The Parthenon Essay
The ancient Greek civilization contributed many great new ideas and aspects to everyday life that
shaped and inspired the modern day society. The Greeks are well known for their construction of
temples, acropolis and other grand architectural structures. Among these structures stood one of the
most famous, the Parthenon. The Parthenon was a symbol of Greek society and culture as it stood as
one of Greece s most important architectural buildings. Besides being the Athenians greatest
architectural achievement, the Parthenon serves a basic purpose. The Parthenon is a temple devoted to
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and guardian of the city state of Athens that got its name from
her. The temple marked the zenith of ancient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a cause of this relationship, the Parthenon plays a trick and strikes an illusion to the eye. Greek
architects Ictinus and Callicrates erected the temple atop the southern flank of the acropolis, the
central hill of the Greek city state which was used for defensive and religious purposes, then in
seventeen years, Ictinus and Callicrates completed the decorations of the Parthenon (Harper OL). The
Parthenon is made entirely of a marble from Mount Pentelicus called Pentelic marble and stands
approximately eighteen meters high. The selections made for the material of the Parthenon were
chosen with many points considered to ensure a strong and sturdy future. The Parthenon was
commissioned by Pericles sometime after Greek victories over the Persians between 490 and 480 BC
(Glancey 26, 27). During the Persian Greek wars, Athens believed that Athena watched over them and
that she helped them throughout the war. The Parthenon represents the wealth, power, society, and
culture of Athens. The building of the Parthenon cost the Athenians four hundred and sixty nine
talents, which symbolized Athens as wealthy.

Compare And Contrast Functionalist And Stylistics
Two different approaches in Stylistics: Formalist Vs Functionalist
Stylistics as a particular way of approaching the meaning that a society produces has many tools to
analyze writer s or author s style of their works. There are actually several different approaches toward
stylistics including formalist, mentalist, textlinguistic/functionalist, pragmatic, radical and empirical,
however this paper will only focus on comparing and contrasting two different approaches, those are
Formalist and Functionalist.
Comparing Formalist and Functionalist
Generally both of them are interested in finding the meaning of the text, but formalists look at the text
semantically, while functionalists concern with the text pragmatically.

Firth and M.A.K Halliday. Malinowski, 1923 (cited in Burke, 2014) works on the importance of
situational context. Functionalists also look at context as important thing in constructing meaning.
Context will influence how we interpret a text. However, context is put in the highest level of
interpreting meaning. And then, Firth with his work Personality in language and society (1950).
Halliday (1994) (cited in Burke, 2014) in his work An Introduction to Functional Grammar proposed
what we called as metafunctions . Halliday believed that in a particular language there must be
tripartite functions, namely Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual. Ideational or well known as
experiential meaning which has a representational function is used to encode any idea or experience of
the world; it conveys a picture of reality. Interpersonal function means we use it to encode interaction
to see the social relationships. And the last is Textual function of language is used to organize our
experiential, logical and interpersonal meanings into a linear and coherent whole and it provides the
formal properties of language. (Halliday, 2014). All these functions work simultaneously and they
have relation one another. However, it still can be analyzed

Island Biogeography Paper
The purpose of island biogeography is to help take a closer look at the speciation of animals on
mainland landscapes, and compare them to surrounding islands that separated from the mainland. In
this study, the focus is on avian birds and the differences in landscape make up that can influence
speciation. The differences can possibly lead to populations of different species settling apart from one
another, maybe leading to the extinction of one species and the thriving of another. Although island
geography has been a useful tool, it has also been questioned, leading to a new tool: countryside
biogeography. In Wolfe et al. (2015) it is explained how countryside geography is a tool that can be
used to look at different aspects of speciation in

Examples Of Market Segmentation Of Apple
A. Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning and Differentiation are marketing tools which help the
marketers differentiate, attract, retain and grow the customer base for their respective products.
Market segmentation is a process of segregating the market into different smaller groups. A market
comprises of large number of heterogeneous customer base with distinct tastes and preferences. A
marketer needs to classify and segment people into smaller homogeneous groups basis similar
characteristics, tastes, preferences, likes, etc. so that they will respond in a similar fashion to a
particular product launched for that segment. Thus, market segmentation can be defined as, the sub

Sociological View Of Religion
Praying is an important aspect of all religions as well as Christianity. To observe this specific religious
phenomenon, I went to the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. I attended to see one of their prayers. What
they were practicing was not an individual action. They were praying with other Christians not by
themselves. Also they were praying out loud. The Priest was saying the prayer and the others were
either repeating after him or saying Amen when he finished his prayer. After praying, most of the
Christians light up candles at specific part of the church. A famous sociologist Emile Durkheim
discusses about religion in the perspective of sociology in his book, The Elementary Forms of
Religious Life. He mentions in his book that society creates the religion to live with moral rules. Since
I observe the atmosphere of that holy place, I came up with several questions. What are the forces to
make them go to the Church and pray together? And how do they use the symbols to become a
motivated person?
In sociological perspective, Durkheim believes that in order to understand the community, one need to
understand the religion. In the church, people were praying all together. ... Show more content on

They share the bread, and that also reminds me they are a big family. When I asked them why they eat
and drink in a prayer place, they answered that they eat and drink because they think they are gifts
from Jesus. Religions, which have held so considerable a place in history, and to which, in all times,
men have to receive the energy which they must have to live, should be made up of a tissue of
illusions (Durkheim, 45). Eating bread and drinking wine are the symbols to receive the energy to
understand the importance of being community every members of this family. It can be explained with
this theory that eating or drinking here is not as the real meaning. They are objects to give energy,

