Medical Marijuan A New Miracle Cure Or Is It Still Just An...
Our society is being faced with questions as to the relevancy of medical marijuana. Is this a new
miracle cure or is it still just an illegal drug? This new member to the pharmaceutical world wants
to stand on its own with the many testimonials that can be found for its valuable use. But it still
hits a brick wall when those who remain fixed on the programmed lessons of the past. Reefer, the
killer of all who intake. Or is it really an actual cure for the world of sufferers? State after state is
making the choice to use this as another weapon in their state s arsenal of medicines. Countless
people will testify that it is the one thing that saved their lives, while as with everything there are

Illegal drug to be hidden or legal pharmaceutical can be argued until the end of time while there
will always be some who disagree, it s human nature. Truly it is hard to remove the programmed
thoughts that still remain in our culture that marijuana will always be the reefer madness culprit of
the past. Yet the actual benefits need to be given a chance. Why not? If it is something that can
help even one person should the public not at least think about it? So while the arguments for both
sides remain firm in their belief of the harms and the cures of marijuana, we as an educated society
need to follow through with the proper research.
Marijuana was initially made illegal at the federal level by the Marijuana TaxStamp Act of 1937.
Anyone wanting to sell the drug had to register and pay taxes on it. Then the federal government
simply did not allow people to register or pay taxes, so everyone selling marijuana was doing so
against the law. This act was struck down after a court challenge by Timothy Leary on Fifth
Amendment grounds (of course the government immediately passed another law against it). The
IRS, however, still officially requires people to pay taxes on their income from illegal drugs:
Illegal income, such as money from dealing illegal drugs, must be include in your income on Form
1040, line 21... (IRS Publication 17, p.87) but in more recent years, many of the states have passed

Herodotus Analysis
In the beginning of the book The Essential Herodotus the author Herodotus describes the process
through which he crafted his history. Herodotus mentions that he never intended to write a history
of Greece, but rather a historie, consisting of research and investigations that he had conducted
throughout his travels. Herodotus is known as the father of history ; he was the first person to
begin to create a formal, documented account of the history of Greece. Throughout his travels,
Herodotus acquired new knowledge of geography as well as the belief systems of foreign
civilizations. Herodotus writing style is unique compared to the other ways historians craft
histories. For example, Herodotus often starts his chapters off with mythology.... Show more content

An example of this would be how Herodotus talked about Cyrus son Cambyses, who would later
conquer Egypt and merge it with the Persian Empire; however interspersed with this are detailed
descriptions of the geography of Egypt. It is likely that Herodotus even mentioned the Egyptian
landscape was to show how impressive Cambyses army was. Egypt is a mostly desertious region,
with the Nile being the only major source of water. According to Herodotus, the reason Cambyses
and his men were successful in their assault because there had been water jugs placed throughout
the desert to prevent people from dying of dehydration. Overall, I feel that Herodotus crafted his
history the way he did because there wasn t a set guideline on how to write history to begin with.
Traveling to other countries was the only way to completely validate the facts, and certain countries
proved to have different information than what Herodotus had grown up learning. Herodotus makes
it a point to include mythological references to his history to extend his credibility and give this
writing a reliable. Herodotus inclusion of geographical information served to further support the
various accounts he is

The Copper Mining Process
Copper Mining
Extraction is a key part of the copper production process. There are 3 different techniques that
mining companies use to extract copper ore. The choice of method is dependent on many factors,
including: depth and grade of the ore body, overall reserves, topography and location to name a few.
Surface (Open Pit) Mining
Open pit mining is the predominant method used to extract copper ores and it takes place on the
surface. Overburden and waste rock is stripped off to expose the ore. Holes are drilled into the
rock and samples from this are used to determine the grade of the ore. A mix of ammonium
nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO type explosive) is used to blast the rock to break it apart. Pneumatic
or hydraulic impact hammers are then used to break up bits of ore or waste rock that is too large.
Large shovels then transport the ore onto trucks ready to be processed. This method is ... Show more

There are three different types of underground mining.
Stoping
This involves sinking a vertical shaft which provides access to the ore body. The ore is then
drilled and blasted before being raked down a chute that allows it to be collected. All waste rock is
transported down a different chute. This method is best suited to steeply dipping vein type deposits.
Room and Pillar Operations
Large horizontal drifts are drilled (called rooms) and can be up to 60ft high and 100ft wide. The
rooms are parallel to each other. Many pillars are left undrilled to hold the roof up. Once the mine
reaches the end of the ore body, the pillars are mined (pillar robbing), starting from the back of the
mine and working forward. Timbers support the roof until the pillars have been completely mined
and the roof is allowed to collapse. This method produces the most tonnage out of any other
underground mining technique and is best suited to large, flat deposits.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Polio
In the summer of 1959 a seven year old came in from play feeling feverish and headachy. His
mother gave him aspirin (the drug of choice in that time) and put him to bed with what she
imagined was the flu. The next morning his condition had produced physical weakness in his
legs. A visit to the doctor, and a spinal tap, brought the devastating news: polio. He was rushed to
the isolation ward of the county hospital where his condition was judged to be very grave; the
next morning, he could move nothing but his head. This young boy, my great uncle Ken, spent his
childhood years in and out of hospitals, enduring surgeries, wheelchairs, leg braces, and years of
physical therapy before he was able to walk. Why, at a time when the Salk vaccinewas available,
did my great grandmother, a woman totally dedicated to the welfare of her children, choose not to
vaccinate him against what was then the great terror of childhood?
LIFE BEFORE VACCINES
No disease has had such a profound impact on humanity as smallpox. The Plague of Antonine,
with a death toll of between three and a half to seven million, hastened the decline of the Roman
Empire (Panic, 23). European explorers, bringing the disease to the New World, helped bring about
the fall of the Aztec and Incan empires. In the eighteenth century, 400,000 people a year died from
smallpox (Panic, 23).

Mass Migration and Sharing Economy
Mass migration to Europe and its positive and negative implications
Sharing economy
Introduction
The hotel industry has been strongly growing recently, overcame many events to make us believe
that they will not stop adapting to the new environments. Practicing economics activities helps the
industry to explain the change of the environment and plan the solutions in the most efficient way.
In this report, I will state two of the most recent events which are the mass migration to Europe and
also with the term sharing economy, together with its impacts to the hotel industry under economic
perspective.

The term explanation
Appeared in the early 2000s and becoming a global phenomenon recently, the term
sharing economy (also referred as collaborative consumption) is a hybrid market model, defined as
the peer to peer based activity of obtaining, giving, or sharing the access to goods and services,
coordinated through community based online services (Hamari, 2015).
In a simple explication, it allows everyone to become retailers, make money from their underused
assets for example renting house or car, etc.
Airbnb and its impacts in hospitality
The most genuine way to illustrate the sharing economy type of business is Airbnb (Schor,
2014). Founded in 2008; Airbnb is a website for connecting people who has underused properties
for rent and people who are looking for a place for vacation rental. The Hotel
News Now website (2014) also gave a compliment that Airbnb rises unstoppable with online

Barefoot Running Injuries
This article is about the fast growing technique of endurance running, which has evolved over the
years significantly. Although it may seem like a bit trendy and popular, this particular type of
running has its pros and cons. Due to the fact that endurance running includes a various amount of
repetitive ground impact forces, it is not unlikely for one to develop a stress injury to the lower leg.
In order to decrease the risk that comes along with endurance running, preventative measures should
be enforced. When running some of the most common injuries that one may be at risk for are
patellofemoral pain syndrome, tibial stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendonitis. But in
this article, a new study suggests that Barefoot running contains the potential to promote the
healing process, increase performance, and decrease injury rates. Still to this day disagreement
exists as to whether barefoot/minimalist running stimulates healing, increases performance and
decreases injury rates. After reading this article I became aware that the main purpose of it was to
educate individuals on the long time injuries that one is at risk for when performing running
activates barefoot. In most cases, injuries are often multi factorial, and it... Show more content on

