Historical Events In Beowulf
events in the poem take place in the late 5th century, A.D., after the Anglo Saxons had started their
journey to England, and before the beginning of the 7th century, a time when the Anglo Saxon people
were either newly arrived or still in close contact with their Germanic kinsmen in Northern Germany.
The poem may have been brought to England by people of Geatish origins.[8] It has been suggested
that Beowulf was first composed in the 7th century at Rendlesham in East Anglia, as the Sutton Hoo
ship burial also shows close connections with Scandinavia, and also that the East Anglian royal
dynasty, the Wuffings, may have been descendants of Geatish Wulfings.[9][10] Others have associated
this poem with the court of King Alfred, or with the court of King Cnut.[11][pages needed]

Scholars generally agree that many of the personalities of Beowulf also appear in Scandinavian
sources (specific works designated in the following section).[12] This does not only concern people
(e.g., Healfdene, Hroðgar, Halga, Hroðulf, Eadgils and Ohthere), but also clans (e.g., Scyldings,
Scylfings and Wulfings) and some of the events (e.g., the Battle on the Ice of Lake Vänern). The
dating of the events in the poem has been confirmed by archaeological excavations of the barrows
indicated by Snorri Sturluson and by Swedish tradition as the graves of Ohthere (dated to c. 530) and
his son Eadgils (dated to c. 575) in

She by H. Rider Haggard and Things Fall Apart by Chinua...
How are the roles and representations of females in the texts She by H. Rider Haggard and Things Fall
Apart by Chinua Achebe presented? Given two different situations the women are in, the outcome is
close to the same. Ayesha in She plays a role she created for herself in the Amahagger community,
which can be contrasted with the culture the novel was written in by the author at the time. The
women in Things Fall Apart are also as such represented by their culture, and can be compared to the
female gender seen by their people as a distinct role. In both, the woman in these texts take on roles
and functions of the cultures that they existed inside, which is important to understand why they
behave as they do. In the novel She , Ayesha plays a role that she has cultivated for herself as the
leader of an isolated culture. She behaves in the way that this kind of leader should, How thinkest thou
that I rule this people? I have but a regiment of guards to do my bidding, therefore it is not by force. It
is by terror. My empire is a moral one (Haggard 170). She says this to Holly when discussing her
harsh punishment to the criminal Amahagger, showing that she has created a culture ruled by terror,
and she acts accordingly to that. She will be not swayed to behave differently, since this is the role she
holds herself in. Ayesha has come to expect complete submission to her rule, shown when she tries to

Analyzing Akira Kurosawa s The Blizzard
Yume Dreams Akira Kurosawa Japan 1990 115 minutes Kurosawa first gives the viewer a true sense
of the plot in his third vignette titled The Blizzard. Here the viewer(s) see the man along with others
struggling against the bitter cold storm. At the peak of the storm the men seemingly give up entirely.
The main character shows his strength by defeating ultimately his own paranormal figure. This allows
the man to not only help himself, but the other men along with him as well. His choice ultimately
saved them all. This idea of choice is shown in the following vignette as well The Tunnel. Here a dog
appears to warn the man to stay out of or to stay away from the tunnel. The man walks through the
tunnel slowly and cautiously. He gives the illusion that he is looking at something he remembers or his
past per se. Reaching the end of the tunnel he is faced with men of his past. He then tells the men
about his failed choice to put them into action. His determination to send the men back to where they
are from, matches the mountain climbers will to resist sleep. This appears again within the vignette

West Jest vs Air Canada Essay
How serious is the threat from conventional airlines that want to imitate the westjet culture? What
does it take to imitate organizational culture? Can Air Canada compete against westjet s employee
productivity and its relationship with its employees?
Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low cost carrier while
employing non unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique
organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. In a labor managed firm employees are
owners, and they are affected by the company s performance through profit sharing. Then it should not
be surprising that in labor managed firms, the employees can voice their opinions and actually ...

A labor force in its most basic form, through profit maximizing practices, must be minimized, due to
the cost associated with it, in order to drive up profit. And it is because of this outlook that WestJet has
managed to outperform their competition, for example Air Canada. This theory is in sync with the
findings of Jeffery Pfeffer in his 1995 paper Producing sustainable competitive advantage through the
effective management of people.
As described above, the organizational culture, the foundation of WestJet s success, is heavily
weighted on its people. Where as the competition, sees the workforce as a cost and aims to minimize
it, WestJet looks at their work force as an asset and an investment. Conventional airlines run their
business as any other company. They look out for the shareholder s best interest and do not pay the
slightest attention to their workforce. In WestJet s culture, the workforce consists of the shareholders
due to profit sharing and co operative environment. By nature capital managed firms will have a hard
time converting to labor managed firm. They will have to change a lot of rules and regulations that
governs their everyday operations. They will face a large number of opposition by their shareholders.
According to Fernandez Guadano (2009) even if they do manage to adopt similar practices as labor
managed firms, they will never be able to achieve the same rate of employee ownership and profit
sharing as their counterparts,

