Smart Card is the perfect media that can be used as a health card due to its small size, secure,
capability of digitizing a huge amount of personal and medical data [4]. Some attempts have been
done by researchers to develop a personal portable healthcare record smart cards and a corresponding
framework to simplify maintenance and transfer of patient records [9]. Researchers in the U.K. have
created MyCare, a smart card with a fold out USB plug that can hold a patient s medical history.
MyCare was developed with open source that enables it to run on different computers and operating
systems. Data is protected through PINs and encryption, with a higher level of encryption planned for
further stages in the development process [5][6]. These smart card projects work better in countries
with nationalized health care. In the US For example, competition among hospitals is a barrier to a
smart card system [5]. Smart card technology was not widely spread due to lack of standards (Dash,
2001); the communications between a smart card and smart card reader. The cards also need to be
updated constantly which would be hard to enforce [10]. For smart cards, user mobility is only
possible if every machine that the user access has a smart card reader attached. The machine must
support the same standard smart card reader interfaces or use the same proprietary smart card reader
[11].

Why Does Skidmore Believe In The Curse Of The Poisoned...
Many things happen where lots of suspicion can be raised. There are many reasons in The Curse of the
poisoned pretzel that may have you wondering if Skidmore actually poisoned the pretzel. Skidmore
never liked his brother since he was so into gum and he couldent even eat it. Thats why skidmore
made the pretzel, because he was tired of his brother handing out bubble gum to everybody but he
couldent eat it. His invention was present at every ballpark except the one that his brother owned.
When manchester went to eat the bubble gum sized bite of pretzel he died instantly and people
suspected it involved his brother. The news just reported as if he choked but many people think
otherwise. There are many reasons throughout this story that may lead you to believe he poisoned his
brother.
The first reason people may come to the conclusion that Skidmore poisoned his brother is for revenge

in his face. This raises many questions if maybe his brother also hated him. Since it doesent really say
anything how Manchester felt about Skidmore. Skidmore may have had many other incidents that
were not mentioned on his brother leaving him out of things. Everyone loved Boddlebrooks.
Everyone, that is, except his younger brother, Skidmore. Everyone already knew that he didnt like his

The Causes Of The Third Crusade
The Third Crusade is in the time period of 1189 1192. It began when the city of Jerusalem was
captured by the leader Saladin, he was known to be very strong in the Muslim faith and very hostile
towards anyone who was not a Muslim believer. The Muslims take over cities until the Christians are
worried of their belief becoming overtaken so three leaders decide to take back their cities.
Three of the greatest rulers of Europe united to keep their beliefs in their country and to keep their
land. The three leaders consisted of King Richard of England, King Philip of France and the German
emperor Frederick Barbarossa. These three rulers are the leaders of the Third Crusade against the
Muslim religion, their quest is to retake the city of Jerusalem. Each one of them set out on their own
ways with a large army behind them. Each one of them had thousands of men ready to fight for them
each one of the men sewed on the golden cross made of silk representing the christian belief.
While their way to Asia the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa was in a few battles on their way.
His army was going through an overflowing river and the Emperor was around 70 years old, was
drowned by the power of the water. His men lost interest in the fight and returned to Germany (Linda
Sitseen).
The resources provided to make the armies and fund the war were made by the actions of King
Richard. King Richard raised the imposed taxes on all societal levels. By raiding the Jews and

Uglies Westerfeld Character Analysis
Tally, the main character in the book Uglies , shows many changes in character or thought throughout
the book. Uglies was written by Scott Westerfeld, a New York Times Bestselling Author. In Uglies,
Westerfeld shows the reader how Tally s character changes when Peris visits her in Uglyville, when
Tally finds out David grew up in the Smoke, and when Tally visits David s parents house.
The first time a change of character in Tally is noticed is when she finds out who she trusts, and
commits to, when Peris visits her in Uglyille. This is while Tally is trying to decide whether she wants
to tell the Specials where Shay is, and turn pretty, or keep Shay s location a secret, and stay ugly for
life. Therefore, the statement Tally had it now, an excuse to break her vow. She d made that promise to
Peris, just as real, before she d ever met Shay. She had known him for years, and Shay for only a few
months shows that Tally has decided she would rather keep her promise to Peris other than Shay
(Westerfeld ) . After Peris s visit, Tally decides that she will answer to Dr. Cable s ultimatum and go
on to find out where Shay is, and turn her in. This is when Tally heads for the Smoke as ... Show more

Shay s big adventure. It would be David s home taken from him, his whole life stripped away.
(Westerfeld ). This is a line from Uglies that takes place inside of Tally s mind while she is debating
whether she should give up the Smoke or not. If she did, all the trust that David and Shay have in her
would vanish, although she would be keeping her promise to

Ho Hot Potatoes Answers
Hot Potatoes (https://hotpot.uvic.ca) is a popular software consisting of 6 different educational
applications. Each program enables users, especially teachers to generate different teaching exercises.
Each kind of applications can be used to make a distinct kind of exercises. JBC or Masher, allows
teachers to create multiple choice quizzes whereas JQuiz is useful in text entry with hints available for
students. Another program, JMix lets produce the jumbled word exercises in which students have to
reorder the words logically. Regarding JCross, it is much more convenient than Excel when creating
crosswords in case of complex construction. JCloze produces exercises in form of fill in the blank,
which allows gapping selected words or random gapping. The final application JMatch means
matching fixed items on the left columns to the confusing items on the right ones. Each program
mostly follows the three main steps, which are date entering, configuration adjusting and web pages
creating respectively. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

preparing for the lesson. To be more specific, the teachers can add links, the timer as well as sound

like cultural events or social life. However, the most obvious demerit of Hot Potatoes is that it requires
technological equipment connected to the Internet. Without equipment and Internet, teachers cannot

