Terrorism Amendment 14
Between 2006 2015 terrorism took away a total of 190,198 lives, (Number of casualties due to
terrorism). Combating terrorism means to take action on the unlawful use of violence and
intimidation, usually occurring against civilians. Government shouldn t be limited in combating
terrorism due to the historical impact, past government ruling, and effects on terrorism current day.
Throughout historical evidence government shouldn t be limited to combat terrorism. For instance,
according to amendment 14 no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without the due
process, (Amendments, 1998. Pg.40). When terrorists attack, they are looking to take away our
freedom, and doing that would break amendment 14. Therefore it is necessary ... Show more content

According to oyez.org the Hamdi vs. Rumsfeld case was a case that recognized the power of the US
government to detain enemy combats. When talking about the enemy s, terrorism definitely is an
example of enemy combat . Therefore, the government shall be enabled to combat terrorism.
Moreover, Amendment 4 states that it is the right of the people to be secure in one s personal
belongings (property, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches). When terrorism strikes, they
are technically breaking amendment 4. For that reason government must act on terrorism to protect
one s property. Likewise, amendment 14 is no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or the process
of law, (Amendments, 1998. Pg.40). Government shall act accordingly to all amendments. Part of the
amendments goal is to keep the people safe. Combating terrorism shall not be limited because when
doing that they are protecting us. However, One group that will oppose combating terrorism would be
terrorists themselves. They oppose combating terrorism because it makes their jobs harder. For
example, when the US is sending troops to the middle east to fight terrorism, they will not be able to
attack us when we are fighting them in their country. In conclusion, the government is able to
effectively combat terrorism in various different

Review Of The Overcoat And The Man Who Lived...
Adaptation plays a large role in The Overcoat and The Man Who lived Underground . Bureaucracy
does not affect Akaky because he is used to constant oppression. Daniels initially is oppressed by his
surroundings until he learns to interact with them beneficially. Daniels, unlike Akaky, mentally
transcends all forms of oppression by believing that he is a God. Daniel s transcendence from social
restrictions allows him to live ignorantly in his oppressive world. Akaky and Daniels both interact
with oppressive environments; however, they only experience subjugation from their environments
when they are aware of the oppression. Ignorance of their circumstances allows the two to avoid
experiencing the oppression unless there is a change in their status quo. At first glance, Akaky appears
to be stuck in the bureaucratic system as a mere slave. The system supposedly oppresses him causing
him to be compliant and introverted. He appears to be oppressed by the system causing him to be
compliant and introverted. However, Akaky enjoys his position as a lowly clerk, and actually prefers
to maintain his status rather than climb the ranks in his office to reduce the assumed oppression of the
bureaucratic system. Thus, the individual has some control over whether or not they are oppressed by
their environment or government. Akaky only experiences the oppression from the complex Russian
bureaucracy when he loses his coat. He finds the need to interact with the different levels of the

Stereotypes In Disney Film Pocahontas
Animated films are commonly regarded as innocent and enchanting with little influence on the
ideological beliefs that develop in children. Yet it is evident that this rhetoric is detrimental to the
understanding that children are highly susceptible to influences from film and lack necessary skills to
think critically. Thus, animated films instill ideologies within children that follow them throughout
their lives. The predominant white narrative within the Disney film Pocahontas misrepresents
Indigenous culture by portraying them as savage, bestial, and primitive caricatures while the
falsification of historical events sets to maintain the archetypical white Anglo Saxon supremacy,
creating hegemonic ideologies that decisively impact how Indigenous people are viewed negatively
within society and internally feel Otherized, causing confusion of personal identity. I will begin by
articulating how films provoke fantasy, fears, and social concerns to garner audiences for profitability.
These provocations are rooted in the ideologies of the dominant culture at the expense of Indigenous
peoples. I will then express how the Self (white men) and the Other (Indigenous people) are
segmented within Pocahontas and the effects this has on the relationship of Indigenous people to
society. Next, I will discuss how the false representation of historical events creates cultural hegemony
and reinforces categorization of Indigenous people. Lastly, I will demonstrate that the negative and

Macon Museum of Art Essay
Macon Museum of Art
Macon Museum of Art, a not for Profit Corporation, is facing major financial problems since 2000 and
up till 2002. Actions were needed to stop this cumulative loss and to achieve some profit for 2003.
After reviewing the case at hand, one can see through the brief history of the museum that it was
founded since 1925. In 1998, its name changed into the Jonathon A . Macon Museum of Art, the major
benefactor whose endowment helped expending the facility in the district. The Macon Museum has
different collections which are displayed periodically due to space limitations, but each collection is
set in its building architecture that accents the display. This fact makes it impossible for someone to

The Board of Trustees had to make several projections which led that
2003 is not likely to bring no more than 1.6 million in county appropriations, low interest rates which
will make investments remain flat or decline, fewer contributions than 2002 and less membership
revenues. Yet there was a positive role for auxiliary activities which were intended to produce profit.
The museum image, as explained by the director and Ms. Mercer and based on their marketing
research, reflected two images:
1 non image at all
2 The museum is for specific people.
Therefore, this issue is a serious one, if people cannot find the museum interesting from the first place
how would they want to visit it? The museum offered different educational programs and special
exhibitions, and made lots of effort in promotion especially through press relations and local media.
Even though the attendance increases, yet the attendees would be non MMA members. Nevertheless,
such exposure helped in the annual membership solicitation.
Memberships provide the largest chare of the museum s revenues. As they are divided into two
categories, statistics showed that in 2002, personal memberships accounted almost 80% of
membership revenue. Thus the market of the business consists mainly of personal membership more
than corporate. Yet, the estimated cost of member benefits provided exceeded $ 1 million per year, and

French Absolute Monarchy
In the centuries preceding the French revolution, France was an absolute monarchy renowned for its
power, wealth and efficiency. The French kings maintained this power by establishing the Estates
General, an assembly composed of representatives from the French nobility, church and mercantile
classes. All three classes served a key role, in exchange for a complete tax emption the French nobility
provided professional soldiers to protect France s vulnerable borders while the Catholic Church
administered the legal system and the lower class merchants financed the government with their tax
money. By cooperating with these groups, the French monarchs ensured that their power was never is
jeopardy (Fields, O Neil and Share 155 156). However, by the fifteenth century the French monarchy
had grown increasingly centralized, allowing the king to expand France s borders significantly while
greatly boosting his own popularity and influence. As a result, the French monarchs where able to ...

