The Variation Of Sugar-Collides
The sugar gliders genes coded for them to develop the ability to fly. This variation allowed them
to find more food sources they previously wouldn t have had access to. They may have needed
more food supllies because of competition in their environment. Therefore, this variation is
valuable to the sugar gliders because it prolongs their health and life, which is benefical to their
reproductive success as they can pass on this genefor flying to future offspring.
This variation to the prosimian s chromites might have formed because poisonous berries started
growing in their environment. These posionous berries may only be detected because they are a
different colour from the others which is why chromites became nessasary. Their competition

Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay
When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood
film stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats,
Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all
these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity?
Erikson s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss,
and machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on
the other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as
actors with different roles and these actors have to perform to... Show more content on

Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and
grows distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs
before they fed him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John
Henry took into his grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in
another point of view, he abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who
abandoned the mother, because he had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson,
P.296).This abandonment also lead to another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds
not only the sorrow of having been abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions
(Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have
abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather
lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor their friends very often. They are the
man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man (Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk
songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not bounded by relationships
because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle,

Persuasive Essay On Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is one of the cleanest sources of renewable energy, unlike some other sources
of renewable energy, geothermal energy is contained within a relatively small area, and doesn t
affect local wildlife, it also doesn t produce large amounts of toxic waste, and is nowhere near as
controversial as nuclear power. Unfortunately geothermal energyisn t used nearly as much as many
of the other types of renewable energy, in fact, there are only 12 operating geothermal powerplants
in the US, a relatively small number compared to the 557 coal power plants that currently supply
the United States with its second largest source of power. Yet while the fields of solar and wind
power seem to be growing exponentially, geothermal energy remains relatively small.
Sadly the problem with geothermal energy isn t one that can be easily changed. The reason
geothermal power plants are so few and and far between is the overly specific circumstances that
are needed to harness the underground heat; geothermal power plants require hydrological sites
with naturally high temperatures of around 150 to 370, in the form of wells, hot water is then
pumped out of these wells is then pumped out of these wells, into one of three different systems,
dry steam, dry steam, or binary cycle. Dry steam is the simplest, but also the hardest to find. A dry
steam system will pump hot water out of the earth in the form of steam, since the water is already a
gas, it can be injected straight into the turbine

The Effects Of Prenatal Screening On Children
Prenatal screening is used to detect any potential diseases or disabilities that a fetus may have or
develop in the future. Many procedures are done to test said fetus, including analyzing a sample of
amniotic fluid or testing a few cells from the placenta. Various genetic disorders are tested for, such
as mental retardation, sickle cell anemia, and Tay Sachs. Once informed of a fetuspotential defects,
the parents can then decide to either carry the fetus to full term or terminate the pregnancy. As with
any situation concerning a human life, this has produced ethical issues. For those who believe
prenatal screening followed by abortionis acceptable consider it a moral duty for parents to
prevent a disease or disability that could cause their child suffering if they have the means to do
so. Just as a mother can change her diet during a pregnancy to prevent a mental disorder, parents
can choose to abort a fetus to prevent that child from having a life of pain and suffering. To not
prevent a disease or disorder is to disregard a child s basic human desire to live a normal, healthy
life, and is thus unfair to the child. Further advantages of prenatal screening are that it helps
minimize overall suffering in the world and promotes general welfare. It also not only prevents the
child from physical and emotional distress but it prevents a family s emotional and economical
distress, too. Although prenatal screening and abortion procedure may be relatively expensive, it
could

Environmental Policy in the European Union
1. INTRODUCTION
In last decade we can notice a trend of constant growth of environmental pollution in Europe and
also elsewhere in the world. Every year European Union produces around 2 billion tone of waste
materials and the number is getting 10% bigger every year. There is also a constant increase of
carbon dioxide emissions that are a result of increasing consumption of energy and cars. Majority of
European Union members is fighting with utmost and more and more frequent weather conditions,
heat waves and floods, that have disastrous outcomes economic and also for people. Climate
changes have influence on the environment and our everyday lives. Nineties were the most warm
decade of century across the globe.
Because of all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for that was, that at that time the environmental awareness was still on a really low
level all around the world. In 1960 none of the European members had a clearly defined
environmental policy of their own. Until 1987 the environment was not a priority for European
Community. Certain environment protection laws were adopted which were supposed to release
trading barriers. This laws were intended only for individual domains radiation, vehicle gases,
packaging and labeling chemicals and so on.
Care about protecting an environment somewhat increased in seventies. In year 1972 the
accelerated activities of European Community began with four action programmes. These were
based on vertical and sectoral approach concerning ecological problems. In July 1972 the first
Environmental Action Programme (EAP) covering the period 1973 1976 was adopted at the Paris
Summit of the Head of States and Government. Basics of European Union environmental policy
were that special attention would be devoted to protection of environment in frame of economic
development and improvement of life.
In 1973 the Environment Consumer Protection Committee DGIII and the Committee on the
Environment in the European Parliament were instituted. Second Environmental action programme
followed in 1977 and

Homelessness Is A Problem Of Homelessness
Homelessness is a monster. Each day, there are people on the streets suffering from homelessness.
These unsheltered people litter the streets, and plead for help. There are different types of
homelessness, but the most monstrous is chronic. The chronically homeless are left to endure the
hardships of homelessnesswithout hope of an effective solution. Americans disregard all homeless
populations, but the most heart wrenching group that is disregarded is the veterans. The veteran
homelessness problem is the most ominous type of chronic homelessness, but a solution is
possible. Veteran homelessness is a chronic problem in America today, and it is due to the mental
state of veterans and government s failed responses to ending the problem.... Show more content on

Generally, these are veterans that fought in the Vietnam War, but with more recent wars there is a
new face to veteran homelessness. A shift in demographics is occurring as troops return from
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan... homeless veterans are increasingly younger, female, and
heads of households (Veteran Homelessness). Veteran homelessness chronically affects such a
broad group of people that a solution is imminent. It is no longer the time to allow America s
service men to wander the streets unsheltered. It is time to step up and finally put a stop to veteran
homelessness. There are intricate causes that compound and makes a person considered chronically
homeless. There are homeless veterans that are stuck to live on the streets for reasons that affect
non veterans as well. These include lack of a supportable income, healthcare, and affordable
housing. More specifically, there are complex factors that causes retired service men to be left on
the streets. These causes are directly related to veteran homelessness. The most influential factor
that leaves veterans on the streets is the effects of mental illness and more specifically the effects
that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) plays on the veteran; more than half of homeless
veterans suffer from a serious mental illness (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans). PTSD is
a brain disorder that occurs after someone

How Depression Affects The Quality Of Interpersonal...
Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in the United States. About 20% of
people in the U.S. will experience an episode of depression some time in their lifetime. Of these
people, women make up a majority of this group (Gotlib Hammen, 2008) among men and
women, it is a 1:2 ratio (Kessler, 2003). Depression is responsible for both social and economic
disability among other mental and behavioral disorders during early and middle adulthood
(Goodman Tully, 2008; Wilhelm, 2006). During this period in life, women are most likely mothers
and are still supremely primary caretakers for children (Goodman Tully, 2008; Lamb, 2000).
Depression can negatively affect the quality of interpersonal relationships, including spouses and
children (Hammen, 2008). Mothers have the most contact and influence of a child s caretaking. If a
mother is depressed, that influence would be more impressionable than if the child s father was
depressed in terms of the child s ability to internalize and externalize problems (Goodman Tully,
2008; Connell Goodman, 2002). Children with clinically depressed mothers have been shown to
experience withdrawn or negative interactions with their mothers that can subsequently lead to
behavioral problems (Turney, 2011; Turner Lloyd, 1999).
Depression in mothers can have detrimental consequences on the relationship that a mother has with
their child and the child s future health. One of the greatest risk factors for depression in children