How Did Liberalism Return To Paganism
Liberalism, a return to Paganism.
Modern liberalism is an infantile disorder that purveys freedom as living as you like. Apparently it
yields indiscriminate tolerance, which is encapsulated in the campus adage I m okay, you re okay , but
in reality its followers are intolerant to anything that opposes their worldview. If you probe deeper, it
is interesting how the ultimate essence of liberalism, like that of idol worship, is denial of the unity of
the world, hence unqualified pluralism.
Moreover, is it really a coincidence that Liberalism has embraced everything in paganism that all
earlier Abrahamic religions, and finally Islam had rejected the crass materialism, the cynicism, the
nihilism and fatalism, the hedonism? And is it also

nonprofit (making); are financially independent of government; and are actively engaged in the

Classic Car Investment Essay
In 2015 a 1978 Ferrari sold for more than $35.7 million(Sullivan). Whether you are a car enthusiast or
you just use cars to get back and forth from work this is an amazing number. A car that sold for more
than 20x its original MSRP. How does this happen? Classic car investing is becoming the new stock
market for the wealthy. Buying, storing, then selling cars for a profit sounds like a simple system, but
can you really make money investing in classic cars? Auctions are now being televised and we see
cars selling well over their original price tag. Even with these prices some of the sellers are winners
and others, losers. There has to be a proper strategy for success or the auctions would be pretty empty.

The Impact Of Viking Raids On The British Isles
Coming from Scandinavian countries, predominantly Denmark and Norway, the Vikings began
raiding the British Isles in the late 700s (James). The Vikings primarily targeted monasteries, because
that is where most of the wealth was concentrated (Loughrey). These raids were very violent, people
were killed, and the survivors were sold into slavery (Loughrey). These violent raids earned the
Vikings the reputation of barbarians, much like the Mongols a few centuries later in Asia. After some
time, once the Vikings exhausted most of the wealth in the monasteries, they turned their interest into
settling the British Isles (James). By the late 9th century the Vikings had conquered most of England
(James). However, even though these Viking kingdoms did not last very long, the Scandinavians who
resided there stayed. These Scandinavians would go on to change the British Isles in many ways.
Despite the violent and negative impacts of Viking raids on the British Isles, once the Vikings settled
down, they had a significant and positive peaceful impact on the British Isles culturally, politically,
and economically. The first of these positive impacts was on the culture of the British Isles. One of the
ways that the Vikings influenced the culture is evidenced by how they changed the English language.
Since Old Norse and Old English are very similar, it can be very hard to detect where Old Norse
coincides with modern English (Treharne 3). However, a very obvious influence is seen in the

Friedrich Nietzsche s The Antichrist
Despite the title, Friedrich Nietzsche s book The Antichrist is anything but contrary to the teachings of
Jesus Christ as best understood in the Synoptic Gospels. In fact, Nietzsche s project in this work, if I
do dare to interpret Nietzsche, is to reveal the complete silliness of ambiguous, vague, absolutely non
empirical concepts; specifically, concepts that create values . In fact, Nietzsche s purpose in writing
this book is to reveal those who have abused the transcendental in order to manipulate and control
those that are unable to understand, or wish not to understand, the improbability of such kinds of
divine revelation. In short, ever since the life if the man known as Jesus Christ, so called christians

Nietzsche claims that the Christian religion has, for a very long time, been used as a means to confuse
and dismiss reality. Instead, priests have been suggesting vague concepts such as judgement , salvation
, faith , sin , etc. in order to freely command whatever values they see fit. The priests, in Nietzsche s
view, have been using the transcendental and unfalsifiable realm of the religious in order to create
selfishly motivated lies for the gain of power. The poor masses have been following this bunch of lies
because that they are deceived in thinking that they will themselves gain more power by the way of
God offering equality and eternal life. However, in all actuality, the world is not equal and these
masses are being made to suffer an even greater deal than necessary for the sake of a filthy religious
lie. Nietzsche suggests that we, instead, abandon these lies and leave the will of God in the past for a
more happy future. Instead, Nietzsche offers, we can come to terms with reality and authentically seek
to fulfill our deepest desires; i.e. the natural values attributed to our psyche by the way of the process

History 1301
18 November 2017
The Adversity of a Southern Girl The history of slavery and how it intertwined with the politics of
slavery can be found in the story of a young slave name Celia. The historical narrative Celia, A Slave
was written in 1991 by the author Melton A. McLaurin. In the year of 1850, a Missouri farmer named
Robert Newsom buys a young female slave. She was only fourteen years old when she was purchased.
Right after the purchase of Celia, the pattern of sexual abuse from Newsom begin. This true story
gives the details of cruelty and execution of a young black female. Black female slaves were
essentially powerless in a slave society, unable to legally protect themselves from physical assaults of
either white or black males (113). McLaurin has written over twenty books. Some of his most highly
rated books include; The Knights of Labor in the South, The North Carolina State Fair, Growing up
White in the Segregated South for which he received the Lillian Smith Award and Celia, A Slave.
Author Melton McLaurin wrote this book for readers to know and understand a portion of the
American past. He explained how the sexual politics of slavery presented an exact example of the
power relationships within the larger society. In his writing, he demonstrates how ... Show more

degree to which the sexual exploitation of female slaves influenced the routine operations of the
institution of slavery, it can and does clearly define the issues that must be analyzed if such theory is

The Latin America Debt Crisis
The Latin America debt crisis
What Happened
Both internal and external for Latin Americas roller coaster economic performance in what was
known as the crisis. During the 50 s and 60 s there was favorable conditions in place to maintain
steady employment creation, capital investment and overall economic expansion. But this period
ended in 1973 amid the first world oil crisis rocked the world economy and caused an era of debt led
growth among the oil importing Latin America countries. Latin American countries were hit by a slow
down in economic growth. The import bill in these nations sky rocketed and exports saw a massive
slump as demand for Latin American products fell abruptly as the world economy slowed down.

