Essay about Big Business In The Gilded Age
The late 19th century and early 20th century, dubbed the Gilded Age by writer Mark Twain, was a
time of great growth and change in every aspect of the United States, and even more so for big
business. It was this age that gave birth to many of the important modern business practices we take
for granted today, and those in charge of business at the time were considered revolutionaries, whether
it was for the good of the people or the good of themselves. The exact period of time in which the
Gilded Age occurred is ever debatable, but most historians can at least agree that it started within the
20 years after the Civil War ended and lasted until the early 1920s. (West) The Gilded Age itself was
characterized by the beginnings of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This law forced the railroads to report to the federal government before making important decisions
like how much to charge customers. The railroad companies were outraged and used the defense that
their monopolies were almost automatically formed, but there was nothing they could do since the law
was federal. (Moritz 19 24, 28) Telegraph grids were another technological advancement of the Gilded
Age. For the first time in history, transcontinental communication was possible. People could now find
out about news from across the nation within minutes of it happening, instead of days as it sometimes
took before. Businesses took advantage of this by building plants and factories all across the country,
hiring managers for each individual outfit, and communicating among each location with ease.
(Sinclair 75) Telegraph lines were also a nurturing point for one of the most famous business tycoons
of the Gilded Age, Andrew Carnegie. (Carnegie 653) Carnegie not only got his start as a young Irish
immigrant working as a railroad telegraph operator, his first major corporation was the Keystone
Telegraph Company, in which he acquired the Pacific and Atlantic Telegraph Company. Carnegie
thought of giving up on business after having moderate success, but on a trip to England in 1872, he
met with Henry Bessemer and saw his plans for steel. (Carnegie

The Assassination Of Wwii And The World
On July 20, 1944, a group of high ranking German military officials attempted to carry out one of the
most daring assassination plots in history, which, had it been successful, might have changed the
course of WWII and the world. On that fateful day, a young staff officer, Colonel Claus Schenk Graf
Von Stauffenberg planted a bomb in the Wolfsschanze (Wolf s lair), the Prussian field headquarters of
Third Reich Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, who was meeting with his generals, in an attempt to assassinate him
and bring peace to warring Europe. The conspirators involved in the plot were driven by a patriotic
desire to save Germany from absolute destruction in what had been deemed a hopeless war. Colonel
von Stauffenberg and his cohorts recognized that the only way to achieve this was to take the life of
the Fuhrer, seize control of the government, and then attempt to forge peace with the Western allies.
Despite a meticulously planned coup, a single unforeseen action by one of the attending colonels
destroyed all hopes of negotiating a peaceful resolution of the war and forever changed the course of
history. Hitler survived the bombing attempt, exacting revenge on all those involved, and the war
raged on for one more brutal year. The internal assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944
failed because the plotters, Stauffenberg, Olbricht, Oster, and many others did not consider the
possibility of an adverse result, acting with overzealous confidence, and poor communication

To Tackle Football Analysis
To Tackle Football Death was in the air at the home of The Hurricanes . The confetti was beginning to
settle on the spray painted fields, and so was our laughter as we started to realize the magnitude of the
situation. Carlos might be dead. But that couldn t be, the hit didn t seem that hard considering the
newly designed helmets UM received. They were suppose to be patented to the new NFL guidelines,
so that means visors, padding, concussion indicating mouthguards, the whole package. And no NFL
player has ever died on the field...or that I can think of. With all those improvements, why didn t
Carlos get up? Why did he have to be pulled out in a stretcher with an AED attached to his chest?
Why didn t Carlos live to play another game? Football is one of America s favorite pastime; the
tradition goes: local game Thursday night after work, then Sunday night the family gathers around the
TV with finger food for a round of jubilating cheers and cries. Almost anyone can play football from
boys to girls, young to elders. It s been around since War World 2, a time where players were scarce

The Structure of Biblical Authority
In his book, Structure of Biblical Authority, Meredith Kline explains, describes, and defends the
suzerain vassal paradigm of the biblical covenant and canon of Scripture. Scripture s authority,
according to Kline is not merely related to its ontology (that God has spoken it); but in its basic
economic form, Scripture is a covenantal document and therefore is authoritative. It is through this
covenant that God binds himself to his covenant people and they to him. As our covenant suzerain,
God sovereignly rules his vassals with covenant stipulations.
Part One
In chapter one, Formal Origins of Biblical Canon, Kline shows how the origin of the Old Testament
canon, coincided with the founding of Israel at the establishment of the covenant at ... Show more

Rather, as Kline shows, they are two identical tablets; one was for the suzerain, the other for the
people. Such is the nature of a covenant. Jesus summary of the law into two commands was not to
distinguish to separable areas of life, but two complementary aspects of our responsibility.
In chapter two, Dynastic Covenant, Kline answers several errant views of the nature and meaning of
Deuteronomy. Kline shows that the basic structure of the book is actually covenantal: preamble (1:1
5), prologue (1:6 4:49), stipulations (5 26), curses and blessings (27 30), and succession arrangements
(31 34).
The intrusion is Kline s address chapter three, The Intrusion and the Decalogue. Due to the Fall, we
must await the consummation during which even creation groans and travails in birth pains. Yet there
is an intrusion of the is consummation which breaks through beforehand. This is easily seen in Christ
and the Spirit in the New Testament, but what about the Old? This intrusion has realized eschatology
at its very core, in its symbolism we may see the already not yet . There is in the Old Testament an
anticipation of the ethics of the world to come. Understanding this will aid in keeping us from
assuming God s prerogative to abrogate the principle of common grace. Kline discusses how this