By the 18th century, France s imperialist conquests and the royal family s expensive luxury
consumption put a significant strain on France s finances. To compensate, taxes on the French lower

Louis XVI, France s monarch at the time, attempted to end this downward spiral by calling the estates
general to order for the first time in generations, believing that the conservative clergy and nobles
would shore up support for his rule. Instead, the lower class merchants demanded that they be given
more power in the Estates General due to them composing the overwhelming majority of France s
population (Fields, O Neil and Share 155 159). The king s refusal of their demands, coupled with
France s ongoing famine and high taxes, enraged the French lower classes leading to the end of the

The Pursuit Of Happiness In Willa Cather s My Antonia
Happiness is many things to different people. People have referred to the pursuit of happiness for
hundreds of years. In the book, My Antonia by Willa Cather, the main character, Jim Burden, quotes
happiness as ...to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes as
naturally as sleep. Antonia Shimerda, the person who impacted Jim s life directly and indirectly for all
of his life would view happiness in a different way. Jim feels the way he does about happiness because
he has led a fairly charmed life. Even though he became an orphan and had to move to Nebraska to be
raised by his grandparents, Jim had many privileges and support from them growing up and he tended
to be able to set his sights on what he wanted and go after it with success. Antonia, in contrast, even
with her wonderful soul, great strength and ability to keep moving forward with a positive attitude,
had to fight hard for every bit of happiness that came her way. Antonia says to Jim, Things will be
easy for you. But they will be hard for us. She and Jim had drifted apart some after her father
committed suicide. She and Jim were sitting together watching an electrical storm on top of the
chicken house and Jim asked her why she had changed. It was clear that Antonia could see that Jim
had a promising future ahead because he was going to school and she was trapped having to take care
of her family and wouldn t be able to go to school. Another major heartbreak came for Antonia

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Spyware
Spyware is a worldwide scourge that has turned out to be progressively across the board and
pernicious. A May 2005 overview by the Ponemon Institute found that 85% of regular web clients
trust that they have had spyware on their PC, and 86% of those clients said that the spyware brought
on them a direct money related or efficiency misfortune. A sweep of 3 million PC frameworks directed
more than nine months by EarthLink in 2004 discovered 83 million cases of spyware. Spyware is
programming that is introduced on a PC without the information or assent of the client, to gather and
transmit information from the PC. Inside of this definition, be that as it may, there are wide ranges of
sorts of spyware. Some spyware is generally amiable. One case is spyware, which gathers data about
how a client uses a product application and reports that data back to the product merchant. On the off

Spyware may get on to a PC in various ways. Spyware merchants here and there use deceiving or
tricky strategies to urge clients to introduce spyware, for example, by showing a fake message
requesting that clients introduce programming to settle a working framework issue. Spyware may be
secretively introduced on a PC associated with the Internet, which is insufficiently secured.
Frequently, spyware is incorporated as a piece of a bigger programming bundle introduced by the
client. The permit understanding gave the product may neglect to show that spyware will be
introduced alongside the principle program. On the other hand, the permit assentation furnished with
the product may show the vicinity of spyware, yet be exhibited in a little textual style or encircled in
purposely ambiguous and specialized language so that most clients will acknowledge the

Negative Essay On Kneeling
The National Football League is an organization governing one of America s four major sports,
football. Therefore, there are going to be controversial issues that come up quite frequently. One
example is the 1925 NFL champion, where it is recorded that the Cardinals won the championship, but
in reality, the Pottsville Maroons won with a score of 21 7. Other examples can range anywhere from
player conduct to coaching controversies. The most recent controversy started when Colin Kaepernick
kneeled during the national anthem to show respect for African Americans who were targeted by
police. In August 2016, Colin Kaepernick drastically transformed kneeling as a sign of respect to a
sign of protest.
Kneeling is a gesture in various situations that is used to show a sign of respect. It is defined as a
position in which the body is supported by a knee or the knees, as when praying or showing
submission. In a letter regarding kneeling, it discusses kneeling as reverence; for instance when
kneeling before one s king or before one s god (Hamant, 2017). Kneeling has been used for many
years to show submission to one of higher authority, especially kings. People use kneeling to
acknowledge someone with a higher power. It is used quite frequently in the Catholic Church when
they are praying or partaking in mass. In an article on why Catholics kneel, sit, and stand, K. Albert
Little tells her story of how she became Catholic. She said that they kneel at mass because, by

Ontological Argument Essay
Most people have not witnessed or experienced God and therefore are confused about its existence. In
Western theology, three theories have emerged to demonstrate the existence of God. These theories are
the ontological argument, the cosmological argument, and the teleological argument. St. Anselm of
eleventh century, and Descartes of seventeenth century, have used the ontological argument for
proving the existence of God. The God, for them, is supreme, quot;needing nothing outside himself,
but needful for the being and well being of all things. quot; (Pg. 305).
St Anselm s account of the ontological argument for the existence of God deals with the existence in
the understanding vs. existence in reality. He defines God as

308). Hence, it is just as much of a contradiction to think of God (that is, a supremely perfect being)
lacking existence (that is, lacking perfection), as it is to think of a mountain without a valley.
His theory is that he can t think of God without it existing and therefore it exists. Also he gives God all
kinds of perfection and because existence is one of the perfection,
quot;God necessarily exists. quot; (Pg. 309).
Kant s critique of Anselm s and Descartes arguments state that existence is not a perfection because all
perfections are qualities, and existence is not any kind of characteristic, quality, attribute, or property.
When we say that something exists, Kant argued, we quot;add nothing to quot; our concept of that
thing we merely say that there is something similar to that concept. It follows that no matter how
many characteristics of a thing we list; we will still not have answered the question whether there is
something having all those characteristics. quot;Being is evidently not a real predicate, or a concept of
something that can be added to the concept of a thing. It is merely the admission of a thing, and of
certain determinations in it. quot; (Pg. 311). His argument is that it is all right to say that God has
certain characteristics but it is another to say that such a God exists. Many contemporary philosophers
agree with Kant s argument, but many others do not. Furthermore, contemporary logicians have
developed