The governments limited their costs by slashing social spending; education, health, social services,
etc.., devaluing the national currency via lowering export earnings and increasing import costs,
creating strict limits on food subsidies, cutting workers jobs and wages, taking over small subsistence
farms for large scale export crop farming and promoting the privatization of public industries. Most
countries suffered a recession and often depression; and the poorest of the poor were most affected. As
Latin America s economies stagnated, per capita income plummeted, poverty increased, and the
already wide gap between the rich and the poor widened further. The debt crisis seriously eroded
whatever gains had been made in reducing poverty through improved social welfare measures over the
booms of the 60 s and early 70 s. Poverty grew 50 percent; malnutrition 40 percent; children were
increasingly recruited into the drug trade and prostitution; long term unemployment and its adverse
social effects increased; the weakening of local communities and the growth of crime and an epidemic
of homicides, are but a few of the many dilemmas that the debt crisis caused.

Haskell Observes The Songs Of The Birds In The Forest...
On April 16th, Haskell observes the songs of the birds in the forest. The dry buzz unleashes a
confusion of songs from all directions, a jumble of tempos and timbres. (Haskell, pg 81) Haskell
describes how birds use these beautiful songs to mate. Male birds, he explains, take years to perfect
this song. The songs are used to help attract female birds for mating. In the larger scale, these songs
are a daily normal in the morning. Most humans wake up on a daily bases hearing birds sing their
song, but they never bother to pay attention to it. However, when taking a closer look, we understand
the purpose for these songs, and thes songs become even more beautiful and unique. Haskell
illustrates how the Earth s crust is similar to the human race. The earth s crust has, grain by grain,
disassembled and rebuilt itself over and over to the rhythm of millions of millennia. (Haskell, pg 95)
As the earth breaks down and rebuilds itself, humans do the same thing. Haskell explains how the
human race is not endangered of becoming extinct because of our life cycle. Just like the earth, we
eventually die, or disassemble. However, because we reproduce, we are able to rebuild the human
race. Haskell compares the earth s crust to the human race in order to help us understand how unique
the earth truly is. The earth seems even more beautiful and unique as Haskell describes how
magnificent it truly is. As Haskell continues observing, he explains the different rocks he sees. These

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Essay
Left to an End in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
People need to realize that their actions could lead to bigger problems. For example, if one would rob
a bank, they face the consequence of being caught and going to jail for their whole life. That is exactly
what Peyton Farquhar faced in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. Peyton wants to go North, hoping
for an opportunity. However, the problem is getting over the Owl Creek Bridge, where he has to prowl
his way out of the bridge and get past the soldiers surrounding it to finally get North. In his story An
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce uses the Owl Creek Bridge and the water under the
bridge to represent death.
In the story, the bridge shows a transition from imagination to reality. Peyton Farquhar was trying to

The bridge is the transition because he goes from being by the bridge to finally getting to his family.
The author states, Doubtless, despite his suffering, he had fallen asleep while walking, for now he sees
another scene perhaps he has merely recovered from his delirium (Bierce 6). Thinking he actually
passed out, Peyton actually had a transition from being in his mind to reality. He woke up from his
imagination and is hoping a close path to his family. As he pushes open the gate and passes up the
wide white walk, he sees a flutter of female garments; his wife, looking fresh and cool and sweet...
(Bierce 6). This scene shows that he finally got to his wife and is about to hug her. However, he dealt
through all of this to just go in another transition. As he went to hug his wife, imagination turns to
reality again and he is actually left hanging on the Owl Creek Bridge. This links with the claim due to
the two transitions from the bridge actually leading Farquhar to his tragic

Question1
The achievement motive emphasized the notion that links the personality traits and social background
check of a person with his or her level of need for achievement. David McClelland stressed that the
need for achievement is an apparent human motive that can be distinguished from other needs. He
believed that the achievement motivated people, do not turn down rewards but the rewards are not
important as the accomplishment itself (Bernstein, 2006).
Motivation is based on the individual s emotions and the achievement related goals. The achievement
motivation is aimed at attaining success and achieving all of our ambitions in life. As a result of this
the achievement goals can influence our natural behaviour (Rochester Institute, 2005).
Situational factors also affect achievement behaviour. The search for achievement is likely to increase
when the possibility of success and the incentive value of success are high (Rochester Institute, 2005).
This can be attributed to the following reasons:
a) As duties get easier, success becomes more fulfilling and as tasks get harder success becomes less
fulfilling.
b) Reasonably challenging tasks seem to offer the best overall worth in terms of maximizing the
person s sense of accomplishment.
c) People differing in their desires to avoid failure, emphasizes that emotion and motivation are

b) Dry process: In dry mix process, compressed air propels premixed mortar and damp aggregate and

Surface preparation before shotcreting involves a thorough cleaning and removing all loose aggregate

and cover a wide basis of neurological deficits that an athlete may experience after the event of a
concussion. In addition, in an area where one baseline testing lacks or has disadvantages in, another
incorporated type of baseline testing can essentially make up for such incapacity, thus providing a
more comprehensive evaluation of the athlete. Such thoughts are echoed in the research article,
National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Athletic Trainers Concussion Management
Practice Patterns, in which multifaceted testing is said to have each component resolves
independently, deterring the overreliance on any individual assessment tool [that] may inappropriately
either fail to identify the presence of a concussion or allow premature return to participation (Kelly et
al). Overall, multifaceted baseline testing provides a thorough evaluation of an injured athlete,
allowing for better and more appropriate treatment

Why Is Jay Gatsby Great
Although some say that Jay Gatsby isn t as great as the title of the book, because of all the fraud he
has committed, Jay Gatsby can be viewed as great because he did not allow his circumstances at birth
to hold him back, he achieved incredible amounts of wealth, which he shared with others, and his
primary desire for Daisy s love was genuine. Most people born into poverty remain there because they
do not have enough faith in themselves to get out, but James Gatz was different. Gatz was determined
to forget his past, since his past was holding him back from what he wanted to pursue in the future.
Gatsby later reveals his true past to Nick and Nick tells us that his parents were shiftless and
unsuccessful farm people and his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. (98)
Nick continues to explain how awful his life was when he was poor and how he felt about his family.