Basic Equivalent Of The Border
Professor Gardner, I combined my answers for question 1 and 3 due to they support each other.
* What is the Fourth amendment exception as it pertains to border searches? Describe the functional
equivalent of the border? Although the Fourth Amendment protects citizen rights against unlawful
searches while it also identifies the specific criteria where probable cause is required, the Supreme
Court supports certain circumstances where an exception to policy comes into play. The exception s
under border searches grants permission for authorities the sovereign right to stop and inspect people
and their property entering into the country without contacting a magistrate, and having to obtain a
search warrant before the search, , (Kim, 2009, p.1). Even though searches for contraband are
conducted at the physical location of the border where physical barriers and control points are
established, the border searches may be carried out at locations other than at the border itself. Kim
identifies two lawful concepts of authorized searches; searches at the functional equivalent of the
border and extended border searches. Functional equivalent of the border (FEB) is the physical
location, usually the initial practical location where people entering the country are temporarily
detained and questioned after crossing the initial border or point of entry. Prime examples include
international airports, sea ports within the country s territorial waters, and facilities located at the

Dragons In J. R. Tolkien s The Hobbit
What does the word dragon mean to us? Generally, if one is asked this question, the response would
be unintelligent dangerous weapons of destruction . However, this is not the case in J.R.R Tolkien s
The Hobbit , nor is it true for the early mythology of dragons. Instead, this modern definition is
replaced with one of, greedy, intelligent beings with human characteristics . Hence, a question arises
as to why the image of dragons has been drastically downgraded throughout literature? To answer this
question, I will first begin by isolating passages from Tolkien s The Hobbit in an attempt to describe
certain features of Smaug the magnificent. Afterwards, I will partake in exemplifying the written style
of dragons in the history of literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Traditional dragons were portrayed when the certain writers have been able to preserve the wonder of
the creatures. Whereas, modern dragons are illustrated when select stories have implemented new
components that have served as counter productive as depicted by the Harry Potter series which
relegates the true plot potential of these beasts. Additionally, these modern dragons tend to be
obstacles for the main hero to overcome, which is a stark contrast from the traditional dragons.
Therefore, for what reason have writers decided to downgrade the beasts? Unerman (2002) puts forth
the belief that fictional evil is more convincing and more frightening when people, not dragons, are
the true enemy (pg. 100). In addition, another argument could be made in that dragons such as Smaug
will overshadow the main human villain, therefore, by downgrading the beasts to simple plot
obstacles, it allows for the dragons not to overshadow the main villain, and I cannot accept either
argument. Suggesting that humanity allows for more engaging villains is absurd, considering that the
simple task of personifying a dragon in Smaug made for one of the greatest, psychologically
complicated, and utmost captivating villain in all of literature. Nonetheless, one may argue that
Tolkien s Smaug serves as the same purpose as a dragon in the Harry Potter series; a plot obstacle that
cause destruction. Granted that this notion may appear plausible, it proves false in terms of
characteristics of the dragons individually. In other words, the dragon in Harry Potter happens to be
illustrated as regular animal that features no unique qualities, whereas Smaug is categorized as a
complex and unique character, in terms of his motives, intelligence, and the threat he poses to those
who dare challenge

Analysis Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Signed Into Law
Following his election in 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law something radical for its
time: The Social Security Act. This act changed America s economic landscape completely, by
minimizing the long existing problem of retirees and the elderly living below the poverty line. Simply
put, Social Security is a way to guarantee that older people, namely retirees, have at least a minimal
source of income in their later years, by providing around 40 percent of the average person s yearly
income. Social Security both is and functions as a defined benefit plan, wherein benefits are decided
by the amount of quarters than a person works, and are decided by a sliding scale with caps (United
States). As directed by the sliding scale, per dollar benefits are much higher for people of lower
incomes, while overall benefit amounts are higher for those of higher incomes (Benefit). Both the
scale and the caps are adjusted yearly according to inflation. Social Security accumulates its funds into
a trust fund, and puts excess money into investments in US Treasury Securities, where interest is
accumulated and put back into the fund. Social Security s benefits are not affected by the investments.
Since 1982, the Social Security trust fund has experienced a net increase and in 2015, the asset
reserves sit at 2.8 trillion dollars (Financial). Despite this, the misinformed often point their fingers at
the trust fund and claim that it is on its last leg, and will soon run out. Every few

1984 Book Essay
1984 Essay What do you think a normal human being needs to have a good, hearty life? What are the
most basic needs that are vital to one s survival? According to Maslow s hierarchy of needs,
physiological needs are those required to sustain life, such as air, water, nourishment, and sleep. If
such needs are not satisfied, then one s motivation will arise from the quest to satisfy them. Higher
needs such as social needs and esteem are not felt until one has met the needs basic to one s bodily
functioning. Beyond the details of air, water, food, and sex, Maslow laid out five broader layers: the
physiological needs, the needs for safety and security, the needs for love and belonging, the needs for

water, air, exercise, etc. Winston gets sufficient amount of food to fill him up. However, the food is not
very satisfying. When Winston was at the grille eating with Syme, Winston had taken up his spoon

the physical texture of life. Had it always been like this? Had food always tasted like this? He looked
around the canteen. A low ceilinged crowded room...bent spoons, dented trays, coarse white mugs; all
surfaces greasy grime in every crack; and a sourish, composite smell of bad gin and bad coffee and
metallic stew... (Orwell 52). This shows that Winston is not in a state of hunger, implying that he has
enough food to keep him alive. But even though Winston has enough food to sustain his existence, the
food he gets to eat is very unpleasant and distasteful. Furthermore, Winston s physiological needs are
not quite met through the morning workouts, known as the physical jerks. The telescreen wakes

Abstract

how these incredible and resilient people fought to succeed it a world that seemed to hold the odds
against them. The culture, beliefs, and challenges of Vietnamese people are a precise paradigm of their
strength and perseverance.
Unfortunately, Vietnamese Americans make up only a small percent of the total American Population
today. There are many stereotypes associated with the Vietnamese, but the truth is, we really know
very little about their culture. After the Viet Nam War, many Vietnamese citizens immigrated to the
United States to escape political Prosecution and poverty. Faced with a variety of obstacles and ...

