The Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem
Tropical rainforests contains the most diverse ecosystems of any biome, containing over half of the
world s flora and fauna species despite only covering less than 6% of the earth s surface.
Ecosystems have flourished here because of plentiful rainfall (over 100mm per year) a humid but
consistent temperature (http://www.blue planetbiomes.org/rainforest.htm). All this combines to
something of a nightmare to live in, especially for someone who has never experienced it before.
So whether your plane has crash landed into the Amazon or you were stupid enough to follow
iMaps when you told it to take you to the local McDonalds, this guide will instruct you to survive
in a tropical rainforest.
Water
You might think this one is easy, you re carrying a drink bottle with you! But that bottle isn t going
to last more than two days in this humid environment, and you re not going to make it out in that
time. Tropical Rainforests contain water sources that can be found in the form of streams or
lakes or even tiny water vines. One tip into finding a lake or stream is look for a place where
shorter, fern plants flourish, and not much tall trees are found. If a water source cannot be found,
rainwater is more than enough to keep you alive. Remember before consuming any water, to boil it
over a fire (see Fire ) so that any bacteria is killed off. (http://news.discovery.com /adventure

Soft Media And Soft News Media Essay
Just how influential are soft news outlets in informing the american people? I approached this
topic with an interest in the answer because soft news media is one of the early ways that I was
introduced to politics. It is through this medium of media that I have seen many people increase
their political participation. There have been some studies in this topic but I want to see how
prevalent these studies are to today s soft news media. One of the more useful resources that I had
while writing this paper is that of Matthew A. Baum. He has written many studies regarding soft
newsin the media throughout the years. I believe that soft news outlets are a great way for the
politically uninformed to become better informed rather than watching the more hard news
outlets. What does the term soft news actually mean? Well one great way of defining it is as a
style and genre that blurs the line between information and entertainment. (Lisa Mills Brown
2014) A few examples of some of the more well known soft news programs are The Daily Show
and The Tonight Show hosted by a variety of anchors. In my opinion, what makes these shows
so popular is how each show is able to combine jokes and lighthearted humor to news that would
otherwise be serious. Accordingly, many people probably feel the same way. By moving away
from the more traditional hard news, people are probably looking more towards soft news media
as a way to get their daily political news. With a variety of different

Birth Weight Variability
CRE # 4: Birth Weight and Language Development The study Birth Weight Variability and
Language Development: Risk, Resilience, and Responsive Parenting by Sheri Madigan, Mark
Wade, Andre Plamondon, Dillon Browne, and Jennifer Jenkins, published in the Journal of
Pediatric Psychology, discussed birth weight and language development and language abilities. The
study briefly summarized the objective of the research, previous research, then went into the current
research study discussing the methods, results, and discussion/limitations. The current research
aimed to examine whether normal ranges of birth weight variation were associated with the
development of language ability at 36 months of age and whether the protective factor of responsive

More specifically, the study gave a great overview of how birth weight is positively associated with
differences of language ability in children at 36 months. From a critical assessment standpoint, this
study did a great job of assessing the relationship between birth weight and developmental delay
regarding language development and ability. Clearly, the information and research were accurate
but it was presented in an engaging way through research methods and the discussion section. My
only criticism of the study was the longitudinal design, which caused attrition and also measured
different things at different time points. By this, I mean that I personally think that it would have
been more beneficial to have consistent measures across all time points to more adequately and
accurately compare all facets being studied (i.e., maternal behavior and children s receptive
language using the PPVT). However, this limitation was noted by the researchers and suggested to
future longitudinal studies examining the impacts of low birth weight on language abilities. The
study sparked my interest in how parents can help to facilitate language development, as the article
mentioned that postnatal factors, such as responsive parenting, can help buffer risks for children
who were born with low birth weight. This involves a matter of resiliency and

Essay on Indentity Loss
In The Odyssey and The English Patient the main character, Odysseus and Almasy, suffer from a
form of identity loss and try to regain it. They both regain their identity through the help of other
people. Every person that stumbles across a piece of their past helps them regain a piece of their
identity.
Because he cannot remember Almasy must get help remembering his past from the people around
him. One of his first memories came from the book he brought with him through the fire a copy of
the Histories by Herodotus (Ondaatje pg 16). Hana reads some of the notes that he had written in
the book; she reads of the different winds the , the secret wind of the desert, whose name was

In the arboured bedroom the burned patient views great distances (Ondaatje pg 135) in doing so
Almasy, remembers the desert in Africa, he remembers his adventures. In 1930 we had begun
mapping the greater part of the Gilf Kebir Plateau, looking for the lost oasis that was called
Zerzura (Ondaatje pg 135) he remembered many of his other adventures there. All of his memories
about Gilf Kebir Plateau made his think of Katherine, his lost lover.
Odysseus is remembered of his great conquest when he is on the land of the Phaiakians where
Demodokos sings of his conquest. Demodokos tells of the Trojan horse that Odysseus built to
trick the city of Troy and take it over. When Odysseus heard this he melted, and from under his
eyes the tears ran down drenching his cheeks (Lattimore pg 134). The singer had reminded
Odysseus of one of his great achievements that was part of his identity.
Caravaggio forces Almasy to remember most of his past right before the crash when he starts to
ask questions. When you crashed in the desert where were you flying from (Ondaatje pg 167).
Almasy had already remembered that he was once in the Gilf Kebir and what he was doing there
but now he had to remember why he was back there again. I had gone there to collect someone. In
late August. Nineteen forty two (Ondaatje pg 167). Almasy goes on to tell about Katherine and
how he had left her there until he could get help, that was when he got burnt.

Meeting With Mentees
This week s meetings with both of my mentees was a bittersweet moment. I feel like both of my
mentees have grown throughout the semester and I am glad to be there to see them grow. This
week s topic was about self care and meeting with an advisor. I was very confident presenting the
materials in both of my meetings because I have already done these topics before. Even though, I
have already gone over the materials for both topics before, I still had to prepare the different kinds
of questions I am going to ask my mentees. Since, they have different concentrations in Psychology.
In addition, I think that showing my mentees the self care Ted talk s video really helped them

Health and social care professions have in common the concept of a duty of care toward their
users. This means that the wellbeing of the service user should be central to their work. All
treatment given must have a therapeutic benefit to the user or must be essential for saving life.
Service users should be given sufficient information about any treatment they are offered so that
they can make an informed decision about whether or not to take it. Information should include the
benefits and possible risks of the treatment, the likely duration of treatment and any financial costs.
The service user should also be given information on alternatives to the treatment being offered.

Postpartum Depression (PPD)
Target Audience and Aim Postpartum depression (PPD) affects about eighty five percent of new
mothers and persists as long as a year after childbirth (Texas Medical Association, 2015). In spite
of the scope of this problem and the benefits of screening women, it s not standard procedure
(New York State Department Of Health, 2016). This policy brief was written for healthcare
providers that treat new mothers at risk for PPD with the goal of improving screening and the
number of women receiving appropriate treatment. The recommendations address measures to
improve early identification and follow up care for women found to have PPD. Problem About
eight to fifteen percent of childbearing women experience PPD during the first year after childbirth,

young children presents a missed opportunity to help families and children in a way that will have
far reaching implications for the productivity, health, and well being of the next generation (Center

How Far She Wentt Summary
A.
How Far She Went The themes in this story are generational shortcomings or curses, how families
relate to one another including how far we are willing to go for those who love us, and it also
touches on what it s like to be a rebellious teenager. Conflict drives this entire story. At the
beginning, the main character has both external conflict with her granddaughter, They had
quarreled all morning, squalled all summer (the opening line of the story, 281), and internal conflict
she was done with that. And what was it worth anyway? (on no longer being a mom, 283). The
conflict between the two of them ramps up over the course of the story until the end, when we see
that, despite their arguments and dissatisfaction with one another, ... Show more content on

