2. Target Audience
My target audience consists of male and female teenagers between the age
of 13-19. Although my primary target audience consists of females rather
than males. I aim to attract teenagers who are fans of pop music and it’s
culture, for example: teenagers who attend pop gigs/concerts. I think I
have successfully attracted my audience through research and using genre
conventions.
I used my research into stereotypes to attract my target audience. In
addition to this I added certain stereotypical pop elements into the
majority of aspects within my magazine. I done this through the use of
colour, make up, costume and hair. I decided to do this in order to ensure
the audience could relate and elaborate with the magazine and would be
attracted to it.
I used this research to decide on my models code of dress. I decided to
dress my model in a neutral jumper, light denim jeans and pink converse
trainers. I Also ensured that my model had light/blonde hair and was
wearing natural/pink toned make up products. Through creating this trendy
pop style on my model they will recognise and relate to this style.
3. Colour Scheme
The use of colour also contributed to attracting the target audience stereotypically, as pop music
is linked with bright and vibrant colours therefore I incorporated this link into my magazine colour
scheme. Different colours have different connation's and meanings behind them and I wanted to
relate the colours connation's to my genre, in order to help attract my target audience. Pink has
connotations that represent friendship, sweet, playfulness and charm. The colour pink symbolises
females as it is the most popular/common colour associated with this genre. In addition to this I
used the colour purple as it so also commonly known to be associated with females.
Then I used the colour blue to symbolise males as this colour is most commonly associated with
males. In addition to this I chose to use only one male gender specific colour compared to using
two female gender specific colours, because my primary target audience are female. Also I
wanted to put across that I will be supplying/ appealing more towards my primary
audience(females) as they are my main focus.
In addition to this my final main colour I chose to use was yellow as it is a unisex colour used to
enforce equality and balance. Also it is a very vibrant, bright and happy colour. Which will fit in
well with the genre of Pop, also it suggests all positive connotations, all aspects that I want to be
shown throughout my magazine.
This colour scheme allows the target audience to know this magazine is aimed at both genders. I
think it is important to think about the colours used when attracting an audience of both genders
as specific colours have different connotations. For example, I have not used dull colours as these
will be seen as boring to my target audience and wouldn’t stand out and grab the audiences
attention. This would also make my magazine look very negative and plain which is not the style
of magazine I want to create. Colour is important in catching the eye of the audience. For
example the colour yellow often stands out over other colour, so using yellow on my front cover
would make the magazine more noticeable.
4. Language and register
I used a specific language and register throughout my magazine in order to attract and
relate to my target audience continually. Through the majority of my magazine I used a
mixture of informal and formal language as my target audience consists of teenagers that
will most likely have advanced reading skills therefore they will understand more complex
words. However as most teenagers are known to be lazy and only tend to red magazines
as a element of entertainment and enjoyment, I mainly used informal language, with
simpler text and shorter sentences. Therefore it would take less effort and concentration
to understand the text. Also allowing the task of reading to be less time consuming as
teenagers have low concentration levels.
My article was written in an interview format as my target audience surveys results
confirmed that this form of text is preferred by my target audience then any other.
Therefore my article content consists of information the artist has proved me with
throughout our discussion, including her point of view on topics in which I the interviewer
has picked up on. In order to make my audience feel connected with the artist I used
frequent colloquialisms that relate to teenage culture, such as referring to the
interviewers as guys/yous.
Through the whole of magazine I created an upbeat tone through the use of exclamation
marks, short, catchy and snappy sentences. I decided to do this in order to provide the
information to my target audience so that they weren't left in the dark about anything,
yet brief content as the audience would get bored and lose concentration.
5. Language
I addressed my target audience by speaking to them directly, emphasising certain words
such as “you”- using the literature technique of emotive language as it is very personal
and meaningful. This will attract the audience as it makes them feel involved, e.g. like
a major aspect of the magazine. Also they will feel a sense of belonging when reading
the magazine, implying it will make them be inclined and continue to purchase the
magazine.
The use of direct mode of address in the images used also contributes to the readers
feeling involved. As the models were looking directly into the camera. The camera
acting as the audiences eye line suggesting there’s no barrier in-between reality and
fantasy. E.g. connecting the two together, the bigger picture connecting the audience
and the magazine company together.