Hypothalamic Progesterone Essay
Journal Article Discussion 1 1) Does the title of the article properly reflect the findings of the
experiment and why? The title of this article does properly reflect the findings of this experiment
because the results of this study are that hypothalamic progesterone is required for LH release and is
important in the LH surge. This title also includes how the study animals were modified prior to
experimentation and the name of the animals in this study. It is important to identify the study animal
in the title of the article so that readers know that the experiments are conducted in a mammalian
system and which hormones will be discussed in the article. 2) State the hypothesis tested Did the

a) Did the authors over interpret the results explain? During estrogen induced LH surge trilostane
inhibited the amount of LH hormone in the blood. Trilostane blocks the synthesis of progesterone
which means that animals treated with this can not produce progesterone. This means that although
estrogen is available, progesterone and estrogen is need for an LH surge to occur. Female progesterone
levels are highest in the hypothalamus. This means that progesterone can be made in the brain and is
made in various parts of the brain. Although progesterone is made in other regions of the brain,
estrogen induced progesterone are located in the hypothalamus. Since progesterone levels where the
highest in the hypothalamus, this means that estrogen is needed to turn on the receptor which also
stimulate the production of progesterone and thus LH hormone to be released which then lead to
ovulation. The author did not over interpret their result because the discussion connect the results back
to their initial study and how the LH occurs in

Ethical Issues In Genetic Research
As the effects of genes on human physiology and disease are increasingly being examined in
laboratories and clinics across the world, the discussion surrounding informing the family members of
tested patients needs to be explored. Previous research has discovered that certain genetic mutations
can predict with a high degree of accuracy the rate of occurrence of disease not only in the tested
participant but in the family as a whole. One such genetic mutation is a change in the Adenomatous
Polyposis Coli (APC) gene and a corresponding increase in the rate of occurrence of Familial
Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). Researchers need to address the question of whether or not to inform
the family members of a participant if one of these genes is discovered. In this paper, we discuss
whether the researchers have the ethical responsibility to inform the family of a tested participant s
APC status and the implications that will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These adenomatous colorectal polyps will eventually develop into colorectal cancer if a prophylactic
colostomy is not completed [2]. FAP affects both sexes equally with an incidence rate of 1/8300 [3]. A
mutation in the APC gene causes 60% of FAP [4]. In people with the APC mutation there is an almost
100% chance colorectal cancer will appear by the age of forty years without treatment [5]. FAP is an
autosomal dominant syndrome, and thus the offspring of an affected parent has a 50% risk of
inheriting the defective APC gene [3]. With genetic testing of his parents, a child s risk of developing
late stage cancer is significantly reduced due to the increased detection of early stage polyps [6]. Due
to this, the psychological, moral and ethical issues associated with genetic testing and the subsequent
reporting of the results to the family members of those tested must be considered due to the ethical
dilemmas this

This paper presents the results of the authors detailed research into competition between
multinationals and local Chinese companies in 10 industries over the past five years. They conclude
that local companies are now threatening multinationals plans to conquer the China market. They
analyse this new competitive game in terms of a dynamic battle of competencies. Multinationals start
off with better industry specific technology and know how, and a higher level of competence in key
functions like marketing and financial management. Chinese companies enjoy a better understanding

Our research over the past five years into the battles between multinationals and local Chinese
companies reveals that while market dominance by local champions is far from universal, it s
becoming ever more frequent. In industries as different as beer brewing, mobile phone manufacturing
and laundry detergent production, Chinese companies often seeming to appear from nowhere are
forcing multinationals to rethink their strategies and their hopes for explosive growth in the China
market.
1
The message is clear: Multinationals must factor in the existence of robust local competition, while
considering the new opportunities that have opened up as a result of China s WTO membership. To
understand the way competition between multinationals and local champions is evolving and to
pinpoint the keys to success, we traced the evolution of competition in China in 10 industries over the
last 10 years.2 We conducted more than 100 interviews with dozens of leading companies operating in
China, both multinationals and locals, and reviewed thousands of pages of secondary data. The picture
of competition that emerged from our research can best be described not in terms of traditional market
positioning, but as a battle of competencies between multinationals and local players.
Constraints on Multinationals Multinationals generally start off with clear advantages in two areas:

Immigration Problems In America
America is often referred to as the Land of Immigration ( A History of Immigration in the USA ). The
foundation of America was built on immigration, when in 1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian
explorer, discovered the Americas. Not only is immigration the base of America s history, but it is also
beneficial to the economy and society. Immigration increases the labor force, including everyday,
necessary jobs (Anderson). Therefore, immigrants are beneficial to the economical and societal
growth of America. To begin with, immigration causes a number of problems for America. The first
problem is that America is being overrun with immigrants. This problem is focusing on the
undocumented immigrants. A solution to stopping undocumented immigrants from overrunning
America is building a wall. The overwhelming increase of immigrants is causing a problem for U.S.
citizens; because of immigrants, jobs are taken away from American citizens. A third problem that
immigration causes is that immigrants are a drain on society s resources (Cole). Government benefits
should be cut off from immigrants. Stopping these benefits would save money and diminish incentives
for immigrants to illegally enter the United States (Cole). Although immigrants come to America, they
refuse to assimilate (Cole). Their refusal to assimilate denies America of its cultural and political
unity. An example of this is the large migration of the Chinese to California in the 1850s. These