The Name Says It All. Many Names Have Meanings Connected
The Name Says It All Many names have meanings connected to them, like the name Erika having the
meaning ruler. In Amara Lakhous s novel Divorce Islamic Style, there is a strong focus on the
importance of names, which are used as the first and foremost way to describe a character. These
characters, such as Christian, Sofia, and various minor characters, are described and developed
according to the names they have been given. One of the first characters we are introduced to is
Christian (alias Issa). Both Christian s birth name and spy name have meanings that represent his
character. His birth name Christian has the literal meaning of a Christian (Behind the Name). His spy
name, Issa, is the Arabic form of Jesus (Lakhous 34). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Christian listens to Saber s passions of soccer and Simona Barberini and learns about his
dreams (Lakhous 71). Christian even listens to the story of an upset student who could not get room at
the building (Lakhous 66 67). Christian lives up to both his birth name and his spy name, by
exhibiting the characteristics of Jesus (Issa) and ultimately the ideals a Christian is to uphold.
Christian s names are a major descriptor of his characteristics, as well as having some irony to them as
well.
Another character whose two names help describe herself is Sofia, or Safia. Sofia s birth name, Safia,
relatively means pure (Behind the Name). Her European name, Sofia, means wisdom (Behind the
Name). Both names describe the character Sofia, although her European name is perhaps the easiest to
see and most commonly used of the two. Sofia shows her wisdom throughout the novel. The most
often time when this is shown is when she discusses the beliefs and teachings of Islam, such as her
understanding and explanation of maktùb, where she shows a great amount of thoughtfulness in how
destiny cannot be subverted but can be changed by God (Lakhous 31 32). She understands that while
she cannot change destiny, and it will happen no matter what, it can turn out unexpectedly due to the
hand of a higher power. She also shows wisdom when understanding the battles of marriage, such as
when she argued with her husband about wearing the

What Was The Impact Of Nationalism In Germany Between 1815...
Nationalism was a result of a myriad of contributing factors which had a plethora of significant
impacts on Germany during the years 1815 and 1871. Nationalism is an ideology based on the sense
of loyalty and devotion one has to their nation and the beliefs that those who share a common
language, history, and culture should constitute an independent nation free of foreign domination. The
first, and perhaps most significant, effect that nationalism had upon Germany was that it led to
German unification in 1871. Another impact that nationalism had in Germany was that it allowed
Germans to develop a sense of national identity. Nationalism also played a huge role in enabling
Germany to become a dominant power within Europe. Therefore, nationalism ... Show more content

Many attempts to unify the separate German speaking countries were made prior to its official
unification, however, they were all ultimately unsuccessful. This was due to the fact that although the
people were Germanic, they had little sense of a national identity. Nationalism was a driving force
behind the development of a national consciousness as it assisted people in realising that they were all
German and, as a result, were all similar in many ways. These commonalities encouraged the
emergence of a distinct German identity. The biggest cultural factor was undoubtedly the German
language. Although there were different dialects used among the states, these variations emerged from
the same source, hence, the German people had shared a common language. All the states also shared
customs and a common culture, which stemmed from similar tastes in literature and music. There was
an increase in German literature, from the works of Goethe and Schiller, that recognised common
German characteristics and an interest in folklore also emerged at the time, as a result of the works of
The Brothers Grimm, who presented these tales as German in origin and changed details that
suggested different origins. What became the German national anthem was a poem that read
Deutschland über alles / Über alles in der Welt , which translates to Germany above all else / Above
all else in the world . The task of creating the German nation state was one that required and generated
a significant amount of hope in the citizens of Germany, who were able to transcend territories,
borders and different cultural

A Struggle For Acceptance In Raymond s Run
People often try to be who they are not, they try to be what others want them to be. $$$ This causes
insecurity and a desperation for acceptance from others. People try to have a second face to everyone
else, trying to receive acceptance, but completely ignoring the consequences: the pain, lack of
freedom, and guilt of lying to others who you appreciate, and yourself, as well. However, some people
realize it is ok to be different, to be unique. After all, everyone is different. These people learn to
accept that they are different, and cease the torment of letting others pick out their flaws, and pressure
them to be perfect, to be the gender stereotypical person everyone should be. The imperfections of

Seven Spotted Lady Beetle Research Paper
The class Insecta is comprised of six legged organisms which are divided into three sections, the head,

Taking a Look at Cyberstalking
Stalking is getting more of a concern as internet becomes increasing popular. Cyber stalking is the
easy form that takes place on the internet and social media like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Stalking is a criminal offense and is not to be taken lightly. Stalking is a way to harass a person in
order to gain control of their lives. Social media like Facebook makes information about the person s
life too easy to get their hands on. Some people post on Facebook their every move and their life story
but that information is can be leaked and get into the hands of ordinary people that we don t even
know.
Therefore, Stalking is a creepy thought, but it can really affect your life if people try to use your
information like the movie Identity Theft. According to research, the internet era has made stalking
easier for the stalker (Cyberstalking, personal privacy, and moral responsibility). They can look up
people just by sitting at home any day they feel like it. Before all this technology, they couldn t just
find a person randomly on a Facebook page like they can now. I own a Facebook so this privacy
concern does worry me. I don t like to post all my whereabouts because you just can t trust some
people out there.
Stalking incidents have risen in the last couple of years. In Maine, stalking incidents among children
rose to 237 percent last year (Cyber Stalking of Kids Jumps 237% in Maine). I believe the internet
also conflicts with the moral aspects of stalking. Stalkers do

Historical Reliability Of The Story Of Jesus
We often approach the Gospels with tightly held presuppositions. Many people, myself included,
believe that the Gospels are a reliable historical resource. The Story of Jesus documentary both
undergirds and challenges these presuppositions. The historicity of the Gospels is a thread which
underlies the entirety of the Christian faith. The reliability of the Gospels is integral to the life and

An Analysis Of The Circuit By Francisco Jimenez
Challenges and obstacles are everywhere, and everyday people find ways to overcome them all. They
are what keep someone motivated to continue trying until they reached their goal. As in The Circuit,
from the Grapes of Wrath, and Against the Odds. , they show an example of how they did it.
Individuals surpass hardships by persevering to make progress piece by piece. In the short story The
Circuit by Francisco Jimenez, Panchito dealt with being a migrant worker and going to school. At
school, he struggled to read his English book. According to page 473, it states, He walked up to me,
handed me an English book, and asked me to read... When I heard this, I felt my blood rush to my

