The focus is on the building blocks of electrical engineering, the fundamentals of electrical design and integrating electrical engineering know-how into the other disciplines within an organisation. Unnecessary theory will be minimised and you will focus on best practice over the duration of the workshop.
The workshop will commence by reviewing basic electrical circuits and electrical laws. You will then be exposed to the basic principles of electrical generation, transmission and distribution. Electrical distribution will then be covered in considerably more detail. The interesting area of electrical measurements as applied to single phase and three phase systems will then be reviewed. You will be exposed to earthing with a strong focus on safety issues. Transformers will then be examined with an emphasis on power transformers as used in the electrical distribution industry. The first day will be concluded with coverage of power system components in terms of isolators, fuses and circuit breakers.
The second day will commence with an examination of AC and DC motors, followed by a review of electrical lighting and illumination concepts. The power hungry topic of electrical heating in industry is then examined. The impact especially in the modern world of power electronics is discussed with a demonstration of the possible unpleasant harmonics arising from using this powerful technology. This then smoothly leads into the topic of dealing with power quality. The last three major topics are electrical power system protection, electrical safety and customer installations. The penultimate topic of great interest to executive management in a company (and indeed municipalities and governments) is load forecasting.
The workshop is concluded with modern developments such as substation automation, the smart grid, industrial data communications and the still controversial topic of carbon trading.
A workshop such as this is certainly not going to make you a professional electrical engineer - although many experienced electrical engineers have commented on how useful this course has been in broadening their perspective in other areas of the electrical world. But in two action packed and enjoyable days, you will leave with a valuable toolbox of skills in electrical engineering, thus becoming far more productive and safer in your career and in working with electrical engineers, technicians and managers.

Fiction is a form of narrative, one of the four rhetorical modes of discourse. Fiction-writing also has modes for fiction-writing: action, exposition, description, dialogue, summary, and transition (Morrell 2006, p. 127). Author Peter Selgin refers to methods, including action, dialogue, thoughts, summary, scene, and description (Selgin 2007, p. 38). Currently, there is no consensus within the writing community regarding the number and composition of fiction-writing modes and their uses.
Description is the fiction-writing mode for transmitting a mental image of the particulars of a story. Together with dialogue, narration, exposition, and summarization, description is one of the most widely recognized of the fiction-writing modes. As stated in Writing from A to Z, edited by Kirk Polking, description is more than the amassing of details; it is bringing something to life by carefully choosing and arranging words and phrases to produce the desired effect (Polking 1990, p. 106). The most appropriate and effective techniques for presenting description are a matter of ongoing discussion among writers and writing coaches.Fiction is a form of narrative, one of the four rhetorical modes of discourse. Practical Electrical Substation Safety for Engineers and TechniciansLiving Online
Electrical substation safety is an important issue in utility networks as well as large industrial installations and requires adequate attention in the stages of system planning, design, installation, operation and maintenance. A number of serious accidents including fatalities occur every year in industrial establishments due to accidents involving electricity, resulting in huge financial losses and wasted man-hours. Electrical safety is a well-legislated subject and the various Acts and Regulations lay a lot of stress on the responsibility of both employers and employees in ensuring safe working conditions.
In this workshop, we will take a look at the theoretical aspects of safety as well as the practical and statutory issues. Safety is not simply a matter of taking precautions in the workplace. It has to start at the stage of equipment design. Safety should be built into the design of electrical equipment and it is the responsibility of every manufacturer of electrical equipment to remove every possible hazard that can arise from its normal use. Correct selection and application of electrical machinery is also important for ensuring safety. A thorough inspection during initial erection and commissioning as well as on a periodic basis thereafter is also very essential to ensure safety. Batteries used in substations need particular attention since they contain toxic materials such as lead, corrosive chemicals such as acid or alkali.
Electrical safety is not just a technical issue. Accidents can only be prevented if appropriate safety procedures are evolved and enforced. This includes appropriate knowledge of equipment and systems imparted through systematic training to each and every person who operates or maintains the equipment. We will cover all these aspects in detail.

INTRODUCTION :
Electrical wiring is an electrical installation of cabling and associated devices such as switches, distribution boards, sockets and light fittings in a structure. Wiring is subjected to safety standards for design and installation. Allowable wire and cable types and sixes are specified according to the circuit operating voltage and electric current capability, with further restriction on environmental conditions ,such as ambient temperature range, moisture levels, and exposure to sunlight and chemicals .
Associated circuit protection, control and distribution devices within a building’s wiring system are subject to voltage, current and functional specification. It is necessary to select proper type of wiring scheme for the domestic purpose. Thus a network of wires connecting various accessories for distribution of electrical energy from the supplier meter board to the numerous electrical energy consuming devices through controlling and safety devices is known as Electrical wiring.

Domestic electric circuits:
1.Electric power is usually generated at places which are far away from the places where it is consumed . At the generating station, the electric power is generated at 11KV volts . This voltage alternates at a frequency of 50HZ.
2.The power is transmitted over a long distance at high voltages to minimize the loss of energy in the transmission.
3.The electric power line enter our house through three wires -namely the live wire, the neutral wire and the earth wire.
4.To avoid confusion we follow a colour code for insulating these wires.
5.The ted wire is the live wire, and the black wire is neutral, the earth wire is given green plastic insulation.
Domestic wiring
1.The live wire has a high potential of 220V whereas the neutral wire has zero potential .Thus the potential difference between the live wire and the neutral wire is 220-0=220V.
2.The earth wire is much thicker in size and is made of copper. One end of it is connected to a copper plate buried deep under the earth. The earth connection is made to the electric meter and then the main switch.
A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and interrupt current flow. Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then must be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation. Circuit breakers are made in varying sizes, from small devices that protect an individual household appliance up to large switchgear designed to protect high voltage circuits feeding an entire city.