The act was implemented in 1989 and called The Vietnamese Amerasian Homecoming Act.
Amerasian is a term used to describe children of Vietnamese mothers and American fathers (or vice
versa). Enabling approximately 25,000 Amerasian children into the country with their immediate
families, the act allowed over 77,000 Vietnamese immigrants into the United States. Overall, between
1981 and 2000, over 531,000 Vietnamese citizens, voluntarily immigrated to the United States and
were accepted. Although the United States progressively allowed more Vietnamese immigrants into
the country, if there were never limits to the number of legal refuges, tens of thousands of lives may
have been spared.
Currently, the United States continues to limit the number of immigrants permitted to enter the
country. Politicians are even trying to upgrade the charge to a felony offense if immigrants are caught
entering the United Sates illegally. The interesting part of this phenomenon is that the only people who
are native to America are the Native American Indians. Other than that, everyone s family had
immigrated to America at some point. Having said that, maybe we should be more forthcoming when
trying to pass a law by stating that now, since our family is already here, we should start to limit the
number of new immigrants that enter. I find the hypocrisy of our government to somewhat
overwhelming.

European Aggressor In The 1000 s
Throughout most of the 1000 s, Europe was the creator of science and art movements, and the pioneer
of the industrial revolution, leading the world into a new modern age. Europe s advancements in the
past centuries certainly had great benefits for the world, but Europe was not perfect; in fact, it was far
from it. Although Europe was one of the worlds greatest advancers, It was also one of the worlds
greatest aggressors. Europe was responsible for the transatlantic slave trade, colonizing nearly the
entirety of Africa, and the two World Wars. So this dilema begs the question, was Europe the visionary
innovator, or the harmful aggressor in the 1000 s?
Many may argue that Europe s involvement in slavery and the building of colonial empires makes
them the sole aggressor of the entirety of the 1000 s. People who say this do have a good point.
Europe was heavily involved in the slave trade, according to The Abolition Project, Estimates, based
on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance records, put the total
number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12 million people (The Abolition
Project). Undoubtedly, slavery is one of the most evil actions in history, so obviously Europe is an
aggressor for its major involvement in it. Europe not only participated in the slave trade, It was the
biggest proponents of it; it was responsible for the displacement of at least 12 million people. Europe,
knowing full well how the slaves would be treated, took them away from their homeland to suffer

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Virtual Teams
Do virtual teams experience the stages of development?
When Bruce Tuckman presented his initial theory for group development in 1965, he couldn t have
possibly imagined a world dotted with virtual teams. Tuckman s framework for evaluating teamwork
using the stages of forming, storming, norming and performing was created after a study of a variety
of face to face teams. As a testimony to his work, it is generally accepted that Tuckman s premise
about groups experiencing definitive stages toward formation, also applies to groups of people who
don t share physical space and span time zones. There is some thought that the storming stage is
integrated into the other stages or skipped entirely. (Berry, 2011). The lack of defined storming might
be due to virtual teams having more of a task versus personality orientation and having a well defined
communication plan also serving as a proactive conflict management measure.
Also, there is a shared opinion that well planned formation activities are critically important for a
virtual team. At the top of the list is training on the technology and related communication systems to
be used. (Berry, 2011).
The importance of trust in any team
There is agreement across the board of teamwork experts on the importance of trust in a team setting.
If a team wants to succeed, the presence of trust must be welcomed, nurtured and maintained. There is
also a majority shared opinion that trust building takes time, but it can be accelerated with

Next Day Poem
My Literary Analysis of Next Day by Randall Jarrell Mirror, mirror, on the WOE where did my youth,
dreams, and beauty go? To some, this may sound like just a clever play on words, sprinkled with a
dash of Disney fairy dust fantasy, but to many, this could be a heavy, real life question people ask
themselves frequently. In this poem: The author uses a female persona to examine, from a woman s
point of view, the sense of the futility of ordinary life... thinking about her life as it was as a young
woman when she was beautiful, and how it is currently, when she is aging and no longer attractive.
She cannot quite understand what happened... The poem is narrated in the present tense and follows

She starts off by reflecting on a funeral of a recently deceased friend she attended the day before.
While she stood there looking at her dead friend s body, or more precisely, her deceased friend s cold

while thinking of her friend, she hears her friend s voice telling her how young she seems, and that she
s exceptional (Jarrell par. 9 10). She then thinks of her own life; what she has; what she s done; but
none of it makes her feel any better or exceptional in any way. Realizing even though she has what so
many would want a husband, grown children, wealth she really has nothing, for only death is awaiting
her (Kellman 1). These thoughts only make her feel worse, and even more deeply depressed. She
eventually arrives at an and even deeper and darker place, and realizes she is confused, ordinary, and
alone (Jarrell par. 10). Unfortunately, in her cluttered mind, death may be the only answer for her

Causes Of Knife Crime Essay
Most London knife crimes are no longer gang related, police say was an article written for The

people are increasingly carrying knives for protection. Knife crimes in London have risen by 16% in

Collaborative Learning As A Teacher Student Relationship
Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning is a situation in which learners attempt to learn together. The people involved
in collaborative learning capitalize on one another s skills and resources. Under these circumstances,
they share information, monitor each other s work, and evaluate ideas together. Each participant is
accountable to the rest of the learners (Bruffee 636). The learning can be online, chart rooms, or face
to face, and may involve group projects, collaborative writing, debates, joint problem solving, and
study teams (Bruffee 638). In essence, collaborative learning redefines the traditional learning

