The Neurological and Behavioral Changes Associated with Learning Music as a Child
Some would argue that humans are intrinsically wired to produce music. As an infant, the sounds
children make while learning language mimic the tonal shape of language. Parents also tend to use
exaggerated highs and lows in their voices much like a simple melody to prepare and help develop the
infant s capacity to learn language. It has also been found that the neural networks used in language
acquisition are very similar to those used in music acquisition (Mithen 2006). Language acquisition
and development is imperative for an individual to survive, and if training the brain with music can
strengthen those networks, this is a subject of great importance. Since the 1940s doctors have
recognized the impacts of music on the behavior of patients with mental disabilities, and from this
discovery, the effects of music on a regular developing brain became a subject of great interest.
Researchers recognized that there was potentially an opportunity to increase brain development in
children resulting in discernable enhancements of skills into adulthood (Reschke Hernandez, 2011). It
is now known that childhood music education improves skills required for playing music, namely
motor functioning, auditory discrimination, and long and short term recall. These skills, learned
through music instruction, transfer to non musical skills such as verbal

The Soweto Uprising of 1976 an education Related Outcry by...
A system of legal separation amongst races dominated the Republic of South Africa, namely apartheid
between 1948 until 1993. Apartheid led to the separation and discrimination between whites against
people of colour. Not only was this racism commonly accepted between whites against blacks, but it
was also legally enforced as white s maintained priority in terms of housing, education, political
power and jobs. I will be examining a particular event, The Soweto Uprising of 1976 which was an
education related outcry by students. This event carries with it a great deal of importance as it was a
very powerful thing to impact South Africa and help in the deconstruction of the Apartheid
government.
A decree issued by the Bantu Education in 1976 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The number of students involved gathered up to around 10,000. On their way to the stadium, it was
reported that around fifty armed policemen stopped the students in an attempt to send them back.
Initially the policemen tried (but failed) to disperse the crowds by means of warning shots fired and
tear gas. The situation however took a severe turn as policemen instead began firing shots directly into
the crowd. While some students attempted to fight back by means of throwing stones, many simply
ran for cover.
Two students lost their lives from police gunfire that day, Hastings Ndlovu and Hector Pieterson while
hundreds of other students were treated for various degrees of injury during this outrageous chaos that
swarmed Soweto. These shootings lead to the almighty uprising that spread to over 100 urban and
rural areas all around South Africa.
An iconic photograph taken by Sam Nzima of a dying Hector Peterson was published in various
newspapers all around the world as well as reports on the brutal murders surrounding that day which
shocked and outraged the international community. Worse still, the South African security forces were
instructed to shoot to kill remaining protestors in the name of law and order . By night time, another

Religion In The Elizabethan Era
The two most prevalent religions in the Elizabethan era were Protestantism and Catholicism. When
Queen Mary came into power in 1553, she relentlessly sought out and executed those of the Protestant
belief. She maintained a deep belief in Catholicism until the day she died and Queen Elizabeth began
ruling. Unlike her half sister, Queen Elizabeth ruled the country under the religion of Protestantism.
Rather than mass murdering those who followed the Catholic religion, the Queen chose to make the
religion illegal and use the punishment of fines. This played a major role in why such a large number
of people were conflicted with the choice between their religion and their Queen. Similar issues can be
seen in the works that emerged in this era, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shakespeare s Hamlet depicts how Catholicism influences characters in their daily lives. When
Hamlet speaks to the ghost of his dead father, his father asks his son to remember [him] (1, 5, 25).
Catholics believe in the existence of Purgatory and old Hamlet s request represents this idea. As long
as people remember somebody who is stuck in Purgatory, they will arrive in Heaven. Before he dies,
Hamlet asks Horatio to draw [his] breath in pain to tell [his] story so that citizens would also
remember him (5, 2, 120). The belief in the space between Heaven and Hell is mentioned often
because Catholics also believe that repentance plays a part in where people end up after death.
Claudius reasons with himself that repentance is significant by questioning what can it not [do] when
he reflects on his past actions (3, 3, 70). Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of repenting through
the actions of his characters. This is further explored by Hamlet when he finally decides to kill
Claudius, but cannot because if he attempts to now...he [will go] to heaven because of the Catholic
belief that those who repent before death will go to Heaven. Hamlet references this when he explains
that [Claudius] took [his] father grossly, full of bread, with all his crimes broad blown, as flush as
May, which is the reason why Hamlet s father is stuck in

How Did British Airways Change
British Airways during the years has changed a lot, they had a lot of improvements and they made new
experiments and growths that made the future of this company to be different. In 1974 British Airways
was created with the combination of two companies the British Overseas Airways Corporation
(BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA).
In 1986 the airlines with long haul services were moved to the terminal 4 at Heathrow airport and in
1987 with the leadership Chairman Lord King was completed the privatization of British Airways. In
1988 British Airways was unite with Gatwick Airport based British Caledonian Airways.
In 1997 another companies from around the world made a new fleet of Airbus aircraft for short haul
services. They announced in 1999 about the new association.
In March 2008 terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport was opened by the queen and the new Airbus A380s

The rebels shipped the king off to Europe; the elite who remained in Egypt would suffer if not at first,
then later under the new regime s populist policies. Meanwhile, the peasants and urban poor
appreciated the coup, although because of the inadequacy of reforms and policies like the decision to
expand industry, their circumstances would be relieved only at the expense of growing debt and

In 1953 the military officers banned all political parties and abolished the monarchy. The officers were
eliminating potential rivals. Their one−time ally, President Naguib, was stripped of his powers, and
Nasser became the voice of Egypt, with Abd al−Hakim Amir in control of the army. Another former
ally, the Muslim Brotherhood, a 25−year−old grassroots Islamist party, was repressed by the new
regime after a Muslim Brother tried to assassinate Nasser in 1954. Nasser s government also put down
a worker s strike, and moved against the Communist Party and other leftists. In 1956 Nasser
nationalized the Suez Canal in response to the withdrawal of an expected loan from the World Bank
that year. The Egyptian masses applauded this seizure of Egypt s largest source of revenue, which had
been controlled by foreign powers since its construction under the local ruler, the khedive Isma il, in
the nineteenth century.

