The Stock Market Theory Of Merger
Outline the stock market theory of merger and set out its predictions about the effect of merger on
post merger profitability. What does the empirical evidence on mergers show about the gains from
merger? In light of your analysis what policy recommendations would you make for policies to
control mergers and take overs.
In the vast and voracious business world, attention from media as well as corporations themselves
have been predominantly focused on the phenomena that is mergers and acquisitions, undoubtedly
due to the sheer volume and frequency of merger and acquisition activity in the past couple of
decades. Yet, societies appetite analyzing mergers have been documented as far back as the merger

James Tobin theorized that firms would continue to invest as long as the values of their shares
exceeded the replacement cost of their assets, therefore highlighting that the market value of a
firm equals total asset replacement cost (Tobin 1958). Furthermore, market value of a firm to
net replacement cost Is best expressed in relation to Tobin s Q equation where if Q value is
greater than 1, then a firm should consider expansion and growth as profit derived from net
assets should exceed the total cost of assets because if Q is a measurement of performance then
takeover returns are larger if the target is performing poorly, and the bidder is performing well
(Servaes 1991). Contrastingly, if the Q value was lower than 1 , the firm would be better off
selling its assets as monetary value of the assets are more than the value of retaining them .
According to neo classical economic theory mergers occur from a result of profit maximizing
behavior where rationally companies merge to gain a competitive advantage in the market place,
recognized by the extent to which the company has acted out its synergy basis which is the idea
that by combining business strategies and activities, performance will increase and efficiency will
lead to cost reduction due to the essential notion that a business will intend to merge with another

Perception Is A Important Process For Human Beings
Countless data pass through our minds every single moment. Consider about height, colour, size
and even message from actual language or body language, those are information we perceive
everyday as usual. Perception is a very important process for human beings because it is a
process that allow us to experience any data around us such as smell, touch, taste, temperature and
so on. (Otara, 2011) As we perceive things, we collect data, we analyse it and interpret data in our
minds in order to give the reaction back. However, sometimes we might face some situation that
we think we already have a conclusion or outcome to some cases or some particular situations in
our mindwithout receiving all of the information first. This cognitive process is called bias which
means the process of using shortcut to see the outcome based on personal preferences without
using all of information. This is not unfamiliar process to human beings because this process
used to help us in order to survive through many eras. (Ross, 2011) For instance, you see a black
shadow diving to your head so, you duck your head to avoid it. After that, you see that it s just a
bird. (Ross, 2008) Before you duck your head, you didn t look at it well enough that means you
didn t use all of information before react to the situation also you might face with these experiences
before so you know it is safe to avoid at first. However, your bias is still useful because what if it s
not a bird but a heavy object? You could

Brent Staples is an African American male, who was born in 1951 in Pennsylvania. Brent
Staples Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space is about how he, a black male is
perceived in public. One night he was walking down an empty street in a poor section of
Chicago and sees a young white woman in front of him. They peacefully walk for a while until
the woman turns around and sees Brent, a tall, broad black male behind her. Brent then notices
that picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest . He then wondered why the woman ran
and thought they she probably assumed that he could have been a mugger, rapist, or worse. He
then became embarrassed and felt as if he was a criminal. He soon became accustomed to hearing

Behavior-Specific Praise
Teachers of students with or at risk for emotional or behavioral disabilities (EBD) face countless
stressful professional challenges throughout their careers. Students with EBD are being scattered
amongst General Education classrooms and can often exhibit behavioral changes in which many
teachers who have not had proper training or experience in managing may find overwhelming. One
strategy to help maintain engagement and reduce behavioral challenges in a classroom that
includes students with or at risk for EBD is to increase the rate of BehaviorSpecific Praise (BSP).
Offering students praise in the form of a statement which explains which acceptable behavior they
are being praised for can enhance the student s ability to remain on task and engaged in classroom
activities and discussions. Professional development in the area of BSP is necessary in developing
teachers who are more prepared to effectively face the challenges of having students with EBD.
Many strategies have been suggested for training teachers in the use of BSP, each with different
methods of presenting the information to educators. The researchers in this study believe that
further training in BSP is needed in order to produce positive... Show more content on

The percentages of on task behavior were averaged out in order to produce a correlation between
teacher rates of BSP and the student engagement, and the majority of the findings produced a
strong positive increase in on task behaviors as BSP was increased. Teachers were asked, following
the study, if the training they received was useful. Teachers reported that the likelihood of
continuing to utilize the BSP strategy was high, and that they would be reporting the positive
results in their classrooms to their colleagues as well. A more interesting response from teachers
was that, despite the effectiveness of BSP, they found it difficult to execute the

Pulgas Ridge Research Papers
While hikers and dog walkers may have territorial and philosophical conflicts in some locations,
Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve seems to comfortably accommodate both groups in a small
park with ridge top views, cool canyons, and streamside thickets, mixed oak woodland, chaparral,
and abundant wildflowers. Dogwalkers are provided with a large off leash area where their canine
companions can romp unimpeded; hikers have access to interesting trails that see few dogs or
other hikers. Pulgas Ridge is a 366 acre parcel that is part of the Mid peninsula Regional Open
Space District. In a previous incarnation, it was the site of the Hassler Health Farm, a tuberculosis
sanitarium built and owned by the City of San Francisco beginning in 1927, but closed in 1964.

hikers, the best option is to take the Dick Bishop trail immediately to the right. The little used

Byzantine Empire Strengths
The definition of Byzantine is of, relating to, or characteristic of the ancient city of Byzantium .
(cite def.) The Byzantine Empire was an Empire located in Constantinople, Rome. This Empire had
a heavy influence on politics, economics and religious issues. The Byzantine Empire had many
strengths and weaknesses. Some strengths were political, military and economic strengths. The
strengths benefited the empire in many ways. One way the Byzantine Empirewas benefited by their
strengths was by the ability to survive. The weaknesses were the conflict that devastated the empire
such as the iconoclastic controversy. The iconoclastic controversy pulled the Byzantine Empire
apart and created a rebellion. Another weakness was the dependency the Byzantines had on their
allies this caused the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. This essay will consist of Political strength,
military strength, economic strength, the religious importance to the Byzantine people, how icons
were introduced, start of the controversy, during the controversy, after the controversy and the
collapse of the Byzantine Empire.
The Byzantine Empire s political strength was one of the reasons why the empire lasted for more

Byzantines were iconoclasts and they felt that icons created idol worship, and felt that anyone who
worshiped icons should be persecuted. The iconoclastic controversy lasted for more than a century.

Victim Blaming Sociology
The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The
tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of
reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people
get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so
when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the
world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a
convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the
possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on

It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in
group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in
group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia
Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of
misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the
victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas,
2012).
Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to
alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of
mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that
a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with
situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in
a positive mood is less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is
more likely to engage in victim blaming.

Analysis of Consolation in Hades Bosom Poem
To begin with, this essay must summarize the poem s story written by the poet. At the very
beginning, the first stanza presents someone who has disappeared from this world. The second
stanza tells us about a woman who has lost something or someone really important, and how this
affects her emotional state. Later on, the poem goes deeper in the woman s feelings of desolation.
In stanzafive, the poem explains the journey taken by the woman, in order to find the body of her
loss, ending up with the encounter to a witch. The next stanza clarifies that she has found Hades
world and not a witch, it describes the meeting and introduces the next stanza. Then, it is exposed
what Hades told her, stating that her son (only at this stanza, this is clearly stated) is death
somewhere they both know. Finally, the last stanza presents the resolution of the story, when the
woman finds the dead body of her son and also what she has been aiming for during the journey:
relief.
Afterwards, this essay must analyze the poem in terms of form. 8 stanzas, all quatrains, except
stanza two and eight, which are quintets, compose it. Probably this distinction on extent is parallel
to the relevance of those stanzas within the composition. As we can notice in stanza number 2, the
old woman realizes her recent loss and it is the first emotion shown in the poem. On the other hand,
the last stanza is more clearly shown why it uses 5 lines instead of 4, and it also has relation with
the significance in the

The Applications of Typical as-plasma-sprayed...
Typical as plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings along the thickness have an internal
gradient structure and chemistry [Rs]. The thickness gradient structure extends from amorphous
base to crystalline surface. During plasma spraying, the amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)
base is formed by rapid cooling of external molten part of flying HA spray powder particles upon
impact on cold substrate. If the flying HA spray powder particles are heated in plasma jet above
1843 K, but below 1973 K, the ACP, tricalcium phosphate(TCP) and tetracalcium phosphate
(TTCP) will co exist in close proximity within rapidly quenched structure [Rs]. If overheating
temperatures are higher than 1973 K, the CaO will be additionally present. The CaO containing
ACP phasecan be considered as hydroxyl deficient phase because it is formed from a melt which
has experienced the highest temperatures in plasma jet ( 1973 K) [Rs]. The ACP, TTCP and
CaO produce an increase of the Ca/P molar ratio in the near interface region of the as plasma
sprayed HA coatings, which is known as the Ca/P ratio gradient [Rs].
Considering the applications of HA coatings as medical implants, the thickness gradient structure is
unfavorable. The crystalline surface promotes poor initial bone fixation and the ACP base imparts
low structural integrity of the HA coatings [Rs]. The last is of particular importance because a
brittle nature of the ACP phase has been frequently held responsible for deterioration of the HA
coating s