Collaboration can be used in various situations to enhance a student s ability to learn. One way in
which collaborative learning can be used is in group projects. Group projects help learners develop
skills that are increasingly important in the professional world. Positive group projects enhance
students learning, retention, and success of the entire group and school (Bruffee 640). Working on a

The Medieval Feudalism System
Feudalism is a relationship between a lord and his vassals to provide service and resources for each
other. The feudal system emerge as dominant political and social system in medieval Europe, because
it provided the vassals with security by their lords.
In one instance, The fiscal burdens of feudalism took any form deemed suitable by the lords:
payments in cash, in kind, in labor services, or in military services (Goldsmith). After the Vikings
raided many homes and cities, many people didn t have much money to protect themselves. To ensure
protection, they find lords who are able to protect them. In return, the vassals do military service, pay
taxes, and do labor for their lords. However, while the lower class are working hard to benefit the
king, they don t gain anything from the king or their lords. For example, if the king needed knights to

Roman Military Tactics Essay
Roman Military Life Tactics By: Nathanael Delivuk The Roman army was very skilled in sieges,
fighting styles/fighting formations and marching orders. Some of these tactics are still used widely
today by the US army. But what made all of these tactics so useful to a modern army,? Kkeep reading
to find out. In ancient warfare open battles were commonly used but sometimes the defender took a
stand in a well fortified city. Whenever an army decided to siege their enemies it took a lot of money,
time, and men, so it was the least used option to attack an enemy. The Romans through time copied
and improved the artillery weapons used by the Greeks, but they didn t use them in open combat. ,
Iinstead they were reserved for siege warfare in order to pound the fortifications of cities and strike
terror into the defenders. Instead of using horsehair for their siege engines they used animal sinews( a
piece of tissue that holds the bones together) which were stronger and could throw rocks farther and
with more power. The Romans were a little slow to employ the towers that the Hellenistic kingdoms
had perfected. They made changes, making their own towers smaller and more manoeuvrable. The
towers also became more useful carrying weapons in them. The Romans added battering rams, a
boarding bridge, and fighting platforms which could carry both men and artillery. Towers had wheels
so that they could be constructed at a safe distance from the city and then moved closer

Similarities And Differences Between Mesopotamia And...
Civilizations are radical states of human society that include a high level of culture, morals,
knowledge, manufacturing, and government. Mesopotamia was one of the most astounding
civilizations that anyone discovered. The location of this nation fell right in between the Tigris and
Euphrates Rivers, where modern day Iraq is located. It was positioned right along the fertile crescent .
Because of this, the soil was very rich which caused great agriculture. It was one of the first
cultivations to roam the earth. Mesopotamia had many phases, which included the Ubaid, Uruk,
Jemdat Nasr, Early Dynastic, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Persian period. Every stage had
their own unique trait. Something new and exciting happened for each era. During 4300 BCE, the late
Ubaid period in Mesopotamia began. Many events and actions took place during this time.
Mesopotamia was an outstanding region and contained many treasures, including pottery, inventions,
architecture, and Ziggurats. Civilizations are created and formed all over the world. What we see as
normal can be seen as a total obscenity in another. A strong society is always required in order for
each group to become successful. The ability to survive is the main key to acquiring a successful

Lucasville prison riot Essay
Around 3:00 pm on Sunday April 11, 1993 a riot started when prisoners returning from recreation time
attacked prison guards in cell block L. The guards held the keys to the entire cell block and it did not
take long for the prisoners to take full advantage of the keys. Four beaten guards were released within
hours of the attack but 8 were retained. The riot was started for many reasons but the most obvious
reason was TB testing on Muslims, they do not believe in using needles to take blood or for injections.
Soon after the take over of the cell block Warren Tate shut off the power and water in the cell block. A
Death Squad was formed in the beginning hours of the riot and black prisoners killed 5 white inmates.

A lot of what the public thinks about the riot is most likely false information. One reporter said that
172 inmate bodies were piled up inside the prison, when only 11 died.
The reporters did not help the negotiations at all. Inmates with battery powered TV s were able to see
sharpshooters position themselves on the roofs. Some negotiators believe the riot could have ended
hours after it had started when prisoners tried to negotiate using bullhorns but could not because of
helicopters hovering so low. The media wasn t always a bad thing though one reporter was able to
exchange a hostage to allow an inmate some air time.
When the riot started the guards went into small rooms called safe wells. The rooms were made out of
2 layers of block and had steel reinforced doors. The doors did their job but the prisoners started to
beat at the block walls with weight lifting bars. Soon they busted a hole into the room and dragged the
guards through the walls. The guards were assigned men to watch them; these men were ordered to
kill the guards if the prison came under attack. A few of the guards were protected very well because
they affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood. These few lucky guards were even given weapons to
defend themselves incase of a race riot within the prison.

congenital disease characterized by the partial or complete fusion of the patient s legs and feet, giving
it the appearance of a mermaid s tail from Greek mythology. The degree of severity can vary widely
from person to person, in some cases the affected infant has only one femur while in others they have
two femurs pushed together into one sealed shaft of skin. Infants affected may have one foot, both

Researchers believe that several environmental and genetic factors work together and play a role in the
development of Sirenomelia. The most popular medical theory suggests that Sirenomelia could be
caused by abnormalities in the blood circulating system within the embryo at an early stage of
development. Some affected individuals have been found to have a single large artery followed by the
absence of the usual two arteries that branch out to lower areas and carry blood to the tail end of the
embryo. The single artery that is present, which is referred to as a steal vessel due to the fact that it
essentially steals blood and nutrients from the lower part of the body, diverts the flow of blood that
normally circulates from the aorta to the lower portion of the embryo back up to the placenta instead
so the blood and nutrients that are needed never end up reaching the tail end of the embryo. Due to the
malnutrition from this lack of blood flow, the fetus fails to develop two separate limbs. (National
Organization for Rare Disorders, 2018) There is still much to learn about what causes Sirenomelia
since there is so little known about it currently. When experimenting with

