Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay
When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film
stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats,
Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all
these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson
s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and
machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the
other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors
with different roles and these actors have to perform to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and grows
distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed
him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his
grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he
abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he
had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to
another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been
abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because
there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned
by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor
their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man
(Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not
bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle,

The Themes In The Shawl By Cynthia Othick
The Short Story named The Shawl by Cynthia Othick narrates the survival of a mother, daughter and a
niece, during the Holocaust, them being in a concentration camp and participating in death marches. It
fits the theme of survival of the fittest as the daughter, named Magda, was forced to adapt to her needs
after the mother was not able to do it. Stella, the niece, is a third wheel in the story, she is most of the
time ignored by Rosa as she fully concentrates in taking care of Magda, or at least attempting to, and
Stella is just left their as somewhat of filling character. The obscurity of Stella is also stated by the
author when she says Stella, cold, cold, the coldness of hell (1980) Cynthia Othick, with this
information it can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on The Use of Sound in the Graduate
The use of sound in The Graduate
The movie The Graduate was a pioneer for the film industry in regards to its use of popular music as
non diegetic sound throughout the film. The Simon and Garfunkel sound track fit in very nicely to set
the tone of the film and give the audience clues as to what the characters were feeling. Aside from the
non diegetic sound the diegetic sound was also used very effectively to express character emotions, in
particular Ben s emotions. Ben s disconnect from society as a whole could have been discovered in the
scene in which his father is having him present his birthday present; the use of sound was so strong it
would not be difficult to completely understand the scene even without the visuals.

We know that he wants to be heard, but is brushed to the side. We also can assume that he is locked in
this scuba gear but is unable to make any verbal communication nor is he able to accept any verbal
communication. The plunge into the water could have signified a parallel to his actual feelings. He is
now completely disconnected from anyone around him and when he tries to resurface to get back to
the world something forces him to go back under once again prohibiting his ability to speak for
himself, much like how he was repeatedly disregarded and pushed away by his father earlier in the
scene. Finally when we open our eyes up we see that everything assumed from just the audio is pretty
true. In fact we learn that it was his father who kept pushing him under the water and preventing him
to resurface where the rest of the party was.
In my other movie watching endeavors I have found that being underwater is very symbolic of a
disconnection from society. One example in particular is found in the movie Old School in which Will
Ferrell s character is hit with a tranquilizer dart and ends up trying to get help from the people at the
party he is at but inadvertently falls into a swimming pool. Interestingly enough the song The Sound
of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel begins to play. I found this interesting because The Graduate also
uses the same song at other points to illustrate Ben s inability to communicate with the outside world.
I think that had

It has one nose landing gear leg and two main landing gear legs that are placed under the wing and
retract into the fuselage. 1.1.1 Tricycle gear layout The tricycle gear (figure 1.1) consists of one nose
landing gear leg and two main landing gear legs. When using a tricycle gear, around 13% of the total
weight of the airplane acts down on the nose landing gear and 87% acts down on the main landing
gear. The weight distribution depends on the position of the center of gravity. The center of gravity on
the A320 must be between 17% and 38, 5% on the Mean Aerodynamic Chord (MAC). The location of
the MAC can be calculated using the aircraft s dimensions . Figure 1.1 Airbus 320 Landing gear

aircraft s longitudinal axis is not parallel to the runway. The drag created by the two main gear wheels
is parallel to the motion direction (figure 1.2). This means there is no momentum created however the
drag that works on the two main gear wheels to the side creates a negative momentum. This
momentum turns the aircraft parallel to the runway again. Fig 1.2 Tricycle gear Another advantage of
the tricycle gear is that the aircraft is in a horizontal position when parked on the ground. Unlike the
conventional landing gear configuration which has a tail wheel instead of a nose wheel. With the tail

Origins Criminal Behavior
Origins of Criminal Behavior
Tara Olivarez
University of the Rockies
Abstract
We spend a large amount of time learning. It should be important to know something about it.
Everyone is a learner, and everyone is also a teacher. Even as small children will show another child
how to play a game. Most social process theories assume behavior (good or bad) is learned behavior
which means that even criminal behavior can be learned through social interactions.
Origins of Criminal Behavior
In all connections with learning, we find ourselves learning to like or dislike. The learning process is
very complex, when we consider the large variety of idea, viewpoints, values and bits of information
people have. A great deal of learning is a matter of association or conditioning. Criminal behavior has
and will always be a large focus for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

There s no doubt that Margaret Thatcher s time as Prime Minister changed the way Britain saw itself
and how it was seen on the international stage, but what can be debated is whether or not she was
elected due to her own party s strengths, or the weaknesses of the opposition. The years before and
during Thatcher s time were fraught for the country, with inflation running high and lots of discontent,
displayed not only through strikes but also the via ballot boxes. Thatcher first came to power with a
majority of 43 seats for her first government in May 1979, which rose to 144 seats in June 1983 and in
June 1987 she received her third victory with a 100 seat margin, a sharp drop from 1983 but still a
comprehensive victory. A majority of 144

Boston Celtics Case Analysis
The Boston Celtics earned a successful 2018 season despite tragic injuries and a game 7 Eastern
Conference Finals loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Boston s current contract situation should provide
more success in the future. Two superstars, veterans, and young talent make them one of the most
concrete organizations in the league, not to mention their foundation is laid for a few more years. The
Celtics player contracts are led by Gordan Hayward, who signed a 4 year max contract in the 2017
offseason. He suffered a tragic left ankle fracture in the season opener debut with the Celtics, forcing
him to miss the 2017 2018 season. This was an unavoidable financial downfall, but with more years
on the contract they still have opportunities with Hayward in the future. Breakout talent Terry Rozier
will be going into free agency in the 2018 2019 off season, potentially leaving the Celtics if they
cannot pay the expected high dollar amount to sign Rozier again. Gritty and forceful Aron Baynes is
also expected to explore free agency in the 2018 off season which could leave the team without the ...

The Nature of Thought in Joyce Essay
The Nature of Thought in Joyce
Thought is a problem in Joyce s work. His characters obscure trains of thought and remembrance
constantly challenge the reader to keep up. I will argue that the depths of this obscurity are not, in fact,
murky; they are a response to his introspection about the nature of thought, and reflect a coherent
theory. Joyce often repeats phrases, and he makes such repetitions noticeable in order to direct the
reader to the questions: What is thought? And what are the unconscious processes of the mind? His
characters are unpredictable, experiencing truly surprising emotional reactions. This unexpectedness
adds depth and verisimilitude to characterization; as in life, the strongest emotional experiences are
ones ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he makes the speech, the comparison between his aunts and the Three Graces pleases them very
much. He decides that, since his speech has been so successful, it would be safer not to risk offense,
and hastens to his close (139). The events of the story, and not so much Gabriel, are the reason he
chooses to leave the quotation out.
There is another factor that contributes to his willingness to drop the verses: he has already
accomplished his aim of working in Browning, by spontaneously borrowing from his own review of
the poet s recent work: But we are living in a skeptical and, if I may use the phrase, a thought
tormented age (138). His original words were One feels that one is listened to a thought tormented
music (130). Because the article is on Gabriel s mind (after his confrontation with Miss Ivors), the
phrase thought tormented is there for him to use. The fact that he does preface it with if I may use the
phrase suggests that he is aware of what he is doing.
However, Gabriel makes two other crucial word choices that are unconscious but telling. They are
apparent under a close reading, and even produce a vague feeling of familiarity under casual reading.
Gabriel s cousin Mary Jane says, as Gabriel and Gretta prepare to leave, I read this morning in the
newspapers that the snow is general all over Ireland (144). And in conversation at dinner, Mary Jane

Greeting To An American Essay
There are certain customs based on the specific country a person should follow when entering a
country that is not familiar with them. This means that if a person is about to operate or visit a country,
they should study their specific customs so there isn t any miscommunication. For example, when
greeting someone, man to man, a handshake with the right hand is a common form and will possibly
linger a bit during the conversation. To women to women, a verbal greeting or even a handshake is
also common. Between a man and woman, verbal greetings are also welcome, along with a handshake
in a more formal or business situation. In Senegal, greetings are very important and questions about
your health, family, and different pleasantries. When greeting someone, do not rush the greeting and
hold a positive relationship. This is due to personal relationships being an important factor. ... Show

