The European Unemployment Puzzle: implications from population agingGRAPE
We study the link between the evolving age structure of the working population and unemployment. We build a large new Keynesian OLG model with a realistic age structure, labor market frictions, sticky prices, and aggregate shocks. Once calibrated to the European economy, we quantify the extent to which demographic changes over the last three decades have contributed to the decline of the unemployment rate. Our findings yield important implications for the future evolution of unemployment given the anticipated further aging of the working population in Europe. We also quantify the implications for optimal monetary policy: lowering inflation volatility becomes less costly in terms of GDP and unemployment volatility, which hints that optimal monetary policy may be more hawkish in an aging society. Finally, our results also propose a partial reversal of the European-US unemployment puzzle due to the fact that the share of young workers is expected to remain robust in the US.

HighLights:
Indian Rupee rose for third consecutive day in Monday’s trade
US Labor Market Conditions Index was at negative 4.8-mark in May
German Factory Orders plunged by 2 percent in the month of April
Euro Zone Sentix Investor Confidence jumped to 9.9-level in June
Indian Rupee appreciated for third consecutive day and gained sharply by
28 paise to end at 66.97 against the US dollar on Monday. The currency
had appreciated on account of selling of dollars by exporters and banks.
Additionally, robust capital inflows into equities and debts also led to ap-
preciation in the Indian Rupee.
However, sharp upside in the currency was capped due to weak domestic
market sentiments. On the economy front, Raghuram Rajan is expected to
maintain status quo in its bi-monthly monetary policy review on Tuesday.
Indian Rupee moved in the range of 66.8625 to 67.0525 in Monday’s trad-
ing session. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reference rate for dollar was
seen at 67.96 and Euro stood at 75.94 on Monday.
US Dollar Index fell marginally in Monday’s trading session due to rise in risk appetite in global market sentiments which led to
decline in demand for the low yielding currency. Further, unfavourable economic data from the country kept pressure on the
currency.
US Labor Market Conditions Index was at negative 4.8-mark in May as against a fall of 3.4-level in April.
Euro against dollar gained around 0.1 percent on Monday on account of weakness in the dollar index coupled with mixed eco-
nomic data from the region. Further, upbeat global market sentiments led to positive movement in the currency.
German Factory Orders plunged by 2 percent in April as against a rise of 2.6 percent in March. Euro Zone Raw Materials Price
Index (RMPI) gained by 2.7 points to 50.6-mark in May from 47.9-level in April. Euro Zone Sentix Investor Confidence jumped
by 3.7 points to 9.9-level in June with respect to 6.2-mark in the last month.
The Sterling Pound rose around 0.5 percent in Monday’s trade on account of weaker dollar. Moreover, upbeat global market
sentiments led to positive movement in the currency.
The Japanese Yen against dollar depreciated around 0.75 percent in Monday’s trade due to rise in risk appetite in global mar-
ket sentiments which led to decline in demand for the low yielding currency.

2. Technical View:
The JPYINR price has been trading in rectangle pattern form
past few weeks and prices are facing resistance of its upper
band of channel pattern at 62.80 levels on hourly chart.
In addition, on four hourly chart price has formed bearish
harami pattern , which is bearish reversal pattern.
On hourly chart, momentum oscillator RSI has moved in over-
sold zone territory at 75 levels, which gives negative confir-
mation to the prices.
A momentum indicator MACD has shown negative crossover
on hourly chart, which indicates short term trend remains
bearish.
For now we expect prices to move lower towards 62.20 levels
in few trading sessions.

Technical View:
The price has been moving in its rising channel formation
from past few weeks and price has given breakdown of its of
its lower band of channel pattern at 67.30 levels on daily
chart.
Moreover, price have been trading below of its 21 daily expo-
nential moving average which suggest near term trend re-
mains down. So any rally in the prices towards 67.40 level,
used as selling opportunity.
A momentum indicator RSI has moved below 60 levels on
daily chart, which suggest bearishness in the prices.
A momentum indictor MACD has given negative crossover on
daily chart, which gives negative confirmation to the prices.
For now we expect prices to move lower towards 67.40 lev-
els in few trading sessions.
