In a nuclear reactor of a nuclear power plant, the fission process is contained within the
zirconium or magnesium cladding that surrounds the fuel rods. The fuel rods are spent after the
fission takes place. They are highly radioactive and give off dangerous gamma radiation, which is
similar to X ray and can therefore penetrate through a human body. It is necessary to shield the
spent fuel rods with water and thick lead walls (Bertell, 1985). These fuel rods and their contents,
are essentially what comprises nuclear waste and is what needs to be kept secure for hundreds of
thousands of years.

There are two types of radiation; particle and penetrating. Penetrating radiation or gamma radiation,
can pass through human tissue and damages cell functions. After about 500 years, gamma radiation
in nuclear fuel waste drops to low enough levels that it poses no real threat to humans (AECB,
1992). Particle radiation includes alphan and beta radiation. This type of radiation is given off by
the longer lived radioactive substances. This means that the substances remain hazardous for many

salinity, dissolved oxygen concentrations and can provide evidence of changes in bio mineralization
in correlation with seasonality and ontology. The shells of Tridacnaare beneficial for Pleistocene
paleoceanography isotopic studies because of their large size making it easier to gain detailed

Though he is a cat, and I am no more than a mere human being, we both share the attribute of
being slightly overweight. Well, that description would fit me better than it would fit Garfield,
as he probably weighs about a hundred pounds more than your typical lazy tabby cat. His weight
is often an object of ridicule in his comic strips, as is my weight being an object of ridicule
although in reality, it isn t too severe. Garfield does not handle insults regarding his weight well,
and will often respond to remarks about such characteristic with a snide comeback or violence.
When that occurs, as opposed to how Garfield deals with it, I simply shrug it off. As stated before,

Endgame Figurative Language
Mankind has always had one question no living person can answer. What is the meaning of our
existence? Are we just here to just run around this planet doing nothing but survive or does
everything we do have a purpose? Samuel Beckett, a well studied French writer, seems to write in a
way that makes his readers feel like mankind cannot find its identity. He validates the idea that
humans are just wondering about life with no meaning with his writing in Endgame. Samuel

As people get older they experience more, which gives them the chance to be let down, and
disappointed. When this happens people get led into Freud s idea that once they get let down
they become trapped in a world of disappointment as shown when Hamm states, I once knew a
madman who thought the end of the world had come. He was a painter and engraver. I had a
great fondness for him. I used to go and see him, in the asylum. I d take him by the hand and
drag him to the window. Look! There! All that rising corn! And there! Look! The sails of the
herring fleet! All that loveliness! (Pause.) He d snatch away his hand and go back into his
corner. Appalled. All he had seen was ashes. (Pause.) He alone had been spared. (Pause.)
Forgotten. (Pause.) It appears the case is ... was not so ... so unusual (Beckett). The madman is
just an older gentleman who sees no meaning in the world, therefore he is seen as crazy to
Hamm. The way Hamm describes the madman suggest they are suffering from the same
pathological sickness. When the characters look out the window they see nothing but grey just as
the madman did. Dilworth explains Beckett s personal connection to the madman when he states,
Furthermore, Artaud, like Beckett s nameless figure, was mad, suffering for most of his life from
schizophrenia (Dilworth). This quote explains how Beckett had a close who was very much like
the madman which suggest that the character in his play was based of his friend. The madman is
a symbol of melancholia feelings and mourning for his friend. Beckett writes the play as if all
people become that madman who sees nothing but ashes when they look out the window because
of wounded egos. He uses the madman as a symbol to create the illusion that all humans will
eventually see the world as meaningless and ponder