Why Was Ancient Greek Culture Important
The Importance of Ancient Greek Culture
The ancient Greeks were unquestionably a gargantuan reason that today s civilizations are
remarkably developed. Their ideas have affected multiple generations. In many ways too. For
example their political, religious, and economic structures have all altered the United States and
even the world. These three aspects are just a few instances of the importance of Ancient Greece.
These, however, are the main reasons that Ancient Greecewas so esteemed.
One aspect of culture that was essential in ancient Greece was politics. Before most of ancient

This is displayed in Sophocles s play where the text reads: You know your orders: take her to the
vault and leave her alone there. And if she lives or dies, that s her affair, not ours: our hands are
clean . Creon had enough trust in the gods that he decided to basically force Antigone to pray to
the gods to let her live. She was left in a vault where she had no contact with anybody. While
some Greeks did believe in the gods to a great extent, there is also evidence that most of them did
not. Many of Greeks did not regularly pray to the gods. This is proven in the quote: ...it is easy
to overlook the fact that most Greeks believed in their gods in roughly the modern sense of the
term and that they prayed in a time of crisis not merely to the relevant deity... . This evinces that it
was only crucial to pray when there was a crisis or vital problem. Obviously, it is clear to see that
religion was important to the Greeks, but another aspect that was important was the economy.
Finally, the economic aspect of ancient Greece was important to the Greek culture. If a Greek had
more wealth, it would display that they had more authority and power than other poorer citizens.
Sophocles 441 B.C. play Antigone explains, however, in the quote, ...the wisest have sometimes
been known to count a few coins too many. Creon contrastingly expresses his idea of wealth. He
clarifies that the economic system is imperfect and should be improved. He basically explains that

Structural And Electrical Properties Of Pva Ag...
Structural and electrical properties of PVA Ag nanocomposite films
A .G. El Shamy, and W. Attia and K.M.Abd El Kader *,
Physics Department, Faculty of Science, Suez Canal University, Ismailia, Egypt
ABSTRACT
In the present work, PVA Ag nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant silvercontent
(0.4 wt. %) and with different time of reaction (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical
reduction method. Structure, surface topology, photoluminescence and electrical properties of PVA
Ag nanocomposite were studied using x ray diffraction (XRD), electrometer, atomic force
microscope (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the
prepared nanocomposites. X ray patterns showed the existence of Ag nanoparticles within the PVA
polymeric matrix with face centered cube (FCC) phase. It was found that the PL intensity for all
samples increases, while the root mean square (rms) roughness decreases as the time of reaction is
increased. Current voltage characteristics were analyzed to explore carrier transport mechanisms in
Ag PVA nanocomposite and the results showed that there is an improvement in the electrical
conductivity of the PVA Ag films and Frank poole emission is the prevailing transport mechanism
for all samples.

Kitty Genovese Study
While in the grocery store check out line, the woman in front of you drops her coin purse. You
stop and look at her and are conflicted on whether or not to help her clean up the mess.
Everyday, people witness another person needing help. The reasoning that causes one person to
help may stop another from helping, whether it is time, convenience, or maybe sincerity.
Throughout our history, there have been multiple studies on what makes a person more prone
to help than another person. With this research study, we can decipher what makes or prevents a
person from helping another. By conducting this study, we may be able to provide input for
some people on why another person is more likely to help than per say, they are. Darley and
LatanГ© (1968) established a study over the Kitty Genovese case from the 1960 s. Darley and
LatanГ© (1968) decided to come up with a study to test multiple participants and see if the
number of witnesses around an emergency affects a person helping during the emergency.
Darley and LatanГ© (1968) determined from the results that the number of bystanders does in
fact affect if a person helps. Darley and Batson (1973) also conducted a study on helping
behaviors in people. Darley and Batson (1973) gathered 3 hypotheses for this specific study;
they hypothesized that people who were in a rush were less likely to help than people who were
not in a hurry. They also hypothesized that people who were thinking religious thoughts would

As a result, those companies pay substantially less for health care and enjoy productivity levels
that are the envy of their peers. So why haven t more businesses adopted this highly effective
approach? PARADIGM SHIFT Before business leaders or HR professionals can even contemplate
a fresh approach to controlling health care costs, they have to be open to looking at the facts
surrounding the problem in a new light. In other words, they have to experience a paradigm shift. A
paradigm shift isn t easy to accomplish. As human beings, we are creatures of habit, and we re
accustomed to thinking in established patterns. Moreover, the current way of thinking about health

is reinforced by what practically everyone else says about the issue, from politicians to CEOs to

is to address the symptoms. But there is a new way to think about the problem of health care
costs, a way that puts the problem in a context in which it becomes clear that you can effectively
address it. And the good news is, there s nothing mysterious about it; it s perfectly logical and

Introduction
Lymphoma is the name of a diverse group of cancers of the lymphatic system, a connecting
network of glands, organs and vessels whose principle cell is the lymphocyte. When lymphoma
occurs, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally. They divide too rapidly and grow without
any order or control. Too much tissue is formed and tumors begin to grow. Because there is lymph
tissue in many parts of the body, the cancer cells may involve the liver, spleen, or bone marrow.
There are two general types of lymphoma which are Hodgkin s Lymphoma and Non Hodgkin s

unification of Germany and Italy occurred or know that Germany had to do many things to
achieve unification and ultimately start a war and use other wars to work towards the goal of
unification. Now looking at Italy in 1866 Italy signed a pact with Prussia promising support if
Prussia went to war with Austria. Prussia promised to get Venetia for Italy. Eventually several
months later, war between Prussia and Austria did happen. Austria was defeated by Prussia in the
Austro Prussian War. In the peace settlement, Prussia awarded Italy with Venice and the other
surrounding territories. They made Florence the capital of Italy. Wherefore Germany went to war
three times to achieve unification. The World Book encyclopedia says that for hundreds of years
Germany lived in separate states, one of the most powerful was the kingdom of Prussia. During the
late 1800 s, Otto Con Bismarck, the prime minister of Prussia, united most of these states and cities
under Prussian leadership. After Bismarck, German leaders tried

Media Influences On Our Perception, Knowledge, Attitudes,...
Media informs and influences us, as well as it impacts our perception, knowledge, attitudes, and
beliefs about certain things that take place. June 12, 2016 was a tragic night at Pulse, a gay
nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Omar Mateen, a 29 year old security guard, initiated a terrorist
attack, killing 49 people and wounding 53. He used an AR 15 style rifle and a handgun to carry
out the attack. The hate crime took place just shortly before the club was supposed to close.
When people started hearing bullets being shot, they started to hide under the bar, on the ground
of the dance floor, in the bathrooms, looking for exits wherever they could. This is one great
example of a tragic occurrence that received a great amount of coverage worldwide, and it
sparked a large amount of interest, reaction, and attention from people. I want to discuss five
articles specifically, published within a week s time of each other, that are written with different
intentions for different audiences. The first of the five articles would be an article published by
CNN on June 13, 2016 at 11:05am, Orlandoshooting: 49 killed, shooter pledged ISIS allegiance.
This article is very similar in context to an article published by NPR also on June 13, 2016 at

availability of resources for the most part, since they were published the day after the shooting, only
hours apart. The introductions are written in the

Essay On How Did The British Rule Of 1763
There were several major disagreements between the American colonists and British rule between
1763 and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The British, along with the colonists, had won a
costly war against the French and their Indian allies. It was during this time that England s views
of the New World had started to shift. Rather than focusing on the trade opportunities, more and
more policymakers concerned themselves with the land expansion of the British colonies. The
British also felt that the Americans were the primary beneficiaries of the war, and should help pay
for the debt. American colonists up until this point had been governed very loosely by Parliament
and were not receptive to the new laws, taxes, or the increased British... Show more content on

The Proclamation of 1763 was put in place to control and slow the westward expansion of the land
hungry American colonists. The British thought that a slow and limited westward expansion would
reduce the clashes with the Indians and also prevent migration away from the heavily invested
eastern seaboard. A demarcation line along the Appalachian Mountains was negotiated, somewhat
begrudgingly, with the Indians of the region. The Proclamation of 1763 was almost wholly ignored
by the colonists who continued to push west in search of new land. One of the biggest issues for the
British was the mounting debt incurred during the French and Indian war, along with the
maintenance of British troops garrisoned along the border of the Indian lands. The British made
several attempts to recoup monies from the Americans, the Stamp Act, the Townshend Duties, and
the Tea Act were among the most troublesome. The Stamp Act prohibited the Americans from
producing and using their own forms of paper currency, and required many printed materials in
America to be printed on paper purchased from England that was embossed with a