Analyzing the Character of Don John in William Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
The play Much Ado About Nothing was written and performed in the Elizabethan period. It was
set in Italy in a place called Messina. As expected the play has an happy ending with a marriage,
as it is an comedy, except throughout the play you think it may end as an tragedy with lots of talk
of death and misery. The mood swings from light comedy to dark tragedy.
The play appealed to the Elizabethans because it mirrored life of that time. The play includes love,
status and relationships between men and women. Shakespeare play was popular because there

When Don Jon is first introduced to the play he seemed reserved, quiet and you re unaware of
what an evil character he is. I thank you, I m a man of few words, but I thank you. This

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Electricity...
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
The global electricity sector is now facing major challenges i.e. exponentially increasing electricity
demand, fight against climatic changes and increasing trends towards massive urbanization. The
first challenge of ever mounting demands results in continuous depletion of traditional power
generation sources; these are centralized power generation like thermal power plants i.e.
combustion (coal, oil, natural), nuclear power plants etc. and are not suited for environmental and
cost issues. The second challenge relates to the regulation of Greenhouse gas emission. These
gases are responsible for increasing the global temperature. Two third of the global emission are
carbon emissions linked to the energy sector. The third major... Show more content on

salem witchcraft trials cause and effect Essay
In 1692 the area of Salem town and Salem village became very vulnerable to conflict. Severe
weather such as hurricanes had damaged land and crops, the effects of King Phillips War began to
impact New England society, and colonists were being forced off of the frontiers by Native
peoples. The Church and the government were in heavy conflict. And those residing in Salembegan
to grow suspicious of one another when some prospered and others hadn t (Marcus, p13).
Suddenly people seemed very paranoid and soon residents were placing blame on one another and
accusing each other of witchcraft. In a fifteen month period between 1691 and 1692 nearly twelve
dozen people were accused of witchcraft in or near Salem (Norton, p8). ... Show more content on

Relationships between people and families seemed to crumble in the light of hysteria as children
accused parents and friends pointed out friends (Boyer, p67). Some confessed to witchcraft and
saved their own lives, others refused to tarnish their names and proclaimed innocence to their
grave. The fact that these people did not have freedom of speech and were proven guilty without
any tangible evidence caused even more hysteria throughout New England. People realized that at
anytime anyone of them could be pointed out and so the society fell even more.
One can see the Salem witch trials as being an excessive representation of the social and economic
changes taking place in New England at this time (Boyer, p67). Differences between those who
accepted change and those who feared it are what divided the colony. The hanging of witches can
be seen as the murder of difference or of change.
Perhaps if they had not been so insecure about their methods of governing the colony, the Puritans
wouldn t have felt threatened by the slightest change. It took nineteen innocent deaths for the
leaders of Salem to even begin to see the wrong doing in their trials. The Salem witch trials of the
1690 s had an immense impact on American history. These dark times cast a shadow that would

Analysis Of The Hunger Games
In general, Stereotyping affect not only the youth of today but also other individuals. An
individual can be stereotyped based on race, skin color, class warfare or gender. The book, The
Hunger Games, which is now a well known movie, demonstrates how stereotyping can happen to
any individual. In The Hunger Games, Katniss is affected by stereotypes. Being a citizen from
District 12, her appearance and being a female affects the way the Capitol distinguishes her.
District 12 is the poorest district in Panem and everyone expects for the tributes to act as savages
and criminals. During the opening ceremonies, Katniss reminisces about the past tributes
clothing. Since District 12 s principal industry is coal mining, the past tributes have attended the
opening ceremony naked covered in black powder to represent coal dust or skimpy outfits and
hats with headlamps (The Hunger Games 66). District 12 tributes are judged by the Capitol and
the stylist judged them based on where they are from. The past stylists do not put any effort in
designing their clothing since District 12 tributes already look worn out and dirty. Typically,
everyone in the Capitol judges Katniss and Peeta because they are from a poorer side of Panem.
By stereotyping, we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristics and abilities that we
assume all members of that group have. It leads to social categorization which is one of the
reasons for prejudice attitudes (Mclead). There are plenty of young

Afghanistan Today Is One Of The Most Violent And Unstable
Afghanistan today is one of the most violent and unstable countries in the world and is
economically and politically on its knees after decades of conflict. There are five main obstacles
are preventing Afghanistan from developing, which are high levels of corruption, crime, insecurity,
drug trafficking, and lawlessness (DFID, 2005). The current Afghan government is struggling to
improve these issues despite receiving billions of dollars of foreign aid. The Talibangoverned
Afghanistanfrom 1996 2001 after a devastating civil war and their rule was characterised by the

Strict laws were implemented which resulted in criminal activity drastically reducing in the country
(Rubin, 2000). Since the country had experienced years of conflict and lost its political institutions,
the Taliban felt that the population would not be as responsive to lenient and moderate laws
compared to strict laws that would reduce crime rates and act as deterrents (Hartley Blecic, 2000).
The strategy was successful in terms of reducing crime levels, but the punishments were often harsh
(Goodson, 2001). When the Taliban were ousted in 2001, criminal activity increased drastically
with the return of organised crime gangs (Shaw, 2006). The Afghan government s attempts to tackle
these problems have not been as successful as the Taliban in terms of reducing crime levels (REF).
This is partly because the Afghan government has weak law enforcement and many corrupt
government officials have links to the crime gangs (Smith, 2016).
2. Corruption
Pre Taliban Afghanistan was plagued with corruption at all levels of society due to the weak rule of
law of the almost non existent central government and the power of the many corrupt warlords that
controlled most of the country (Payind, 1996; Rais, 1999). When the Taliban came into power, they

Language and Literacy
EDKL102 Assessment Task 1
Essay What is Language? What is Literacy? How are they different?
Teachers must have a sound knowledge and appreciation for language and literacy to be able to
make the two concepts a valuable part of a student s curriculum.
This essay will explore the importance of language and literature in a students learning and how
they assist in enhancing their development. Most importantly the similarities and differences will
be distinguished so that the relationship between the two can be understood. Defining both

Vygotsky believed that by the time a child enters school, they use language not only for
communicative purposes, but also for thinking and planning (Daniels at el, 2007 pg.138).
Literacy is control of secondary use of language. It can be seen as being able to apply language
to use , function and control . We all use language everyday; however literacy is the act of
applying our knowledge of language. We use language to produce a range of modes for different
purposes and audiences. Literacy is used to develop language and use it, for practical and
purposeful situations and work. There is little use for possessing the knowledge of language if we
cannot use and apply it in our everyday lives to gain knowledge and understanding (Kervin 2010).
As educators, we must be aware that our knowledge of literacy and how we convey it to our
children is an essential and ongoing process that is constantly adapting. The importance of
applying the student s knowledge of language to literacy is crucial as it plays a crucial part in a
child s education, development and life skills. If a child cannot apply their language skills to

Homeless Population Of New South Wales
Overview In a country as prosperous as Australia, no one should have to be homeless.
The Road Home, 2008
Homelessness is a complex problem and not simply a lack of housing. It has numerous causes that
affect different groups differently. In Australia, there are approximately 105000 people
experiencing homelessness reported in the 2011 census. This equates to one in every two hundred
people. The homeless population of New South Wales accounts for over one quarter of the total in
Australia, at over 28000. One is considered to be homeless if they do not have access to safe,
secure and adequate housing. Homelessness generally refers to three types of homelessness with

