Introduction
• It was made mandatory in National Policy on
Education,1986 to introduce CCE in schools as an
important step of examination reform and for the
qualitative improvement in the education system.
Concept of Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation
• It refers to a particular process of evaluation
which is school based and aims at all round
development of the student.
• This process includes continuity of testing with
reasonable intervals and covering different
aspects of curricular and co-curricular areas
so as to help the students.
KEY WORD: Continuous
• It refers to continuity and regularity of
assessment during the whole session.
• The frequency of class tests, unit tests and
terminal tests can make the evaluation regular.
• The tests may be followed by the diagnosis of
the hard spots of learners and remedial
intervention to correct them.
• Retesting and getting feedback may help the
teachers and for their self-evaluation.
Continuous Evaluation

Continuous Evaluation
KEY WORD: Comprehensive
• It refers to the areas of assessment which
includes both scholastic and co-scholastic
aspects of pupils growth helping the all round
development of the child.
• Scholastic aspect include curricular area or
subject specific areas and Co-scholastic
aspects include Life skills, Co-curricular
activities, Attitudes and Values.
Comprehensive Evaluation
Comprehensive Evaluation
Scholastic
Abilities
Co-scholastic
Abilities
Characteristics
• In scholastic aspect, cognitive growth in subject
specific areas are covered and in co-scholastic aspect
the growth in affective and psychomotor areas are
covered.
• The scholastic areas are meant for intellectual growth
whereas co-scholastic areas are required to develop
physical growth, development of social personal
qualities, interests, attitudes and values.
• The evaluation tools and techniques used for these two
areas are entirely different in nature. For instance, the
scholastic areas can be tested through written and
oral tests, whereas co-scholastic areas can be assessed
basically through observation and similar techniques.
Objectives of CCE
1) To make evaluation an integral part of teaching-
learning process.
2) To use evaluation for improvement of students
achievement through diagnosis and remediation.
3)To make sound judgment and take timely
decisions for learner’s growth, learning process,
learning pace and learning environment.
4) To maintain desired standard of attainment.
5) To provide scope for self-evaluation.
Nature of Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation
• CCE encourages and motivates students to be positive in
their attitudes.
• It emphasizes that teacher’s judgment should be made
through an honest and objective appraisal without bias.
• It also encourages continuous interaction with parents
with regard to their children’s progress and performance.
• CCE is developmental in nature because emphasis is
given on improvement of students’ learning throughout
the schooling process.
• It is a process of continuous attempts to assess whether
desirable changes are taking place in students along the
lines of educational objectives.
Purposes of Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation
• It reduces stress and anxiety, which often builds
up among the young students during and after
the examination.
• It reduces the dropout rate as there will be less
fear and anxiety among learners related to their
school performance.
• In CCE, greater focus is given on learning rather
than on conducting tests and examinations.
• It contributes to the holistic development of
learners.
Cont.,
• CCE is used as an instrument of preparing
learners for future life by making them
physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally
balanced and socially adjusted.
• Learners get more time to develop their
interests, hobbies and personalities through
CCE.
• It promotes a learner friendly environment,
thereby optimizes student learning.
Uses of CCE
• De-emphasis of memorization.
• Encouragement of comprehensive evaluation.
• Covering scholastic and co-scholastic aspects.
• Functional & meaningful declaration of results
for effective uses by all.
• Remedial/enrichment programme.
Cont.,
• Improvement in the mechanic of conducting
examination.
• Use of grade in place of marks in determining
the level of pupils’
• Performance and proficiency.
Continuous and comprehensive evaluation