The Human Development Index And Gini Coefficient
Despite the fact that Brazil s Gross Domestic Product is one of the highest globally, Brazil still faces
developmental issues in their economy. As Stiglitz has mentioned prior to his overall research, it is
clear to see that Brazil has benefited tremendously from globalization . With a GDP of $2.346 trillion ,
this shows the output of goods and services have helped the country bring in more revenue to help
stabilization. Although there is an increase in GDP, both the Human Development Index and Gini
coefficient is still at an all time low despite the growth. Brazil s HDI is ranked seventy five compared
to other states (which shows that money is not being distributed in the proper places because
corruption is a still a major issue); the Gini coefficient is another factor of corruption (52.9 ). Since the
GDP is $2.346, you would expect for the income of the individuals (the Gini coefficient) to be just as
high, but in this region, wealth is not being distributed evenly. In this paper you will see how the
transformation from Mercantilism to Capitalism has effected Brazil, including the extent of
government involvement in the economy. As an illustration, Brazil has had the chance to jump on the
boat in comparison to China, and India as a result of development as mentioned by Collier . As for the
notion of the resource curse, Brazil is not effected much by it now as compared to previous years
before. For example, in the mid 17th century when Brazil was the leading distributor

The Growth Of Robots In The Robot Invasion By Charlie Gillis
In the article, The Robot Invasion by Charlie Gillis, the author discusses how robots have grown from
the early 1990 s, to the present, and what is expected in the future. He discusses how the beginning of
robotics went from simple robots to more complex robots. For example, Andrew Vardy, a computer
science professor, recently created toy sized robots that could see and was able to sort pucks by color
(Gillie, 2012, p. 478). The biggest challenge faced with the growth of robots is the capability to
respond to changes in the surroundings. However, there is hope for robots evolving because James
McLurkin, a professor from Rice University, programmed robots smaller than a hamburger with
simple combinations of tasks like following the leader, escaping deadlocks, and even cleaning floors
of bread crumbs (p.479) Since 2005, a Massachusetts based company Kiva Systems, has been selling
automated warehouse systems using hundreds of robots that are able to get merchandise from storage
to shipping (p. 479). The warehouse system can triple distribution productivity. Humanoid robots are
being used by the military field, due to their high market price. Baxter, is the first humanoid industrial
use robot available for approximately $22,000.00. Many people are skeptical about the growth in
technology, when it comes to robots, because they fear they could replace jobs that humans perform.
Thomas Frey, an American Futurist, doesn t look at robots taking over human jobs. He sees
advancements for humans to adapt to the future of robots, as robot designers, engineers, and
dispatchers. He feels humans and robots can grow together. The future with robots can be helpful for
humans but can also be a scary situation for people to handle. The article was persuasive to me
because of the many strengths, Charlie Gillis, suggested in the article The Robot Invasion is evidence
that robots have grown through the years and will continue to grow with the future. For example, we
are going from small toy sized robots that can see, to human like droid robots capable of performing
tasks that are difficult for humans to do. Recently, a California based company announced it would
spend $3.1 million to develop farm robots capable

What Is The Critical Criticism Of Waiting For The Barbarians
3. J.M. Coetzee s Waiting for the Barbarians
3.1 Critical Discourse Analysis
In Coetzee s slim novel Waiting for the Barbarians, the author focuses on the abiding problems of man
s malicious treatment of men and women. During the composition of Coetzee s third novel, the anti
apartheid activist Stephen Biko was murdered in prison. The subsequent media coverage of the public
inquiry provided Coetzee with his theme for Waiting for the Barbarians; The effects of totalitarianism
and torture on the life of liberal conscience [and] the simultaneous processes of distancing and
homecoming (Attwell 201). Throughout the novel, the Magistrate is repulsed, and questions, the acts

Eventually, the Magistrate realizes that true reciprocation between him and the barbarian girl proves to
be impossible, and he makes the determination of taking her back to her own Place. This literary
cocktail invented by Coetzee in Waiting for the Barbarians is incredibly powerful: an intricate merger
of cultural Otherness, an idiosyncratic sexual desire involving a tortured body, and an Empire
teetering on the brink of collapse. What is more, the Magistrate s decision to bring the barbarian girl
back to her own Place, has far reaching implications for himself, and subsequently positions him upon
his return to the frontier, in the role of the Other: There is not one face among them that I recognize,
their eyes are stony, they do not answer my questions but march us back like prisoners through the
open gates (Coetzee, WftB 82). During his incarceration, the Magistrate has ample opportunity for self
reflection, or more eloquently put his self recriminating psychology; I wanted to do what was right, I
wanted to make reparation: I will not deny this decent impulse, however mixed with more
questionable motives: there must always be a place for penance and reparation (Coetzee, WftB 88).
The old Magistrate feels like he is turning into an animal and eventually escapes from captivity, but
having nowhere else to go he returns to his cell. Finally, Colonel Joll returns from his military
expedition into the barbaric lands, bringing back twelve miserable captives, to prove to his children
that the barbarians are real (Coetzee, WftB 113). The colonialist inclinations, which are attached to the
barbarians, are described in a diabolically literal

Migration Problems for Puerto Ricans
Puerto Rico is a Spanish speaking region made up of one big island and a few smaller islands in the
Caribbean Sea. It belongs to the U.S as an unincorporated territory. It was a place where the country s
constitution does not apply by default. Puerto Ricans are considered Americans. If you are
automatically born in Puerto Rico, you are automatically a U.S citizen. They use U.S passports to
travel internationally. Some people are inclined to view the Puerto Rican experience as a historical
repetition of earlier migrations to the United States. However, the migration experience of Puerto
Ricans to the United States is more complex, as well as one of a kind. Similarities do exist between
the migration of Puerto Ricans and that of other groups, however, no other ethnic group has shared the
tribulations of the Puerto Rican population. Their experience is different from that of anyone else.
When Puerto Ricans migrated to the United States they did it in two major waves. The first wave of
emigration occurred in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The second wave
occurred from the 1940s to the present. The workings of Bernando Vega and Jose Cruz deal with the
different generations of Puerto Ricans that these two waves brought to the United States. While Vega
discusses the early emigration of Puerto Ricans to New York City, Cruz discusses the later emigration
of Puerto Ricans to Connecticut. Each author describes a different Puerto Rican experience in the

National and regional HDRs aiming to address varying categories of threats and values can use the
human security approach in analyzing the topic. Previous reports based on the human security
approach have, for example, dealt with social exclusion, modernization and climate change; they have
used examples where the State has been a threat; or explored possible future threats. Human security
is a flexible approach and can be tailored to different contexts and topics, according to the specific
context. No matter which topic is addressed, a guiding principle of the human security approach is that
it requires understanding the particular threats experienced by particular groups of people, as well as
the participation of those people in the analysis process. Threats to human security can exist at all
levels of development. They can emerge slowly and silently or appear suddenly and dramatically.
Central to the approach is the idea that people have the right to live in freedom and dignity, free from
poverty and despair... with an equal opportunity to enjoy all their rights and fully develop their human
potential. 3

Bob Fosse s 1972 Cabaret
Prior to World War I, German cinema was a thriving industry being seen across Europe and North
America. Various European cultures of the 1920s embraced new ideas and artistic styles called
expressionism that focused on experimental fields of expression and looking into the future. In Bob
Fosse s 1972 musical Cabaret, the flamboyant world of art appears under the intimidating Nazi era.
This film follows the German Expressionism trend as seen through its avant garde style and sense of
emotion. The editing techniques, featured art, and deeper meaning all testify to the German
Expressionism era.
During the 1920s, German Expressionism emerged because of the number of related artistic
movements beginning in Germany that reached an all time high in Berlin, where nightlife was
booming. These expressive movements impressed the multicultural European culture in fields such as:
architecture, painting, sculpting, and film. A crucial notion in the movement was to portray the world
in an emotionally distorted perspective to evoke different moods and participate in new philosophies.
Physical reality was not a concern during this movement. Popular story plots of the Expressionist
films often involved situations concerning madness, betrayal, and insanity, all which can be found in
Cabaret. This obscure style of filmmaking was brought to America when the Nazis gained political
power and a number of German filmmakers immigrated to Hollywood.