The Problem Of Textbooks Prices
During the Spring semester of 2017, I completed my Applied Field Experience in the state s largest
student run nonprofit organization, New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG). I worked
on the Making Textbooks More Affordable campaign, which addressed the problem of prohibitively
high textbooks prices.
A survey that involved more than 2,000 college students in 33 states and 156 different campuses finds
out that average student spends $1,200 each year on textbooks and supplies alone, which equals to 39
percent of tuition and fees at a community college, and 14 percent of tuition and fees at a four year
public university (Bidwell, 2014). Moreover, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
the price of textbook has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, students still have to endure the excessively high price of textbooks. So, how to reduce the
price of textbooks fundamentally should be taken into consideration.
NJPIRG came up with the idea of Open and Affordable Textbook (OAT) Project since 2014. They
asserted that universities should found the project by letting professors adopting open and free
textbooks for their classes, so students can save money on textbooks. Open textbooks are defined as
textbooks have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed while
download for no cost. These books have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and
universities to assess their quality (Open Textbook Library). Many colleges and universities in
America have successful open textbooks program for reference, including the University of
Massachusetts Amherst, Kansas State University, Tacoma Community College and the University of
Maryland, and so on.
After two years of effort, NJPIRG successfully persuade the Rutgers University to launch the OAT
Project to protect students interest. In spring 2017, the first cycle of the OAT Project was implemented
by Rutgers Library. According to the library, thirty two grants of $1,000 each were awarded to faculty
and instructors across the system who chose to adopt, remix, or create a free or low cost textbook, as
an alternative to traditional course materials (Rutgers

Women Should Be Integrated Into Combat Positions
Women should be integrated into combat positions such as infantry, artillery, and Special Forces. If a
woman chooses this kind of challenge, then she is more than capable. Women are as tough as men.
They can do what a man can do, and if that is going into combat then yes, why not? Women can fight,
shoot, run, work hard, and win for this country like the men of this country do. Women have been in
combat for a long time, but now women are actually in combat rather than helping the men out with
injuries, being a laundresses, a cook, and a nurse. Women can go into combat, just like a man.
Women should be let onto infantry and artillery positions. Women have been involved in our nation s
military since the Revolutionary War, serving not only as nurses and cooks, but also supplying water
to thirsty soldiers on the battlefield. Throughout history, men have always fought our battles while
women stood by, but what if I told you that in some countries, women are fighting alongside men
inside combat zones? Here in the U.S., there is an immeasurable disagreement about equality in the
military. One of the supporting arguments is that several other countries outside the U.S. already have
women serving on the front lines. Countries such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, all have
allowed women to serve in any type combat that they qualify in and or meet requirements. While there
are several countries that don t allow women in combat, the U.S. has recently had the biggest sparring

The Ongoing Issue of Animal Cruelty, Abuse, and Animal...
Animal cruelty is an ongoing issue in today s society. When we listen to the news and hear about these
animals being starved, beaten, and treated poorly our hearts drop and we get a lump in our throat
holding back the tears. We see these animals suffer, we see the pain in their eyes begging for our help,
we want to put an end to this but we fail to see the bigger picture. Animal cruelty is a more severe and
extreme than we think it is. Animal cruelty just is not owners beating their pets. Animal cruelty is
animal testing. Scientist performs experiments on these animals that have no voice, no control, no way
to stop what is happening to them. These animals are helpless, innocent creatures that have no idea
why this is happening to them. These animals are enduring pain they are being deformed, having body
parts mutilated, and many are killed. There are many organizations today such as PETA fighting to
improve animal welfare but cruelty still continues. Animal testing needs to be completely banned or
modified so the animals do not suffer. Scientific experiments on animals are cruel and unethical.
These tests done on animals do not yield positive results that are beneficial to humans.
Animal testing has been round since early Greek and Roman civilization. Animal dissection was
performed in order to obtain more knowledge of the human anatomy. Animal anatomy is similar to
human anatomy but while performing these operations on animals. Physicians feel no sympathy for

U.s. History Honors Summer Reading
U.S. History Honors Summer Reading 1. According to Ellis s preface, explain what is so phenomenal
about the founding of the United States? According to Ellis it is phenomenal that the United States
decided to rule as a Republic. Never before in history has a new empire or country ruled as a Republic
and succeeded except for the Roman Empire. Also the colonies had no strict adhesive keeping them
together as a nation, but they still managed to survive. 2. Analyze what the author calls the paradox of
the revolutionary era. The Paradox of the revolutionary era was a dilemma that can be viewed as near
sighted and far sighted . These were the two different ways of justifying becoming an independent
nation. The people who were more far sighted could see the many possibilities the nation held in the
future and let this influence their actions in attempt to create a completely independent and free nation.
However, the near sighted way was mostly arguing against the authority of Parliament; they were
against centralized political powers ruling other areas from faraway places that weren t under its
immediate supervision. 3. Examine some of the criticisms of the Constitutional Convention. Some of
the criticisms of the constitutional convention were that, firstly, the Convention went beyond its
purpose, to revise the Articles of Confederation, and instead replaced it with an entirely new
government. Secondly, that the sessions were held in complete secrecy. This is untrue

Biography Of Miles Davis Essay
Biography of Miles Davis
Born on May 26, 1926, Miles Davis is considered to be one of the most influential jazz musicians in
history. Being a trumpeter, keyboardist, composer, and band leader, Miles is responsible for the
popularization of many styles of jazz throughout his long and prolific career. Miles Dewey Davis was
born into a well to do family in the town of Alton, Illinois. The family owned a large portion of a farm
where Miles learned to ride horses as a young boy. In 1927 the family moved to East St. Louis. Miles
mother, Cleota Henry, encouraged him to play the violin while his father bought him a trumpet when
he turned thirteen and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of keeping with his studies, Miles was more concerned with his career as a musician in a band.
Miles made some of his first recordings in 1945 and also joined Charlie Parker s quintet. Though
Miles was not as developed during this time, his style was already easily recognizable and
distinguished. In 1949, Miles had the opportunity to lead a band which consisted of nine players, also
known as a nonet. The band used non traditional instruments in a jazz setting. Many consider this to
be the birth of. That same year Miles visited Europe and played at that year s Paris Jazz Festival in
May. Because of his contact with people in the New York Clubs, Miles became addicted to heroin.
Because of this, in 1953, Miles returned to his father s farm and remained there until his addiction was
broken. In 1954 Miles made a number of important recordings, and began to utilize the Harmon mute
which darkened the sound of his trumpet. Miles used this mute throughout the rest of his career. 1955
was perhaps one of the most important years of Mile s career. Miles played one his most popular solos
ever for Thelonius Monk s Round Midnight at the Newport Jazz Festival. Miles was almost
immediately popularized and continued to sign a record deal with Columbia and form his first quintet.