Hero In Anzia Yezierska s Bread Givers
In Anzia Yezierska s Bread Givers, Sara proves to herself that she is her own hero by defying dated
expectations of filial piety and lifting herself out of the life of poverty that she was born into. She
builds herself up to be an independent member of society via her own achievements and lives her
dream by overcoming the hardships of her parents Old World, and becoming a successful American.
In the end, she strikes balance between still contributing to her family, and caring for herself. For Sara

from Russia. The reality of America was an immediate let down and Sara s family was hurled
headlong into a life of poverty and hardship. Throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

finally alone with [herself], but starkly contrasts this isolated description with the feeling of the
grandest company. Sara celebrates her individuality another time when she leaves college with enough
money to rent a beautiful room. She describes how, I celebrated it alone with myself. I celebrated it in
my room, my first clean, empty room (241). By saying she is with herself even though she is alone ,
Sara demonstrates again that her individuality is a success. She celebrates the luxury of being alone
and overcomes the hardships of her past by embracing

Industrial Worker Dbq
By 1797, there were very few regulations in place for the average industrial worker. However,
pamphlets were often distributed to portray working conditions as adequate, they included statistics of
inhabitants, special regulations, number of deaths, and overall conditions (document 5). Although
working conditions varied and a worker s experience was due to their specific circumstance; these
statistics were not the official numbers and the Society for Bettering the Condition and Increasing the
Comforts of the Poor may have been biased in their effort to prove conditions acceptable. The
minimal regulation and the minor attention to the actual working conditions left the average industrial
worker without a voice and the power to better their employment

The Moral Logic Of Survivor Guilt In The Seventh Man By...
In war, standing here rather than there can save your life but cost a buddy his. It s flukish luck, but you
feel responsible. (Sherman 153). In The Moral Logic of Survivor Guilt, Nancy Sherman uses this
quote to explain the basis of survivor guilt in war. In The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami, the
narrator failed to save his closest friend from a wave. As Sherman said in her quote, people often feel
guilty when they survive a situation that others didn t. The narrator s situation in The Seventh Man is a
perfect example of this. Despite his failure to save K., the narrator should still forgive himself.
The Seventh Man was unsuccessful in saving his childhood friend, K. In spite of his lack of success,
he should not have to live with guilt about this for his entire life. In Sherman s editorial, she states
that, Subjective guilt, associated with this sense of responsibility, is thought to be irrational because
one feels guilty despite the fact that he knows he has done nothing wrong. (Sherman 154). The
Seventh Man did not do anything wrong, therefore, if he were to feel guilt, it would be subjective. The
failure to fulfil a task due to fear or another overpowering feeling is not the same as doing something
incorrectly. The Seventh Man says, What made me do this, I m sure, was fear, a fear so overpowering
it took my voice away and set my legs to running on their own. (Murakami 138). This statement
illustrates how he desperately wanted to do the right thing and run to his friend, but his feelings and
subconscious thoughts drove him to do the opposite. This is something a person cannot be blamed for.
Therefore, it would only be reasonable for the Seventh Man to forgive himself for what occurred.
It is simple to argue that the Seventh Man should not forgive himself for failing to save K. One may
assert that the narrator could have physically warned K. by giving him a slight shove or patting him on
the back. Although this is logical, if one were to literally put him or herself in the Seventh Man s
situation, he or she would recognize the overwhelming amount of thoughts running through his head
in the moment. In The Key to Disaster Survival? Friends and Neighbors, Shankar Vedantam reports

Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology
For many years, various forms of madness have been noted in every culture. Multitudes of theories, as
well as some myths, have been developed to explain such conditions. Society s opinion on what was
considered abnormal was based on such phenomenon as paranormal forces, the anger of the gods, the
influence of the moon, unstable personality, hereditary factors, and debauchery (Frude, 1998). History
shows that theorists continue to develop a variety of theories to explain psychological disorders. These
theories usually fall in one of three basic categories: mystical/supernatural (possession of ... Show

Scientific advances in mental illness were virtually nonexistent during the Middle Ages. Spiritual
causes ruled, and those with psychological disorders were classified as morally weak, or were accused
of forbidden practices, such as those associated with witchery, sorcery, and the devil (Damour Hansell,
2005). Witch hunts were more common at the height of the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe,
accusing many of the mentally ill of practicing witchcraft. Various attempts were made over the years
to encourage just treatment of the mentally ill, and various voices of reason attempted to eliminate the
stigma of abnormal behavior.
Emil Kraepelin began using scientific methods to classify mental disorders by concentrating on the
biological characteristics of mental disorders (Frude, 1998). Kraepelin s approach resulted in a closer
alliance between psychiatry and medicine, believing that a chemical imbalance was to blame for
schizophrenia and that a metabolism abnormality caused manic depression (Frude, 1998). Numerous
core concepts in psychology have influenced explanations of abnormal behavior. Models for
explaining abnormal behavior throughout history (historical relativism), and the principle of stressing
the assimilation of different perspectives (multiple causality) have helped differentiate between
predisposing and precipitating causes of abnormal behavior. The connection between mind and body
has become the most modern model, signifying that both biological

Comparing Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and Kenneth Branagh s Frankenstein
Most Americans have some idea of who Frankenstein is, as a result of the many Frankenstein movies.
Contrary to popular belief Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is a scientist, not a monster. The monster is not
the inarticulate, rage driven criminal depicted in the 1994 film version of the novel. Shelley s original
Frankenstein was misrepresented by this Kenneth branagh film, most likely to send a different
message to the movie audience than Shelley s novel shows to its readers. The conflicting messages of