The Stories of Suffering During the Balkan War Explained...
In the 1990s, war engulfed the Balkans. Part of the purpose was a method called ethnic
cleansing and in that cleansing, thousands of women were raped and killed by Serb military
men. Part one of the Women War Peace special, titled I Came to Testify follows the process of
the international court of law as 16 women take the stand against the general during the war,
Ratko Mladic. The purpose of this documentary is to tell the stories of those who suffered during
the war and lived to tell their story and get justice for the heinous acts committed against them. I
believe that this documentary was very well done in showing the 16 women stand up for
themselves for the first time and break their silence years after the war. They only spoke,... Show

One thing I liked about this documentary was that it followed the stories of the women in the
Balkans and also had a male giving his story, which was interesting since the documentary was
about the torture of women. I think this added to the objectivity of the documentary because it
showed that they were getting the story from both males and females, since ethnic cleansing
happened to everyone. This documentary seems to point to the idea that the Serb men thought they
were superior to women, and they thought it was perfectly justified to rape the women, when in
fact, they are not superior to men in any way and the women did not deserve this treatment. One
interesting part of the trial in the documentary was that, when the wartime general was put on the
stand, he claimed that he unwillingly raped a woman because she was hinting at it herself, rather
than him advancing towards her. The lawyer questioned him, however, and was able to get the real
story out, but he still attempted to turn this on to the women. This disgusted me because in a court
where women are standing up for their rights against a man who is known to be guilty, he had the
courage to even try and blame the woman, who he took from her home, killed her family, and
threatened her, by saying she made advances at him. This documentary showed the terrible actions
done to women by the Serb military men in the Balkans during the war and ethnic cleansing. It
showed the women standing up for justice

The Massacre At Virginia Tech
The massacre at Virginia Tech is known as one of the deadliest shootings in the history of our
nation (History, 2011). This event that occurred on April 16, 2007 brought great pain to our
country but this was not a pain that was unfamiliar. Mass shooting is something that we as a
nation have dealt with for a while and on April 16, 2007 was no different. This massacre left 32
dead including the shooter himself, 23 year old, Seung Hui Cho. To really understand how to
put an end to mass shooting one must analyze what happened here it is necessary to look into
the shooters life and the victims he took. It is also important to know the events that lead up to
the shooting, what happened during the shooting and also after. Seung Hui Cho, known for
carrying out one of the most devastating madd murders in the US was born on January 18, 1984
in South Korea (Biography, 2014). Cho was always very quiet from the beginning. Cho s aunt in
South Korea shared that his resolute silences were a source of worrying for his mother at a
young age (NYTIMES, 2007). Cho and his family migrated to the United States when he was
eight years old. We thought that it would help the boy gain confidence if he moved to the United
States open society, said an Uncle of Cho s (NYTIMES, 2007). But they soon realized it didn t

The Debate Of The Tech Debate
MP 1.1 Rough Draft
The tech debate seems to never have a victor because there seems to be unending points of view
and evidence to support both sides. However, what seems to be true of those who support
technology and its benefits is they each have something different to say about its positivity.
Through Morozov we see the critiques of Carr and how the best way to view technology
criticism is to do it in the perspective of the evolution of tech, which gives us a broader
understanding. Through Crystal we see the benefits of technology and how it is far from causing a
downfall of the english language. Lastly, Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and current Vice
President at Intel discusses how technology is a way to spread stories and give us a background
into other people s lives. Although technology has considerably changed multiple aspects of our
society, it is not a detrimental piece of humanity, but rather something that has changed the way
humans interact and still further our understanding of each other. By showing the multiple
positions of Morozov, Crystal and a new source by Bell we can see that tech s impact should be
viewed through the multiple lenses, one of historical context, one of varying social/human context
and one of its sharing of ideas, all of which show the benefits of tech.
One of the lenses that gives us the most perspective about the technology debate is a historical one.
When looking at the tech debate in a historical context, it seems to be true that

Alone On The Yukon Trail
The man in this story has had a long and difficult journey, filled with emotional and physical pain.
The only company he had was a native dog who followed him everywhere he went. The cold air of
the Yukon trail presented a major problem for the man as he fought off frost bite. Throughout the
story he struggled against nature a lot. With ups and downs along the way, the weather was always
against him as he thought of ways to survive. In the end, nature won.
Alone on the Yukontrail, there was a man climbing in negative 50 degree weather. He did not
believe it when they said it would be that cold. As the temperature dropped below 50 degrees, the
man realized it was quite cold. The only thing to keep him warm was fire. He climbs for many
hours, trying to get back to camp and to the boys. However right now he was alone with a dog.
The only reason the dog stuck by him was so the man could make fire. The dog had learned about
fire, and it wanted fire. however the only way it could obtain fire is if the man made it. No matter
what happened the dog kept coming back for the fire. He walked as far as he could before he ...

Many readers of the book The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Nightime by Mark Haddon
may conclude that the father of Christopher is in the absolute wrong for hiding and lying about his
mother s death to Christopher. The father is doing his best to take care of a special kid who does
not fully understand human emotions and feelings which creates a barrier to the outside world. As
the book progresses the father does hit Christopher, but that is a simple reaction to Christopher s
persistent pushing around. Eventhough alcohol creates some of the anger in the father, the alcohol

Figure 1: The wide candle burning during the experiment
Introduction: This experiment aims to discuss whether the thickness of a candle influences the time
of burning. A candle burns by melting the waxnear the wick. This liquid wax is then drawn up the
wick by capillary action. The heat of the flame then vaporises the wax. Previous results showed that
wider candles burnt slower than thinner candles.
Aim: The aim of this experiment was to find out whether the thickness of a candle has an effect on
the time taken for it to burn down.

In The In The Knight, the knight is an epitome of human society, yet his appearance doe not

brief yet profound insight into the deceiving nature of humans; how we give a calm, collected
front full of light and purity, yet beneath the surface we are in truth dark and inevitably mortal.
The Knight portrays what every man, woman and child must inevitably decide on: to expose their
true face or to hide behind a false mask to please others. The initial line A knight rides into the
noon evokes a sense that the knight, a chivalrous and pure being, is riding gallantly into the noon,

The knight s only animate part of himself is his eye ; the rest is iron or steed. His body is a lump

shining appearance gives the illusion that the knight is a shining example of medieval society; a
pinnacle to aspire to, fit, mighty and strong. The reality is completely opposite; inside he is a
quivering pile of fat, robed with rags and tatters which clothe him beneath the metal suit. The
knight is no different from any other man, the battle wears his nerves to ribbons despite his
radiant appearance. He is nervous about the outcome of the battle, whether he will live to charge
gloriously into battle once again. Despite his steely skin, the knight is little different from the
lower classes of society, poor, almost naked and mortal. The knight cannot avoid the one fate that
envelops all mankind with his pure appearance, his fraudulent true self cannot be covered
fancifully with wooing society. Rich portrays a sense that although we all can all wear masks to
cover our true natures; we cannot hide forever behind this false front. If an enemy unhorse[s] this
rider and frees him between the walls of iron , what will become of the knight? His pure,
chivalrous, fake mask might be shattered and his true stout nature will be revealed to all, his

The tribe had a sacred temple that could only be opened with a special ruby crystal, which was

As a child, Ophelia was full of curiosity. She gaped at the ancient statues of her ancestors and

The Toronto FC and their Use of International Talent
INTRODUCTION
The Toronto Football Club (TFC) is a relatively new MLS franchise that has seen immense growth
in recent years which consequently makes it an excellent candidate for the analysis of the
underlying economic principles that govern its newfound success. One factor that makes the Toronto
FC so interesting is its unique labour market that highlights the distinct relationship between
labour supply and labour demand. It is well known that the MLS is one of the smallest sanctioned
professional level soccer organizations on a global scale. It is dwarfed by its European counter
parts in both viewership and revenue. However, in recent years there has been an unprecedented

an interesting situation. The franchises who can afford to purchase expensive all star international
players like the TFC will be able perform better. But smaller franchises that are less capable of

How Trade Policies Affect Economic Growth And Development
One puzzle of the world economy is that... Why are some countries so much richer than other? Or
to put it differently, why have some economies per capita income been growing at faster rates than
others? Most likely, there are numerous factors that play a role. This essay is an attempt to
enumerate and discuss at least some factors. A satisfactory understanding of economic growth also
requires an appreciation of how countries interact with each other, because countries income levels
are interdependent. Trade policies help foster these interactions between countries (and businesses).
The question of how trade policies affect economic growth and development has become a
controversial topic. After World War 2, colonial areas that gained independence after the war
believed they could reach higher income levels like their former colonizer only through rapid
government controlled industrialization. Many developing countries adopted measures intended to
reduce their independence on the export of primary goods (such as coffee, copper, and wheat).
The justification for such policies came from a belief that demand of primary goods to
manufactures would decline in the future due to technological progress in developed countries.
This idea came to be known as the Singer Prebisch Hypothesis. In other words, countries which rely
on exports of agricultural products would eventually grow less quickly than other countries whose
main exports were manufactured goods. Hence, the key to economic

