of design. Although often yielding highly functional
products, once the manufacturing process is over this unstructured modularization often leads to costly
redesigns or expensive products. Modularity requires maintaining independence between components
and processes in different modules, encouraging

Should English Be The Official Language Essay
Theodore Roosevelt once started The ultimate way to bring this nation to ruin, preventing all
possibility of it continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling
nationalities. We have but one flag; we must also learn one language, and that language is English.
Indeed, in the United States, English should be the official language because we need a strong central
language to unite all citizen, and it will help immigrants connect and succeed in America. Language

A Brief Note On The And Licensed Contractors
In August of 2014, Hurricane Iselle hit the Island of Hawaii, where I live. She was violent and mean
as she swept across our shores. In her wake, our electricity and telephone lines went down. I wondered
for weeks as the telephone and electricity repair crew worked 24 hours, seven days a week trying to
restore service to all of us in need. Despite the drawbacks of broken power lines, fallen trees, and no
water, I felt confident that those repairing the lines were certified electricians and licensed contractors.
Our lives today are filled with a vast number of products with some kind of implanted computer part

Remember the IBM Selecta, manual calculators, and books that you can check out at the library to

being, we have evolved as a technological dependent society. It was like a storm that swept over the

Theme Of Secrets In Sense And Sensibility
The Role of Secrecy in Sense and Sensibility A novel full of secrets, Sense and Sensibility, allows the
opportunity to explore the use of the secret as a literary tool. Austen creatively uses secrets and their
strategically timed revelation to achieve greater, overarching goals in the novel. In Sense and
Sensibility secrets are used to establish internal and external conflict, create situations of dramatic
irony, and contribute to plot development. Many of the secrets in Sense and Sensibility allowed Jane
Austen to establish both internal and external conflict throughout the novel. The secret of Edward
Ferrars and Lucy Steele s engagement leads to external conflict between Edward and his family.
Edward is disowned by his mother, brother, and sister for being secretly engaged with Lucy and
refusing to break the engagement (Austen 251). This secret also creates considerable internal conflict
and turmoil for Elinor Dashwood. At the beginning of the novel, she only has sense and is not
considered sensible. However, when Lucy Steele reveals the secret engagement to Elinor, her sense
begins to struggle with the sensibility that she has not yet expressed. Her inner ... Show more content

Leadership Styles From The Point Of View
Comparative Analysis
The articles under analysis explore leadership styles from the point of view of their relation to gender
(Merchant, 2012) and personality (Yahaya et al., 2011). Merchant (2012) provides a valuable research,
which is focused on gender as the major determinant of leadership styles in individuals. Providing an
analysis of literature, Merchant (2012) indicates that many studies analyzing the intersection of gender
and influence tactics have resulted in mixed finding (p. 24). It proves the argument that gender
stereotypes play a major role in attributing particular roles for females and males on the basis of their
biological sex and what is expected of them. Whereas Merchant (2012) does not present a particular

I happened to work under both female and male leadership, and I should admit that the difference
between them is not evident everything depends on personality, and dissimilarities in influence tactics
are attributed to situational circumstances such as individual setting (Merchant, 2012, p. 26).
Personal Leadership Style
My leadership style is both Participative and Democratic, and it is influenced by the three variables
gender, personality, and age. Democratic Leader makes the final decision, only after receiving the
input and recommendations of all team members, (Goetsch, 2002). I focus on getting to the bottom of
the problem with working through it.
Effect of Gender
Though gender is a contradictory variable in affecting leadership styles, I should note that gender does
play an important role in the way I influence other people. In this aspect, I should agree with Merchant
(2012), who indicate, women value cooperation [...] and have a less clear focus on where the
boundaries of their friendships end and their individual identities begin (p. 18). As a female, I feel I
have to work harder than a male doing the same job. Even though, I feel that I have to work harder
than a man, I also think that it s not always about your gender, but how a person is a leader. Kanter,
argues that males and females who occupy the same organizational role theoretically differ very

