LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE
LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FINAL PRODUCT?
Comparison
Masthead – The use of font style and sizing has made a dramatic difference in this
comparison. The font is shows more of a focus to my audience style and age
whereas the previous masthead was done for my preference
Imagery – the first task was a typical mid shot with no focus on aspects of mise-en-
scene. The first was very simple in clothes with no real focus on target audience
styles. Also the lighting and setting is quite adequate and lacks a lot of detail. My
final product shows more of a focus in style and how this represents the audience as
a social group. A lot of though has gone in to the music style as well as the age and
class of the target audience. As well as this, the lighting was more controlled because
of the studio setting which added more emphasis on features and elements of
clothing. The lighting hits the models face which makes her features a lot nicer and a
focal point – the previous task included natural lighting which didn’t hit the face
properly and hides these features that are meant to be emphasized. The long shot
also shows more of the character and their personality from their clothing and
positioning, whereas the previous also doesn’t do this.
Cover lines – With the first task, I didn’t understand how cover lines were meant to
be presented and so they were listed. In comparison, my final product contains more
cover lines which are evenly distributed around the page and character. This looks
more like a conventional magazine and also it looks a lot more engaging visually. The
use of different font also allowed me to engage the readers and differentiate each
cover line in comparison to the standard first task font that wasn’t unique or
appealing. I notice that the length of cover lines also makes a difference and
influences how the reader sees the magazine. Shorter and sharper lines seem more
dramatic and abrupt, yet get the points across whilst still motivating the audience to
read on. The longer lines are less interesting and don’t entice the audience.
Preliminary Contents Sheet
After looking at colour schemes, style and a focus on the
audience, my final product looks completely different to my first
draft.
The first draft represents a lack of focus towards the audience and
that the lack of content doesn’t help in identifying the style or
genre of magazine. The design is very simplistic and basic, and
doesn’t fully represent any relation to the audience. There is a
clear different in effect and appearance on my final product I
used less imagery and ultimately less spaced out font so that a
minimal style represented the theme of indie-alternative. The
colours of black and yellow link to rock and then the font and
graphic design links to the audience persona of individuality. My
final product is identifiable and represents who the audience are
and what the magazine is.
My editing skills have progressed from basic word documents to
InDesign and resulted in a more professional finish. InDesign
allowed me to access a better range of variation for font, colour
schemes and layout design, and so this has helped me progress
from my initial task to the finished product.
Use of Textual Analysis and other research to
help make my final product.
Looking at current magazines in my textual analysis of lead to me to produce magazines that
look realistic and effective. They manage to grasp the audiences attention by using interesting
images, cover lines, font sizes and styles and layouts.
The textual analysis also made me understand the representations of particular social groups
and how these are constructed within the magazine style. Using certain imagery such as
studio and live shots have allowed me to develop my magazine’s content and make it look
appealing to the target audience.
Looking back at my preliminary task, the lack of research, just through the layout is
obvious, and it lacks any visual appeal in comparison to what my final product looks
like. The task didn’t include any features other than a masthead and writing which
didn’t make the magazine seem interesting and worth reading. By using ‘defont’ and
incorporating that in to my magazine has made my writing more related to the style
of magazine and appealing to the audience.
Visual showing of my use of research as
layout development
Showing of contents development using the
ideas of conforming to young adult social group
representations
Helped me understand the
importance of house colours and what
would appeal to a younger target
audience. I wanted to use this as
inspiration to represent this on my
page. The colour of yellow really
interested me and made me think
about gender stereotypes – the colour
is unbiased and can work for either
gender.
Using all these things has helped me
progress my preliminary task. My
magazine is more professional and
modern and incorporates relevant and
new technology like InDesign to
create this page in relation to my
research.
Showing of double page spread development using
typical double page spread layouts
I used this as a base for a minimal
theme and a focus on how a typical
layout would be. I used picture being on
wide side with a balanced text on the
other to make it easier for the audience
to read and make it visually look like it
makes sense.
Photoshop allowed me to put a Hue on
the image in order to add a pink hint
which links with the font in the text.
InDesign helped me to form the entire
page and make it look realistic. The use
of columns and colour variations has
helped me progress from my basic
design of the contents sheet and cover
page I first did.
Photoshop Skills I have developed
 Using Hue in order to adjust the colouration of the
image. This is so it adds a persona to the page and
emphasises the style of the artist.
 This has progressed into my final product because
of the differentiation from media conventions.
 Also using techniques like Brightness/Contrast adds
more effect the to images and creates a more
detailed and sharpened appearance to the image.
It gives more focus on certain features like makeup
and facial features. The lighting can easily be
corrected using this technique which has helped
the development in my imagery.
By improving my researching and
organisational skills, I was able to find out
details of my audience that helped in my
magazine production.
Researching - for example, by asking about
particular bands and artists of interests, this
made me think about how I could
incorporate these styles into my magazine.
One interviewee says that she likes Lily
Allen whilst the other says that he likes
Slipknot. By incorporating black pages, this
links to Slipknot and their style, and the
quirky graphic art links to Lily Allen and her
songs that are unique and different.
Using interviews and surveys has
allowed me to understand my
audience needs and how this can be
fulfilled within my magazine style.
Photography planning helped
me to get the best out of my
shoots through using a studio
and certain live shots. It made me
think about the atmosphere and
character representation to be
the ideology for the targeted
social groups and audiences.
Drafts also helped me to progress
Developing my drafts has also been
key for me to develop my magazine
to the final product. I learnt what
worked for my audience and
magazine style, and I was able to
identify what looked right in terms
of placement from typical magazine
conventions influences.
I found this really helped me figure
out how my magazine should look
and be to get my final product
looking the best it can when linking
to my audience and genre.
