The Role Of Managers And Hr Practitioner s Interaction...
The study focuses on the role of managers and HR practitioner s interaction within disciplinary
processes, which has been given less attention throughout research. The focus being that HR
professionals retain a role in providing advice and expertise in ensuring managers comply with
disciplinary procedures (Harris et al., 2002:253) whereas this arguably comes into conflict with
operational managers perceived preference for informality (Edwards ,2000:253) This research may in
turn provide the basis for both organisational policies and practices to change.
The study focuses on the roles of managers and HR professional s interaction within the disciplinary
processes and whether one side of management is favoured more in dealing with the issues than the
other. The different approaches managers and HR professionals undertake when dealing with
disciplinary processes is questionable. Considering statutes based around the chosen topic Gibbons
Review (2007), which highlighted the fact that greater emphasis had been placed on following
procedures correctly. However, Atwater et al (2007) (1) suggested that the impact of the procedural
changes introduced under the Employment Act (2008), downgraded rather than enhanced procedural
fairness. Therefore, highlighting that the attention placed on the nature of dealing with employee
issues is not favoured within larger organisations, resulting in varied approaches between managers
meaning the consistency is therefore not followed through,

The Issue Of Taxation Of The United States Essay
Benjamin Franklin once said, in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.
Taxation has always been a hot button issue in the United States, as it was one of the primary reasons
the United States revolted from the British. The media have once again turned its attention to the issue
of taxation, but primarily on the increasing of taxes solely on upper class citizens. The United States
currently employs a progressive tax rate, which means that the upper class already is liable for a
higher percentage of taxes. During the current presidential campaign, each of the candidates has their
own unique idea of tax reform. Some of the candidates tax plans cut taxes for all through the change
to a flat tax rate, while other plans do quite the contrary and raise taxes for all. The candidates who are
favoring the increase of taxes on the wealthy are attempting to enact laws, which increase funding for
government programs, attempt to redistribute the wealth to the lower class, and eliminate the debt of
the United States. However, the candidates who are attempting to enact a flat tax rate are attempting to
eliminate outdated government programs and to help to increase jobs. A higher tax rate on the wealthy
through a progressive tax system, at a cursory glance, may appear to be beneficial, however, I am
arguing to show the negative effects not only for the wealthy but the United States economy as a
whole. Some may believe that all of the government funded

Literary Analysis Of Eve Of St. Agnes
Eve of St. Agnes had an overwhelming amount of information to take in, and I mean a lot. The setting
where the poem had taken place is what had drawn me in from the get go. What s more thrilling than
an enchanting gothic castle, twisting hallways, the concept forbidden love being tossed around,
medieval feasts, bloodlust dating back all the way to ancient times? I felt as if I was traveling through
time each page I had turned.
The initial part of the poem had major Romeo and Juliet characteristics with Keats giving Porphyro
and Madeline s families a rivalry, but never actually telling his readers how they got it. Personally, I
felt like we really weren t able to grasp how these two kids even got together either or what their
relationship is really like. Instead, Keats relied heavily on the star crossed lovers kept apart by the
family feud motif to get his readers to vividly fill in the blanks.
Nevertheless, Porphyro is a jerk. He turned out to not be the romantic hero I initially had perceived
him to be. My dumb, naive, and sappy heart thought it was adorable that he strategized this plan to run
away with his girlfriend, the alleged love of his life, who had also happened to be part of the bloodline
that is in rivalry with his. I had already taken on this abstract picture in my mind of some cute prince
whisking this princess off her feet, running off into the sunset on a horse, and with her in his arms.
But that picture got annihilated when he had cynically tricked

Obstacle Course Report
The lesson will begin with a warm up, playing a version of the game beans (resource available at:
http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/pe/beans.htm) as a means to prepare the body for activity, increasing
the body temperature and preventing injury to muscles (Australian Sports Commission, 2010). At the
completion of the warm up, the teacher will walk the students through the obstacle course. As the
students are in the developing stage, have volunteers come up to demonstrate, whilst the teacher
explains the focus of each obstacle. If required the teacher can answer any questions regarding the
course that the children may have. It is at this point the teacher should mention the importance of
following instruction for safety reasons, in order to avoid any collisions.
In addition to the classroom teacher, there will be a teacher s aide, and a parent helper. The classroom
teacher will be located at the start of the obstacle course; hopscotch, and ensure that before children
enter the obstacle course, there is sufficient space between them and the previous student. As stated ...

Whilst there is sufficient room for obstacles to be placed out, there is also an increased chance of
injury due to the rough surface. For this reason, soft mats are a requirement for obstacles three and
five. The parent helper will stand by obstacle three, with a particular focusing being on landing
technique.
For safety reasons, only a maximum of five children will be completing the obstacle course at the
same time. Once the first group of children has been through the obstacle course twice, the teacher
aide will direct the students away from the course where they will play do this do that! (resource

Analysis Of Pinter s Night In Old Times
But Ellen, the central figure, is the most severely traumatic of all. Remote even from her memories,
she has entered into a state of mental separation in which the reality of her own thoughts becomes
doubtful: ELLEN: I sometimes wonder if I think. I heard somewhere about how many thoughts go
through the brain of a person. But I couldn t remember anything I d actually thought, for some time. It
isn t something that anyone could ever tell me, could ever reassure me about, nobody could tell, from
looking at me, what was happening. 6 The play Night opens with a disagreement between a husband
(represented by man ) and a wife (represented by woman ), as they try to recall the circumstances of
their first meeting. The man says, MAN: ON the bridge. We stopped and looked down at the river. It
was night. There were lamps lit on the towpath. We were alone. We looked up the river. I put my hand
on the small of your waist. Don t you remember? I put my hand under your coat. 7 Pinter s another
play Old Times deals mainly with the hidden recesses of mind of the character Kate. The whole play is
a complex web woven by Kate in her memory. In the words of John Bull, Old Times continued the
preoccupation with memory, but Beckettian minimalism was put aside as Pinter returned to his
characteristic mixed mode, involving dramatized planes of reality and the withholding of a clear
distinction between past and present. 8 Pinter s Old Times is clearly related to Landscape and Silence