The Gun Show Loophole
Since the Brady Act was introduced in 1998, we know that there have been approximately two
hundred and thirty million background screenings done to date. However, imagine how many more
could have been completed if the right laws were in place for unlicensed dealers. The laws that are in
place today are lacking at best, therefore a major issue with purchasing these firearms happen at gun
shows, which is also known as the gun show loophole. In an article, written by Mark Duggan of the
MIT Press, states that THOUSANDS of gun shows take place in the United States each year. Gun
control advocates argue that the gun show loophole makes it easier for potential criminals to obtain a
gun; the loophole basically allows unlicensed vendors at gun shows to sell firearms without
conducting background checks on purchasers. (Duggan) A twenty one year old cannot even walk into
a bar or a liquor store and purchase alcohol without the proper identification, nevertheless someone
with a known criminal background or a person with a history of mental illness can walk straight into a
gun show and purchase deadly weapons without even flashing an identification card, but per our
government laws, that s completely legal.
Gun lobbyist continue to stand by their gun shows though, they cite a U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics
survey that found that 0.7% of state prison inmates that have ever owned a gun reported that they
obtained it at a gun show. (Duggan) The lobbyist main argument is that,

Critical Analysis Of The World Of Cooking By Boeuf...
This essay will first provide an analysis of a text, World of Cooking Boeuf Borgingnonne (see
suplementary materials) by focusing on the the theory and methods of the Russian Formalists. I will
then provide a brief critical discussion of the analysis and theory used.
To begin analysis I will look first at the device of linguistic sound The Formalists started out by seeing
the literary work as a more or less arbitrary assemblage of devices ... Devices included sound, imagery
, rhythm, syntax, meter, rhyme, narrative techniques, in fact the whole stock of formal literary
elements. (Khosravishakib 12). Therefor a criticism of device in the text is one of the most important
features of my analysis. The literary and poetic devices that are ... Show more content on

If my text, a recipe, a text of instruction not intended to be read for literariness can be examined, in
such fashion as Tolstoy, Gogol or Sterne, albeit loosely or satirically, then what use is the method of
formalism for the texts for which it was concieved? Due to my choice of text I have proven that
Formalism for the must part is a greatly unsatisfactory method of analysis of literariness. Literature
cannot, as I have demonstrated in my analysis be defined purely on the the technical effects within in
it. That is not to say that literature should not demonstrate or my accessed on technicalities. The poet
or writer or playwright should engage in art as a technique while also demonstrating that technique
must be a tool for the representation of ideas, philosophy, emotion within a context or framework
extrinsic to the text. Texts of any sort need a context in order to be understood, I found great irony in
the opening lines of Nicholas Warner s essay In Search of Literary Science the Russian Formalist
Tradition, In order to appreciate the astonishing sophistication of Russian Formalist theory, and,
indeed, even to understand what the Russian Formalists were about, we first need to understand the
critical context in which Russian Formalism developed (70). This is a non literary text (though in
theory one could debate otherwise) that much is granted, but the fact remains that context is not a
factor in needed in understanding the text in terms of literariness for the Russian Formalists. I have
noted through much of the essays on Formalism that perception, which is a thread of understanding, is
a key factor. In this case a critical context should be taken into account in all texts in order to provide a
means of

The Relation Between Cognition And Language
The relation between cognition and language has been a curious topic for many decades now.
Cognition plays a dynamic role within linguistic expression
Most of current discussion in layman s crowd is on a speaker s ability to impart influence on an
audience. We study the power of language in propaganda. We look at the sway that specific words
have on an individual s emotions.
Linguistic scholars have looked into the opposite the influence of words on the speaker.
Around the world there are almost 8000 languages spoken. Unsurprisingly, with this range come
significant differences in what is spoken and understood in each language, from information conveyed
by each word to what kind of informative words are even included in the language.
So how does one s language influence one s thoughts? This question has been disputed since the Sapir
Whorf hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity hypothesis, implicated that a language s features
determines its speaker s thoughts. (danza) the idea dated centuries back, but this was the first
substantial hypothesis, formed during 1930 s based on the thoughts of two linguists Edward Sapir and
Benjamin Lee Whorf.
Language seems to invade daily mental processes more so than previously expected. Because
language pervades everything we do in labeling colors, counting numbers, adjectives, and verbs,
simple tasks become hard to accomplish without using the language faculty. Examples would be far
and few in between where thinking does not

Reactions And Reactions Of Redox Reactions
Introduction:
Without the millions of chemical reactions that occur every day, life would be completely different.
An important class of common reactions includes those which involve the simultaneous transfer of
electrons between chemicals, commonly referred to as redox reactions or oxidation reduction
reactions. Redox reactions are whole reactions composed of two different half reactions known as
oxidation (where electrons are lost) and reduction (where electrons are gained) (Chemguide, 2013).
When there is an increase in the oxidation state, the reaction is oxidation; when there is a decrease, it
is reduction. Oxidation cannot possibly occur without an affiliated reduction, and vice versa. Redox
reactions are notated as such:
Cu(s)  Cu2+ + 2e
In the half reaction above, a copper ion (with a plus 2 charge) is formed from the oxidation of solid
copper (with no charge). The e in the equation is an electron which is free to reduce other chemical
atoms, such as in the half reaction:
2Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s)
Two electrons are added to the two silver ions in this half reaction, in order to produce a solid silver.
These two half reactions can be combined to form a redox equation as follows:
Cu(s)  Cu2+(aq) + 2e
2 Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s)
Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) + 2e
OR
Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq)  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s)

St. Philip Neri s Feast Day
St. Philip is an interesting person. St. Philip Neri s feast day is May 26 1595. He was born in Florence,
Italy one July 21 1515. He passed away one May 26 1595. His symbols are a rosary, lily, and an angel
holding a book. The rosary means that he was devoted to Mary mother of Jesus. The lily means that he
symbolizes purity of heart and soul. The angel holding a book means that he symbolized freedom,
purity, faith, and love. St. Philip Neri was officially recognized as saint or beatified in the year 1615
and canonized in the year 1622. At the age of 18 he decided to commit his life to God. While he was
praying in the catacombs at St Sebastiano a globe of light entered his mouth and moved to his heart.