Compare And Contrast Han And Roman Attitude Towards...
DBQ on Han and Roman attitudes toward technology
The Han dynasty and Roman empire lasted through periods of enlightenment where new ideas and
concepts were brought up. Although in slightly different time periods, the Han and Romans both
experienced an influx of new technology that changed their ways of life. The Han s attitude toward
technology and labor was very open and optimistic. On the other hand, the Roman attitude towards
technology and labor was relatively more strict and they didn t really see technology as something
enlightened .
The Han Dynasty viewed technology as essential in various ways. Documents 1 and 2 show how
technology is an essential thing and that although it is great, government intervening must take
place to assure everything goes to plan. Document 1 mentions some organization and order that s
needed to make sure everything works, and document 2 mentions how the workers are using crude
brittle tools and need to get new tools that are in good condition so they can work more efficiently.
Both of these documents may have a slight bias considering both of them are written by Han
government officials and they might want to get higher positions and this may influence their
writings. It was interesting that in document ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Harm Caused by Bioterrorism
Micro/Diseases
Bioterrorism
Bioterrorism is purposefully releasing biological agent toxins to cause harm and terrorize people.
Bioterrorism was first thought of somewhere in the 1340 s, this was when diseased horse corpses
were catapulted over castle walls in France. Germ warfare was also used in the medieval times in
the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; human bodies were infected with the plague and used as
ammunition in central Europe. During World War I Germany had attempted to infect the Allies
using anthrax through livestock, which they failed in doing. By Germany attempting this it caused
for Geneva Protocol, this is the restriction of chemical and biological weapons being used during
war. However, the first bioterrorismoccurred in the 1984 in the United States, members of the cult
ha sprinkled salmonella on salad bars around Wasco County. There were 750 cases of food
poisoning and another 45 cases of people being hospitalized. Many terrorist prefer to use
biological agents instead of any other weapon for a few reasons that are; they can easily get there
hands on them, they are inexpensive, it is hard to detect, they are easy to make and deliver.
Bioterrorism has been used and effective between countries for many years. It was first used in the
medieval times to end siege surrounding and attacking a town or building isolating people from
supplies and attempting to get a surrender from the inside. In 1340, a bunch of attackers hurdled

Analysis Of The Kite Runner
The Kite Runner Essay No one is born evil, the environment in which one is raised influences
what kind of person they will be. The Kite Runner, a historical fiction novel written by Khaled
Hoesseni, follows a young Afghani boy named Amir. Amir makes some regrettable decisions in
his youth and the guilt haunts him throughout his life as he searches for a way to redeem himself.
Amir also grew up with his friend/servant named Hassan. Hassan is a Hazara boy that lived in the
mud shack behind Amir s house. Amir is a very selfish and cowardly character, but he was not born
with these character traits, some factors can be attributed to Amir s selfishness or cowardice. Baba,
Amir s father, would always treat Hassan with the same amount of love and respect as he would
Amir, if not more. This angered Amir as he wanted Baba all to himself. In addition, Amir is
somewhat of a shy person that likes to keep his thoughts and emotions bottled up inside, which is
not positive for anyone. Finally, the juristic difference in social classes in Afghanistanthat separate
Amir and Hassan also contribute to Amir s cowardice. Amir s upbringing and the society he lived
in directly attribute to Amir s cowardice. Baba treated Hassan as if he were his own child and this
proves to be harmful to Amir. During the winters in Kabul kite running was a staple activity and a
family tradition for most. The tradition is no different with Amir, every year he would fly kites with
Hassan and Baba. Amir notes that,

Writing Challenges In Overcoming A Fear Of Writing
You want a question that brings the reader inside! You want a question to excite the readers, and
pull them inwards, so they can connect to the story when you re writing! When you are writing,
you must pull the reader in! They must know what s next!
However big or small, everyone has experienced challenges in life. A long time ago, a friend of
mine once told me that to overcome a challenge; you need to embrace the problem instead of
rejecting it. Now I realize what she was trying to say. When you have a problem, don t run away
from it, because then you will never learn how to rise above it. This is especially true in
overcoming a fear of writing.
Overcoming a fear of writing is hard if it starts in kindergarten. I had the most beautiful
handwriting in class. I had received many complements from my teachers for the writing
workbook assignments. But I really never liked to write. I did not like writing at all! I had tried
by best to be happy but it did not work well. When I wrote, I thought moodily, this is boring.
When I wrote, I felt angry because I couldn t spell all the words right. I did not know what to say
or write down, and this caused me more frustration. After writing, my hands would feel tired. There
was no happiness in writing for me, so decided to just give up.
Whenever I was forced to write for my portfolios by hand, I would always complain, trying to
wiggle myself out of it. I would do preposterous things: I would whine, be very angry, frustrated,

Our current policies and procedures focus on ensuring that all passengers, regardless of their

Mass Media Bias And Its Effect On The Media
Having control over an entire country s population s opinion is a powerful thing to have.
Possessing that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even
who they like and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are
expected to give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The
topic I will be exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it effects their viewers. This
is an important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any
country that uses mass mediato disseminate information. The information can be given to the
viewers with a certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be
unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to
research how mass media news outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes in to
picking the news stories covered. These are controversial topics to get into, but important to
consider. They can have a very big impact on things like elections for a political office, support or
dislike of a certain group, or can sway your opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. My
sources will need to show specific examples of how the media is biased towards one opinion, what
the effects are from this are, and who makes the determines the bias that is being displayed.

The Different Ways Of Love
Something to be felt
Love can be interpreted in many different ways by who you are, and how you feel towards it. It
can give your life another meaning or it can make it a living hell. It has many different
characteristics to it that will make you think about it in a new way. Love has many different
seasons to it, and can be expressed in many different ways. There is a theory that gives every type
of love a meaning. For every person love can mean something different. I will always love and
respect my family no matter what happens. I have always told my dad, If you take care of me
now, I will take care of you later. Family comes first no matter what, because they are the
building blocks to a part of your life. They will never stop loving you even in the worst situations.
John Allen Lee made a theory, Color of Love, showing the different types of love in people s life
based off the Greeks. Philos, which means people in Greek is expressed through brother and
sister love, parents and children love, and friend to friend love. I love my grandmother dearly; if it
wasn t for technology and medicine created she would not be with me right now. My love for her
grows and grows every day. She is fighter and always will be. Whenever I see her she gives me the
presence of fulfilling happiness and love and I couldn t ask for more. She always has

Analysis Of Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway
A key belief within our society is that there are many sides to any story, and to gain full
understanding, one more confront and engage with all aspects. There are instances, however,
when the scope of the story makes the full truth unattainable. This is the case of World War I. The
Great War was nearly impossible to understand while it was taking place, and although nearly one
hundred years have passed, little concrete clarity has been achieved regarding the overall truths
and experiences of this war. Claire Tylee, a historian who focuses on the woman s role in World
War I, highlights the ineffable aspect of the war even for the most skilled authors, saying that:
reviewing a novel in 1917, Virginia Woolfsuggested that the War was... Show more content on

And the war goes on, indifferent to these human actions, meaningless, destructive, and apparently
endless (Hynes, 127). This was a war that touched every aspect of human life, even diluting
something as pure as love. Living with another but in internal isolation became extremely
common because: all wars divide divide not only our side from theirs, but soldiers from civilians,
men from women, one generation from another, war lovers from war haters. These divisions don t
end with the war s last shot: they continue into the following years... (Hynes, 337). The Great War
created a new kind of love story, thus reflecting the truths and lasting impacts on all corners of
society. After this war, the previous perception of love was no longer attainable, as each individual
lived in the harsh reality brought upon by extreme isolation of experience.
The climate upon returning home can be understood by observing the strain in even the closest
relationships, thus showing the isolation endured within society. Since Septimus and Rezia met
during wartime, their relationship fit within the context of chaos, so when placed in a quiet city, the
relationship that they had built crumbled. This partially was due to inconsistency in experience, as
it was impossible to understand what someone else had gone through. Septimus, for example, had
lost his best friend and lover in battle, yet had never let himself confront these feelings. Rezia, on

As insignificant as 4% may seem, it has a very large impact on forensics and the entire criminal
justice system. When DNA tests become invalidated, the test can no longer be relied on to be
accurate. Forensics relies on the total accuracy of their test. When a test s accuracy cannot be
verified, it cannot be used as evidence. With all of the data that laboratories have to process, how
can the accuracy of the data be checked? In 2009, there were an estimated 26 million Child ID Kits
distributed by the National Child Identification Program alone. For the safety of their children,
more and more parents are turning to forensic analysis to protect their families. In each of the