The Learning Styles Inventory ( Lsi )
In EDCL 5339, Understanding Self, I took the Learning Styles Inventory (LSI). The results showed
that my confirmed strengths are Oppositional, Power, Competitive and Perfectionist. I do not
demonstrate strong Oppositional self. I tend to keep an open mind and am willing to listen to others
opinion. Sometimes, I feel I go along with what others want easily. In my close relationships, I am
more opinionated than I am with my colleagues. I would like to develop the ability to be more
analytical and ask tough questions. I think this is an important skill of a leader. As for my lower
Power, Competitive and Perfectionist self, I am content with who I am in those areas. I am a team
player and I work well with individuals. I would not want to change a thing. I am not interested in
controlling or one upping others. I enjoy working with others and celebrating their achievements,
along with mine.
My areas of unrecognized strengths are Humanistic/Encouraging, Affiliate, Conventional and
Achievement. I believe that the biggest issue for me in this area is my tendency to over analyze my
actions and reactions. I do not have full confidence in myself. In the area of Humanistic/Encouraging,
I feel that I have good people skills. I can get along with people well and if there is an issue, I
approach it with tact. Outside of the work place, I believe that I do this well. In the work place, I m

Essay on Gathering the Facts at the Crime Scene
The excitement of watching a beautiful well dressed medical examiner or forensic examiner in stiletto

homicides is not as one would see on their favorite police show. As mention previous, the intrigue
with police shows on television make it difficult to found a jury that have not seen those type show.
Therefore, the court system has a problem obtaining a guilty verdict because jurors wrongfully acquit
guilty defendants when no scientific evidence has been presented, as they have seen on television. As

Big Boy s History And The 5c Framework
Introduction
Representatives from Northlich and Frisch s expressed that over the 40 year life of the Frisch s Big
Boy brand, Frisch s has neglected managing their marketing strategy and research. As a result, Frisch s
marketing style has remained relatively unchanged for decades. Frisch s seeks to attract consumers in
the millennial cohort. To implement the changes required to appeal to this new market, Frisch s will

Brand recognition is a powerful asset for these firms. To maintain recognition and manage cultural
shifts, franchises in the full service sector often make subtle changes to their logos over time. These
slight changes go unnoticed by the seasoned consumers, but appeal to emerging consumer segments
and modern perceptions (see Appendix A). Northlich s makeover initiatives for Frisch s are valuable,
positive changes to open the Frisch s aesthetic to new audiences (see Figure 1). Unfortunately, these
changes did not occur over an extended period of time and are immediately visible for all consumers.
These changes have faced opposition from older consumers as a result. Frisch s traditional marketing

original marketing strategies were implemented. Changes, like up dating the Big Boy mascot, are

Native Language And American Culture
I was born and raised in America, my native language is English, I love rock music and American
food; people often think I am white because of the way I look and act. However, my ethnicity is
Hispanic American. My parents were born and raised in El Salvador, I have only been there once
when I was younger and I remember it like it was yesterday. I was hit with a bit of culture shock
because there were things I was not used to. As a kid, my Spanish was not that great so being in a
country where everyone speaks perfect Spanish and little to no English was difficult. If we wanted to
ride the bus it would not come to a full stop instead you would have to hop on while someone helped
you up. People often walked around with huge guns for protection and every restaurant, even the fast
food places, had a doorman with a gun. I was only there for two weeks and the first few days I showed
a bit of ethnocentrism because I was not used to those kind of things. In America the majority speak
English, guns are usually illegal, and busses usually stop for you to get on so experiencing all these
new things all at once was a bit overwhelming. But, after getting used to it I expressed cultural
relativism and accepted it and even thought it was cool. In El Salvador being American makes you the
minority group, but in America it is the opposite. Some Americans create these stereotypes about
Hispanics saying that we are all lazy, are criminals, or only work blue collar jobs. I have had people

Short Story Sucker
Identity is who we are, even though it can be hard sometimes to find out exactly what that means. That
is why our identities can be so easily changed and shaped by different things. This is especially true
during our adolescent years, when we are vying for acceptance from others. Sometimes we are the
ones who shape who we are. This can happen when we choose to ignore outside influences who
would normally affect us. Nevertheless, most of the time we are shaped by other people. Human
beings have a never ending want to be socially accepted. We are all insecure in our own way, leaving
us prey to the influence of others. We are able to choose how we act and what we do, but even so we
end up being changed by everyone who surrounds us. Although we have the freedom to make our own
conscious decisions, ultimately the people around us shape who we are by the way they treat us. Even
though we choose how we act towards others, we are strongly influenced by the people around us and
how they behave towards us. The short story Sucker is about a teenage boy named Pete who shares a
room with his younger cousin Sucker. Pete always teases Sucker, and this only gets worse after Pete
gets a girlfriend. His girlfriend, Maybelle, becomes the root of the problems and good times between
Sucker and Pete. This quote from the exposition of the story foreshadows the relationship Pete has
with both Sucker and Maybelle. If a person admires you a lot you despise him and don t care and it is

one infantry unit ran into while on deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. The book is a documentation,
captured accounts and events written down to tell the crazy story these soldiers went through. The
specific unit Frederick writes about and what Black Hearts is about is 2nd brigade of the 101st
airborne infantry division. Black Hearts was the unofficial insignia of 2nd brigade. Frederick covers
one platoon in particularly and their ethical dilemmas they encounter while on deployment. 1st

This unit was practicing improper procedures for their soldiers were drinking, doing drugs, and
visiting local brothels. From a tactical stand point the 48th infantry was no better in this aspect either.
The patrols they conducted were inadequate and performed far from often. The area supposed to be
under their control became dangerous because the insurgents moving in the area were virtually
unchallenged. This was no feat for the 101st and 1st platoon because the 101st is a tactically sound
unit that could establish control and a presence in the area but for soldiers that had to do so upon
arrival when it was supposed to be maintained is not necessarily a good thing. The company
commander of bravo, Cpt. Goodwin decided the best way to take back control of their area of
operations is to have a three station cycle for his company. Each platoon would have a twenty one day
rotation at a different location carrying out a different task. The three tasks were to set up TCP on a
main roads, set up a FOB and be the quick reaction force for the other platoons, and the third task was
to patrol the city as per guidance from higher. The least liked job was manning the TCP s. The soldiers
did not like this job because they knew soldiers sitting in the open made for easy targets. The task of
patrolling was no easy feat either, as stated earlier the previous unit left the city in poor conditions.

Persuasive Essay On The Right To Privacy
According to Merriam Webster dictionary, privacy is the quality or state of being apart from company
or observation, moreover, it is the freedom from unauthorized intrusion. In 1776, John Adams wrote
that it had been the British right to search houses without justification that sparked the fight for
independence. In other words, John Adams thought that it was an unjustified violation of privacy
which kindled one of history s most noteworthy revolutions. Despite the fact that nowhere in the U. S.
Constitution does it express the right to privacy, today, the debate and controversy surrounding the
right to privacy are debated endlessly. Privacy s definition has never changed, however, its meaning
continues to evolve. Today, acts of terrorism, unjust searches, and mass surveillance influence privacy
s definition and the regulation of collection, access, and use of personal information by private and
public actors. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the privacy standards serve to guarantee freedom
and autonomy rather than unduly restricting it. Today s debate on privacy is much different than
during the founding of independence while the concern and controversy are comparable.
The concept of privacy innately spawns from many early writings firstly in the writings of Aristotle, in
which he distinctly defines the differences between the public sphere of politics and political activity,
the Polis, and the private or domestic sphere of the family, known as the Oikos. The two

The Ways Of Today s Society
The ways of today s society are a trap to the common child. One cannot go out in public without
seeing at least one child using some form of technology. When most are used to seeing children
playing in their front yards or on a playground as they once did, they have a sudden awakening when
they realize, most children are not like that anymore. Modern culture is a corruption to one s
childhood and causes a child to be unsocial, unhealthy, and constantly pressured to follow the newest
trends in social media, however, certain TV shows and websites have been known to try and educate
children. Because of modern technology, kids are becoming more and more unsocial. Instead of

Children are not able to develop the social skills that they are supposed to when they do not get out
and play with other adolescents or even interact with their own family. Because of the fact that kids
are sitting inside for so long, they often become quite unhealthy. As someone sits there for a while,
they feel the urge to snack on foods. Most often, the foods they are snacking on are junk food. Since
they are looking mindlessly at a screen, children find themselves subconsciously eating. Junk food
such as chips and candy can become addictive and it is difficult to stop eating once started. Not only
does the food they eat cause the children to be unhealthy, but they are also not getting out and being
physically active. Children s developing sensory, motor, and attachment systems have biologically not
evolved to accommodate this sedentary, yet frenzied and chaotic nature of today s technology. Young
children require 2 3 hours per day of active, rough and tumble play to achieve adequate sensory
stimulation to their vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile systems. Tactile stimulation received through
touching, hugging and play is critical for the development of praxis, or planned movement patterns
(The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child). It is necessary for children to be physically
active and play, as it helps with their physical and mental development.