I addressed the audience in a informal and friendly tone suggesting they would feel
relaxed and comfortable whilst reading my magazine, although I did keep the
professionally of the magazine. However I think using formal language can confuse
audiences and distance them from the magazine company, therefore that’s why I
decided not to use it. For example I use this type of formal language throughout my
editors note on my content page, e.g. ‘hey’ ‘for you’. In addition to this I signed the
end of my editors note using my forename as I thought this would contribute to the
personal, informal and friendly aspect of my magazine.
6. Features
I added a puff in the form of a competition into my magazine to attract my
target audience. I decide to create a competition to “Win a popstar
experience”, I used this type of puff as this opportunity would attract my
target audience as they enjoy pop music and aspire to be like one of the
stars.
I used words such as EXCLUSIVE to stand out on my front cover and make
the audience intrigued and want to find out more, suggesting the magazine
has lots more features inside and that they will be getting their moneys
worth. I decided to write these words in upper case and a different colour
to the background so that they would catch the audience eye and look
appealing.
7. Genre Conventions
Making the genre of the magazine clear to my target audience is an important step
as they need to establish the magazine is the genre they are attracted too and
enjoy listening too. Using genre conventions enabled me to make my magazine
resemble the typical pop music magazine style.
The general conventions were:
• Images
• Colours
• Fonts
• Costume/hair and make up
• Props
• Brand identity
These features are all conventions contributed to my magazine linking it to pop music
and allowing it to adapt to the style and image of a typical pop music magazine.
In addition to this I stayed with the same colour scheme throughout my magazine
to create brand identity. Doing this symbolises continuity of the magazine
suggesting everything included will be off relevance and suitability. Also this would
make my target audience associate these colours together to my magazine making
it more memorable and recognisable, which would lead to it being more noticeable
and successful due to popularity.
I researched into stereotypical pop style clothing, hair and makeup in order to
make my model have the style and look of a typical model/artist you would see in
a pop magazine.
8. Fonts and Props
Throughout my magazine I used a range of different fonts to empathise and bring
importance to certain words/ pieces of information. For example my masthead
was in a bold, solid and curled font to stand out suggesting that it’s of high
importance. This style of font would appeal to my target audience because it is
friendly, fun and trendy all characteristics my target audience desire to have. I
used different, simpler fonts throughout my magazine in order to imply different
things yet not take the attention away from the main focus of the magazine. Also
having different fonts keeps the audience interested as using versatile fonts keep
the magazine content upbeat and fun.
I did plan to interpret appropriate props linking to pop genre into some of my
images, however at the last minute I decided against this as I thought the
audience may bring their attention to the props and lack attention on the main
focus. Therefore this is why I didn’t use any props as I didn’t want any confusion
to the audience.
Also I included well known names of artists and names features in my magazine for
promotion reasons, as it would attract fans of the pop music fans if they hear
established and successful artists and musicians are linking with the magazine,
which is the audience I am aiming to appeal to.
9. Prices
I also researched into the price of existing magazines so I could decide on a
suitable and affordable price for my own magazine. This allowed me to
establish competition my own pop magazine would face if it was distributed.
Through my research I concluded that my current pop magazine price ranges
from £2:00-£4:00. In order to attract my target audience of teenagers-young
adults I made my magazine cheaper than most competitors at £3:00. This is a
suitable price as my target audience questionnaire concluded my audience
would be willing to pay up to £4:00.
Also I have taken into consideration that my teenage target audience will be
on a low budget as my questionnaire results showed the majority of my target
audience are students and unemployed. Therefore they would appreciate a
cheaper priced magazine and chose this magazine over a more expensive
option. I would also be giving a 20% student discount to make my product
even more affordable for my audience.
Sales
50p-£1 £1-£2 £2-£3 £3-£4
10. Layout
The layout of text throughout my magazine is important when appealing to a
certain target audience. Especially in my content page I decided to layout the
text in blocks with visible vibrant coloured textbook behind. This made the
content easier to read as it looked like less text being spread out, suggesting
they audience target will easily read my information as it looks less time
consuming. The used of separation of text is a common convention of the
magazine as it makes articles and content look more professional and
legitimate.
In addition to this I also learned through my target audience survey that my
audience prefer articles in form of a question and answer/ interview.
Therefore I wrote my article in a interview format in order to appeal to my
target audience. Due to my target audience being young they stereotypically
will not want to read a large amount of text as I previously mentioned. So I
also used different colours on different categories to make it look like there's
less text.
