Designing A Creative Letterhead In Word 2010

Editor's Notes

  1. Today we are going to design a letterhead file that can be used as needed. This is a great cost-saving alternative for an individual or a small company that may not need reams and reams of expensive, preprinted stationary.
  2. The complete address should include the street address, building, room number, post office box, city, state, and zip code. Another common aspect of letterhead is a unique logo or image. If the letterhead is personal, be sure to pick something that expresses your personality or goals.
  3. Wherever you choose to place your elements, they should include fonts that are easy to read.Consider giving your name or the company’s name greater impact by making the text larger, bolded, italicized, or in a contrasting color. Make sure the colors compliment each other or conveys your goals or those of the company. For example, if making a letterhead file for a eco-friendly company, consider using greens, browns, and oranges—colors that many people connect with environmental efforts.
  4. In our new document let’s begin by clicking on the Insert tab at the top of the page.
  5. The rectangle should approximately match the one in the book. .5” high by 7” wide. At the right side of the screen of the formatting tab, you can change the height and width of your rectangle.
  6. Right click the rectangle to show the shortcut menu and the Mini toolbar. Choose the “Add Text” option on the shortcut menu and type “Heartland Tractor Club” in the rectangle.
  7. To increase the font size of the Company’s name in the shape, we are going to use the “Grow Font” button on the Home tab. In the Font group, click on the large capital A with the little arrow that points up until the font size says 22.
  8. Select the Heartland Tractor Club text by highlighting it; then in the Font group, use the dropdown menu to select the Segoe Script font.
  9. On the Insert tab, click on the Clip Art icon, which brings up a search, drop down menu on the far right of the screen. In the “search for” field, type the word “tractor” and click on the “Go” button. The results will show up in the boxes below. Choose the first picture, the yellow tractor.
  10. Now to make this tractor fit into our letterhead: make sure the tractor is still selected and on the Format tab, click the Advanced Layout, Size Dialog box launcher. Scale the height to 35% of its original size.
  11. Make sure the tractor image is selected. Under the Format tab, click on the Color icon. A large dropdown menu with a variety of choices will appear. Click on the brown tractor to make it change from yellow to brown.
  12. Now that the tractor is brown, let’s move it up into the rectangle. First however, we have to edit the text wrapping or the tractor may disappear behind the rectangle instead of being inside it. Select the tractor clip art and in the Format tab, locate the Wrap Text button. Choose “in front of text” so that the tractor can be placed on top of the rectangle. We need to copy the tractor so that we can flip it and add it at the other end of the rectangle. First select the tractor image, on the Home tab choose “copy” to put the image on the Office Clipboard. Next, to paste the second tractor into the document, simply click the Paste icon in the Home tab. Another tractor image will appear near the original one. To flip it so it faces the company’s name, on the Format tab, in the Arrange group, find the Rotate icon. A dropdown menu showing various ways it can be rotated. Click on the “Flip Horizontal” to change the tractor’s direction. Now it can be moved into place on the right-hand side of the rectangle.
  13. To type the address, go to the Home tab and make sure the Center text button is selected in the Paragraph group. Then type the address in dark orange. To add the phone number and fax number, we first have to add a symbol: a small dot, to separate the address from the contact numbers. Under the Insert tab, at the far right, is the Symbols group. Scroll until you find the appropriate dot and click “OK”. This will insert 1 small dot. Repeat to add a second one.
  14. To add the final touch we are going to insert a line from the left to right margin, under the company’s contact information. To do this, we will add a Bottom Border to the area that contains the typing. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click on the Borders icon. Choose the border that shows a bold line on just the bottom. Does your line look like this?