Christianity and The Lutheran Religion
The Lutheran religion was originally branched from Christianity, and is a massive Protestant
denomination currently. Nearly 66 million people worldwide practice this religion (Lutheranism).
Lutheran has a membership which exceeds any other Protestant denomination. Germany is the
primary Lutheran country, as it was from the start (Martin Luther 1483 1546, BBC). This religion
dates back to 1517, the founder of this religion was Martin Luther (McHugh, John).
Martin Luther was born on November 10th, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany (Michael J. O Neal/Sydney
Jones, 225). According to a legend, Martin Luther was riding a horse when a storm struck and he was
hit by lightening. He said: Help, Sainte Anne! I ll become a monk. He was saved and made an
Augustinian monk (Michael J. O Neal/Sydney Jones, 226). Two years later, Luther was ordained and
began teaching at the University of Wittenberg. In 1512 he earned a doctorate in theology
(Lutheranism).
Over the next few years, Martin Luther began to believe that the Catholic Church was being dishonest.
This lead Martin Luther to post his 95 theses against the practice of selling indulgence (Lutheranism).
He hoped for a reformation of the church, however once it became obvious to him that a reformation
would not occur; he began to share his own views. He continued to inform people on his perspective,
regardless of being excommunicated from the church.
Luther had transformed his view on the religion; believing that Christians are saved

Herbal Remedies Should Not Be Legal
A pill for this and a pill for that seems to be all I hear. I say, No, no, no, give me options! It s my
health, and I want choices! Considering herbal remedies have been recorded for thousands of years for
medicinal purposes, I do not understand why I am not given choices for my health therapy. Herbal
remedies should not only be an option in the past, but should be considered and option made
accessible to everyone today. Using herbal remedies and supplements has changed and restored my
health, as I was able to cure my serious health issue without the use of prescription medication. Herbs
and herbal remedies have a long history with favorable results, learning from my personal experience
I believe people should be informed, and offered herbal remedies as an alternative to avert, or possibly
even cure some health issues. Although, herbal remedies may not be the solution to all health
problems, taking into consideration of the history recorded, alternative remedies should be considered
as an option for preventative care and treatment. To be given information on the historical uses of
herbs and herbal remedies, with regards to our health, would be beneficial to us all as this would give
people choices. Plants have been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient
Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC.
Indigenous cultures (such as African and Native American) used herbs in their healing

Holy Trinity
What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Trinity? Do Christians have a
good understanding of what it means to serve a Triune God? Do we explain ourselves in a precise way
or do we leave people with unanswered questions and confusion? I would like to explore the historic,
orthodox Christianity and the classic Wesleyan Arminian consensus beliefs on the person of the Holy
Spirit.
First let us seek what it is that the orthodox Christians and the Wesleyan Arminian believe according
to the Trinity.
Orthodox Christians believe in a single God who is both three and one (triune); the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, one in essence and undivided . The Holy Trinity is three unconfused and distinct divine

The Spirit alone knows the mind of God, and that God knows the mind of the Spirit (pg.45). We see
this happen in a few different ways. The one true God operates through the other Persons in a way that
helps unify the church. He shows us the correct way to be relational with each other. One cannot help
but notice that the Holy Spirit is given to us to help us grow more like Christ and become more the

Among the most spread diseases globally, there are (1) HIV/AIDS, (2) tuberculosis (TB), (3) cholera
and (4) malaria (The Levin Institute, p. 2) The first two can either be found both in developed and
underdeveloped countries, whereas the last two are particularly found in poor countries. Associated
with these diseases is, globalization. With globalization all around, there has been a sharp increase in
global commerce/business and circulation of people. For instance, more merchandises are sent back

The U.s. National Debt
The U.S. national debt is very large at more than three quarters the size of the economy and growing
federal spending, especially on entitlements, is quickly driving the debt to damaging levels. Federal
spending was about 23 percent of the GDP in 2012 far above the historical average of 20.2 percent. It
is projected to surge to nearly 36 percent in less than one generation. The government debt must be
limited in some way or else our economy will face devastating consequences. The government debt
has had its highs and lows throughout history in comparison to the GDP, and to reduce it, we must
minimize spending on entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare.
Since its inception, the United States of America has had fluctuating amounts of debt. High points
usually follow in the wake of war or recessions, and low points usually occur in times of relative
stability in the U.S. Recently, however, the United States has amassed over 18 trillion dollars in debt.
The national debt has been rising steadily since the 1970 s and experienced a large growth around the
year 2009. From the years 1929 to 2009, the Debt to GDP ratio was approximately 48 percent on
average (excluding the years within the World War II era), while from 2009 2014 the Debt to GDP
ratio was approximately 97 percent. This increase was most likely the result of increased defense/war
spending, the Obama s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and the Troubled Asset Relief
Program. All of these events

Physical Culture In America Essay
Over the years, America has established an atmosphere where space and society, not only influences
physical culture, but is influenced by the culture as well. These influences help to create knowledge
and power within contemporary America that has shaped our society. The relationship between
physical culture, space, and society is very important because it has created many of the social
constructs and norms that we have within the sport. Historically, physical activity has been a space for
men to prove their masculinity and power, thus creating a stigma of male superiority. Physical activity
is more than just physical, it is also mental and strategic. Physical activity is used to gain status as
well. Things such as Social constructs, such as race hierarchy, that was formed through contemporary
society found itself embedded within sports. It helped to create different power dynamics within social
groups and classes. Many individuals also profited from being in the space of physical culture and ...

The Field Of Business Management

Business Management
In the field of business there are several fields of emphasis one can choose to focus their major on. I
chose to major in business management for several very distinct reasons that will appear in this paper.
The first reason I choose to focus on a management major was for the opportunity to work with other
people. Management requires collaboration as opposed to simply being an individual effort. The
second reason I am interested in the field of business management is that I am competitive. Because of
this I prefer to step up in a leadership position. The most significant reason for choosing my major is
that I believe in the saying, the greater the risk, the greater the rewards. I know that as a manager I
have to risk the most as the man in charge. I also recognize that I gain the most out of my successes
for putting the most on the line. These reasons that I will discuss in greater detail are the core of why I
chose to major in business management. As mentioned, my interest in business management comes
largely from a desire to collaborate with my peers, but this also means bringing together new
technologies that are modernizing business today. In his article, The Future of Management, Irving
Wladawsky Berger writes, Management talent is critical. As digitization permeates every nook and
cranny of every company, managers at all levels must be fluent in how to best