Jazmine Sullivan Masterpiece
At some point, we ve all critiqued ourselves on how a part of our body is not what we want it to be.
But when we re confident, we discover how beautiful and artistically our body can be. Jazmine
Sullivan creatively expresses how she s a work of art, a Masterpiece, to be exact. As I listen to the
soulful, confidence building track called Masterpiece, I can t help but want to show the world exactly

message geared towards self empowerment.
Whether you re male or female, in today s world image is everything. More often than not, someone
can relate to either being bullied for being different or having had an issue with body shaming. We ve

We were in Irvine that day for a soccer tournament. I played defense at the time and enjoyed playing

When I got to my team, I set my bag down and did the stretches our coach, Wendi, wanted us to do. I

to the fact that...well hello?! We re a team and teams are supposed to talk to each other, not make their

The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (HGP) began in 1990 with funding from the Department of Energy and
the National Institutes of Health with the goal of decoding the human genome. Researchers from
across the world are working in conjunction to understand the sequence of amino acid base pairs and
how they interact with one another to elicit specific genetic reactions. Once the decoding of the
genome takes place, scientists will be able to develop individual treatment plans and understand a
number of diseases. Research has found that there are over 3 billion amino acid base pairs which make
up 20,000 genes. Of these 20,000 genes, the human genetic code is defined by forty six tightly packed
bunches called chromosomes. Due to the vast array of amino acid base pairs, the project has taken
over ten years to complete the sequencing of the specific parts, but the task of understanding how the
parts interact one another and the influence they have on diseases has yet to be accomplished. The
genetic material in chromosomes defines human attributes and is developed from proteins. Proteins
are a series of amino acids, which are strung together, and the unique combination of nucleic acids (A,
T, C, and G) in the protein give specific directions to the cell to produce certain combinations of
amino acids. This process creates proteins varying in form and function based upon the series of
amino acids. The differing proteins cause numerous actions in the body to be carried out, and are

Foreshadowing In The Scarlet Ibis

Short Story Literary Analysis Essay James Hurst wrote The Scarlet Ibis. This a depressing short story
about a child who is born disabled. He faces many problems, one of them being his narcissistic older
brother. The Scarlet Ibis gives outstanding examples of foreshadowing, symbolization, and theme. To
begin with, foreshadowing is one of the many literary elements in this short story. For instance, the
child was born in a caul with many problems. The narrator explains how the child is a great ordeal to
everyone. A casket is built as a result of the non belief in the child s life. James Hurst vividly describes
this sinister scenery of death by saying The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia
petals and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox (Hurst 462). With his disabilities no character
in the short story is expecting the child to live long. By saying all of this, and giving all of this
information, Hurst is practically just telling the reader that the ... Show more content on

A symbol represents something other than itself. Hurst demonstrates an elaborate use of symbolization
between the Ibis, a bird, and Doodle, the child. Both the Ibis and Doodle where in some senses born
alone. The narrator states this by saying He was born when I was six and was, from the outset, a
disappointment (Hurst 462). Both are fragile in the sense that both are easily vulnerable to their
surroundings, and easily susceptible to death. When doodle dies his older brother notices the
similarities between the Ibis and Doodle; Doodle died like the scarlet ibis, almost exactly the same, as
they both died in a storm. As Doodle s body lay lifeless amid the swamp, the narrator recognizes the
blood trickling out of Doodle s mouth and how the blood resembles the pristine scarlet color if the
ibis. This shows how the ibis is a symbol of

Comparing Philbrick s View Of Different Authors Contributions
Despite Philip s tremendous experience with selling land to the English, Philbrick unfairly portrays the
king as as an indecisive ruler and poor decision maker. For over a decade the Wampanoag ruler had
been the intermediary for native land sales to English proprietors. As Philbrick explains, any Pilgrim
man wishing to obtain native land was required to make the purchase through the official Plymouth
court, thereby preventing unfair sales (like alcohol for land) that the Indians could later dispute. One
would imagine that in dealing only with the officials, as opposed to the men purchasing the land,
Philip would be granted greater protection from any one of the potential abuses that he could suffer
from. But instead, Philbrick recounts how, by monopolizing the purchase of Indian lands, Plymouth
officials kept the prices they paid artificially low (171). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Philip, who had his own animal herd, would have been aware of the uncontrollable factors that were
also at play, such as the unhappiness which arose when English cows and horses grazed on Indian

with the inevitable and growing threat English settlements posed to his people. Yet instead of
attempting to appease the Indians by granting them permission to go on wild, ineffective raids, which
would have only motivated the English, Philip waited until he could gather an effective, armed, multi
tribe force before he waged war. By delaying his response and refusing to allow personal vendettas be

The Life of Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria Hungary. On June 28, 1914, Ferdinand and his wife,
Sophie, were visiting Sarajevo when the two were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the
Serbian terrorist group, the Black Hand. After several failed attempts from members of the Black
Hand that day, the members were running out of hope. However, due to a communication problem
with the driver of Ferdinand and his wife s car, they were forced to turn around in an alley that Princip
was hidden in. Two shots later, the pair was dead within minutes and Austria Hungary was ready to
make Serbian s pay for what they did. Archduke Franz Ferdinand s assassination had different effects

The Serbian nationalists were not only a main cause of Franz Ferdinand s assassination but of World
War I too. The Serbian nationalists were the main cause of Franz Ferdinand s assassination and aided
in the start of World War I. After the Austria Hungary Empire annexed Bosnia Herzegovina, the
country of Serbia encouraged Serbians living there to rebel against Austria Hungarian rule in frequent
protests and civil disturbances (Pendergast 16). The Serbians began to fight for independence against
rule of Austria Hungary which led to the assassination of the Archduke of the Austria Hungary
Empire, Franz Ferdinand. The Black Hand was the terrorist group that murdered Franz Ferdinand and
his wife, Sophie. Not only was it led by Colonel Dragutin Dimitrijevic, the head of Serbian military
intelligence but Austria s Serbian ambassador is said to have known about the assassination
beforehand (Pendergast 21). Serbian s were sick of being ruled in an empire, so militant groups like
the Black Hand, wanted to untie the Slavic people in an independent pan Slavic state (Pendergast 45).
They were determined to put all the Slavic people together as a separate nationality and destroyed
people who got in their way, including Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of the Austria Hungary Empire.
With Franz Ferdinand being the heir to the Austria Hungarian throne, the Austria Hungarian Empire
began to call for a war against the Serbians but needed allies in order to have a chance of winning.