Frankenstein s and society s rejection of the monster, however, drove him to an uneven passionate
pursuit for a companion. He forced Frankenstein to create a female monster, and he provided
motivation by killing Frankenstein s loved ones and threatening to kill more of them. The monster
recalls in this final scene of Shelley s novel how his desire drove him to evil. . . . do you think that I

Not the ten thousandth portion of the anguish that was mine during the lingering detail of its

changed from good in nature to evil in nature. His own desires are more important to him than the

Seat Belt Safety
A young man was being pulled over for not wearing his seat belt, while the officer was writing the

bystander. It may seem like having more stringent seat belt laws is a reputable idea; Nevertheless, It is
not the most feasible way to maintain safety on the road, Drivers would be safer if they merely
exercised some common sense to put down their cell phones and paid attention to the road. Failing to
wear a seat belt should not be illegal because it only affects the driver s safety, it is impractical for
police to enforce, and lastly, the majority of people already wears a seat belt.
By not wearing a seat belt only the driver s security is affected. First, Whenever a driver is not using

money are spending to get one s vote and get victory. Each vote counts important to candidate, so
he/she spends as money as they can and want to get every possible vote in their favor. But spending a
lot of money doesn t ensure one s victory. Looking to the last year s election statistics of The Texas
Tribune, Clinton spent more money than Trump during the time of election, but she didn t win the

am the one who is running for the office, then my slogan will be, Let s Put Hands Together for The
Difference . There are lots of politicians and have their own points of view, but I want to make
differences starting from the current political affairs and the problems that people facing in the present
situation. I will mostly focus on the crimes that are happening in today s date. We can hear gun shoot
out in many places, killing people for some money, drugs selling and many other crimes on daily
basis. I will reach out the interest group like Texas NAACP, Texas Moratorium Network which can
help me in my campaigns. Another factor that can affect my campaigns is media. Media plays a vital
role for the popularity of the office during the time of election and maintain the good image of
candidate in public. A candidate must have good relationship with the medias because media can
create a good image of candidates in the public. I will seek the help of newspaper like Daily News,
USA Today, News Day and so on for my election campaigns because they are the most selling
newspaper till this date. I will ask some of the celebrities to help me in my campaigns. I will mostly
prefer the top rated singers like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Jay Z and so on because they can the most

Revolution during the Swinging Sixties
The 1960s was a turning point in American history. Many remember the decade as the Swinging
Sixties, best remembered for the hippies and the Beatles, the Rolling stones and the Summer of Love,
drugs, flamboyant fashion, and the permissive society (Fisher 3). Socially, fashion was making a 180
degree turn. The Beatles influenced fashion for many bands. As Garson stated in his book, Out were
the matching jackets, ties, and pompadours, in were jeans, vests, and longer hair combed down in the
style of the Beatles. (Garson 86). First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy influenced women s fashion a great
deal as well. Fashion both followed and predicated political action. (Rielly 75 77). She set the fashion
standards for women, and introduced new trends, such as the pillbox hat. Politically, an even that
traumatized the American society was President John F. Kennedy s assassination. Lee Harvy Oswald
assassinated him on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. One of John F. Kennedy s goals for America
was to help reduce poverty. After his murder, President Lyndon B. Johnson quickly jumped into office
to help complete his work often known as the Great Society. It was the largest reform since Roosevelt
s New Deal. Two very important pieces of legislation were passed. The Civil Rights Bill that JFK
promised to sign was passed into law...Johnson also signed the omnibus Economic Opportunity Act of
1964. (Lyndon Johnson s 1). But, his goal was made harder when America became more

Physical Differences InCathedral, By Raymond Carver
In Cathedral by Raymond Carver writes seeing, looking, and feeling multiple times throughout the
story. Cathedral is about two men bonding disregarding their prejudice, and physical differences.
Carver writes passages that describe the difference between looking, seeing, and feeling; revealing
that the main character s connection to Robert gets stronger as the story progressed, emphasizing the
importance of the connection between the narrator and Robert throughout the story. The passages
emphasize the importance of how relationships develop and strengthen over time and show how they
can form between people that had prejudices or preconceived notions against those people.
The main character s thoughts and beliefs on blind people are solely based off of how he looked at
them from his television and reveals that he has a weak connection to them. Generally, looking is the
shallowest of the three actions that people do (listed above). Looking is cold, distant and gives the
impression that the person who is looking is only digging at the surface of an object. The narrator
never interacted with blind people before Robert: And his being blind bothered me. My idea of
blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed (Carver
102). The narrator decided to dislike blind people after looking at their cinematic counterparts. He did
not dig deeper into what they were saying, just judged them based off of their appearance, and the
narrator then judged Robert before he had met him. This quote came from the beginning of the story
and gave the reader a taste of the connection between
Robert and the narrator. This leads the reader to believe that they did not have a strong connection
with each other before they interacted because of the way blind people looked.
The main character has met Robert, talked about their lives, and got to know each other; this
ultimately allowed the main character to see Robert and form a relationship with him. Seeing is
exponentially better than looking because to see is to dig deeper than just looking. Seeing is to look at
the actual person, but not just their outside appearance. The narrator acknowledges this by his actions:

The Life Of James Madison Essay
The Life of James Madison
Madison Williams
Central High School