Watching A Disappearing Number in Theater Essay examples

A Disappearing Number
I went to see a Disappearing Number, in the Theater. The production was performed by Complicite
and was directed by Simon McBurney. I really enjoyed this performance. I thought that the mixture of
maths and romance as well as the structure of the performance by incorporating the past and the
present together, was extremely successful.
The most successful aspect of the performance for me were the scene changes. I found that the

Another really effective aspect to the performance was the use of technology, including sound effects,
projections, pod casts and voice overs. The scene which stood out most for me, concerning technology
would be the scene where Al is trapped in the lecture theatre. Here, he begins to look through Ruth?s
belongings of books, papers and passports. While he is doing this, actions too small to be seen from
the audience, a live streaming is being projected up onto the whiteboard behind to show us, as the
audience, what he is looking at. Al starts to read a page from a book which has been marked down and
as he starts to read a voice over starts reading the same words, quietly at first and as that gradually
builds up in volume, Al?s voice decreases in volume till its just the voice over reading out the words
from the book. This is one of the first links to the past, a key theme in the performance, as the voice
over is the voice of G H Hardy, the great mathematician reading from his own book.
We were introduced to the performance by the character Ruth giving a maths lecture, simple at first
but then getting extremely difficult to follow, going off on a tangent, using mathematical terminology
I had never even heard of. This maths theme carried on throughout the whole performance, making it,
from my point of view, the strongest link from the present to the past, as Ruth was wanting to follow
in the footsteps of Ramanujan and Hardy.

In my opinion, gender roles are being challenged today to a certain degree, but in order for us to
become more open minded, it is imperative to find a central path between the two extremes. While it
is important for us to maintain our physiological differences and fulfill certain individual
responsibilities, it is equally important for women to assume more significant roles outside the
household and to realize their full potential.
No Exit, by Jean Paul Satre follows three characters who have been condemned to hell , for the evil
deeds committed by them. Here, Satre has represented hell, not in its biblical or Christian sense, where
the sinners and transgressors are tortured, but as a room, with no windows and only one door, and
where the inhabitants are left alone with their thoughts and the other persons that reside therein.
As the play unfolds, the audience is made aware of the sins committed by the individuals that have
caused them to be here, including adultery, murder and cowardice. Through this explication, the
author has showed us the differing gender roles adopted by men and women but more importantly
how certain individuals will tend to deviate from these norms. Though the expected norm is for a man
to be brave and fearless, Joseph Garcin is a coward and refuses to accept his responsibilities, made

While there are many more specific purposes in the Gospel of Luke, the overall purpose is a defense
of the Christian faith, useful for both evangelism and discipleship. Luke is an eloquent Gospel that
provided valuable information about the faith for the believers in the church that are still as applicable
today in the twenty first century. A primary purpose in the Gospel of Luke is to tell of the miraculous
conception, birth, and childhood of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke is the only Gospel (besides
Matthew) that focuses on the birth and virginal conception of Christ. The Gospels of Mark and John
give no information regarding the conception and birth of Christ; the first mention of Christ in these

mankind. These poems contain instances of power between nature and mankind. In order to create the

one is no better than the other. They both have equivalent problems and feelings. The relationship of
power between nature and human beings is influenced by tone, mood, and form. Humans and nature

Both Plato and Socrates seen philosophy not as an occupation, but a way of life. Socrates believed
there were different kind of lives to live, the unexamined and the examined. The unexamined life
focused on material things. Such as, wealth, power, possessions and the wants of the body. The
examined life chases truth, justice, betterment of the city and lasting things. In the examined life, the
soul is the most important thing. To Socrates, a life filled with chasing after material things, the
unexamined life, is not worth living. Socrates is seen as the image of an examined life. He lived and
died justly and chose to further his examined life even if it meant he would be put to death. Socrates
also believed that we should not fear death.

Religion In Elizabeth Gaskell s Mary Barton
Religion plays a huge role throughout Elizabeth Gaskell s Mary Barton. The significance of religion is

noble hero fighting for the working class, despite going through numerous sufferings throughout his

has fallen from grace. This paper will examine the effects of religion in the downfall of John Barton

It is not to say that he wasn t concerned with the issue from the beginning. Even before his wife s
death, when Esther went missing, John told his good friend Wilson about how the rich had never done
anything for him or his family, he questioned, What good have they ever done me that I should like
them? If I am sick, do they come and nurse me? and pointed out the problems of the rich and poor, We
re their slaves as long as we can work; we pile up their fortunes with the sweat of our brows; and yet

The Danger of Nuclear Weapons versus the Necessity of...
Nuclear weapons continue to present a real threat to humanity and other life on Earth. Scholars of
international relations and policymakers share in the belief that the sheer power and destructiveness of
nuclear weapons prevent them from being used by friends and foes alike. Then the real question
becomes; what is the need for nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons are defined as, volatile device that
originates its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission and
fusion. Both reactions release massive amounts of energy from fairly small amounts of matter.
Nuclear weapons have greatly changed the way war is fought. Along with these more dominant
weapons come ways to control and countermeasure such power. ... Show more content on