Should Undergraduates Specialize Summary
In Should Undergraduates Specialize? Patrick Allitt contrasts his experience at the University of
Oxford in England with that of his daughter Frances at Emory University in America, questioning the
need for a well rounded college education rather than a highly focused one. Despite his conclusion
that a one size fits all approach does not work in education, his patronizing tone and contradictory
arguments suggest he does believe that; he simply disagrees with the approach America is taking.
Additionally, while basing criticism of higher education in America on one anecdotal account from
another country over thirty years ago has nostalgic value, it does little to promote solutions to
problems he touches on.
One of the biggest flaws in Allitt s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his introductory anecdote, the author notes that his parents paid roughly $400 for his entire three
years at Oxford. On the other hand, a student at Emory, where he has taught since 1988, can expect to
pay over $150,000. Clearly, inflation is a factor; however, today, that $400 would be equivalent to a
few thousand dollars, far outside the six digit tuition students like his daughter face. For this reason,
his argument for streamlined education that focuses on the field the student wants to pursue makes
sense. If tailored education could lower the cost and amount of time an individual spends pursuing his
degree, college would be attainable for a larger number of people. Unfortunately, many young adults
do not enter college with a single career pinpointed. The well rounded approach may be wasteful for
the student who knows she wants to work in the culinary arts, whereas a variety of classes may help
the undecided student find direction. While Allitt does acknowledge that possibility, he does not offer
any suggestions to counter it. When the majority of American graduates leave school facing $30,000
in debt, certainty that they pursued the right career is

The American Dream and Death of a Salesman Essay
The American Dream is one of the most sought after things in the United States, even though it is
rarely, if ever, achieved. According to historian Matthew Warshauer, the vision of the American Dream
has changed dramatically over time. In his 2003 essay Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Changing
Conceptions of the American Dream , Warshauer claims that the American Dream had gone from
becoming wealthy by working hard and earning money, to getting rich quickly and easily. He
attributes this change to television game shows, state lotteries, and compensation lawsuits. He also
argues that most Americans are more concerned with easy money than hard earned money, and that

This shows Willy s and Biff s obsession with material goods and consumer products, just as
Warshauer claims. In addition, in Warshauer s essay, he observes that rather than adhering to a
traditional work ethic, far too many Americans are pinning their hopes on easy money . The characters
of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff, prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills himself in a
car crash in order to get insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff will use that
money to start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and make money, he
kills himself to get some easy money for his family. Also, Happy and Biff plan on becoming
successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff dropped out of high school after failing math, and
Happy works as an assistant to an assistant in a department store, where he makes very little money.
Although Biff acknowledges his failure, Happy acts as if he had the greatest job ever. He seems to be
blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be interested in girls than actually
trying to improve his position. Both Happy and Biff seem to expect success to come to them, hoping
to make easy money . Warshauer also comments that in a society dedicated to capitalism ... the ability
to buy a big house and a nice car separates those who are considered successful from those who are
not . This is shown to be true in Death of a Salesman,

On her knees deals with themes such as family, pride and self respect. The most important part of the
story is when the narrator Victor, is advising her mother not to return to her place of work as the latter
was accused of having stolen a pair of earrings in the house she works as a servant to make ends meet.
At this point, the story has reached an important situation which will be discussed in this essay with
close reference to the mother son relationship. On her knees reflects the reality of life where one has to
struggle and where those who work for honesty always face trouble.
This highlights the realistic atmosphere prevailing as well as reflects the true meaning of relationship.
The readers are exposed to the mother son relationship. It can be seen that even if the narrator is a
twenty year old law student, he is still the little boy who needed his neck scrubbed from the point of
view of the mother. Whatever good advice the son gives, it is not followed and instead he is given a
lecture. This is a typical mother son relationship which shows that no matter how much a child grows,
he always remains a little kid for the mother. Moreover, the readers also notice the routine life of the
narrator and his mother. The boy used to accompany his mother to work and help her which makes a
four hour job becomes two. There is solidarity, strong family bond and understanding between them