Internet Gambling
Running head: CASE STUDY IV: INTERNET GAMBLING
CASE STUDY IV:
Internet Gambling
May 6, 2006
This document will inform you about the history of internet gambling, the existing issues, and a
number of concerns involved with online gambling. Prior to the launching of the World Wide Web
in 1993 which changed the setting of gambling, people had to travel great distances to gamble. The
world s first virtual online casino, Internet Casinos, Inc. (ICI) commenced operation on August 18,
1995 with 18 different casino games. Most of these online gambling companies are located outside
of the U.S. to avoid government prosecution. ICI operates out of the Turks and Caicos Islands
(Kish, 1999). One of the main reasons internet gambling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This so far seems to be the best solution, however ethical and moral dilemmas still rest in the
hands of our lawmakers today. The next issue facing internet gambling is taxes. This seems to be
the government s biggest issue. This is because of the billions of dollars we mentioned for profit
by these online sites, government can gain significant amount of money from it. The legalization
of Internet gambling may cause states to lose some revenue generated from legalized gambling
operations because many gamblers would spend their money online (Lassani, 1998). Moreover,
states lose revenue by not being able to tax gamblers who win over the Internet. Gamblers who win
over the Internet have an incentive not to pay taxes on their winnings because the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) lacks the resources to track online gamblers (Lassani, 1998).
The likelihood of addiction to Internet gambling among both children and adults is an extremely
important concern. In relation to addiction, children are more likely to become addicted to
something new than adults (Smith, 2004). For example, the video game like nature of virtual
casinos, labeled the crack cocaine of gambling, could make online gambling a temptation difficult to
resist. Furthermore, the fact that the Internet gambler need not leave the comfort and privacy of his
or her home could mean that an individual might become easily addicted. This is the worst

Workplace conflict is a specific type of conflict that occurs in the workplace. According to Cloke
and Goldsmith, Most executives, managers, and employees face conflicts on a daily or weekly
basis, spending from 20 percent to as much as 80 percent of their working hours trying to resolve
or contain them (Cloke Goldsmith, 2011). It is an inevitable part of our workday life that can be
caused by many factors, such as different values, beliefs, opinions, and points of view. It can
create a great deal of tension for all those involved. Our workplace are already stressful enough
before conflictcontributes to its share of stress. Ineffective management s styles, hierarchical
structures, misunderstandings, and unrealistic expectations are just a few factors that help
shape the conflicts that may arise at the workplace. We all come across at least one incident in
our lives that is challenging and we are baffled on what decision is to be made. This paper will
then report an incident in my life involving a conflict at my workplace by probing my thoughts
and feelings. First, I will describe the conflict situation and issues of contention. Second, I will
discuss how the conflict was dealt with. Third, I will explain what could have been done
differently to effectively resolve the dispute. Firstly, for the purpose of this paper, I work at
Reitman s in the St. Vital mall and I will be talking about a conflict I was involved. Cloke and
Goldsmith states, The causes of these disputes

The Importance Of The English Language
CHAPTER I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.0. Introduction All over the world, language is a
very important tool of communication. It is used in everyday life because of the need for
communication options or expressing feelings. Successful communication must involve a
speaker and a listener (interlocutor) who both understand the language being used. To make sure
that a language is known, it implies proficiency in the four language skills: speaking, listening,
writing and reading. According to Gary Rybold (2006:16 17), we can improve several critical
thinking skills by studying debate: Debate will help you to become a better writter. Once you
complete your research, you must be able to write speeches or briefs, short organized arguments
that helps you to understand and explain your viewpoint. He continues by saying: Debate will
help you to become better listeners. When members of the other team are speaking, you must
listen to what they say so that you can respond. In many debates, you will have a partner. You will
have to listen to him or her carefully in order to advance your side. You will become a critical
listener which means that you will think what is being said. When taking in consideration the
importance of the English Language nowadays in the world, none can refuse that it has become the
dominant language of the present historical era, that is, an international language with regards to
the large number of people who use it as a tool of communication. To support this,

The Ownership of Time Warner
In 50 s, there are over 500 media companies in America, but through many integrations, there are
only 6 major media institutions in America and they dominate nearly 98% of the market in
America. The media monopoly written by Ben Bagdikian in 1983 criticized that the concentration
of the media institution in America is fundamentally anti democratic.
Moreover, In the process of globalisation, people of different countries are becoming world
audiences . The demands for media texts produced by these 6 media institutions are increasing. For
example, In Hong Kong, most of the foreign films shown in cinema are produced from Hollywood.
And the programmes of the popular paid TV channels are bought from these 6 major media
institution such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the above, it is shown that Time Warneris a very powerful media institution which holds all
kind of media. It possibly has great influences in the local US. Firstly, Ben Bagdikian stated that an
impressive picture of diversity that there are different kinds of publishing imprints in the market is
created. Consumers seem to have many selections. But actually, consumers have limited choices
only because many of them are owned by Time Warner and they may consist of similar ideologies
of the institution. Consumers are possibly imbued with the ideologies of Time Warner.
Secondly, Bagdikian questioned the editorial independence because editors may be required to
protect interests of the mother company. For example, a film produced by the studio of Time
Warner is commented from the public in both positive and negative sides. the editor or even the
executive of the magazines of the Time Warner would concern the interests of the Time Warner.
Hence only the positive comments may be selected to inform but neglect the negative comments in
order not to affect the box office. From the above case, the information informed to the public may
not reflect the real case.
Finally, concentrated media ownership can create strong political influences. The owners of the
media institution can also have direct control of over media products in order to create political
influence by promoting ideas that enhance their interests. For example, Time magazine

Independency And Maturing In Treasure Island
Themes
Independency and Maturing
Treasure Island is a story about adventure. However it encompasses the theme of Independency
and maturing. Jim is a young boy who is in the middle of becoming a Independent and mature
adult. He has developed throughout the adventure and has turned into a role model for the others
around him. He is very courageous and has developed mature habits as the book progresses top the
end.
The uselessness of Wealth
Treasure Island is the story of a voyage in which the pirates tend to get rich. Many of the pirates on
the boat were very poor. The treasure was a motive for them throughout the whole book. The
pirates and crew desired wealth and were extremely greedy. The theme of uselessness of wealth is
one that constantly reappears throughout the whole book. Stevenson portraits this when the pirates
constantly switch sides, betrayed each other, and do very violent and uncivil things just to get to the
treasure. Stevenson portraits the uselessness of desire when the pirates discover that the treasure
map leads them to a deserted hole. X did not mark the spot as finding nothing distresses the pirates.

Native Hawaiians And Native Americans
When Native Hawaiians welcomed Captain Cook and his crew, they began a journey that would
lead to the crumbling of Hawaiian culture. After Captain Cook, missionaries continued to travel to
Hawaii to, in their opinion, help the Hawaiian people. Native Hawaiians were viewed as savages
and were seemingly given the best assistance from the missionaries. However, the help that the
Hawaiians received led to them being demoralized and hurt psychologically and physiologically. In
order to succeed, underdogs often need the assistance of others. However, too much aid from others
can result in the help becoming the underdog s Goliath instead of their savior. The Hawaiians,
being thought of as the underdogs by the missionaries, were given an overwhelming amount of help
which led to the missionaries becoming the Hawaiian s Goliath. Before Captain Cook stumbled
upon Hawaii, the Hawaiians lived in harmony with the aina, or the land. They lived by ahupua a,
or strict land divisions that respected the natural landscape. Communities were created around
rivers and water sources. The Hawaiians had a strict law system called the kapu. They lived
with great respect to the land and believed in demi gods such as Pele, the goddess of the volcano,
or Mau i, who was believed to have pulled the islands out of the ocean in order for people to live
on the land. Peace and prosperity thrived throughout the islands because people understood that

Catcher In The Rye Phoniness Analysis
Phoniness in The Catcher in the Rye
While phoniness and loss of innocence are unavoidable parts of life, Holden Caulfield, in The
Catcher in the Rye, cannot seem to accept it which leads him to depression and mental instability.
Holden is easily aggravated by any impression of phoniness and he realizes that all adults exhibit
pretentious qualities. As a result, he tries to protect all children, the only innocent beings in his life,
from being exposed to phoniness. However, growing up and losing innocence are not preventable,
thus causing him to exhaust himself through his useless efforts. Holden s dislike towards phoniness
and hypocrisy in the adult world leads him to try and protect the innocence in younger generations
and ultimately leaves him disappointed in his inevitable failure to do so. Holden often addresses
his hostility toward phoniness in the adult world because he does not understand why adults find
the need to misrepresent themselves or their feelings. At his old school, Elkton Hills, he observed
that the headmaster went around shaking hands with everybody s parents [...] except if some boy
had little old funny looking parents (17). He could not tolerate seeing people act this way and left
the school. However, he is faced with phoniness at his new school, Pencey, as well. The school s
advertisement presents some hot shot guy on a horse jumping over a fence even though there is no
polo team (4). He also notices the phoniness in his classmates including