Moral Courage In Roger Rosenblatt s The Man In The Water
People have moral courage whether they realized it or not. It is in our everyday lives and we
used it. Moral courage could be something small or big in different cases. The Man in the Water
is a Formal essay written by Roger Rosenblatt. It is about a plane crash in Washington D.C. and
an unknown man risked his life to save others. In The Man in the Water , Roger Rosenblatt:
moral courage is developed through the use of symbolism and conflict. Moral Courage is
developed through conflict which the main character goes against the opposing force. When the
plane crashed in the water, there were only a few survivors. Several people were surrounding the
plane crash site with news reporters and the police. The rescue helicopter came and tried to save
other people in the plane. When the helicopter came, the unknown man went around trying to
save the survivors. He came back in forth rescuing one people at a time knowing that he risked
his life. Every time they lowered a lifeline and flotation ring to him, he passed it on to another of
passengers (Rosenblatt). The man in the water fought against nature to save the people and he
put his fear a side. His enemy was nature and nature tried to took the survivor s lives away. He
put nature into a hold for a long moment to save other people. Near the end, he saved all of the

Ian s perspective, it is clear that he is endeavoring to understand both sides of the story. Ian s

Second, of the many symbolic objects in the Lord of the Flies is the conch shell. The white

civilization, and finally the extinction of all of the civilization on the island. With the discovery
of the conch shell it comes to symbolize the rise of civilization on the island. When Piggy
exclaims to Ralph Careful! You ll break it (15) as he goes to pick up the shell, it shows the
fragility of civilization and how one wrong move can shatter it. After that, Piggy then goes on to
explain how valuable the conch is and how much it would cost to purchase in a shop. He

just how precious civilization is to humans and the expense that the shell would bring in a shop
displays the price that many are willing to pay for civilization. Ralph and Piggy then decide to
use the shell to summon any other boys who are on the island. The shell is used to bring together

the creation of a key factor to its civilization. Once the group has been gathered, they begin to take

Economic Factors In The 17th Century And The Dutch East...
In the 16 and 17th century, and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was very profitable and a
large employer. They were also the world s largest commercial entity in the 17th and 18th century,
which employed approximately 30,000 people. They carried goods and slaves across the Atlantic
Ocean. One of the major historical significances of VOC is that they were the first country to build
an entire empire of trading in numerous countries. Their willingness to find the sailing routes,
turned out to be a great success, which opened a tremendous amount of opportunity for them to
trade, and VOC strategically took complete advantage of the opportunities. As with everything in
history, the results of the Dutch East India Companyare both good and bad. Investors formed the
first corporation with the joint venture stock company in 1602. They combined assets to gain
power, and they had a monopoly to trade with the Indies Asia and the Indian Ocean. Their motive
was profit; they fixed prices. The Dutch East India Companys had an immoral side as they could
get countries to trade goods against their will with either by persuasion or violence. The VOC was
lawless and protected and built up its monopoly. Dutch financial power is still powerful today. The
economic philosophy of mercantilism grew and presumed the world s wealth was fixed, it didn t
matter that one county could suffer economically at the expense of another (Pollard, pg.xxxxx).

The Effect Of Pictorial Condition And Verbal Condition Essay
The effect pictorial condition and verbal condition have on the number of correct responses in a
memory test
Abstract
The aim of the experiment was to test whether pictures or words would lead to an increased
recognition response. The picture superiority effect suggests that pictures are better recognised
than words. This is shown by supporting researchers. Standing et al (1970) found that participants
who studied over 2000 pictures, 90% of those had accurately recognised them after several days.
Paivio had also suggests that pictures are dual coded which explains why pictures are better
remembered than words, which is encoded once in memory. In order to investigate whether pictures
or words are best recognised participants were split into two conditions, pictorial and verbal. In the
verbal condition participants saw words after being presented with pictures for 10 seconds whilst
the pictorial condition saw pictures. This therefore measured the participants correct recognition
response in both the pictorial condition and verbal condition. The participant completed 48 trials in
each condition.

new experiences and form new relationships. (Mastin, L. 2016)

Self Defense In To Kill A Mockingbird
In this week s section section of To Kill A Mockingbird our mystery man who killed Mr. Robert

Instead of just appreciating that his kids are okay. For example in the text it says, It ll come

The Unknown Citizen By Auden
The Unknown Citizen, written by W. H. Auden, is a poem that describes a man who lived a life
most people would see as ideal. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him
to do, which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way.
Some may see the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because
he did exactly what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or
making a change, the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Audens poem can

least two meanings within the poem. One person could see the poem as a description of a perfect
man while someone else could see the poem as a message to be unique and make a change in the
world. The man in the poem fulfilled society s expectations, but at the same time, the man may not
have had a fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. Other
readers may discover their own meanings or explanations of the poem. Overall, the speaker in The
Unknown Citizen describes the life of an unknown man, but the reader must decide the message

Harry Hopkins Contributions
Abstract
This paper will explore three important aspects that Harry Hopkins achieved in this social work
career. Fist the path he took in working within the social work field, second the contributions he
made and lastly how his work could inform individuals working in the practice of a social
worker. Utilizing eight different articles, this paper will explore the life of Harry Hopkins and
how he had an account of the impact on public policies here in the United States, and how no other
social worker has had the influence in changing the direction of American social policy.
Keywords: paths, contributions, inform the social work now Social Work and Social Change
In the year 1926, Harry Hopkins, who was the Director of the New York Tuberculosis Society, who
would go on to be one of Franklin D. Roosevelt s closest advisors and became a designer of the
New Deal. Harry Hopkins wrote, The field of social work and public health are inseparable, and
not artificial boundaries can separate them. Social work is interwoven in the whole fabric of the
public health movement, and has directly influenced it at every point (Hopkins, 1926). A review
of social work s past and current efforts can highlight its contemporary value. Hopkins believed
that there was a creative understanding in face to face relationships. The immediate problems of
this Association of social workers explain Kurzman (1977) is to bring together social work and

Case Study Of Tata Docomo
Tata DoCoMo launched its operations on June 24th, 2009 in Chennai, its unique selling proposition
was the one paisa per second billing plan for telephone calls. Anil Sardana who was the then
managing director at TTL, made the first call under the new tariff system that day to telecom
minister Adimuthu Raja. Ratan Tata, Tata Group
s chairman at that time, said at the launch that the
per second tariff plan will create a paradigm shift for the phone users.
Sandhu studied various markets and similar tariff schemes before launching per second plan. One
such scheme was by the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Co., which operated under the Du
brand in Middle East. But this had not achieved much success due to lack of adequate marketing
support system.
The company launched TV and print advertisements with catchy taglines such as Second is the new
minute . Within five months of the launch Tata DoCoMoattracted 10 million customers. Three
fourths of them came from other operators. Soon, all operators including market leaders Bharti
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular launched per second plans and a major tariff war erupted in the
telecom industry that had far reaching effects.
Here Tata Docomo was at an expanding stage. The offers it provided gave them good feedbacks
and it flourished in the market.

Aspartic Acid Synthesis Essay
Aspartame is a widely used artificial sweetener that is approximately 180 200 times sweeter than
sucrose, natural sugar. Because of this, it is typically used in foods and beverages branded as diet
(Humphries, Pretorius, and NaudГ©, 2008). As time passes, more and more studies are being
conducted on the harmful effects of this food additive on astrocytes and neurons. When ingested,
aspartame is metabolized into phenylalanine (50%), aspartic acid (40%), and methanol (10%),
which each affect neuronal cells differently (Ashok, Sheeladevi, and Wankhar, 2014). According to
Rycerz and ElЕјbieta Jaworska Adamu (2013), the excess phenylalanine blocks the transport of
amino acids, glutamine, histidine, methionine, serine, threonine, tyrosine and tryptophan,... Show

Aspartic acid is a precursor to the commonly used amino acid and neurotransmitter, glutamate.
Glutamate is typically present in the body for neurons to use, but the excess glutamate presented
from the breakdown of aspartic acid causes over excitation of amino acid receptors, EAAT 1
(GLAST), EAAT 2 (GLT 1) and EAAT 3 (Rycerz and ElЕ
јbieta Jaworska Adamu, 2013). Excitation
of these receptors induces fast, constant action potentials and release of neurotransmitters at the
axon terminal; this requires both the depletion of the cell s ATP storage and the uptake of Ca2+
ions (which leads to the release of the neurotransmitters). However, an influx of calcium ions in a
cell can lead to mitochondrial calcium overload the subsequent permeabiltiy of the mitochondrial
membrane. Eventually, the cell membrane will permeate as well and reactive oxygen species
(ROS) will be released, causing oxidative stress and further damage to surrouding neurons (Ghandi
and Ambrov, 2011). This phenomenon is known as exocytoxicity and is directly responsible for the
death of dopaminergic neurons, which leads to decreased dopamine levels, decreased
communication from the substantia nigra, and, likely, Parkinson s Disease. The last metabolite,
methanol, may cause harm to neurons as well by inducing metabolic acidosis from the conversion
to formic acid, though it likely does not have a major