3rd Period Abstract In my paper I will state and explain the least known aspects of James Madison.
James Madison contributed to some of the most simple and complex events that have not been
recognized. For his job well done, I am willing to make those aspects known. The Life of James
Madison James Madison, also known as The Father on the Constitution , contributed to quite a few
intellectual events in the United States. Madison was an intelligent man with bright ideas that helped
this country become the one it is today. With all his appearances to debates, committee meetings, and
being elected in conventions, he was able to present us the federal government we have today and
some of our basic rights. James Madison s life and times, before, during, and after presidency is now
becoming more well known and interpreted. James Madison was born on March 16, 1751, in Port
Conway, Virginia, to Colonel James Madison Sr. and Eleanor Rose Conway. Madison and his siblings
grew up into the Christian religion since his family was very religious. James had eleven other siblings
and was the oldest out of them all. All his siblings were outgoing and playful, but James was the most
fragile out of all his siblings due to Epileptoid Hysteria. Epileptiod Hysteria is a sickness that causes

How Did Isaac Newton Contribute To The Discovery Of Calculus
Calculus is a means for calculating the way quantities vary with each other, rather than just the
quantities themselves. Mathematicians everywhere contributed to the development of Calculus.
However, we usually give credit to Isaac Newton and Gottfried William Leibniz. Today, the credit is
given to both men, however, in the 1600s a controversy occurred over which of them deserved credit.
Isaac Newton is a very well known scientists and is recognized as one of the most accomplished
mathematicians. He was born in 1643, and began the discovery of Calculus in 1666. However, he did
not publish his work until thirty two years later in 1704. Newton claims that he began working on the

Java was developed by a team led by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems. Originally called Oak, it
was designed in 1991 for use in embedded consumer electronic appliances. In 1995, renamed Java, it
was redesigned for developing Internet applications.
Java is a full featured, general purpose programming language that is capable of developing robust
mission critical applications. Today, it is used not only for Web programming, but also for developing
standalone applications across platforms on servers, desktops, and mobile devices. It was used to
develop the code to communicate with and control the robotic rover that rolled on Mars. Many

1.10.2. Reserved Words
Reserved words, or keywords, are words that have a specific meaning to the compiler and cannot be
used for other purposes in the program. For example, when the compiler sees the word class, it
understands that the word after class is the name for the class. Other reserved words in Listing 1.1 are
public, static, and void. Their use will be introduced later in the book.
Tip
Because Java is case sensitive, public is a reserved word, but Public is not. Nonetheless, for clarity and
readability, it would be best to avoid using reserved words in other forms.
1.10.3. Modifiers
Java uses certain reserved words called modifiers that specify the properties of the data, methods, and
classes and how they can be used. Examples of modifiers are public and static. Other modifiers are
private, final, abstract, and protected. A public datum, method, or class can be accessed by other
classes. A private datum or method cannot be accessed by other classes.

The Role Of Bread In Japanese Economic History
Food of Efficiency : The Role of Bread in Japanese Economic History from the 1910s to the 1960s
The history of bread in Japan began in the early Meiji Period, when Kimuraya Sohonten, a Tokyo
bread store, opened and invented Anpan, a popular sweet bread with red bean paste inside.
Approximately one hundred and fifty years have passed since then. In these 150 years, Japan s
numerous social changes have shifted and redefined the role of bread in the Japanese diet. Frist, bread
was a popular novelty food and a status symbol until the beginning of the 20th century . Between the
1910s and the 1960s, bread functioned as a food of efficiency and eventually became one of the main
staple foods in Japan. Form the 1970s to the present, bread has reformed into a form of snack in the
Japanese daily diet . While appreciating the delicate contemporary bread snacks , one might also
notice the contrast between bread s role as snack now and its role as a food of efficiency before. How
did bread become a food of efficiency, and what was the significance of this part of the history of
bread in Japan? From the beginning of World War I in the 1910s to Japan s Economy Miracle in the
1960s, bread served as a food of efficiency and the history of bread in Japan closely reflected the

Bacchae Theatre Experience
The Bacchae was really interesting to see, especially after taking the spectacle theatre class. It actually
reminded me more of exercises that we did in spectacle theater than in this class but it did remind me
of the sound project, particularly when the Bacchae go into the crowd and start yelling from the
sidelines during the Walls Work scene because it was a really great way of creating a sort of
soundscape atmosphere that came from more than one direction on the stage. Those are the kind of
concepts that we were playing with in the sound exercise. Some of the lines, like some of the more
abstract Bacchae lines reminded me of free writing exercises, especially ones where we would start

Ambassador Health Reflection
I completed my community service hours at Ambassador Health. I have completed all 15 hours that
was required. At Ambassador Health, I got to interact with a variety of people. Some of them were
babies, others were toddlers, a teenager, and of course nurses. I tried to create a bond with them while
I was there. I spent a lot of time with the teenager, and we would read books, play connect four, color,
and work on math. We honestly had so much fun together no matter what we were doing. She became
a very close friend of mine who I still want to see regularly. I believe that she looked up to me as a
sister and we even got so close that she talked to me about her accident. The fact that she could trust
me enough to talk about her past with me and inform me about what happened to her made me feel
like a lucky girl. She impacted my life tremendously by making me not take a single day for granted,
because you never know when it could all change. However, she was not the only one that I got close
to. I also spent a lot of time with some toddlers. They liked to play in the toy room and play with
various toys. We had fun rolling a car back and forth and playing with a basketball. I got close to those
kids and we always had fun. They had so much energy that no matter how much we played they were
never ready for me to leave. I also got close to a few of the nurses. I learned a lot from the children,
but also the nurses. They tried to not interrupt the children and me while I was there.

