Over the past 100 years, there have been significant changes in the youth sector that have impacted young people's lives. In the early 1900s, education was becoming more widely available due to acts that required local authorities to provide primary education for all children, though secondary school places were limited. Working class children sometimes had to work to afford school fees. Now, education is free and compulsory until age 16, and there are many more opportunities for further education and vocational training. Public health and social services have also improved, helping young people to be healthier and get support. However, issues still remain regarding youth justice, employment, and social inequality.