The Effects Of Tylenol Products On The Economy
According to Lewis (2006), crisis is an interruption from previously normal state of functioning
resulting in turmoil, instability, and a significant upheaval to a system (p. 27). In other words, a
crisis is a negative predictable or unpredictable event that affects the future trend of individuals,
groups, organizations, and government. For instance, pharmaceutical company Johnson and
Johnson had an unpredictable crisis in 1982 with its product Tylenol, which was laced with
cyanide and led to several murders in Chicago. The events of this crisis could have changed the
perception of Tylenol products. Another example of organizational crisis was the predictable 2012
Hurricane Sandy. Although companies of all sizes expected the Hurricane due to the weather
forecasting, some areas in New York and New Jersey were affected worse than others. There were
businesses that terminated operations for several business days. In addition to Hurricane Sandy
being an organizational crisis, it was also a crisis for many families that lost power in their homes
and a crisis for government departments such as FEMA (Federal Emergency ManagementAgency),
and other agencies within local and state governments.
Anxiety (or stress) should not be mistaken for a crisis. For instance, a parent being late picking up
his/her child from a daycare is not a crisis, it is anxiety that is sometimes manifested with a fast
heartbeat, extreme sweating, etc. On the other hand, the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting

The Toilet
The modern day toilet has been an innovation that has cleaned up the world s sanitary problems
since the late 1800s when it was created. Imagine what life would be like without the use of the
toilet? Think about an average person in the American society lasting a lifetime without one? Well
luckily thanks to the invention of the toilet, most people in the world do not have to worry about
living in unsanitary conditions without one. The invention of the toilet has helped change the

Kay Keating and many other writers 3. agree that he is praised for inventing the valve and siphon

importance because it made the modern day toilet possible. Kay Keating points out that Thomas
Crapper also held nine patents towards the formation of the modern toilet (Keating 1). Many parts
and pieces have been attributed to the invention of the toilet along with many types of decorations
that have been added to the toilet throughout its time of being created as works of art. Writers from
Inventhelp.com state that Sir John Harrington invented a facility (toilet) that had a seat, a bowl,

a toilet. Inventhelp.com also writes that Sir John Harrington invented a very primitive version of
the water closet which was water stored in a compartment used for washing away
contaminants(Inventhelp.com 1). During the time of Sir John Harrington and a short while before
Thomas Crapper, the toilet was somewhat more of an art for decorating rather than a sanitary
device since it was so expensive at the time(Yadav 1). Decorations of the toilet show that the device
itself was highly valued in time period that it

Bloodstain Pattern Paper
When bloodstain pattern analysts are analyzing bloodstains, there are several factors that they must
take into consideration. Surface tension and texture are some of these factors that must be observed
when examining bloodstain patterns. Surface tension is a property of a liquid that is responsible
for the attraction between the molecules of the liquid and makes it contract and assume the smallest
possible shape. (J Slemko Forensic Consulting Inc, page) . When bloodhits a hard smooth surface,
surface tension causes the blood drops to hold together and appear circular. (http:/
/www.clt.uwa.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/2301650/fsb05.pdf). Blood that hits a linoleum
surface will be somewhat distorted and have scalloping around its peripheral edges (J Slemko

dropped onto wood or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The angle of impact is the acute angle that is formed when a blood drop strikes a target
(Mrs.Moore, 2013, slide 12 ) . Blood that drops from a 90o angle will form a circular bloodstain
and will have a equal length and width. (J Slemko Forensic Consulting Inc, page). However,
blood is dropped from an angle less than 90o will form an elliptical shape and point in the
opposite direction from which the blood originally came from (J Slemko Forensic Consulting Inc,
page). The more the angle of impact decreases, the more the stain is an ellipse (http:/
/www.clt.uwa.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/2301650/fsb05.pdf). Height has an affect on
bloodstain patterns too. The higher the blood falls from, the more satelline splatter will be created
(http://www.clt.uwa.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/2301650/fsb05.pdf). The more satelline
splatter will make the overall stain larger, which is why a blood that fell from 50 cm will create a
smaller strain than blood fell from

Make in India: the road ahead for India s Development Saga or is it just another rhetoric?
Abstract:
Make in India campaign is an initiative that attracts the industrialists to make India a manufacturing
hub that helps to create jobs. India ranks 142nd in the ease of doing business and it is becoming
increasingly difficult for both Indian and foreign businessmen to start a business in India. The
infrastructure in India is not good enough to attract investors. There is a lack of proper connectivity
between the cities in India. The other bottleneck are taxation, Government policies, labor laws, ease
of obtaining licenses and land acquisition. India must also compete with its neighbor China as both

Historically, India has always been an agricultural nation. The major share of GDP is from this
sector till the early 1950s and 60s. Down the line, its share began to decline and service sector
started to emerge. Today service sector players a prominent role in the economyof India. On the
other hand, Industrial sector has been growing right from the beginning but the growth is minimal
when compared to service sector. The Following graph depicts the percentage share of Individual
Sectors in the country. Figure 1: Shares of Agriculture, Industryand Services in India
As observed clearly from the above graph, the growth of Indian Manufacturing Sector has been
minimal. This can be attributed to the myriad factors that hinder the Indian Industrial sector. On a
closer introspection, there are major reasons in the country which holds back the Indian Economy.
Firstly, India lacks the optimum prerequisite for the growth of Industrial Sector i.e Infrastructure.
India is lagging in terms of infrastructure and more private players and public private partnership
should be encouraged to bring about the change. One such example is Jamshedpur built by TATA.
It shows that the problems are able to overcome with proper policy changes.
Secondly, power poses the next hindrance for the Industrial Sector. The issues related to power
should be resolved as early as possible in the near future. Lack of power is a big hurdle to the
running of industries. Many

Man Eaters of Tsavo
The Man Eaters of Tsavo The drive to colonize the continent of Africa in the 19th centuries brought
the European imperial powers against difficulties which had never been encountered before. One
such difficulty is that of the local wildlife in Africa, such as lions or other big game animals. In
The Man Eaters of Tsavo, by Colonel John Patterson, a railway bridge project in East Africais
terrorized by a pair of man eating lions. This completely true story shows the great difficulty in
colonizing Africa by demonstrating the somewhat harsh environment of Africa. The story begins
with Col. John Patterson arriving in Mombassa in March of 1898 on the East African coast. All

but Patterson is able to get a shot off and wounds the lion. Patterson follows the lion and
manages to get another hit, thusly bringing down the lion. The lion dies out in the brush, and
then is taken back to the camp where it is skinned. The other lion is killed roughly two weeks
later, taking 6 shots from Patterson to finally bring the lion down after a long and difficult
struggle. Upon the news of the lions being killed, the workers return to work on the railroad. The
railroad reaches Nairobi shortly thereafter. This story has been put into movie format on two
occasions, the most recent being The Ghost and The Darkness in 1996 starring Val Kilmer and
Michael Douglas. Although this book was extremely popular when it was first published, the
movies have made the story much more popular (it was my first exposure to the story of the man
eating lions). The movie does capture the basic essence of the terror caused by the lions, but
doesn t follow the story as originally told by Patterson, they even create a whole new character.
Overall, I enjoy the movie a great deal, but it doesn t follow the actual story close enough for it to
be on par with reading the book. This tale is an autobiographical account of the most famous
incident of man eating animals by the man who hunted them, Col. John

How to configure explicit proxy? o Direct configuration:
One can manually set a browser s network setting for proxy by providing the Destination
IP(DIP) and Destination Port(DPort) and supported protocols.
In this case all traffic is forwarded to the proxy; however, there is another way in where traffic
is forward to proxy based on requested URL. o Proxy Auto Configuration (PAC file) and its

A PAC file is a text file of functions and the URLs to reroute the traffic based on URLs. For

Memory Essay
Memory is defined as the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of
information. Our memory can be compared to a computer s information processing system. To
remember an event we need to get information into our brain which is encoding, store the
information and then be able to retrieve it. The three stage processing model of Richard Atkinson
and Richard Shiffrin suggests that we record information that we want to remember first as a
fleeting sensory memoryand then it is processed into a short term memory bin where we encode it
( pay attention to encode important or novel stimuli) for long term memory and later retrieval. The
premise for the three step process is that we are unable to focus on too much... Show more content

The amount remembered depends on the time spent learning. Even after we learn material/names,
additional rehearsal increases retention. For novel verbal information, practice effortful processing
does indeed improve our memory. We also retain information better when our rehearsal is
distributed over a period of time, known as spacing effect. People who have experienced serial
position effect strengthen the benefits of rehearsal. When shown a list of words/names and then
immediately asked to recall the items in any order, they struggle to recall the list. They remember
of the first and last words/names better than those in the middle. This is probably due to the fact
that the last names/ items are still in short term memory; people briefly recall them especially
quickly and well. But after a delay, after they shift their attention from the last names/items their
recall is best for the first names/items. We must remember that our memory system processes
information not just by repetitive rehearsal but also by encoding its significant features.
Strategies and devices that help us remember information that requires effortful processing are:
encoding its meaning, visualizing, and mentally organizing the