Good Thesis Statement
To start out of making a good research paper is, to know a good thesis statement to write down on
paper and to evaluate an issue or an idea and presents the breakdown and evaluation to your audience
(owl.english.purdue.edu). Make sure you find the main point of your subject for your paper and try to
summarize your thesis and the evidence you are using to support that point. You should always make
sure you have your paper in the right format before you even begin on writing. Then you explain
something to your audience so that it flows well with the rest of your paper (owl.english.purdue.edu).
You write an argumentative paper that makes a claim about a topic and justifies your claim with
specific evidence. Your claim can be an opinion, a policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, always when you are writing a paper is to put as much in your own words as possible
and try not to paraphrase that much and cite as much as possible. In addition, make sure that the citing
matches your references. You then have to proofread your draft paper and to see that it is in proper
format with a good introduction and conclusion then you can start writing your final paper. However,
proofreading is important to go back and revise your paper (owl.english.purdue.edu). I think the
easiest part of conducting a research paper is about what topic that interests me to write. The things I
struggle with most are how to start out writing and putting it all together on paper. Choosing a good
topic and keep from having writer s block when you start writing. Also check to my grammar,
wordiness or making sure it makes sense. However, when it has been brought to my attention that I am
making mistakes and need help I contact a tutor. Because writing research papers are harder for me to
understand and to put it all together to make any sense. The most important thing for me is looking
forward in the remainder of my schooling is to make sure I write in my forums and my assignments
and check my spelling, grammar, citing, and make sure, when I am doing research to pick a scholarly
peer review site or a reliable website. Moreover, to make

How Social Networks Can Help You Professionally
In my opinion I feel that information technology can assist me in various ways but mainly in my
social, educational and professional future by helping me looking for other jobs that I was not aware
of that were hiring or resources as in knowing what is going on in the today world. It can help me out
educationally so I would be able to be updated with the new homework assignment in college or what
is for lunch and even events afterschool. Professionally it would be able to help me when I would not
know if the business I work at is going good and escalating proficiently or about to go bankrupt and
have no job or even get paid. The internet is very helpful I feel that if there was no computer or
internet it would be very hard for people to get jobs or get notified about an opening if they have no
telephone to contact the company. So that is why it is always good to have some type of informational
technology.
Generally, the social network is rationally gossip only, but there are some networks where people put
together presentations for jobs and post pictures, let people know about openings, and sometimes help
people out with personal problems. Many articles on the social network are hard to believe but there
are times where you do not want to believe what you read because it is so sad and astonishing that
people would do those particular things to each other and have no remorse. Social media such as the
TV, radio, and volunteers notify many communities to come together when a

Reflection On The Scarlet Ibis
The symbol I chose as the focal point on my poster was the Scarlet Ibis (the bird). I chose this because
this was not only the title of the original story, but it was one of the main ideas in the story. When
Doodle found the bird outside, all he wanted to do was bury it when it died, and I think that was a
really special part of the story. I think this really shows who Doodle is, and how his family reacts to it
shows that they know he s sensitive so they treat him with kindness. The theme of the narrative is
perseverance because at first, the brother and his parents need to persevere through having this
disappointment of a child/brother. The brother perseveres through having a not so brother and possibly

What Is The Ten Commandments In Exodus Compared With The...
Compared with the Old Testament, Christian dogmas in the New Testament undergo significant
changes. These differences can be well demonstrated by comparing the Ten Commandments as
presented in Exodus with Jesus commenting upon them in the Gospel of Matthew. The Ten
Commandments, as laid out in Exodus, set most basic rules for every person to follow. They
determine the good and the bad, the moral norms. For example, it isn t morally accepted to kill, to
commit adultery. On the other hand, it s everyone s moral duty to love God, to love and respect one s
parents (Exodus, 20:3). Jesus bases his teaching upon the same commandments. Talking to his
disciples, as presented in Matthew s, he gives to these basic and simply listed rules more depth and

aspects, namely (1) the rationale behind your selection, (2) the changing requirements imposed by the

of the informational age, equivalent to the role played by railway systems in the process of

is in the process of reaching maturity but that there are still gaps where the advances in IT have not

Texas Teacher Evaluation And Support System
T TESS
Since 1997, the primary tool for teacher evaluation was the Professional Development and Appraisal
System better known as PDAS. Due to significant efforts to enhance both teacher effectiveness and
student learning and growth, the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T TESS) was
elaborated (TEA, 2016, p. 3). The T TESS was designed by educators to support continuous
improvement by focusing on feedback and support, moving the mindset away from compliance (TEA,
2016, p. 3).

First of all, continual feedback allows teachers to self reflect on best practices. For example, a teacher
can target his/her areas of weakness in order to grow professionally and gain further insight of best
practices. Another benefit, of teacher evaluations is higher student success rates. These, for example,
are measurable through district assessments and state standardized assessments. If a teachers success
rate has significantly improved through modification of practices, T TESS has served its intended
purpose. Finally, yet another benefit of teacher evaluations is the fact that the educator is an active
participant in his/her evaluation process. For example, through goal setting, the educator is allowed
the opportunity to decide where he/she want to grow. Through the evaluation cycle and the
communication therein, the appraiser and educator both take greater responsibility in understanding
and meeting established goals. Finally, at the end of the process, student growth is an indicator of a
well developed and integrated evaluation system. These are but a few of the many benefits reaped
from an evaluation systems such as T TESS (TEA,

The Impact of the American Civil War
The American civil war was an important event in the history of United States. It changed the internal
structure of American society and had a greater impact than the revolution. The basis of the civil war
was due to slavery. It overthrew the once dominated planter elite politically and its slaveholding class.
During early decades of the nineteen century the planters of American south were not about to follow
the path of gradual emancipation that the northern states had raged. The economies of the south and

While colonists in the South learned to use slaves on plantations, the colonists in the north learned
different skills. Although slavery was not an important to thr way of life in the North it did exist in the

In year 1607, a small band of English colonists founded the first permanent settlement in America at
Jamestown, Virginia. They did not plan to own slaves even though many thousands of African slaves
were already working in the New England. Also, hundreds thousands of American Salves worked on
Sugar plantations and in mines owned by Spanish and Portuguese colonists in the Caribbean islands
and South America.
Jamestown, colonists hoped to get rich by discovering gold as the Spanish had done in Mexico. They
did not find gold but the did find a climate that was good for growing crops, such as tobacco that they
would sell later to England. After twelve years, Jamestown was founded; a Dutch ship brought the
first African to Virginia. And they start working on tobacco plantations. Some historians say that these
first Africans in America were indentured servants rather than slaves. On the other hand, some had
argued that English plantation owners used the term servant rather than the term slave.