Ambiguity In Dubious Battle
Ambiguity is defined as the quality of being open to more than one interpretation. In fiction, it leads
readers to consider various conclusions and provokes them to go beyond the text itself. In Dubious
Battle exemplifies this. John Steinbeck ensures that every character, every conflict, and every theme
incorporates some form of ambiguity. Not only does this provoke the reader to think beyond the socio
economic problems directly expressed within the text, but it also sparks questions regarding the main
purpose of writing the novel. Steinbeck achieves this by giving insight regarding the ambiguous nature
of the characters themselves. For example, it is never clear who the protagonist is due to the vague
nature of both Mac and Jim. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Doc perfectly characterizes this by suggesting that Mac is an actor (66). Mac, quickly rebuts by stating
that his speech has a kind of feel to it, to imply he does not try to do it (66). Nonetheless, by
implementing Mac within certain important scenes of the stories, Steinbeck always gives the
impression that Mac is the master orchestrator at every turn, and further showing that he would
sacrifice anyone to reach his ambitions. As a result, his ambiguous nature is essential to follow in
order to foreshadow any new development that occurs throughout the plot line. Any individual would
follow Mac s lead because of how he framed himself to be an altruistic person. Moreover, his ability
to dictate both London and Dakin throughout the story demonstrates his ability to lead behind the
scenes. All of these examples suggest how Mac is the protagonist within the story and he was the
central character to analyze and understand. This was the thought process that carries through until the
shift of balance in power between Mac and Jim. Mac s body and muscles shuddered, after he had
beaten the kid to send a message regarding tampering with the strike (214). He invokes violence once
again in order to rile up the workers, but this time, it struck something inside of him, leaving his face
pale and grey (214). He and London were both taken by what transpires, but the one individual who

Cyra Malfadden On Language Summary
In the article On Language; IN DEFENSE OF GENDER, author Cyra McFadden is trying to start a
discussion on how our language is primarily male oriented, but does not need to change. McFadden
mocks the variations being made to conform to a gender neutral language, including the use of words
like persons . By mocking the use of the neutral words like persons, it obvious that McFadden is
displeased with the changes of taking masculinity out of everyday language usage. The masculine
undertone of the English language and its unwanted changes are being acknowledged and scrutinized
because, of new gender identifiers in the working class, written language, and our spoken language.

This supports the author s goal because, it brings to life her negative thoughts on people referring to
males and females as persons in order to accommodate the sensitivity of the other gender. I disagree
with McFadden s thoughts on referring to people as persons is ludicrous. By mocking the
accommodation of a new gender sensitive language, it s as if Cyra McFadden is bringing women
down, instead of uplifting us. We live in a time where women can be first responders, on the front
lines of war, and have important political power, yet it is easy to see as a woman that we still have to
fight for equality. This is the reason it is imperative to make the changes towards a gender neutral
language.
McFadden makes it known that the gender variations replaced by he slash she are unwelcome and
distracting. She describes the sound of the words he slash she while being read aloud, as a replay of
the Charles Manson killings. McFadden writes about the literary changes as a distraction saying in
print, those person suffixes and he/she s jump out from the page, as distracting as a cloud of gnats,
demanding that the reader note the writer s virtue (McFadden,

The Key Perspectives On Power And Domination
This essay will aim to assess the key perspectives on power and domination by evaluating research
and studies done by prominent sociologist within the field of power and domination. I shall start by
defining what power actually is within the realm of politics. Power and domination have an important
relationship in the social relations of modern society (p.11). Stewart (2005) cited Parsons (1967) on
the definition power, where he defines power as a comprehensive capacity to secure the performance
of binding obligations by units in an organisation where the obligations are legitimised and they share
the same goals and there is presumption of enforcement by an individual. That is power is achieved
when there is control by an individual over his or her subordinates and used as a tool to be used to
achieve collective goals. Another important definition of power is by prolific sociologist Max Weber
as he defined power as the chance of men to realise their own will in a communal action even against
the resistance of other who are participation in the action (p.522 sociology themes and perspectives).
So in other words weber defines power as the ability for one to get his/her own way even if everyone
around you if opposed to your ideas and goals. So to achieve power one must make it happen through
means of resistance from people opposed to you in order to have the ability to control people around
you. Another notable sociologist Anthony Giddens suggests that the study of power is a

Nikita Sergeyevich Kruschev
Serving as one the most controversial leaders of the Soviet Union during its relatively short existence,
Nikita Sergeyevich Khruschev proved to be a leader capable of transforming a nation. Through his
many alterations to the systems by which the Soviets lived, he managed to increase the standard of
living and productivity of this Communist State. Described as a man of enormous energy and drive, he
was shrewd, tough, earthy, sociable and talkative, and he confidently took colossal gambles in both
foreign and domestic policies. From his Secret Speech and the following De Stalinization of the

He then proceeded to arrest Beria, head of the secret police, and execute him along with six of his
aides. By this time he was the acknowledged head of the Communist party. He quickly rose to the
position of Premier when, in 1956 he forced Malenkov to resign from the position. Following this he
delivered a compelling speech to the people denouncing many of Stalin s actions. He expelled all of
his remaining rivals in June of 1957. The four main rivals, Molotov, Malenkov, Kaganovich, and
Shepilov, were not executed as a responsible action to exhibit Khruschev s compassion and
responsibility in an effort to boost public support. As a result of this political campaign based on
responsibility and compassion, he freed many political prisoners and urged peaceful coexistence with
the West. This process of solidifying his leadership took a long time and was a great risk to him and
his people because of the past popularity and support of Stalin and his ways.
Although he seemed to be steering the Soviet Union in the right direction, his people and colleagues
still viewed him critically. He had begun to realize that a state could not be run with a lot of brain

Reflection Paper On Engineering And Medicine
Today s lectures involved those of Mark McCready and Robert Stevenson. Mr. McCready s lesson
was centered around engineering for medicine. Mr. McCready s presentation gave a very broad
overview of the many different ways engineering and medicine are intertwined. Mr. Stevenson s
lecture was about Electrical Engineering, and went into a fair amount of depth on the field that he
specializes in, which is imagery. Both lectures gave a fair amount of information, one on a broad
spectrum of engineering, and another on a specific part of Electrical engineering. Mr. McCready s
presentation outlined how engineering benefits medicine in many ways. He began by talking about
how humans consume oxygen rather than other compounds to function. This is because aerobic
digestion is seventeen times more energetic than anaerobic digestion. We then said that the main
issues for humanity at the time are healthcare, energy, and the environment. Since engineers are
problem solvers, it is natural that engineers are working to advance healthcare and medicine.
Engineers have contributed new devices, better systems, ways to treat things, ways to regenerate
tissue, and increased understanding of diseases to medicine. We then talked about a few engineers
who have contributed a lot to medicine throughout the courses of their careers. Bob Langer, a
professor and researcher for MIT, helped develop skin replacement, as well as tissue engineering for
hearts and livers. Next we talked about Adam Heller from

Handgun Training Case Study
Law enforcement countries in the U.S. has implemented deadly force training because they are
indispensable, especially when an officer is faced with danger in the field. Departments across the
U.S., created their own approach when dealing with deadly force, which affects their best practice
(Morrison,2006). It is proven that almost 23% of departments in the U.S. hold handgun sessions from
at least 5 to 12 times a year (Morrison,2006).
It is imperative that police officers are highly trained to perform not only safely but also appropriate
and efficiently (Morrison Garner, 2011). Handgun training was not always mandatory in law
enforcement agencies, in fact U.S. police departments did not provide training at all from the start of

could say that it was the most unsupported war in this country s history. One of the many battles that
occurred during the war was the Battle of Hamburger Hill. Although it was a very short battle, some
would say that this battle was very unnecessary and a waste of manpower. Hamburger Hill, also
known as hill 937, was a ten day battle fought in the A Shau Valley from May 10 20 1969. Hamburger
Hill was given its name by the soldiers who fought in that battle because of how gruesome and bloody
it was, it reminded them of a meat grinder. Also, this battle closely resembeled a battle during the
Korean War called the Battle of Pork Chop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lt. Colonel Honeycutt, commander of 3/187, ordered two of his companies to the north and northwest
ridges of the hill. Bravo company started pushing up the hill while meeting large amounts of North
Vietnamese soldiers. Because of the resistance, they called in close air support to aid in moving up the
hill. Miscommunication caused the air support to confuse the landing zone for an NVA camp resulting
in them opening fire and killing two and injuring thirty five of their own. Unfortunately, this was the
first but not the last friendly fire incident during this battle. The thick vegetation caused for so much
miscommunication and inability to properly identify targets. Honeycutt continued to launch assaults
against the NVA. Theses assaults would face heavy resistance with many casualties. Lt. Colonel
Conmey, commander of the 1st Battalion 506th Infantry regiment shifted his assaults to the southern
base of the hill. American pushes were caused to fall short due to the thick vegetation, this also
effected the capabilities of the American s heavy weapons. Those hindrances gave huge advantages to
the NVA. Because of all the vegetation, they called in approximately 270 Air Strikes in a ten day
period. These strikes dropped 890 tons of explosives and 115 tons of napalm. These air strikes and
napalm eliminated many of the NVA bunkers and trenching system (Hickman,