Edward Hopper, who represents arguably the zenith of the 20th century, American Realism and the 19

time. In 1942 Hopper created the piece Nighthawks and Van Gogh created Café Terrace at Night , also
known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum which was created in mid September of 1888. Both
of these compositions were painted using the same Oil on canvas medium. Both painting even have a

Hopper uses these formalities to depict real life diner in American. Hopper purpose and what he was
trying to say I believe he wanted to create a timeless feel for American art. Café Terrace at Night was
the first painting that Van Gogh painted where he used a nocturnal background. Using contrasting
colors and tones, unlike Nighthawk which used complementary colors, Van Gogh was able to achieve
a luminous surface with an interior light. Because of the brightness of the luminous surface Van Gogh
manage to brighten up the painting with bright yellow stars that appear to make the sky glow,
alongside the lights that pour out of the cafe making it attention grabbing. Likewise with Nighthawks
with its illuminate diner which shows similarities in their lighting. The lines of composition is also
different from Nighthawk which its lines were very straight and rectangular, the composition in this
piece points to the center of the work drawing the viewer s eye along the pavement as if it were
strolling the streets. Van Gogh was able to recreated the setting directly from his observation, again
similar to Hopper when he used the Greenwich Village diner as inspiration for his work. Both pieces
are successful works of art but, depending on the culture one is more popular than the other.

Identity in a Color Conscious Society in Invisible Man
Critics generally agree that Ralph Ellison s award winning novel, Invisible Man, is a work of genius,
broad in its appeal and universal in its meaning. Its various themes have been stated as: the geography
of hell . . . the real brotherhood of man (Morris 5), the emergence of Negro personality from the fixed
boundaries of southern life (Bone 46), and the search for human and national identity (Major 17). Rich
in symbolism and cleverly interwoven, Invisible Man s linear plot structure, told from the first person,

Critic Todd Libber points out that invisibility results from a perception each society holds to be true.
What does not fit into that idea of reality is therefore assigned to chaos and is invisible (90).
The rising action takes root at the time when, on his death bed, the narrator s grandfather reveals to the
family that the life of a black person living in a foreign white America has always been and still is a
life of war and opposition, and to keep up the fight. This puzzles the young impressionable narrator,
for his grandfather has been the meekest of men who, as is further revealed, believes himself to have
been a traitor and a spy all these years, and that his meekness has, in actuality, been a dangerous
activity. The tactics of agree em to death and undermine em with grins (15,16) are the tools that enable
the Negro to survive, in essence agreeing to invisibility, until blindness strikes down white society
(Margolies 135). Thus, Grandfather s words establish and foreshadow the cultural beliefs, such as
racism and bigotry that the young narrator will encounter in a prejudicial society as he navigates his
way through the social mine fields of America.
Further, the surreal circus like atmosphere that envelopes race relations in our country is no laughing
matter. Indeed, as the narrator tucks away enough experiences for a gradual dawning to unfold

Eugenic Decision-Making
Eugenics is defined, in some way or the other, as the process of reshaping the human race by
determining the kinds of people who will be born. As such, there is much debate in the field of
eugenics, with authors, like Philip Kitcher, who support laissez faire or a minimalist approach of
eugenics in which eugenic decision making should be limited only to avoid neurological illnesses and
in which parental free choice is valued. Gregory Stock s essay, The Enhanced and Un Enhanced,
presents otherwise by supporting the position of maximalist eugenics, allowing individuals the full

prevent the previously mentioned dangers caused by laissez faire eugenics. Kitcher s view of utopian
eugenics envisions a society in which genetics allow people to make free and educated reproductive
choices and in which the education broadens an understanding of the likely quality of a modest life.
Contrary to Kitcher s minimalist model that constrains eugenic decisions only to avoid neurological
diseases, Gregory Stock s position in the debate defends maximalist eugenics in which individuals
have total free eugenic decision making, including enhancement, without any state coercion. He wants
readers to accept and adopt such a position by arguing that genetic engineering such as selecting and
alternating embryos is an inevitable future and human destiny (7, Stock, CC p.279). For example, if
redesigning humans became commonplace, Stock reasons that parents would give their children
endowments they desire but could not otherwise obtain and thus further expand life s possibilities to
the next generation (8, Stock, CC p.276). In this society, people s genes would become an embodiment
of their parents values and preferences. People would arguably want such endowments since they
would view modifications as beneficial in

Robert Mondavi and the Wine Industry Essay
Robert Mondavi and the Wine Industry
1. The industry structure in the Old World is significantly different than the New World. First, the Old
World has a very low concentration ratio, while the diversity of competitors is high. Along with other
factors the Old Worlds industry rivalry is very high. In contrast the industry rivalry is relatively low
because of the extremely high concentration ratio and the low diversity of competitors. The New
World is made up of large publicly held firms in comparison to the small private owned vineyards in
the Old World that historically have produced for their own consumption. Another difference is
between the suppliers in both industries. The suppliers in the Old World are one in the same with the

However, buyers in the Old World have equally high power as those in the New World because of the
extensive amount of different producers in the Old World. All of these comparable elements affect the
industry attractiveness in different ways. However, I feel that when comparing both worlds, the
industry attractiveness is almost the same. The industry attractiveness for wine production is
moderate. The wine industry has been affected by the various governments throughout its history.
They governments have regulated bottling and packaging as well as the distribution systems. The
industry has also shifted with the amount of education offered to consumers about wine. This has led
to some firms just reaping the benefits of those who are promoting general industry awareness. A main
reason this industry would be attractive is because consumers must first try the product in order to
determine if they like it or not. Consumers also tend to be brand loyal if they are satisfied with a
certain type of wine and will go to great measures in order to repurchase. There are also many
consumers who are uneducated about wine and mainly purchase on price. Price in the wine industry
can be very effective in relaying perceived quality. The wine industry is attractive also if one firm
owns their own vineyard because the life of the vineyard is extremely long and will be relatively
constant for a producer.