The Accounting Of Territorial Formation
The accountant of the conquest, and the making of what is today Latin America is a debatable
subject in the field of humanities, especially in the field history. The most widespread approaches
of this history are that of violence, war, oppression, possession of territories, and foundation of new
colonies. In Frontier of Possessions, Tamar Herzog, a historian, professor of Latin American
presents an account of the conquest from a different perspective, one that proposes that the
acquisition of the territory of the New World by Spainand Portugalwas a result of interactions of
many actors that caused territorial division in both Iberia and the Americas(Herzog, 6). Hence, I

Under those premises, Herzog steps away from comparative history. And focus at history that look
at the information, in a thematically agreement with specific actors, and arguments, rather that in
sequence, and progression in particular place. From the above mentioned, when analyzing the
territorial division in the Americas is necessary to ponder why the treaties failed? Was not the
Tordecillas treaty, which gave the right to conquest and posses the New World, enough? This
question is very important, and Herzog explores it: the treaty of Tordecillas did not specify a
geographical division; European couldn t agree, and trust their science or modernization. This
contradictory approach is important in the narrative of Frontiers of Possessions; Herzog presents an
opposed view to narrative about the modernity of the Europeans conquerors. It is ironic to think
about modernization, conquest, and possessions of lands when European couldn t trust their own
modernity, and yet used it as a justifiable reason to posses. This comes to show that these groups of
people were common people that possibly did not understood or even care about modernity, but
rather possession through different means. As an illustration, Herzog points out that Spaniard and
Portuguese did not bother about linear or zonal classification of the land.

Social And Cultural Context Of Psychology
Katja Gavrilina
Define the term Psychology and discuss its history in light of social and cultural context,
highlighting the significance of different perspectives in Psychology.
Psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes and human behaviour. It had
roots in philosophy and physiology, before becoming an independent scientific discipline in the
late 1800 s. Descartes (1641) suggested that the mind and the body work separately, together
creating the human experience (Mastin L. 2008). This idea of so called dualism shaped a number
of on going discussions in modern psychology, such as the nature nurture debate. In 1879 the first
experimental laboratory was founded by Wilhelm Wundt, in Leipzig, Germany. This fundamental
moment is referred to as the birth of Psychology.
Until the 1900 s psychologists mainly studied the conscious human experience. Sigmund Freud,
Austrian physician, caused a ground breaking shift in this field (1890 s 1930 s). He brought special
importance to the unconscious mind, arguing that early childhood experiences and unconscious
urges shape our adult personality. He emphasized the importance of sex and stages of early
development. Contributing psychoanalysis in the 20th century, Freud had an enormous impact on
the field of Psychology. His theory is unscientific and based on his individual cases, which makes
it hard to generalize his assumptions. Freud s work was also criticized by feminist Karen Horney,

Social Media And Social Networking
Social media is the communication between individuals and groups to share and exchange their
ideas through internet. The social networking is part of social media which plays the important
role in today s life. The biggest impact of the social networking is on children, youngs, and
adults. Nowaday children are growing up surrounded by technology. They like to use
technology such as mobile, tablets, and computers because they can connect easily to social
network. We all know how important social networking can be part someone s life. You are
certainly no stranger to hear about social networking. Because now it is rapidly increasing a
number of social networking, such as Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and others.
According to social media Pro Con.org only 26% of people were using social media in 2008
while within only 6 years the number went to 74% which is such a big dramatic change. Social
network networking is a social structure that is formed from the individuals who tied with one

Edward R. Murrow s See It Now
Television has drastically changed over time in terms of its content, reach, and accuracy. In 1954,
journalist Edward R. Murrow and his television series See it Now were dedicated to revealing the
truth to their audience no matter how unpleasant the news. Murrow had been specifically interested
in revealing the truth about Senator Joseph McCarthy, who had carried out investigations against
government workers and those of public institutions who were believed to have ties to
communism. Murrow did not appear to feel obligated by McCarthy to only report positive things
about him, despite the fact he was a public figure with a lot of power who could destroy his
company and reputation. Working for CBS, the news Murrow reported had been extremely... Show

There is a wider variety of channels in terms of quantity and quality. People have the option to seek
news from multiple sources in order to validate it and formulate their opinions on issues. Because of
this, television does not have as much influence today as it had in the 1950s. With the
development of other forms of media such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, people
generally retrieve their news from websites and applications on these devices of which there are
plenty. Therefore, if coverage of a McCarthy type politician were produced today, it would not
be as much of a burden on each journalist because the stakes would not be as high, as there are
other outlets providing similar content. However, many of today s news channels have deviated
away from the principles of journalism, which emphasize reporting the truth and not repressing
any information. In the media and television today, there is a large emphasis on advertising and
image. Many companies select news to report based on what would help to improve their
reputation and generate more profit by catering to advertisers. If the McCarthy controversy were
to happen today, news channels would report on it, but in a way that would not jeopardize
themselves. It is also likely that they would skew the news to cater to the views of their audience
and advertisers. Thus, reporters would also most likely not make statements as bold as Murrow as
they would fear McCarthy potentially destroying their

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Role Play Activity
The Role Play Activity
The Role Play Activity could be the best way to stimulate conversation. By this activity, 1st year
EFL learners can learn new vocabulary, words statements and know how to use them in its correct
context by asking to perform dialogues, negotiate with your partner on an item such as computer or
large piece of furniture, and discuss things such as warranty that are found in (ESLGold, 2010).
This activity will help them to know the right place of each discourse and give them an
opportunity to practice it well, improve the FL and create a relaxed area while sharing ideas. As
Livingstone said, The role play is a classroom activity, which gives the student the opportunity to

In simulations, 1st year EFL learners could bring items to the class to create a realistic
environment. For instance, if a learner is acting as a singer, she brings a microphone to sing and
so on. Role plays and simulations have many advantages. First, since they are entertaining, they
motivate the learners. Second, as Harmer (2001, p. 275) suggests, they increase the self confidence
of hesitant learners, because in role play and simulation activities, they will have a different role
and do not have to speak for themselves.
Storytelling
First year EFL Learners could create their own stories to tell their classmates or summarize a tale
or story they heard from somebody else. Story telling could help learners developing creative
thinking and to know how to develop ideas from introduction, body, and then conclusion without
forgetting to include the characters and the setting. Learners also can tell riddles or jokes. For
instance, at the beginning of each class, the teacher should call few learners to tell short riddles or
jokes as an opening. In this way, he will not only address their speaking ability but getting the
attention of the class.

The Black And Colored People
The problem in the communities of the black and colored people in America is there need to
feel equal to their dominator. What happens with the black and colored people is they succumb
to lower levels than they are worth and capable of to appease the problem. For example during
the separate but equal era black business were booming, Black Wall Street was thriving, and
black children were just as smart if not smarter than their other counter parts. Not by choice but
because they had to be in order to compete the same is true today but less so. Their education was
not monitored and didn t have to be white washed because it was ran by the people that looked
and lived like them. During desegregation the life of American African people changed forever, in
some ways for better and other ways for the worse.
Integration was the turning point in the wrong direction for black people in my opinion. This was
the start of internalized colonization done by European Americans. The American Africans have
become assimilated and very docile or overconformity as Ruth Caven would say, to European
culture. In doing this some black leaders will go out of their way not to step on the toes of
European Americans because they feel a closeness and familiarity. This feeling of closeness
hinders the ability to call them on the carpet for slavery, segregation, and all the other crimes up to
date. In beating around the bush the problem cannot be addressed in any way shape or form. Not

A leopard will kill its prey with one swift bite to the neck, breaking it. The largest of the leopards
is about five feet in length, with its tail adding another 3 feet and over 200 pounds. It can range
from a dark golden to a light cream color. There are also melanistic coats, which are all black,
sometimes called Black Panthers. All leopards have the dark rosette pattern, spots on their coats,
although they are not visible on the black coats. The males are generally 20 to 40 percent larger
than the females. On average, each liter will produce two cubs, each weighing only one and a
half to two pounds. The cubs remain with their mother for 18 to 24 months. There are over 20
subspecies in the leopard group and each one is slightly different than the others. They are
excellent climbers and can drag prey that is three times their weight up into a tree to keep it safe
from scavengers and other hunters. They are often found hunting nocturnally, and hiding in the
brush during the hot afternoons. They can hunt in places with nearly no light because of their
circular pupil which is capable of vast dilation. They also have a superb sense of smell and the
ability to detect movement.People usually think of leopards in the savannas of Africa but in the
Russian Far East, a rare subspecies has adapted to life in th e temperate forests that make up the
northern most part of the species range. Similar to other leopards,