Technology And Evolution Of Cell Phones
When cell phones were first introduced, they were large and expensive. In 1983 the first truly mobile
phone was released by Motorola. It was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. To some people it is known as
the Zack Morris phone. He used this phone on a regular basis in a popular television show called
Saved by the bell which took place in the late 80 s to early 90 s. It was an extremely large device
compared to the ones we are used to now and it was only designed to make phone calls. It was not
often used for personal use like today. They were primarily used in the sales and business world, but
not for personal use like you see today said Kreg Jones, an industrial designer and industrial design
instructor at the Art institute of Philadelphia ( The History and Evolution of Cell Phones ). Initially
cell phones could only make phone calls. In later cell phones eventually voicemail was added, but the
main feature was still talking. Eventually companies realized the potential to integrate other
technologies into the phones. The earliest smart phones integrated email access and allowed the phone
to be used as an address book, pager, and fax machine. Cell phones more recently picked up the name
mobile device as the purpose has shifted to more of a multimedia device rather than just a phone used
for only direct communication. Cell phones have come a long way since then. They have continued to
evolve and have become a huge part of our life today. It s not just adults who have

Racial Differences In Basketball Essay
In my opinion, I definitely think there is a racial difference when it comes to athletic ability. For the
most part, something that we can all agree on, is that we can see the racial differences in sports
especially when it comes to basketball. When trying to find individuals who are good at playing
basketball, most likely the team will consist of a majority of individuals who comes from an African
descent. The question however is, why is this the case? I believe that there are two theories to explain
this concept.
The first theory that I feel like might be the answer is because, it is something that they have grown up
and have done throughout several generations. When children see certain activities that are constantly
repeated throughout their family, or those who look similar to them race wise, they feel like it is
something that they have to do as well. If we view this situation in the eyes of a child who is African
American, when he or she sees that there is a famous man from an African descent who is the best
player within the entire basketball team, the child now believes that those who are black are better at
playing basketball, which encourages the child to follow the footsteps of those who belongs in their
race. However, if the same child watches a soccer match, the child sees that there isn t anyone on the
soccer team who is black. So, in the child s mind, he or she is already making assumptions that, those
who are African American are the ones who play

Comparing Rap And Classical Music
Rap and classical music are often portrayed as two different types of music. One can tell the difference
of the genre from the sound, and the music s essences. Producers and composers of these two styles of
music present themselves differently, however, they both do what they love and express their emotions
through vocals or use of instruments. Almost all Rap artists write their own lyrics. Because of this,
most rap songs are direct and often very personal. Most rap music s instruments are electronic, and
computer generated. As for classical music, it has more of a sophisticated sound. This style of music
has a strong emphasis on beauty, balance, and elegance. However, if you take your time and listen to
both genres carefully, you can find many similarities between the two through the use of tempo,
melody, and rhythm. Both classical and rap music have history. Even though classical is mostly just
instruments playing, the composers, like rap artists, write their own music and lyrics. What makes a
song interesting and powerful is when it has story to tell. Any musician that writes their own music is
a form of expression that they voice to their audience and listeners. ` Ever since I was young I have
always had a passion for music. I love understanding what drove the artist or musician to write that
song. I never thought I would take the time to really appreciate classical music until I took this music
course. I attended two classical concerts that left me entirely speechless.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. died as he lived. Always known as a competitor who brought the best out in

The Effects Of Physical Abuse On Child Abuse
The United States has been fighting the war against child abuse since the first case of child abuse in
1874 that included a child being beaten and chained against her will (Meadows, 2014). Many people
hear the words child abuse and think of physical abuse. While, many people are correct in thinking of
physical abuse, an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study done by the CDC shows that although
physical abuse is the leading form of child abuse, emotional or psychological abuse is the second
leading form of child abuse (2014). Although one would think sexual abuse along with physical abuse
would be the prominent form of abuse, this is not the case. One of the major reasons emotional neglect
is more prominent than sexual abuse is due to the fact that emotional abuse is not being overlooked as
often as it used to. In fact, it is now being seen as the gateway to physical and sexual abuse
(Garbarino, Guttman, Seeley, 1988). The amounts of consequences that come from being abused as a
child are countless as well as life changing, some of these life changing effects were identified by the
CDC as drug abuse, sexual transmitted diseases, suicidal thoughts, and difficulty learning (2014).
When a child who has been abused begins school they approach the classroom setting, similar to a dog
that has been abused by its owner approaches other humans, the child approaches the classroom with a
skeptical attitude (Fink, A. H., Janssen, K. N, 1992). They are constantly avoiding

Susan Duck Of University Of Iowa Calls Women s Studies Essay
Often times women s studies are overshadowed by topics pertaining to other matters. Because of this,
Steve Duck of University of Iowa calls women s studies understudied relationships . In his book,
Under Studied Relationships: Off the Beaten Track, Steve delves into the complicated world that is
friendship between women. He reveals that even the best of friendships, more often than not, will
dissolve due to geographical distance, especially during the transition from high school to college.
However, Duck claims that this occurrence is more detrimental to male friendships than female
friendships. According to Duck, ...men s inability to maintain distal friends may be due to a lack of
awareness about and skills to utilize effective strategies that maintain a [friendship] (184). This
argument implies that men simply do not put as much emotional value into friendships as women do.
While distance may seem challenging for women to overcome, they put more effort into preserving
their friendship. Duck further instills this concept by explaining that women s same sex friendships
tend to be based more on intimate and emotional discussions than men s... (186). Men, Duck argues,
lack the depth in their friendships that women possess and for this reason have difficulty sustaining a
friendship that is met with the strain of distance.
This idea can be backed up by numerous studies. According to an examination of different sex roles
by Toni Antonucci and Hiroko Akiyama, women have

Other scholars describe freedom as a form of liberation from restraint or slavery or from the power of
depending on another. It is a state of being independent (Höhn and Martin 1). Traditionally, the

In the fight for these rights, literature records that African Americans suffered great mistreatments at
the hands on the white Americans. Arrests and beatings were routine of the everyday life of majority
of the African Americans, as they fight to become equal to other Americans. The church played
significant role during this period, other than offering spiritual nourishment. The church gave African
Americans hopes for some brighter future (Calhoun Brown, Allison 171). It acted as a center where
the African Americans would come together and share ideas on how they would help themselves come
out of slavery and get some freedom for their people. This paper critically looks at the role of the
church in the struggle for freedom by Black Americans. There had been uprisings all over the

of COPD. This estimation was based on caiculating relative risk (RR) and attributable proportion

Relative risk (RR) is the ratio of the probability of the event occurring in the exposed group versus a

incidence rate among those not exposed to that factor. Population Prevented Fraction refers to

Allen Ginsberg Howl Analysis Essay
The Chameleon of Poetry: A Literary Analysis of Howl by Allen Ginsberg The tones that we portray
every day change from one to the next, sort of like how a chameleon changes color depending on the
environment that they are in. I personally change my tone when handling certain situations that occur,
situations such as arguments. When in an argument with my significant other, for example, I go from
calm to angry very quickly. Words are spewed out left and right in a chaos of disagreements. My tone
however, then transitions into blame. I start to put all of the blame on my significant other, even
accusing them for the argument that just ensued. Although I get stubborn, I then change to resolution.