This report aims to address the issue of homelessness and give detailed information in regards to
the topic, as well as to answer the following questions.
В¬What are the main causes of homelessness in the Sydney CBD?
В¬How are the homeless affected (physical mental) and what actions are they taking?
В¬How are other members of society affected?
В¬What actions have been taken reduce the rate of homelessness and its effects?
В¬What actions could be taken to reduce the rate of homelessness and its effects?
In Regards to Accuracy
It is important to address the issues and limitations that may be present in this report. Recent and
reliable reports on the homeless is severely lacking, likely as a result of the sensitivity of the
issue. Similarly, the Sydney CBD is an extremely specific area and much of the information
collected is not specific to this area. Much of the information collected were extrapolated from data
that covered a larger area. As such, it is important to recognise that due to the nature of the data
collected, the information presented may be inaccurate or biased. Causes of Homelessness There
are numerous causes to homelessness. Specific events can cause homelessness, such as losing a

Descriptive Essay About Vacation
During the summer of 2017, I went on vacation with my parents, and also with my best friend,
Shae Simon. We all went to an amusement park named Kings Island. Kings Island has always
been one of my favorite places to go, and it still is. Kings Island is so much fun that I ve been

Our trip starts a day before we leave, Shae had spent the night with me, because we had to leave

about three to four hours to get to Mason, Ohio. Mason, Ohio is where Kings Island is, and also
where our hotel was. We set off for Mason, and about thirty minutes after we left, we already had

Dubois and the Color Line Essay
3.) According to DuBois, the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.
Using several representative examples, consider how American writers (of any color) since the
Civil War have addressed this problem.
DuBois s quote, The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, tells a great
deal of how Americans in general felt towards segregation each side had suspicions about the
goings ons of the other race. Blacks had a stronger sense of such hesitency because of their history
with Whites, and Whites were generally afraid of anything different than themselves, thus the
enslavement. Hughes, as a writer, dealt with this problem in a way that few had done, and fewer
had done successfully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This caused many blacks to feel shame for their roots and ancestral past, and a small but powerful
voice in their mind whispered the words that Hughes called the Racial Mountain: I want to be
white . Many blacks at the time could not feel anything but shame for their past, and Hughes
wanted the opposing outlook on that scale to feel pride in being black; to recognize the true beauty
within themselves which is where true being, and true art, can begin to flower and flourish.
DuBois s story The Veil shows a concept that is visible on many levels. The veil can be seen as the
literal darker skin of the black people, which is an easy way to identitify any race from any other
race. This physical trait allows for discrimination solely because it is the easiest thing to point
out. The veil also explores the idea of the White s lack of acceptance of Blacks as Americans, let
alone real Americans. The veil also covers the notion of the Blacks inability to see themselves
outside of what America (White Americans) had described them as.
Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddeness that I was different from the others; or like
[them perhaps] in heart and life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil. I had
thereafter no desire to tear down that veil, to creep through; I held all beyond it in common

Treatment Of Women In The Gospels Essay
In the beginning, women s status and freedoms were severely limited. Many people may believe
that they had started off with just as many obligations as men, but that is not the case at all.
Actually, it is the complete opposite, women had nothing when it came to the early days of the
Gospel. That is until Jesus came around and changed things. Here we will discuss three very
important details of women in the Gospels. We will discuss women in ancient Israel around the
time of Jesus and how they were expected to act, then we will move on to Jesus radical treatment
of women and how Jesus was technically, in today s definition, a feminist , finally we will discuss
passages where Jesus apparently does not call for equality of the sexes. All in... Show more content

Jesus teaching must have seemed very radical. How Jesus treated women was dramatically different
from how they were treated among the Jewish society. He consistently treated men and women as
equals. Which in today s society is the definition of a Feminist. According to Dictionary.com,
Feminist means advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of
men. Jesus violated many of the Old Testament regulations, which specified gender inequality. He
refused to follow the rules that were established by the three main religious groups of the day.
Those three religious groups consisted of the Essenes, Pharisees and Sadducees. There are
many examples on the Jesus radical treatment of women, one would include how he taught
women students. Jewish tradition at the time was to not allow women to be taught. In Luke
10:38 42, he taught Mary, sister of Martha. Jesus also used terminology which treated women as
equal to men. For example, in Luke 13:16 it describes how Jesus cured a women from a Satanic
Spirit. He called her a daughter of Abraham, therefore implying that she had equal status with
sons of Abraham. Another example of Jesus use of terminology can be described in Luke 7:35 to
8:50 where it is described how Jesus forgave a woman s sins. He refers to women and men as
children of

Analysis Of Watchman Nee s Song Of Songs
The book Song of Songs, by Watchman Nee is about his interpretation of the book in the Bible
Song of Songs, written by Solomon. The book in the Bible is basically about the romance
between a lover and his beloved. The language speaks of the love in a marriage relationship and
the pursuing nature of the two lovers. It is a very touching dialogue and has a lot of meaning
hidden in the text. Watchmen Nee brings to life his interpretation of the text and how it relates to
believers pursuit of Christ. He also goes into the spiritual aspect of the Biblical text in his
interpretations. The read is very deep and informative on what is actually written in the Song of
Songs. He gives many insights into the book in the Bible, many that relate to believers now and
some that I touched my life. There are many sections of the book Song of Songs ranging from,
The Initial Pursuit and Satisfaction, to The Groaning of the Flesh and so on. Each of the
sections cover certain verses from the Biblical text and include subsections on the interpretation
of verses. The part of the book that touched me the most was in section two, on The Call for
Deliverance from the Self, specifically, Failure and Recovery. This section speaks of how the
beloved wants to dwell with her lover in his presence, living with the him and his benefits, but not
wanting to change her ways to be closer to him. As Watchman Nee says, in other words, she is
seeking after pleasure in her feeling, and she is reluctant to

My Experience In High School
Before graduating elementary and jumping into middle school my homeroom adviser always
advises us to try and enter the school program in this particular high school. The thing is to enter
the program you need to take an entrance exam and get at least 85% on it. The first week of
May 2012 my mom and I went to my elementary school to collect my transcripts that I needed to
enroll for grade 7. At that moment and for the last time I saw my grade 6 teachers. Upon getting
my transcripts I can hear my grade six teachers asking my mom if I will take the entrance exam.
Two weeks later after getting my transcripts, my mother and I went to the high school. The school
was crowded, it was very foreign to me, as I viewed it as I am a small shack in a city full of
skyscrapers. Before enrolling, we talked about trying to take the entrance exam for the program
the high school offers, I agreed. There is no harm in trying anyway, so I will try to give my best
just to pass that exam. Then the day of the entrance exam came. I expected that you can seat
wherever you want during the exam but to my dismay that wasn t the case. The spectators
arrange us alphabetically, so being my last name starts with an A, I was always the first one or if I
am lucky the second one to be called. The spectators were calling our last names one by one,
boys were the first one to be called. After all the boys were called, I got nervous as it is the girls
turn to be called. I was called third, and I was placed in the room where the boys are taking the
exam. Along with the two girls that I don t know and who is sitting in the far front.
During the duration of the exam, I can hear paper shuffling repeatedly. I looked at where the
noise was coming from and lucky enough it was the guy who is sitting beside me. I thought that
I can just say a few words and tell him to stop flipping his paper but I failed, as on the other hand,
he thought I am going to engage in a conversation with him. He began asking me what school I
came from, why am I so pale and that s even questionable because I m not pale, etc. At first, I
ignored him hoping that he will stop talking, he didn t.
Results came, I was very glad that I passed the exam at the same time nervous and I don t

Rock N Roll Impact On Society
#2 compare and contrast the nature, role, and impact of rock n roll with that of beat poetry and
the avant garde. how were these artistic expressions similar, and in what ways did they
significantly diverge? Rock n roll is an important genre of music. It not only have the power to
influence but also sustain itself throughout many generations. American society has been hugely
impacted by rock n roll consistently setting trends for pop music and persuading other genres of