When we dropped the bombs we prevented over one thousand deaths, the death rate of the Japanese

Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl
Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl
Being a teenage girl, I know what it is like to be let down, put down, and feel completely alone. But I
also know what it takes to get back up, be courageous, and fight. One quality a teenage girl must have
is courage. Courage to stand up for yourself and others. To succeed, a teenage girl must have smarts.
Street smarts as well as book smarts are important. However, one quality that most teenage girls have
is a carelessly open heart; letting anyone in that tries. These qualities of a teenage girl may lead her to
heartbreak and emotional struggles, but overall can contribute to a successful life. The first quality an
adolescent girl must have to succeed, is courage. One reason for this quality is ... Show more content

She may do this because she wants to feel loved and needed. This leads to my second reason which is
the motivation of her partner. He may be looking to take advantage of her and wishes to leave her
heartbroken. When the partner realizes the girl s despiration, he feels a position of power and can
further take advantage of her; body and soul. Through my experience, I hear how girls can be taken
advantage of, and move from partner to partner as a reaction. Avoiding a broken heart can be
accomplished by having a strong heart that is selective and strives for mutual and balanced
commitment. A final reason for a teenage girl to be cautious with her heart is in connection to her self
worth. When a girl gets her heart broken, she may feel intense loneliness, or she may look quickly for
someone else to love and care for in order to avoid or fill the void of emotional pain. She may start
feeling negatively about herself and her body and believe she will never be good enough. This poor
self image can lead to severe depression and self harm. Many times, this heartache happens because a
girl lets someone into her life without boundaries, or standards and once she realize this, she can feel
defeated. For these reasons, having an open heart without using intelligence is a dangerous
combination for a teenage girl. As you can see by the reasons above, teenage girls must have
intelligence and courage to be successful.

Mom? Dad? Where do babies come from? asked one of my children not too long ago. You might

question to be asked! But let s be realistic: it is probably not every parent s preferred one. How about,

Therefore, they are baptized as soon as possible because their parents, as well as the Church, cannot

How The Three Artists ( Michelle Lougee, Andy Goldsworthy,...
The aim and intentions of this essay is to compare and contrast how the three artists (Michelle Lougee,
Andy Goldsworthy, and Hermannsburg Potters) use their materials to communicate ideas about the
natural environment.
Michelle Lougee is a very famous environmental artist, sculptor, and ceramist. She is a member of the
Boston Sculptors Gallery, and her artwork has been shown in many New England museum exhibits.
She also teaches sculpture, ceramics, pottery, and drawing to adults and children at various local
museums. She holds an M.F.A and a B.F.A. from Boston University and lives in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. Her work focuses on the delicate balance between nature versus human society and
technology. The contrast of this relationship is explored in both materials and subject matter. The
combination of the two factions produce mysterious yet familiar forms. Michelle Lougee strives to
replicate the animated quality that all living things possess. She believes that her job as an
environmental artist is to capture that beauty in my work while instilling a message into it. Michelle
Lougee uses a wide variety of naturally found materials from the environment. These materials are
very banal. They include clay, papyrus, paper, cloth, plastic, post consumer grocery bags, and plastic
bags. Michelle Lougee s signature material is the plastic bags as they are symbolic of the harmfulness
brought to our environment. You can see her thorough incorporation of plastic bags in her Gyre

The Principles Of Knowledge Management Principles
Knowledge Management Principles
The twelve Knowledge Management Principles are aimed at leading individuals to apply key Army
principles to their decisions and incorporate them into the actions that they undertake. Out of these
twelve principles, the two that appear to be the most critical would be the first and third principles,
which apply to the training of leaders, managers, and champions on knowledge management
principles and creating an environment in which collaboration can occur on the basis of knowledge
management.
First Principle
The first principle that is associated with Knowledge Management is that of training leaders,
champions, and managers on being able to incorporate these principles into their actions and decision
making. This principle essentially allows the U.S. Army to frame logistics [and other types of]
knowledge holistically (Paparone, 2008, p. 39). The knowledge regarding how to manage actual
knowledge and information needs to begin somewhere, and education and training appear to be the
best place to start in order to create a sound foundation for this knowledge to be build up and
constructed further. Proper and sufficient education and knowledge also allows the organization to
ensure that all staff members, based on their rank and level within the organization, have the needed
knowledge to carry out their assigned tasks and responsibilities, without any obstacles.
This principle is critical for enabling Senior Warrant Staff Officers to perform