Legalizing Abortion Research Paper
Legalizing abortion in United States (Due to Court ruling of Roe v Wade in 1973).
The effect of legalizing abortion was that it dropped crime rate. Women were able to get rid of the
baby since they knew that they would be able to take care of them. The book says, One study has
shown that the typical child who went unborn in the earliest years of legalized abortion would have
been 50% more likely than average to live in poverty, he would have one parent. These two factors
childhood poverty and a single parent household are among the strongest predictors that a child will
have a criminal future. (Pg. 138 139) What this means was that thanks to the legalizing of abortion,
women with a low class status would be able to stop criminal rates without ... Show more content on

The book says, Furthermore, the algorithm would seek out a classroom full of students who performed
far better than their past scores would have predicted and who then went on to score significantly
lower the following year. Pg. 26
Having a pool in a backyard.
Having a pool has heavier number of child deaths than having a gun in a house. The book states, The
likelihood of death by pool (1 in 11,00) versus death by gun (1 in 1 million plus) isn t even close.
What this shows is that having a pool is the silent assassin of deaths and should be taken seriously for
the safety of their children.
The first cause and effect shows that unexpected actions that people take can sometimes be helpful to
a community. Abortion somehow took a role in reducing the percentage someone has on becoming a
criminal. Also abortion reduced crime rate altogether, it would have been disastrous if abortion wasn t
made legal because then the criminal rate would have skyrocketed through the roof. The following
cause and effect shows what some people are willing to do just to get extra dough in their pocket.
Teachers are willing to risk getting fired by giving answers to their students on tests that determine
how well they were taught. They give the answers hoping that they will get promoted or get a raise.
The final cause and effect is a pool. It seems bezerk how a pool

The Gospel Of Wealth Analysis
The late 19th century was a time of rapid industrialization in the United States during which many
people developed different views towards wealth and the wealthy class. Three specific viewers who
had similar, but differentiating opinions of this were Andrew Carnegie, Eugene Debs, and Booker T.
Washington who believed that wealth could either enable people to rise in society or that it should be
distributed.
Andrew Carnegie was not only a hugely successful businessman, but a great philanthropist. With the
wealth that he acquired from the Carnegie Steel company, he promoted education and world peace.
Carnegie was perhaps one of the first people to publicly state that the wealthy had a moral obligation
to give away their fortunes. In 1889, he wrote The Gospel of Wealth ; in this book he argued that all
personal wealth that is not used to provide necessities for one s family should be treated as a trust fund
for the better of the community. Carnegie also built free public libraries in an effort to encourage self
education. Finally, Carnegie set up a number of trusts to continue his mission even after his death.

Washington, Eugene Debs s view on the growth of wealth during industrialization was a more
negative view of capitalism and more eager to change. In the 19th and early 20th century, he was the
leader of the American Railway Union and the Socialist Party. He believed in the rights of the worker
and the rights of the common man. He argued that wealth in the nation should be shared, which is
similar to the belief that Andrew Carnegie had. Debs saw that most of the rich remained rich and the
poor remained poor; throughout his life, he worked on trying to change this condition. This action is
seen when he led the Pullman Palace Car strike in order to obtain better conditions for the workers of
the Chicago railroad company since their wages were split in

How Does Coal Ash Affect The Environment
Fatima Hawter Hawter 1
Nicola Thame
ENG 112 E02
04/26/2017
Coal is a dirty industry from beginning to end, but until recently the public knew very little of how the
coal cycle ends with millions of tons of toxic coal ash waste produced each year. Coal ash can cause
many health problems for people who are exposed to it, and it can also damage our environment. The
EPA has been very lenient with coal ash reuse and storage, and due to that leniency, many
communities were and still are being negatively affected. Coal ash is not only negatively affecting
North Carolina and the United States, it s negatively affecting Earth in general. Coal ash is a global
problem, and the EPA should be more strict with companies that reuse or store coal ash. As we deal
with decades of coal ash waste, ultimately, we must stop burning coal to make power and find better
ways to efficiently create electricity without making global warming worse. ... Show more content on

And while the EPA categorized coal ash as a non toxic substance (so that it can be buried in solid
waste landfills, capped in place, and used for building materials), nevertheless, coal ash contains a
variety of toxic elements like selenium, mercury, and lead (Plumer), which are commonly known to
cause many health problems. Even the EPA stated that If the coal ash was deposited in an unlined
landfill or sand pit or quarry, some of these toxic elements could leach into the groundwater or migrate
off site.

Essay on Writing Rediscovered
Writing Rediscovered
Most of us never think about the technology we use when writing, whether we are jotting down our To
Do lists or pulling out a pencil for an exam, we do it without much thought. Walter Ong tells us
Although we take writing so much for granted as to forget that it is a technology, writing is in a way
the most drastic of the three technologies of the word (321). I believe that many of us would agree that
although we may not consider writing to be a drastic technology, we would say that it is an important
one.
For me there has never really been a reason to put much thought into the act of writing. I have put a lot
of thought in to what to write or how to write it, but never the physical component of ... Show more

Since the piece of wood I used had not fallen from the tree itself, it is obvious that someone had to use
a saw to cut it. I did not use any tools myself but rather left the large piece of firewood as it was. I
hunted for wild berries in a wooded area near my home and found some small red ones on a wild
bush. I would like to believe that this bush grew there naturally, but I somehow cannot fully believe
that there was no technology involved in the placement of that bush. To produce the words that I
needed to write I squeezed the red berry juice onto the log and wrote, I love my three kids Meagan,
Maddy and Emma and Eddie too my name is Amy Lynn Johnson. It proved to be very difficult to
write those eighteen words for many reasons. First, it was difficult to write small enough to fit so
many words onto my log because the juice from the berries would run. I also found that the berries
had to be extremely ripe in order to produce the dark red juice, for if they were not yet ready the juice
inside ran clear. Next, I found that without a sharp point it was difficult to even shape or form the
letters themselves, and the rounded edges of the berries were not strong enough to withstand the
pressure that my hand was placing on them.
I found out, when it rained, that this writing material would not be permanent due to the fact that my
berry ink was washed away. This invention has proved to be very unreliable in keeping text for any

