In the excerpt from The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle , Smollett does an excellent job conveying
the social norms of 1751. The passage is driven by mockery and disrespect, yet neither man will let
the tension ruin their reputation. While both men show signs of anger and disrespect, neither one
directly insults the other. As Pickle is confronted about the nature of his and Emilia, he becomes
angry. Yet, Gauntlet had no intentions of offending him. As their conversation continues, the

Presenting on my personal online portfolio was a great experience since not many presentations are
individual based. With many assignments leading up to one major task, students were challenged
throughout the semester to eventually present themselves to a fictitious group of employers.