Legal Issues Over The Legal System
The career that I chose to focus on was legal area as far as becoming an attorney that practices family
and criminal court. I chose this area of study because I have become interested in legal issues over the
past few years that lead me to the decision to practice law. Upon deciding what I wanted to do with
my career, I then decided that I want to first start out as a lawyer and then progress to becoming a
judge where I plan on retiring from. I decided I would rather practice criminal law and family law as a
prosecutor rather than becoming a defense attorney. I don t feel that my arguments are strong enough
to be a defense attorney and do plan on working on those skills for improvement. However I am a firm
believe that justice served is the main reason individuals lean to the legal system for help. During my
research for my chosen career I found an article that allowed me to look deeper into the legal system.
The article focuses on the importance of the local common law in resolving various related disputes
(Decker, 2014). Topics discussed include relationship between the local common law with the
customs, social norms and local legal culture, role of the local courts of the U.S. in the construction,
implementation and enforcement of the common law and relationship between the common law and
access to justice (Decker, 2014). It further discusses the importance of the legal scholarship in
construction of the common law (Decker, 2014). After reading this article it basically

Factors Affecting Nigerias Underdevelopment
According to an economist the idea of development is a situation whereby there is an increase in a
nations GNP and GDP, leading to an increase in growth .but to a sociologist this is a surface definition
as development or rather a country is regarded as developed when such increase is affecting the living
condition of its people even to the smallest group in the society. Where we don t only calculate
numbers and figures and structures but can see the positive change of things in the life of the people,
both the rich, average and poor. Then such a society would be regarded as developed. For example the
living conditions of the USA.

Neo colonialism or imperialism
This is an external factor of Nigeria s underdevelopment; it is the highest form of exploitation from
the British countries to their colonies after independence. Nigeria has contributed to its economic
backwardness, as it promotes the maintenance of foreign domination and enhances neo colonialism
and the flowering of subjugationism (onimode, 1981). Imperialism has always been an exploitative
phenomenon, which was the initial motive for colonization. Nigeria has been seen as a dumping
ground for most British counties, making it difficult for us to produce our own goods. Also the fact
that we are primary producers with fewer technicalities to produce our raw materials into finished
products makes it a means of imperialism as we export our goods at the rate determined by the British
colonies and still import back at a higher cost. For example the crude oil, Nigeria is the largest country
with the crude oil but the poorest in economic state due lack of technicality in transforming crude oil
into petrol which led to the issue of sucidy removal in January 1st 2012, even after which things haven
t changed as fuel scarcity hits most part of the country e.g. Abuja, Lagos etc. as at 19th September
2012.
3. Poor leadership

influence but also inspiration . The idea of Nigeria s leadership is just based on selfish gain of eating

Dangers Of Teenagers In The Malls
Malls are not protected. This is an issue that needs to be resolved in the near future. Though not very
pondered, mall safety is a large concern in this country. Many people are unsuspecting of the dangers
when going to the mall. Teenagers should be watched by an adult until they turn eighteen. By being
accompanied by a guardian or an adult, teenagers are less likely to act out or cause trouble. A constant
eye will discourage any unorderly behavior. If the teenagers in the mall the day they set off those
firecrackers had been watched by an adult, there s a high chance that never would have happened.
Teenagers can be influenced to do the right thing just as much as as they can be influenced to do bad.
It s simply better to have any teen under the age of eighteen need to be watched. Malls will be much
calmer if this simple task is enforced in all malls. The adult should be responsible for the teenagers
and their behavior. This will serve as an incentive for the adult to keep the teenagers tame. The adult
along with the teenagers would receive the same consequences. Teenagers attending the mall will have
little to no outlet to misbehave. This within itself eradicates some worry mall goers may have
concerning their trip to the mall. It s a fact: teenagers make dumb decisions and do dumb things! It
was definitely a dumb choice to set off fireworks in the mall. Though the teenagers were probably just
wanting to fool around, they caused mass panic and wreaked havoc on that day.

Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History Analysis
History has always been heavily dominated by men, and for women to earn a spot in history means
that they would need to do something extraordinary. In Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History,
by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, she points out several famous women in history that fit the mold of
extraordinary. Through discussing Mae West, Rosa Parks, and Martha Ballard, Ulrich makes the claim
that women rarely make history unless they have broken away from the norms of their society. By
explaining the individual historical cases and her own opinion, accompanied by visual representations
of her view, Ulrich argues how history dictates who gets a spot in history and who gets forgotten.
However, a place in history depends on how out of the ordinary ... Show more content on

Ulrich talks about herself and how one quote basically made her famous. The title Well Behaved
Women Seldom Make History, has become a well known slogan and has been used on several bumper
stickers, mugs, T shirts, and more. At the end of her essay, Ulrich concludes, Some history making is
intentional; much of it is accidental (Ulrich 665). This statement reflects how Ulrich gained her
popularity, which was completely accidental. Having a quote plastered everywhere is not something
that was planned, it just happened. Therefore, Ulrich is basically saying that her part in history was an
accident. Not only this, but Ulrich also makes a point at the very end of her essay by including a quote
from Gerda Lerner that discusses how our lives are like stories. Ulrich adds, But if no one cares about
these stories, they do not survive. People do not make history by living their lives, but by creating
records and by turning other people s lives into books or slogans (Ulrich 665). Basically, not
everything one person does will be seen as intriguing, only those who have captivating life
experiences will go down in history. Altogether, the use of self reference in her essay helps provide

Confessional Poetry Of Sylvia Plath
In the early 20th century, the Modernist philosophical movement dominated literature. Despite the
maturity of the topics the world faced during the time, literature erred on the conservative side and
avoided personal issues such as depression, sexuality, and trauma. In the 1950 s, however, Sylvia Plath
emerged to spearhead a new era of writing in the form of Confessional poetry. Plagued with
depression, suicidal tendencies, and trauma tied to her father s death, Plath explored these taboo
themes in her poetry. Alongside a few other influential writers of the period, Plath s intense and
intimate poems hailed the start of a revolutionary literature movement ( A Brief Guide to Confessional
Poetry ). Death, victimization, and a negative father complex were the leading themes in Plath s life,
and inspired much of her work, including the poems The Colossus, and Daddy. Sylvia Plath s parents
met when her father, a renowned German professor named Otto, taught Sylvia s mother, Aurelia at
Boston University. Born on October 27, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, Sylvia Plath had an ordinary
childhood, but the peace was broken in 1934 when Otto fell ill with an advanced stage of diabetes. He
died five years later on November 5, 1940 ( Sylvia Plath Biography ). Otto s death profoundly
traumatized Sylvia, aged eight at the time; upon hearing of his death, Plath said, I shall never talk to
God again. (O Connor). Plath, simultaneously a depressed but dazzling student, developed a talent