My Childhood Memories Of My Grandfather And Me
Some of my favorite childhood memories are of my grandfather and me. One could say that we
had a tradition. Often, he would pick me up from gymnastics and go through the drive through of
McDonald s to get me a chocolate shake. And during the trip to his house, we would talk about our
day and the exciting things that had occurred. Although we talked about many different things on
our way to his house, we always sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I remember looking out the
windows while we sang and admired the beauty of the night. Coming up to the big red barn I knew
that we were almost there. My grandparents lived near Saint Peter, Minnesota on Lake Washington.
And every night after eating dinner, we would make a fire, look out upon the... Show more content

Rushing by, nurses and doctors ran to the aid of their patients. I had been in hospitals many times
as a child. Because of this, I associated hospitals with happiness and healing. I always loved
visiting my mom and seeing the newborn babies. They were so innocent and precious. But walking
through the hospital this time was completely different. I didn t see the smiling faces of my family s
coworkers and the families waiting weren t there to celebrate. I was on my way to see my
grandfather and that one fact made everything different. The air was thick with sadness and
anticipation. I sluggishly walked down the hall and entered the elevator. I remember all the
tubes connected to him and all the machines he was attached to. His face discolored and his
body clothed in a white hospital gown. It was so strange to see my lovely grandfather look so
vulnerable and sick. I felt so powerless seeing him there. I wanted to speak to him, but I couldn t
conjure any words. My throat was in a knot and my lungs felt heavy. I cannot remember the last
time I felt so suffocated.
The car ride home felt like eternity. My mother and I cried the whole way. My pain fueled anger
inside of me. But everything was abruptly stopped when my mother began to play Undone by

At the time, I didn t understand the power and the meaning in the song. However, I knew that

Lack Of Freedom In America Essay
War, Slavery, Sexism, and Lack of freedom, these were the issues America has faced that put our
country through an uproar. Present day America has been through several trials and tribulations in
the past to get to the peaceful state it is today. Throughout the course of time America has been hit
with unfortunate periods of feuds with countries near and far, determining how little freedom you
have based on your genderor race, and in most cases having the government dictate what happens
in your life. Despite our hardships, America took baby steps to improve its country. These little
and small changes brought us on the journey to turn America into the powerful nation it is now.
American history gave us hope for the future. America began as thirteen small colonies under
the rule of Great Britain. As time progressed we as colonies decided that being under Great
Britain s rule was toxic and we needed to be our own country. Our decision to declare our
freedom turned American from partially peaceful colonies to a post apocalyptic wasteland. Our
fight towards Great Britain brought disease, death, and in some cases defeat. This fight was cost
families everything. America also has a deep history with the topic of slavery. African citizens
would be captured and brought against the will to America to be a Southern s slave. Slaves were
sometimes separated from their families, beaten, and killed. Alongside with people being
discriminated towards by their race, some were discriminated by

Dependency Theory Of Soft Power
After the explanation of soft power information, how does the soft power penetrate the media
content to others country? It is because of dependency theory. Dependency theory is basically a
domination theory/ system which makes the develop country get richer, and developing country get
poorer, and underdevelopment country remain poverty or maybe worse. As capitalism and
globalizationtake place, the ideas of globalization is about free flows of information, and cultural
exchange between nations, and open trade with others country. However, according to dependency
theory, which is about the develop country controls the whole market, while developing and
underdevelopment countries are rely on develop country.
There are four main theoretical clues for dependency theory. The first clue, structure of dependency
theory is center/core and periphery. The center countries are United States, Canada, United

their country pop culture to others country as what discussed in soft power. Media imperialism is
actually a sub from cultural imperialism . The difference between cultural imperialism and media
imperialism was, the cultural imperialism involve many aspects but not only media, it involves
religion, clothing, foods and etc. for media imperialism narrow down the focus which only media
ownership, international media flows, media structures, and the media content. In another words,

including high schoolers.
In an article by Judy blume (an author whose books have seen and abundance of censorship) wrote

The Help, By Kathryn Stockett
Originally a book written by Kathryn Stockett, The Help, was transformed into a film in 2011,
directed by Tate Taylor. Taking place in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi, the perspective
of (mainly) two middle aged negro maids (Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson) were recorded in
hopes of setting truth free. Miss Eugenia ( Skeeter ) Phelan, hopeful to be a journalist, claimed
that black lives were not as pleasant as portrayed, therefore she desired to reveal the truth behind
their lives through a book of interviews. The film, The Help, while not going in depth is quite
historically accurate through the depiction of social classes, racial segregation, the Jim Crow laws,
and the Civil Rights Movement (dealing with racism, violence, and homicide).... Show more content

However when writing her novel, Ms. Phelan s superior communicates to her that she has three
weeks to complete it in hopes before the movement is terminated. While many would say that
the Civil Rights Movement was barely covered in the film, this section alone utters a thousand
words. When Eugenia Phelan s supervisor, Elaine Stein, conveys to Phelan to speed her novel
up, then she is implying that the movement could pass at any moment. Implying that rather
instead of a movement, it was just a temporary period of uprisings. While Elaine Stein had all the
best intentions in assisting the blacks by publishing the book, what she said can be implied as
what numerous whites were thinking. With the Civil Rights Movement came a lot of violence
and murder. Medgar Evers was a prominent leader within the movement until Byron Beckwith
assassinated him in 1963 (A Critical Review of the novel The Help). In the film when Evers dies,
the bus let all blacks off, and then takes the rest of the whites home. Aibileen Clark scurries home
frightened for her life, so much so that she slips and injures her knee. This goes to not only
demonstrate the historical accuracy of the Civil Rights Movement and the death of a very hopeful
leader, but it also portrays the inequality that blacks were

The Social Hierarchy Of Julius Caesar
In every sense of life, there is a hierarchy. Every single being is constantly being compared to one
another until either or comes out on top. In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, there is no
denying the clear social hierarchy presented in the Roman Empire. Undoubtedly, the dictator of
Rome, Julius Caesar, sits at the very top of the social hierarchy at this time. Similarly to Caesar,
Jean Paul Marat, a politician during the French Revolution of 1789, is also considered on the more
elite half of the social hierarchy during that time. The social status of these two men didn t make
them any less susceptible to very real problems, including physical disabilities, murder and incontrol
of what happens after death. No matter what a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Marat was stabbed only once by a woman named Charlotte Corday. In The
Death Of Marat, a single puncture can be seen on his chest, with a scarce amount of blood running
down his torso, not nearly enough to be bathed in like Caesar was (David). Both of these men died
at the hands of another human by the act of getting stabbed.
After the murder of Caesar and Marat, the two would come to be portrayed in a certain manner.
Because of their status, these portrayals had long lasting effects when compared to the death of
someone lower in the social hierarchy. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus allows Marc
Antony to speak on Caesar s behalf in front of the citizens of Rome. Marc Antony says He was my
friend, faithful and just to me [...]When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept (Shakespeare.
III. ii. 85, 91). The word choice, such as faithful and wept , portray Caesar as kind and
vulnerable. Antony also adds Here is the will, and under Caesar s seal./ To every Roman citizen
he gives, /To every several man, seventy five drachmas. (Shakespeare III. ii. 240 243). After these
statements made by Antony, the people of Rome see Caesar as a once worthy human being who
cared about them. Marc Antony paints Caesar in a way that influences the Romans to mourn,
instead of celebrate, his death. This change of opinion causes the Romans to hate the

The Pros And Cons Of Gene Patents
Gene Patents: More Harm Than Good?
Michael Crichton and John E. Calfee explain the factors and outcomes that have come from gene
patents. While Crichton is against these patents, suggesting that patents are a barrier to research
and increase the cost of medical expenses, Calfee refutes these ideas; furthermore, the authors
disagree as to whether genes meet the criteria for a patent to begin with (Crichton, paras. 1 13)
(Calfee, paras. 1 6).
Innovation of research for diseases is a key part to their treatment, and Crichton and Calfee
disagree whether patents barrier this research. When an item or idea is patented it means it s
owned; therefore no one else can use it without the owner s permission. Michael Crichton discusses
how patents are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is one of the main points that Crichton uses to show that gene patents are unethical. Crichton
brings up breast exams. The exam can be done for $1,000, but because the gene involved is
patented, it now cost $3,000 (Crichton para. 2). In his article he states Couldn t somebody make
a cheaper test? Sure, but the patent holder blocks any competitor s test (Crichton para. 3). Since
the gene is patented, the owner has complete control of pricing making it impossible to make or
find a cheaper test. He also uses the example of Canavan disease. The owner of the gene
connected with Canavan s disease began to require that royalties be paid before tests could be
run. Calfee on the other hand discusses the case about breast exams and states that most patented
genes are owned by universities on behalf of researchers (Calfee para. 2). Calfee suggests that
because the patents are mostly owned publically, all testing can not be inflated and monopolized as
believed. He states, The other article concluded that prices of patented and exclusively licensed
tests are not dramatically or consistently higher than those of tests without a monopoly a very
different scenario from that suggested by the Myriad lawsuit (Calfee para.

