This document discusses the operation of electro-pneumatic (E-P) brakes on trains. E-P brakes use electrically operated valves controlled by the driver to precisely apply and release air pressure in the brake cylinders. During brake application, the application valve opens to fill the cylinders while the holding valve closes to maintain pressure. E-P brakes allow for infinite control of braking force through precise adjustments of cylinder pressure. While E-P brakes are used as the service brake, air brakes are retained for emergencies to maintain safety. E-P brakes have been developed over the years while retaining common principles of working with air brakes and using train wires controlled from the driver's cab.