The Law Of Unfair Terms Of Consumer Contracts
The law of unfair terms in consumer contracts have experienced changes over the years, the most
significant of which was the Consumer Rights Act which came into effect on October 1st 2015.
However, before the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA 2015), unfair terms in consumer contracts were
covered under two pieces of legislation; the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977(UCTA 1977) and the
Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 (UTCCR 1999) . The UCTA 1977 and
UTCCR 1999 provided liability for transactions occurring in the course of a business as well as
business and consumer contracts. Both UCTA 1977 and UTCCR 1999 provided protection for
consumers from terms in a contract so as to prevent them from being at a disadvantage for not read
contractual terms and conditions. The UCTA 1977 defined a consumer under s.12 (1) (a); as a party
dealing not in the course of a business and not holding himself to do so; while in s12 (1) (b) the other
party is acting in the course of a business. The UTCCR s definition was very narrow, Regulation 3
stated that a consumer must be a natural person that is not a legal person e.g. a company who contracts
outside his business.
The UCTA 1977 was a primary legislative whereas the UTCCR 1999 are an implementation of the
European Court s Directive on Unfair terms in Consumer Contracts. Both the UCTA and UTCCR
covered nearly all forms of contracts and one of their most important functions was limiting the

A Day With Chemical Compounds
After a cup of bold Italian espresso and in the later hours of Sunday morning, our neighbor came from
across the street and tentatively knocked on our door. Without saying good morning she launched in, I
was upstairs in my son s room, putting away his laundry at about 9:15 when I heard a crash. I looked
out the window and noticed something going in your kitchen. I was worried. Is everyone all right?
Still foggy, I invited her in and began to recount the previous day s chaotic series of events. The
incident took place in our Townhome on the evening of Saturday, September 12. I was settled on the
couch, feeling overwhelmed with the immensity of the homework that I needed to complete. As my

had tried and the benefits of agave versus honey. Fatigued girls started to get balmy and began to
move more rapidly about the kitchen, dancing and flinging their arms around.
Without warning, I heard the sound of something shattering and looked up to see my sister with a
sheepish grin on her face. Her friends startled for a moment and froze with blank expressions. And
then realizing the damage that had been done, they scurried out of the kitchen. My sister had hurled
her arm in the direction of the coffee maker, setting it off balance. She managed to catch the coffee

Effect Of Mozart Effect On Pop Culture
Introduction
Music is everywhere. It has been a fundamental factor in the evolution of culture since the beginning
of time. Both the invention of the gramophone and the radio and the attempt to market these to the
masses in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s, the culture of music has been assimilated more and more
into life. Now the earth as a culture has become intertwined with each other through the development
of the Internet and the establishment of it in everyday life. Due to this development, music has only
become more accessible and portable to the public. A person can just pull out their phone and listen to

effect has become so popular that entire businesses have been built on the concept. (Bangerter Heath,
2004) Still, the idea has garnered mix reactions from the scientific community. Many have found that
the effect is short lived and temporary, while others point to flaws in experimental designs as a
fundamental factor. (Thompson, 2015) It is critical to evaluate this claim in order to understand if
there actually are intellectual benefits of music. As it stands right now, if this theory is correct, the
integration of classical music into education and work may boost proficiency of both students and
workers.
This paper will cover several topics: The advantages of listening to music while working; the
disadvantages of listening to music while working; and a general probe into the integrity of the Mozart
Effect. This paper must be split up into these sections as the Mozart Effect focuses specifically on
listening to music before testing, rather than during. I believe that classical music under the right
circumstances may help with concentration, and may play a temporary role in intelligence boosting as

Fundamental Analysis of Pharmaceutical Stocks
Fundamental Analysis
Fundamental analysis is a technique that attempts to determine a security s value by focusing on
underlying factors that affect a company s actual business and its future prospects. On a broader scope,
you can perform fundamental analysis on industries or the economy as a whole. The term simply
refers to the analysis of the economic well being of a financial entity as opposed to only its price
movements.
Fundamental analysis serves to answer questions, such as:

The And The Creative Industry Essay
Introduction
In today s era of regular internet downloads and the easy access to illegal films and music, the creative
industry has struggled, (BBC.co.uk, 2016). Due to this, money has increased for live performances
and cinema to try and ensure money is still being made by the industry,(MakeUseOf, 2016). What are
the other options for platforms and how are they surviving? One method is the pay what you want
model. Pay what you want (or PWYW) is a payment model where buyers pay their desired amount for
a given product, sometimes for the price of zero. In some cases, a minimum (floor) price may be set,
and/or a suggested price may be indicated as guidance for the buyer. The buyer can also select an
amount higher than the standard price for the artists work,(En.wikipedia.org, 2016). The Pay what you
want payment model is being used over numerous business platforms; from restaurants (Coldwell,
2016) to theatre companies (Gardner, 2016) are utilising the payment method.
In October 2007 Radiohead released their in rainbows album using the pay what you want model.
They gave their fans the freedom to pay whatever they wanted for their album including £0, this was
the first of its kind for a major act and it ended up outselling its previous studio album,
(En.wikipedia.org, 2016).

Relations Between Russia And The United States
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own and operate a business in Russia? As
Americans, we pretty much know the ins and outs of business there us operations in the United States,
even if one has never owned a business; it is already implied. What are the key differences in business
between Russia and the United States? Politics in business is apparent in America, but what about in
Russia? To what extent does the Russian government interfere in business, if at all? The laws of
business may be as different as night and day between the two countries. Russian and American
cultures are definitely different, but what roles do the two cultures play in business? Language
differences are most certainly a barrier when running a business in Russia, as an American. Where
there are politics, there is also corruption, despite which country one is conducting business in. Is there
a considerable difference, though, between the two governments and levels of corruption? These are
questions a person must ask themselves if they are to consider running a business outside of their
native country. We are going to use Russia as an example in this experiment to see what the
differences are, if any, between the two powerhouse nations in the world of business. Many officials at
the top of the Russian political ladder do not seem to think the economy in Russia is stable enough to

Hamlet Laertes Personality
Shakespeare s plays contain many types of characters. In Hamlet Laertes is absent throughout most of
the play. However, he still has a complex personality. At times, Laertes s actions are caused by
differing traits and, therefore create conflicting outcomes such as, a loved sister and the death of many.
Nevertheless, these characteristics are what make him himself. Laertes often becomes angry which
sometimes leads him to action without thought, but he is caring, loyal and, religious to an extent.
Laertes often lets his anger consume him sometimes causing him to act before knowing all the details.