Sociological Explanations Of Gender Differences
Sex is categorized on biological grounds for example male and female and it is as a result of nature
while gender elaborates sex on social grounds. (West and Zimmerman 1987) define gender as
something people learn to do through social pressure and one is not born with it.it is learned over
a period of time . A person s sex does not necessarily correspond with his or her genderand hence
division into various gender categories for example transgender, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals,
intersex and gender queer. Gender categories are created when a male or a femaledo not match with
their specific sex roles in the society. Human sex differences in humans are between males and
females and they are determined by presence or absence of Y chromosomes.... Show more content

Even in adults, some of their voice pith cannot be classified. People are also learning on how to

doing jobs considered to be done by women and women are entering in male dominated fields. This
has brought about people being comfortable being in the position of the other sex.
In separation of sexes, boys play with boys and girls with other girls from a very young age. This
makes them become comfortable with each other and hence room for gender a category that is
gayism or lesbianism. Human sexes by developing desires, they then make themselves desirable by
those in the other sex .they do this by making themselves physically attractive. People looking for a
lesbian or gay relationship specify that candidates should be in the same gender category as
theirs.(Livia 2002). Through convention people do learn to do things they want without having a
legit reason behind their decision. This gives liberty to act in whatever manner they wish to and
hence defining their gender.
As years pass by, the society does change and some of the gender categories gain importance while
some loose importance. Also the way they are looked at from our different institutions for example

Dollar General Industry Analysis
MEMORANDUM To: From: Date: Re: Dollar General Industry Analysis Executive Summary:
Dollar General is the sixth largest mass merchandiser, and the fourth largest discount store in the
U.S. However, significant growth opportunities remain for extreme value retailers such as Dollar
General. Dollar General s strategic objective is sustainable and profitable long term growth. The
company has opportunities for growth by expanding in the United States to areas that lack an
extreme value retail presence. Continuing to serve low , middle , and fixed income families in
small communities will prevent Dollar General from competing directly against mass retailers such
as Wal Mart and Target. Dollar General s strength... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dollar store industry caters to low , middle , and fixed income buyers who are price
sensitive. Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the best bargain for an item that they
will need to purchase again in the near future. The high threat of customer buying power drives
profitability down. In contrast to buyer power, supplier power is low. This is due to the large
number of suppliers that offer price competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on
the retail industry to sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of
supplier power increases profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. Since extreme value
retailers offer a focused assortment of goods in a small box format, mass retailers such as Wal
Mart and Target are substitutes rather than competitors. On one hand, mass retailers have a larger
assortment of branded goods, economies of scale, and are highly price competitive with extreme
value retailers. On the other hand, extreme value retailers are more convenient due to the small
box format, allowing a customer to get in and out quickly. The products being sold are
undifferentiated so price performance tradeoff is low. The threat of new entrants into the industry
is medium. There are areas of the U.S. with no extreme retail presence, making it easier for a new
entrant to open and capture market share. On the demand side,

Isaiah s Immanuel, Dr. Edward Hindson
In Isaiah s Immanuel, Dr. Edward Hindson truly dives into the book of Isaiah. Hindson helps us
to grasp the importance and statute of Isaiah. He was not simply a prophet among prophets. He
stands out as a citizen of Israel and a servant of God. Hindson does not hold back on his praises of
Isaiah and agrees with W.R.Smith, that he is the second most important person throughout the
whole story of Israel (2). Isaiahs writings style still puts modern day scholars in awe. However,
Isaiah s Godly leadership is a principle throughout the book that far exceeds his other attributes. His
wisdom, words, and visions from God guided the nation of Israel throughout the reign of Jotham,
Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Hindon discusses the history of not only Isaiah... Show more content on

This idea stems from perceiving the prophecies of Isaiah as immediate in his day. Scholars from
Barnes in 1840 to Archer in 1962 agree that there had to be an objective to the words Isaiah had
for Ahaz (23). They argue that the woman in the passage was a virgin until she conceived a child
with another man. Hindson and others such as Ramm point out a conceptual flaw in the
hermeneutics of dual fulfillment. A prophecy cannot have multiple meanings just to fit the ideas of
the reader. A proper hermeneutical involves the concept of word study which Hindson carefully
looks at. There is significance in Isaiah s use of words such as therefore, sign, behold, and many
other words in the passage. Digging into the words and the context surrounding them, Hindson
reveals that there is a great amount of evidence that points to the woman in the passage being a
virgin who is still a virgin even after becoming pregnant with child (44).
Still, the most significant part of the verse is the declaration of the name of the child Immanuel
meaning God with us. Some choose to believe all mentionings of names referring to God were
reminders from God and the people he had a message for at a certain time and place (46). Yet
again, with proper hermeneutics it is clear that the sign is directed to a plural people, not Ahaz.
The sign was to the house of David, is mentioned in verse thirteen. The sign was a coming Messiah
which is a reoccurring theme in Hindon s book. Although

