Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. The concept of Social Media is top of the agenda for many business executives today. Decision makers, as well as consultants, try to identify ways in which firms can make profitable use of applications such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Second Life, and Twitter. Yet despite this interest, there seems to be very limited understanding of what the term ‘‘Social Media’’ exactly means; this article intends to provide some clarification. We begin by describing the concept of Social Media, and discuss how it differs from related concepts such as Web 2.0 and User Generated Content. Based on this definition, we then provide a classification of Social Media which groups applications currently subsumed under the generalized term into more specific categories by characteristic: collaborative projects, blogs, content communities, social networking sites, virtual game worlds, and virtual social worlds. Finally, we present 10 pieces of advice for companies which decide to utilize Social Media.

Social media tools and their uses - professional websites, Twitter, Blogs, Facebook. This workshop is aimed at helping participants choose online tools, define goals, and assess who is their online audience. Slides include answers to some common social media questions.
In this presentation, we present a framework that defines social media using seven functional building blocks: identity, presence, relationships, conversations, groups, reputations and sharing. As different social media activities are defined by the extent to which they focus on some or all of these blocks, we explain the implications that each block can have for how firms should engage with social media. Traditionally, consumers used the Internet to simply expend content: they read it, they watched it, and they used it to buy products and services. Increasingly, however, consumers are utilizing platforms –— such as content sharing sites, blogs,
social networking, and wikis–—to create, modify, share, and discuss Internet content. This represents the social media phenomenon, which can now significantly impact a firm’s reputation, sales, and even survival. Yet, many executives eschew or ignore this form of media because they don’t understand what it is, the various forms it can take, and how to engage with it and learn. In response, we present a framework that defines

Notes from a day-long training seminar which covers the effective use of social media, from developing a strategy, to looking at how to use a variety of social networking platforms, and where to get help!
The internet has revolutionized the manner by which we can represent ourselves online by providing us the ability to expose our data, experiences and skills online via blogs, wikis and other crowdsourcing venues. As a result it is possible to contribute to the community while developing a social profile as a scientist. While research scientists are primarily still measured by their contributions to science using the classical method of citation statistics, a number of freely available online tools are now available for scientists to develop their online profile. This is particularly important at a time when alternative measures of contributions to science are being developed – the so-called world of Alternative Metrics. The concept of “rewards and recognition” for participation will be discussed in terms of how the Royal Society of Chemistry intends to add to the alternative metrics data flow to acknowledge scientists for their contributions. This presentation will provide an overview of the myriad of tools available to you at any stage of your career and will hopefully encourage you to actively manage your profile as a scientist as the resume of the future will likely be summarized by your activities and profiles online. I will highlight how to ensure that your personal social media profiles can be made engaging to potential collaborators and employers, how social media can be utilized to engage people into events and how to drive traffic to your own sites should you choose to set them up. I will review how my own profiles cover my diverse career in chemistry from “lab-rat” to software product manager, to entrepreneur and into the publishing world and my personal efforts to try and popularize science using some of the social media tools.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

• Smartphones: Use apps to check it while waiting for
bus, centrifuge…(TweetBot, Hootsuite…)
• Software like “Hootsuite” allows scheduling of tweets –
spend time to create content and automatically post it
over the next days

• If you set your account to public, everyone can read it,
even if they do not follow you – they can just visit your
Twitter profile page.

• Don’t tweet about unpublished data (unless absolutely sure

details
• Be polite, credit people and sources.