His love for Ophelia is obvious in many ways. Before leaving for France, Laertes talks with his sister
about Hamlet. He warns her that the Prince s love for her is most likely a fleeting emotion. He
continues, saying that even if his feelings are true, it doesn t matter because he will marry for the
kingdom, not for love: His will is not his own (1,3,17). He warns her not only so she won t get hurt,
but also so she doesn t ruin her future. However, his most obvious act of love comes after her death.
He leaps into her grave so that he may hold her once more: Hold of the earth awhile till I have caught
her once more in mine arms (5,1,252 252). How much Laertes cares for Ophelia is very obvious and
present through the whole play but, his care and loyalty for others does have an extent. He shows
loyalty to his father by avenging his death. He goes so far to say he would kill Hamlet in the church if
the opportunity presented itself. While Laertes loyalty to his father is not seen until his father s death,
his loyalty to the king is presented much earlier. It is first shown when he came to Denmark to show

Hamlet. However, this loyalty is questionable because when Laertes is dying, he contradicts himself

The Popularity of Preschool and Headstart Programs
The parents of today s society are signing up their children for preschool and head start programs
more than ever. About seventy five percent of the nation s four year old attend a preschool center, as
do fifty percent of three year olds. (Barnett, 2008, page 3). Preschool has long been though to shape a
child s academic life, putting a child ahead of the curve in kindergarten and leading them into a
successful school career. The primary reason for attending preschool in past decades was the known
benefits of socialization, but preschool has changed a lot over the years putting much more emphasis
on cognitive development. Gone are the days when children only focused on colors, shapes, and
numbers. Today s preschoolers are learning music and second languages. Questions still remain about
how successful these programs are when it comes to preparing children for their future academic
careers. This paper will examine the known advantages and disadvantages of sending a child off to
preschool as well as what qualities a preschool should have. Quality of Care Research has shown that
the true benefits of preschool programs are heavily dependent upon the setting and environment in
which the learning is taking place. Choosing the correct school is crucial for proper learning and
development in preschool aged children. In order to obtain successful outcomes preschools and other
types of head start programs should be of high quality, meaning they have experienced teacher

The Importance Of Imperialism In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of...
It has been argued that humans are mere products of their environment. In the era of imperialism,
artists argued that the nations were breeding grounds for corruption and greed. To illustrate this,
several artists, such as Joseph Conrad, utilized the victimized frontiers to display the injustices that
were happening. Conrad s Heart of Darkness uses the African environment s wildness and symbolic
darkness to demonstrate that imperialism s lack of moral restraints will result in one s environment
exploiting the evils hidden in their heart.
A symbol itself, the Congo River served as a catalyst that carried Marlow s idealistic mindset into the
heart of the dark jungle. In the river, one found that they were bewildered and cut off from everything
[they] had known once because the waterway ran on... into the gloom of overshadowed distances ,
which resulted in moments when one s past came back... in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream
(Conrad 61). Marlow s prejudiced mindset against the natives originally presented an imperialistic
mindset of saving subhumans, however, his ideas clashed with an enigma of the living past, which
warped all ideas of reality. The Congo river blurred Marlow s reality to present the ultimate point that
imperialistic enlightenment could not compete with the deep rooted cultures of Africa s past. Although
Marlow initially took interest in Africa because of its blank space as the place where the merry dance
of death and trade goes on , he had to

Whale Hunting In America Case Study

In America, it is believed that whales and dolphins are mammals who are intelligent, are capable of
learning, and should have the right to be free (Brain Power). Because of this, and as a superpower, the
U.S. is able to use their economic influence to ban the killing of these mammals (Culture and
Globalization). Norway and Japan, whose fishing and whale hunting traditions go back centuries,
believe they should have an exemption from this whale hunting ban on cultural grounds, especially
since the whales they hunt are not endangered and therefore there should not be an environmental

these activities for centuries. Furthermore, these activities would not have undergone drastic changes

**Does the economic impact of whaling on the small fishing villages weigh into your decision?**
The economic impact of whaling on small fishing villages is an important consideration because a
complete ban of these activities could completely devastate the local economy. Unless there is an
alternative to which they can easily transition as well as help from the nation s government. Perhaps,
the national government could offer incentives (monetary or not), to the people who transition to a