Machiavelli The Prince Essay
In The Prince and Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli breaks from the precedent set by early
political thinkers. Machiavelli unleashes a critical attack on the Church both as an institution and
also as a belief system. Machiavelli blames the institution of the Church for interfering in politics
which ends regimes. He treats the popes as though they are secular leaders who serve as examples
of what a ruler should do to maintain power. He calls it corrupt. He then criticizes the religionof
Christianity for contributing to these problems and dividing Italy. Machiavelli first targets the
Church as an institution in The Prince. Throughout his The Prince, Machiavelli treats the Church as
a state and the popes as rulers of that state. One of the first... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Machiavelli has two areas of criticism. The first area indicating Machiavelli s criticism of the
papacy revolves around the expansion of the territory under control of the pope. He argues that,
Alexander VI, who, more than all the other popes there have been, demonstrated how much a
pope, using both money and arms, could get his own way (11, p. 37). Machiavelli depicts Pope
Alexander VI almost despotically since Machiavelli sees the pope as being able to get whatever
he wants by force or fortune. Machiavelli sees this as a trend in popes to follow such as Julius II
who, had opportunities to accumulate money of a sort that had not existed before Alexander (11,
p. 37). Machiavelli places a focus on the accumulation of wealth by the popes subtly implying that
wealth was important for popes at that time. Machiavelli concludes his criticism of this procession
of the popes by commenting that he hopes the new pope, Leo X, will increase that power but also
make the Church worth of respect (11, p. 37 38). Machiavelli, like before, makes an implication
about the Church, this time that it is currently not

Pathological Pain
In order to fully answer this question, it is important to understand the definition of pain. The
International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and
emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of
such damage (Mersky and Bogduk ed 1994). The physiological function of the painsensory system
is protective in nature, to shield the body from actual or potential tissue damage. Pathological
pain, on the other hand, is described as spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia, that persist
for years or decades after all possible tissue healing has occurred (Coderre et al 1993).

There are many mechanisms for the sensitisation of nociceptors. A common scenario for this
occurrence is when peripheral tissue is subjected to exogenous injury, whether it be mechanical,
chemical, or toxic. Injury results in localised increase in inflammatory mediators, leading to the
sensitisation of nociceptors. Upregulation and increased expression of various membrane receptors
is the most common mechanism. Ionotropic receptors, Gq protein coupled metabotropic receptors,
Gs protein coupled metabotropic receptors, and mitogen activated protein kinase have been shown
to be upregulated in nociceptors in response to the presence of inflammatory mediators (Sessle ed
2008). The resultant effect is increased conductance, lowered threshold for the initiation of action
potentials, spontaneous depolarisation, and increased after discharges to supra threshold stimuli
(Sessle ed 2008). Sprouting, or the growth of neuronal axons into the damaged tissue, also
contributes to pathological pain. Increased number of nociceptive axons increases the opportunity
for spatial and temporal summation and activation of nociceptors, which under normal conditions
would not be activated. Sufficient concentration of inflammatory mediators can also lead to the
activation of nociceptors which do not participate in the detection of noxious stimulus (Sessle ed
2008). With an increased number of nociceptors feeding back to the CNS, the sensation of pain is

The Man Who Killed The Deer Analysis
Tradition is a big part of a cultural identity. Traditions are not loved nor understood immediately,
however with time the importance of tradition becomes evident as it makes people unique. As a
kid, serving meals every thanksgiving may feel insignificant and tedious, but as an adolescent the
small amount of time spent as a family doing something annually has a lasting impact on one s
values. Frank Waters fictional novel, The Man Who Killed the Deer, Martiniano struggles to find a
faith after he illegally kills a deer. Neither the whites not the Indians seem welcoming because he
offends both by breaking the law and not showing respect to Indian ideology. The deer continues to
haunt him until he understands the role of nature and the cycle of life. The poem I Have Killed the
Deer , written by a Taos Pueblo Indian, emphasizes the importance of equality and the mystical
connection with nature. Both works highlight the unique Indian perspective of nature and its
contribution their identity. Both Martiniano and the Taos Pueblo Indian use nature to provide life;
Martiniano s self centered view on the old Indian traditions prevent him from finding peace in a
faith, while the Taos Pueblo Indian fully appreciates and understands his role in nature. While both
Martiniano and the Taos Pueblo Indian use death to provide themselves with life, the two show a
different level of respect to the role of nature. After Martiniano returns from the Government school,

Persuasive Speech On Domestic Violence
ONE STEP TOWARDS JUSTICE:
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Right now, right at this very instant, a silent war all across the nation is being waged. A violation
of humanity, a crime that is least prosecuted, and a great threat endangering the lives of thousands
of women and children daily. Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We
live in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn t be
let out. We know it s happening, and even hear or see the events. But who s taking action?
I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic?
Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we re shocked at
first but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the
struggle, and a step to save our nation.
And yes, I m not anyone special, I don t study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence
myself. But I m here to tell a story. I m here to make a change. And I m here to encourage all of
you to do the same.
I m going to share an experience I had. Something that I ve regretted and hated myself for since,
knowing that help could ve been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a
family member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened
but she just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the
bruises became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go
lucky girl I knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you,
sometimes the people who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. And this was exactly the
case. Flashforward a few months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of
domestic abuse.
Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself.
Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. And to this day, I still can t even begin the fathom how
anyone could possibly put their hands on someone they loved. To purposely harm their significant
other and act like everything is fine. And to the victims who have to live

God Bless The Usa Analysis
The artifact that expresses my view of America is the song, God Bless the USA written and sung
by Lee Greenwood. Although written in the 1980s, this song rose to popularity after the 9/11
attack on the World Trade Center. God Bless the USA is a motivating song that I believe
reassured the American people and gave them hope after such a traumatic incident. The musical
qualities of God Bless the USA help to construct Greenwood s vision of America. The song begins
with clear piano and guitar notes, which creates a slow and reflective feel. However, as the song
continues, the music builds up until it is proud symphony of violins. This transition shows the
moral strength of the American people. As the music gets closer to the chorus, there... Show more

technology to revive a frozen body is still dependent to science. Without proper knowledge on

The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay
The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s
Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve
centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable
ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of
current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the
western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the
Founder of the Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Gameswere sustained until 393 A.D when
Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen
hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its
resurrection was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in
1894. His innovative idea was to uncover the present day Games in 1900 in his local Paris,
however appoints from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move
the Games up to 1896 and have Athens serve as the main host.
The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close by city of Elis,
won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. This was the only athletic competition of the
Olympics for the initial 13 Olympic games or until 724 BC. The Olympic Games, initially

Today, the Standing Rock Sioux have been joined by members of over 200 other Native American
tribes and allies in fighting against the DAPL. The protest was able to gain great attention from the
media, the citizens, and the White House. In a surprising and historic decision, the Obama
Administration temporarily blocked the DAPL in 2016, to the joy of the protesters. Additionally,
the Obama Administration invited tribes to a formal consultations that fall to discuss whether any
federal regulations surrounding national infrastructure projects, like the DAPL, should be
reformed to protect tribal resources and rights. Because of the protest and support, Obama s visit
to the Sinox North Dakota reservation became the first by a sitting president to any reservation
since 1999 and the third presidential visit overall in the nation s history. Yet this progress was
short lived. Current President Donald J. Trump has already greenlighted the DAPL, along with the
Keystone XL pipeline. On June 1, 2017, the DAPL began shipping oil Thursday, yet the fight is far

Customer and Employee SurveysCustomer and employee surveys are custom designed surveys
and feedback cards designed specifically for Greyhound Bus Lines to assess, measure and compare
the external customers needs, wants and expectations within Greyhound Bus Lines. The surveys

