The American Netflix series House of Cards is a political drama that follows Frank Underwood

Representatives to Vice President and later President of the United States by achieving his political
power through manipulation and ruthless pragmatism with the aid of his wife Claire Underwood
(Robin Wright).
Along with its fictional and hyperbolic representation of Washington DC and its controversial political
visions, House of Cards takes on various current real life debates of American politics in a satirical
and often cynical way.
1.1 The research problem
This case study will examine American politics portrayed in the Netflix series House of Cards to find
out how the depicted political themes and the use of satire relate to the current political environment in
the United States in order to find similarities to real world politics and determine what is fact and what

that led to the failure of Lehman Brothers. There were numerous causes and agents that led to the
disaster, including greedy Wall Street traders, the debt load of American households, the Fed s action,

Greek literature has been known to utilize dramatic irony, which allows the character s motives clear
to the audience although unknown to the main character itself. Sophocles introduces the Greek tragedy
Oedipus the King using this literary technique moving on to develop the concept of blindness and
sight. In fact, this text deals with the idea of blindness and sight revealed by a character both literally
and figuratively. The play introduces the Greek city state called Thebes, which is suffering a great
plague causing the state to fall apart. A prophecy has been set to recover the plaque by which King
Oedipus must find the killer of Laius, his predecessor. Throughout the play, Sophocles displays an
overarching question of which characters are considered blind, one who remains blind and ignorant to