Ethnic Conflicts In Sudan
According to Africa News, 45 people have died as a result of ethnic fighting, The attack against the
Ruop was carried out by the Pakem fighters in retaliation for the attacks that were carried out by a
group of Ruop youths. The fighting was very heavy, it left more than 45 people dead and many more
injured. The military has since been deployed from the state capital to try and stop the violence that
has seen the burning down of houses and property.
These tribal clashes are not new in Sudan for example, the Ma alya and Rizergat ethnic groups had
multiple clashes throughout 2014 that turned into an all out war in the oil rich region of Darfur. This
left a lot of people dead and many more injured from both ethnic groups. The conflicts were about
land rights and shared resources have lasted for more than ten years. The conflict in South Sudan has
seen people flee Sudan into neighboring countries and Sudan itself. There have been nine big refugee
camps that have been created but to According to Rev. Michael Didi, the fighting follows them even in
the refugee camps. And because of this, each ethnic group are put separately even in the camps.
This ethnic fighting is not confined to Sudan, almost everyone will remember the genocide in Rwanda
where members of the Hutu majority murdered about 800,000 Tutsi minorities. Ordinary people were
incited by local officials to take arms against there neighbor. The brutality spread throughout the
country with shocking speed, no one spared

A Girl Of The Limberlost Analysis
In the novel A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter, there lies in the pages the themes of
nature and moths, both intrinsic motifs sunk deep into the bones of the storyline. The beauty and
elegance of nature is viewed by the characters as a direct manifestation of the hand of God. As such,
the characters in the story basked in the glory of the outdoors and spent most the time perusing the
surrounding areas around their homes. Each character in the novel had a different relationship to
nature. For some, such as nature was a way to find inner peace. For others, nature represented the
turbulence and wildness upon which the course of life took you. Specific places out in the surrounding
environment novel also had a noteworthy part in the theme of nature. And then you have characters in
which nature played a more significant role such as Elnora and her mother Mrs. Comstock s life. The
focal point of the story is focused on the heroin Elnora Comstock with her collection of moths and her
crotchety mother Mrs. Comstock. Elnora is a poor necessitous girl who receives no support from her
mother. This is due to the fact that Mrs. Comstock blames Elnora for her husband s death by
asphyxiation in the limberlost swamp. All of the nurturing and care she had came from Margaret and
Wesley Sinton. The lack of care and support from her mother led Elnora to have to pay for her own
education. She managed to collect the funds she needed by selling her rare

compete with today s competitive business environment. Acceptance, implementation of a change can
be challenging and painful process. Change within an organization can cause tense situation which can
be disturbing to the employees. Under such circumstances, employees have low morale, and
demonstrate resistance to change. Change can fail, not because it s worth failure but because how well
that change is accepted by the people who are most affected by it. Resistance is anything that slows
and stops the movement from happening. In business terminology, a resistance can be defined as a

Sources and Symptoms Resistance to change can cost a significant loss to the business such as project
failure, failure of new initiatives, and customer loss. Resistance is simply a reactive behavior.
Managing employee s resistance to change involves determining both its sources and symptoms. The
sources of resistance are employees perceptions of change which are the beliefs and emotions that
color their judgment. Sources are the root from which the symptoms of resistance grow. The sources
are the thinking and feeling elements of the resistance. The sources of resistance are the emotional and
intellectual responses to the change. The symptoms of resistance are employees reactions to the
change. Symptoms involve dysfunctional behaviors that result when employees act to the sources of
resistance. The symptoms are the behaviors that result from the employees thoughts and feelings about
the change. Active and Passive Reaction to change in an organization is directly linked to employees
perception about the personal impact. The symptoms of reaction can be found at every level of the
organization. Employees resistance to change can be categorized under two categories, active and
passive. The active resistance involves outwardly challenging the change; push back by openly
disagreeing and actively lobbying against the change effort.

Exploring The Role Of Hipparchus In Greek Mythology
Hipparchus was born in 190 B.C. in Nicaea, Bithynia, and died in 120 B.C. Due to this , there is not a
lot information on his early life. He approximately started working as an astronomer in his 30 s.
Hipparchus was best known to be an astronomer, aside from that he was also a Greek mathematician
and geographer. Most of the work that he did is now lost , but Only one work by Hipparchus has
survived, namely Commentary on Aratus and Eudoxus and this is certainly not one of his major
works. It is however important in that it gives us the only source of Hipparchus s own writings .(1)
Nevertheless, most of his research and calculations are found in Almagest by Claudius Ptolemy, which
is how mathematicians can see how he came across the beginnings of trigonometry.
First of all , one of Hipparchus greatest contributions to mathematics was the creation of the
trigonometric table , which allows to tabulate the values of some or all six of the trigonometric
functions for various angles. Additionally, he was also known for discovering the ... Show more

which later became a trigonometric table, which could be seen one of the first calculators. When

Companies Should Receive Parental Leave
Some companies are approving parental leave, even for dads. Besides the mother, the father needs to
take time off and take care of his wife and newborn. The father should not be required to go to work if
he has to stay up all night with his child. Moreover, he should be eligible to receive parental leave
benefits.
Currently, there are some companies that have started giving parental leave for dads. Before this
practice, the parent who commonly received paid leave was the pregnant mother and she had to work
40 hours a week for more than a year. It is important for everyone to get assistance when they need it,
especially a mother who has given birth. Sometimes a father will be fired from his job because his
company does not offer any parental leave. A mother who is working less than 30 hours is now able to
get parental leave with full benefits. In addition to mothers and fathers, foster parents and parents who
adopt are also receiving the benefits of parental leave. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be eligible for these benefits, the mothers must have worked at least 20 hours a week for more than
two years at the company. The mothers can get six weeks of paid leave and 12 weeks of unpaid leave,
which is a federal regulation. However, other parents can only receive up to twelve weeks of unpaid
leave. Parents other than the birth mother, such as the father, still cannot receive full benefits. The only
benefit the father can receive is that he can leave his job to take care of his new baby without the risk
of being fired. However, fathers job titles are not always secure. For that reason, some men are not
willing to risk their job position, and thus they do not like to take parental