Ginsberg uses the key words I m with you to begin each line of Part III in a way to resolve the
madness and blame that were portrayed in parts I and II. For instance, line 106 says, I m with you in
Rockland where fifty more shocks will never return your soul to its body again from its pilgrimage to
a cross in the void, to describe the result of the madness that occurred in Part I. The phrase, where fifty
more shocks will never return your soul, refers to the shock therapy that the institution gave Ginsberg,
and perhaps Ginsberg s mother, to knock them out of their psychotic state. The line also refers to their
soul that has been lost through the influences of the government, where their bodies are robots doing
normal things rather than experiencing life itself. Ginsberg also makes remarks of the blame in Part II
stating, I m with you in Rockland where you laugh at this invisible humor, where he describes that the
blame in Part II was not as serious later down the road. Through Part III, Ginsberg resolves the drama
that was portrayed in parts I and II to show that although he is a writer, there are events in life that
should be resolved instead of holding onto them. As an individual who went through a lot of drama in
life, I understand that people need to resolve certain issues in their life. People need to resolve issues
in their life not only to give the other individual forgiveness, but also to forgive themselves for

Ownership of Digital Downloads
Ownership of Digital Downloads
Digital downloads are intellectual Properties of the innovators and the actual owners of the ideas
uploaded online. Ownership of digital content is exclusively reserved for the copyright owners who
have spent many years and others decades trying to come up with an idea. Downloading of digital
content online does not make that user the owner, and as such, there are no rights that have been
transferred to the user except those of using the content. For instance, a user is allowed to listen and
enjoy the downloaded music, watch the movies and read the books found online but it ends at that.
They cannot hold any ownership rights other than those of using it.
Technology has evolved with high speed and it attracts many people especially the youths who prefer
to use online downloads as opposed to tangible sources. As result, people who have produced their
content such as books, music and film are attracted to upload their content online for people to buy it
and then download it. Sales are better online than on the stores as it is convenient, faster and
accessible. The internet provides an easy method of sale but the prices are much lower than those of
purchasing a tangible content such as a book, a CD or a tape. Books, CDs and tapes carry ownership
rights and can be considered the buyers property as opposed to the online copy which ownership does
not leave the copyrighter. In this case, you cannot be said to own something you cannot show or hold.

Better Online Ticket Sale Act Case Analysis
The Better Online Ticket Sale Act will prohibit the usage of computer softwares to purchase large
amounts of tickets and reselling them at a higher price, claiming the ticket scalping is unfair. If I was a
member of congress, I would have supported this act because using softwares to buy and resell tickets
drives up the price for the buyers, who had less chance of purchasing it competing with the software at
the original price. Aristotle would have also been supportive of this act, who believe retail trade and
money making are unnatural ways of attaining wealth. Moreover, John Ruskin would make similar
decision, due to his concern with the way we obtain wealth, and inequality in the economy. However,
Andrew Carnegie would have thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, in this case, the consumers are getting poorer in response to the ticket scalpers earning a profit.
In his article, he wrote about two examples about events that happens in life, and ways of pursuing
money that can leads to inequality. Also arguing that inequality of wealth distribution will leads to less
accumulative production, because those who are wealthier will choose not to work not because they
are incapable, but they have the ability to fulfill their needs by paying the others. In this case, the
consumers who purchase the tickets are working hard to be able to pay for them at a much higher
price, while the ticket scalpers are earning a huge profit, which will lead them to work less, therefore,
the community will have a lower total output.
Some will also argue against Better Online Ticket Sales Act, claiming that its benefits to the economy
outweighs the negative effects. Andrew Carnegie, one of the most wealthy man in U.S. history, takes a
different standpoint than Aristotle and Ruskin. Carnegie believe the distribution of wealth is important
in an economy, and the wealthier are more capable of handling money. The way of obtaining wealth is
not so important as compared to the way of spending it, Carnegie believe the rich have the
responsibility of improving the society, and they should allow their wealth to flow back into the
society. He then would argue the ticket scalpers are

My Creation Of A Soundtrack For Octavia E. Butler s...
Soundtracks to films often strive to represent the themes and feeling of the film, and direct the
audience towards particular emotions. A good soundtrack not only allows for the listener to understand
the film better, but it should also bring to mind particular scenes, images, or characters. Soundtracks
for books can do the same. In my creation of a soundtrack for Octavia E. Butler s Parable of the
Sower, I strove to encompass Lauren s journey throughout the novel and the various emotions that she
experiences. Since Lauren is reflecting on her experiences, her journey becomes central to how the
audience feels and experiences the emotional aspects of the book. The songs not only represent
Lauren, but also the entire feel and theme of the text. The songs follow along with Lauren, with her
despair, death, and the need for survival. As I scoured through song after song, I tried to connect each
song choice with a particular moment in Lauren s story and the hopelessness of a dystopian future
Butler warns her audience about. The first track is Things We Lost in the Fire by the band Bastille, and
is one of the more literal song selections about the event that triggers the rest of the events in the story
to occur: the death of her father, the pyros, the destruction of her community. The song is literally
about things that burn up and leave, never to be seen again. Fire plays a key role in the fear aspect of
the book; fire is synonymous with chaos. Not only does the song