Overall
 Overall my final product has developed massively in
comparison to my preliminary tasks. Using different
technologies, research and planning has helped me to
understand who my magazine is aimed at, what the
design should look like in relation to these
representations and finding out what works and what
doesn’t for my magazine. Looking at all these aspects
including the skills I have learnt from Photoshop and
InDesign has helped me to make my magazine look
professional and realistic which distributors would be
likely to publish.
 My work has progressed from the simplest to the
better form and I think my work represents my
audience and genre clearly and well.

The lighting hits the models face which makes her features a lot nicer and a focal point – the previous task included natural lighting which didn’t hit the face properly and hides these features that are meant to be emphasized. The long shot also shows more of the character and their personality from their clothing and positioning, whereas the previous also doesn’t do this. Cover lines – With the first task, I didn’t understand how cover lines were meant to be presented and so they were listed. In comparison, my final product contains more cover lines which are evenly distributed around the page and character. This looks more like a conventional magazine and also it looks a lot more engaging visually. The use of different font also allowed me to engage the readers and differentiate each cover line in comparison to the standard first task font that wasn’t unique or appealing. I notice that the length of cover lines also makes a difference and influences how the reader sees the magazine. Shorter and sharper lines seem more dramatic and abrupt, yet get the points across whilst still motivating the audience to read on. The longer lines are less interesting and don’t entice the audience.
  • 3. Preliminary Contents Sheet After looking at colour schemes, style and a focus on the audience, my final product looks completely different to my first draft. The first draft represents a lack of focus towards the audience and that the lack of content doesn’t help in identifying the style or genre of magazine. The design is very simplistic and basic, and doesn’t fully represent any relation to the audience. There is a clear different in effect and appearance on my final product I used less imagery and ultimately less spaced out font so that a minimal style represented the theme of indie-alternative. The colours of black and yellow link to rock and then the font and graphic design links to the audience persona of individuality. My final product is identifiable and represents who the audience are and what the magazine is. My editing skills have progressed from basic word documents to InDesign and resulted in a more professional finish. InDesign allowed me to access a better range of variation for font, colour schemes and layout design, and so this has helped me progress from my initial task to the finished product.
  • 4. Use of Textual Analysis and other research to help make my final product. Looking at current magazines in my textual analysis of lead to me to produce magazines that look realistic and effective. They manage to grasp the audiences attention by using interesting images, cover lines, font sizes and styles and layouts. The textual analysis also made me understand the representations of particular social groups and how these are constructed within the magazine style. Using certain imagery such as studio and live shots have allowed me to develop my magazine’s content and make it look appealing to the target audience. Looking back at my preliminary task, the lack of research, just through the layout is obvious, and it lacks any visual appeal in comparison to what my final product looks like. The task didn’t include any features other than a masthead and writing which didn’t make the magazine seem interesting and worth reading. By using ‘defont’ and incorporating that in to my magazine has made my writing more related to the style of magazine and appealing to the audience.
  • 5. Visual showing of my use of research as layout development
  • 6. Showing of contents development using the ideas of conforming to young adult social group representations Helped me understand the importance of house colours and what would appeal to a younger target audience. I wanted to use this as inspiration to represent this on my page. The colour of yellow really interested me and made me think about gender stereotypes – the colour is unbiased and can work for either gender. Using all these things has helped me progress my preliminary task. My magazine is more professional and modern and incorporates relevant and new technology like InDesign to create this page in relation to my research.
  • 7. Showing of double page spread development using typical double page spread layouts I used this as a base for a minimal theme and a focus on how a typical layout would be. I used picture being on wide side with a balanced text on the other to make it easier for the audience to read and make it visually look like it makes sense. Photoshop allowed me to put a Hue on the image in order to add a pink hint which links with the font in the text. InDesign helped me to form the entire page and make it look realistic. The use of columns and colour variations has helped me progress from my basic design of the contents sheet and cover page I first did.
  • 8. Photoshop Skills I have developed  Using Hue in order to adjust the colouration of the image. This is so it adds a persona to the page and emphasises the style of the artist.  This has progressed into my final product because of the differentiation from media conventions.  Also using techniques like Brightness/Contrast adds more effect the to images and creates a more detailed and sharpened appearance to the image. It gives more focus on certain features like makeup and facial features. The lighting can easily be corrected using this technique which has helped the development in my imagery.
  • 9. By improving my researching and organisational skills, I was able to find out details of my audience that helped in my magazine production. Researching - for example, by asking about particular bands and artists of interests, this made me think about how I could incorporate these styles into my magazine. One interviewee says that she likes Lily Allen whilst the other says that he likes Slipknot. By incorporating black pages, this links to Slipknot and their style, and the quirky graphic art links to Lily Allen and her songs that are unique and different. Using interviews and surveys has allowed me to understand my audience needs and how this can be fulfilled within my magazine style. Photography planning helped me to get the best out of my shoots through using a studio and certain live shots. It made me think about the atmosphere and character representation to be the ideology for the targeted social groups and audiences.
  • 10. Drafts also helped me to progress Developing my drafts has also been key for me to develop my magazine to the final product. I learnt what worked for my audience and magazine style, and I was able to identify what looked right in terms of placement from typical magazine conventions influences. I found this really helped me figure out how my magazine should look and be to get my final product looking the best it can when linking to my audience and genre.
  • 11. Overall  Overall my final product has developed massively in comparison to my preliminary tasks. Using different technologies, research and planning has helped me to understand who my magazine is aimed at, what the design should look like in relation to these representations and finding out what works and what doesn’t for my magazine. Looking at all these aspects including the skills I have learnt from Photoshop and InDesign has helped me to make my magazine look professional and realistic which distributors would be likely to publish.  My work has progressed from the simplest to the better form and I think my work represents my audience and genre clearly and well.