The Importance Of Masculinity
Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning small
battles with honor, (Norman Mailer). Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody. For some
people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my dad believes
that in order to have masculinity he must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks having to do with
landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he says something along
the lines of I can fix that in a minute or I ve just got to go get the supplies. He then waits until my
mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that we did not give him enough time to
get it done. My dad, along with my other male friends, feels that since he is a male he needs to prove
his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. My father went to school at Johnson and Wales
University for a degree in criminal justice. Getting a bachelor s degree in criminal justice does not
teach one how to fix the caulk in a bathtub; in spite of that, my father attempted this task. A couple of
weeks ago, I realized that the caulk in my shower had begun to deteriorate. I informed my dad that I
thought it needed to be repaired and suggested he call a plumber. His response went a little bit like this
Why do I need a plumber? That s an easy fix! All I have to do is... He then proceeded to explain to me
how he believed one would fix the caulk in a shower. I knew

journey through Sierra Leone during the outbreak of war. Beah had to learn to survive the harsh
outcome of the war, resulting in the loss of those whom were close to him, family and friends, and
trust in people. The book has a recurring theme of nature and the natural world. In the book, the world
at night, as well as the moon, serves as both a safeguard and a bringer of bereavement. As a boy,
Ishmael has heard stories and proverbs about the moon. An old man in his village would say, We must

making the sky weep. Its tears saved us from the red bullets. (Pg. 98) Ishmael explains that, he can see
the redness that the guns give off when they are fired. Another example of when the night is his savior,
is when he is living in Freetown after the rebels overthrow the government. Nightfall seemed far

Ishmael goes into hiding hoping that night would come. He compares the wait for nightfall to

Wasted Time In High School
Emily Sellers
Composition 1301 332
Mrs. Kinkead
24 September 2017 Wasted time in High School
Public high schools tend to waste a lot of time in class doing things that aren t related to school at all.
It has been reported that in many schools, teachers make students do chores for them for extra credit
points, while others are learning new things. Jay Mathews wrote A startling waste of precious
classroom time, published in 2014 in the Washington Post, and he argues that so much time is wasted
in low income schools due to teachers and it makes it very difficult for students to learn in that
environment. Mathews begins to establish pathos by stating the names of two girls that go to Compton
High School and want to learn, but their school is unable to give them the education they desire.
Mathews established ethos a little later in his article by stating facts about programs he has
encountered with inner city schools; however, toward the end of his article, he uses facts to establish
logos, which is the appeal of logic, while stating that schools have been sued because low income
students have not been given the right education.
Mathews explains that Wasting time is common in the nation s low income schools. Class schedules
can be a mess at the beginning of the year, forcing students to wait days in the library for their
assignments (Mathews). Mathews establishes ethos through stating the facts of wasted time in low
income schools. Mathews states that at Compton High

today s society. One very important point is that kids are growing up much faster, taking on more
responsibilities that years ago might not have been faced for another 5, 10, and 20 years later. Culture
has a very big part in the onset of adult roles at varied ages. The transition to and through this stage

traumatized by who we are becoming. There might be the doubt we are going in the direction we want

The Yellow Wallpaper, By Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Until the end of time, women will find themselves asking, What is one to do? . This could be in
context to an abusive relationship, bearing children, choosing a job career, or virtually anything.
Naturally, women are nurturers and will put others before themselves and for this reason it is a
timeless question. In a short story, The Yellow Wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the
main character finds herself asking this question frequently. The story follows a young woman
suffering from post partum depression and is placed on rest cure by her husband. Gilman uses her own
experiences from rest cure to relate and provide inside feeling to what it felt like to be under these

Analysis Of Louise Gluck s Poem Threshing
In this journal entry I will be discussing Louise Gluck s poem Threshing. Louis Gluck centers her
poem around the simple day in day out lives, that is themselves talk about the way we sometimes
refuse to change our own lives, while the poem uses the sun as an element as the endless loop that is
life and how we keep it the way it is. Threshing s main element is the sun. In many ways, as you read
the poem, you can see that the sun can be seen as the main character in the poem. It dictates the
working men s work, their time of relaxing, how long they are alond to feel free during their time or
relaxing, when they must go back to their stressful home life and when they must return back to work
as though it is an endless in escapable loop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They wake up, go to work, work the full day, come home, and deal with their seemingly difficult
families. They don t search for a better way of life even though they drink and are displeased with how
their home life is. They seem pleased with their work. It is uncomplicated, like them. They do the
physical work, get paid, and go home. The displeasure doesn t come from their working life, but from
the displeasing wives they live with. They don t seem to seek better women to be with. They stay with
the woman they are unhappy with and use their work as an escape instead. It is possible that they
create their own stress with their own inner issues that they project as the women being the root of it,
pointing the finger away from themselves so they will never have to go through the process improving
themselves. They are unable or unwilling to change or work to improve their lives which, in total,
leave them stuck in an endless unchanging loop much like the rising and setting of the sun. In all,
Louise Gluck s poem Threshing talks about more than the rising and setting of the sun, and the
Picasso painting of the working day ofg these men. The poem implies the connections of the patterns
we keep ourselves in if we aren t open to change and self improvement, and the endlessness of it as
time passes. If we aren t able to find all the little ways to be happier we will always be stuck in a loop
of misery no matter where we are or how many days

In 2003, The Black Eyed Peas released a single titled, Where is the Love? which highlighted specific
issues in the past. Now in 2016, a remix similar towards the hit released 13 years ago appeals to
current issues around the world. Internationally anyone who had access to see the video saw the reality
that many didn t want to uncover back then. It s clear that the message can be picked out even without
viewing the video. The irrefutable acts of discrimination, hypocrisy, greed, violence, and crimes all

with a new single similar to it, individuals are now being informed about the current social issue of
police brutality. The purpose of this song is to highlight police brutality as a social issue, and how it