  • 2. The Neurological And Behavioral Changes Associated With... Sarah Walker Gordon Deecker INSC 3909 December 14, 2015 The Neurological and Behavioral Changes Associated with Learning Music as a Child Some would argue that humans are intrinsically wired to produce music. As an infant, the sounds children make while learning language mimic the tonal shape of language. Parents also tend to use exaggerated highs and lows in their voices much like a simple melody to prepare and help develop the infant s capacity to learn language. It has also been found that the neural networks used in language acquisition are very similar to those used in music acquisition (Mithen 2006). Language acquisition and development is imperative for an individual to survive, and if training the brain with music can strengthen those networks, this is a subject of great importance. Since the 1940s doctors have recognized the impacts of music on the behavior of patients with mental disabilities, and from this discovery, the effects of music on a regular developing brain became a subject of great interest. Researchers recognized that there was potentially an opportunity to increase brain development in children resulting in discernable enhancements of skills into adulthood (Reschke Hernandez, 2011). It is now known that childhood music education improves skills required for playing music, namely motor functioning, auditory discrimination, and long and short term recall. These skills, learned through music instruction, transfer to non musical skills such as verbal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Soweto Uprising of 1976 an education Related Outcry by... A system of legal separation amongst races dominated the Republic of South Africa, namely apartheid between 1948 until 1993. Apartheid led to the separation and discrimination between whites against people of colour. Not only was this racism commonly accepted between whites against blacks, but it was also legally enforced as white s maintained priority in terms of housing, education, political power and jobs. I will be examining a particular event, The Soweto Uprising of 1976 which was an education related outcry by students. This event carries with it a great deal of importance as it was a very powerful thing to impact South Africa and help in the deconstruction of the Apartheid government. A decree issued by the Bantu Education in 1976 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The number of students involved gathered up to around 10,000. On their way to the stadium, it was reported that around fifty armed policemen stopped the students in an attempt to send them back. Initially the policemen tried (but failed) to disperse the crowds by means of warning shots fired and tear gas. The situation however took a severe turn as policemen instead began firing shots directly into the crowd. While some students attempted to fight back by means of throwing stones, many simply ran for cover. • 4. Religion In The Elizabethan Era The two most prevalent religions in the Elizabethan era were Protestantism and Catholicism. When Queen Mary came into power in 1553, she relentlessly sought out and executed those of the Protestant belief. She maintained a deep belief in Catholicism until the day she died and Queen Elizabeth began ruling. Unlike her half sister, Queen Elizabeth ruled the country under the religion of Protestantism. Rather than mass murdering those who followed the Catholic religion, the Queen chose to make the religion illegal and use the punishment of fines. This played a major role in why such a large number of people were conflicted with the choice between their religion and their Queen. When Hamlet speaks to the ghost of his dead father, his father asks his son to remember [him] (1, 5, 25). Catholics believe in the existence of Purgatory and old Hamlet s request represents this idea. As long as people remember somebody who is stuck in Purgatory, they will arrive in Heaven. Before he dies, Hamlet asks Horatio to draw [his] breath in pain to tell [his] story so that citizens would also remember him (5, 2, 120). The belief in the space between Heaven and Hell is mentioned often because Catholics also believe that repentance plays a part in where people end up after death. Claudius reasons with himself that repentance is significant by questioning what can it not [do] when he reflects on his past actions (3, 3, 70). Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of repenting through the actions of his characters. This is further explored by Hamlet when he finally decides to kill Claudius, but cannot because if he attempts to now...he [will go] to heaven because of the Catholic belief that those who repent before death will go to Heaven. However, imagine how many more could have been completed if the right laws were in place for unlicensed dealers. The laws that are in place today are lacking at best, therefore a major issue with purchasing these firearms happen at gun shows, which is also known as the gun show loophole. In an article, written by Mark Duggan of the MIT Press, states that THOUSANDS of gun shows take place in the United States each year. Gun control advocates argue that the gun show loophole makes it easier for potential criminals to obtain a gun; the loophole basically allows unlicensed vendors at gun shows to sell firearms without conducting background checks on purchasers. This essay will first provide an analysis of a text, World of Cooking Boeuf Borgingnonne (see suplementary materials) by focusing on the the theory and methods of the Russian Formalists. If my text, a recipe, a text of instruction not intended to be read for literariness can be examined, in such fashion as Tolstoy, Gogol or Sterne, albeit loosely or satirically, then what use is the method of formalism for the texts for which it was concieved? Due to my choice of text I have proven that Formalism for the must part is a greatly unsatisfactory method of analysis of literariness. Literature cannot, as I have demonstrated in my analysis be defined purely on the the technical effects within in it. That is not to say that literature should not demonstrate or my accessed on technicalities. The poet or writer or playwright should engage in art as a technique while also demonstrating that technique must be a tool for the representation of ideas, philosophy, emotion within a context or framework extrinsic to the text. Texts of any sort need a context in order to be understood, I found great irony in the opening lines of Nicholas Warner s essay In Search of Literary Science the Russian Formalist Tradition, In order to appreciate the astonishing sophistication of Russian Formalist theory, and, indeed, even to understand what the Russian Formalists were about, we first need to understand the critical context in which Russian Formalism developed (70). This is a non literary text (though in theory one could debate otherwise) that much is granted, but the fact remains that context is not a factor in needed in understanding the text in terms of literariness for the Russian Formalists. I have noted through much of the essays on Formalism that perception, which is a thread of understanding, is a key factor. • 10. The Relation Between Cognition And Language The relation between cognition and language has been a curious topic for many decades now. Cognition plays a dynamic role within linguistic expression Most of current discussion in layman s crowd is on a speaker s ability to impart influence on an audience. We study the power of language in propaganda. We look at the sway that specific words have on an individual s emotions. Linguistic scholars have looked into the opposite the influence of words on the speaker. Around the world there are almost 8000 languages spoken. Unsurprisingly, with this range come significant differences in what is spoken and understood in each language, from information conveyed by each word to what kind of informative words are even included in the language. So how does one s language influence one s thoughts? This question has been disputed since the Sapir Whorf hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity hypothesis, implicated that a language s features determines its speaker s thoughts. (danza) the idea dated centuries back, but this was the first substantial hypothesis, formed during 1930 s based on the thoughts of two linguists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf. Language seems to invade daily mental processes more so than previously expected. Because language pervades everything we do in labeling colors, counting numbers, adjectives, and verbs, simple tasks become hard to accomplish without using the language faculty. • 11. Reactions And Reactions Of Redox Reactions Introduction: Without the millions of chemical reactions that occur every day, life would be completely different. An important class of common reactions includes those which involve the simultaneous transfer of electrons between chemicals, commonly referred to as redox reactions or oxidation reduction reactions. Redox reactions are whole reactions composed of two different half reactions known as oxidation (where electrons are lost) and reduction (where electrons are gained) (Chemguide, 2013). When there is an increase in the oxidation state, the reaction is oxidation; when there is a decrease, it is reduction. Oxidation cannot possibly occur without an affiliated reduction, and vice versa. Redox reactions are notated as such: Cu(s)  Cu2+ + 2e In the half reaction above, a copper ion (with a plus 2 charge) is formed from the oxidation of solid copper (with no charge). The e in the equation is an electron which is free to reduce other chemical atoms, such as in the half reaction: 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s) Two electrons are added to the two silver ions in this half reaction, in order to produce a solid silver. These two half reactions can be combined to form a redox equation as follows: Cu(s)  Cu2+(aq) + 2e 2 Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s) Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) + 2e OR Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq)  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) A ... • 15. The Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project (HGP) began in 1990 with funding from the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health