Slope On Calculus
How can I better facilitate my students understanding of slope (rate of change) while taking calculus?
Introduction
Slope is a very important foundational and abstract mathematical topic that emerges in the secondary
mathematics curricula. It is a topic applied in many fields, including the sciences, but its conceptual
development marks a significant transition to advanced mathematical courses as in the study of
calculus. By definition, calculus is the study of change and motion. In a calculus class, a conceptual
understanding of slope is extremely crucial because it allows for the study of abstract concepts that
rely on application of slope as a rate of change. However, beginning students studying calculus have
difficulty conceptualizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that students can read the slope of a linear function using or/and compute the slope using
the famous slope formula . However, their understanding of slope as a rate of change (Q1) and slope
as a real life application (Q3) is Basic and Far Below Basic. Obviously, there is a continuous emphasis
on the procedural interpretation of slope, rather than a conceptual development. In addition, students
do not have a strong understanding that slope and rate of change are the same and can be used
interchangeably. It seems that they see slope and rate of change as two separate concepts.
Furthermore, most students had difficulty describing the importance of using slope in certain cases vs.
using rate of change in certain cases. Again, slope and rate of change are taken as two different

Descriptive Essay On Mexican Mayan Temple
5 Must see Mexican Mayan Temples
Without a doubt, one of the most visually stunning and physically overwhelming things I ve come
across on my travels are the ancient temples of Central America. In this article, I m going to delve into
some of the ones I was lucky enough to experience. Now, it s important to point out early on, that this
is by no means a list of the best temples and covers only a very, very small portion of a vast expansive
network of temples scattered across the continent. However, this is a list of my personal favourites and
of temples, I would highly recommend anyone in the area (or thinking of going to the area) visits.
Tulum
In many senses, Tulum has it all. White beaches, crystal clear water, friendly locals and to top it all
off, overlooking the serene beach, a Mayan temple. Situated on the Yucatán Peninsula ... Show more

Teotihuacán The Valley of the Dead, Temple of the Feathered Serpent, Pyramid of the Moon and The
Pyramid of the Sun. All spectacles in their own right. All undoubtedly must sees , but all in one place?
Teotihuacan.
The place with all of this and much more sits approximately 25 miles Northeast of Mexico City, in the
San Juan Teotihuacán municipality. Covering a total surface area of 32 square miles and with an
estimated population of more than 125,000 at its peak, Teotihuacán is a goliath complex which
consists of multiple elements. Including an impressive array of temples. Predictably, when you step
foot on the Avenue of the Dead and you gaze down the wide expansive pathways at the Pyramids of
the Moon Sun, you feel small. Very small. The reason being, not only is the Pyramid of the Sun the
third largest in the world (after Cholula Giza) but further down the valley overshadowing The Moon is
the mountain Cerro

When You Know How To Win In Sports Betting
If you watch a lot of sports, or if you absolutely devour the sports section of the newspaper, then you
may consider yourself to be somewhat knowledgeable on the subject. You may even think that you
know better than some of the major sports pundits. However, whenever you have turned your hand to
sports betting, you have only ever managed to make a small amount compared to those who bet in the
big league. You may even have found that you lost money by betting too much at the wrong odds or at
the wrong time. Although you may be an expert at sports, you just don t know how to win in sports
betting. The best piece of sports betting advice which you can learn is that you need to understand the
math of betting, as well as understanding the sports behind the bet. Understanding the odds will help

Even if you hear some fantastic sounding football picks, it could be a risky bet if you do not know
much about football. Stick with sports picks for the sports which you know, or be prepared to put in a
lot of time learning about other sports before you stake. If you are going to make high stakes bets, be
prepared to put in a lot of research. However, if you don t have time to do the research for yourself,
you should consider taking the advice of a professional betting service, which will be offer you the
best picks as well as giving advice on betting related money management. If you do decide to use a
handicapping service or sports betting tipster, make sure you use a reliable one with a clearly proven
track record, or you could end up being scammed AND losing money by following pointless tips.
Lastly, you should make sure that you only bet what you can afford. Never bet money that you don t
have, and never bet money that you need for something else. Although you may think that you are
practically guaranteed to win, in the world of professional betting, there is always the chance that you

Gilded Age During The Gilded Age
1880 1928 The Gilded Age in America ranges from 1880 to 1928 and can be understood simply by
acknowledging that the wealthy dominated the poor in all aspects of life. American history during the
Gilded Age can be further examined particularly in two ways, socially and economically. Establishing
the understanding and connection between protection of the people, the type of government being
practiced, and the concept of efficiency will allow for an educated assessment of this time and will
highlight policies and practices that America should be looking at to succeed as it moves forward. At
this time, there was little to no protection of people that were not wealthy business men such as
Andrew Carnegie and William Graham Sumner who both make cases in favor of social Darwinism.
Business men of this time believed that they were wiser than the poor and that if the workers
diligently tried, they could be rich as well(PS26). This was not a valid way to look at how society was
going because of unsafe working conditions and low wages. Large scale business owners held a tight
rein on workers, which in turn led to events like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911 where nearly 150
women were killed because they were trapped in a burning building. These women were unable to
leave their workroom because the business owners had locked them in out of fear that the women may
take too long of a break, or steal a shirt they were working on if they had any freedoms in the
workplace. The

Problems Associated With Flood Patterns And Poor Water...
Introduction
The River Churn has various issues associated with flood patterns and poor water quality, affected by
continually changing land use patterns. A bi product is the negative impact that poor water quality has
had on ecology. The main aim therefore was to improve the water quality and biodiversity in order to
meet the demands of EU Legislation, during a three year pilot project. The approach was provided by
the WILD Project (Water with Integrated Local Delivery). The WILD Project was initiated in 2013, by
FWAG (The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group), set within the Cotswold Water Park (FWAG
South West, 2015).
The EU Legislative Body is the Water Framework Directive (WFD) defining a water body as not a
commercial product like any others, but instead a heritage which must be protected, defended and
treated as such (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2000). Under the
Community Water Policy Seminar (1998), the need for Community legislation covering ecological
quality was established. Therefore an integrated Community policy on water was developed, an area
that the WILD Project has incorporated, using an Integrated Local Delivery method integrated with a
Catchment Based Approach . The main objective was achieving the good ecological status on all
surface and groundwater, or in heavily modified sections the river must achieve good ecological
potential (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2000). The

Picasso Change Essay
As Picasso spreads a variety of colors and a ginormous selection of techniques over his canvas, the
changes in his techniques and hues reflect the moving stirring agitations of the day. His emotions may
change to become more piercing or charming depending on the circumstances in his life at the
moment. Change as defined by One Look Dictionary is literally in the verb tense, to become different
or to make someone or something different. When used in its noun form, change can be the money
someone gives you back when you pay more money than an item costs to buy or a process by which
something becomes different, like there is going to be a change in the weather. These are denotative or
literal meanings for the word. There are connotative features ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Don t resist them that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in
whatever way they like. If we start manipulating or trying to control destiny in life we may change the
mysterious flow that controls the way our life should go. Change can be the natural a way of talking or
thinking in an easy natural way, without any pauses or difficulties of life. Things don t have to change
the world to be important. ~ Steve Jobs Importance is relative to the person who is viewing it at a
given moment in time. Change can affect one person and it can be as monumental to that person as a
revolution to the rest of the world. Change can be intimate and personal. Some change is private.
Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world. Knowledge is the foundation of education, and the tool people need to bring about a difference
in the way the world thinks. Mandela is best known for working to free the blacks in South Africa by
battling peacefully for the rights of the people. After years of personal sacrifice fighting for
independence and racial equality, he was voted president and changed South Africa by allowing blacks
and white to vote in government elections and for bringing people of different races

The Building Of Cultures By R. B. Dixon
Similarly, The Building of Cultures (by R. B. Dixon in 1928) began with the lengthy dispute regarding
how one explained alike cultural traits occurring in geographically separate areas (1928, Dixon: 33;
also 182s). It could not be denied that every cultural quality was discovered or invented first. There
was always necessarily a beginning, a first for all. (1928, Dixon: 35). In the chapter Discovery and
Invention , he takes note to separate creation and discovery (conception) according to purpose ,
suggesting the two occur as a sequence: (accidental) conception, then (purposeful) creation. He then
goes on to discuss the factors of each in detail. Conception is made up of identification, opportunity,
and imagination that is appreciated. Invention is either directional or accidental, distinguished as being
an improvement or entirely new(He borrows from the sociologists H. S. Harrison and L. Bernard).
The responsible factors were available knowledge, needs, opportunity, and genius.
Finally, he goes on to discuss diffusion, step three in his sequence: Conceptualization creation
dispersal. In this model, individuals discover or invent and the process is unproductive and without
result until others adopt it . Without duplicating beyond the inventor or discoverer, the new quality
remains personal, an eccentricity, intriguing or entertaining, but not of great importance (1928, Dixon:
59).