Belgian Imperialism
Imperialism helped the Belgians discriminate, segregate, brutally torture, and even kill the Congolese
in genocidal proportions worse than the Holocaust, for economic benefit. Imperialism is what let the
Belgians easily seized all control of the Congolese supply of ivory, rubber, and minerals for economic
power and benefit. Because the Congolese did not want to be controlled the Belgians inflicted brutal
control over the people, then after that they started killing them in inhumane ways. The Congolese
also lost most of their own culture, but when the Belgians invaded their country and took over they did
bring religion and education. Overall the Belgians destroyed the Congo because of their greed, and
their past is still remembered today. Imperialism had a vast impact on the Congo s economy. The first

Property Law Servitudes
Dear Madam,
Praedial servitude limited real right
The servitude pertinent to this matter is a praedial servitude, relating to two pieces of land, adjacent to
each other. A paedial servitude is established over the servient property (The Trust) for the benefit of
the dominant property (UCT) in perpetuity. A right of way typically confers a real right to benefit from
the property of another. It affords powers of use and enjoyment to someone other than the owner.
Section 63(1) of the Deeds Registry Act tells us that limited real rights are capable of registration. This
particular right of way, in favour of UCT, is therefore enforceable against the Trust as it appears to
satisfy the requirements for a valid praedial servitude and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The relationship between the dominant and servient owners is governed by the principle of
reasonableness. Where there is a conflict of interests, the interests of the dominant owner will have
precedence over those of the servient owner, subject to the principle of reasonableness. The Holder of
the servitude must exercise the servitude civiliter modo, that is, in a civilized and considerate way.
This does not mean that the dominant owner is restricted in exercising the servitudal rights merely
because to do so would detrimentally affect the servient owner. It follows however that the holder of
the servitude may not increase the burden on the servient property beyond the express or implied
terms of the servitude.
One must therefore examine the rights and obligations that arise from the servitude, as governed by
the aforementioned principle of reasonableness, paying attention to the factors responsible for the
footpath s state of disrepair. In the light of this second contributory factor, should the Trust approach a
court for a declaration of rights, arguing that UCT has failed abide by the principle of civiliter modo,
such a court has the power to enforce specific duties by way of an interdict.

Just Walk On By Brent Staples Analysis
Throughout the course of time, scholars, writers, artists, and others have quested to find their sense of
identity. Identity holds to be one of the most sought after enigmas each being holds within themselves.
It is the idea, hope, or dream that carries one to endless opportunities and limitless possibilities for
oneself. Consequently, with the sense of identity, also comes the sense of being bound. What one often
feels to be their own, the outside world perceives differently, potentially limiting and binding one to
something foreign and false. In the following literary works, each piece voices its claim to identity and
its struggle to rise above the bounds society has set on them.

The Role Of Narcotics Anonymous During The Treatment Of...
The Role of Narcotics Anonymous in the Treatment of Substance Abuse In the 1940s, numerous
efforts to inaugurate self help groups for substance abusers were made throughout America, but failure
prevailed (NAWS 1998, Stone 1997). The self help concept is related directly with the individual s
sense of responsibility (Raftopoulos and Flora, 2011). Kelly and Myers noted studies of private
substance use disorder treatment centers that revealed that 90% based their treatment on the 12 Step
principles, thus aftercare like AA/ NA are warranted to achieve ongoing recovery (Nowinski, Baker
and Carroll, 1995). Narcotics Anonymous like AA, is a free self help group with voluntary
membership that supports life long recovery for those who desire abstinence (NAWS, 2008). Many
hospitals, behavioral health centers, and criminal justice institutions refer those in need to NA because
of the high rate of relapse occurring after formal treatment (Gossop, Stewart, and Marsden, 2007).
Gossop et al. (2007) claims that NA helps the addict sustain the goals accomplished during treatment
and lessens relapse, especially after residential treatment. Many studies of 12 step programs present an
increased rate of abstinence, reduction of use, and psychological health outcomes (Gossop et at.
2007). Gossop and colleagues (2007) found that through a 5 year follow up period those attending
NA/AA after treatment were more likely to be abstinent from opiates. Gossop reports that those who

The Age Of Manufacturing That Preceded The Romantic Movement
The age of manufacturing that preceded the Romantic Movement was characterized by
industrialization and scientific, professional thinking. The philosophy of the era teaches that thoughts
and assertions are only meaningful if they can be confirmed with evidence or valid reasoning. As a
result, any assertion about entities from the abstract or conceptual alike, whether a statement about
mermaids and unicorns or God and nature, is considered meaningless since they cannot be confirmed
by factual report. This all started changing when the future leaders of the enlightenment decided that
we should resort to more emotional thinking. Jean Jacques Rousseau, one of the leaders of the
enlightenment observed that science was transforming Europe into unemotional machines. He says,
Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains...Let us return to nature. (Schaeffer 154) Rousseau
foresaw a threat to general freedom of thought, which thus sparked the Romantic Movement. Two
poets that romanced nature during this era were: William Wordsworth (1770 1850) and John Keats
(1795 1821). To Autumn by John Keats and Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey by
William Wordsworth are both comparable and representative of the Romantic Movement. They have
separate techniques and application, but are both recognized as significant works of Romanticism. The
themes in both poems emphasize nature, emotion, and the capacity for wonder and imagination, which
reiterate the sentiments of the era.