Community Policing History
. Tracing the history of Community policing,
There are Compelling reasons why law enforcement leaders believe that time has come to alter the
police and practice of their organization. These reasons are rooted in the history of policing and
police research during the last quarter of a century in the changing nature of communities, in the
shifting characteristics of crime and violence that affect these communities
Throughout history individuals have been expected to follow the rules of the majority, the demands
to control the behavior of individuals can be traced to the ancient times when the tribe, clan or
family controlled the behavior of the individuals and had the responsibility to enforce its informal
rules or customs. This was the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The paid night watch constables and thief takers all exemplify poor policing strategies that failed by
employing incompetent individuals who do not effectively perform good policing which resulted to
the creation of poor relations within the community.
In the Eighteenth Century, the term police began to be used much to the disappointment of many
English men. One contributor was Henry Fielding, who was appointed as a Magistrate to Bow
Street in 1848. He conceived the idea of crime prevention as a role for the police. He believed that
controlling crime required the cooperation of the public, a strong police force and the elimination
of the causes, thus considered community policing philosophy, considered crime prevention as an
important element of policing

Social Welfare Policies During The Transition Countries Of...
Since graduation from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, I have gained considerable
research experience in Public finance and management. Specifically, I am interested in study of
social welfare policies in transition countries of central Asia. I am concerned with the status of
vulnerable groups of population particularly, the aged, women, children, the disabled, and the poor.
In most transition countries, the political and economic collapse of
90s had the devastating effects on the certain groups of population. The sharp decline in size of the
government has greatly affected and in some sense triggered the transformation of the scope of
social welfare policies. Most Eastern and Central European countries have diminished the scope
social welfare policies in harmonized and planned way.
Instead of diluting the resources and efforts on multiple goals and supporting them in a sickly
manner they focused on a selected public products, projects and programs. Subsequently, quality of
social welfare programs has not suffered much. In contrast, governments across Central Asiacut the
public expenditures on social welfare in incoherent manner.
Half financed public health care and pension systems, child care and early education institutions,
unemployment and disability subsidies have barely survived. Besides, economic reforms in these
countries proceeded with much greater hardships; consequently, benefit payments have been
negligible and social welfare policy in most

Honda s Credibility
Advertisements have been used over hundreds of years with the goal of persuading their viewers
to obey their message. Ads have become ubiquitous in our lives, from magazines pages to the
sides of buses, each trying in various ways to convince the consumer that they need to purchase
the specific product. This year, Honda released a commercial for the 2016 Civic that displays the
car driving out of the designer s brain with the flow of his imagination. It contains no dialogue and
ends with the written words, Direct from our imagination . The advertisement for the Civic uses
aspects of appealing to positive emotion, source credibility and appealing to broad cultural values

Credibility is the amount of perceived training, knowledge and experience of the source by the
viewer (Lecture). Honda uses two different aspects of credibility in their advertisement: the
credibility of the company and of the car s engineer. The car engineer shown at the beginning of
the ad serves as a visual source because the ideas of the car come out of his brain, making him
the designer of the civic. The man was dressed in a lab coat, which serves as an artifact that
helps make the connection that the man is a scientist or engineer who is designing the civic.
People tend to trust professionals more when it comes to building complicated machines such as
a car, which is why the viewer would be more willing to pay attention to the product of
imagination coming from the visual source s head. Additionally, the engineer is a male and
according to Tubbs, men and those who are perceived to have a higher status have a greater
impact on the audience (Tubbs). Males may be more trusted and there are typically more men in
the field of engineering. The choice of a male actor over a female may have been a conscious
decision by Honda in attempts to make the visual source more credible for the consumers
because he must be deemed credible for the audience to entrust the car is well equipped. In
addition, Honda used the credibility of their company to transfer credibility to their product
through both visuals and audio effects. Honda s credibility come from vast majority of America
that drives Honda s and their reputation for running well for years. The ad begins with the Honda
logo and the sound of a ding that Honda uses in many of its other commercials. The significance of
the correlation between corporate credibility and the product s credibility is shown through a study
conducted by Lafferty and Goldsmith. The empirical study examined the credibility of the company

begging would do the trick. Christmas morning, I could guess what was hiding underneath that hot

The molecules are endogenous and exogenous ligands. This binding process is significant in
pathophysiology of sepsis. Endogenous is an infection that occurs internally. While exogenous is an
infection that developed from an outside factor.
The poster showed that mice with this receptor increased inflammation, decreased survival, and
increased bacterial organisms. Another thing that increased was the expression of SRA on
monocytes and macrophages. This means that SRA is binding more often to the negatively charged
molecules in the exogenous and endogenous molecules.
Flow cytometry was used to determine the SRA expression on the control group and the group
that they treated with LPS media. When treated with LPS, the expression increased. LPS is a TLR
4 ligand. They also mixed LPS and PAM3CSK4, which is TLR 2 ligand. When they mixed the two,
the expression was no different than the control cells.
The way they determined the mechanism that increased SRA expression was they treated the cell
line with media that stimulated toll like receptors which are the innate immune receptors in this
case. This is when they used the LPS media and the LPS/PAM3CSK4 media. Then the cells were

The Persian Empire Essay
THE PERSIAN EMPIRE Similar to the Roman Empire the Persian Empire stretched across vast
lands without any serious rivalry. At the height of the empire it stretched across, not only, Asia,
from the Aegean to the Indus River, but also included part of the continent of Africa. We get the
word, Persia, from the Greek word Parsa meaning, Above reproach . The Persians unlike most
other Empires would be ruled under a benevolent ruler. This would bring a large amount of
cultural diffusion to the Empire. The empires history is separated into three historical periods:
Old Persia (600 300 B.C.E), Middle Persia (300 800 B.C.E.) and modern Persia (800 Present). The

Summary Of Christopher Nolan s Evacuation Of Dunkirk
Q. In what ways do Christopher Nolan and ________ develop the idea of causality of war in
Dunkirk and Evacuation of Dunquecue, respectively?
Within Christopher Nolan s Film Dunkirk and _______ s poem Evacuation of Dunkirk both
authors explore the causality of war. Both texts are set in the same situation and both explore the
different aspects of the evacuation of Dunkirk from two similar but different sources. They both
develop the themes of isolation, honour and hope. Specifically, Nolan uses his filmmaking style to
its essence, resulting in scenes of simple but immensely charged visual momentum. Whilst ______
s poem connects to the reader on an emotional level, almost giving the reader a perspective of
what it was like to be a part of the historical event.
Christopher Nolan, throughout the course of his film uses a range muted colours as well as
bluish tones in order to reflect the water and the heavy machinery. Nolan uses a range of camera
techniques including close ups, mid range, long shots as well as the most obvious overhead shots.
Nolan uses these overhead shots multiple times but especially of the soldiers distributed across a
beach convey and unnerving isolation, as it these were there last times on earth as they look as if
they are alone and deserted. Another example of how Nolan s cinematography successfully depicts
the evacuation of Dunkirk is when soldiers are found waiting for the tide in an abandoned boat. In

What Is The Theme Of Camaraderie In All Quiet On The...
The Horror of Camaraderie In the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque and
the essay In the Field by Tim O Brien there is a common theme, camaraderie and the horrors of
war. Camaraderie is when soldiers in the war are helpful towards each other when it comes to
things such as survival during the war. Horrors of war can be shown by seeing the death of a
camarade. Since there is camaraderie shown in both of these pieces it exemplifies the other theme,
the horrors of the war because they are often seeing their camarades fall. In the book All Quiet on
the Western frontthe theme camaraderie is shown often. A scene that really sticks out that shows
camaraderie is when Paul and Albert are both shot, and Albert has to get his leg amputated.
When Paul and Albert are on the train Albert becomes feverish and is going to be let off at the