Ears Have Walls by Steven Connor Essay
Intro:
In Steven Connor s Ears Have Walls: On Hearing Art (2005) Connor presents us with the idea that
sound art has either gone outside or has the capacity to bring the outside inside. Sound work makes us
aware of the continuing emphasis upon division and partition that continues to exist even in the most
radically revisable or polymorphous gallery space, because sound spreads and leaks, like odour.
Unlike music, Sound Art usually does not require silence for its proper presentation. Containers of
silence called music rooms resonate with the aesthetics and affects on the body of a gallery space;
white walls, floorboards to create optimum acoustics, and an ethereal sense of time and space. When
presented in a gallery space, sound art s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We walk around and we move through constantly changing soundscapes, different types of music,
different genres of music overlap all the time.... So the gallery is the total, immersed experience and
hopefully that transforms the gallery from what we think of as being a rather sterile space for showing
art to something which is much more alive and human.
A desire for non separation of sound artworks can make for an overwhelming but strangely relieving
or refreshing gallery experience. Even though Toop was excited for the possibility of the overlapping
of sound objects which could leak into each other, some artworks including the scarcely audible
scratchings and susurrations of Max Eastley s ethereal metal figures were at risk of being swamped by
the glorious but omnipresent headachy bruise of the sound that throbbed from Pan Sonic s low
frequency installation. Connor reveals that, the solution was a traditional one. Putting up extra walls
within the gallery space to form auditory membranes could insulate and contain the different sound
events.
2nd PARA:
Sound is an integral part of being and orientates us in the world. Sound is exploratory rather than
merely metric or analytic, because sound does not give us just the outline or contour of things their
size, shape and position but also gives us the sense of their quality, or their relation to us: their texture,
density, resistance, porosity, wetness, absorptiveness. Sound art, originally

The Negative Effects Of Fast Food Obesity And Its Effects...
In recent years companies have begun to target children in advertising more and more frequently.
There is a controversy surrounding the topic of whether or not children are critical consumers who can
defend themselves; or whether they are too innocent and impressionable to understand the subliminal
messages in advertising. Companies defend their roles in influencing children on the ground that they
personally believe that children can differentiate the truth of reality compared to fantasy in
advertising. That if that is not the case then it is up to parents to properly teach the understanding of
advertising; that it is not the advertiser s job. However substantial research reveals evidence that states
children are negatively affected by the influence of advertising and media. They learn about the kind
of food to eat through food advertisements, the image society want them to have though clothing ads,
and the gender roles they will partake in from the distinguishing traits of toys. In the last decade the
rate of obesity has risen drastically, many believe this is due to the increase in fast food advertisements
infiltrated worldwide to children of a young age. Obesity in preschool children has risen, with
approximately 20% of children today overweight. In today s society children spend a substantial
amount of time on computers, on their phones, and watching television. While there are indeed some
healthy food advertisements, Rose Gregory in the article Fantasy in Food