The Importance Of Biblical And Historical Allusions In...
Allusions can influence the text in a variety of ways. Biblical and historical allusions are often the
most recognizable in literature and can have a variety of impact. Biblical and historical allusions
create an embellishment of imagery, characterization, and the manifestation of government. An
emphasis seen through allusions is in how imagery is portrayed. Bubbly Creek is described as
being constantly in motion, as if huge fish were feeding in it, or great leviathans disporting
themselves in its depths (pg 94). Sinclair used a biblical allusionto demonstrate imagery using a
leviathan, which is enormous monster first mentioned in later part of the book of Job in The Bible.
The leviathan is enormous and has an indescribable amount of strength and can penetrate a
double layer of armor. The contents of Bubbly Creek have an equivalency of a leviathan, which
shows how much power Bubbly Creek possesses; as well as how nothing else could ever equate
to it in size and its unrestrained moves. Another biblical allusion that Sinclair alludes to is the
Egyptian plague of flies in the book of Exodus and with the hot weather descended upon
Packingtown a veritable Egyptian plague of flies; there could be no describing this the houses
would be black with them (pg 104). Sinclair uses this allusion to exemplify how horrid the
conditions were in Packingtown, the plague of flies in The Bible is described as being so dense in
the Pharaoh s palace and the rest of Egypt was covered and

The Top Ten Most Twitter
Journalists can see which topics the audience is interested by looking at this information and
continue to report on these hot topics.
The top ten most followed twitter users are not media organizations or corporations, but individuals.
Researchers and Cornell and Yahoo analyzed how information spreads from media to the masses.
They found that a new class of semi public individuals consisting of authors, bloggers, journalists,
and subject matter experts have become part of an important niche on twitter. Opinion leaders are
more exposed to the media than their followers and are part of the intermediate layer. Around half
of the information originating from the media passes to the masses indirectly through the opinion
leaders (Wu, Mason, Hofman, Watts, 2011). Automated journalismis an important way technology
will change reporting. Algorithms have been able to automatically produce news from structured
data. Currently, algorithms can generate news for earthquake alerts, company earnings reports, and
crime reporting. The Los Angeles Times used an algorithm to provide comprehensive coverage of
homicides and not just focus on sensational cases. Another Los Angeles Time project, Mapping
L.A., uses algorithms to automate news generation regarding crimes and generates warnings when
crime reports surpass a predefined threshold. If the number of crimes reported that week is
significantly higher than the weekly average, the system will trigger a crime alert for that
neighborhood.

Andrew Shortland Archeology
Archeology is not as simple as looking at rocks and figuring out the past. Carbon dating and other
methods that can be used were further explained during this lecture. Other aspects of archeology
were also better elaborated during the talk as well.
The speaker, Doctor Andrew Shortland, told us a little story to begin his lecture and it was about
a man named George Green. His story began with George taking something to the museum and
that something was a valuable 1350 B.C. pop style egyptian mini statue. He brought it in and
offered it to the museum so they could display if to the public and of course get some money. As
the story goes the museum payed ВЈ440,000, which in U.S. currency would be about $556,903, as

Shortland went on he explained methods of finding out if artifacts were of that time, place, and
material the people used at the time. One of the methods he talked about was Carbon Dating,
which is a way of finding out an object s age by using properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive
isotope of carbon. A second way of finding out an artifact s date can be Potassium argon dating
which can be used to date extremely old artifacts up to 100,000 years old. The last method he
explained was Obsidian hydration dating which is used on artifacts made from volcanic glass. One
thing that got my attention were the machines they used to find their legitimacy, date, and so on
and one of them was a SEM EDS, scanning electron microscopy with x ray microanalysis. It is an
electron beam that scans across a sample s surface. After it scans completely it produces an
image or a sample s elemental composition. The 3 signals that provide the most information in
the SEM are the secondary electrons, backscattered electrons, and X rays. He also talked about an
XRF, X ray fluorescence, a non destructive analytical technique used to determine the elemental
composition of materials. The XRF analyzers determine the chemistry of a sample by measuring
the fluorescent X ray emitted from a sample when it is excited by a primary X ray source. Thirdly
he mentioned an XRD, X ray powder diffraction, which is a rapid analytical technique primarily
used for phase identification of a crystalline material and

This random sampling error indicated that there was no cross section of the target group
(generation Y) and in turn was a sample selection error. There were 3 respondents whose results
were not analyzed, as they did not fall into the target group of generation Y and this was an
administrative error. This is another common research problem is survey non response. Marketers
can unintentionally design surveys which many customers choose not to respond to.
Survey bias is the next potential survey research problem that can be likely to occur. In survey
sampling, bias refers to the tendency of a sample statistic to systematically over or under estimate
a population parameter. At the time of the survey, we are to assume that the chosen sample is the
representation of the Gen Y population and that information provided by the respondents is both
accurate and honest. It appears that there was a response bias due to the unconscious
misrepresentation and misplacement of the Pepsi logo at the top of the survey. This was
inadvertent but may have led to a response bias where the respondents appeared to have been
influenced by an auspices bias a bias in the responses of subjects caused by their being influenced
by the organization conducting the study (Zikmond et all, 2011).