This is a race that is categorized by its ability to be completely unpredictable. Why walk and turn
left or right, jog or run, go fast or slow, why do any of the things you do and when you do them?
Life is full of choices, as humans we ve a right to take advantage of the many possibilities. There
can t be any one incentive. As people of many choices, it is us that decide what the temptation to lie
is, and there always is one.
People have made every excuse for their behavior. In which case, a less than truthful approach has
always seemed appealing. They don t want to hurt their loved ones, the truth can hurt, they didn t
think of it as lying at the time, they thought nobody would get hurt, it seemed fun at the time, they

is for self preservation. When someone is insincere they are so because they believe that is their

Who lies? From mothers to fathers, children to brothers and sisters, everybody lies. In a few

convincing the consumers that the chipsets are not counterfeit (Arnold 47). This can only be
executed by ensuring that the chipsets are durable. Strategic issues in the industry: The Company
has been on the path of innovation and invention. This is evidenced by their first colonization of
CD Rom controllers. This made the company acquire 50% of the market share of CD Rom
controllers. The largest opportunity for the industry is based on the fact that technology is always
dynamic. In fact, it has reached a point that human lifestyle is defined by the level of advancements
in technology. The most significant threat lies on the validation of the counterfeit claims. In the
event that such claims are substantiated and validated, Media Tek will lose a significant market
share. The risk and uncertainty in the industry emanates from the verity that wireless chipsets are
manmade. It is common knowledge that man is not perfect. There is bound to be some level of
imperfections in technology, which may render purchased handsets to malfunction. Internal

Immanuel Kant Vs Foucault
This piece will begin with the immortal words of Immanuel Kant: Reason does not work
instinctively, but requires trial, practice, and instruction in order to gradually progress from one
level of insight to another . The definition of reason according to Immanuel Kant is that it is a
wave, a never ending influence that is continually constructing and improving previous perceptions
on knowledge. When referring to the Enlightenment in the following piece, the time period that
involved a massive intellectual and rational movement that took Europe by storm in the 18th
century is to be considered. Both essays written by Immanuel Kant, the 18th century German
philosopher, and Michel Foucault, the 20th century French philosopher, titled An answer... Show

By observing the Age of Enlightenment, we can see the influence of the added application of
reason that was used to free cities from the historically pressed minority ordeal. Countless
scientific breakthroughs occurred and many new ideas were formulated as a result of individuals
making use of their own reason without direction from someone else, all in a matter of a few years.
The influence of the Enlightenment thinking is shown by Foucault to have travelled much further
than its time period; influencing recent thought processes such as the modernist movement.
Therefore, it can be said that the Enlightenment can be considered the age of reason because, for
the first time, numerous individuals were able to reason for themselves by the loosening of the
grip of minority and as a result, the root of many modern concepts and ideas as well as modes of
thinking are found in this precise point of

School Lunches And School Lunch Program
A recent study conducted in a rural K 12th grade, 300 student district, has shown the struggle in
persuading students and staff members to participate in the National School Breakfast/Lunch
Program, therefore decreasing sales. The foodservice component of the school is run by a separate
foodservice company. This is of great benefit to the schooldistrict itself because it saves many added
costs in labor, insurance, and benefits. The foodservice company has its own techniques in making
school meals fun, delicious, and nutritious by incorporating different promotions throughout the
year. Because the company s focus is foodservice, their ultimate goal is to have high sales in all
locations. This particular school district is challenging due to the low enrollment of students.
School meals provide one third to one half of a child s daily caloric intake.1 Therefore, school
lunches have a large impact on the health of children who purchase lunch or participate in the
National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The recent change in the NSLP standards gave students
more availability to fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products and required
students to have at least one fruit or vegetable serving on their tray in hopes that healthy eating
behaviors would be increased.2 After review of this program, research shows that fruit selection

Symbols And Reflection Of The Movie Blood Diamond
Reflection Paper: Blood Diamond To buy expensive jewels or even be gifted one has always
seemed ridiculous to me. To wear 10,000 dollars on your finger seems a bit gratuitous. Not only
that but diamonds aren t that rare just hard to get and can be artificially made, unlike gold. For
me, it has always been the symbol for why the trickle down effect does not work. It is rich peoples
priority to keep their money, to keep it in their family, not to pump it back into the economy. I have
thought about the consequences of buying such an expensive piece, but I have never felt about the
horrible process in how they are found bought and sold until watching the movie Blood Diamond
(2006). The first scene of Blood Diamondis brutal to watch although it is fake violence it is
portraying something real, the civil war in Sierra Leone. A war that is described as being funded
by the illicit diamond trade. Leonardo Decaprio plays a South African mercenary, smuggling
diamonds to sell back to the diamond industries in wealthy countries. A Mende fisherman played by
Djimon Hounsou was taken from his home and separated from his family is forced to mine for
diamonds. Djimon and Leonardo join together to try and recover a rare gem that Djimon lost in an

Theme Of Blank Sonnet
A distinguished sense of hollowness, and darkness is discernable in George Elliot Clarke s poem
Blank Sonnet . This poem expresses, the author s difficult and awkward communication with a
lover through a broken relationship. word choice and imagery is imperative to the overall effect
and tone of the poem. The usage of an atypical sonnetstylization, broken sentences, forms of
metaphors, symbolism, sensory language, and alliteration form strong imagery, and a sense of
disconnect. The overall effect leaves the reader with a resonating feeling of emptiness.
The main theme within Clarke s Sonnet is his distance and inability to communicate with a lover.
This poem is written for his lover as an attempt to connect with her, although within the poem, he is
continuing to communicate poorly. The way in which he copes with this broken relationship drives
the tone of the poem.
A common theme throughout the poem is the coping mechanism used for his troubled
relationship. He does not view his alcoholism as a fault, but as a comfort and an escape. He
yearns to sleep beneath a patchwork quilt of rum . (Clarke 6) Furthermore, he wishes to drink
until he is unaware that his relationship is troubled. He wishes for the slow collapse of language
/ [w]ashed out by alcohol. (Clarke 7 8) He desires to detach, and isolate himself from the situation
mentally, rather than remove himself physically. This suggests that he has no wish to recover from
his alcoholism, and no desire to leave his

Famine In Ridley Scott s Black Hawk Down
The first major point left out by Ridley Scott s Black Hawk Down is the initial conditions that
lead to the state of civil war, anarchy, and famine that existed in 1992 1993. The first scene of
the movie shows many Somalis that are dead or dying from starvation. The audience is told only
that Years of warfare among rival clans causes famine on a biblical scale and that one of the
most powerful warlords, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, is a brutal dictator who is willing to starve his
own people. The famine causes the death of 300,000 Somalis, which is enough to prompt a
response by the US and UN to restore order to Somalia and to save the population from starvation.

Ashley Dawson argues that the opening scene ignores the Western world s involvement in
generating the crisis described in the opening scene, which is cause of this misrepresentation of
Somalia. The US supported the Somali dictator Mohammed Siad BarrГ© in order to obtain
strategic military locations close to Middle Eastern oil fields. The US ignored the cruel treatment
that BarrГ© inflicted on his people, spending billions of dollars of military aid in exchange for
strategic military bases (Dawson, 2011, p. 6). Eventually, BarrГ© was forced to adopt a capitalist
agricultural system by the IMF, destroying the traditional agricultural system employed by the
native people. The imposition of capitalist agricultural systems caused a popular resistance
movement to develop in Somalia, which Dawson says is the beginning of the civil war depicted in
the opening scene of Black Hawk Down. Dawson then says that by the time the US intervened in
1993 the famine was almost over, being concentrated in areas still under capitalist agricultural
systems where the militias were fighting against BarrГ© (2011 , p.