  • 2. The Role Of Managers And Hr Practitioner s Interaction... The study focuses on the role of managers and HR practitioner s interaction within disciplinary processes, which has been given less attention throughout research. The focus being that HR professionals retain a role in providing advice and expertise in ensuring managers comply with disciplinary procedures (Harris et al., 2002:253) whereas this arguably comes into conflict with operational managers perceived preference for informality (Edwards ,2000:253) This research may in turn provide the basis for both organisational policies and practices to change. The study focuses on the roles of managers and HR professional s interaction within the disciplinary processes and whether one side of management is favoured more in dealing with the issues than the other. The different approaches managers and HR professionals undertake when dealing with disciplinary processes is questionable. Considering statutes based around the chosen topic Gibbons Review (2007), which highlighted the fact that greater emphasis had been placed on following procedures correctly. However, Atwater et al (2007) (1) suggested that the impact of the procedural changes introduced under the Employment Act (2008), downgraded rather than enhanced procedural fairness. Therefore, highlighting that the attention placed on the nature of dealing with employee issues is not favoured within larger organisations, resulting in varied approaches between managers meaning the consistency is therefore not followed through, ... • 3. The Issue Of Taxation Of The United States Essay Benjamin Franklin once said, in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. Taxation has always been a hot button issue in the United States, as it was one of the primary reasons the United States revolted from the British. The media have once again turned its attention to the issue of taxation, but primarily on the increasing of taxes solely on upper class citizens. The United States currently employs a progressive tax rate, which means that the upper class already is liable for a higher percentage of taxes. During the current presidential campaign, each of the candidates has their own unique idea of tax reform. Some of the candidates tax plans cut taxes for all through the change to a flat tax rate, while other plans do quite the contrary and raise taxes for all. The candidates who are favoring the increase of taxes on the wealthy are attempting to enact laws, which increase funding for government programs, attempt to redistribute the wealth to the lower class, and eliminate the debt of the United States. However, the candidates who are attempting to enact a flat tax rate are attempting to eliminate outdated government programs and to help to increase jobs. A higher tax rate on the wealthy through a progressive tax system, at a cursory glance, may appear to be beneficial, however, I am arguing to show the negative effects not only for the wealthy but the United States economy as a whole. Some may believe that all of the government funded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Literary Analysis Of Eve Of St. Agnes Eve of St. Agnes had an overwhelming amount of information to take in, and I mean a lot. The setting where the poem had taken place is what had drawn me in from the get go. What s more thrilling than an enchanting gothic castle, twisting hallways, the concept forbidden love being tossed around, medieval feasts, bloodlust dating back all the way to ancient times? I felt as if I was traveling through time each page I had turned. The initial part of the poem had major Romeo and Juliet characteristics with Keats giving Porphyro and Madeline s families a rivalry, but never actually telling his readers how they got it. Personally, I felt like we really weren t able to grasp how these two kids even got together either or what their relationship is really like. Instead, Keats relied heavily on the star crossed lovers kept apart by the family feud motif to get his readers to vividly fill in the blanks. Nevertheless, Porphyro is a jerk. He turned out to not be the romantic hero I initially had perceived him to be. My dumb, naive, and sappy heart thought it was adorable that he strategized this plan to run away with his girlfriend, the alleged love of his life, who had also happened to be part of the bloodline that is in rivalry with his. I had already taken on this abstract picture in my mind of some cute prince whisking this princess off her feet, running off into the sunset on a horse, and with her in his arms. But that picture got annihilated when he had cynically tricked ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Obstacle Course Report The lesson will begin with a warm up, playing a version of the game beans (resource available at: http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/pe/beans.htm) as a means to prepare the body for activity, increasing the body temperature and preventing injury to muscles (Australian Sports Commission, 2010). At the completion of the warm up, the teacher will walk the students through the obstacle course. As the students are in the developing stage, have volunteers come up to demonstrate, whilst the teacher explains the focus of each obstacle. If required the teacher can answer any questions regarding the course that the children may have. It is at this point the teacher should mention the importance of following instruction for safety reasons, in order to avoid any collisions. In addition to the classroom teacher, there will be a teacher s aide, and a parent helper. The classroom teacher will be located at the start of the obstacle course; hopscotch, and ensure that before children enter the obstacle course, there is sufficient space between them and the previous student. As stated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whilst there is sufficient room for obstacles to be placed out, there is also an increased chance of injury due to the rough surface. • 7. Analysis Of Pinter s Night In Old Times But Ellen, the central figure, is the most severely traumatic of all. Remote even from her memories, she has entered into a state of mental separation in which the reality of her own thoughts becomes doubtful: ELLEN: I sometimes wonder if I think. I heard somewhere about how many thoughts go through the brain of a person. But I couldn t remember anything I d actually thought, for some time. It isn t something that anyone could ever tell me, could ever reassure me about, nobody could tell, from looking at me, what was happening. 6 The play Night opens with a disagreement between a husband (represented by man ) and a wife (represented by woman ), as they try to recall the circumstances of their first meeting. The man says, MAN: ON the bridge. We stopped and looked down at the river. It was night. There were lamps lit on the towpath. We were alone. We looked up the river. I put my hand on the small of your waist. Don t you remember? I put my hand under your coat. 7 Pinter s another play Old Times deals mainly with the hidden recesses of mind of the character Kate. The whole play is a complex web woven by Kate in her memory. In the words of John Bull, Old Times continued the preoccupation with memory, but Beckettian minimalism was put aside as Pinter returned to his characteristic mixed mode, involving dramatized planes of reality and the withholding of a clear distinction between past and present. 8 Pinter s Old Times is clearly related to Landscape and Silence by ... • 8. Christianity and The Lutheran Religion The Lutheran religion was originally branched from Christianity, and is a massive Protestant denomination currently. Nearly 66 million people worldwide practice this religion (Lutheranism). Lutheran has a membership which exceeds any other Protestant denomination. Germany is the primary Lutheran country, as it was from the start (Martin Luther 1483 1546, BBC). This religion dates back to 1517, the founder of this religion was Martin Luther (McHugh, John). Martin Luther was born on November 10th, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany (Michael J. O Neal/Sydney Jones, 225). According to a legend, Martin Luther was riding a horse when a storm struck and he was hit by lightening. He said: Help, Sainte Anne! I ll become a monk. He was saved and made an Augustinian monk (Michael J. O Neal/Sydney Jones, 226). Two years later, Luther was ordained and began teaching at the University of Wittenberg. In 1512 he earned a doctorate in theology (Lutheranism). Over the next few years, Martin Luther began to believe that the Catholic Church was being dishonest. This lead Martin Luther to post his 95 theses against the practice of selling indulgence (Lutheranism). He hoped for a reformation of the church, however once it became obvious to him that a reformation would not occur; he began to share his own views. He continued to inform