  • 2. The Stock Market Theory Of Merger Outline the stock market theory of merger and set out its predictions about the effect of merger on post merger profitability. What does the empirical evidence on mergers show about the gains from merger? In light of your analysis what policy recommendations would you make for policies to control mergers and take overs. In the vast and voracious business world, attention from media as well as corporations themselves have been predominantly focused on the phenomena that is mergers and acquisitions, undoubtedly due to the sheer volume and frequency of merger and acquisition activity in the past couple of decades. Yet, societies appetite analyzing mergers have been documented as far back as the merger waves of 1898 1902 (Nelson 1959) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James Tobin theorized that firms would continue to invest as long as the values of their shares exceeded the replacement cost of their assets, therefore highlighting that the market value of a firm equals total asset replacement cost (Tobin 1958). Furthermore, market value of a firm to net replacement cost Is best expressed in relation to Tobin s Q equation where if Q value is greater than 1, then a firm should consider expansion and growth as profit derived from net assets should exceed the total cost of assets because if Q is a measurement of performance then takeover returns are larger if the target is performing poorly, and the bidder is performing well (Servaes 1991). Contrastingly, if the Q value was lower than 1 , the firm would be better off selling its assets as monetary value of the assets are more than the value of retaining them . According to neo classical economic theory mergers occur from a result of profit maximizing behavior where rationally companies merge to gain a competitive advantage in the market place, recognized by the extent to which the company has acted out its synergy basis which is the idea that by combining business strategies and activities, performance will increase and efficiency will lead to cost reduction due to the essential notion that a business will intend to merge with another ... • 3. Perception Is A Important Process For Human Beings Countless data pass through our minds every single moment. Consider about height, colour, size and even message from actual language or body language, those are information we perceive everyday as usual. Perception is a very important process for human beings because it is a process that allow us to experience any data around us such as smell, touch, taste, temperature and so on. (Otara, 2011) As we perceive things, we collect data, we analyse it and interpret data in our minds in order to give the reaction back. However, sometimes we might face some situation that we think we already have a conclusion or outcome to some cases or some particular situations in our mindwithout receiving all of the information first. This cognitive process is called bias which means the process of using shortcut to see the outcome based on personal preferences without using all of information. This is not unfamiliar process to human beings because this process used to help us in order to survive through many eras. (Ross, 2011) For instance, you see a black shadow diving to your head so, you duck your head to avoid it. After that, you see that it s just a bird. (Ross, 2008) Before you duck your head, you didn t look at it well enough that means you didn t use all of information before react to the situation also you might face with these experiences before so you know it is safe to avoid at first. However, your bias is still useful because what if it s not a bird but a heavy object? You could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Behavior-Specific Praise Teachers of students with or at risk for emotional or behavioral disabilities (EBD) face countless stressful professional challenges throughout their careers. Students with EBD are being scattered amongst General Education classrooms and can often exhibit behavioral changes in which many teachers who have not had proper training or experience in managing may find overwhelming. One strategy to help maintain engagement and reduce behavioral challenges in a classroom that includes students with or at risk for EBD is to increase the rate of BehaviorSpecific Praise (BSP). Offering students praise in the form of a statement which explains which acceptable behavior they are being praised for can enhance the student s ability to remain on task and engaged in classroom activities and discussions. Professional development in the area of BSP is necessary in developing teachers who are more prepared to effectively face the challenges of having students with EBD. Many strategies have been suggested for training teachers in the use of BSP, each with different methods of presenting the information to educators. The researchers in this study believe that further training in BSP is needed in order to produce positive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The percentages of on task behavior were averaged out in order to produce a correlation between teacher rates of BSP and the student engagement, and the majority of the findings produced a strong positive increase in on task behaviors as BSP was increased. Teachers were asked, following the study, if the training they received was useful. Teachers reported that the likelihood of continuing to utilize the BSP strategy was high, and that they would be reporting the positive results in their classrooms to their colleagues as well. A more interesting response from teachers was that, despite the effectiveness of BSP, they found it difficult to execute the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Pulgas Ridge Research Papers While hikers and dog walkers may have territorial and philosophical conflicts in some locations, Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve seems to comfortably accommodate both groups in a small park with ridge top views, cool canyons, and streamside thickets, mixed oak woodland, chaparral, and abundant wildflowers. Dogwalkers are provided with a large off leash area where their canine companions can romp unimpeded; hikers have access to interesting trails that see few dogs or other hikers. Pulgas Ridge is a 366 acre parcel that is part of the Mid peninsula Regional Open Space District. In a previous incarnation, it was the site of the Hassler Health Farm, a tuberculosis sanitarium built and owned by the City of San Francisco beginning in 1927, but closed in 1964. If you like, you can add to your hike by taking the Geraci trail east on its one mile journey back to where it branched off from the Woodrat trail. You have two other choices as well. If you have a well socialized dog you may want to head straight down the hill into the off leash area. For hikers, the best option is to take the Dick Bishop trail immediately to the right. The little used Dick Bishop trail winds downhill for .7 mile along the upper side of a canyon, starting in chaparral and ending among the coastal live oaks, blue oaks, and madrone. Edgewood County Park is the open space you view across the canyon to the south. • 9. Victim Blaming Sociology The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas, 2012). Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in a positive mood is less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is more likely to engage in victim blaming. Specific Aims/Research ... • 10. Analysis of Consolation in Hades Bosom Poem To begin with, this essay must summarize the poem s story written by the poet. At the very beginning, the first stanza presents someone who has disappeared from this world. The second stanza tells us about a woman who has lost something or someone really important, and how this affects her emotional state. Later on, the poem goes deeper in the woman s feelings of desolation. In stanzafive, the poem explains the journey taken by the woman, in order to find the body of her loss, ending up with the encounter to a witch. The next stanza clarifies that she has found Hades world and not a witch, it describes the meeting and introduces the next stanza. Then, it is exposed what Hades told her, stating that her son (only at this stanza, this is clearly stated) is death somewhere they both know. Finally, the last stanza presents the resolution of the story, when the woman finds the dead body of her son and also what she has been aiming for during the journey: relief. Afterwards, this essay must analyze the poem in terms of form. 8 stanzas, all quatrains, except stanza two and eight, which are quintets, compose it. Probably this distinction on extent is parallel to the relevance of those stanzas within the composition. As we can notice in stanza number 2, the old woman realizes her recent loss and it is the first emotion shown in the poem. On the other hand, the last stanza is more clearly shown why it uses 5 lines instead of 4, and it also has relation with the significance in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Applications of Typical as-plasma-sprayed... Typical as plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings along the thickness have an internal gradient structure and chemistry [Rs]. The thickness gradient structure extends from amorphous base to crystalline surface. During plasma spraying, the amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) base is formed by rapid cooling of external molten part of flying HA spray powder particles upon impact on cold substrate. If the flying HA spray powder particles are heated in plasma jet above 1843 K, but below 1973 K, the ACP, tricalcium phosphate(TCP) and tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) will co exist in close proximity within rapidly quenched structure [Rs]. If overheating temperatures are higher than 1973 K, the CaO will be additionally present. The CaO containing ACP phasecan be considered as hydroxyl deficient phase because it is formed from a melt which has experienced the highest temperatures in plasma jet ( 1973 K) [Rs]. The ACP, TTCP and CaO produce an increase of the Ca/P molar ratio in the near interface region of the as plasma sprayed HA coatings, which is known as the Ca/P ratio gradient [Rs]. Considering the applications of HA coatings as medical implants, the thickness gradient structure is unfavorable. The crystalline surface promotes poor initial bone fixation and the ACP base imparts low structural integrity of the HA coatings [Rs]. The last is of particular importance because a brittle nature of the ACP phase has been frequently held responsible for deterioration of the HA coating s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Why Was Ancient Greek Culture Important The Importance of Ancient Greek Culture The ancient Greeks were unquestionably a gargantuan reason that today s civilizations are remarkably developed. Their ideas have affected multiple generations. In many ways too. For example their political, religious, and economic structures have all altered the United States and even the world. These three aspects are just a few instances of the importance of Ancient Greece. These, however, are the main reasons that Ancient Greecewas so esteemed. One aspect of culture that was essential in ancient Greece was politics. Before most of ancient Greece had a democratic or oligarchical type of government, most of them were monarchies; in other words, they were governments controlled by kings. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is displayed in Sophocles s play where the text reads: You know your orders: take her to the vault and leave her alone there. And if she lives or dies, that s her affair, not ours: our hands are clean . Creon had enough trust in the gods that he decided to basically force Antigone to pray to the gods to let her live. She was left in a vault where she had no contact with anybody. While some Greeks did believe in the gods to a great extent, there is also evidence that most of them did not. Many of Greeks did not regularly pray to the gods. This is proven in the quote: ...it is easy to overlook the fact that most Greeks believed in their gods in roughly the modern sense of the term and that they prayed in a time of crisis not merely to the relevant deity... . This evinces that it was only crucial to pray when there was a crisis or vital problem. Obviously, it is clear to see that religion was important to the Greeks, but another aspect that was important was the economy. Finally, the economic aspect of ancient Greece was important to the Greek culture. If a Greek had more wealth, it would display that they had more authority and power than other poorer citizens. Attia and K.M.Abd El Kader *, Physics Department, Faculty of Science, Suez Canal University, Ismailia, Egypt ABSTRACT In the present work, PVA Ag nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant silvercontent (0.4 wt. %) and with different time of reaction (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical reduction method. Structure, surface topology, photoluminescence and electrical properties of PVA Ag nanocomposite were studied using x ray diffraction (XRD), electrometer, atomic force microscope (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposites. X ray patterns showed the existence of Ag nanoparticles within the PVA polymeric matrix with face centered cube (FCC) phase. It was found that the PL intensity for all samples increases, while the root mean square (rms) roughness decreases as the time of reaction is increased. Current voltage characteristics were analyzed to explore carrier transport mechanisms in Ag PVA nanocomposite and the results showed that there is an improvement in the electrical conductivity of the PVA Ag films and Frank poole emission is the prevailing transport mechanism for all samples. You stop and look at her and are conflicted on whether or not to help her clean up the mess. Everyday, people witness another person needing help. The reasoning that causes one person to help may stop another from helping, whether it is time, convenience, or maybe sincerity. Throughout our history, there have been multiple studies on what makes a person more prone to help than another person. With this research study, we can decipher what makes or prevents a person from helping another. By conducting this study, we may be able to provide input for some people on why another person is more likely to help than per say, they are. Darley and LatanГ© (1968) established a study over the Kitty Genovese case from the 1960 s. Darley and