Non-linear loads can cause transients in electronic switches. They also result in a fluctuating output when the device is switched ON or OFF. These transients can harm not only the switches but also the devices that they are connected to, by passing excess currents or voltages to the devices. By applying machine learning, we can improve the gate drive voltages of the switches and thereby reduce switch transients. A feedback system is built that measures the output transients and then feeds it to a neural network algorithm that then gives a proper gate drive to the device. This will reduce transients and also improve performances of switch based devices like inverters and converters.

Inspection, Testing and Commissioning of Electrical Switchboards, Circuit Bre...Living Online
THE WORKSHOP:
Whether you are designing, specifying, installing, testing or commissioning electrical equipment from small to large commercial and industrial installations, you need to have a thorough understanding of switchboards, switchgear, circuit breakers and associated protective relays.
The overall focus of this workshop is on electrical inspection, testing and commissioning and will commence with a detailed examination of switchgear (and circuit breakers). Circuit breakers are critical components in electrical distribution systems and their operation significantly affects the overall operation of the system. Protection relays are then discussed. These are used in power systems to maximise continuity of supply and are found in both small and large power systems from generation, through transmission, distribution and utilisation of power in plant, industrial and commercial equipment.
We cover commissioning and periodic inspection of cables and their various failure modes and how to detect these faults. The often neglected topic of switchboards will be detailed next, followed by the interesting topic of interfacing to the control system (either PLC’s or other control devices).
Case studies and practical sessions are used throughout to illustrate key practical principles.
This workshop covers key elements in a practical and project focused way. Many people assume (wrongly) that inspecting, testing and commissioning is a fairly straightforward process and is simply a rubber stamp confirmation of a so-called outstanding design. Our experience in the field demonstrates quite the opposite; where the litany of problems ranges from design and installation errors to equipment manufacturing defects. It is best that these problems are identified and corrected before the inevitable downtime comes in an operational installation where many thousands of dollars are lost in correcting the faults. The situation today is made more challenging by the heightened safety requirements and interfacing to low powered electronic control and monitoring devices (such as PLC’s) using software that has to also be verified.

7. Lightning
Lightning is one of the most dramatic examples of
electrical discharge.
May Occur:
• Between cells in the same storm (inter cloud
lightning)
• Within a cloud (intra cloud lightning)
• Cloud to air
• Cloud to ground (CG)

9. Lightning occurs:
Clouds form when air near the earth's surface is
warmed, causing it to rise.
As the air rises it loses its heat and cools.
When air cool, it condenses
When condensation occurs, clouds take shape.

10. Static electricity
We notice static electricity usually in the winter
when the air is very dry
During summer, the air is more humid
The water in the air helps electrons move off you
more quickly, so you can not build up as big a
charge.

www.idc-online.com/slideshare TTeecchhnnoollooggyy TTrraaiinniinngg tthhaatt WWoorrkkss
12. Limitations of static electricity
In thunderstorm clouds, the static charges can build
up to millions of volts, which is very dangerous
It cannot move and is limited to only small distance
Static electricity can cause damage to electronic
equipment
Can also cause uncomfortable shocks
Can be responsible for the ignition of flammable
gases, such as the vapors produced by petrol
(gasoline) when you are filling your car.

19. Frequency
Measurement of the number of occurrences of a
repeated event per unit of time.
Measure the time between two consecutive
occurrences of the event (the Time period T)
www.idc-online.com/slideshare TTeecchhnnoollooggyy TTrraaiinniinngg tthhaatt WWoorrkkss
20. Single phase AC
A single-phase system is one where there is only
one AC voltage source (one source voltage
waveform).
Single-phase distribution is used when loads are
mostly lighting and heating, with few large electric
motors.

21. Three Phase AC
The generation of AC electric power is commonly
three phase.
In Three phase AC, the waveforms of three supply
conductors are offset from one another by 120°.
Standard frequency is 60 Hz.

22. Electric power
Defined as the amount of work done by an electric
current per unit time.
The unit of power is the WATT
For a resistor in a DC Circuit the power is given by
the product of applied voltage and the electric
current
Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I)

23. AC power
AC power flow has the three components:
– Real power (P)
• It is in phase with the applied voltage (V)
• Also known as the active component.
• Measured in watts (W)
– Reactive power (Q)
• It is not in phase with the applied voltage (V)
• Also known as Idle or wattless power
• Measured in reactive volt-amperes (VAr)

24. Power factor correction (PFC)
It is a technique of counteracting the undesirable
effects of electric loads that create a power factor
that is less than 1.
It may be applied either by an electrical power
transmission utility to improve the stability and
efficiency
Or may be installed by individual electrical
customers
To reduce the costs charged to them by their
electricity supplier.

25. Types of PFC Techniques
Passive PFC
• This is a simple way of correcting the nonlinearity
of a load by using capacitor banks.
• It is not as effective as active PFC.
• Switching the capacitors into or out of the circuit
causes harmonics,
• Active PFC or a synchronous motor is preferred.