Quality In Healthcare
Individual Assignment #1
The most important measure of success in any kind of organization is quality. Quality is extremely
crucial in all organizations whether it is within healthcare or not because, it is a symbol that is
representing the main image of an organization. A quality of an organization is based on the facts that
they are always remarkably meeting the expectations of their customers, if not even doing more. It
also means that such organization is always striving to find the unsatisfied areas of the customers in
which to improve. When every organization ensures that it is producing quality products or services,
this not only embellishes the overall look of the company, but it attracts others to get involved with

The fourth aim timely is also very important, an outstanding quality facility should not have customers
waiting too long before being provided care, not only will that contribute to losing customers but it
could result severely in worse cases such as deaths. Lastly, health care organization should be
efficient, which means they should seek to remove waste from the facilities as soon as possible and
the cost of services should be capable to afford. And the sixth tells us that health care should be
equitable, this means to be known for a great quality in a health care organization, it must accept all
kinds of people, it must not discriminate but strive to give the same high quality care to everyone who

Essay about Major Depression Disorder
Major Depression Disorder Evidence shows that Major Depression Disorder has been around four
thousands of years. In the fourth century BC, Hippocrates referred to a group of symptoms including
loss of appetite, insomnia, flat affect, and irritability as melancholia (Jackson). Taking accountability
of melancholia appeared in ancient Mesopotamian texts in the second millennium B.C. At this time,
any mental illness had something to do with the demons. It had to be checked by the priests. The first
time that there was an understanding of depression it was truly considered more of a spiritual illness
caused by demons rather than a physical illness. Ancient Greeks and Romans put taught about the
causes of melancholia. For example in the 5th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Depression has become a global issue. In accordance to Medscape Log in MDD is the second leading
cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the burden of suicide (Brooks). It ranks lower
in low income countries but higher in the medium and high income countries. Depression itself has
become ranked higher above other diseases.
In the Christian Bible, King David penned psalm after psalm filled with sadness and despair. Psalm 6:
3: reads, My soul is in deep anguish , and Psalm 6:6 7: All night long I flood my bed with weeping
and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow . Anyone can have depression from
authors to movie stars, from professors to students. To actually have considered having depression one
has to have a complete understanding of depression. Having MDD, comes with having at least five of
the symptoms every day during the period of 2 weeks. Most importantly it must show a change in the
individual. Over that the symptoms have to cause distress in work, social, or other areas. If the person
has another mental disorder, or medical condition the symptoms should not be due to them. One
symptom that stands out is a depressed mood. The person will feel sad, disappointed, and careless.
Many will complain in the stage that they are in. Some can t describe the feeling that they have. They
start denying that they are depressed so it is really important that you keep a

Mandatory Trigger Warnings
At University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2014, the student Senate passed a resolution that called
for mandatory trigger warnings. This resolution, if it had become campus policy, proposed that not
only students who have been diagnosed with PTSD would be exempt from class for any possibly
triggering material but any student who was discomfited by the material (The Times Editorial Board).
In other words, students have the choice to decide if they attend lecture due to discomfort scot free.
According to the UCSB Newspaper, The Nexus, sophomore Bailey Loverin said the idea for campus
wide trigger warnings came to her in February after a professor showed a graphic film depicting rape.
Although she had herself not felt triggered by the film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to NPR author Anya Kamenetz, 51% out of 841 professors reported that they ve used a
trigger warning in advance of introducing potentially difficult material (Kamenetz). University faculty
and staff have increasingly used trigger warnings to alert students to the possibility that they might be
affected or even harmed by potentially traumatic material. In colleges like Oberlin and UCSB, trigger
warnings are given in assumption that universities have a responsibility to protect students from
controversial or potentially sensitive material. Joanna Williams, director of the Centre for the Study of
Higher Education at the University of Kent, points out that the entire canon of English literature could
contain warnings as to the emotional nature of the content and the issues covered (Williams 17). This
has already begun to happen as some students have called for warnings for classic works like Chinua
Achebe s Things Fall Apart due its description of racial violence, so that those students who have been
previously victimized by racism or domestic violence can choose to avoid these works, due to the
possibility of a trigger. Williams also mentions that lecturers driven by the pursuit of student
satisfaction may well choose to self censor and leave controversial topics out of the curriculum
altogether to prevent potential upset (Williams 187). One professor, in a Vox op ed called I m a liberal
professor, and my liberal students terrify me, validates this idea by writing that he was afraid of his
undergraduate students after a complaint and edited his subject material to avoid upsetting them. He
further acknowledges that his colleagues have done the same for fear of being let go (Schlosser). The
claims for a right to not be offended has essentially created a challenge for universities and their
professors to teach students to be comfortable with challenging

Natural Resource Of Natural Resources
While natural resources have played an important role in creating wealth and powering development,
recent research shows an inverse correlation between the abundance of natural resources and growth
and development. This has been true of many of the economies in Latin America, Africa and the Arab
world, regions characterized by high levels of natural resources endowments, be they minerals, oil or
timber. The inverse correlation between endowment and wealth creation dubbed as the natural
resource curse hypothesis has been the subject of intense study and has yielded valuable insights into
political economy issues.

This understanding is noticeably sparse. To be fair, developing a good understanding of stakeholder
motivations is extremely challenging because of the complex nature of the sector, which itself arises
from special sector characteristics. What are these? These range from the biophysical, to the social, to
economic, to the state. On the biophysical side, forest resources contribute multiple benefits and
services; yet the resource (even though it is technically renewable) renews only quite slowly and many
services can be irreversibly lost if the resource stock falls below a critical minimum. On the social
front, this is a sector which is characterized by unclear ownership and access rights and conflicts
between traditional and modern legal rights. The resource generates multiple benefits for multiple
users and often these are in conflict. Unlike other resources, forests provide a wide range of public
benefits ( watershed protection, carbon sequestration, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem
resilience) only when they are preserved; and they provide private benefits (timber rents) principally
when they are harvested. So there is a well recognized need for high levels of intervention to ensure
optimal and sustainable levels of harvesting as well as adequate protection of the public benefits. In
addition, both,

