Fatty acid synthesis occurs in the cytosol and involves the carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA using bicarbonate, ATP, and the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase). ACCase and carnitine acyltransferase are allosterically regulated to control fatty acid synthesis. Further processing of fatty acids includes desaturation and elongation.