Importance Of Canadian Literature
Studying Literature in Grade 12
In this essay, I will prove that graduating students in Ontario should only study Canadian literature
in a Grade 12 English course. While good writers exist in all cultures, Ontario students should only
study Canadian writers. Becoming more familiar with our literature. Three reasons for this are; the
need to focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures: the need to
promote and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors.
I believe that students in Ontario taking English should only study Canadian literature because we
are completely swamped by the American culture around us. I think that this is a Canadian
tradition because we have always been a branch plant of another country starting with England and
France meaning that our own culture has never had the chance to develop since we have always
been under the thumb of a more powerful foreign culture. So, for years, a student in Ontario would
study Shakespeare and other British writers, today they may also study American authors such as
Hemingway. But many schools limit a student s exposure to the Canadian novel to ISP reading
lists. In this sense, Canada is an attic in which we have stored American and British literature
without considering our own. 1 No wonder a Canadian student has problems appreciating their
culture.
Often what Canadian literature is studied is very old. This includes works such as Margaret

The Between Suntrust And Regions Based On Customer Service
In today s banking market what is really considered to be the standard? Most customers are
looking for the same things from their bank of choice and most banks have stepped up to the plate
and stepped into the digital world. People today go to banks they know of through family and
friends or which bank is closest to their home or work. Within the mid south, the most prominent
banking corporations include SunTrust and regions. Within the banking system, there are many
choices, the current choice for most in the mid south is between SunTrust and Regions based on
customer service, easy access to locations, and ease of electronic interface. Customer service is a
large part of any businesses success. It can also be a big deciding factor when someone is stuck
between two options. Many times in the business community the smaller companies are better with
handling customers needs than the larger corporations. The same may be said of most banking
institutions. Although what happens when two banking corporations have almost the same sized
company, but one surpasses the other in customer service? That better customer serving corporation
then forms a better following than the lesser one. Both SunTrust and Regions are fairly prominent
around the mid south. Sun trust is seemingly the smaller of the two but lacks the friendly and
attentive staff of the regions corporation. Regions makes it a point to keep their customers happy
and keep them coming back for all their banking needs. Both

Writing from different viewpoints allows the author, Tim O Brien, to express himself in a more
comfortable manner. Written in this viewpoint, the story is read as a tale instead of an
autobiography and the author becomes more distant with the story like he is looking into it rather

O Brien most likely wrote parts of the story in third person because it is traditional and benefits the

Html Coding And The World Wide Web
HTML Coding
HTML coding is used broadly on the world wide web. Without coding on the internet, users the
codes for a given website and produce what we see on our screens. This form of coding is what
makes web browsing possible; the code writing system was invented by a man named Tim
Berners Lee (the same man who gives these codes an address on the internet) , a man who has
been widely awarded and praised for his work on the internet. Initially, HTML coding is what
makes web browsing on any web browser possible. Basically what web browsers do is that they
read certain codes or code languages. HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is one of the coding
languages that web browsers read. The web browsers read and translate these codes, displaying
and producing what we see on our computer monitors or any internet capable device. Hypertext
Markup Language was invented by a man by the name of Tim Berners Lee, he made this so he
could use his coding language and have it be displayed on the World Wide Web

languages were made to be used on the World Wide Web to provide data and information to

How do different metals react in different anion solutions? After the experiment was conducted it

Magnesium put in lead creates the quickest reaction. When it had reacted it had a thick layer of lead
which brings the magnesium to the bottom. When taken out of the water the magnesium

The Economic Decision Making For Obama s Two Parent
On the other hand, many of the environmental problems the world faces today including climate
change, air pollution, oil spills, and acid rain result from our dependence on fossil fuels. The
burning of fossil fuels produces heat trapping gases that are the main cause of the ongoing rise in
global atmospheric temperatures. Therefore, as a result of the shale revolution Americans seem
to have a hard time to say goodbye to the stereotypes of the past century. Barack Obama declared
comprehensive energy strategy increasingly takes on the character of selective policy,
concentrating not on a wide range of energy, but only on shale gas and oil. America is increasingly
dependent on oil and gas consumption. This situation does not seem to cause any rejections.
Scientists call this phenomenon a cognitive dissonance ; which White House initiatives inherently
possess. It is the inability to reach a consensus between the populist slogans and theoretical
developments, while there is a need for pragmatic economic decision making. We have to admit
that for Obama s two parent term, the Democrats couldn t precisely highlight key points, and build
a hierarchy of integrated energy policy. US hegemony is almost not valid in renewable energy. On
a number of key areas of alternative energy, China and some EU countries are ahead of the United

Introduction: Reaction of a compound with water can result in a splitting, or lysis, of the

This reaction is spontaneous for almost all esters but can be very slow under typical conditions of

First Amendment and Right to Privacy
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and the first right guaranteed by the Bill
of Rights, declares that there will be no law made respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
grievances (First Amendment, n.d.). An individual s right to privacy is not guaranteed in the
United StatesConstitution or the Bill of Rights, however, there have been amendments created that
seek to protect specific and private rights individuals. Even so, there are limitations to what type of
freedoms are protected under the First Amendment and to what extent an individual s privacy is
protected. To begin with, there are three types of speech that are not protected by the First
Amendment: obscenity, libel, and slander. Obscenity is anything which depraves or corrupts minds
open to immoral influence (Freedom of Speech, 2003). Despite the fact that the definition of
obscenity has changed throughout the years, Congress, in general, has reached a consensus in
determining that obscenity covers anything that is directed towards or involves youths, including
child pornography. For example, in 1949, the Supreme Court upheld, in Rosenberg v. Board of

Supreme Court Case Essay
1. What is the role of the Supreme Court?
Echoing my forum statement of week 2, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) was
created by, and receives its authority from Article III of the United States (U.S.) Constitution in
1787 and ratified in 1789 [1]. As head of the U.S. Governments judicial branch, the role of
SCOTUS is to enforce the Rule of Law of the U.S. Constitution, seeing that the lower courts do not
undermine the Constitution and the freedoms and liberties it provides to the citizenry; they are the
ultimate arbiters in judicial cases. SCOTUS is comprised of a Chief Justice and eight Associate

For decades, the Bureau of Land Management has relied on the strategy of rounding up excess
horses with helicopters and storing them in a system of private ranches and feedlots. But now, with
almost 50,000 horses in storage, the system is out of space and money. In response, the agency has
drastically cut roundups, leaving horses to multiply out on the range.
The Bureau of Land Management says that Western rangelands can sustain about 26,000 wild
horses. There are now over 40,000. In five years, there could be more than 100,000, according to