  • 3. Historical Events In Beowulf events in the poem take place in the late 5th century, A.D., after the Anglo Saxons had started their journey to England, and before the beginning of the 7th century, a time when the Anglo Saxon people were either newly arrived or still in close contact with their Germanic kinsmen in Northern Germany. The poem may have been brought to England by people of Geatish origins.[8] It has been suggested that Beowulf was first composed in the 7th century at Rendlesham in East Anglia, as the Sutton Hoo ship burial also shows close connections with Scandinavia, and also that the East Anglian royal dynasty, the Wuffings, may have been descendants of Geatish Wulfings.[9][10] Others have associated this poem with the court of King Alfred, or with the court of King Cnut.[11][pages needed] Ohthere s mound ... The dating of the events in the poem has been confirmed by archaeological excavations of the barrows indicated by Snorri Sturluson and by Swedish tradition as the graves of Ohthere (dated to c. 530) and his son Eadgils (dated to c. 575) in ... • 5. She by H. Rider Haggard and Things Fall Apart by Chinua... How are the roles and representations of females in the texts She by H. Rider Haggard and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe presented? Given two different situations the women are in, the outcome is close to the same. Ayesha in She plays a role she created for herself in the Amahagger community, which can be contrasted with the culture the novel was written in by the author at the time. The women in Things Fall Apart are also as such represented by their culture, and can be compared to the female gender seen by their people as a distinct role. In both, the woman in these texts take on roles and functions of the cultures that they existed inside, which is important to understand why they behave as they do. In the novel She , Ayesha plays a role that she has cultivated for herself as the leader of an isolated culture. She behaves in the way that this kind of leader should, How thinkest thou that I rule this people? I have but a regiment of guards to do my bidding, therefore it is not by force. It is by terror. My empire is a moral one (Haggard 170). She says this to Holly when discussing her harsh punishment to the criminal Amahagger, showing that she has created a culture ruled by terror, and she acts accordingly to that. She will be not swayed to behave differently, since this is the role she holds herself in. Ayesha has come to expect complete submission to her rule, shown when she tries to get Ustane to leave Leo to heal him, saying, Why doth not that woman leave ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Here the viewer(s) see the man along with others struggling against the bitter cold storm. At the peak of the storm the men seemingly give up entirely. The main character shows his strength by defeating ultimately his own paranormal figure. This allows the man to not only help himself, but the other men along with him as well. His choice ultimately saved them all. This idea of choice is shown in the following vignette as well The Tunnel. Here a dog appears to warn the man to stay out of or to stay away from the tunnel. The man walks through the tunnel slowly and cautiously. He gives the illusion that he is looking at something he remembers or his past per se. Reaching the end of the tunnel he is faced with men of his past. He then tells the men about his failed choice to put them into action. Can Air Canada compete against westjet s employee productivity and its relationship with its employees? Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low cost carrier while employing non unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. A labor force in its most basic form, through profit maximizing practices, must be minimized, due to the cost associated with it, in order to drive up profit. And it is because of this outlook that WestJet has managed to outperform their competition, for example Air Canada. This theory is in sync with the findings of Jeffery Pfeffer in his 1995 paper Producing sustainable competitive advantage through the effective management of people. As described above, the organizational culture, the foundation of WestJet s success, is heavily weighted on its people. Where as the competition, sees the workforce as a cost and aims to minimize it, WestJet looks at their work force as an asset and an investment. Conventional airlines run their business as any other company. They look out for the shareholder s best interest and do not pay the slightest attention to their workforce. In WestJet s culture, the workforce consists of the shareholders due to profit sharing and co operative environment. By nature capital managed firms will have a hard time converting to labor managed firm. They will have to change a lot of rules and regulations that governs their everyday operations. They will face a large number of opposition by their shareholders. According to Fernandez Guadano (2009) even if they do manage to adopt similar practices as labor managed firms, they will never be able to achieve the same rate of employee ownership and profit sharing as their counterparts, ... The Problem Of Textbooks Prices During the Spring semester of 2017, I completed my Applied Field Experience in the state s largest student run nonprofit organization, New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG). I worked on the Making Textbooks More Affordable campaign, which addressed the problem of prohibitively high textbooks prices. A survey that involved more than 2,000 college students in 33 states and 156 different campuses finds out that average student spends $1,200 each year on textbooks and supplies alone, which equals to 39 percent of tuition and fees at a community college, and 14 percent of tuition and fees at a four year public university (Bidwell, 2014). Eventually, students still have to endure the excessively high price of textbooks. So, how to reduce the price of textbooks fundamentally should be taken into consideration. NJPIRG came up with the idea of Open and Affordable Textbook (OAT) Project since 2014. They asserted that universities should found the project by letting professors adopting open and free textbooks for their classes, so students can save money on textbooks. Open textbooks are defined as textbooks have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed while download for no cost. These books have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality (Open Textbook Library). Many colleges and universities in America have successful open textbooks program for reference, including the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Kansas State University, Tacoma Community College and the University of Maryland, and so on. After two years of effort, NJPIRG successfully persuade the Rutgers University to launch the OAT Project to protect students interest. In spring 2017, the first cycle of the OAT Project was implemented by Rutgers Library. • 13. Women Should Be Integrated Into Combat Positions Women should be integrated into combat positions such as infantry, artillery, and Special Forces. If a woman chooses this kind of challenge, then she is more than capable. Women are as tough as men. They can do what a man can do, and if that is going into combat then yes, why not? Women can fight, shoot, run, work hard, and win for this country like the men of this country do. Women have been in combat for a long time, but now women are actually in combat rather than helping the men out with injuries, being a laundresses, a cook, and a nurse. Women can go into combat, just like a man. Women should be