  • 2. The Parthenon Essay The ancient Greek civilization contributed many great new ideas and aspects to everyday life that shaped and inspired the modern day society. The Greeks are well known for their construction of temples, acropolis and other grand architectural structures. Among these structures stood one of the most famous, the Parthenon. The Parthenon was a symbol of Greek society and culture as it stood as one of Greece s most important architectural buildings. Besides being the Athenians greatest architectural achievement, the Parthenon serves a basic purpose. Greek architects Ictinus and Callicrates erected the temple atop the southern flank of the acropolis, the central hill of the Greek city state which was used for defensive and religious purposes, then in seventeen years, Ictinus and Callicrates completed the decorations of the Parthenon (Harper OL). The Parthenon is made entirely of a marble from Mount Pentelicus called Pentelic marble and stands approximately eighteen meters high. The selections made for the material of the Parthenon were chosen with many points considered to ensure a strong and sturdy future. The Parthenon was commissioned by Pericles sometime after Greek victories over the Persians between 490 and 480 BC (Glancey 26, 27). During the Persian Greek wars, Athens believed that Athena watched over them and that she helped them throughout the war. The Parthenon represents the wealth, power, society, and culture of Athens. The building of the Parthenon cost the Athenians four hundred and sixty nine talents, which symbolized Athens as wealthy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Functionalists also look at context as important thing in constructing meaning. Context will influence how we interpret a text. However, context is put in the highest level of interpreting meaning. And then, Firth with his work Personality in language and society (1950). Halliday (1994) (cited in Burke, 2014) in his work An Introduction to Functional Grammar proposed what we called as metafunctions . Halliday believed that in a particular language there must be tripartite functions, namely Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual. Ideational or well known as experiential meaning which has a representational function is used to encode any idea or experience of the world; it conveys a picture of reality. Interpersonal function means we use it to encode interaction to see the social relationships. And the last is Textual function of language is used to organize our experiential, logical and interpersonal meanings into a linear and coherent whole and it provides the formal properties of language. Island Biogeography Paper The purpose of island biogeography is to help take a closer look at the speciation of animals on mainland landscapes, and compare them to surrounding islands that separated from the mainland. In this study, the focus is on avian birds and the differences in landscape make up that can influence speciation. The differences can possibly lead to populations of different species settling apart from one another, maybe leading to the extinction of one species and the thriving of another. Although island geography has been a useful tool, it has also been questioned, leading to a new tool: countryside biogeography. In Wolfe et al. • 6. Sociological View Of Religion Praying is an important aspect of all religions as well as Christianity. To observe this specific religious phenomenon, I went to the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. I attended to see one of their prayers. What they were practicing was not an individual action. They were praying with other Christians not by themselves. Also they were praying out loud. The Priest was saying the prayer and the others were either repeating after him or saying Amen when he finished his prayer. After praying, most of the Christians light up candles at specific part of the church. A famous sociologist Emile Durkheim discusses about religion in the perspective of sociology in his book, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life. He mentions in his book that society creates the religion to live with moral rules. Since I observe the atmosphere of that holy place, I came up with several questions. What are the forces to make them go to the Church and pray together? And how do they use the symbols to become a motivated person? In sociological perspective, Durkheim believes that in order to understand the community, one need to understand the religion. In the church, people were praying all together. ... • 7. How Did Liberalism Return To Paganism Liberalism, a return to Paganism. Modern liberalism is an infantile disorder that purveys freedom as living as you like. Apparently it yields indiscriminate tolerance, which is encapsulated in the campus adage I m okay, you re okay , but in reality its followers are intolerant to anything that opposes their worldview. If you probe deeper, it is interesting how the ultimate essence of liberalism, like that of idol worship, is denial of the unity of the world, hence unqualified pluralism. Moreover, is it really a coincidence that Liberalism has embraced everything in paganism that all earlier Abrahamic religions, and finally Islam had rejected the crass materialism, the cynicism, the nihilism and fatalism, the hedonism? • 10. The Impact Of Viking Raids On The British Isles Coming from Scandinavian countries, predominantly Denmark and Norway, the Vikings began raiding the British Isles in the late 700s (James). The Vikings primarily targeted monasteries, because that is where most of the wealth was concentrated (Loughrey). These raids were very violent, people were killed, and the survivors were sold into slavery (Loughrey). These violent raids earned the Vikings the reputation of barbarians, much like the Mongols a few centuries later in Asia. After some time, once the Vikings exhausted most of the wealth in the monasteries, they turned their interest into settling the British Isles (James). By the late 9th century the Vikings had conquered most of England (James). However, even though these Viking kingdoms did not last very long, the Scandinavians who resided there stayed. These Scandinavians would go on to change the British Isles in many ways. Despite the violent and negative impacts of Viking raids on the British Isles, once the Vikings settled down, they had a significant and positive peaceful impact on the British Isles culturally, politically, and economically. The first of these positive impacts was on the culture of the British Isles. One of the ways that the Vikings influenced the culture is evidenced by how they changed the English language. Friedrich Nietzsche s The Antichrist Despite the title, Friedrich Nietzsche s book The Antichrist is anything but contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ as best understood in the Synoptic Gospels. In fact, Nietzsche s project in this work, if I do dare to interpret Nietzsche, is to reveal the complete silliness of ambiguous, vague, absolutely non empirical concepts; specifically, concepts that create values . In fact, Nietzsche s purpose in writing this book is to reveal those who have abused the transcendental in order to manipulate and control those that are unable to understand, or wish not to understand, the improbability of such kinds of divine revelation. Nietzsche claims that the Christian religion has, for a very long time, been used as a means to confuse and dismiss reality. Instead, priests have been suggesting vague concepts such as judgement , salvation , faith , sin , etc. in order to freely command whatever values they see fit. The priests, in Nietzsche s view, have been using the transcendental and unfalsifiable realm of the religious in order to create selfishly motivated lies for the gain of power. The poor masses have been following this bunch of lies because that they are deceived in thinking that they will themselves gain more power by the way of God offering equality and eternal life. However, in all actuality, the world is not equal and these masses are being made to suffer an even greater deal than necessary for the sake of a filthy religious lie. Nietzsche suggests that we, instead, abandon these lies and leave the will of God in the past for a more happy future. Instead, Nietzsche offers, we can come to terms with reality and authentically seek to fulfill our deepest desires; i.e. the natural values attributed to our psyche by the way of the process of ... Derry Renee Celeste History 1301 18 November 2017 The Adversity of a Southern Girl The history of slavery and how it intertwined with the politics of slavery can be found in the story of a young slave name Celia. The historical narrative Celia, A Slave was written in 1991 by the author Melton A. McLaurin. In the year of 1850, a Missouri farmer named Robert Newsom buys a young female slave. She was only fourteen years old when she was purchased. Right after the purchase of Celia, the pattern of sexual abuse from Newsom begin. This true story gives the details of cruelty and execution of a young black female. Black female slaves were essentially powerless in a slave society, unable to legally protect themselves from physical assaults of either white or black males (113). McLaurin has written over twenty books. Some of his most highly rated books include; The Knights of Labor in the South, The North Carolina State Fair, Growing up White in the Segregated South for which he received the Lillian Smith Award and Celia, A Slave. • 14. Haskell Observes The