Some products would not be sold in Jessops but would be sold online resulting in losses of potential

to social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook people don t need to share their photos in a
physical format and are capable of simply sending the picture via these social websites. In this case of

who thrive off increased internet usage due to consumers finding it a cheaper alternative to Jessops.
The internet can also be a good source of primary market research which enables firms such as
Amazon to analyze prices of different websites. This would give the opportunity for Amazon to

entirely up to the company, this kind of competition would perhaps not effect Amazon due to their size
in the market and their reliability where customers instantly visit Amazon knowing they will be given
a fair price and receive their purchased item quickly. However, it did affect Jessops who failed to
respond to demand and lower prices resulting in there imminent administration. I don t believe that the

This artillery bombardment had helped Canada develop a successful way to defeat Germany. As a

The focus of the painting is based on the two soldiers passing the shell to each other and then into to
the artillery to shoot against the German army. The gesture of working together in harsh realities
carries the message of unity and self sacrifice for the war. One soldier does not have his uniform on
meaning no protective gear that characterizes unselfishness in the center of a great battle.
Furthermore, there is a soldier, who has an injury on his hand, yet still continuing to fight. The wound
shows contribution in the face of danger and heroism marked by the bandaged arm on his return to the
conflict. It sets an example of selflessness and bravery and the artist shows that in war, sacrifice can be
represented by their schedule of duty.