Civilism And Civilization In William Golding s Lord Of The...
Every day we hear about violence in the news, about terrorists, shooters, and robbers that we do
not associate with ourselves. However, hidden within everyone is that innate evil as is shown
through Golding s story. The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is set on an
uninhabited island where a group of young British boys find themselves stranded without any
adults. Overcoming their joy, the boys develop a society of sorts, finding ways to survive and get
rescued. However, the civilizationdivides. Some of the boys go astray, their primitive instincts
emerging through their actions as they become more violent. The boys lose their identities as
cultured humans. They revert to the nature of pre civilization beings with the aid of the masks
they don in order to hunt as well as to identify savages. Golding develops the characters,
specifically Ralph and Jack, showing the loss of their innocence and steady maturing. However,
overly exposed to the wild, Jack and the hunters id, or their instincts unbounded by society or
morals, materializes. The id is the impulsive section of the mind that contain the inner desires and
are restricted by the ego and superego which are the consciousness. The continuous battle between
savagery, represented by the Lord of the Flies, and civilization, represented by the conch and
Piggy, is presented throughout the story as the two sides of society battle. In Golding s Lord of the
Flies, it is depicted through the actions of the boys that when separated from civilization, one s
inevitably evil nature emerges, their true attributes exposed as their ties to society dissolve.
With the assistance of the masks and the deindividuation that occurs when acting as a group, the
boys on the island lose their sense of identity. Jack and his hunters made clay masks in order to
hunt, claiming the pigs they preyed upon did not smell them but saw them. As he set the mask
upon himself, [Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling (Golding, 64)
The mask was what Jack hid [behind], liberated from shame and self consciousness, (64) As Jack
puts his mask on for the first time, it foreshadows the future violence that will come. He snarls as if
he was an animal, showing

Coyotes Vs Wolf Research Paper
Coyotes vs Wolves Wolves and coyotes are very smart animals. They have extremely good
eyesight and sense of smell. They can hear calls from very far away and they both have dog like
appearance, but although wolves and coyotes are very similar physically, they have very little in
common in terms of social behavior. Starting with the differences between coyotes and wolves their
habitat is the chief difference. Coyotes are often considered intelligent and adaptable. They can be
found in any variety of habitats including forests, deserts, prairies, mountains, agricultural areas, and
urban areas. They can adapt to a wide variety of environments, sometimes they can be found in
some human habitats,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wolves are pack animals. Only the alpha pair in each pack breeds. Coyotes are less company
lovers, and all individual coyotes breed if they re able to find a mate. Although coyotes
occasionally form family unit packs, it s not their main lifestyle as it is for wolves. Coyotes pair
for a number of years, and then change mates. Wolves usually mate for life and both parents take
care of the young. The coyotes mate between February and April and the gestation period lasts
60 to 63 days. The pups are born blind. Their eyes open after about 14 days. The pups live and
play until they are six to ten weeks old and within a year, they go their own way, staking out their
own territory. While the wolves mate typically between January and March and the gestation
period lasts 63 days. Pups are born blind and defenseless also. The pack cares for the pups until
they fully mature at about 10 months of age when they can hunt on their own. Once grown, young
wolves may disperse. The last difference between wolves and coyotes is the way to communicate
between them. Coyotes communicate in many ways to each other and howling is the most
common way of communication. A howl is high pitched and eerie, and is often heard at night.
Howling is used to gather other coyotes and to inform others of their location. Whereas, wolves
howl to communicate with the other members of the pack and other packs. They also howl to
attract mates and when they sense any danger, to bring a pack back together and to keep strangers

Robert Cohn Foil
Authors tend to use different techniques in order to make the plot more interesting and compelling
to the audience they are trying to reach. One of the technique they use is foiling. They use foil in
order to develop characters. Character creation and the way a character acts really can affect the
stories the characters are from. When someone analyzes a character they have to take in mind their
feelings their emotions and how they are they want to connect with the characters on a whole new
level. Authors use foils to represent the main character in a better way, they utilize another character
that has opposing traits than the main character to do this. In the novels, The Sun Also Rises and
Heart of Darkness, the authors Ernest Hemingway... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is telling his story of his adventure to his job on the Congo, presenting the story inside of a

of Kurtz, which happened to be the opposite of his. At first, he is slight displeased and shows
disgust towards the actions of the other workers at the company and Marlow; stopping in plot
ever so often to regain his thoughts because it made him upset. However, as he continued deeper
in the Congo, he starts to change into Kurtz making Kurtz and Marlow complex. The reader can
not tell if they are different people or perhaps the same. Before this transformation, Marlow and
Kurtz was already similar in a few ways. For example, Marlow and Kurtz both shared a certain
amount of respect for the natives, Kurtz even had a mistress that was native. However, they may
have a certain level of respect for them they both feel that they are savage like and they are not
equal to the white men. This shows the white man s burden, of the white man that feels the need to
educate the natives. Marlow even ends up agreeing later on in the book that they should be

Themes Of Voyeurism In Peeping Tom
Helens blind mother, Mrs. Stephens, in the movie Peeping Tom, plays a crucial role in enticing
Michael Powell s major themes of voyeurism and fear, and is the only character who is able to
bring a deeper understanding of Mark as a person and the humanity he hides deep within his
childhood.
Film scholar Linda Williams has observed that silent films in the early 1900 s often portrayed the
heroin to be naГЇve and figuratively or even physically blind. This rests on the concept of voyeurism
and objectification of women as well as the fact that women exist solely for the purpose to be
looked at and are not in the position to see for pleasure themselves. The true satisfaction attained
during voyeuristic activities is from the victim being unaware of being watched; making a blind
woman an ideal victim for a voyeur because of their inability to detect being watched. However,
Mark does not kill Mrs. Stephens because even though he prepares to kill her at one point, he
realizes that she is unable to watch her own death due to her blindness, thus not contributing to his
film and experiment. This shows that Mark is not an ordinary Peeping Tom, and that his voyeurism
stems primarily from his childhood and the filmed episodes of his life that his father directed. His
perverted acts of voyeurism and violence are for purposes much larger than just his own pleasure.
An important quote in the movie is when Mark asks, Do you know what the most frightening thing
in the world is? and he

When the market demand for shipping capacity was high, owners would keep a vessel in
operation as long as possible. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There
had been very few scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the
worldwide fleet of capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason
might be the market demand is strong recently.
Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns.
For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would
increase, demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes.
Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size)
drive the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate).
Factor 2: World economy
The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic
industries. When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products
increase thus will result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession,
the hire rate will be lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999
because of the effect of 1998 financial crisis.
Factor 3: Age of ships
Average hire rate is influenced by the age of the ships. If a company s vessels are relatively new
than the industry average, it earned a premium in daily hire rate

Manzana Insurance Company

Manzana Insurance Fruitvale Branch (Abridged)
Harvard Business School
Executive Summary
Fruitvale s core management problem is the low performance due to an unacceptable long
turnaround times (TAT). Especially because of the late Renewals many of FruitvaleВ
ґs customers
are turning to its major competitor Golden Gate. The operating performance needs to be improved
by eradicating the bottleneck in Underwriting. This will be achieved by restructuring and
simplifying the process. Through our solution we are going to achieve a new TAT of 0,518 days
(3:53 hours). Thereby we hope to recapture the lost market share and satisfy our customers. In
average all daily incoming insurance requests will be processed in an extremely ... Show more

An UT will therefore underwrite two requests. After underwriting both each team member will
rate one of the two requests. It is important that the DCs distribute similar requests in terms of
rating time to one certain UT. Due to the fusion of step two and three 25% (time savings in
writing and getting into the case) or more of rating time will be saved. In order to stay within a
save margin we reduced the weighted average rating time by 25% and added this to the
weighted average time of underwriting. We divided the weighting time of the first request lying
on the desk while the second is being processed on both requests. In average 12 requests will be
processed by the UTs every 109.6 minutes. Every 54.8 minutes (109.6/2 min) 6 requests can be
processed by the policy writing department. Hence the average service rate in step two and three is
the same. This would also increase productivity by decreasing queuing time.
Including all these changes our calculations lead to a TAT of 3:53 hours (see Apendix)
We will not set priorities on certain products (RUNs, RERUNs, RAPs, RAINs). We will rather
implement FIFO for all products, independent of the profit generated. In order to motivate the
employees to do so Salary/Plus can set incentives by rewarding an increase of the weighted
average time needed to process a request. This is also a very fair solution with regard to the clients.
Conclusion