The Mother Daughter Relationship and Self-Image Essay
Living in a world characterized by its fixation with appearance, it is no wonder that children,
especially girls, are learning to distrust and abuse their bodies. Susan Williams defines the structure of
female gender with the idea of a gender regime or the concept that gender is fluid and specific to time
and place (Williams 31). As one such environment, family life contains strong parental influences
capable of drastically altering the gendered spaces and therefore gender perception of children.
Specifically, the connection between mother and daughter body types and eating habits, examined
both racially and cross culturally, show that women can inadvertently inherit body dissatisfaction and
negative attitudes towards food a trend that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many times girls change their natural eating patterns simply to appropriate a measure of control from
their mothers. Conversely, healthy maternal involvement and intimacy while maintaining and
encouraging a separate identity decreases the weight concerns of children (May 10). Although a lack
of power and desire for control may stimulate eating disturbances in young girls, it is the attitudes
around her which more frequently determine a girl s own attitude towards food. Across race and
culture, the manner in which maternal figures approach consumption and the beliefs they hold about
their own figures are the most probable predictors of their daughters level of weight concern. With the
ever extending hand of American mass media now reaching practically every corner of the globe, the
pressure mothers feel to be thinner and their inevitable dissatisfaction with their bodies does not bode
well for the attitude of their daughters. Whether intentionally or not, mothers inadvertently tell their
daughters that the body is an enemy to be controlled rather than a source of pleasure to be enjoyed
(Beattie 3). Although women may desire to feed and nurture as a part of their traditional role as a
mother, the closer they associate with white middle class values the more important thinness becomes
for both themselves and their children.
Conversely, there has been research which places the risk of skewed body

Once negotiated with management, this estimate becomes your budget. As the project evolves,
additional information is discovered and further estimates are produced. This is an extremely
important process and we cannot emphasize enough the need for this re‐estimation or re‐budgeting
process at each phase of the project. In any case, for the purpose of this article, we will call the revised
budget the actual budget. Another standard activity is to provide management with an expected cash
flow. From a financial perspective this is an important activity, but it also can be used as your cost
expectation.
As the project progresses, you monitor the actual spending which becomes your actual cost. This cost
divided by your actual budget is the % spent, which can be compared to the expectation to provide an
excellent guide to where you stand cost‐wise. However, with respect to progress, cost comparison
alone is limited. A trend of the cost spending is a useful tool. Actual cost monitoring has several
constraints. The major limitation is the availability of the data in real time. Indeed, most project
accounting systems have major delays, usually due to the billing/payment system. It might take more
than a month before an invoice gets into the accounting system. The best way to resolve this problem
is to use a parallel real‐time approximated accounting system.
Invoices are accounted for as spent as soon as the work has been performed. Another inadequacy with

Analysis Of The 25 Minute Magic Bullet
The 25 minute Magic Bullet infomercial is full of persuasion in many aspects. Throughout my paper I

downplay strategies that I observed from watching the Magic Bullet Commercial. The strategies and
tactics that the persuaders used worked well, by the end of the commercial I wanted the product they
advertised. Throughout my paper I will go more in depth to Rank s Model of persuasion by analyzing,
explaining, and providing examples from the Magic Bullet infomercial. There are two main strategies
of Rank s model, intensify and downplay.
Rank s intensify model strategy is where the persuader intensifies the positive aspects of their
campaign or they focus on the negative aspects of a competitor s product or campaign. Included in the
intensify portion of Rank s model there are 3 tactics, repetition, association, and composition. These
are 3 simple tactics that are used frequently in persuasive material. Repetition includes recurring
themes, such as jingles and slogans. Association is where the persuasive material links positive or
negative ideas to the advice they are giving to consumers. Composition is the graphic, layout, and
design of the persuasive material. In the Magic bullet commercial all three of these aspects of the
intensify model were present. (Larson, 2013) Throughout the Magic Bullet commercial the Magic
Bullet logo appears on the screen frequently. This is the

Supreme Court Case Terry v. Ohio
In the case Terry v. Ohio, the defendant John Terry argued that his Fourth Amendment right was
violated when a police officer conducted a search on him, and found a concealed weapon. According
to the officer, he had been monitoring Terry s actions prior to the stop in fear of his safety, thus, had
enough reasonable suspicion to stop and search the defendant. The Supreme Court decided to rule in
favor of the state determining that the officer may stop and frisk any suspicious person when he feels
that his safety or those of others are in danger. A Terry Stop is when the police are allowed to stop,
question and frisk someone they believe is behaving suspiciously (Larson, 2000). I am going to argue
how police officers benefit from the Terry Stops even though on many occasions they take advantage
of their power and act unethical. Essentially, it is acceptable for police officers to stop and frisk any
suspicious person because it enhances the community. Furthermore, from the law enforcement
perspective, any officer of the law should have a mandatory right to stop and search for weapons in
order to protect themselves at all times. It is obvious that society feels that they cannot trust law
enforcement because minorities are more likely to be stopped and frisk. Needless to say, it can be
argued that we are one step closer to chaos. I would consider that the Supreme Court clarify and
specify a little more on the stop and frisk law because ambiguity. In my opinion, anytime an

Optimism
Optimism is a mental attitude or world view that interprets situations and events as being best
(optimized), meaning that in some way for factors that may not be fully comprehended, the present
moment is in an optimum state. The concept is typically extended to include the attitude of hope for
future conditions unfolding as optimal as well. The more broad concept of optimism is the
understanding that all of nature, past, present and future, operates by laws of optimization along the
lines of Hamilton s principle of optimization in the realm of physics. This understanding, although

Panglossianism
The term panglossianism describes baseless optimism of the sort exemplified by the beliefs of

The panglossian paradigm is a term coined by Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin to refer to the

Achieving Millennium Development Goal 2
With the goal of achieving Millennium Development Goal 2(MDG TL, 2014), Timor Leste is
currently working to enhance the quality of education, particularly in the Ensino Basico (Basic
Education) (NESP Tl, 2011). Responding to these challenges, the Ministry of Education provides
professional training referred to as curso intensivo in order to facilitate pedagogical change in teachers
(Shah, 2013). This professional training embraces the concept of the community of practice because
teachers are principally engaged in joint activities to support each other, and to share information on
the subject of knowledge in order to enhance the quality of teaching. Educational Policy in Timor
Leste, The National Educational Strategic Plan 2011 2030, emphasizes that a holistic approach such as
communities of practice, is the best way to facilitate pedagogical renewal in Timor Leste educational
system (NESP TL, 2011). Wenger, McDermott, and Snyder (2006) acknowledge the benefit of
communities of practice by explaining that each group member s concerns and issues on the practical
subject can be mutually addressed through regular interaction.
Accordingly, this chapter will be divided into several sections; firstly, definition of terms. This section
will discuss about originality, definition, characteristics, principles of practice and understanding the
communities of practice. Secondly, a brief introduction of the communities of practice in the pre
independence phase. This section, the