people on his perspective, regardless of being excommunicated from the church. Luther had transformed his view on the religion; believing that Christians are saved ... • 9. Herbal Remedies Should Not Be Legal A pill for this and a pill for that seems to be all I hear. I say, No, no, no, give me options! It s my health, and I want choices! Considering herbal remedies have been recorded for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, I do not understand why I am not given choices for my health therapy. Herbal remedies should not only be an option in the past, but should be considered and option made accessible to everyone today. Using herbal remedies and supplements has changed and restored my health, as I was able to cure my serious health issue without the use of prescription medication. Herbs and herbal remedies have a long history with favorable results, learning from my personal experience I believe people should be informed, and offered herbal remedies as an alternative to avert, or possibly even cure some health issues. Although, herbal remedies may not be the solution to all health problems, taking into consideration of the history recorded, alternative remedies should be considered as an option for preventative care and treatment. To be given information on the historical uses of herbs and herbal remedies, with regards to our health, would be beneficial to us all as this would give people choices. Plants have been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. • 10. Holy Trinity What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Trinity? Do Christians have a good understanding of what it means to serve a Triune God? Do we explain ourselves in a precise way or do we leave people with unanswered questions and confusion? I would like to explore the historic, orthodox Christianity and the classic Wesleyan Arminian consensus beliefs on the person of the Holy Spirit. First let us seek what it is that the orthodox Christians and the Wesleyan Arminian believe according to the Trinity. Orthodox Christians believe in a single God who is both three and one (triune); the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one in essence and undivided . Associated with these diseases is, globalization. With globalization all around, there has been a sharp increase in global commerce/business and circulation of people. • 12. The U.s. National Debt The U.S. national debt is very large at more than three quarters the size of the economy and growing federal spending, especially on entitlements, is quickly driving the debt to damaging levels. Federal spending was about 23 percent of the GDP in 2012 far above the historical average of 20.2 percent. It is projected to surge to nearly 36 percent in less than one generation. The government debt must be limited in some way or else our economy will face devastating consequences. The government debt has had its highs and lows throughout history in comparison to the GDP, and to reduce it, we must minimize spending on entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare. Since its inception, the United States of America has had fluctuating amounts of debt. High points usually follow in the wake of war or recessions, and low points usually occur in times of relative stability in the U.S. Recently, however, the United States has amassed over 18 trillion dollars in debt. The national debt has been rising steadily since the 1970 s and experienced a large growth around the year 2009. From the years 1929 to 2009, the Debt to GDP ratio was approximately 48 percent on average (excluding the years within the World War II era), while from 2009 2014 the Debt to GDP ratio was approximately 97 percent. This increase was most likely the result of increased defense/war spending, the Obama s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and the Troubled Asset Relief Program. All of these events ... • 13. Physical Culture In America Essay Over the years, America has established an atmosphere where space and society, not only influences physical culture, but is influenced by the culture as well. These influences help to create knowledge and power within contemporary America that has shaped our society. The relationship between physical culture, space, and society is very important because it has created many of the social constructs and norms that we have within the sport. Historically, physical activity has been a space for men to prove their masculinity and power, thus creating a stigma of male superiority. Physical activity is more than just physical, it is also mental and strategic. Physical activity is used to gain status as well. Things such as Social constructs, such as race hierarchy, that was formed through contemporary society found itself embedded within sports. It helped to create different power dynamics within social groups and classes. Many individuals also profited from being in the space of physical culture and ... • 14. The Field Of Business Management Gerardo Gutierrez Courtney Graeff ENG 122 049 22 October 2014 Business Management In the field of business there are several fields of emphasis one can choose to focus their major on. I chose to major in business management for several very distinct reasons that will appear in this paper. The first reason I choose to focus on a management major was for the opportunity to work with other people. Management requires collaboration as opposed to simply being an individual effort. The second reason I am interested in the field of business management is that I am competitive. Because of this I prefer to step up in a leadership position. The most significant reason for choosing my major is that I believe in the saying, the greater the risk, the greater the rewards. I know that as a manager I have to risk the most as the man in charge. I also recognize that I gain the most out of my successes for putting the most on the line. These reasons that I will discuss in greater detail are the core of why I chose to major in business management. As mentioned, my interest in business management comes largely from a desire to collaborate with my peers, but this also means bringing together new technologies that are modernizing business today. In his article, The Future of Management, Irving Wladawsky Berger writes, Management talent is critical. As digitization permeates every nook and cranny of every company, managers at all levels must be fluent in how to best ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It can help me out educationally so I would be able to be updated with the new homework assignment in college or what is for lunch and even events afterschool. Professionally it would be able to help me when I would not know if the business I work at is going good and escalating proficiently or about to go bankrupt and have no job or even get paid. The internet is very helpful I feel that if there was no computer or internet it would be very hard for people to get jobs or get notified about an opening if they have no telephone to contact the company. So that is why it is always good to have some type of informational technology. Generally, the social network is rationally gossip only, but there are some networks where people put together presentations for jobs and post pictures, let people know about openings, and sometimes help people out with personal problems. Many articles on the social network are hard to believe but there are times where you do not want to believe what you read because it is so sad and astonishing that people would do those particular things to each other and have no remorse. I chose this because this was not only the title of the original story, but it was one of the main ideas in the story. When Doodle found the bird outside, all he wanted to do was bury it when it died, and I think that was a really special part of the story. I think this really shows who Doodle is, and how his family reacts to it shows that they know he s sensitive so they treat him with kindness. These differences can be well demonstrated by comparing the Ten Commandments as presented in Exodus with Jesus commenting upon them in the Gospel of Matthew. The Ten Commandments, as laid out in Exodus, set most basic rules for every person to follow. They determine the good and the bad, the moral norms. For example, it isn t morally accepted to kill, to commit adultery. On the other hand, it s everyone s moral duty to love God, to love and respect one s parents (Exodus, 20:3). If a teachers success rate has significantly improved through modification of practices, T TESS has served its intended purpose. Finally, yet another benefit of teacher evaluations is the fact that the educator is an active participant in his/her evaluation process. For example, through goal setting, the educator is allowed the opportunity to decide where he/she want to grow. For the most part, something that we can all agree on, is that we