How Can An Actor Be A Cultural Icon
Can an actor be a cultural icon? A cultural icon can be everyone and everything person, thing,
buuilding. Cultural icon is someone that idolized others. Some people are thinking that actress,
singer or poltics are a cultural icon, but some of them disagree. Angelina Jolie is a cultral icon
because of actress, humanitarian work, and role model. One of the reasons why Angelina Jolie
is a cultural icon is actress. Angelina is one of the best Hollywood actress. For example,
Angelina Jolie won the Oscar are best supporting actres for Girl, Interrupted (Rebecca Ford).
This quote shows that she won the Oscar price. It is the one of the most important prices for
actress. To won is not easy, so she must be very good. She does not give up. She is fighting to end

others, but she do. Even when they have enough money they do not give to others, they prefer to
keep this moeny for themselves. It is a good character trait. She is not miserly. If, she can help
she is doing this. For example, Jolie adopted a son from Cambodia and named him Madox.
Three years later, she adopted a daughter Zahara (biography.com Editors). She adopted two kids.
Not everyone can love someones kids or be enough brave to adopted. It is so courageous decision
to undertake to make care about kids. Angelina have also her kids but she loves all off her kids

Driving Age Research Paper
The driving age in the state of Virginia is fine and should not be changed. Making the driving
age higher doesn t help anyone. If the driving age is changed teens that have jobs that drive
themselves to work will not be able to anymore. Even though it would make a little less traffic it
will inconvenience a lot of people. Lots of accidents happen because of people not looking at the
road, using their phones, Dozing off, or even just daydreaming, but if teens are taught better while
in school, or drivingclass, they will know not to do something silly like that.
Only 6.4% of accidents are caused by teens, Over 50% of these accidents are caused by alcohol
impaired drivers. Over 50% of all fatal highway crashes involving two or more cars are alcohol
related. According to the NHTSA, over 3,000 people were killed and over 300,000 injured in

A lot of people don t trust teen drivers with driving in heavy traffic, and long distance trips. If an

would try to blame it on the teen saying that they are inexperienced and it s all their fault and most
likely the teen would get their brand new license revoked.
If you want someone to be successful you will help them in anyway you can. Like if someone
one know is struggling with a social problem you would introduce them to your friends. So if
you see a teen driver struggling on the road driving badly you should correct them. Increasing the
age of driving doesn t help 16 year olds that have jobs it just makes life harder for

Barack Obama s State Of The Union Speech
Truthfully, there are a lot of significant Economic issues that were addressed in President Obama
s State of the Union Speech. Obama had many successes in the past year, including: the strongest
production of jobs in fifteen years, drivers saving an expected hundred dollars because gasoline
prices were extremely low, and the unemployment rate plummeting to a miniscule 5.6%.
However, the wages of middle class Americans remain unchanging. President Obama plans to fix
this issue, using what he referred to as Middle Class Economics . What is the idea of Middle

Throughout the twenty first century, technology has been one of the major focusses of people
world wide. Technology has even helped the unemployment rate by creating new jobs that
wouldn t have been around twenty years ago. Overall, technology is a helpful tool that is used to
advance our knowledge of the world we live in. However, technology can also be used for wrong
doing. One example of how technology can be used for wrong doing comes in the form of identity
theft. According to Merriam Webster, identity theft is the illegal use of someone s personal
identifying information in order to get money or credit. For example, in modern day America,
companies are putting the personal information of their customers in the cloud, a data server that is
connected to the internet. As technology advances, it is getting harder for companies to protect
your personal information, and easier for identity thieves to hack into the cloud and steal it.
Thankfully, President Obama is determined to strengthen cyber security, and so he has introduced a
series of proposals designed to aid the fight against identity theft. Firstly, Obama wants companies
to share information with the government, in order to help the companies scan their servers for
malicious software known as malware. Also, the president wants a system where customers will be