Aquatic Experience In Pediatric Emergency Room
For children and adolescents, the experience in pediatric emergency waiting rooms can be
problematic. According to different age groups, there are a variety of psychosocial concerns and
developmental considerations that health professionals should be aware of in the pediatric unit.
The environment of the emergency room is busy and chaotic, which can increase the level of
anxiety and stress for the whole family. For infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children,
parentseparation is a common factor that makes them anxious (Brunnquell Kohen, 1991). In the
chaotic environment, children express their anxiety by crying, kicking or even regressive behaviors
such as stop walking. Thus, there should be more family couches for patients to

Summary Of The Song Concrete Angel
While child abuse can indirectly cause obesity, it is often directly responsible for child death. The
Song Concrete Angel written by Martina McBride illustrates the pain and hardships of a child who
was abused, neglected and then died. McBride explains the fear and the worry the child felt each
day and then reminds listeners that many abused children don t even live to adulthood. Often times,
the long term effect of child abuseand neglect is death. She argues that people need to do more to
help those that are abused when she sings She hides the bruises with the linen and lace, oh/The
teacher wonders but she doesn t ask ( McBride 4 5), and later on in the song, Somebody cries in the

Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn T Call The Police, By...
When humans experience excessive stress, whether from internal worry or an external
circumstance, stimulus occurs and triggers a reaction called the fight or flight response. This
response is built into our brains and is designed to protect us from bodily harm, preparing our
body for running or fighting. Throughout Lord of the Flies by William Golding, The Destructors
by Graham Greene, and the article Thirty Eight Who Saw Murder Didn t Call the Police by Martin
Gansberg, both ideas of fight or flight are displayed. When faced with a tremendously stressful
situation, those who have qualities of a leader tend to fight, addressing the problem directly and
heading straight in. Those with a follower mentality tend to take flight, freezing up and... Show

The mental debate that goes on within Jack s head, is whether or not he should listen to reason
and let his fear keep him grounded. The inner voice of reason tries to stop Jack from trudging
forward into the feared danger, but he could hear Piggy [...] calling him a kid, which in turn
added this additional pressure to fight instead of listening to his gut instinct to run away
(Golding 122). Followers like Piggy, put Jack s role as leader to the test. Despite his evident
fear, Jack chooses to fight instead of take flight because of his perceived leadership character.
Similarly, in The Destructors, Trevor or T, rises as a new leader within the gang that he joins. In
the beginning of the short story, T suggests that the gang break into Old Misery s house and tear
it down from the inside. At first, the boys are skeptical and wonder about whether [they d] go to
jug for committing such a crime, but T reassures them that his plan is foolproof through the
intensity in his voice (Greene 4). Since T gives off a confident impression in his words, a sense
of validity, the boys agree to follow through with the plan. Eventually, even Blackie acknowledges
the end of his leadership and succeeds his position as leader of the group to T (Greene 5). When

Monuments Essay
Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. His full length portrait is carved into the Stone of
Hope as the stone itself is emerging from two boulders known as the Mountain of Despair. These
powerful words were derived from the side of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorialthat was
created to represent his soul rousing I Have A Dream speech. The memorialization of MLK and
this event s significance and impact on history was exquisitely executed, in my opinion. If you had
to take the responsibility of memorializing someone or a noteworthy event, how would you go
about doing so? Creating a monument takes time, hard work, and good reasoning. There are many

Another example of a muddled purpose lies within The Maine Lobsterman. Maine is known for
its fishermen, so H. Elroy Johnson, a resident of Maine who trapped lobsters for a living, was
chosen to be memorialized. As his statue was moved from place to place its purpose was lost
because he truly represented his home state of Maine only. When developing a monument, its
purpose is at the root of its success and should be timeless and/or clear to those who will view it in
the general public.
Secondly, placement is a key factor in creating a monument of someone or an event. As described
in Source E, placement could offend the surrounding population. In this source, the Holocaust
Museum is located in The Mall in Washington, DC and it offended both Jewish and non Jewish
communities. This is primarily due to the fact that a museum dedicated to the memory of the
Holocaust would be built in the United States, who did little to stop the Holocaust from
occurring, or... ...open our shores to the few survivors... . The United States didn t act on what it
stands for, equality and freedom, and so to have it there seemed to be a sign of disrespect to
many. On the other hand, supporters believed, such as George Will, a political columnist, that, No

Labour Issues at United Airlines
LABOR ISSUES AT UNITED AIRLINES Collective Bargaining Issues at United Airlines United
Airlines is one of the leading airline companies in the United States. It is also one of the largest
airlines in the world. According to the company website, United Airlines operated two million
flights in 2011 and transported 142 million passengers. On average, it operates more than 5,500
flights a day to 377 airports all over the world (United Airlines, 2012). In 2010, United Airlines
entered into a merger with Continental Airlines with the promise of saving around $1 billion
annually. The merger required the operations of the two entities to be combined as well. However,
the negotiations between management and union representatives have been slow and discouraging.
Labor representatives are trying to secure a collective agreement for workers of both United and
Continental but have failed to do so even more than two and a half years after the merger. This has
become a potential cause of a stand off between labor and management at United. United Airlines
has been welcoming of union participation throughout its history. As of December 2010, 72% of
United Airlines employees were represented by unions ranging from the International Association
of Machinists and Aerospace Workers to the International Air Line Pilots Association (United
Airlines Annual Report, 2010). However, since the merger, it has been dragging its feet in
completing a collective bargaining agreement for the merged

Media Influence On Elections
Media is known as the king maker for many reasons, such as shaping candidates in audience s
perspective. Television has been a big influence in shaping voters choice and labeling political
parties, even though some believe media information can be scant in regards to candidates. Media
can be anything from television to social medianetworks and how many people think that media is
a great influence, some also think it can be a problem. It only takes 140 characters to damage a
political campaign in which Smith is referring to social media as being a problem. (Smith, K. 2011.

Appearances on entertainment shows, gives candidates an escape from the highly critical
national press to a much more friendlier environment for them. A great example would be
interviews on Comedy Central s The Daily Show or Colbert Report. Another beneficial outlet for
campaigns is social websites that were mainly used in the 2008 election and continued through
2012 elections. For example, nearly six million people viewed the New York Time s posting of
the first Obama Romney debate on YouTube . (Dunaway Graber. 2009. Pg. 316) In 2012 the
Obama campaign turned to Twitter to target direct messages to voters and contributors, they also
had more than sixteen million e mail addresses. Others sources of direct social media that
campaigns use are candidate sponsored websites, campaign websites, and special interest pages for
groups such as senior citizens, veterans, college students, or young

Sex, Rhetoric, And The Public Monument
Read Sex, Rhetoric, and the Public Monument by Irene J. Winter. What is the main argument of
this article? What evidence does the author use? Do you agree with the author s argument? Why or
why not?
Chiseled in stone yet standing high upon the apogee of a mountain, a sexually seductive sovereign
can be found. Though supposedly neither human nor god, he remains just barely within arm s
reach of the rays of divine sunlight. He is unwavering both in his alluring, dominant stance and his
brutal authority, especially compared to his enemies, one which lays mercilessly beneath his firm
feet, with a spear gutting his neck. With all eyes looking in his trajectory, his gaze focuses high
above anyone else. His body is striking and his power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the archetype of Naram SГ®m shows to be the epitome of the perfect male for which other
men strive to embody.
This concept is conveniently backed by the elders of Naram SГ®m, who were successful in
claiming that these attributes came in the form of being divine. This claim to divinity literally
underpinned their ascension to power and the relegation of everyone else; rulers were to be revered
for their beauty and power because it was truly their god given right. Alas, Winter argues that the
sexual allure of the ruler s body firmly functions was a mechanism to continue aggrandizing their
own status and dominance.
Winter succesfully notes that this dominance and power was also preserved by what we would
call propaganda. In regards to another period of art, Winter suggests that aesthetic pleasure can
serve as the vehicle by which a highly seductive ideal vision is articulated for the citizen viewer .
In regards to the stela, the viewer sees an image of an audacious, virtuous hero, the signifier which
may have instilled and preserved the distorted perception of hierarchy. Though the idea of being an
alpha male is nothing new at this point in history, it does become physically stamped into history,
used to gain loyalty between the ruler and the ruled.
However, this belief was not exclusive to just the king and his subjects, but also between