  • 2. The Sword And Shield Metaphor Audience Driven, Comedian Approved Richard Pryor once said, There s a thin line between to laugh with and to laugh at (A Z Quotes). Leon Rappoport, a professor at Kansas State University, believed in the same thin line as Pryor. Rappoport received his BA and MS at New York University, and completed his PhD in 1963 at the University of Colorado(Kansas State University). He studied psychological sciences, and concentrated his studies in decision making and human judgment, even writing a book called Punchlines: The Case for Racial, Ethnic, and Gender Humor (Kansas State University). In another book, The Sword and Shield Metaphor and Other Perspectives, Rappoport claims that humor depends on how the audience receives humor. The audience can either be on the side of the audience that is getting laughed at, or they can be on the side of the audience that is laughing with other people. In the sword and shield metaphor the audience faces two contrasting sides that deal with stereotype humor. The first side is the sword. The sword represents a weapon designed to mock and insult minority groups. The second side is the shield, which can be represented to serve the interests of minority groups. The shield side of the metaphor can be used in an effective way by minorities as a way to claim pride in their identity. Together, these two sides can either offend a group, or make them laugh. For example, Rappoport includes a joke to further prove that a joke can be offensive, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Versailles Treaty Dbq How did the Versailles Treaty help cause WWII? The Versailles Treaty was created in order to prevent any further wars from happening such as the calamity that was WWI, however could it be the very reason the Germans felt they needed to strike back at their enemies and cause an even greater calamity than the first World War known as WWII? After the first world war, the Versailles Treaty was created by the nations that won the first world war. Although it was majorly created by the delegates of the 3 biggest powers: Premier George Clemenceau of France, Prime Minister David Prime Lloyd of Britain, and President Woodrow Wilson of the U.S. It consisted of terms that Germany had to abide by after they were forced to sign it after being ignored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Document A discusses this by showing a map of what the geography of Germany had been after the Versailles Treaty terms, with Alsace and Lorraine, their main production of coal, now in possession of France. To put it another way, the process of Germany being stripped of some its land through the Versailles Treaty s terms had provided an opportunity for the Germans to initiate war in order to regain their land and resources back, along with power. However, this is not the only instance of this, another document validates that the Versailles Treaty had helped cause WWII through its unjust terms. That document would be the famous book created by Adolf Hitler himself, Mein Kampf . In this segment of the book, it can be paraphrased that Hitler feels Germany is naive for believing that the Versailles Treaty will solve the conflicts between all of Europe, instead he recommends that Germany goes to war in order to destroy the unjust terms that oppress them because the restoration of Germany can only be achieved through blood. In other words, Hitler is saying that Germany needs to fight in order to rid themselves of the restrictions imposed by the Versailles Treaty because any peaceful means are flawed. Consequently, it can be inferred that because of the Versailles Treaty, it allowed Hitler to persuade Germany to fight to made the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty void all the more easy and because of this Germany becomes more of a threat thus making the nations ally and fight creating ... This event really shook up NASA, both good and bad. The following days, tons of ground reports were done, looking for the debris of the spacecraft. They also analyzed the footage and other reports of the shuttle. This is what happened after the Columbia disaster; so that begs the question, what s the full story of the Columbia disaster? On January 16th, 2003, the spacecraft named Columbia was launched on this day and this is where the story begins. The Columbia was the first ever spaceship to reach into space in 1981; and unfortunately, this would be its 28th and final journey (Dooling, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They could ve had the Columbia wait till the 15th and had the following planned spacecraft, the Atlantis, could ve moved up its launch to the 10th, leaving a small window for repairs or for them to get off the Atlantis ( Columbia disaster ). • 5. Conctionalism In The Theory Of The Critical Accounting Theory Critical Accounting Theory According to Oluwadare and Samy (2015) from the Canadian Social Science, Critical Accounting Theory is about understanding accounting in the context of its broad socio politics, evaluating the accounting policies and practices that exist, and offering means of working towards more enabling accountings. It generally puts a focus on accounting s role to keep those in control of particular resources in their positions while those without any capital to have their voices undermined or restricted. Critical theory advances beyond the rational view of the traditional functionalist in terms of accounting and accounting research. It aims to help in the disclosure of the accountability of organisations as well as increasing the environmental stability. This is theory is contextual, meaning it focuses more on political, economic and social consequences (Laughlin, 1999). It could be said that it is similar to corporate social responsibility, but it is actually beyond that as corporate social responsibility has a tendency to focus on the parties that can potentially be affected by the decisions of the firm, inadvertently ignoring minor parties, while Critical Accounting Theory wants to put the focus on society as a whole. • 7. Roman Values In William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar In William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar, great emphasis is placed on what it means to be a good Roman. Honour, honesty, service, and dignity were among the qualities considered virtuous and which contributed to a sense of Roman duty. Along with the virtues, Shakespeare also seems to examine the nature of philosophical Stoicism. The treatment of constancy and Stoicism has many thematic and moral implications in Julius Caesar. In analysing Brutus supposedly noble character, Shakespeare calls into question Stoicism s place as a guide for human conduct. Roman values and their importance to the state play a central role in Julius Caesar. These values are portrayed as integral to the success of Rome, because the majority of these virtues act in favour of the state. Each person in Roman society has their own role which is part of a more important collective whole. Characters in the play seem to identify more with being a citizen or soul of Rome rather than a unique individual (Shakespeare, 2.1.323). The play emphasizes Rome as an alien society and analyses the relationship between Rome and the Romans, who see themselves as citizens, rather than men (Miles, 2). Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of the state over personal thoughts or feelings: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more (Shakespeare, 3.2.21 22). Each of the Roman virtues arises out of a sense of duty to put the state over the self. Following this duty evokes a necessary recognition of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Battle Of The Mountain Warfare There is a nice sound to the phrase mountain warfare. It has a ring of daring; it sounds much cleaner than trench warfare and lighter than tank warfare. The only thing that can match it is war in the air, and that has become too deadly to be nice any more. It has also become too familiar, while war in the mountains is still strange enough to sound romantic. Except, of course, to the men who have to fight it. Walter Bernstein, Italy, January 1944 (1) With a thud, the Allied attempt to sweep Hitler s feet out from underneath him crashed into the fortified Apennine Mountains of Italy. The slow moving campaign in Italy had lost all its momentum, hitting the brick wall that the Apennines were. Garrisoned peaks swarming with Nazi soldiers deterred any attacks. The Americans were unable to pass these natural fortresses. A foot attack in the light of day would be easily seen and mowed down by machine gun fire, an attack by armored vehicles would be too loud and alert the Germans, and an attack under the shade of night would be impossible and dangerous with foot soldiers or machinery. The Nazi troops would not fall to any conventional troops or weapons. Something revolutionary, new, and different would need to be used to send the Germans running. Because electronic devices are fragile and contain important data, it is important to respect the following procedure when handling them and preparing them for lab observation: 1 I must first follow the right procedure before proceeding to the packaging which is to properly document the USB disk by taking pictures to verify or enforce its authenticity, then I ll have to label it properly which is another way to authenticate it later on, if I need someone else to retrieve it at the lab, or for easy reconfiguration. Let s not forget the imaging of biological evidence (like hair, tissue, blood, teeth, etc.) before it gets further analyzed. 2 The packaging can then be done in antistatic packaging, like paper bags, envelopes, cardboard boxes, or antistatic containers for the fact that they reduce the production of humidity or static electricity. Since we are dealing with a small device we will use an envelope for packaging. Furthermore, the packaging should be done in a way that the item will not bend or be deformed. 3 The last step should be to label the package with my name, date of packaging, name of item followed by a small description (for instance, white and blue USB flash disk) and reference pertaining to the case ( for instance, MR Yourprop E0012) * I would ask the lab to look at possible damage or scratches on the device. Bio Finch Lab Report The objective of this lab was to observe how competition works in an actual environment, and how it contributes as a selecting agent towards processes such as natural selection. In order to examine how these processes worked, people in the class were assigned a variety of different beaks for each of the finches , or students. These beaks included chopsticks, binder clips, clothespins, pliers, and tweezers. This created variation with the many different types of beaks that were available. All of the finches started off with the same habitat, which was an island with small seeds. For this experiment, the clothespin was assigned. Before beginning the lab, predictions were made based on the tools that were provided. It was predicted that the chopsticks would be the least successful tool, due to its difficulty in using it, and the high probability that the food would easily slip from the chopsticks. Therefore, the prediction from before was correct that chopsticks would be a difficult tool to use, and tweezers did end up being one of the most successful beaks. From this experiment, this also proved how the process of natural selection works, which was represented by the finches that adapted the best to their environments (the beak that was best fitted for picking up the seeds). My conclusions were drawn from the very fact that although the speaker in the poem initially seems to be a random passer by, it is obvious that he knows intimate details about the young housewife. The lines of the poem tell us that he knows that she is married and of the negligee that she wears (lines 1 2). It is also curious that he should refer to the specific times of her regular routines (line 1). In my mind, few people would know such things about people and feel them worthy to comment on. Someone who would certainly know and care about these things is the only other character directly mentioned in the poem, her husband. Once I had realized that it could be his voice speaking, the meaning in my mind became a lot clearer. Here is the husband of a young bride. Modularity plays an important role in sourcing as we can see from the article, where modularity in product design can be seen as a way to new product development. Modularity in process design may speed new product manufacturing setup times, reduce costs, and enhance the profitability of the lower product volumes. Modular products tend to have fewer components for assembly and are therefore cheaper to assemble. Modules are created with some aspects of production in mind, however this modularization is done without understanding the implications of design. Although often yielding highly functional products, once the manufacturing process is over this unstructured modularization often leads to costly redesigns or expensive products. • 