can see the racial differences in sports especially when it comes to basketball. When trying to find individuals who are good at playing basketball, most likely the team will consist of a majority of individuals who comes from an African descent. The question however is, why is this the case? I believe that there are two theories to explain this concept. The first theory that I feel like might be the answer is because, it is something that they have grown up and have done throughout several generations. When children see certain activities that are constantly repeated throughout their family, or those who look similar to them race wise, they feel like it is something that they have to do as well. If we view this situation in the eyes of a child who is African American, when he or she sees that there is a famous man from an African descent who is the best player within the entire basketball team, the child now believes that those who are black are better at playing basketball, which encourages the child to follow the footsteps of those who belongs in their race. One can tell the difference of the genre from the sound, and the music s essences. Producers and composers of these two styles of music present themselves differently, however, they both do what they love and express their emotions through vocals or use of instruments. Almost all Rap artists write their own lyrics. Because of this, most rap songs are direct and often very personal. Most rap music s instruments are electronic, and computer generated. As for classical music, it has more of a sophisticated sound. This style of music has a strong emphasis on beauty, balance, and elegance. However, if you take your time and listen to both genres carefully, you can find many similarities between the two through the use of tempo, melody, and rhythm. Both classical and rap music have history. Even though classical is mostly just instruments playing, the composers, like rap artists, write their own music and lyrics. What makes a song interesting and powerful is when it has story to tell. Any musician that writes their own music is a form of expression that they voice to their audience and listeners. ` Ever since I was young I have always had a passion for music. • 28. The Effects Of Physical Abuse On Child Abuse The United States has been fighting the war against child abuse since the first case of child abuse in 1874 that included a child being beaten and chained against her will (Meadows, 2014). Many people hear the words child abuse and think of physical abuse. While, many people are correct in thinking of physical abuse, an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study done by the CDC shows that although physical abuse is the leading form of child abuse, emotional or psychological abuse is the second leading form of child abuse (2014). Although one would think sexual abuse along with physical abuse would be the prominent form of abuse, this is not the case. One of the major reasons emotional neglect is more prominent than sexual abuse is due to the fact that emotional abuse is not being overlooked as often as it used to. In fact, it is now being seen as the gateway to physical and sexual abuse (Garbarino, Guttman, Seeley, 1988). The amounts of consequences that come from being abused as a child are countless as well as life changing, some of these life changing effects were identified by the CDC as drug abuse, sexual transmitted diseases, suicidal thoughts, and difficulty learning (2014). When a child who has been abused begins school they approach the classroom setting, similar to a dog that has been abused by its owner approaches other humans, the child approaches the classroom with a skeptical attitude (Fink, A. Through Part III, Ginsberg resolves the drama that was portrayed in parts I and II to show that although he is a writer, there are events in life that should be resolved instead of holding onto them. • 38. Ownership of Digital Downloads Ownership of Digital Downloads Digital downloads are intellectual Properties of the innovators and the actual owners of the ideas uploaded online. Ownership of digital content is exclusively reserved for the copyright owners who have spent many years and others decades trying to come up with an idea. Downloading of digital content online does not make that user the owner, and as such, there are no rights that have been transferred to the user except those of using the content. For instance, a user is allowed to listen and enjoy the downloaded music, watch the movies and read the books found online but it ends at that. They cannot hold any ownership rights other than those of using it. Technology has evolved with high speed and it attracts many people especially the youths who prefer to use online downloads as opposed to tangible sources. As result, people who have produced their content such as books, music and film are attracted to upload their content online for people to buy it and then download it. Sales are better online than on the stores as it is convenient, faster and accessible. The internet provides an easy method of sale but the prices are much lower than those of purchasing a tangible content such as a book, a CD or a tape. In this case, you cannot be said to own something you cannot show or hold. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Better Online Ticket Sale Act Case Analysis The Better Online Ticket Sale Act will prohibit the usage of computer softwares to purchase large amounts of tickets and reselling them at a higher price, claiming the ticket scalping is unfair. If I was a member of congress, I would have supported this act because using softwares to buy and resell tickets drives up the price for the buyers, who had less chance of purchasing it competing with the software at the original price. Aristotle would have also been supportive of this act, who believe retail trade and money making are unnatural ways of attaining wealth. Moreover, John Ruskin would make similar decision, due to his concern with the way we obtain wealth, and inequality in the economy. However, Andrew Carnegie would have thought ... In his article, he wrote about two examples about events that happens in life, and ways of pursuing money that can leads to inequality. Also arguing that inequality of wealth distribution will leads to less accumulative production, because those who are wealthier will choose not to work not because they are incapable, but they have the ability to fulfill their needs by paying the others. In this case, the consumers who purchase the tickets are working hard to be able to pay for them at a much higher price, while the ticket scalpers are earning a huge profit, which will lead them to work less, therefore, the community will have a lower total output. Some will also argue against Better Online Ticket Sales Act, claiming that its benefits to the economy outweighs the negative effects. Andrew Carnegie, one of the most wealthy man in U.S. history, takes a different standpoint than Aristotle and Ruskin. Carnegie believe the distribution of wealth is important in an economy, and the wealthier are more capable of handling money. The way of obtaining wealth is not so important as compared to the way of spending it, Carnegie believe the rich have the responsibility of improving the society, and they should allow their wealth to flow back into the society. • 42. My Creation Of A Soundtrack For Octavia E. Butler s... Soundtracks to films often strive to represent the themes and feeling of the film, and direct the audience towards particular emotions. A good soundtrack not only allows for the listener to understand the film better, but it should also bring to mind particular scenes, images, or characters. Soundtracks for books can do the same. In my creation of a soundtrack for Octavia E. Butler s Parable of the Sower, I strove to encompass Lauren s journey throughout the novel and the various emotions that she experiences. Since Lauren is reflecting on her experiences, her journey becomes central to how the audience feels and experiences the emotional aspects of the book. The songs not only represent Lauren, but also the entire feel and theme of the text. The songs follow along with Lauren, with her despair, death, and the need for survival. As I scoured through song after song, I tried to connect each song choice with a particular moment in Lauren s story and the hopelessness of a dystopian future Butler warns her audience about. The first track is Things We Lost in the Fire by the band Bastille, and is one of the more literal song selections about the event that triggers the rest of the events in the story to occur: the death of her father, the pyros, the destruction of her community. The song is literally about things that burn up and leave, never to be seen again. Fire plays a key role in the fear aspect of the book; fire is synonymous with chaos. Not only does the song ...