The Corruption Of The Puritans In New England In 1639
Deciding that religious freedom is worth the risks, the puritans crossed the sea. Puritans were
reformed protestants and believed that the church of England was still too much like it was before.
They believed the church of was corrupt. They didn t break from the church but sought to reform it, so
they set out for the New World in the 1630. When they arrived in the New England area they decided
to start a new colony. The puritans were very strict and didn t tolerate other religions.
Thomas Hooker was the founder of Connecticut colony and a prominent puritan minister. His most
famous sermon was on May 31, 1638 on Principles of Government. This influenced the fundamentals
of government in 1639. Roger Ludlow wrote most of the fundamentals of government,

The Importance Of Voter Participation In The United States
The dispute between rather or not the voting age should be lowered to 16 is questionable. On one hand
you have veteran voters that believe it should not. With the possibility of it lowering the percentage of
voting participation. Also, you have the youth that wants to be included. It may not be benificial to all.
From 1948 to 2012 voter participation has changed very little. 51 percent to 62 percent is a small
increase in 64 years. In 2012 The United States voter anticipation was 38 percent. Were as most voters

Smart Card is the perfect media that can be used as a health card due to its small size, secure, capability of digitizing a huge amount of personal and medical data [4]. Some attempts have been done by researchers to develop a personal portable healthcare record smart cards and a corresponding framework to simplify maintenance and transfer of patient records [9]. Researchers in the U.K. have created MyCare, a smart card with a fold out USB plug that can hold a patient s medical history. MyCare was developed with open source that enables it to run on different computers and operating systems. Data is protected through PINs and encryption, with a higher level of encryption planned for further stages in the development process [5][6]. • 12. The Moral Logic Of Survivor Guilt In The Seventh Man By... In war, standing here rather than there can save your life but cost a buddy his. It s flukish luck, but you feel responsible. (Sherman 153). In The Moral Logic of Survivor Guilt, Nancy Sherman uses this quote to explain the basis of survivor guilt in war. In The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami, the narrator failed to save his closest friend from a wave. As Sherman said in her quote, people often feel guilty when they survive a situation that others didn t. The narrator s situation in The Seventh Man is a perfect example of this. Despite his failure to save K., the narrator should still forgive himself. The Seventh Man was unsuccessful in saving his childhood friend, K. In spite of his lack of success, he should not have to live with guilt about this for his entire life. In Sherman s editorial, she states that, Subjective guilt, associated with this sense of responsibility, is thought to be irrational because one feels guilty despite the fact that he knows he has done nothing wrong. (Sherman 154). The Seventh Man did not do anything wrong, therefore, if he were to feel guilt, it would be subjective. The failure to fulfil a task due to fear or another overpowering feeling is not the same as doing something incorrectly. The Seventh Man says, What made me do this, I m sure, was fear, a fear so overpowering it took my voice away and set my legs to running on their own. (Murakami 138). This statement illustrates how he desperately wanted to do the right thing and run to his friend, but his feelings and subconscious thoughts drove him to do the opposite. This is something a person cannot be blamed for. Therefore, it would only be reasonable for the Seventh Man to forgive himself for what occurred. It is simple to argue that the Seventh Man should not forgive himself for failing to save K. One may assert that the narrator could have physically warned K. by giving him a slight shove or patting him on the back. Although this is logical, if one were to literally put him or herself in the Seventh Man s situation, he or she would recognize the overwhelming amount of thoughts running through his head in the moment. • 13. Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology Abnormal Psychology PSY 410 January 30, 2012 Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology For many years, various forms of madness have been noted in every culture. Multitudes of theories, as well as some myths, have been developed to explain such conditions. Society s opinion on what was considered abnormal was based on such phenomenon as paranormal forces, the anger of the gods, the influence of the moon, unstable personality, hereditary factors, and debauchery (Frude, 1998). History shows that theorists continue to develop a variety of theories to explain psychological disorders. These theories usually fall in one of three basic categories: mystical/supernatural (possession of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientific advances in mental illness were virtually nonexistent during the Middle Ages. Spiritual causes ruled, and those with psychological disorders were classified as morally weak, or were accused of forbidden practices, such as those associated with witchery, sorcery, and the devil (Damour Hansell, 2005). Witch hunts were more common at the height of the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe, accusing many of the mentally ill of practicing witchcraft. Various attempts were made over the years to encourage just treatment of the mentally ill, and various voices of reason attempted to eliminate the stigma of abnormal behavior. Emil Kraepelin began using scientific methods to classify mental disorders by concentrating on the biological characteristics of mental disorders (Frude, 1998). Kraepelin s approach resulted in a closer alliance between psychiatry and medicine, believing that a chemical imbalance was to blame for schizophrenia and that a metabolism abnormality caused manic depression (Frude, 1998). Numerous core concepts in psychology have influenced explanations of abnormal behavior. Models for explaining abnormal behavior throughout history (historical relativism), and the principle of stressing the assimilation of different perspectives (multiple causality) have helped differentiate between predisposing and precipitating causes of abnormal behavior. The connection between mind and body has become the most modern model, signifying that both biological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The narrator never interacted with blind people before Robert: And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed (Carver 102). The narrator decided to dislike blind people after looking at their cinematic counterparts. He did not dig deeper into what they were saying, just judged them based off of their appearance, and the narrator then judged Robert before he had met him. This quote came from the beginning of the story and gave the reader a taste of the connection between Robert