The Basics on Brazil
Brazil
Brazil is an amazing and exiting country with all that you can do, including tours of the Amazon or
going to the beach or maybe even going to the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer. So with the
many things you can do, this is Brazil. So, Brazil occupies about half of South America, meaning
Brazil alone is larger than the contiguous United States of America (the original 48 states). Brazil
is located south of the equator, it borders the Atlantic Ocean, and is the largest country in South

Examples Of Power As A Tool
Power as a Tool: Use that Wisely
Introduction
The philosopher Nietzsche has constantly argued about man s will to power. His argument was
reflected in several works and influenced many other writers and philosophers over centuries.
Anything which is a living and not a dying body... will have to be an incarnate will to power, it will
strive to grow, spread, seize, become predominant not from any morality or immorality but because
it is living and because life simply is will to power... Nietzsche states in his book Will to Power .
As a result, living beings, including us humans, want to be part of this universe and be essential to
it. The will to power describes mainly the need to live and exist, but not only that, it also
encompasses the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Someone who wants to exert power to maintain himself as the custodian of this power, no matter
the consequence, and loses self identity and worth over time. A mother, a wife, a father, a husband
or a spouse have the power to influence others and these roles start to define the person himself.
People have roles that define how they view themselves and why they are needed. As a result, if
they exert this power to preserve the role no matter the consequence they end up destroying the
relationships that defines their role from the very start. They start losing their own identity and
focus on the role instead. Thus a mother may become more controlling and a spouse more
jealous. They lose listening skills and empathy over time where trust degenerates. It is important
that people do not become self absorbed in performing their role and the power associated with
it because they start losing their identity and become mere actors of their role rather than living
their lives fully. The crucial element in developing appropriate moral attitudes to the world
around us is sympathy: the ability to recognize, interprets, and understands what another person
is experiencing; the sympathetic person is pleased by the beneficial experiences of others and
feels unease at harmful ones (Beard, 2014). However, some may believe that power granted by
roles and family ties should be exerted in order to have a better structure of family and
relationships, where boundaries are defined and secured. Fairness and rights are less important
than loyalty and patriotism, sacred/profane issues of purity, temperance and obedience to authority
(Fish, 2013). However, power in relationships can be exerted to preserve this relationship but in a
positive way where people with certain roles can optimize their role by being affirmative, listeners
and good communicators. Exerting power to

passed down from mother to daughter: a jar that had been Mrs. Ota s was now being used by
Chikako. After Mrs. Ota s death, it had passed to her daughter, and from Fumiko it had come to
Kikuji (Kawabata 108). To underscore these concepts and establish their importance in the novel,
the author demonstrates how tea vessels evolve into cultural artifacts, embodying values and
carrying tradition with them: It s a great waste not to use Shino for tea. You can t bring out the
real beauty of a tea piece unless you set it off against its own kind (Kawabata 27). The sixteenth

I sometimes look at it now that she is dead, and there does seem to be a sort of flush in one place
(Kawabata 93). Mrs. Ota s lipstick that has tainted the Shino not only represents the unique story
behind this individual tea vessel, but also shows how Mrs. Ota herself has imprinted the tea vessel.
Metaphorically, the characters actions intrinsically impact her daughter s life. After Mrs. Ota dies,
Fumiko inherits not only the tea vessel but also the wreckage of her complex relationship with
Kikuji. As a result, Fumiko cannot escape the past and is left feeling resentful towards her deceased
mother. Similarly, Kikuji s obsession and bizarre relationships with his father s former mistresses,
underscore the impact of his father s life on his own. In both cases the legacies of their parents
impact not only their emotions, but also their actions and choices. It is in this manner that the
author successfully uses the tea ceremony not only as a metaphor for the continuity tradition, but
also to convey the nature of intergenerational

