Introduction 
• The Mainline Electric Multiple Unit or MEMU 
is a commuter rail system in India operated by the 
Indian Railway for semi-urban and rural areas. 
• MEMU trains are designed for semi-urban and 
rural areas, unlike EMU trains that are designed 
for urban and semi-urban areas. MEMU trains 
also have end vestibules not found on EMU 
trains. Also, unlike EMU, MEMU trains have 
lavatories.

Pantograph (4.5-7.0 Kg/cm2) 
• A pantograph is an 
apparatus mounted on the 
roof of MEMU to collect 
power through contact with 
an overhead catenary wire. 
• It is a common type of 
current collector. 
• Typically, a single wire is 
used, with the return 
current running through the 
track.
Current Transformer 
• IT is used to measure 
the value of current 
coming from the 
catenary wire. 
• Its location is below the 
VCB .
VCB (400A, 30KV) 
• A circuit breaker is an 
automatically operated 
electrical switch designed to 
protect an electrical circuit 
from damage caused by 
overload or short circuit. 
• Its basic function is to 
detect a fault condition and 
interrupt current flow. 
• Unlike a fuse, which 
operates once and then 
must be replaced, a circuit 
breaker can be reset to 
resume normal operation
Rod Gap LA (10 KA) 
• A lightning arrester is a device 
used to protect the insulation 
and conductors of the system 
from the damaging effects of 
lighting. 
• The typical lightning arrester 
has a high voltage terminal 
and a ground terminal. 
• When a lightning surge travels 
along the power line to the 
arrester, the current from the 
surge is diverted through the 
arrestor, in most cases to 
earth. 
(i) Earthing is done for Short circuit as well as for lightning. 
(ii) Earthing S/w is connected with VCB in order to prevent contact with 25kv supply during maintenance.
Main Transformer (1000 KVA) 
• It is used to step-down 
the incoming supply to 
782V, 266V and 141V .

• It is a inductive filter used to remove the ac content 
from the main rectifier output. 
• OFAF cooling common with 1000KVA Main 
Transformer.

• IT is used to remove the 
left over AC content 
called ripples present 
in the electrical power

smoothing reactor.