LatanГ© (1968) decided to come up with a study to test multiple participants and see if the number of witnesses around an emergency affects a person helping during the emergency. Darley and LatanГ© (1968) determined from the results that the number of bystanders does in fact affect if a person helps. Darley and Batson (1973) also conducted a study on helping behaviors in people. Darley and Batson (1973) gathered 3 hypotheses for this specific study; they hypothesized that people who were in a rush were less likely to help than people who were not in a hurry. They also hypothesized that people who were thinking religious thoughts would not be any more likely to help another person. The Effects Of The Unification Of Germany And Germany United I m going to talk about the unification of Germany and Italy and how these two places went about unification and how that affected Europe. Also, I m going to compare and contrast the effects that these two places unifying had on Europe. Before the French revolution both Italy and Germany were divided into many states, Germany was divided way more than Italy with more than three hundred states which had to have been harder to unite. Many people don t know about the unification of Germany and Italy occurred or know that Germany had to do many things to achieve unification and ultimately start a war and use other wars to work towards the goal of unification. Now looking at Italy in 1866 Italy signed a pact with Prussia promising support if Prussia went to war with Austria. Prussia promised to get Venetia for Italy. Eventually several months later, war between Prussia and Austria did happen. Austria was defeated by Prussia in the Austro Prussian War. In the peace settlement, Prussia awarded Italy with Venice and the other surrounding territories. They made Florence the capital of Italy. Wherefore Germany went to war three times to achieve unification. The World Book encyclopedia says that for hundreds of years Germany lived in separate states, one of the most powerful was the kingdom of Prussia. June 12, 2016 was a tragic night at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Omar Mateen, a 29 year old security guard, initiated a terrorist attack, killing 49 people and wounding 53. • 23. Essay On How Did The British Rule Of 1763 There were several major disagreements between the American colonists and British rule between 1763 and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The British, along with the colonists, had won a costly war against the French and their Indian allies. It was during this time that England s views of the New World had started to shift. Rather than focusing on the trade opportunities, more and more policymakers concerned themselves with the land expansion of the British colonies. The British also felt that the Americans were the primary beneficiaries of the war, and should help pay for the debt. American colonists up until this point had been governed very loosely by Parliament and were not receptive to the new laws, taxes, or the increased British... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Proclamation of 1763 was put in place to control and slow the westward expansion of the land hungry American colonists. The British thought that a slow and limited westward expansion would reduce the clashes with the Indians and also prevent migration away from the heavily invested eastern seaboard. A demarcation line along the Appalachian Mountains was negotiated, somewhat begrudgingly, with the Indians of the region. The Proclamation of 1763 was almost wholly ignored by the colonists who continued to push west in search of new land. One of the biggest issues for the British was the mounting debt incurred during the French and Indian war, along with the maintenance of British troops garrisoned along the border of the Indian lands. The British made several attempts to recoup monies from the Americans, the Stamp Act, the Townshend Duties, and the Tea Act were among the most troublesome. Part one of the Women War Peace special, titled I Came to Testify follows the process of the international court of law as 16 women take the stand against the general during the war, Ratko Mladic. The purpose of this documentary is to tell the stories of those who suffered during the war and lived to tell their story and get justice for the heinous acts committed against them. One thing I liked about this documentary was that it followed the stories of the women in the Balkans and also had a male giving his story, which was interesting since the documentary was about the torture of women. I think this added to the objectivity of the documentary because it showed that they were getting the story from both males and females, since ethnic cleansing happened to everyone. This documentary seems to point to the idea that the Serb men thought they were superior to women, and they thought it was perfectly justified to rape the women, when in fact, they are not superior to men in any way and the women did not deserve this treatment. One interesting part of the trial in the documentary was that, when the wartime general was put on the stand, he claimed that he unwillingly raped a woman because she was hinting at it herself, rather than him advancing towards her. The lawyer questioned him, however, and was able to get the real story out, but he still attempted to turn this on to the women. This disgusted me because in a court where women are standing up for their rights against a man who is known to be guilty, he had the courage to even try and blame the woman, who he took from her home, killed her family, and threatened her, by saying she made advances at him. This documentary showed the terrible actions done to women by the Serb military men in the Balkans during the war and ethnic cleansing. It showed the women standing up for justice ... • 26. The Debate Of The Tech Debate MP 1.1 Rough Draft The tech debate seems to never have a victor because there seems to be unending points of view and evidence to support both sides. However, what seems to be true of those who support technology and its benefits is they each have something different to say about its positivity. Through Morozov we see the critiques of Carr and how the best way to view technology criticism is to do it in the perspective of the evolution of tech, which gives us a broader understanding. Through Crystal we see the benefits of technology and how it is far from causing a downfall of the english language. Lastly, Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and current Vice President at Intel discusses how technology is a way to spread stories and give us a background into other people s lives. Although technology has considerably changed multiple aspects of our society, it is not a detrimental piece of humanity, but rather something that has changed the way humans interact and still further our understanding of each other. By showing the multiple positions of Morozov, Crystal and a new source by Bell we can see that tech s impact should be viewed through the multiple lenses, one of historical context, one of varying social/human context and one of its sharing of ideas, all of which show the benefits of tech. One of the lenses that gives us the most perspective about the technology debate is a historical one. When looking at the tech debate in a historical context, it seems to be true that ... Or to put it differently, why have some economies per capita income been growing at faster rates than others? Most likely, there are numerous factors that play a role. This essay is an attempt to enumerate and discuss at least some factors. A satisfactory understanding of economic growth also requires an appreciation of how countries interact with each other, because countries income levels are interdependent. Trade policies help foster these interactions between countries (and businesses). The question of how trade policies affect economic growth and development has become a controversial topic. After World War 2, colonial areas that gained independence after the war believed they could reach higher income levels like their former colonizer only through rapid government controlled industrialization. Many developing countries adopted measures intended to reduce their independence on the export of primary goods (such as coffee, copper, and wheat). The justification for such policies came from a belief that demand of primary goods to manufactures would decline in the future due to technological progress in developed countries. This idea came to be known as the Singer Prebisch Hypothesis. In other words, countries which rely on exports of agricultural products would eventually grow less quickly than other countries whose main exports were manufactured goods. Ian s view is that something lousy transpired, causing drama to compose in Grace s life, but he doesn t know who to believe at first. Ian then decides to heedfully listen to Grace s point of view and ultimately finds her side of the story more believable before even hearing Zac s side. He saw Grace get hurt from the conflict she is facing, so he feels that he has made the right decision, but it will continue to bother Zac. It is clear that Ian is in love with Grace at this point. He ultimately is endeavoring to believe her but feels that it is important to be there for his best friend. After all, listening to his side can help in solving this issue. They were also the world s largest commercial entity in the 17th and 18th century, which employed approximately 30,000 people. They carried goods and slaves across the Atlantic Ocean. One of the major historical significances of VOC is that they were the first country to build an entire empire of trading in numerous countries. Their willingness to find the sailing routes, turned out to be a great success, which opened a tremendous amount of opportunity for them to trade, and VOC strategically took complete advantage of the opportunities. As with everything in history, the results of the Dutch East India Companyare both good and bad. Investors formed the first corporation with the joint venture stock company in 1602. They combined assets to gain power, and they had a monopoly to trade with the Indies Asia and the Indian Ocean. Their motive was profit; they fixed prices. The Dutch East India Companys had an immoral side as they could get countries to trade goods against their will with either by persuasion or violence. The VOC was lawless and protected and built up its monopoly. Dutch financial power is still powerful today. • 39. The Effect Of Pictorial Condition And Verbal Condition Essay The effect pictorial condition and verbal condition have on the number of correct responses in a memory test Abstract The aim of the experiment was to test whether pictures or words would lead to an increased recognition response. The picture superiority effect suggests that pictures are better recognised than words. This is shown by supporting researchers. Standing et al (1970) found that participants who studied over 2000 pictures, 90% of those had accurately recognised them after several days. Paivio had also suggests that pictures are dual coded which explains why pictures are better remembered than words, which is encoded once in memory. In order to investigate whether pictures or words are best recognised participants were split into two conditions, pictorial and verbal. In the verbal condition participants saw words after being presented with pictures for 10 seconds whilst the pictorial condition saw pictures. This therefore measured the participants correct recognition response in both the pictorial condition and verbal condition. The participant completed 48 trials in each condition. Because of this, it is typically used in foods and beverages branded as diet (Humphries, Pretorius, and NaudГ©, 2008). As time passes, more and more studies are being conducted on the harmful effects of this food additive on astrocytes and neurons. When ingested, aspartame is metabolized into phenylalanine (50%), aspartic acid (40%), and methanol (10%), which each affect neuronal cells differently (Ashok, Sheeladevi, and Wankhar, 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aspartic acid is a precursor to the commonly used amino acid and neurotransmitter, glutamate. Glutamate is typically present in the body for neurons to use, but the excess glutamate presented from the breakdown of aspartic acid causes over excitation of amino acid receptors, EAAT 1 (GLAST), EAAT 2 (GLT 1) and EAAT 3 (Rycerz and ElЕ јbieta Jaworska Adamu, 2013). Excitation of these receptors induces fast, constant action potentials and release of neurotransmitters at the axon terminal; this requires both the depletion of the cell s ATP storage and the uptake of Ca2+ ions (which leads to the release of the neurotransmitters). However, an influx of calcium ions in a cell can lead to mitochondrial calcium overload the subsequent permeabiltiy of the mitochondrial membrane. Eventually, the cell membrane will permeate as well and reactive oxygen species (ROS) will be released, causing oxidative stress and further damage to surrouding neurons (Ghandi and Ambrov, 2011). This phenomenon is known as exocytoxicity and is directly responsible for the death of dopaminergic neurons, which leads to decreased dopamine levels, decreased communication from the substantia nigra, and, likely, Parkinson s Disease. Biblical and historical allusions are often the most recognizable in literature and can have a variety of impact. Biblical and historical allusions create an embellishment of imagery, characterization, and the manifestation of government. An emphasis seen through allusions is in how imagery is portrayed. Bubbly Creek is described as being constantly in motion, as if huge fish were feeding in it, or great leviathans disporting themselves in its depths (pg 94). Sinclair used a biblical allusionto demonstrate imagery using a leviathan, which is enormous monster first mentioned in later part of the book of Job in The Bible. The leviathan is enormous and has an indescribable amount of strength and can penetrate a double layer of armor. The contents of Bubbly Creek have an equivalency of a leviathan, which shows how much power Bubbly Creek possesses; as well as how nothing else could ever equate to it in size and its unrestrained moves. Another biblical allusion that Sinclair alludes to is the Egyptian plague of flies in the book of Exodus and with the hot weather descended upon Packingtown a veritable Egyptian plague of flies; there could be no describing this the houses would be black with them (pg 104).