So this then is the dilemma: directly and indirectly, both strength and weakness of a county can upset
the balance of security and the status quo in international relations. With the development of nuclear
weapons becoming more and more common, could lead to countries wanting to achieve an advantage
over other. Syria s recent development and controversial testing of biological weapons being a perfect
example. This then begins a never ending cycle for power. This can possibly lead to countries getting
rid of the competition. Luckily no country wants to be the first to start a nuclear holocaust. I am in
favor of both nuclear disarmament and stricter nuclear arms control. It s hard to trust so much power
in the hands of mere man. I am in favor of nuclear energy because of the reliability a few tons of
radioactive can produce the same amount of energy as hundreds of tons of coal, fossil fuels or natural
gas. So significantly less energy is expended on its transport to reactors. Also there is an increase in
efficiency when it comes to the usage of nuclear energy. Small amounts can give power to city for a
longer period of time in comparison to other convention energy sources. However in my mind the
negative aspects outweigh the positive benefits. Nuclear weapons aren t very precise weapons; they do
not attack the desired party. However nuclear weapons are destructive forces that annihilate anything
within the blast radius. Unlike conventional weapons,

Tenet Healthcare Case Study
In the early history, Tenet Healthcare originated from a company named American Medical
International (AMI), which was purchased by National Medical Enterprises (NME) in 1995. Between
the 1970s through 1985, NME grew its presence by focusing on acute care facilities and specialty
facilities, such as nursing homes, substance abuse facilities, rehabilitation services and psychiatric
hospitals. In fact, about 40% of NME s $587 million of operating profits were generated from
psychiatric hospitals. However, NME was sued for fraudulent overbilling in the early 1990 s.
Subsequently, NME pled guilty to the charges and had to sell all of its psychiatric facilities. NME
changed its name to Tenet after acquiring AMI and refocused to specialize on only acute care hospital
operations. Hence, Tenet grew from 70 hospitals in 1995 to 144 hospitals in Southern ... Show more

Vanguard acquisition in 2014 has resulted in 23% increase in revenue and 13% increase in EBITDA.
In addition, Tenet s payers mix indicated that 33.2% of the revenue came from Medicare and Managed
Medicare, 17.6 % from Medicaid and Managed Medicaid, 37.2% from private insurers, 6.8% from
self paid and 5.2% from other sources and managed exchange. The highest revenue generating states
in 2014 came from the Central Region States (18.1%), and the highest revenue generating service
lines in 2014 were general surgery (9.1%), gastrointestinal medicine (8.6%) and cardiovascular
medicine (7.3%). In terms of opportunity, Tenet entered a joint venture with John Muir Health in 2013
to gain market share and to improve patient care coordination in San Francisco Bay area. On the other
hand, patients started to choose to have their complex procedures done in outpatient facilities instead
of in acute care hospitals due to increased cost sharing, and more

The system has been focusing that its customers will have a complete satisfaction when it comes to
layout and construction.
Nypro Inc is a market driven company and thus the company will have to put much focus on the
market and allowing the market to see the company is in the process of making its services and
product more satisfactory to needs of the consumer. The efficiency of the implementation of navoplast
system hinges on the fact that it is a solution to make Nypro competitive. Competitiveness was not
only being against other manufacturing companies but against the company itself to improve the real
potential and the capabilities of Nypro Inc as its answer of technology.
One of the main issues that Nypro faces is how to compete in the future. Nypro has created a system
where it is able to capitalize on its current market through its various innovation and alliances with
their current customers. Nypro s competitors started being competitive by able to duplicate their
processes .Nypro should not only focus on quality and innovation but should keep a check on demand
and demanding speed. Nypro with its current equipment may not have the necessary flexibility
demanded by the market; it does not allow rapid prototyping. Nypro has an issue to decide how
effectively to utilize the recurrent demands of the market.

Essay On Neuropathic Pain
Introduction
It is estimated that some 28 million people in the UK suffer from some form of chronic pain ranging
from lower back pain to osteoarthritis and as such this accounts for 45 million days of work lost each
year, the cost of chronic back pain to the NHS alone is £5 billion a year. This poses both massive
social and economic concerns and creates the question: why hasn t anything been done to counteract
this?
However, when one looks further into the matter, the desire to answer such a question is certainly
present. As a 9 5 society we have a certain inclination to fix any problem that may impede this work
ethic and yet despite the large sums of money that the NHS spends each year, two treatment options
seem to spell the end to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Visceral pain is pain caused by visceral nociceptors which are present in deeper structures such as
organs and internal cavities. Nociceptors in these areas are more scarce and highly sensitive to
distension, ischemia and inflammation but insensitive to other stimuli such as cuts or burns. Thus, the
pain produced in these areas is usually that of aching or cramping and will last for a greater period
than that of somatic pain.
Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is a type of pain caused by a problem with one or more of the nerves themselves.
This causes them to falsely send electrical signals and stimulate pain that may not be there. Symptoms
of which can be excruciating pain, pins and needles and numbness, which can cause the patient to
become extremely sensitive to even slight pressures in the affected area.
This may be caused by nerve pressure or damage, after surgery or trauma, viral infections, cancer,
vascular malformations, alcoholism, neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and metabolic
conditions such as diabetes. Sometimes, there is no identifiable cause for the pain experienced and this
can be very distressing for the patient in question.