Slavery Impact On Roman Economy
The impact of Slavery on the Roman Economy
I will split the economic impact of slave labor into the three major sectors often used by modern
economists (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.).
1. Primary economies involve raw materials produced by farming, mining, logging, etc.
2. Secondary economy involves manufacturing of goods such as pottery, tools, and sundry goods.
3. Tertiary economy involves trade, and sales of goods.
Less indirect impacts such as the centralization of wealth, and the suppression of offshoot economies,
and the economic impacts on subgroups will also be discussed.

mining could be produced at significantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When most of the workers are slaves with little disposable income, there is little net benefit to the
local economy. An additional factor is that newer and smaller companies usually employ more people
(National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.). Unfortunately, with the centralization of wealth and
power small farms and businesses were often suppressed or gobbled up by the wealthy. Summary
The slave economy helped increase the inflow of wealth to Rome filling it s coffers and benefiting the
wealthy nobility which grew up to take advantage of it. It was the strength of this economy, which
helped Rome achieve Greatness. This however, came at a cost since that wealth was unevenly
distributed and used to suppress competition from the less wealthy. In addition, a significant portion of
the population was pushed into poverty resulting in a welfare state. Thus resulting in a drain on the
public coffers and the loss of productivity these people would normally have provided.
I leave this discussion with a final thought. Rome was full of creative thinkers, architects, and
engineers. If Rome had managed to wean itself off of cheap slave labor, would solutions to rising
labor costs goaded them into the creation of an industrial revolution, 1500 years in advanced to our

The Evil Empire that is what, at the height of the arms race, United States President Ronald Reagan

to deter the other from nuclear launch with threat of counter attack (O Neal 1). This massive arms
buildup, however, had many negative effects on the US. To recognize the impact that the arms race
continues to have on today, it is crucial to understand not only its causes, but also its immediate
impacts on the US economy, society, foreign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This preparation took the form of an arms race. The arms race was a competitive acquisition of
weapons by the Soviet Union and the United States. (Boilard 1). The strategy behind the arms race
was to amass more nuclear weapons than the opponent, thus enabling them to win any future nuclear
war. It was assumed that if nuclear war happened, then the country with the most nuclear weapons
would destroy more of the other country, consequently winning the war (Boilard 1). Under this
strategy, the Soviet Union built about 45,000 nuclear warheads, and obtained enough radioactive
materials to triple that. The Soviet Union also placed tactical missile sites in many countries from
Cuba to Kazakhstan, hoping to be able to perform a fast strike from close range if necessary (O Neal
1). Likewise, the US placed missiles in Europe and started the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI)
program. The SDI program was meant to defend against a nuclear attack. The SDI program included
satellites with lasers and nuclear powered railguns, which would ideally be able to shoot down
approaching missiles long before they reached their target. The SDI program was also referred to as
Star Wars because its use of lasers in space made it seem like science fiction. Furthermore, the price,
amount of electricity needed to power these weapons, and amount of research needed was so great that

Radical Feminism in Like Water for Chocolate Essay
There are many different definitions of feminism. Some people regard feminism as the idea that
women deserve the same amount of respect that men deserve. There are the other schools of feminist
thought that hold women superior to men. Yet another believes that the gender roles controlling
women are artificially created and not innate knowledge, and thus men and women are equals with
only history the determining factor and how gender equality is established. There are clear feminist
overtones in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Esquivel pointes to a more radical
definition of feminism in Like Water for Chocolate. The story focuses on mostly female characters
that assume the gender roles typically associated with men. Esquivel ... Show more content on

We see elsewhere in the novel the strength in Gertrudis, Tita s sister. Gertrudis escapes the ranch after
reacting mysteriously to one of Tita s recipes. She runs away with a rebel soldier, works in a brothel at
the Mexico Texas border, and eventually returns to the ranch as a general in the revolutionary army.
Here we witness the creation of a second strong female character. When we first see Gertrudis we see
just another female character. But after her return we find that she has become a leader of in the
revolution. Again Esquivel takes a potion that is typically male associated and fills that role with and
equally respectable female character.
There is then the focal character, Tita. Tita is the pivotal character in defining Like Water for
Chocolate as a feminist novel. Tita more than her mother, is the glue that holds her family together. It
is she that cares for the ranch and feeds everyone. Tita is the one who ensures that everything goes to
plan. After her mother becomes paralyzed, even with her hatred towards her she still continues to care
for her. Tita is the strongest feminine figure in this novel. She continues to strive for what she wants
form life and stops at nothing to get it. Through Esquivel creates a sense that Tita is not someone who
you would want to get in the way of. Esquivel does this in such a way