and the narrator. This leads the reader to believe that they did not have a strong connection with each other before they interacted because of the way blind people looked. The main character has met Robert, talked about their lives, and got to know each other; this ultimately allowed the main character to see Robert and form a relationship with him. Seeing is exponentially better than looking because to see is to dig deeper than just looking. Seeing is to look at the actual person, but not just their outside appearance. The narrator acknowledges this by his actions: I reached to draw her robe back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Critic Todd Libber points out that invisibility results from a perception each society holds to be true. What does not fit into that idea of reality is therefore assigned to chaos and is invisible (90). The rising action takes root at the time when, on his death bed, the narrator s grandfather reveals to the family that the life of a black person living in a foreign white America has always been and still is a life of war and opposition, and to keep up the fight. This puzzles the young impressionable narrator, for his grandfather has been the meekest of men who, as is further revealed, believes himself to have been a traitor and a spy all these years, and that his meekness has, in actuality, been a dangerous activity. The tactics of agree em to death and undermine em with grins (15,16) are the tools that enable the Negro to survive, in essence agreeing to invisibility, until blindness strikes down white society (Margolies 135). • 44. The Gospel Of Wealth Analysis The late 19th century was a time of rapid industrialization in the United States during which many people developed different views towards wealth and the wealthy class. Three specific viewers who had similar, but differentiating opinions of this were Andrew Carnegie, Eugene Debs, and Booker T. Washington who believed that wealth could either enable people to rise in society or that it should be distributed. Andrew Carnegie was not only a hugely successful businessman, but a great philanthropist. With the wealth that he acquired from the Carnegie Steel company, he promoted education and world peace. Carnegie was perhaps one of the first people to publicly state that the wealthy had a moral obligation to give away their fortunes. In 1889, he wrote The Gospel of Wealth ; in this book he argued that all personal wealth that is not used to provide necessities for one s family should be treated as a trust fund for the better of the community. Carnegie also built free public libraries in an effort to encourage self education. Finally, Carnegie set up a number of trusts to continue his mission even after his death. Booker T. Washington s stance of the wealth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Washington, Eugene Debs s view on the growth of wealth during industrialization was a more negative view of capitalism and more eager to change. In the 19th and early 20th century, he was the leader of the American Railway Union and the Socialist Party. He believed in the rights of the worker and the rights of the common man. He argued that wealth in the nation should be shared, which is similar to the belief that Andrew Carnegie had. Debs saw that most of the rich remained rich and the poor remained poor; throughout his life, he worked on trying to change this condition. This action is seen when he led the Pullman Palace Car strike in order to obtain better conditions for the workers of the Chicago railroad company since their wages were split in ... How Does Coal Ash Affect The Environment Fatima Hawter Hawter 1 Nicola Thame ENG 112 E02 04/26/2017 Coal is a dirty industry from beginning to end, but until recently the public knew very little of how the coal cycle ends with millions of tons of toxic coal ash waste produced each year. Coal ash can cause many health problems for people who are exposed to it, and it can also damage our environment. The EPA has been very lenient with coal ash reuse and storage, and due to that leniency, many communities were and still are being negatively affected. Coal ash is not only negatively affecting North Carolina and the United States, it s negatively affecting Earth in general. Coal ash is a global problem, and the EPA should be more strict with companies that reuse or store coal ash. As we deal with decades of coal ash waste, ultimately, we must stop burning coal to make power and find better ways to efficiently create electricity without making global warming worse. ... And while the EPA categorized coal ash as a non toxic substance (so that it can be buried in solid waste landfills, capped in place, and used for building materials), nevertheless, coal ash contains a variety of toxic elements like selenium, mercury, and lead (Plumer), which are commonly known to cause many health problems. • 46. Essay on Writing Rediscovered Writing Rediscovered Most of us never think about the technology we use when writing, whether we are jotting down our To Do lists or pulling out a pencil for an exam, we do it without much thought. Walter Ong tells us Although we take writing so much for granted as to forget that it is a technology, writing is in a way the most drastic of the three technologies of the word (321). I believe that many of us would agree that although we may not consider writing to be a drastic technology, we would say that it is an important one. For me there has never really been a reason to put much thought into the act of writing. I have put a lot of thought in to what to write or how to write it, but never the physical component of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the piece of wood I used had not fallen from the tree itself, it is obvious that someone had to use a saw to cut it. I did not use any tools myself but rather left the large piece of firewood as it was. I hunted for wild berries in a wooded area near my home and found some small red ones on a wild bush. I would like to believe that this bush grew there naturally, but I somehow cannot fully believe that there was no technology involved in the placement of that bush. To produce the words that I needed to write I squeezed the red berry juice onto the log and wrote, I love my three kids Meagan, Maddy and Emma and Eddie too my name is Amy Lynn Johnson. It proved to be very difficult to write those eighteen words for many reasons. First, it was difficult to write small enough to fit so many words onto my log because the juice from the berries would run. I also found that the berries had to be extremely ripe in order to produce the dark red juice, for if they were not yet ready the juice inside ran clear. Next, I found that without a sharp point it was difficult to even shape or form the letters themselves, and the rounded edges of the berries were not strong enough to withstand the pressure that my hand was placing on them. I found out, when it rained, that this writing material would not be permanent due to the fact that my berry ink was washed away. This invention has proved to be very unreliable in keeping text for any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