27. Theme Of Secrets In Sense And Sensibility The Role of Secrecy in Sense and Sensibility A novel full of secrets, Sense and Sensibility, allows the opportunity to explore the use of the secret as a literary tool. Austen creatively uses secrets and their strategically timed revelation to achieve greater, overarching goals in the novel. In Sense and Sensibility secrets are used to establish internal and external conflict, create situations of dramatic irony, and contribute to plot development. Many of the secrets in Sense and Sensibility allowed Jane Austen to establish both internal and external conflict throughout the novel. The secret of Edward Ferrars and Lucy Steele s engagement leads to external conflict between Edward and his family. Edward is disowned by his mother, brother, and sister for being secretly engaged with Lucy and refusing to break the engagement (Austen 251). This secret also creates considerable internal conflict and turmoil for Elinor Dashwood. At the beginning of the novel, she only has sense and is not considered sensible. However, when Lucy Steele reveals the secret engagement to Elinor, her sense begins to struggle with the sensibility that she has not yet expressed. Her inner ... • 28. Leadership Styles From The Point Of View Comparative Analysis The articles under analysis explore leadership styles from the point of view of their relation to gender (Merchant, 2012) and personality (Yahaya et al., 2011). Merchant (2012) provides a valuable research, which is focused on gender as the major determinant of leadership styles in individuals. Providing an analysis of literature, Merchant (2012) indicates that many studies analyzing the intersection of gender and influence tactics have resulted in mixed finding (p. 24). It proves the argument that gender stereotypes play a major role in attributing particular roles for females and males on the basis of their biological sex and what is expected of them. I happened to work under both female and male leadership, and I should admit that the difference between them is not evident everything depends on personality, and dissimilarities in influence tactics are attributed to situational circumstances such as individual setting (Merchant, 2012, p. 26). Personal Leadership Style My leadership style is both Participative and Democratic, and it is influenced by the three variables gender, personality, and age. Democratic Leader makes the final decision, only after receiving the input and recommendations of all team members, (Goetsch, 2002). I focus on getting to the bottom of the problem with working through it. Effect of Gender Though gender is a contradictory variable in affecting leadership styles, I should note that gender does play an important role in the way I influence other people. In this aspect, I should agree with Merchant (2012), who indicate, women value cooperation [...] and have a less clear focus on where the boundaries of their friendships end and their individual identities begin (p. 18). As a female, I feel I have to work harder than a male doing the same job. Even though, I feel that I have to work harder than a man, I also think that it s not always about your gender, but how a person is a leader. • 29. Should Undergraduates Specialize Summary In Should Undergraduates Specialize? Patrick Allitt contrasts his experience at the University of Oxford in England with that of his daughter Frances at Emory University in America, questioning the need for a well rounded college education rather than a highly focused one. Despite his conclusion that a one size fits all approach does not work in education, his patronizing tone and contradictory arguments suggest he does believe that; he simply disagrees with the approach America is taking. Additionally, while basing criticism of higher education in America on one anecdotal account from another country over thirty years ago has nostalgic value, it does little to promote solutions to problems he touches on. One of the biggest flaws in Allitt s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his introductory anecdote, the author notes that his parents paid roughly $400 for his entire three years at Oxford. On the other hand, a student at Emory, where he has taught since 1988, can expect to pay over $150,000. Clearly, inflation is a factor; however, today, that $400 would be equivalent to a few thousand dollars, far outside the six digit tuition students like his daughter face. For this reason, his argument for streamlined education that focuses on the field the student wants to pursue makes sense. If tailored education could lower the cost and amount of time an individual spends pursuing his degree, college would be attainable for a larger number of people. Unfortunately, many young adults do not enter college with a single career pinpointed. The well rounded approach may be wasteful for the student who knows she wants to work in the culinary arts, whereas a variety of classes may help the undecided student find direction. While Allitt does acknowledge that possibility, he does not offer any suggestions to counter it. When the majority of American graduates leave school facing $30,000 in debt, certainty that they pursued the right career is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to historian Matthew Warshauer, the vision of the American Dream has changed dramatically over time. In his 2003 essay Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Changing Conceptions of the American Dream , Warshauer claims that the American Dream had gone from becoming wealthy by working hard and earning money, to getting rich quickly and easily. He attributes this change to television game shows, state lotteries, and compensation lawsuits. The characters of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff, prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills himself in a car crash in order to get insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff will use that money to start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and make money, he kills himself to get some easy money for his family. Also, Happy and Biff plan on becoming successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff dropped out of high school after failing math, and Happy works as an assistant to an assistant in a department store, where he makes very little money. He seems to be blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be interested in girls than actually trying to improve his position. Both Happy and Biff seem to expect success to come to them, hoping to make easy money .