Combating terrorism means to take action on the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, usually occurring against civilians. Government shouldn t be limited in combating terrorism due to the historical impact, past government ruling, and effects on terrorism current day. Throughout historical evidence government shouldn t be limited to combat terrorism. For instance, according to amendment 14 no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without the due process, (Amendments, 1998. Pg.40). Bureaucracy does not affect Akaky because he is used to constant oppression. Daniels initially is oppressed by his surroundings until he learns to interact with them beneficially. Daniels, unlike Akaky, mentally transcends all forms of oppression by believing that he is a God. Daniel s transcendence from social restrictions allows him to live ignorantly in his oppressive world. Akaky and Daniels both interact with oppressive environments; however, they only experience subjugation from their environments when they are aware of the oppression. Ignorance of their circumstances allows the two to avoid experiencing the oppression unless there is a change in their status quo. At first glance, Akaky appears to be stuck in the bureaucratic system as a mere slave. The system supposedly oppresses him causing him to be compliant and introverted. He appears to be oppressed by the system causing him to be compliant and introverted. However, Akaky enjoys his position as a lowly clerk, and actually prefers to maintain his status rather than climb the ranks in his office to reduce the assumed oppression of the bureaucratic system. Thus, the individual has some control over whether or not they are oppressed by their environment or government. Akaky only experiences the oppression from the complex Russian bureaucracy when he loses his coat. He finds the need to interact with the different levels of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yet it is evident that this rhetoric is detrimental to the understanding that children are highly susceptible to influences from film and lack necessary skills to think critically. Thus, animated films instill ideologies within children that follow them throughout their lives. The predominant white narrative within the Disney film Pocahontas misrepresents Indigenous culture by portraying them as savage, bestial, and primitive caricatures while the falsification of historical events sets to maintain the archetypical white Anglo Saxon supremacy, creating hegemonic ideologies that decisively impact how Indigenous people are viewed negatively within society and internally feel Otherized, causing confusion of personal identity. I will begin by articulating how films provoke fantasy, fears, and social concerns to garner audiences for profitability. These provocations are rooted in the ideologies of the dominant culture at the expense of Indigenous peoples. I will then express how the Self (white men) and the Other (Indigenous people) are segmented within Pocahontas and the effects this has on the relationship of Indigenous people to society. Next, I will discuss how the false representation of historical events creates cultural hegemony and reinforces categorization of Indigenous people. Lastly, I will demonstrate that the negative and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, there are going to be controversial issues that come up quite frequently. One example is the 1925 NFL champion, where it is recorded that the Cardinals won the championship, but in reality, the Pottsville Maroons won with a score of 21 7. Other examples can range anywhere from player conduct to coaching controversies. The most recent controversy started when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem to show respect for African Americans who were targeted by police. In August 2016, Colin Kaepernick drastically transformed kneeling as a sign of respect to a sign of protest. Kneeling is a gesture in various situations that is used to show a sign of respect. • 10. Ontological Argument Essay Most people have not witnessed or experienced God and therefore are confused about its existence. In Western theology, three theories have emerged to demonstrate the existence of God. These theories are the ontological argument, the cosmological argument, and the teleological argument. St. Anselm of eleventh century, and Descartes of seventeenth century, have used the ontological argument for proving the existence of God. The God, for them, is supreme, quot;needing nothing outside himself, but needful for the being and well being of all things. quot; (Pg. 305). Also he gives God all kinds of perfection and because existence is one of the perfection, quot;God necessarily exists. quot; (Pg. 309). Kant s critique of Anselm s and Descartes arguments state that existence is not a perfection because all perfections are qualities, and existence is not any kind of characteristic, quality, attribute, or property. When we say that something exists, Kant argued, we quot;add nothing to quot; our concept of that thing we merely say that there is something similar to that concept. It follows that no matter how many characteristics of a thing we list; we will still not have answered the question whether there is something having all those characteristics. quot;Being is evidently not a real predicate, or a concept of something that can be added to the concept of a thing. It is merely the admission of a thing, and of certain determinations in it. quot; (Pg. 311). These characters, such as Christian, Sofia, and various minor characters, are described and developed according to the names they have been given. One of the first characters we are introduced to is Christian (alias Issa). Both Christian s birth name and spy name have meanings that represent his character. • 12. What Was The Impact Of Nationalism In Germany Between 1815... Nationalism was a result of a myriad of contributing factors which had a plethora of significant impacts on Germany during the years 1815 and 1871. Nationalism is an ideology based on the sense of loyalty and devotion one has to their nation and the beliefs that those who share a common language, history, and culture should constitute an independent nation free of foreign domination. The first, and perhaps most significant, effect that nationalism had upon Germany was that it led to German unification in 1871. Another impact that nationalism had in Germany was that it allowed Germans to develop a sense of national identity. Many attempts to unify the separate German speaking countries were made prior to its official unification, however, they were all ultimately unsuccessful. This was due to the fact that although the people were Germanic, they had little sense of a national identity. Nationalism was a driving force behind the development of a national consciousness as it assisted people in realising that they were all German and, as a result, were all similar in many ways. These commonalities encouraged the emergence of a distinct German identity. The biggest cultural factor was undoubtedly the German language. Although there were different dialects used among the states, these variations emerged from the same source, hence, the German people had shared a common language. All the states also shared customs and a common culture, which stemmed from similar tastes in literature and music. There was an increase in German literature, from the works of Goethe and Schiller, that recognised common German characteristics and an interest in folklore also emerged at the time, as a result of the works of The Brothers Grimm, who presented these tales as German in origin and changed details that suggested different origins. What became the German national anthem was a poem that read Deutschland über alles / Über alles in der Welt , which translates to Germany above all else / Above all else in the world . This resolution, if it had become campus policy, proposed that not only students who have been diagnosed with PTSD would be exempt from class for any possibly triggering material but any student who was discomfited by the material (The Times Editorial Board). In other words, students have the choice to decide if they attend lecture due to discomfort scot free. According to the UCSB Newspaper, The Nexus, sophomore Bailey Loverin said the idea for campus wide trigger warnings came to her in February after a professor showed a graphic film depicting rape. Although she had herself not felt triggered by the film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to NPR author Anya Kamenetz, 51% out of 841 professors reported that they ve used a trigger warning in advance of introducing potentially difficult material (Kamenetz). University faculty and staff have increasingly used trigger warnings to alert students to the possibility that they might be affected or even harmed by potentially traumatic material. In colleges like Oberlin and UCSB, trigger warnings are given in assumption that universities have a responsibility to protect students from controversial or potentially sensitive material. Joanna Williams, director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, points out that the entire canon of English literature could contain warnings as to the emotional nature of the content and the issues covered (Williams 17). This has already begun to happen as some students have called for warnings for classic works like Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart due its description of racial violence, so that those students who have been previously victimized by racism or domestic violence can choose to avoid these works, due to the possibility of a trigger. Williams also mentions that lecturers driven by the pursuit of student satisfaction may well choose to self