  • 2. Essay about Big Business In The Gilded Age The late 19th century and early 20th century, dubbed the Gilded Age by writer Mark Twain, was a time of great growth and change in every aspect of the United States, and even more so for big business. It was this age that gave birth to many of the important modern business practices we take for granted today, and those in charge of business at the time were considered revolutionaries, whether it was for the good of the people or the good of themselves. The exact period of time in which the Gilded Age occurred is ever debatable, but most historians can at least agree that it started within the 20 years after the Civil War ended and lasted until the early 1920s. This law forced the railroads to report to the federal government before making important decisions like how much to charge customers. The railroad companies were outraged and used the defense that their monopolies were almost automatically formed, but there was nothing they could do since the law was federal. (Moritz 19 24, 28) Telegraph grids were another technological advancement of the Gilded Age. For the first time in history, transcontinental communication was possible. People could now find out about news from across the nation within minutes of it happening, instead of days as it sometimes took before. Businesses took advantage of this by building plants and factories all across the country, hiring managers for each individual outfit, and communicating among each location with ease. (Sinclair 75) Telegraph lines were also a nurturing point for one of the most famous business tycoons of the Gilded Age, Andrew Carnegie. (Carnegie 653) Carnegie not only got his start as a young Irish immigrant working as a railroad telegraph operator, his first major corporation was the Keystone Telegraph Company, in which he acquired the Pacific and Atlantic Telegraph Company. Carnegie thought of giving up on business after having moderate success, but on a trip to England in 1872, he met with Henry Bessemer and saw his plans for steel. (Carnegie ... • 3. The Assassination Of Wwii And The World On July 20, 1944, a group of high ranking German military officials attempted to carry out one of the most daring assassination plots in history, which, had it been successful, might have changed the course of WWII and the world. On that fateful day, a young staff officer, Colonel Claus Schenk Graf Von Stauffenberg planted a bomb in the Wolfsschanze (Wolf s lair), the Prussian field headquarters of Third Reich Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, who was meeting with his generals, in an attempt to assassinate him and bring peace to warring Europe. The conspirators involved in the plot were driven by a patriotic desire to save Germany from absolute destruction in what had been deemed a hopeless war. Colonel von Stauffenberg and his cohorts recognized that the only way to achieve this was to take the life of the Fuhrer, seize control of the government, and then attempt to forge peace with the Western allies. Despite a meticulously planned coup, a single unforeseen action by one of the attending colonels destroyed all hopes of negotiating a peaceful resolution of the war and forever changed the course of history. Hitler survived the bombing attempt, exacting revenge on all those involved, and the war raged on for one more brutal year. The internal assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 failed because the plotters, Stauffenberg, Olbricht, Oster, and many others did not consider the possibility of an adverse result, acting with overzealous confidence, and poor communication ... • 5. The Structure of Biblical Authority In his book, Structure of Biblical Authority, Meredith Kline explains, describes, and defends the suzerain vassal paradigm of the biblical covenant and canon of Scripture. Scripture s authority, according to Kline is not merely related to its ontology (that God has spoken it); but in its basic economic form, Scripture is a covenantal document and therefore is authoritative. It is through this covenant that God binds himself to his covenant people and they to him. As our covenant suzerain, God sovereignly rules his vassals with covenant stipulations. In chapter two, Dynastic Covenant, Kline answers several errant views of the nature and meaning of Deuteronomy. Describe the functional equivalent of the border? Although the Fourth Amendment protects citizen rights against unlawful searches while it also identifies the specific criteria where probable cause is required, the Supreme Court supports certain circumstances where an exception to policy comes into play. The exception s under border searches grants permission for authorities the sovereign right to stop and inspect people and their property entering into the country without contacting a magistrate, and having to obtain a search warrant before the search, , (Kim, 2009, p.1). Even though searches for contraband are conducted at the physical location of the border where physical barriers and control points are established, the border searches may be carried out at locations other than at the border itself. Kim identifies two lawful concepts of authorized searches; searches at the functional equivalent of the border and extended border searches. Functional equivalent of the border (FEB) is the physical location, usually the initial practical location where people entering the country are temporarily detained and questioned after crossing the initial border or point of entry. • 8. Dragons In J. R. Tolkien s The Hobbit What does the word dragon mean to us? Generally, if one is asked this question, the response would be unintelligent dangerous weapons of destruction . However, this is not the case in J.R.R Tolkien s The Hobbit , nor is it true for the early mythology of dragons. Instead, this modern definition is replaced with one of, greedy, intelligent beings with human characteristics . Hence, a question arises as to why the image of dragons has been drastically downgraded throughout literature? Traditional dragons were portrayed when the certain writers have been able to preserve the wonder of the creatures. Whereas, modern dragons are illustrated when select stories have implemented new components that have served as counter productive as depicted by the Harry Potter series which relegates the true plot potential of these beasts. Additionally, these modern dragons tend to be obstacles for the main hero to overcome, which is a stark contrast from the traditional dragons. Therefore, for what reason have writers decided to downgrade the beasts? Unerman (2002) puts forth the belief that fictional evil is more convincing and more frightening when people, not dragons, are the true enemy (pg. 100). In addition, another argument could be made in that dragons such as Smaug will overshadow the main human villain, therefore, by downgrading the beasts to simple plot obstacles, it allows for the dragons not to overshadow the main villain, and I cannot accept either argument. Suggesting that humanity allows for more engaging villains is absurd, considering that the simple task of personifying a dragon in Smaug made for one of the greatest, psychologically complicated, and utmost captivating villain in all of literature. Nonetheless, one may argue that Tolkien s Smaug serves as the same purpose as a dragon in the Harry Potter series; a plot obstacle that cause destruction. Granted that this notion may appear plausible, it proves false in terms of characteristics of the dragons individually. In other words, the dragon in Harry Potter happens to be illustrated as regular animal that features no unique qualities, whereas Smaug is categorized as a complex and unique character, in terms of his motives, intelligence, and the threat he poses to those who dare challenge ... This act changed America s economic landscape completely, by minimizing the long existing problem of retirees and the elderly living below the poverty line. Simply put, Social