Most of us have probably seen the Old Spice commercials with the confident and fast talking Isaiah
Mustafa, AKA The Old Spice Man. These commercials first began in early 2010 and have since
become a whole series of some of the most popular commercials on television and the internet. But
what is it about these ads that make them so appealing? To answer this question, this paper will focus
on the commercial that started it all: The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. Although this ad does
surprisingly little to realistically describe the product it is advertising, its clever and difficult to notice
of all three first parts of appeal convinced many people to switch to Old Spice, and, at the same time
helped Old Spice reach a close connection with its target audience, this way embedding itself into our
popular culture.
Before getting into any analysis, I would like to give brief summary of how the ad goes forward.
Mustafa, in a bathroom wearing nothing but a towel, starts a speech which describes how anything is
possible when a man uses Old Spice body wash. In one continuous take, Mustafa moves from the

The two songs that I will be analyzing have many differences that I have come across while analyzing.
The first song is an Austrian folk song called Cuckoo . You can tell this is a folk song from the vivid
story telling in the lyrics that lead to a yodel. The second song is an American pop song called Can t
Help Falling in Love which was written by George David Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore and
made most famous by Elvis Presley for the album/soundtrack Blue Hawaii in 1961. The main

The two songs have different time signatures. Cuckoo has a compound meter with short and quick

introduced to society following the 1944 Education Act, this act divided schooling into primary and

both the environment and humans. Take for example E. Coli a well known bacteria that lives within
our intestines. This particular bacteria makes vitamins that we need in order to stay healthy. In this
experiment we analyzed the changes seen in bacteria when adding to differing DNA plasmids; pUC18
and lux. To arrive to the most accurate results possible we had to have the E. Coli bacteria made
permeable to the plasmids. So it was prepared with calcium chloride. One group of bacteria was given
the pUC18 plasmid, and the other group was given the lux as well as the pUC18 plasmids. We then
proceeded to incubate them in different containers. Some had ampicillin where as some had none.
This was done in order to observe the effect of pUC18, and lux growth patterns. A control with neither
plasmid was used to keep a basis for our experiments. Bacteria that had transformed and taken in the
lux plasmid without ampicilin were able to illuminate, and only bacteria that gained the pUC18 were
capable of surviving with ampicillin. The results observed reveal how foreign DNA can be adapted to
fit into another cell s DNA even incorporated to be an optimal part of the cell. This process makes it a

The Battle of Antietam took place on 17 September 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle was
fought between General Lee s Army of Northern Virginia and General McClellan s Army of the
Potomac. Although the battle lasted only 12 hours, it was a significant point of the American Civil
War, as well as the deadliest day in history. Tactically the battle was considered a draw, but the North
claimed strategic victory and President Lincoln published the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing
hundreds of thousands of slaves.

The Commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was General Robert E. Lee. General
Lee graduated second in his class from West Point in 1829 and served throughout the country, but is
best known for his leadership during the Mexican American War. General Lee believed in unity but
when the state of Virginia decided to secede from the Union in April 1861, Lee decided to stay with
Virginia. Confederate president Jefferson Davis asked Lee to serve as his senior military adviser and
General Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia on June 1, 1862.
LTG Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson graduated from West Point in 1846 and saw battle in the Mexican
American War. Jackson commanded the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and took his
wing into the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862.
MG James Longstreet graduated from West Point in 1842, ranking 54 out of a class of 56. Longstreet
served during the Mexican American War and throughout several battles during the American Civil
War. MG Longstreet commanded the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and led his wing

MG James E. B. Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854, spent much of his service with the 1st
Cavalry in Kansas. He was in charge of all of the cavalry for the Army of Northern Virginia and
