The vacuum braking system uses vacuum pressure in a brake pipe running the length of the train to operate brake cylinders on each vehicle. When the driver applies the brakes, air is admitted to the brake pipe reducing the vacuum and causing the brake cylinders to apply the brakes via pistons. When the brakes are released, the exhauster recreates the vacuum in the brake pipe drawing the pistons in the brake cylinders back and releasing the brakes. Key components are the exhauster, brake pipe, vacuum reservoir, ball valve and brake cylinders.