Security is a way to guarantee that older people, namely retirees, have at least a minimal source of income in their later years, by providing around 40 percent of the average person s yearly income. Social Security both is and functions as a defined benefit plan, wherein benefits are decided by the amount of quarters than a person works, and are decided by a sliding scale with caps (United States). As directed by the sliding scale, per dollar benefits are much higher for people of lower incomes, while overall benefit amounts are higher for those of higher incomes (Benefit). Both the scale and the caps are adjusted yearly according to inflation. Social Security accumulates its funds into a trust fund, and puts excess money into investments in US Treasury Securities, where interest is accumulated and put back into the fund. Social Security s benefits are not affected by the investments. Since 1982, the Social Security trust fund has experienced a net increase and in 2015, the asset reserves sit at 2.8 trillion dollars (Financial). Despite this, the misinformed often point their fingers at the trust fund and claim that it is on its last leg, and will soon run out. Every few ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Maslow s hierarchy of needs, physiological needs are those required to sustain life, such as air, water, nourishment, and sleep. If such needs are not satisfied, then one s motivation will arise from the quest to satisfy them. Higher needs such as social needs and esteem are not felt until one has met the needs basic to one s bodily functioning. Europe s advancements in the past centuries certainly had great benefits for the world, but Europe was not perfect; in fact, it was far from it. Although Europe was one of the worlds greatest advancers, It was also one of the worlds greatest aggressors. Europe was responsible for the transatlantic slave trade, colonizing nearly the entirety of Africa, and the two World Wars. So this dilema begs the question, was Europe the visionary innovator, or the harmful aggressor in the 1000 s? Many may argue that Europe s involvement in slavery and the building of colonial empires makes them the sole aggressor of the entirety of the 1000 s. People who say this do have a good point. Europe was heavily involved in the slave trade, according to The Abolition Project, Estimates, based on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance records, put the total number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12 million people (The Abolition Project). Undoubtedly, slavery is one of the most evil actions in history, so obviously Europe is an aggressor for its major involvement in it. • 13. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Virtual Teams Do virtual teams experience the stages of development? When Bruce Tuckman presented his initial theory for group development in 1965, he couldn t have possibly imagined a world dotted with virtual teams. Tuckman s framework for evaluating teamwork using the stages of forming, storming, norming and performing was created after a study of a variety of face to face teams. As a testimony to his work, it is generally accepted that Tuckman s premise about groups experiencing definitive stages toward formation, also applies to groups of people who don t share physical space and span time zones. There is some thought that the storming stage is integrated into the other stages or skipped entirely. (Berry, 2011). The lack of defined storming might be due to virtual teams having more of a task versus personality orientation and having a well defined communication plan also serving as a proactive conflict management measure. Also, there is a shared opinion that well planned formation activities are critically important for a virtual team. At the top of the list is training on the technology and related communication systems to be used. (Berry, 2011). • 22. Roman Military Tactics Essay Roman Military Life Tactics By: Nathanael Delivuk The Roman army was very skilled in sieges, fighting styles/fighting formations and marching orders. Some of these tactics are still used widely today by the US army. But what made all of these tactics so useful to a modern army,? Kkeep reading to find out. In ancient warfare open battles were commonly used but sometimes the defender took a stand in a well fortified city. Whenever an army decided to siege their enemies it took a lot of money, time, and men, so it was the least used option to attack an enemy. The Romans through time copied and improved the artillery weapons used by the Greeks, but they didn t use them in open combat. , Iinstead they were reserved for siege warfare in order to pound the fortifications of cities and strike terror into the defenders. Instead of using horsehair for their siege engines they used animal sinews( a piece of tissue that holds the bones together) which were stronger and could throw rocks farther and with more power. The Romans were a little slow to employ the towers that the Hellenistic kingdoms had perfected. They made changes, making their own towers smaller and more manoeuvrable. The towers also became more useful carrying weapons in them. The Romans added battering rams, a boarding bridge, and fighting platforms which could carry both men and artillery. Towers had wheels so that they could be constructed at a safe distance from the city and then moved closer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The rooms were made out of 2 layers of block and had steel reinforced doors. The doors did their job but the prisoners started to beat at the block walls with weight lifting bars. Soon they busted a hole into the room and dragged the guards through the walls. The guards were assigned men to watch them; these men were ordered to kill the guards if the prison came under attack. Researchers believe that several environmental and genetic factors work together and play a role in the development of Sirenomelia. The most popular medical theory suggests that Sirenomelia could be caused by abnormalities in the blood circulating system within the embryo at an early stage of development. Some affected individuals have been found to have a single large artery followed by the absence of the usual two arteries that branch out to lower areas and carry blood to the tail end of the embryo. The single artery that is present, which is referred to as a steal vessel due to the fact that it essentially steals blood and nutrients from the lower part of the body, diverts the flow of blood that normally circulates from the aorta to the lower portion of the embryo back up to the placenta instead so the blood and nutrients that are needed never end up reaching the tail end of the embryo. Due to the malnutrition from this lack of blood flow, the fetus fails to develop two separate limbs. In my opinion, gender roles are being challenged today to a certain degree, but in order for us to become more open minded, it is imperative to find a central path between the two extremes. While it is important for us to maintain our physiological differences and fulfill certain individual responsibilities, it is equally important for women to assume more significant roles outside the household and to realize their full potential. No Exit, by Jean Paul Satre follows three characters who have been condemned to hell , for the evil deeds committed by them. Here, Satre has represented hell, not in its biblical or Christian sense, where the sinners and transgressors are tortured, but as a room, with no windows and only one door, and where the inhabitants are left alone with their thoughts and the other persons that reside therein. As the play unfolds, the audience is made aware of the sins committed by the individuals that have caused them to be here, including adultery, murder and cowardice. Through this explication, the author has showed us the differing gender roles adopted by men and women but more importantly how certain individuals will tend to deviate from these norms.