  • 2. The Variation Of Sugar-Collides The sugar gliders genes coded for them to develop the ability to fly. This variation allowed them to find more food sources they previously wouldn t have had access to. They may have needed more food supllies because of competition in their environment. Therefore, this variation is valuable to the sugar gliders because it prolongs their health and life, which is benefical to their reproductive success as they can pass on this genefor flying to future offspring. This variation to the prosimian s chromites might have formed because poisonous berries started growing in their environment. These posionous berries may only be detected because they are a different colour from the others which is why chromites became nessasary. Their competition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats, Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors with different roles and these actors have to perform to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and grows distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296).This abandonment also lead to another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man (Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle, ... • 4. Persuasive Essay On Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is one of the cleanest sources of renewable energy, unlike some other sources of renewable energy, geothermal energy is contained within a relatively small area, and doesn t affect local wildlife, it also doesn t produce large amounts of toxic waste, and is nowhere near as controversial as nuclear power. Unfortunately geothermal energyisn t used nearly as much as many of the other types of renewable energy, in fact, there are only 12 operating geothermal powerplants in the US, a relatively small number compared to the 557 coal power plants that currently supply the United States with its second largest source of power. Yet while the fields of solar and wind power seem to be growing exponentially, geothermal energy remains relatively small. Sadly the problem with geothermal energy isn t one that can be easily changed. The reason geothermal power plants are so few and and far between is the overly specific circumstances that are needed to harness the underground heat; geothermal power plants require hydrological sites with naturally high temperatures of around 150 to 370, in the form of wells, hot water is then pumped out of these wells is then pumped out of these wells, into one of three different systems, dry steam, dry steam, or binary cycle. Dry steam is the simplest, but also the hardest to find. A dry steam system will pump hot water out of the earth in the form of steam, since the water is already a gas, it can be injected straight into the turbine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Effects Of Prenatal Screening On Children Prenatal screening is used to detect any potential diseases or disabilities that a fetus may have or develop in the future. Many procedures are done to test said fetus, including analyzing a sample of amniotic fluid or testing a few cells from the placenta. Various genetic disorders are tested for, such as mental retardation, sickle cell anemia, and Tay Sachs. Once informed of a fetuspotential defects, the parents can then decide to either carry the fetus to full term or terminate the pregnancy. As with any situation concerning a human life, this has produced ethical issues. For those who believe prenatal screening followed by abortionis acceptable consider it a moral duty for parents to prevent a disease or disability that could cause their child suffering if they have the means to do so. Just as a mother can change her diet during a pregnancy to prevent a mental disorder, parents can choose to abort a fetus to prevent that child from having a life of pain and suffering. To not prevent a disease or disorder is to disregard a child s basic human desire to live a normal, healthy life, and is thus unfair to the child. Further advantages of prenatal screening are that it helps minimize overall suffering in the world and promotes general welfare. It also not only prevents the child from physical and emotional distress but it prevents a family s emotional and economical distress, too. Although prenatal screening and abortion procedure may be relatively expensive, it could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every year European Union produces around 2 billion tone of waste materials and the number is getting 10% bigger every year. There is also a constant increase of carbon dioxide emissions that are a result of increasing consumption of energy and cars. Majority of European Union members is fighting with utmost and more and more frequent weather conditions, heat waves and floods, that have disastrous outcomes economic and also for people. Climate changes have influence on the environment and our everyday lives. Nineties were the most warm decade of century across the globe. Because of all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason for that was, that at that time the environmental awareness was still on a really low level all around the world. In 1960 none of the European members had a clearly defined environmental policy of their own. Until 1987 the environment was not a priority for European Community. Certain environment protection laws were adopted which were supposed to release trading barriers. This laws were intended only for individual domains radiation, vehicle gases, packaging and labeling chemicals and so on. Care about protecting an environment somewhat increased in seventies. In year 1972 the accelerated activities of European Community began with four action programmes. These were based on vertical and sectoral approach concerning ecological problems. In July 1972 the first Environmental Action Programme (EAP) covering the period 1973 1976 was adopted at the Paris Summit of the Head of States and Government. Basics of European Union environmental policy were that special attention would be devoted to protection of environment in frame of economic development and improvement of life. • 9. Homelessness Is A Problem Of Homelessness Homelessness is a monster. Each day, there are people on the streets suffering from homelessness. These unsheltered people litter the streets, and plead for help. There are different types of homelessness, but the most monstrous is chronic. The chronically homeless are left to endure the hardships of homelessnesswithout hope of an effective solution. Americans disregard all homeless populations, but the most heart wrenching group that is disregarded is the veterans. The veteran homelessness problem is the most ominous type of chronic homelessness, but a solution is possible. Veteran homelessness is a chronic problem in America today, and it is due to the mental state of veterans and government s failed responses to ending the problem.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally, these are veterans that fought in the Vietnam War, but with more recent wars there is a new face to veteran homelessness. A shift in demographics is occurring as troops return from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan... homeless veterans are increasingly younger, female, and heads of households (Veteran Homelessness). Veteran homelessness chronically affects such a broad group of people that a solution is imminent. It is no longer the time to allow America s service men to wander the streets unsheltered. It is time to step up and finally put a stop to veteran homelessness. There are intricate causes that compound and makes a person considered chronically homeless. There are homeless veterans that are stuck to live on the streets for reasons that affect non veterans as well. These include lack of a supportable income, healthcare, and affordable housing. More specifically, there are complex factors that causes retired service men to be left on the streets. These causes are directly related to veteran homelessness. The most influential factor that leaves veterans on the streets is the effects of mental illness and more specifically the effects that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) plays on the veteran; more than half of homeless veterans suffer from a serious mental illness (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans). PTSD is a brain disorder that occurs after someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. How Depression Affects The Quality Of Interpersonal... Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in the United States. About 20% of people in the U.S. will experience an episode of depression some time in their lifetime. Of these people, women make up a majority of this group (Gotlib Hammen, 2008) among men and women, it is a 1:2 ratio (Kessler, 2003). Depression is responsible for both social and economic disability among other mental and behavioral disorders during early and middle adulthood (Goodman Tully, 2008; Wilhelm, 2006). During this period in life, women are most likely mothers and are still supremely primary caretakers for children (Goodman Tully, 2008; Lamb, 2000). Depression can negatively affect the quality of interpersonal relationships, including spouses and children (Hammen, 2008). Mothers have the most contact and influence of a child s caretaking. If a mother is depressed, that influence would be more impressionable than if the child s father was depressed in terms of the child s ability to internalize and externalize problems (Goodman Tully, 2008; Connell Goodman, 2002). Children with clinically depressed mothers have been shown to experience withdrawn or negative interactions with their mothers that can subsequently lead to behavioral problems (Turney, 2011; Turner Lloyd, 1999). Depression in mothers can have detrimental consequences on the relationship that a mother has with their child and the child s future health. One of the greatest risk factors for depression in children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Community Policing History . Tracing the history of Community policing, There are Compelling reasons why law enforcement leaders believe that time has come to alter the police and practice of their organization. These reasons are rooted in the history of policing and police research during the last quarter of a century in the changing nature of communities, in the shifting characteristics of crime and violence that affect these communities Throughout history individuals have been expected to follow the rules of the majority, the demands to control the behavior of individuals can be traced to the ancient times when the tribe, clan or family controlled the behavior of the individuals and had the responsibility to enforce its informal rules or customs. In the Eighteenth Century, the term police began to be used much to the disappointment of many English men. One contributor was Henry Fielding, who was appointed as a Magistrate to Bow Street in 1848. He conceived the idea of crime prevention as a role for the police. • 13. Social Welfare Policies During The Transition Countries Of... Since graduation from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, I have gained considerable research experience in Public finance and management. Specifically, I am interested in study of social welfare policies in transition countries of central Asia. I am concerned with the status of vulnerable groups of population particularly, the aged, women, children, the disabled, and the poor. In most transition countries, the political and economic collapse of 90s had the devastating effects on the certain groups of population. The sharp decline in size of the government has greatly affected and in some sense triggered the transformation of the scope of social welfare policies. Most Eastern and Central European countries have diminished the scope social welfare policies in harmonized and planned way. Instead of diluting the resources and efforts on multiple goals and supporting them in a sickly manner they focused on a selected public products, projects and programs. Subsequently, quality of social welfare programs has not suffered much. In contrast, governments across Central Asiacut the public expenditures on social welfare in incoherent manner. Half financed public health care and pension systems, child care and early education institutions, unemployment and disability subsidies have barely survived. Ads have become ubiquitous in our lives, from magazines pages to the sides of buses, each trying in various ways to convince the consumer that they need to purchase the specific product. This year, Honda released a commercial for the 2016 Civic that displays the car driving out of the designer s brain with the flow of his imagination. It contains no dialogue and ends with the written words, Direct from our imagination . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Credibility is the amount of perceived training, knowledge and experience of the source by the viewer (Lecture). Honda uses two different aspects of credibility in their advertisement: the credibility of the company and of the car s engineer. The car engineer shown at the beginning of the ad serves as a visual source because the ideas of the car come out of his brain, making him the designer of the civic. The man was dressed in a lab coat, which serves as an artifact that helps make the connection that the man is a scientist or engineer who is designing the civic. People tend to trust professionals more when it comes to building complicated machines such as a car, which is why the viewer would be more willing to pay attention to the product of imagination coming from the visual source s head. Additionally, the engineer is a male and according to Tubbs, men and those who are perceived to have a higher status have a greater impact on the audience (Tubbs). Males may be more trusted and there are typically more men in the field of engineering. The choice of a male actor over a female may have been a conscious decision by Honda in attempts to make the visual source more credible for the consumers because he must be deemed credible for the audience to entrust the car is well equipped. In addition, Honda used the credibility of their company to transfer credibility to their product through both visuals and audio effects. Honda s credibility come from vast majority of America that drives Honda s and their reputation for running well for years. The ad begins with the Honda logo and the sound of a ding that Honda uses in many of its other commercials. This poem expresses, the author s difficult and awkward communication with a lover through a broken relationship. word choice and imagery is imperative to the overall effect and tone of the poem. The usage of an atypical sonnetstylization, broken sentences, forms of metaphors, symbolism, sensory language, and alliteration form strong imagery, and a sense of disconnect. The overall effect leaves the reader with a resonating feeling of emptiness. The main theme within Clarke s Sonnet is his distance and inability to communicate with a lover. This poem is written for his lover as an attempt to connect with her, although within the poem, he is continuing to communicate poorly. The way in which he copes with this broken relationship drives the tone of the poem. A common theme throughout the poem is the coping mechanism used for his troubled relationship. He does not view his alcoholism as a fault, but as a comfort and an escape. He yearns to sleep beneath a patchwork quilt of rum . The US ignored the cruel treatment that BarrГ© inflicted on his people, spending billions of dollars of military aid in exchange for strategic military bases (Dawson, 2011, p. 6). • 30. Importance Of Canadian Literature Studying Literature in Grade 12 In this essay, I will prove that graduating students in Ontario should only study Canadian literature in a Grade 12 English course. While good writers exist in all cultures, Ontario students should only study Canadian writers. Becoming more familiar with our literature. Three reasons for this are; the need to focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures: the need to promote and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors. I believe that students in Ontario taking English should only study Canadian literature because we are completely swamped by the American culture around us. I think that this is a Canadian tradition because we have always been a branch plant of another country starting with England and France meaning that our own culture has never had the chance to develop since we have always been under the thumb of a more powerful foreign culture. So, for years, a student in Ontario would study Shakespeare and other British writers, today they may also study American authors such as Hemingway. But many schools limit a student s exposure to the Canadian novel to ISP reading lists. In this sense, Canada is an attic in which we have stored American and British literature without considering our own. 1 No wonder a Canadian student has problems appreciating their culture. Without coding on the internet, users the codes for a given website and produce what we see on our screens. This form of coding is what makes web browsing possible; the code writing system was invented by a man named Tim Berners Lee (the same man who gives these codes an address on the internet) , a man who has been widely awarded and praised for his work on the internet. Initially, HTML coding is what makes web browsing on any web browser possible. Basically what web browsers do is that they read certain codes or code languages. HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is one of the coding languages that web browsers read. The web browsers read and translate these codes, displaying and producing what we see on our computer monitors or any internet capable device. Hypertext Markup Language was invented by a man by the name of Tim Berners Lee, he made this so he could use his coding language and have it be displayed on the World Wide Web . These coding languages were made to be used on the World Wide Web to provide data and information to scientist all around the world as well as to let these scientist collaborate together to pull information together. Although the word wide web had already been invented Sir Tim had to find a way to connect this information all together. After the experiment was conducted it was very clear on which metal was most reactive in anion solution and which was not with watching the reaction occur. It is clear that zinc and silver nitrate had the slowest reaction as it was creating rust on the metal. The chemical equation for zincand silver is, Zn+Pb(NO3) Zn+Pb(NO3)2. Magnesium put in lead creates the quickest reaction. When it had reacted it had a thick layer of lead which brings the magnesium to the bottom. When taken out of the water the magnesium disintegrates. The chemical equation for magnesium and lead is Pb+Mg(NO3)2 Pb+Ag(NO3)2. The Economic Decision Making For Obama s Two Parent On the other hand, many of the environmental problems the world faces today including climate change, air pollution, oil spills, and acid rain result from our dependence on fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels produces heat trapping gases that are the main cause of the ongoing rise in global atmospheric temperatures. Therefore, as a result of the shale revolution Americans seem to have a hard time to say goodbye to the stereotypes of the past century. Barack Obama declared comprehensive energy strategy increasingly takes on the character of selective policy, concentrating not on a wide range of energy, but only on shale gas and oil. America is increasingly dependent on oil and gas consumption. This situation does not seem to cause any rejections. Scientists call this phenomenon a cognitive dissonance ; which White House initiatives inherently possess. It is the inability to reach a consensus between the populist slogans and theoretical developments, while there is a need for pragmatic economic decision making. We have to admit that for Obama s two parent term, the Democrats couldn t precisely highlight key points, and build a hierarchy of integrated energy policy. Chemical Kinetcs – the Hydrolysis of Pna Ester Chemical Kinetcs The hydrolysis of PNA Ester Introduction: Reaction of a compound with water can result in a splitting, or lysis, of the compound into two parts. Organic molecules containing a group of atoms called an ester can be hydrolyzed by water to form a COOH group (carboxylic acid) and an HO group (alcohol) as follows: RCOOR + H2O ( RCOOH + HOR This reaction is spontaneous for almost all esters but can be very slow under typical conditions of temperature and pressure. Obscenity is anything which depraves or corrupts minds open to immoral influence (Freedom of Speech, 2003). Despite the fact that the definition of obscenity has changed throughout the years, Congress, in general, has reached a consensus in determining that obscenity covers anything that is directed towards or involves youths, including child pornography. • 45. Civilism And Civilization In William Golding s Lord Of The... Every day we hear about violence in the news, about terrorists, shooters, and robbers that we do not associate with ourselves. However, hidden within everyone is that innate evil as is shown through Golding s story. The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is set on an uninhabited island where a group of young British boys find themselves stranded without any adults. Overcoming their joy, the boys develop a society of sorts, finding ways to survive and get rescued. However, the civilizationdivides. Some of the boys go astray, their primitive instincts emerging through their actions as they become more violent. The boys lose their identities as cultured humans. They revert to the nature of pre civilization beings with the aid of the masks they don in order to hunt as well as to identify savages. Golding develops the characters, specifically Ralph and Jack, showing the loss of their innocence and steady maturing. However, overly exposed to the wild, Jack and the hunters id, or their instincts unbounded by society or morals, materializes. The id is the impulsive section of the mind that contain the inner desires and are restricted by the ego and superego which are the consciousness. The continuous battle between savagery, represented by the Lord of the Flies, and civilization, represented by the conch and Piggy, is presented throughout the story as the two sides of society battle. In Golding s Lord of the Flies, it is depicted through the actions of the boys that when separated from civilization, one s inevitably evil nature emerges, their true attributes exposed as their ties to society dissolve. With the assistance of the masks and the deindividuation that occurs when acting as a group, the boys on the island lose their sense of identity. Jack and his hunters made clay masks in order to hunt, claiming the pigs they preyed upon did not smell them but saw them. As he set the mask upon himself, [Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling (Golding, 64) The mask was what Jack hid [behind], liberated from shame and self consciousness, (64) As Jack puts his mask on for the first time, it foreshadows the future violence that will come. Wolves usually mate for life and both parents take care of the young. The coyotes mate between February and April and the gestation period lasts 60 to 63 days. The pups are born blind. Their eyes open after about 14 days. The pups live and play until they are six to ten weeks old and within a year, they go their own way, staking out their own territory. While the wolves mate typically between January and March and the gestation period lasts 63 days. Pups are born blind and defenseless also. The pack cares for the pups until they fully mature at about 10 months of age when they can hunt on their own. Once grown, young wolves may disperse. The last difference between wolves and coyotes is the way to communicate between them. Coyotes communicate in many ways to each other and howling is the most common way of communication. A howl is high pitched and eerie, and is often heard at night. Howling is used to gather other coyotes and to inform others of their location. Themes Of Voyeurism In Peeping Tom Helens blind mother, Mrs. Stephens, in the movie Peeping Tom, plays a crucial role in enticing Michael Powell s major themes of voyeurism and fear, and is the only character who is able to bring a deeper understanding of Mark as a person and the humanity he hides deep within his childhood. Film scholar Linda Williams has observed that silent films in the early 1900 s often portrayed the heroin to be naГЇve and figuratively or even physically blind. This rests on the concept of voyeurism and objectification of women as well as the fact that women exist solely for the purpose to be looked at and are not in the position to see for pleasure themselves. The true satisfaction attained during voyeuristic activities is from the victim being unaware of being watched; making a blind woman an ideal victim for a voyeur because of their inability to detect being watched. However, Mark does not kill Mrs. Stephens because even though he prepares to kill her at one point, he realizes that she is unable to watch her own death due to her blindness, thus not contributing to his film and experiment. This shows that Mark is not an ordinary Peeping Tom, and that his voyeurism stems primarily from his childhood and the filmed episodes of his life that his father directed. His perverted acts of voyeurism and violence are for purposes much larger than just his own pleasure. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There had been very few scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the worldwide fleet of capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason might be the market demand is strong recently. Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns. For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would increase, demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes. Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size) drive the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate). Factor 2: World economy The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic industries. When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products increase thus will result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession, the hire rate will be lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999 because of the effect of 1998 financial crisis. In order to stay within a save margin we reduced the weighted average rating time by 25% and added this to the weighted average time of underwriting.
