• HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
The photographs used may link to a more female
gender because of the use of a female model which
my market research suggested when answering my
surveys. However, this could also be a format for
appealing to the male gender by having a female
on the front cover. The pose may appeal to men
and may be an object of the ‘Male Gaze’
The live image represents both gender and isn’t
specific in who it is directed to.
The live shot in particular would link to a more youthful audience and would link to what age group I am
aiming at (18-25). The social experience of a live music event with intense lighting and large stages would
appeal to a young audience and could be a young adult representation or stereotype of this age group.
The style of a more minimal focus and
unique look through graphic designs
would link to a young adult audience.
Looking back at my market research,
one of the interviewees say that they
like classical music, and this style of
simplistic yet effective presentation
would link to this particular person,
and a large factor in the development
of my magazine. The font also links to
this style, and I wanted to incorporate
an alternative-indie rock theme by
introducing a colour scheme of yellow
and black. In my survey’s, black was
one of the main colours answered,
and so this became a large factor at
representing the correct social group
of the young yet mature age.
I think that the style also challenges the rock genre. In my pitch I
said that I wanted Offbeat to stay out of the trends and
differentiate itself in the developing music genre of indie-
alternative rock. I think this new style and approach to
conventional rock magazine is influenced from the developing
genre of alternative and indie. This style would seem to appeal to
the developing genre of today and appeal to a young audience
with an interest in this.
The writing style is easily read and modern. This would indicate a
focus in appealing to a young adult audience and makes it easier to
read. It looks mature and also links to the indie style of the
magazine.
The clothes worn represents a young and different look
which is becoming more popular in today’s society.
Fashion has become more individual with a less common
theme. This magazine’s model wears clothes that would
appeal to a typical income family and there is a focus on
middle class due to the good price and high quality of
the magazine, and the festival themes within.
The magazine may appeal to a certain ethnic groups such
as white British. I think that there is a
stereotype of white focus to the magazine in
relation to the font and look of the model.