  • 2. The Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem Tropical rainforests contains the most diverse ecosystems of any biome, containing over half of the world s flora and fauna species despite only covering less than 6% of the earth s surface. Ecosystems have flourished here because of plentiful rainfall (over 100mm per year) a humid but consistent temperature (http://www.blue planetbiomes.org/rainforest.htm). All this combines to something of a nightmare to live in, especially for someone who has never experienced it before. So whether your plane has crash landed into the Amazon or you were stupid enough to follow iMaps when you told it to take you to the local McDonalds, this guide will instruct you to survive in a tropical rainforest. Water You might think this one is easy, you re carrying a drink bottle with you! But that bottle isn t going to last more than two days in this humid environment, and you re not going to make it out in that time. Tropical Rainforests contain water sources that can be found in the form of streams or lakes or even tiny water vines. One tip into finding a lake or stream is look for a place where shorter, fern plants flourish, and not much tall trees are found. If a water source cannot be found, rainwater is more than enough to keep you alive. Remember before consuming any water, to boil it over a fire (see Fire ) so that any bacteria is killed off. • 3. Soft Media And Soft News Media Essay Just how influential are soft news outlets in informing the american people? I approached this topic with an interest in the answer because soft news media is one of the early ways that I was introduced to politics. It is through this medium of media that I have seen many people increase their political participation. There have been some studies in this topic but I want to see how prevalent these studies are to today s soft news media. One of the more useful resources that I had while writing this paper is that of Matthew A. Baum. He has written many studies regarding soft newsin the media throughout the years. I believe that soft news outlets are a great way for the politically uninformed to become better informed rather than watching the more hard news outlets. What does the term soft news actually mean? Well one great way of defining it is as a style and genre that blurs the line between information and entertainment. (Lisa Mills Brown 2014) A few examples of some of the more well known soft news programs are The Daily Show and The Tonight Show hosted by a variety of anchors. In my opinion, what makes these shows so popular is how each show is able to combine jokes and lighthearted humor to news that would otherwise be serious. Accordingly, many people probably feel the same way. By moving away from the more traditional hard news, people are probably looking more towards soft news media as a way to get their daily political news. With a variety of different ... Birth Weight Variability CRE # 4: Birth Weight and Language Development The study Birth Weight Variability and Language Development: Risk, Resilience, and Responsive Parenting by Sheri Madigan, Mark Wade, Andre Plamondon, Dillon Browne, and Jennifer Jenkins, published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, discussed birth weight and language development and language abilities. The study briefly summarized the objective of the research, previous research, then went into the current research study discussing the methods, results, and discussion/limitations. The current research aimed to examine whether normal ranges of birth weight variation were associated with the development of language ability at 36 months of age and whether the protective factor of responsive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More specifically, the study gave a great overview of how birth weight is positively associated with differences of language ability in children at 36 months. From a critical assessment standpoint, this study did a great job of assessing the relationship between birth weight and developmental delay regarding language development and ability. Clearly, the information and research were accurate but it was presented in an engaging way through research methods and the discussion section. My only criticism of the study was the longitudinal design, which caused attrition and also measured different things at different time points. By this, I mean that I personally think that it would have been more beneficial to have consistent measures across all time points to more adequately and accurately compare all facets being studied (i.e., maternal behavior and children s receptive language using the PPVT). However, this limitation was noted by the researchers and suggested to future longitudinal studies examining the impacts of low birth weight on language abilities. The study sparked my interest in how parents can help to facilitate language development, as the article mentioned that postnatal factors, such as responsive parenting, can help buffer risks for children who were born with low birth weight. This involves a matter of resiliency and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Odysseus is remembered of his great conquest when he is on the land of the Phaiakians where Demodokos sings of his conquest. The singer had reminded Odysseus of one of his great achievements that was part of his identity. Caravaggio forces Almasy to remember most of his past right before the crash when he starts to ask questions. When you crashed in the desert where were you flying from (Ondaatje pg 167). Almasy had already remembered that he was once in the Gilf Kebir and what he was doing there but now he had to remember why he was back there again. I had gone there to collect someone. DBQ on Han and Roman attitudes toward technology The Han dynasty and Roman empire lasted through periods of enlightenment where new ideas and concepts were brought up. Although in slightly different time periods, the Han and Romans both experienced an influx of new technology that changed their ways of life. The Han s attitude toward technology and labor was very open and optimistic. On the other hand, the Roman attitude towards technology and labor was relatively more strict and they didn t really see technology as something enlightened . The Han Dynasty viewed technology as essential in various ways. Documents 1 and 2 show how technology is an essential thing and that although it is great, government intervening must take place to assure everything goes to plan. Document 1 mentions some organization and order that s needed to make sure everything works, and document 2 mentions how the workers are using crude brittle tools and need to get new tools that are in good condition so they can work more efficiently. • 12. The Harm Caused by Bioterrorism Micro/Diseases Bioterrorism Bioterrorism is purposefully releasing biological agent toxins to cause harm and terrorize people. Bioterrorism was first thought of somewhere in the 1340 s, this was when diseased horse corpses were catapulted over castle walls in France. Germ warfare was also used in the medieval times in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; human bodies were infected with the plague and used as ammunition in central Europe. During World War I Germany had attempted to infect the Allies using anthrax through livestock, which they failed in doing. By Germany attempting this it caused for Geneva Protocol, this is the restriction of chemical and biological weapons being used during war. However, the first bioterrorismoccurred in the 1984 in the United States, members of the cult ha sprinkled salmonella on salad bars around Wasco County. • 13. Analysis Of The Kite Runner The Kite Runner Essay No one is born evil, the environment in which one is raised influences what kind of person they will be. The Kite Runner, a historical fiction novel written by Khaled Hoesseni, follows a young Afghani boy named Amir. Amir makes some regrettable decisions in his youth and the guilt haunts him throughout his life as he searches for a way to redeem himself. Amir also grew up with his friend/servant named Hassan. Hassan is a Hazara boy that lived in the mud shack behind Amir s house. Amir is a very selfish and cowardly character, but he was not born with these character traits, some factors can be attributed to Amir s selfishness or cowardice. Baba, Amir s father, would always treat Hassan with the same amount of love and respect as he would Amir, if not more. This angered Amir as he wanted Baba all to himself. In addition, Amir is somewhat of a shy person that likes to keep his thoughts and emotions bottled up inside, which is not positive for anyone. Finally, the juristic difference in social classes in Afghanistanthat separate Amir and Hassan also contribute to Amir s cowardice. Amir s upbringing and the society he lived in directly attribute to Amir s cowardice. Baba treated Hassan as if he were his own child and this proves to be harmful to Amir. During the winters in Kabul kite running was a staple activity and a family tradition for most. The tradition is no different with Amir, every year he would fly kites with Hassan and Baba. • 14. Writing Challenges In Overcoming A Fear Of Writing You want a question that brings the reader inside! You want a question to excite the readers, and pull them inwards, so they can connect to the story when you re writing! When you are writing, you must pull the reader in! They must know what s next! However big or small, everyone has experienced challenges in life. A long time ago, a friend of mine once told me that to overcome a challenge; you need to embrace the problem instead of rejecting it. Now I realize what she was trying to say. When you have a problem, don t run away from it, because then you will never learn how to rise above it. This is especially true in overcoming a fear of writing. Overcoming a fear of writing is hard if it starts in kindergarten. I had the most beautiful handwriting in class. I had received many complements from my teachers for the writing workbook assignments. But I really never liked to write. I did not like writing at all! I had tried by best to be happy but it did not work well. When I wrote, I thought moodily, this is boring. When I wrote, I felt angry because I couldn t spell all the words right. I did not know what to say or write down, and this caused me more frustration. After writing, my hands would feel tired. There was no happiness in writing for me, so decided to just give up. Whenever I was forced to write for my portfolios by hand, I would always complain, trying to wiggle myself out of it. I would do preposterous things: I would whine, be very angry, frustrated, ... Although every person and item must be screened before entering each sterile area, it is the manner in which the screening is conducted that is most important. Possessing that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like and dislike in politics. The topic I will be exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it effects their viewers. This is an important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that uses mass mediato disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes in to picking the news stories covered. Love has many different seasons to it, and can be expressed in many different ways. There is a theory that gives every type of love a meaning. For every person love can mean something different. Analysis Of Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway A key belief within our society is that there are many sides to any story, and to gain full understanding, one more confront and engage with all aspects. There are instances, however, when the scope of the story makes the full truth unattainable. This is the case of World War I. The Great War was nearly impossible to understand while it was taking place, and although nearly one hundred years have passed, little concrete clarity has been achieved regarding the overall truths and experiences of this war. Claire Tylee, a historian who focuses on the woman s role in World War I, highlights the ineffable aspect of the war even for the most skilled authors, saying that: reviewing a novel in 1917, Virginia Woolfsuggested that the War was... This was a war that touched every aspect of human life, even diluting something as pure as love. These divisions don t end with the war s last shot: they continue into the following years... (Hynes, 337). The Great War created a new kind of love story, thus reflecting the truths and lasting impacts on all corners of society. After this war, the previous perception of love was no longer attainable, as each individual lived in the harsh reality brought upon by extreme isolation of experience. The climate upon returning home can be understood by observing the strain in even the closest relationships, thus showing the isolation endured within society. Since Septimus and Rezia met during wartime, their relationship fit within the context of chaos, so when placed in a quiet city, the relationship that they had built crumbled. This partially was due to inconsistency in experience, as it was impossible to understand what someone else had gone through. When DNA tests become invalidated, the test can no longer be relied on to be accurate. Forensics relies on the total accuracy of their test. When a test s accuracy cannot be verified, it cannot be used as evidence. With all of the data that laboratories have to process, how can the accuracy of the data be checked? In 2009, there were an estimated 26 million Child ID Kits distributed by the National Child Identification Program alone. Prior to the launching of the World Wide Web in 1993 which changed the setting of gambling, people had to travel great distances to gamble. The world s first virtual online casino, Internet Casinos, Inc. (ICI) commenced operation on August 18, 1995 with 18 different casino games. This so far seems to be the best solution, however ethical and moral dilemmas still rest in the hands of our lawmakers today. The next issue facing internet gambling is taxes. This seems to be the government s biggest issue. This is because of the billions of dollars we mentioned for profit by these online sites, government can