censor and leave controversial topics out of the curriculum altogether to prevent potential upset (Williams 187). One professor, in a Vox op ed called I m a liberal professor, and my liberal students terrify me, validates this idea by writing that he was afraid of his undergraduate students after a complaint and edited his subject material to avoid upsetting them. He further acknowledges that his colleagues have done the same for fear of being let go (Schlosser). The claims for a right to not be offended has essentially created a challenge for universities and their professors to teach students to be comfortable with challenging ... Natural Resource Of Natural Resources While natural resources have played an important role in creating wealth and powering development, recent research shows an inverse correlation between the abundance of natural resources and growth and development. This has been true of many of the economies in Latin America, Africa and the Arab world, regions characterized by high levels of natural resources endowments, be they minerals, oil or timber. The inverse correlation between endowment and wealth creation dubbed as the natural resource curse hypothesis has been the subject of intense study and has yielded valuable insights into political economy issues. This understanding is noticeably sparse. To be fair, developing a good understanding of stakeholder motivations is extremely challenging because of the complex nature of the sector, which itself arises from special sector characteristics. What are these? These range from the biophysical, to the social, to economic, to the state. On the biophysical side, forest resources contribute multiple benefits and services; yet the resource (even though it is technically renewable) renews only quite slowly and many services can be irreversibly lost if the resource stock falls below a critical minimum. On the social front, this is a sector which is characterized by unclear ownership and access rights and conflicts between traditional and modern legal rights. The resource generates multiple benefits for multiple users and often these are in conflict. Unlike other resources, forests provide a wide range of public benefits ( watershed protection, carbon sequestration, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem resilience) only when they are preserved; and they provide private benefits (timber rents) principally when they are harvested. So there is a well recognized need for high levels of intervention to ensure optimal and sustainable levels of harvesting as well as adequate protection of the public benefits. In addition, both, ... • 26. The Mother Daughter Relationship and Self-Image Essay Living in a world characterized by its fixation with appearance, it is no wonder that children, especially girls, are learning to distrust and abuse their bodies. Susan Williams defines the structure of female gender with the idea of a gender regime or the concept that gender is fluid and specific to time and place (Williams 31). As one such environment, family life contains strong parental influences capable of drastically altering the gendered spaces and therefore gender perception of children. Specifically, the connection between mother and daughter body types and eating habits, examined both racially and cross culturally, show that women can inadvertently inherit body dissatisfaction and negative attitudes towards food a trend that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many times girls change their natural eating patterns simply to appropriate a measure of control from their mothers. Conversely, healthy maternal involvement and intimacy while maintaining and encouraging a separate identity decreases the weight concerns of children (May 10). Although a lack of power and desire for control may stimulate eating disturbances in young girls, it is the attitudes around her which more frequently determine a girl s own attitude towards food. Across race and culture, the manner in which maternal figures approach consumption and the beliefs they hold about their own figures are the most probable predictors of their daughters level of weight concern. With the ever extending hand of American mass media now reaching practically every corner of the globe, the pressure mothers feel to be thinner and their inevitable dissatisfaction with their bodies does not bode well for the attitude of their daughters. Whether intentionally or not, mothers inadvertently tell their daughters that the body is an enemy to be controlled rather than a source of pleasure to be enjoyed (Beattie 3). Although women may desire to feed and nurture as a part of their traditional role as a mother, the closer they associate with white middle class values the more important thinness becomes for both themselves and their children. In any case, for the purpose of this article, we will call the revised budget the actual budget. Another standard activity is to provide management with an expected cash flow. From a financial perspective this is an important activity, but it also can be used as your cost expectation. As the project progresses, you monitor the actual spending which becomes your actual cost. This cost divided by your actual budget is the % spent, which can be compared to the expectation to provide an excellent guide to where you stand cost‐wise. However, with respect to progress, cost comparison alone is limited. A trend of the cost spending is a useful tool. Actual cost monitoring has several constraints. The major limitation is the availability of the data in real time. Indeed, most project accounting systems have major delays, usually due to the billing/payment system. The strategies and tactics that the persuaders used worked well, by the end of the commercial I wanted the product they advertised. Throughout my paper I will go more in depth to Rank s Model of persuasion by analyzing, explaining, and providing examples from the Magic Bullet infomercial. There are two main strategies of Rank s model, intensify and downplay. Rank s intensify model strategy is where the persuader intensifies the positive aspects of their campaign or they focus on the negative aspects of a competitor s product or campaign. Included in the intensify portion of Rank s model there are 3 tactics, repetition, association, and composition. These are 3 simple tactics that are used frequently in persuasive material. Repetition includes recurring themes, such as jingles and slogans. Association is where the persuasive material links positive or negative ideas to the advice they are giving to consumers. Composition is the graphic, layout, and design of the persuasive material. In the Magic bullet commercial all three of these aspects of the intensify model were present. Ohio, the defendant John Terry argued that his Fourth Amendment right was violated when a police officer conducted a search on him, and found a concealed weapon. According to the officer, he had been monitoring Terry s actions prior to the stop in fear of his safety, thus, had enough reasonable suspicion to stop and search the defendant. The Supreme Court decided to rule in favor of the state determining that the officer may stop and frisk any suspicious person when he feels that his safety or those of others are in danger. A Terry Stop is when the police are allowed to stop, question and frisk someone they believe is behaving suspiciously (Larson, 2000). I am going to argue how police officers benefit from the Terry Stops even though on many occasions they take advantage of their power and act unethical. Essentially, it is acceptable for police officers to stop and frisk any suspicious person because it enhances the community. Furthermore, from the law enforcement perspective, any officer of the law should have a mandatory right to stop and search for weapons in order to protect themselves at all times. It is obvious that society feels that they cannot trust law enforcement because minorities are more likely to be stopped and frisk. Needless to say, it can be argued that we are one step closer to chaos. I would consider that the Supreme Court clarify and specify a little more on the stop and frisk law because ambiguity. An additional factor is that newer and smaller companies usually employ more people (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.). Summary The slave economy helped increase the inflow of wealth to Rome filling it s coffers and benefiting the wealthy nobility which grew up to take advantage of it. It was the strength of this economy, which helped Rome achieve Greatness. This however, came at a cost since that wealth was unevenly distributed and used to suppress competition from the less wealthy. The strategy behind the arms race was to amass more nuclear weapons than the opponent, thus enabling them to win any future nuclear war. It was assumed that if nuclear war happened, then the country with the most nuclear weapons would destroy more of the other country, consequently winning the war (Boilard 1). Under this strategy, the Soviet Union built about 45,000 nuclear warheads, and obtained enough radioactive materials to triple that. The Soviet Union also placed tactical missile sites in many countries from Cuba to Kazakhstan, hoping to be able to perform a fast strike from close range if necessary (O Neal 1). Likewise, the US placed missiles in Europe and started the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program. The SDI program was meant to defend against a nuclear attack. The SDI program included satellites with lasers and nuclear powered railguns, which would ideally be able to shoot down approaching missiles long before they reached their target. The SDI program was also referred to as Star Wars because its use of lasers in space made it seem like science fiction.