let onto infantry and artillery positions. Women have been involved in our nation s military since the Revolutionary War, serving not only as nurses and cooks, but also supplying water to thirsty soldiers on the battlefield. Throughout history, men have always fought our battles while women stood by, but what if I told you that in some countries, women are fighting alongside men inside combat zones? Here in the U.S., there is an immeasurable disagreement about equality in the military. One of the supporting arguments is that several other countries outside the U.S. already have women serving on the front lines. Countries such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, all have allowed women to serve in any type combat that they qualify in and or meet requirements. • 14. The Ongoing Issue of Animal Cruelty, Abuse, and Animal... Animal cruelty is an ongoing issue in today s society. When we listen to the news and hear about these animals being starved, beaten, and treated poorly our hearts drop and we get a lump in our throat holding back the tears. We see these animals suffer, we see the pain in their eyes begging for our help, we want to put an end to this but we fail to see the bigger picture. Animal cruelty is a more severe and extreme than we think it is. Animal cruelty just is not owners beating their pets. Animal cruelty is animal testing. Scientist performs experiments on these animals that have no voice, no control, no way to stop what is happening to them. These animals are helpless, innocent creatures that have no idea why this is happening to them. These animals are enduring pain they are being deformed, having body parts mutilated, and many are killed. There are many organizations today such as PETA fighting to improve animal welfare but cruelty still continues. Animal testing needs to be completely banned or modified so the animals do not suffer. Scientific experiments on animals are cruel and unethical. These tests done on animals do not yield positive results that are beneficial to humans. Animal testing has been round since early Greek and Roman civilization. Animal dissection was performed in order to obtain more knowledge of the human anatomy. The Paradox of the revolutionary era was a dilemma that can be viewed as near sighted and far sighted . These were the two different ways of justifying becoming an independent nation. The people who were more far sighted could see the many possibilities the nation held in the future and let this influence their actions in attempt to create a completely independent and free nation. However, the near sighted way was mostly arguing against the authority of Parliament; they were against centralized political powers ruling other areas from faraway places that weren t under its immediate supervision. 3. However, one quality that most teenage girls have is a carelessly open heart; letting anyone in that tries. He may be looking to take advantage of her and wishes to leave her heartbroken. When the partner realizes the girl s despiration, he feels a position of power and can further take advantage of her; body and soul. Through my experience, I hear how girls can be taken advantage of, and move from partner to partner as a reaction. Avoiding a broken heart can be accomplished by having a strong heart that is selective and strives for mutual and balanced commitment. A final reason for a teenage girl to be cautious with her heart is in connection to her self worth. When a girl gets her heart broken, she may feel intense loneliness, or she may look quickly for someone else to love and care for in order to avoid or fill the void of emotional pain. She may start feeling negatively about herself and her body and believe she will never be good enough. This poor self image can lead to severe depression and self harm. Many times, this heartache happens because a girl lets someone into her life without boundaries, or standards and once she realize this, she can feel defeated. For these reasons, having an open heart without using intelligence is a dangerous combination for a teenage girl. As you can see by the reasons above, teenage girls must have intelligence and courage to be successful. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Out of these twelve principles, the two that appear to be the most critical would be the first and third principles, which apply to the training of leaders, managers, and champions on knowledge management principles and creating an environment in which collaboration can occur on the basis of knowledge management. First Principle The first principle that is associated with Knowledge Management is that of training leaders, champions, and managers on being able to incorporate these principles into their actions and decision making. This principle essentially allows the U.S. Army to frame logistics [and other types of] knowledge holistically (Paparone, 2008, p. 39). The knowledge regarding how to manage actual knowledge and information needs to begin somewhere, and education and training appear to be the best place to start in order to create a sound foundation for this knowledge to be build up and constructed further. Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody. For some people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my dad believes that in order to have masculinity he must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks having to do with landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he says something along the lines of I can fix that in a minute or I ve just got to go get the supplies. He then waits until my mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that we did not give him enough time to get it done. My dad, along with my other male friends, feels that since he is a male he needs to prove his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. Wasted Time In High School Emily Sellers Composition 1301 332 Mrs. Kinkead 24 September 2017 Wasted time in High School Public high schools tend to waste a lot of time in class doing things that aren t related to school at all. It has been reported that in many schools, teachers make students do chores for them for extra credit points, while others are learning new things. Jay Mathews wrote A startling waste of precious classroom time, published in 2014 in the Washington Post, and he argues that so much time is wasted in low income schools due to teachers and it makes it very difficult for students to learn in that environment. Mathews begins to establish pathos by stating the names of two girls that go to Compton High School and want to learn, but their school is unable to give them the education they desire. Mathews established ethos a little later in his article by stating facts about programs he has encountered with inner city schools; however, toward the end of his article, he uses facts to establish logos, which is the appeal of logic, while stating that schools have been sued because low income students have not been given the right education. Mathews explains that Wasting time is common in the nation s low income schools. Louis Gluck centers her poem around the simple day in day out lives, that is themselves talk about the way we sometimes refuse to change our own lives, while the poem uses the sun as an element as the endless loop that is life and how we keep it the way it is. Threshing s main element is the sun. In many ways, as you read the poem, you can see that the sun can be seen as the main character in the poem. It dictates the working men s work, their time of relaxing, how long they are alond to feel free during their time or relaxing, when they must go back to their stressful home life and when