gain significant amount of money from it. The legalization of Internet gambling may cause states to lose some revenue generated from legalized gambling operations because many gamblers would spend their money online (Lassani, 1998). Moreover, states lose revenue by not being able to tax gamblers who win over the Internet. Gamblers who win over the Internet have an incentive not to pay taxes on their winnings because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) lacks the resources to track online gamblers (Lassani, 1998). The likelihood of addiction to Internet gambling among both children and adults is an extremely important concern. In relation to addiction, children are more likely to become addicted to something new than adults (Smith, 2004). For example, the video game like nature of virtual casinos, labeled the crack cocaine of gambling, could make online gambling a temptation difficult to resist. Furthermore, the fact that the Internet gambler need not leave the comfort and privacy of his or her home could mean that an individual might become easily addicted. This is the worst ... • 23. The Importance Of The English Language CHAPTER I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.0. Introduction All over the world, language is a very important tool of communication. It is used in everyday life because of the need for communication options or expressing feelings. Successful communication must involve a speaker and a listener (interlocutor) who both understand the language being used. To make sure that a language is known, it implies proficiency in the four language skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading. According to Gary Rybold (2006:16 17), we can improve several critical thinking skills by studying debate: Debate will help you to become a better writter. Once you complete your research, you must be able to write speeches or briefs, short organized arguments that helps you to understand and explain your viewpoint. He continues by saying: Debate will help you to become better listeners. When members of the other team are speaking, you must listen to what they say so that you can respond. In many debates, you will have a partner. You will have to listen to him or her carefully in order to advance your side. You will become a critical listener which means that you will think what is being said. When taking in consideration the importance of the English Language nowadays in the world, none can refuse that it has become the dominant language of the present historical era, that is, an international language with regards to the large number of people who use it as a tool of communication. But actually, consumers have limited choices only because many of them are owned by Time Warner and they may consist of similar ideologies of the institution. For example, a film produced by the studio of Time Warner is commented from the public in both positive and negative sides. the editor or even the executive of the magazines of the Time Warner would concern the interests of the Time Warner. However, the help that the Hawaiians received led to them being demoralized and hurt psychologically and physiologically. In order to succeed, underdogs often need the assistance of others. Holden is easily aggravated by any impression of phoniness and he realizes that all adults exhibit pretentious qualities. As a result, he tries to protect all children, the only innocent beings in his life, from being exposed to phoniness. However, growing up and losing innocence are not preventable, thus causing him to exhaust himself through his useless efforts. Holden s dislike towards phoniness and hypocrisy in the adult world leads him to try and protect the innocence in younger generations and ultimately leaves him disappointed in his inevitable failure to do so. Holden often addresses his hostility toward phoniness in the adult world because he does not understand why adults find the need to misrepresent themselves or their feelings. • 28. The Effects Of Tylenol Products On The Economy According to Lewis (2006), crisis is an interruption from previously normal state of functioning resulting in turmoil, instability, and a significant upheaval to a system (p. 27). In other words, a crisis is a negative predictable or unpredictable event that affects the future trend of individuals, groups, organizations, and government. For instance, pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson had an unpredictable crisis in 1982 with its product Tylenol, which was laced with cyanide and led to several murders in Chicago. The events of this crisis could have changed the perception of Tylenol products. Another example of organizational crisis was the predictable 2012 Hurricane Sandy. Although companies of all sizes expected the Hurricane due to the weather forecasting, some areas in New York and New Jersey were affected worse than others. There were businesses that terminated operations for several business days. In addition to Hurricane Sandy being an organizational crisis, it was also a crisis for many families that lost power in their homes and a crisis for government departments such as FEMA (Federal Emergency ManagementAgency), and other agencies within local and state governments. Anxiety (or stress) should not be mistaken for a crisis. To remember an event we need to get information into our brain which is encoding, store the information and then be able to retrieve it. The three stage processing model of Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin suggests that we record information that we want to remember first as a fleeting sensory memoryand then it is processed into a short term memory bin where we encode it ( pay attention to encode important or novel stimuli) for long term memory and later retrieval. The premise for the three step process is that we are unable to focus on too much... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The amount remembered depends on the time spent learning. Even after we learn material/names, additional rehearsal increases retention. For novel verbal information, practice effortful processing does indeed improve our memory. We also retain information better when our rehearsal is distributed over a period of time, known as spacing effect. People who have experienced serial position effect strengthen the benefits of rehearsal. When shown a list of words/names and then immediately asked to recall the items in any order, they struggle to recall the list. They remember of the first and last words/names better than those in the middle. This is probably due to the fact that the last names/ items are still in short term memory; people briefly recall them especially quickly and well. But after a delay, after they shift their attention from the last names/items their recall is best for the first names/items. We must remember that our memory system processes information not just by repetitive rehearsal but also by encoding its significant features. Strategies and devices that help us remember information that requires effortful processing are: encoding its meaning, visualizing, and mentally organizing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most widespread approaches of this history are that of violence, war, oppression, possession of territories, and foundation of new colonies. In Frontier of Possessions, Tamar Herzog, a historian, professor of Latin American presents an account of the conquest from a different perspective, one that proposes that the acquisition of the territory of the New World by Spainand Portugalwas a result of interactions of many actors that caused territorial division in both Iberia and the Americas(Herzog, 6). And focus at history that look at the information, in a thematically agreement with specific actors, and arguments, rather that in sequence, and progression in particular place. From the above mentioned, when analyzing the territorial division in the Americas is necessary to ponder why the treaties failed? Was not the Tordecillas treaty, which gave the right to conquest and posses the New World, enough? This question is very important, and Herzog explores it: the treaty of Tordecillas did not specify a geographical division; European couldn t agree, and trust their science or modernization. This contradictory approach is important in the narrative of Frontiers of Possessions; Herzog presents an opposed view to narrative about the modernity of the Europeans conquerors. It is ironic to think about modernization, conquest, and possessions of lands when European couldn t trust their own modernity, and yet used it as a justifiable reason to posses. This comes to show that these groups of people were common people that possibly did not understood or even care about modernity, but rather possession through different means. As an illustration, Herzog points out that Spaniard and Portuguese did not bother about linear or zonal classification of the land. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Social And Cultural Context Of Psychology Katja Gavrilina Define the term Psychology and discuss its history in light of social and cultural context, highlighting the significance of different perspectives in Psychology. Psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes and human behaviour. It had roots in philosophy and physiology, before becoming an independent scientific discipline in the late 1800 s. Descartes (1641) suggested that the mind and the body work separately, together creating the human experience (Mastin L. 2008). This idea of so called dualism shaped a number of on going discussions in modern psychology, such as the nature nurture debate. In 1879 the first experimental laboratory was founded by Wilhelm Wundt, in Leipzig, Germany. This fundamental moment is referred to as the birth of Psychology. Until the 1900 s psychologists mainly studied the conscious human experience. Sigmund Freud, Austrian physician, caused a ground breaking shift in this field (1890 s 1930 s). He brought special importance to the unconscious mind, arguing that early childhood experiences and unconscious urges shape our adult personality. He emphasized the importance of sex and stages of early development. Contributing psychoanalysis in the 20th century, Freud had an enormous impact on the field of Psychology. His theory is unscientific and based on his individual cases, which makes it hard to generalize his assumptions. Freud s work was also criticized by feminist Karen Horney, ... With the development of other forms of media such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, people generally retrieve their news from websites and applications on these devices of which there are plenty. Therefore, if coverage of a McCarthy type politician were produced today, it would not be as much of a burden on each journalist because the stakes would not be as high, as there are other outlets providing similar content. However, many of today s news channels have deviated away from the principles of journalism, which emphasize reporting the truth and not repressing any information. In the media and television today, there is a large emphasis on advertising and image. Many companies select news to report based on what would help to improve their reputation and generate more profit by catering to advertisers. Integration was the turning point in the wrong direction for black people in my opinion. This was the start of internalized colonization done by European Americans. The American Africans have become assimilated and very docile or overconformity as Ruth Caven would say, to European culture. In doing this some black leaders will go out of their way not to step on the toes of European Americans because they feel a closeness and familiarity. This is due to the large number of suppliers that offer price competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. • 51. Isaiah s Immanuel, Dr. Edward Hindson In Isaiah s Immanuel, Dr. Edward Hindson truly dives into the book of Isaiah. Hindson helps us to grasp the importance and statute of Isaiah. He was not simply a prophet among prophets. He stands out as a citizen of Israel and a servant of God. Hindson does not hold back on his praises of Isaiah and agrees with W.R.Smith, that he is the second most important person throughout the whole story of Israel (2). Isaiahs writings style still puts modern day scholars in awe. However, Isaiah s Godly leadership is a principle throughout the book that far exceeds his other attributes. His wisdom, words, and visions from God guided the nation of Israel throughout the reign of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Hindon discusses the history of not only Isaiah... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea stems from perceiving the prophecies of Isaiah as immediate in his day. Scholars from Barnes in 1840 to Archer in 1962 agree that there had to be an objective to the words Isaiah had for Ahaz (23). They argue that the woman in the passage was a virgin until she conceived a child with another man. Hindson and others such as Ramm point out a conceptual flaw in the hermeneutics of dual fulfillment. A prophecy cannot have multiple meanings just to fit the ideas of the reader. A proper hermeneutical involves the concept of word study which Hindson carefully looks at. There is significance in Isaiah s use of words such as therefore, sign, behold, and many other words in the passage. Digging into the words and the context surrounding them, Hindson reveals that there is a great amount of evidence that points to the woman in the passage being a virgin who is still a virgin even after becoming pregnant with child (44). Still, the most significant part of the verse is the declaration of the name of the child Immanuel meaning God with us. Some choose to believe all mentionings of names referring to God were reminders from God and the people he had a message for at a certain time and place (46). Yet again, with proper hermeneutics it is clear that the sign is directed to a plural people, not Ahaz. The sign was to the house of David, is mentioned in verse thirteen. The sign was a coming Messiah which is a reoccurring theme in Hindon s book. Although ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