Songs Of The Birds In The Forest... On April 16th, Haskell observes the songs of the birds in the forest. The dry buzz unleashes a confusion of songs from all directions, a jumble of tempos and timbres. (Haskell, pg 81) Haskell describes how birds use these beautiful songs to mate. Male birds, he explains, take years to perfect this song. The songs are used to help attract female birds for mating. In the larger scale, these songs are a daily normal in the morning. Most humans wake up on a daily bases hearing birds sing their song, but they never bother to pay attention to it. However, when taking a closer look, we understand the purpose for these songs, and thes songs become even more beautiful and unique. Haskell illustrates how the Earth s crust is similar to the human race. The earth s crust has, grain by grain, disassembled and rebuilt itself over and over to the rhythm of millions of millennia. (Haskell, pg 95) As the earth breaks down and rebuilds itself, humans do the same thing. Haskell explains how the human race is not endangered of becoming extinct because of our life cycle. Just like the earth, we eventually die, or disassemble. However, because we reproduce, we are able to rebuild the human race. Haskell compares the earth s crust to the human race in order to help us understand how unique the earth truly is. The earth seems even more beautiful and unique as Haskell describes how magnificent it truly is. As Haskell continues observing, he explains the different rocks he sees. These ... He believed that the achievement motivated people, do not turn down rewards but the rewards are not important as the accomplishment itself (Bernstein, 2006). Motivation is based on the individual s emotions and the achievement related goals. The achievement motivation is aimed at attaining success and achieving all of our ambitions in life. As a result of this the achievement goals can influence our natural behaviour (Rochester Institute, 2005). Situational factors also affect achievement behaviour. The search for achievement is likely to increase when the possibility of success and the incentive value of success are high (Rochester Institute, 2005). This can be attributed to the following reasons: a) As duties get easier, success becomes more fulfilling and as tasks get harder success becomes less fulfilling. b) Reasonably challenging tasks seem to offer the best overall worth in terms of maximizing the person s sense of accomplishment. c) People differing in their desires to avoid failure, emphasizes that emotion and motivation are interweaved. The foundation of America was built on immigration, when in 1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, discovered the Americas. Not only is immigration the base of America s history, but it is also beneficial to the economy and society. Immigration increases the labor force, including everyday, necessary jobs (Anderson). Therefore, immigrants are beneficial to the economical and societal growth of America. To begin with, immigration causes a number of problems for America. The first problem is that America is being overrun with immigrants. This problem is focusing on the undocumented immigrants. A solution to stopping undocumented immigrants from overrunning America is building a wall. The overwhelming increase of immigrants is causing a problem for U.S. citizens; because of immigrants, jobs are taken away from American citizens. A third problem that immigration causes is that immigrants are a drain on society s resources (Cole). Government benefits should be cut off from immigrants. Stopping these benefits would save money and diminish incentives for immigrants to illegally enter the United States (Cole). Although immigrants come to America, they refuse to assimilate (Cole). Their refusal to assimilate denies America of its cultural and political unity. An example of this is the large migration of the Chinese to California in the 1850s. These Chinese immigrants ... • 37. Exploring The Role Of Hipparchus In Greek Mythology Hipparchus was born in 190 B.C. in Nicaea, Bithynia, and died in 120 B.C. Due to this , there is not a lot information on his early life. He approximately started working as an astronomer in his 30 s. Hipparchus was best known to be an astronomer, aside from that he was also a Greek mathematician and geographer. Most of the work that he did is now lost , but Only one work by Hipparchus has survived, namely Commentary on Aratus and Eudoxus and this is certainly not one of his major works. It is however important in that it gives us the only source of Hipparchus s own writings .(1) Nevertheless, most of his research and calculations are found in Almagest by Claudius Ptolemy, which is how mathematicians can see how he came across the beginnings of trigonometry. • 38. Companies Should Receive Parental Leave Some companies are approving parental leave, even for dads. Besides the mother, the father needs to take time off and take care of his wife and newborn. The father should not be required to go to work if he has to stay up all night with his child. Moreover, he should be eligible to receive parental leave benefits. Currently, there are some companies that have started giving parental leave for dads. Before this practice, the parent who commonly received paid leave was the pregnant mother and she had to work 40 hours a week for more than a year. It is important for everyone to get assistance when they need it, especially a mother who has given birth. Sometimes a father will be fired from his job because his company does not offer any parental leave. A mother who is working less than 30 hours is now able to get parental leave with full benefits. In addition to mothers and fathers, foster parents and parents who adopt are also receiving the benefits of parental leave. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Ears Have Walls by Steven Connor Essay Intro: In Steven Connor s Ears Have Walls: On Hearing Art (2005) Connor presents us with the idea that sound art has either gone outside or has the capacity to bring the outside inside. Sound work makes us aware of the continuing emphasis upon division and partition that continues to exist even in the most radically revisable or polymorphous gallery space, because sound spreads and leaks, like odour. Unlike music, Sound Art usually does not require silence for its proper presentation. Containers of silence called music rooms resonate with the aesthetics and affects on the body of a gallery space; white walls, floorboards to create optimum acoustics, and an ethereal sense of time and space. When presented in a gallery space, sound art s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We walk around and we move through constantly changing soundscapes, different types of music, different genres of music overlap all the time.... So the gallery is the total, immersed experience and hopefully that transforms the gallery from what we think of as being a rather sterile space for showing art to something which is much more alive and human. A desire for non separation of sound artworks can make for an overwhelming but strangely relieving or refreshing gallery experience. Even though Toop was excited for the possibility of the overlapping of sound objects which could leak into each other, some artworks including the scarcely audible scratchings and susurrations of Max Eastley s ethereal metal figures were at risk of being swamped by the glorious but omnipresent headachy bruise of the sound that throbbed from Pan Sonic s low frequency installation. Connor reveals that, the solution was a traditional one. Putting up extra walls within the gallery space to form auditory membranes could insulate and contain the different sound events. 2nd PARA: Sound is an integral part of being and orientates us in the world. Sound is exploratory rather than merely metric or analytic, because sound does not give us just the outline or contour of things their size, shape and position but also gives us the sense of their quality, or their relation to us: their texture, density, resistance, porosity, wetness, absorptiveness. • 41. The Negative Effects Of Fast Food Obesity And Its Effects... In recent years companies have begun to target children in advertising more and more frequently. There is a controversy surrounding the topic of whether or not children are critical consumers who can defend themselves; or whether they are too innocent and impressionable to understand the subliminal messages in advertising. Companies defend their roles in influencing children on the ground that they personally believe that children can differentiate the truth of reality compared to fantasy in advertising. That if that is not the case then it is up to parents to properly teach the understanding of advertising; that it is not the advertiser s job. However substantial research reveals evidence that states children are negatively affected by the influence of advertising and media. They learn about the kind of food to eat through food advertisements, the image society want them to have though clothing ads, and the gender roles they will partake in from the distinguishing traits of toys. In the last decade the rate of obesity has risen drastically, many believe this is due to the increase in fast food advertisements infiltrated worldwide to children of a young age. Obesity in preschool children has risen, with approximately 20% of children today overweight. In today s society children spend a substantial amount of time on computers, on their phones, and watching television.
