2. CONVENTIONS
My use of images from the time between doing the preliminary task and my final
product has greatly increased. I’m now able to see the difference between images
that are seen to be conventional and images that are not. The types of image I
have learnt to take also make a difference in what is and isn't seen to be
conventional, the choice of images seen on my final product can be said to be
very conventional of the genre. however, it could be argued my conventional style
lacks with the main image on my cover.
Between the period of creating my preliminary task and completing my final
product I have gained skills in knowing what is and isn't conventional, and also
how to create conventions on the front cover.
The conventions seen on the preliminary task are very few in number. The fonts
that have been used are not conventional of school magazines and the image that
has been used is quite plain and shows little emotion. The layout of the page is
also not conventional of the typical school magazine, often the pages would be
cluttered where as mine has little text and only one image. But in creating the
preliminary task I have found where I have made mistakes and ways in order to
correct them; in doing so I have created a better magazine.
3. CONVENTIONS
My preliminary task convention page had little in the means of conventions
and as it is a draft little can be seen. The layout of the page is not in -line
with conventions often seen within other magazines and it offers little
information. In comparison to this, my final contents page offers a lot to the
reader. The layout of the page is highly conventional and follows similar
designs to magazines that can be found on the market, it uses route of the
eye, contains multiple images and offers pull quotes as well. More
conventions are, colours and fonts. The colours and fonts that I have used
on the page connote conventions of the genre such as darkness and anger.
4. PHOTOGRAPHY AND MISE-EN-SCENE
Looking back at the preliminary task and comparing it to my final product I can
see that I have gained a better knowledge around photography. The preliminary
task only has one image and one shot type which is very unconventional for
magazines. This has been completely changed in my final piece. I have used a
variety of images, each providing a different angel of camera shot and each image
is conventional of the genre.
My knowledge of mise-en-scene has also greatly improved. My preliminary task
has no props and there is no clear show as to where the image has been taken. In
comparison to this my magazine offers mise-en0scen in the form of props and
costume.
5. IMAGE EDITING
My skills in image editing have improve immensely since doing my preliminary
task. In the preliminary task all I could do was remove the background, whereas,
in my final piece I have removed backgrounds and edited the contrast of the
images as a means of making them more conventional.
6. LAYOUT
Further improvements I have made are in the layout of my magazine. the layout of
my preliminary task is not conventional and does use any tools such as route of
the eye. Compared to this my final magazine uses a good and conventional
layout, I have used route of the eye and it is also something that appeals to my
target audience.
7. FONTS
The fonts that I had used in my preliminary task were very unconventional as they
were sans-serif when they should have all been serif fonts, due to the fonts not
being serif it made an overall less appealing magazine cover. I corrected this
issue however when doing my magazine. I done research and found what styles
of fonts best suited specific magazine genres and in doing so the sans -serif fonts
on my cover look conventional. My preliminary task also only features two types of
font which is not conventional, I corrected this error in my final magazine where I
have used multiple fonts to create a more conventional and appealing cover.
8. COLOURS
The colours that I have used for my preliminary task are very standard and offer
little to look at, they do not look very appealing and are not suited to the genre of
the magazine and the conventions making it less appealing to a target audience. I
change this mistake though when making my magazine as I done research and I
found what colours work well for magazines of the rock genre. By researching this
I was able to create a house style (red, black, yellow, white) that worked well and
was consistent, the colours are also appealing to lack at and as they relate to the
genre they are conventional and draw in my target audience.
9. MODE OF ADDRESS
After completing my preliminary task I found that I didn’t really use a mode of
address as everything is unconventional. Since then my knowledge of conventions
and mode of address has improved greatly from looking at magazines and doing
research. My magazine now has conventional connotations such as anger,
violence and aggression, creating a good tone for the genre of my magazine and
will therefore help in appealing to and attracting my target audience.