  • 2. Medical Marijuan A New Miracle Cure Or Is It Still Just An... Our society is being faced with questions as to the relevancy of medical marijuana. Is this a new miracle cure or is it still just an illegal drug? This new member to the pharmaceutical world wants to stand on its own with the many testimonials that can be found for its valuable use. But it still hits a brick wall when those who remain fixed on the programmed lessons of the past. Reefer, the killer of all who intake. Or is it really an actual cure for the world of sufferers? State after state is making the choice to use this as another weapon in their state s arsenal of medicines. Countless people will testify that it is the one thing that saved their lives, while as with everything there are those whom say that this was the ruination... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Illegal drug to be hidden or legal pharmaceutical can be argued until the end of time while there will always be some who disagree, it s human nature. Truly it is hard to remove the programmed thoughts that still remain in our culture that marijuana will always be the reefer madness culprit of the past. Yet the actual benefits need to be given a chance. Why not? If it is something that can help even one person should the public not at least think about it? So while the arguments for both sides remain firm in their belief of the harms and the cures of marijuana, we as an educated society need to follow through with the proper research. Marijuana was initially made illegal at the federal level by the Marijuana TaxStamp Act of 1937. Anyone wanting to sell the drug had to register and pay taxes on it. Then the federal government simply did not allow people to register or pay taxes, so everyone selling marijuana was doing so against the law. This act was struck down after a court challenge by Timothy Leary on Fifth Amendment grounds (of course the government immediately passed another law against it). The IRS, however, still officially requires people to pay taxes on their income from illegal drugs: Illegal income, such as money from dealing illegal drugs, must be include in your income on Form 1040, line 21... (IRS Publication 17, p.87) but in more recent years, many of the states have passed their own specific drug ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Herodotus Analysis In the beginning of the book The Essential Herodotus the author Herodotus describes the process through which he crafted his history. Herodotus mentions that he never intended to write a history of Greece, but rather a historie, consisting of research and investigations that he had conducted throughout his travels. Herodotus is known as the father of history ; he was the first person to begin to create a formal, documented account of the history of Greece. Throughout his travels, Herodotus acquired new knowledge of geography as well as the belief systems of foreign civilizations. Herodotus writing style is unique compared to the other ways historians craft histories. For example, Herodotus often starts his chapters off with mythology.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of this would be how Herodotus talked about Cyrus son Cambyses, who would later conquer Egypt and merge it with the Persian Empire; however interspersed with this are detailed descriptions of the geography of Egypt. It is likely that Herodotus even mentioned the Egyptian landscape was to show how impressive Cambyses army was. Egypt is a mostly desertious region, with the Nile being the only major source of water. According to Herodotus, the reason Cambyses and his men were successful in their assault because there had been water jugs placed throughout the desert to prevent people from dying of dehydration. Overall, I feel that Herodotus crafted his history the way he did because there wasn t a set guideline on how to write history to begin with. Traveling to other countries was the only way to completely validate the facts, and certain countries proved to have different information than what Herodotus had grown up learning. Herodotus makes it a point to include mythological references to his history to extend his credibility and give this writing a reliable. • 4. The Copper Mining Process Copper Mining Extraction is a key part of the copper production process. There are 3 different techniques that mining companies use to extract copper ore. The choice of method is dependent on many factors, including: depth and grade of the ore body, overall reserves, topography and location to name a few. Surface (Open Pit) Mining Open pit mining is the predominant method used to extract copper ores and it takes place on the surface. Overburden and waste rock is stripped off to expose the ore. Holes are drilled into the rock and samples from this are used to determine the grade of the ore. A mix of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO type explosive) is used to blast the rock to break it apart. Pneumatic or hydraulic impact hammers are then used to break up bits of ore or waste rock that is too large. Large shovels then transport the ore onto trucks ready to be processed. This method is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are three different types of underground mining. Stoping This involves sinking a vertical shaft which provides access to the ore body. The ore is then drilled and blasted before being raked down a chute that allows it to be collected. All waste rock is transported down a different chute. This method is best suited to steeply dipping vein type deposits. Room and Pillar Operations Large horizontal drifts are drilled (called rooms) and can be up to 60ft high and 100ft wide. The rooms are parallel to each other. Many pillars are left undrilled to hold the roof up. Once the mine reaches the end of the ore body, the pillars are mined (pillar robbing), starting from the back of the mine and working forward. Timbers support the roof until the pillars have been completely mined and the roof is allowed to collapse. This method produces the most tonnage out of any other underground mining technique and is best suited to large, flat deposits. Block ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Symptoms And Treatment Of Polio In the summer of 1959 a seven year old came in from play feeling feverish and headachy. His mother gave him aspirin (the drug of choice in that time) and put him to bed with what she imagined was the flu. The next morning his condition had produced physical weakness in his legs. A visit to the doctor, and a spinal tap, brought the devastating news: polio. He was rushed to the isolation ward of the county hospital where his condition was judged to be very grave; the next morning, he could move nothing but his head. This young boy, my great uncle Ken, spent his childhood years in and out of hospitals, enduring surgeries, wheelchairs, leg braces, and years of physical therapy before he was able to walk. Why, at a time when the Salk vaccinewas available, did my great grandmother, a woman totally dedicated to the welfare of her children, choose not to vaccinate him against what was then the great terror of childhood? LIFE BEFORE VACCINES No disease has had such a profound impact on humanity as smallpox. The Plague of Antonine, with a death toll of between three and a half to seven million, hastened the decline of the Roman Empire (Panic, 23). European explorers, bringing the disease to the New World, helped bring about the fall of the Aztec and Incan empires. In the eighteenth century, 400,000 people a year died from smallpox (Panic, 23). If we will not be able to prevent and stop crimes, tourism will be affected since people are avoiding traveling in the area, then the hospitality will be influenced. Sharing economy and its impacts The term explanation Appeared in the early 2000s and becoming a global phenomenon recently, the term sharing economy (also referred as collaborative consumption) is a hybrid market model, defined as the peer to peer based activity of obtaining, giving, or sharing the access to goods and services, coordinated through community based online services (Hamari, 2015). In a simple explication, it allows everyone to become retailers, make money from their underused assets for example renting house or car, etc. Airbnb and its impacts in hospitality The most genuine way to illustrate the sharing economy type of business is Airbnb (Schor, 2014). Founded in 2008; Airbnb is a website for connecting people who has underused properties for rent and people who are looking for a place for vacation rental. The Hotel News Now website (2014) also gave a compliment that Airbnb rises unstoppable with online booking net with exponential annual growth, and would usurp the InterContinental Hotels Group and Hilton Worldwide as the world s largest hotel chain without owning a single hotel (Strong, 2015). • 7. Barefoot Running Injuries This article is about the fast growing technique of endurance running, which has evolved over the years significantly. Although it may seem like a bit trendy and popular, this particular type of running has its pros and cons. Due to the fact that endurance running includes a various amount of repetitive ground impact forces, it is not unlikely for one to develop a stress injury to the lower leg. In order to decrease the risk that comes along with endurance running, preventative measures should be enforced. When running some of the most common injuries that one may be at risk for are patellofemoral pain syndrome, tibial stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendonitis. But in this article, a new study suggests that Barefoot running contains the potential to promote the healing process, increase performance, and decrease injury rates. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The global electricity sector is now facing major challenges i.e. exponentially increasing electricity demand, fight against climatic changes and increasing trends towards massive urbanization. The first challenge of ever mounting demands results in continuous depletion of traditional power generation sources; these are centralized power generation like thermal power plants i.e. combustion (coal, oil, natural), nuclear power plants etc. and are not suited for environmental and cost issues. • 11. salem witchcraft trials cause and effect Essay In 1692 the area of Salem town and Salem village became very vulnerable to conflict. Severe weather such as hurricanes had damaged land and crops, the effects of King Phillips War began to impact New England society, and colonists were being forced off of the frontiers by Native peoples. The Church and the government were in heavy conflict. And those residing in Salembegan to grow suspicious of one another when some prospered and others hadn t (Marcus, p13). Suddenly people seemed very paranoid and soon residents were placing blame on one another and accusing each other of witchcraft. In a fifteen month period between 1691 and 1692 nearly twelve dozen people were accused of witchcraft in or near Salem (Norton, p8). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Relationships between people and families seemed to crumble in the light of hysteria as children accused parents and friends pointed out friends (Boyer, p67). Some confessed to witchcraft and saved their own lives, others refused to tarnish their names and proclaimed innocence to their grave. The fact that these people did not have freedom of speech and were proven guilty without any tangible evidence caused even more hysteria throughout New England. People realized that at anytime anyone of them could be pointed out and so the society fell even more. One can see the Salem witch trials as being an excessive representation of the social and economic changes taking place in New England at this time (Boyer, p67). Differences between those who accepted change and those who feared it are what divided the colony. The hanging of witches can be seen as the murder of difference or of change. Perhaps if they had not been so insecure about their methods of governing the colony, the Puritans wouldn t have felt threatened by the slightest change. It took nineteen innocent deaths for the leaders of Salem to even begin to see the wrong doing in their trials. The Salem witch trials of the 1690 s had an immense impact on American history. • 12. Analysis Of The Hunger Games In general, Stereotyping affect not only the youth of today but also other individuals. An individual can be stereotyped based on race, skin color, class warfare or gender. The book, The Hunger Games, which is now a well known movie, demonstrates how stereotyping can happen to any individual. In The Hunger Games, Katniss is affected by stereotypes. Being a citizen from District 12, her appearance and being a female affects the way the Capitol distinguishes her. District 12 is the poorest district in Panem and everyone expects for the tributes to act as savages and criminals. During the opening ceremonies, Katniss reminisces about the past tributes clothing. Since District 12 s principal industry is coal mining, the past tributes have attended the opening ceremony naked covered in black powder to represent coal dust or skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps (The Hunger Games 66). District 12 tributes are judged by the Capitol and the stylist judged them based on where they are from. The past stylists do not put any effort in designing their clothing since District 12 tributes already look worn out and dirty. Typically, everyone in the Capitol judges Katniss and Peeta because they are from a poorer side of Panem. By stereotyping, we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristics and abilities that we assume all members of that group have. It leads to social categorization which is one of the reasons for prejudice attitudes (Mclead). There are plenty of young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Afghanistan Today Is One Of The Most Violent And Unstable Afghanistan today is one of the most violent and unstable countries in the world and is economically and politically on its knees after decades of conflict. There are five main obstacles are preventing Afghanistan from developing, which are high levels of corruption, crime, insecurity, drug trafficking, and lawlessness (DFID, 2005). The current Afghan government is struggling to improve these issues despite receiving billions of dollars of foreign aid. The Talibangoverned Afghanistanfrom 1996 2001 after a devastating civil war and their rule was characterised by the wide spread human rights abuses (Okin, 1998) and the mismanagement of the economy, education system and health care system (Goodhand, 2000; Goodwin, 1998; Reyburn et al,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strict laws were implemented which resulted in criminal activity drastically reducing in the country (Rubin, 2000). Since the country had experienced years of conflict and lost its political institutions, the Taliban felt that the population would not be as responsive to lenient and moderate laws compared to strict laws that would reduce crime rates and act as deterrents (Hartley Blecic, 2000). The strategy was successful in terms of reducing crime levels, but the punishments were often harsh (Goodson, 2001). When the Taliban were ousted in 2001, criminal activity increased drastically with the return of organised crime gangs (Shaw, 2006). The Afghan government s attempts to tackle these problems have not been as successful as the Taliban in terms of reducing crime levels (REF). This is partly because the Afghan government has weak law enforcement and many corrupt government officials have links to the crime gangs (Smith, 2016). 2. Corruption Pre Taliban Afghanistan was plagued with corruption at all levels of society due to the weak rule of law of the almost non existent central government and the power of the many corrupt warlords that controlled most of the country (Payind, 1996; Rais, 1999). We all use language everyday; however literacy is the act of applying our knowledge of language. We use language to produce a range of modes for different purposes and audiences. Literacy is used to develop language and use it, for practical and purposeful situations and work. There is little use for possessing the knowledge of language if we cannot use and apply it in our everyday lives to gain knowledge and understanding (Kervin 2010). As educators, we must be aware that our knowledge of literacy and how we convey it to our children is an essential and ongoing process that is constantly adapting. Using several representative examples, consider how American writers (of any color) since the Civil War have addressed this problem. DuBois s quote, The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, tells a great deal of how Americans in general felt towards segregation each side had suspicions about the goings ons of the other race. Blacks had a stronger sense of such hesitency because of their history with Whites, and Whites were generally afraid of anything different than themselves, thus the enslavement. This caused many blacks to feel shame for their roots and ancestral past, and a small but powerful voice in their mind whispered the words that Hughes called the Racial Mountain: I want to be white . Many blacks at the time could not feel anything but shame for their past, and Hughes wanted the opposing outlook on that scale to feel pride in being black; to recognize the true beauty within themselves which is where true being, and true art, can begin to flower and flourish. DuBois s story The Veil shows a concept that is visible on many levels. The veil can be seen as the literal darker skin of the black people, which is an easy way to identitify any race from any other race. This physical trait allows for discrimination solely because it is the easiest thing to point out. The veil also explores the idea of the White s lack of acceptance of Blacks as Americans, let alone real Americans. The veil also covers the notion of the Blacks inability to see themselves outside of what America (White Americans) had described them as. Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddeness that I was different from the others; or like [them perhaps] in heart and life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil. Many people may believe that they had started off with just as many obligations as men, but that is not the case at all. Actually, it is the complete opposite, women had nothing when it came to the early days of the Gospel. That is until Jesus came around and changed things. Here we will discuss three very important details of women in the Gospels. We will discuss women in ancient Israel around the time of Jesus and how they were expected to act, then we will move on to Jesus radical treatment of women and how Jesus was technically, in today s definition, a feminist , finally we will discuss passages where Jesus apparently does not call for equality of the sexes. Jesus violated many of the Old Testament regulations, which specified gender inequality. He refused to follow the rules that were established by the three main religious groups of the day. Those three religious groups consisted of the Essenes, Pharisees and Sadducees. There are many examples on the Jesus radical treatment of women, one would include how he taught women students. Jewish tradition at the time was to not allow women to be taught. In Luke 10:38 42, he taught Mary, sister of Martha. Jesus also used terminology which treated women as equal to men. For example, in Luke 13:16 it describes how Jesus cured a women from a Satanic Spirit. He called her a daughter of Abraham, therefore implying that she had equal status with sons of Abraham. The book in the Bible is basically about the romance between a lover and his beloved. The language speaks of the love in a marriage relationship and the pursuing nature of the two lovers. There are many sections of the book Song of Songs ranging from, The Initial Pursuit and Satisfaction, to The Groaning of the Flesh and so on. Each of the sections cover certain verses from the Biblical text and include subsections on the interpretation of verses. The part of the book that touched me the most was in section two, on The Call for Deliverance from the Self, specifically, Failure and Recovery. This section speaks of how the beloved wants to dwell with her lover in his presence, living with the him and his benefits, but not wanting to change her ways to be closer to him. He treats the popes as though they are secular leaders who serve as examples of what a ruler should do to maintain power. He calls it corrupt. Machiavelli has two areas of criticism. The first area indicating Machiavelli s criticism of the papacy revolves around the expansion of the territory under control of the pope. He argues that, Alexander VI, who, more than all the other popes there have been, demonstrated how much a pope, using both money and arms, could get his own way (11, p. 37). Machiavelli depicts Pope Alexander VI almost despotically since Machiavelli sees the pope as being able to get whatever he wants by force or fortune. Machiavelli sees this as a trend in popes to follow such as Julius II who, had opportunities to accumulate money of a sort that had not existed before Alexander (11, p. 37). Machiavelli places a focus on the accumulation of wealth by the popes subtly implying that wealth was important for popes at that time. Machiavelli concludes his criticism of this procession of the popes by commenting that he hopes the new pope, Leo X, will increase that power but also make the Church worth of respect (11, p. 37 38). The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage (Mersky and Bogduk ed 1994). The physiological function of the painsensory system is protective in nature, to shield the body from actual or potential tissue damage. Pathological pain, on the other hand, is described as spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia, that persist for years or decades after all possible tissue healing has occurred (Coderre et al 1993). A common scenario for this occurrence is when peripheral tissue is subjected to exogenous injury, whether it be mechanical, chemical, or toxic. Injury results in localised increase in inflammatory mediators, leading to the sensitisation of nociceptors. Upregulation and increased expression of various membrane receptors is the most common mechanism. Ionotropic receptors, Gq protein coupled metabotropic receptors, Gs protein coupled metabotropic receptors, and mitogen activated protein kinase have been shown to be upregulated in nociceptors in response to the presence of inflammatory mediators (Sessle ed 2008). The resultant effect is increased conductance, lowered threshold for the initiation of action potentials, spontaneous depolarisation, and increased after discharges to supra threshold stimuli (Sessle ed 2008). Sprouting, or the growth of neuronal axons into the damaged tissue, also contributes to pathological pain. Increased number of nociceptive axons increases the opportunity for spatial and temporal summation and activation of nociceptors, which under normal conditions would not be activated. Sufficient concentration of inflammatory mediators can also lead to the activation of nociceptors which do not participate in the detection of noxious stimulus (Sessle ed 2008). Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We live in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn t be let out. We know it s happening, and even hear or see the events. But who s taking action? I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic? And this was exactly the case. Flashforward a few months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of domestic abuse. Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself. Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of the Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Gameswere sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His innovative idea was to uncover the present day Games in 1900 in his local Paris, however appoints from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to 1896 and have Athens serve as the main host. The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close by city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. This concept is conveniently backed by the elders of Naram SГ®m, who were successful in claiming that these attributes came in the form of being divine. This claim to divinity literally underpinned their ascension to power and the relegation of everyone else; rulers were to be revered for their beauty and power because it was truly their god given right. Alas, Winter argues that the sexual allure of the ruler s body firmly functions was a mechanism to continue aggrandizing their own status and dominance. Someone who wants to exert power to maintain himself as the custodian of this power, no matter the consequence, and loses self identity and worth over time. A mother, a wife, a father, a husband or a spouse have the power to influence others and these roles start to define the person himself. People have roles that define how they view themselves and why they are needed. As a result, if they exert this power to preserve the role no matter the consequence they end up destroying the relationships that defines their role from the very start. They start losing their own identity and focus on the role instead. Thus a mother may become more controlling and a spouse more jealous. They lose listening skills and empathy over time where trust degenerates. It is important that people do not become self absorbed in performing their role and the power associated with it because they start losing their identity and become mere actors of their role rather than living their lives fully. The crucial element in developing appropriate moral attitudes to the world around us is sympathy: the ability to recognize, interprets, and understands what another person is experiencing; the sympathetic person is pleased by the beneficial experiences of others and feels unease at harmful ones (Beard, 2014). However, some may believe that power granted by roles and family ties should be exerted in order to have a better structure of family and relationships, where boundaries are defined and secured. Fairness and rights are less important than loyalty and patriotism, sacred/profane issues of purity, temperance and obedience to authority (Fish, 2013).