  • 2. Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats, Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors with different roles and these actors have to perform to ... John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man (Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle, ... • 3. The Themes In The Shawl By Cynthia Othick The Short Story named The Shawl by Cynthia Othick narrates the survival of a mother, daughter and a niece, during the Holocaust, them being in a concentration camp and participating in death marches. It fits the theme of survival of the fittest as the daughter, named Magda, was forced to adapt to her needs after the mother was not able to do it. Stella, the niece, is a third wheel in the story, she is most of the time ignored by Rosa as she fully concentrates in taking care of Magda, or at least attempting to, and Stella is just left their as somewhat of filling character. The obscurity of Stella is also stated by the author when she says Stella, cold, cold, the coldness of hell (1980) Cynthia Othick, with this information it can be ... • 4. Essay on The Use of Sound in the Graduate The use of sound in The Graduate The movie The Graduate was a pioneer for the film industry in regards to its use of popular music as non diegetic sound throughout the film. The Simon and Garfunkel sound track fit in very nicely to set the tone of the film and give the audience clues as to what the characters were feeling. Aside from the non diegetic sound the diegetic sound was also used very effectively to express character emotions, in particular Ben s emotions. Ben s disconnect from society as a whole could have been discovered in the scene in which his father is having him present his birthday present; the use of sound was so strong it would not be difficult to completely understand the scene even without the visuals. We also can assume that he is locked in this scuba gear but is unable to make any verbal communication nor is he able to accept any verbal communication. The plunge into the water could have signified a parallel to his actual feelings. He is now completely disconnected from anyone around him and when he tries to resurface to get back to the world something forces him to go back under once again prohibiting his ability to speak for himself, much like how he was repeatedly disregarded and pushed away by his father earlier in the scene. Finally when we open our eyes up we see that everything assumed from just the audio is pretty true. In fact we learn that it was his father who kept pushing him under the water and preventing him to resurface where the rest of the party was. In my other movie watching endeavors I have found that being underwater is very symbolic of a disconnection from society. One example in particular is found in the movie Old School in which Will Ferrell s character is hit with a tranquilizer dart and ends up trying to get help from the people at the party he is at but inadvertently falls into a swimming pool. Interestingly enough the song The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel begins to play. I found this interesting because The Graduate also uses the same song at other points to illustrate Ben s inability to communicate with the outside world. I think that had ... It has one nose landing gear leg and two main landing gear legs that are placed under the wing and retract into the fuselage. 1.1.1 Tricycle gear layout The tricycle gear (figure 1.1) consists of one nose landing gear leg and two main landing gear legs. When using a tricycle gear, around 13% of the total weight of the airplane acts down on the nose landing gear and 87% acts down on the main landing gear. The weight distribution depends on the position of the center of gravity. The center of gravity on the A320 must be between 17% and 38, 5% on the Mean Aerodynamic Chord (MAC). The location of the MAC can be calculated using the aircraft s dimensions . Figure 1.1 Airbus 320 Landing gear layout The advantage of the tricycle gear is the stabilizing momentum during touchdown when the aircraft s longitudinal axis is not parallel to the runway. The drag created by the two main gear wheels is parallel to the motion direction (figure 1.2). This means there is no momentum created however the drag that works on the two main gear wheels to the side creates a negative momentum. This momentum turns the aircraft parallel to the runway again. • 6. Origins Criminal Behavior Origins of Criminal Behavior Tara Olivarez University of the Rockies Abstract We spend a large amount of time learning. It should be important to know something about it. Everyone is a learner, and everyone is also a teacher. Even as small children will show another child how to play a game. Most social process theories assume behavior (good or bad) is learned behavior which means that even criminal behavior can be learned through social interactions. Origins of Criminal Behavior In all connections with learning, we find ourselves learning to like or dislike. There s no doubt that Margaret Thatcher s time as Prime Minister changed the way Britain saw itself and how it was seen on the international stage, but what can be debated is whether or not she was elected due to her own party s strengths, or the weaknesses of the opposition. The years before and during Thatcher s time were fraught for the country, with inflation running high and lots of discontent, displayed not only through strikes but also the via ballot boxes. Thatcher first came to power with a majority of 43 seats for her first government in May 1979, which rose to 144 seats in June 1983 and in June 1987 she received her third victory with a 100 seat margin, a sharp drop from 1983 but still a comprehensive victory. Boston s current contract situation should provide more success in the future. Two superstars, veterans, and young talent make them one of the most concrete organizations in the league, not to mention their foundation is laid for a few more years. The Celtics player contracts are led by Gordan Hayward, who signed a 4 year max contract in the 2017 offseason. This was an unavoidable financial downfall, but with more years on the contract they still have opportunities with Hayward in the future. Breakout talent Terry Rozier will be going into free agency in the 2018 2019 off season, potentially leaving the Celtics if they cannot pay the expected high dollar amount to sign Rozier again. • 9. The Nature of Thought in Joyce Essay The Nature of Thought in Joyce Thought is a problem in Joyce s work. His characters obscure trains of thought and remembrance constantly challenge the reader to keep up. I will argue that the depths of this obscurity are not, in fact, murky; they are a response to his introspection about the nature of thought, and reflect a coherent theory. Joyce often repeats phrases, and he makes such repetitions noticeable in order to direct the reader to the questions: What is thought? And what are the unconscious processes of the mind? His characters are unpredictable, experiencing truly surprising emotional reactions. This unexpectedness adds depth and verisimilitude to characterization; as in life, the strongest emotional experiences are ones ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he makes the speech, the comparison between his aunts and the Three Graces pleases them very much. He decides that, since his speech has been so successful, it would be safer not to risk offense, and hastens to his close (139). The events of the story, and not so much Gabriel, are the reason he chooses to leave the quotation out. There is another factor that contributes to his willingness to drop the verses: he has already accomplished his aim of working in Browning, by spontaneously borrowing from his own review of the poet s recent work: But we are living in a skeptical and, if I may use the phrase, a thought tormented age (138). His original words were One feels that one is listened to a thought tormented music (130). Because the article is on Gabriel s mind (after his confrontation with Miss Ivors), the phrase thought tormented is there for him to use. The fact that he does preface it with if I may use the phrase suggests that he is aware of what he is doing. However, Gabriel makes two other crucial word choices that are unconscious but telling. They are apparent under a close reading, and even produce a vague feeling of familiarity under casual reading. This means that if a person is about to operate or visit a country, they should study their specific customs so there isn t any miscommunication. For example, when greeting someone, man to man, a handshake with the right hand is a common form and will possibly linger a bit during the conversation. To women to women, a verbal greeting or even a handshake is also common. Between a man and woman, verbal greetings are also welcome, along with a handshake in a more formal or business situation. • 11. The Human Development Index And Gini Coefficient Despite the fact that Brazil s Gross Domestic Product is one of the highest globally, Brazil still faces developmental issues in their economy. As Stiglitz has mentioned prior to his overall research, it is clear to see that Brazil has benefited tremendously from globalization . With a GDP of $2.346 trillion , this shows the output of goods and services have helped the country bring in more revenue to help stabilization. Although there is an increase in GDP, both the Human Development Index and Gini coefficient is still at an all time low despite the growth. Brazil s HDI is ranked seventy five compared to other states (which shows that money is not being distributed in the proper places because corruption is a still a major issue); the Gini coefficient is another factor of corruption (52.9 ). Since the GDP is $2.346, you would expect for the income of the individuals (the Gini coefficient) to be just as high, but in this region, wealth is not being distributed evenly. In this paper you will see how the transformation from Mercantilism to Capitalism has effected Brazil, including the extent of government involvement in the economy. As an illustration, Brazil has had the chance to jump on the boat in comparison to China, and India as a result of development as mentioned by Collier . As for the notion of the resource curse, Brazil is not effected much by it now as compared to previous years before. For example, in the mid 17th century when Brazil was the leading distributor ... • 12. The Growth Of Robots In The Robot Invasion By Charlie Gillis In the article, The Robot Invasion by Charlie Gillis, the author discusses how robots have grown from the early 1990 s, to the present, and what is expected in the future. He discusses how the beginning of robotics went from simple robots to more complex robots. For example, Andrew Vardy, a computer science professor, recently created toy sized robots that could see and was able to sort pucks by color (Gillie, 2012, p. 478). The biggest challenge faced with the growth of robots is the capability to respond to changes in the surroundings. However, there