with the goal of decoding the human genome. Researchers from across the world are working in conjunction to understand the sequence of amino acid base pairs and how they interact with one another to elicit specific genetic reactions. Once the decoding of the genome takes place, scientists will be able to develop individual treatment plans and understand a number of diseases. Research has found that there are over 3 billion amino acid base pairs which make up 20,000 genes. Of these 20,000 genes, the human genetic code is defined by forty six tightly packed bunches called chromosomes. Due to the vast array of amino acid base pairs, the project has taken over ten years to complete the sequencing of the specific parts, but the task of understanding how the parts interact one another and the influence they have on diseases has yet to be accomplished. The genetic material in chromosomes defines human attributes and is developed from proteins. Proteins are a series of amino acids, which are strung together, and the unique combination of nucleic acids (A, T, C, and G) in the protein give specific directions to the cell to produce certain combinations of amino acids. This process creates proteins varying in form and function based upon the series of amino acids. The differing proteins cause numerous actions in the body to be carried out, and are ... This a depressing short story about a child who is born disabled. He faces many problems, one of them being his narcissistic older brother. The Scarlet Ibis gives outstanding examples of foreshadowing, symbolization, and theme. To begin with, foreshadowing is one of the many literary elements in this short story. For instance, the child was born in a caul with many problems. The narrator explains how the child is a great ordeal to everyone. A casket is built as a result of the non belief in the child s life. James Hurst vividly describes this sinister scenery of death by saying The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia petals and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox (Hurst 462). With his disabilities no character in the short story is expecting the child to live long. Both are fragile in the sense that both are easily vulnerable to their surroundings, and easily susceptible to death. When doodle dies his older brother notices the similarities between the Ibis and Doodle; Doodle died like the scarlet ibis, almost exactly the same, as they both died in a storm. For over a decade the Wampanoag ruler had been the intermediary for native land sales to English proprietors. As Philbrick explains, any Pilgrim man wishing to obtain native land was required to make the purchase through the official Plymouth court, thereby preventing unfair sales (like alcohol for land) that the Indians could later dispute. One would imagine that in dealing only with the officials, as opposed to the men purchasing the land, Philip would be granted greater protection from any one of the potential abuses that he could suffer from. Imperialism has always been an exploitative phenomenon, which was the initial motive for colonization. Nigeria has been seen as a dumping ground for most British counties, making it difficult for us to produce our own goods. Though not very pondered, mall safety is a large concern in this country. Many people are unsuspecting of the dangers when going to the mall. Teenagers should be watched by an adult until they turn eighteen. By being accompanied by a guardian or an adult, teenagers are less likely to act out or cause trouble. A constant eye will discourage any unorderly behavior. If the teenagers in the mall the day they set off those firecrackers had been watched by an adult, there s a high chance that never would have happened. Teenagers can be influenced to do the right thing just as much as as they can be influenced to do bad. It s simply better to have any teen under the age of eighteen need to be watched. Malls will be much calmer if this simple task is enforced in all malls. The adult should be responsible for the teenagers and their behavior. This will serve as an incentive for the adult to keep the teenagers tame. The adult along with the teenagers would receive the same consequences. Teenagers attending the mall will have little to no outlet to misbehave. This within itself eradicates some worry mall goers may have concerning their trip to the mall. Not only this, but Ulrich also makes a point at the very end of her essay by including a quote from Gerda Lerner that discusses how our lives are like stories. Ulrich adds, But if no one cares about these stories, they do not survive. People do not make history by living their lives, but by creating records and by turning other people s lives into books or slogans (Ulrich 665). Basically, not everything one person does will be seen as intriguing, only those who have captivating life experiences will go down in history. • 25. Confessional Poetry Of Sylvia Plath In the early 20th century, the Modernist philosophical movement dominated literature. Despite the maturity of the topics the world faced during the time, literature erred on the conservative side and avoided personal issues such as depression, sexuality, and trauma. In the 1950 s, however, Sylvia Plath emerged to spearhead a new era of writing in the form of Confessional poetry. Plagued with depression, suicidal tendencies, and trauma tied to her father s death, Plath explored these taboo themes in her poetry. Alongside a few other influential writers of the period, Plath s intense and intimate poems hailed the start of a revolutionary literature movement ( A Brief Guide to Confessional Poetry ). Death, victimization, and a negative father complex were the leading themes in Plath s life, and inspired much of her work, including the poems The Colossus, and Daddy. Sylvia Plath s parents met when her father, a renowned German professor named Otto, taught Sylvia s mother, Aurelia at Boston University. Born on October 27, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, Sylvia Plath had an ordinary childhood, but the peace was broken in 1934 when Otto fell ill with an advanced stage of diabetes. He died five years later on November 5, 1940 ( Sylvia Plath Biography ). Otto s death profoundly traumatized Sylvia, aged eight at the time; upon hearing of his death, Plath said, I shall never talk to God again. (O Connor). The Law Of Unfair Terms Of Consumer Contracts The law of unfair terms in consumer contracts have experienced changes over the years, the most significant of which was the Consumer Rights Act which came into effect on October 1st 2015. However, before the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA 2015), unfair terms in consumer contracts were covered under two pieces of legislation; the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977(UCTA 1977) and the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 (UTCCR 1999) . The UCTA 1977 and UTCCR 1999 provided liability for transactions occurring in the course of a business as well as business and consumer contracts. Both UCTA 1977 and UTCCR 1999 provided protection for consumers from terms in a contract so as to prevent them from being at a disadvantage for not read contractual terms and conditions. The UCTA 1977 defined a consumer under s.12 (1) (a); as a party dealing not in the course of a business and not holding himself to do so; while in s12 (1) (b) the other party is acting in the course of a business. The UTCCR s definition was very narrow, Regulation 3 stated that a consumer must be a natural person that is not a legal person e.g. a company who contracts outside his business. The UCTA 1977 was a primary legislative whereas the UTCCR 1999 are an implementation of the European Court s Directive on Unfair terms in Consumer Contracts. • 39. The Importance Of Imperialism In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of... It has been argued that humans are mere products of their environment. In the era of imperialism, artists argued that the nations were breeding grounds for corruption and greed. To illustrate this, several artists, such as Joseph Conrad, utilized the victimized frontiers to display the injustices that were happening. Conrad s Heart of Darkness uses the African environment s wildness and symbolic darkness to demonstrate that imperialism s lack of moral restraints will result in one s environment exploiting the evils hidden in their heart. A symbol itself, the Congo River served as a catalyst that carried Marlow s idealistic mindset into the heart of the dark jungle. In the river, one found that they were bewildered and cut off from everything [they] had known once because the waterway ran on... into the gloom of overshadowed distances , which resulted in moments when one s past came back... in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream (Conrad 61). Marlow s prejudiced mindset against the natives originally presented an imperialistic mindset of saving subhumans, however, his ideas clashed with an enigma of the living past, which warped all ideas of reality. • 41. The Stono Rebellion And The Salem Witch Trials Rebellions have played a pivotal role throughout the creation of civilization, impacting the eventual outcomes of cultures. While analyzing significant rebellions within the American colonies, one aspect persists throughout: one culture s assumption that it is superior to another, prompting an attempt to impose that group s culture and way of life over the other. In Metacom s War, the Stono Rebellion, and the Salem Witch Trials, that common theme is evident and corresponds to Bailyn s quote, It was the intermingling of [barbarity] and developing civilization that is the central characteristic of the world that was emerging in America. However, the question remains: who are the barbarians and who are the civilized? In each of the rebellions there is a clear historical tendency to label groups; indeed, it must be noted that viewpoint is of utmost importance when evaluating such events, if one is to truly understand the plight of the barbarian and the civilized. That said, by dissecting the quote, and analyzing these three events, it is clear that each rebellion was the result of cultural ignorance and, as a consequence, a sort of death occurred in each culture for Metacom s war, culture and tradition, for Stono, African freedom, and for Salem, the Puritan utopia.