they must return back to work as though it is an endless in escapable loop ... They don t search for a better way of life even though they drink and are displeased with how their home life is. They seem pleased with their work. It is uncomplicated, like them. They do the physical work, get paid, and go home. The displeasure doesn t come from their working life, but from the displeasing wives they live with. They don t seem to seek better women to be with. They stay with the woman they are unhappy with and use their work as an escape instead. It is possible that they create their own stress with their own inner issues that they project as the women being the root of it, pointing the finger away from themselves so they will never have to go through the process improving themselves. Now in 2016, a remix similar towards the hit released 13 years ago appeals to current issues around the world. Internationally anyone who had access to see the video saw the reality that many didn t want to uncover back then. It s clear that the message can be picked out even without viewing the video. The irrefutable acts of discrimination, hypocrisy, greed, violence, and crimes all trace back to asking where is the love? Emotions evoked light to what officials wanted to bury, and with a new single similar to it, individuals are now being informed about the current social issue of police brutality. The purpose of this song is to highlight police brutality as a social issue, and how it causes problems with racism, violence, and discord. According to Will.I.Am he wrote this song to stimulate a detailed message to any listener who can distinguish right from wrong. The concept of this song proves that the issue has always been around, but there s a trend of it appears more often and no justice being served. A right of way typically confers a real right to benefit from the property of another. It affords powers of use and enjoyment to someone other than the owner. Where there is a conflict of interests, the interests of the dominant owner will have precedence over those of the servient owner, subject to the principle of reasonableness. The Holder of the servitude must exercise the servitude civiliter modo, that is, in a civilized and considerate way. This does not mean that the dominant owner is restricted in exercising the servitudal rights merely because to do so would detrimentally affect the servient owner. It follows however that the holder of the servitude may not increase the burden on the servient property beyond the express or implied terms of the servitude. One must therefore examine the rights and obligations that arise from the servitude, as governed by the aforementioned principle of reasonableness, paying attention to the factors responsible for the footpath s state of disrepair. In the light of this second contributory factor, should the Trust approach a court for a declaration of rights, arguing that UCT has failed abide by the principle of civiliter modo, such a court has the power to enforce specific duties by way of an interdict. ii. • 36. Just Walk On By Brent Staples Analysis Throughout the course of time, scholars, writers, artists, and others have quested to find their sense of identity. Identity holds to be one of the most sought after enigmas each being holds within themselves. It is the idea, hope, or dream that carries one to endless opportunities and limitless possibilities for oneself. Consequently, with the sense of identity, also comes the sense of being bound. What one often feels to be their own, the outside world perceives differently, potentially limiting and binding one to something foreign and false. In the following literary works, each piece voices its claim to identity and its struggle to rise above the bounds society has set on them. It was on the streets of Chicago that Staples had awakened to the truth of what society perceives of him, including other black men in general: a mugger, rapist, or criminal. Staples recalls instances and occasions where his skin color and build have been the sole cause of twisted events, stating, The fearsomeness mistakenly attributed to me in public places often has a perilous flavor. Despite his climb to becoming a well known writer then and is presently today, Staples concludes that no matter how pure or insignificant his intentions are as a black man to night walk or turn a corner, the false images society has burdened him with will continue to linger and accompany him where he goes. • 39. The Role Of Narcotics Anonymous During The Treatment Of... The Role of Narcotics Anonymous in the Treatment of Substance Abuse In the 1940s, numerous efforts to inaugurate self help groups for substance abusers were made throughout America, but failure prevailed (NAWS 1998, Stone 1997). The self help concept is related directly with the individual s sense of responsibility (Raftopoulos and Flora, 2011). Kelly and Myers noted studies of private substance use disorder treatment centers that revealed that 90% based their treatment on the 12 Step principles, thus aftercare like AA/ NA are warranted to achieve ongoing recovery (Nowinski, Baker and Carroll, 1995). Narcotics Anonymous like AA, is a free self help group with voluntary membership that supports life long recovery for those who desire abstinence (NAWS, 2008). Many hospitals, behavioral health centers, and criminal justice institutions refer those in need to NA because of the high rate of relapse occurring after formal treatment (Gossop, Stewart, and Marsden, 2007). Gossop et al. (2007) claims that NA helps the addict sustain the goals accomplished during treatment and lessens relapse, especially after residential treatment. Many studies of 12 step programs present an increased rate of abstinence, reduction of use, and psychological health outcomes (Gossop et at. 2007). Gossop and colleagues (2007) found that through a 5 year follow up period those attending NA/AA after treatment were more likely to be abstinent from opiates. Gossop reports that those who attended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Age Of Manufacturing That Preceded The Romantic Movement The age of manufacturing that preceded the Romantic Movement was characterized by industrialization and scientific, professional thinking. The philosophy of the era teaches that thoughts and assertions are only meaningful if they can be confirmed with evidence or valid reasoning. As a result, any assertion about entities from the abstract or conceptual alike, whether a statement about mermaids and unicorns or God and nature, is considered meaningless since they cannot be confirmed by factual report. This all started changing when the future leaders of the enlightenment decided that we should resort to more emotional thinking. Jean Jacques Rousseau, one of the leaders of the enlightenment observed that science was transforming Europe into unemotional machines. He says, Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains...Let us return to nature. (Schaeffer 154) Rousseau foresaw a threat to general freedom of thought, which thus sparked the Romantic Movement. Two poets that romanced nature during this era were: William Wordsworth (1770 1850) and John Keats (1795 1821). To Autumn by John Keats and Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey by William Wordsworth are both comparable and representative of the Romantic Movement. They have separate techniques and application, but are both recognized as significant works of Romanticism. The themes in both poems emphasize nature, emotion, and the capacity for wonder and imagination, which reiterate the sentiments of the era. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