is hope for robots evolving because James McLurkin, a professor from Rice University, programmed robots smaller than a hamburger with simple combinations of tasks like following the leader, escaping deadlocks, and even cleaning floors of bread crumbs (p.479) Since 2005, a Massachusetts based company Kiva Systems, has been selling automated warehouse systems using hundreds of robots that are able to get merchandise from storage to shipping (p. 479). The warehouse system can triple distribution productivity. Humanoid robots are being used by the military field, due to their high market price. Baxter, is the first humanoid industrial use robot available for approximately $22,000.00. Many people are skeptical about the growth in technology, when it comes to robots, because they fear they could replace jobs that humans perform. Thomas Frey, an American Futurist, doesn t look at robots taking over human jobs. He sees advancements for humans to adapt to the future of robots, as robot designers, engineers, and dispatchers. He feels humans and robots can grow together. The future with robots can be helpful for humans but can also be a scary situation for people to handle. The article was persuasive to me because of the many strengths, Charlie Gillis, suggested in the article The Robot Invasion is evidence that robots have grown through the years and will continue to grow with the future. For example, we are going from small toy sized robots that can see, to human like droid robots capable of performing tasks that are difficult for humans to do. Recently, a California based company announced it would spend $3.1 million to develop farm robots capable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coetzee s Waiting for the Barbarians 3.1 Critical Discourse Analysis In Coetzee s slim novel Waiting for the Barbarians, the author focuses on the abiding problems of man s malicious treatment of men and women. During the composition of Coetzee s third novel, the anti apartheid activist Stephen Biko was murdered in prison. The subsequent media coverage of the public inquiry provided Coetzee with his theme for Waiting for the Barbarians; The effects of totalitarianism and torture on the life of liberal conscience [and] the simultaneous processes of distancing and homecoming (Attwell 201). Eventually, the Magistrate realizes that true reciprocation between him and the barbarian girl proves to be impossible, and he makes the determination of taking her back to her own Place. This literary cocktail invented by Coetzee in Waiting for the Barbarians is incredibly powerful: an intricate merger of cultural Otherness, an idiosyncratic sexual desire involving a tortured body, and an Empire teetering on the brink of collapse. What is more, the Magistrate s decision to bring the barbarian girl back to her own Place, has far reaching implications for himself, and subsequently positions him upon his return to the frontier, in the role of the Other: There is not one face among them that I recognize, their eyes are stony, they do not answer my questions but march us back like prisoners through the open gates (Coetzee, WftB 82). During his incarceration, the Magistrate has ample opportunity for self reflection, or more eloquently put his self recriminating psychology; I wanted to do what was right, I wanted to make reparation: I will not deny this decent impulse, however mixed with more questionable motives: there must always be a place for penance and reparation (Coetzee, WftB 88). The old Magistrate feels like he is turning into an animal and eventually escapes from captivity, but having nowhere else to go he returns to his cell. Finally, Colonel Joll returns from his military expedition into the barbaric lands, bringing back twelve miserable captives, to prove to his children that the barbarians are real (Coetzee, WftB 113). It belongs to the U.S as an unincorporated territory. It was a place where the country s constitution does not apply by default. Puerto Ricans are considered Americans. If you are automatically born in Puerto Rico, you are automatically a U.S citizen. They use U.S passports to travel internationally. Some people are inclined to view the Puerto Rican experience as a historical repetition of earlier migrations to the United States. However, the migration experience of Puerto Ricans to the United States is more complex, as well as one of a kind. Similarities do exist between the migration of Puerto Ricans and that of other groups, however, no other ethnic group has shared the tribulations of the Puerto Rican population. Their experience is different from that of anyone else. When Puerto Ricans migrated to the United States they did it in two major waves. The first wave of emigration occurred in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The second wave occurred from the 1940s to the present. The workings of Bernando Vega and Jose Cruz deal with the different generations of Puerto Ricans that these two waves brought to the United States. While Vega discusses the early emigration of Puerto Ricans to New York City, Cruz discusses the later emigration of Puerto Ricans to Connecticut. • 19. Bob Fosse s 1972 Cabaret Prior to World War I, German cinema was a thriving industry being seen across Europe and North America. Various European cultures of the 1920s embraced new ideas and artistic styles called expressionism that focused on experimental fields of expression and looking into the future. In Bob Fosse s 1972 musical Cabaret, the flamboyant world of art appears under the intimidating Nazi era. This film follows the German Expressionism trend as seen through its avant garde style and sense of emotion. The editing techniques, featured art, and deeper meaning all testify to the German Expressionism era. During the 1920s, German Expressionism emerged because of the number of related artistic movements beginning in Germany that reached an all time high in Berlin, where nightlife was booming. These expressive movements impressed the multicultural European culture in fields such as: architecture, painting, sculpting, and film. A crucial notion in the movement was to portray the world in an emotionally distorted perspective to evoke different moods and participate in new philosophies. Physical reality was not a concern during this movement. Popular story plots of the Expressionist films often involved situations concerning madness, betrayal, and insanity, all which can be found in Cabaret. This obscure style of filmmaking was brought to America when the Nazis gained political power and a number of German filmmakers immigrated to Hollywood. Sometimes we are the ones who shape who we are. This can happen when we choose to ignore outside influences who would normally affect us. Nevertheless, most of the time we are shaped by other people. Human beings have a never ending want to be socially accepted. We are all insecure in our own way, leaving us prey to the influence of others. We are able to choose how we act and what we do, but even so we end up being changed by everyone who surrounds us. Although we have the freedom to make our own conscious decisions, ultimately the people around us shape who we are by the way they treat us. • 29. Persuasive Essay On The Right To Privacy According to Merriam Webster dictionary, privacy is the quality or state of being apart from company or observation, moreover, it is the freedom from unauthorized intrusion. In 1776, John Adams wrote that it had been the British right to search houses without justification that sparked the fight for independence. In other words, John Adams thought that it was an unjustified violation of privacy which kindled one of history s most noteworthy revolutions. Despite the fact that nowhere in the U. S. Constitution does it express the right to privacy, today, the debate and controversy surrounding the right to privacy are debated endlessly. Privacy s definition has never changed, however, its meaning continues to evolve. Today, acts of terrorism, unjust searches, and mass surveillance influence privacy s definition and the regulation of collection, access, and use of personal information by private and public actors. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the privacy standards serve to guarantee freedom and autonomy rather than unduly restricting it. Today s debate on privacy is much different than during the founding of independence while the concern and controversy are comparable. The concept of privacy innately spawns from many early writings firstly in the writings of Aristotle, in which he distinctly defines the differences between the public sphere of politics and political activity, the Polis, and the private or domestic sphere of the family, known as the Oikos. Most often, the foods they are snacking on are junk food. Since they are looking mindlessly at a screen, children find themselves subconsciously eating. In fiction, it leads readers to consider various conclusions and provokes them to go beyond the text itself. In Dubious Battle exemplifies this. John Steinbeck ensures that every character, every conflict, and every theme incorporates some form of ambiguity. Not only does this provoke the reader to think beyond the socio economic problems directly expressed within the text, but it also sparks questions regarding the main purpose of writing the novel. Steinbeck achieves this by giving insight regarding the ambiguous nature of the characters themselves. For example, it is never clear who the protagonist is due to the vague nature of both Mac and Jim. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Doc perfectly characterizes this by suggesting that Mac is an actor (66). Mac, quickly rebuts by stating that his speech has a kind of feel to it, to imply he does not try to do it (66). Nonetheless, by implementing Mac within certain important scenes of the stories, Steinbeck always gives the impression that Mac is the master orchestrator at every turn, and further showing that he would sacrifice anyone to reach his ambitions. As a result, his ambiguous nature is essential to follow in order to foreshadow any new development that occurs throughout the plot line. Any individual would follow Mac s lead because of how he framed himself to be an altruistic person. Moreover, his ability to dictate both London and Dakin throughout the story demonstrates his ability to lead behind the scenes. All of these examples suggest how Mac is the protagonist within the story and he was the central character to analyze and understand. This was the thought process that carries through until the shift of balance in power between Mac and Jim. • 33. The Key Perspectives On Power And Domination This essay will aim to assess the key perspectives on power and domination by evaluating research and studies done by prominent sociologist within the field of power and domination. I shall start by defining what power actually is within the realm of politics. Power and domination have an important relationship in the social relations of modern society (p.11). Stewart (2005) cited Parsons (1967) on the definition power, where he defines power as a comprehensive capacity to secure the performance of binding obligations by units in an organisation where the obligations are legitimised and they share the same goals and there is presumption of enforcement by an individual. That is power is achieved when there is control by an individual over his or her subordinates and used as a tool to be used to achieve collective goals. Another important definition of power is by prolific sociologist Max Weber as he defined power as the chance of men to realise their own will in a communal action even against the resistance of other who are participation in the action (p.522 sociology themes and perspectives). So in other words weber defines power as the ability for one to get his/her own way even if everyone around you if opposed to your ideas and goals. So to achieve power one must make it happen through means of resistance from people opposed to you in order to have the ability to control people around you. This has also led to the governments all over the world becoming more vigilant in their regulation of these organizations. Government restriction, taxes and environmentally sensitive areas are some of the biggest and most expensive hindrances faced by business organizations, costing them millions of dollars. For some cases, it becomes too expensive for companies to be ethical in tackling various obligations. This forces them to change their approach and look for alternative actions. • 37. Reflection Paper On Engineering And Medicine Today s lectures involved those of Mark McCready and Robert Stevenson. Mr. McCready s lesson was centered around engineering for medicine. Mr. McCready s presentation gave a very broad overview of the many different ways engineering and medicine are intertwined. Mr. Stevenson s lecture was about Electrical Engineering, and went into a fair amount of depth on the field that he specializes in, which is imagery. Both lectures gave a fair amount of information, one on a broad spectrum of engineering, and another on a specific part of Electrical engineering. Mr. McCready s presentation outlined how engineering benefits medicine in many ways. He began by talking about how humans consume oxygen rather than other compounds to function. This is because aerobic digestion is seventeen times more energetic than anaerobic digestion. We then said that the main issues for humanity at the time are healthcare, energy, and the environment. Since engineers are problem solvers, it is natural that engineers are working to advance healthcare and medicine. Engineers have contributed new devices, better systems, ways to treat things, ways to regenerate tissue, and increased understanding of diseases to medicine. We then talked about a few engineers who have contributed a lot to medicine throughout the courses of their careers. Bob Langer, a professor and researcher for MIT, helped develop skin replacement, as well as tissue engineering for hearts and livers. Next we talked about Adam Heller from ... • 38. Handgun Training Case Study Law enforcement countries in the U.S. has implemented deadly force training because they are indispensable, especially when an officer is faced with danger in the field. Departments across the U.S., created their own approach when dealing with deadly force, which affects their best practice (Morrison,2006). It is proven that almost 23% of departments in the U.S. hold handgun sessions from at least 5 to 12 times a year (Morrison,2006). It is imperative that police officers are highly trained to perform not only safely but also appropriate and efficiently (Morrison Garner, 2011). Handgun training was not always mandatory in law enforcement agencies, in fact U.S. police departments did not provide training at all from the start of modern policing in the 1840s through the 1910s (Morrison Garner, 2011). However, state police and highway patrol have some collateral duty instructors(Morrison,2006). • 39. Hamburger Hill Essay Many people can attest to the fact that the war in Vietnam was very unpopular and unsupported. One could say that it was the most unsupported war in this country s history. One of the many battles that occurred during the war was the Battle of Hamburger Hill. Although it was a very short battle, some would say that this battle was very unnecessary and a waste of manpower. Hamburger Hill, also known as hill 937, was a ten day battle fought in the A Shau Valley from May 10 20 1969. Hamburger Hill was given its name by the soldiers who fought in that battle because of how gruesome and bloody it was, it reminded them of a meat grinder. Colonel Honeycutt, commander of 3/187, ordered two of his companies to the north and northwest ridges of the hill. Bravo company started pushing up the hill while meeting large amounts of North Vietnamese soldiers. Because of the resistance, they called in close air support to aid in moving up the hill. Miscommunication caused the air support to confuse the landing zone for an NVA camp resulting in them opening fire and killing two and injuring thirty five of their own. Unfortunately, this was the first but not the last friendly fire incident during this battle. The thick vegetation caused for so much miscommunication and inability to properly identify targets. Honeycutt continued to launch assaults against the NVA. Theses assaults would face heavy resistance with many casualties. Lt. Colonel Conmey, commander of the 1st Battalion 506th Infantry regiment shifted his assaults to the southern base of the hill. American pushes were caused to fall short due to the thick vegetation, this also effected the capabilities of the American s heavy weapons. Those hindrances gave huge advantages to the NVA. Because of all the vegetation, they called in approximately 270 Air Strikes in a ten day period. These strikes dropped 890 tons of explosives and 115 tons of napalm. These air strikes and napalm eliminated many of the NVA bunkers and trenching system (Hickman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction Slope is a very important foundational and abstract mathematical topic that emerges in the secondary mathematics curricula. It is a topic applied in many fields, including the sciences, but its conceptual development marks a significant transition to advanced mathematical courses as in the study of calculus. By definition, calculus is the study of change and motion. In addition, students do not have a strong understanding that slope and rate of change are the same and can be used interchangeably. • 45. Gilded Age During The Gilded Age 1880 1928 The Gilded Age in America ranges from 1880 to 1928 and can be understood simply by acknowledging that the wealthy dominated the poor in all aspects of life. American history during the Gilded Age can be further examined particularly in two ways, socially and economically. Establishing the understanding and connection between protection of the people, the type of government being practiced, and the concept of efficiency will allow for an educated assessment of this time and will highlight policies and practices that America should be looking at to succeed as it moves forward. At this time, there was little to no protection of people that were not wealthy business men such as Andrew Carnegie and William Graham Sumner who both make cases in favor of social Darwinism. Business men of this time believed that they were wiser than the poor and that if the workers diligently tried, they could be rich as well(PS26). This was not a valid way to look at how society was going because of unsafe working conditions and low wages. Large scale business owners held a tight rein on workers, which in turn led to events like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911 where nearly 150 women were killed because they were trapped in a burning building. These women were unable to leave their workroom because the business owners had locked them in out of fear that the women may take too long of a break, or steal a shirt they were working on if they had any freedoms in the workplace. • 46. Problems Associated With Flood Patterns And Poor Water... Introduction The River Churn has various issues associated with flood patterns and poor water quality, affected by continually changing land use patterns. A bi product is the negative impact that poor water quality has had on ecology. The main aim therefore was to improve the water quality and biodiversity in order to meet the demands of EU Legislation, during a three year pilot project. The approach was provided by the WILD Project (Water with Integrated Local Delivery). The WILD Project was initiated in 2013, by FWAG (The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group), set within the Cotswold Water Park (FWAG South West, 2015). The EU Legislative Body is the Water Framework Directive (WFD) defining a water body as not a commercial product like any others, but instead a heritage which must be protected, defended and treated as such (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2000). Under the Community Water Policy Seminar (1998), the need for Community legislation covering ecological quality was established. Therefore an integrated Community policy on water was developed, an area that the WILD Project has incorporated, using an Integrated Local Delivery method integrated with a Catchment Based Approach . The main objective was achieving the good ecological status on all surface and groundwater, or in heavily modified sections the river must achieve good ecological potential (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2000). • 48. The Building Of Cultures By R. B. Dixon Similarly, The Building of Cultures (by R. B. Dixon in 1928) began with the lengthy dispute regarding how one explained alike cultural traits occurring in geographically separate areas (1928, Dixon: 33; also 182s). It could not be denied that every cultural quality was discovered or invented first. There was always necessarily a beginning, a first for all. (1928, Dixon: 35). In the chapter Discovery and Invention , he takes note to separate creation and discovery (conception) according to purpose , suggesting the two occur as a sequence: (accidental) conception, then (purposeful) creation. He then goes on to discuss the factors of each in detail. Conception is made up of identification, opportunity, and imagination that is appreciated. Invention is either directional or accidental, distinguished as being an improvement or entirely new(He borrows from the sociologists H. S. Harrison and L. Bernard). The responsible factors were available knowledge, needs, opportunity, and genius. Finally, he goes on to discuss diffusion, step three in his sequence: Conceptualization creation dispersal. In this model, individuals discover or invent and the process is unproductive and without result until others adopt it . Without duplicating beyond the inventor or discoverer, the new quality remains personal, an eccentricity, intriguing or entertaining, but not of great importance (1928, Dixon: 59).
