CONSTRUCTION OF DC MACHINE
 A transformer works on alternating current, while a DC machine works on Direct Current.

It has two main parts :
Stator – It is the stationary part. It does not move or rotate.
Rotor – It is the rotating part of the machine.

YOKE
• It is the outermost part of a DC motor. It is made of cast iron or cast
steel.
• It provides mechanical protection to the inner parts of the machine.
• Provide low reluctance path for the magnetic flux.
Pole core
• These are made of cast steel laminations.
• The main purpose is to hold the field windings .
• The end portion of the pole is called pole shoe.

• They are enameled copper wires wound around the poles
• When current passes through series connected windings then adjacent
poles attain opposite polarity
Armature
core
• This is the rotating part of the machine
• It is a cylindrical structure with slots around its outer periphery.
• It houses conductors in the slots.
• It provides easy path for magnetic flux

Armature
winding
• This winding is placed in the slots of rotor.
• Several turns of copper wire are wound through these slots
Commutator
• The Commutator converts AC to DC(Generator) and DC to AC (Motor)
• The Commutator is attached to the same shaft of the armature
• Made by hard drawn copper & have several copper segments insulated by mica.
• The armature winding is connected to the commutator segments.
Brushes
• They carry current to the armature (the rotating part).
• DC motor brushes are usually made by high grade carbon.
• It connects the rotating armature conductor to static external circuit(Source or
load)
Shaft
• The shaft in a motor is a cylindrical component made by mild steel with maximum
breaking strength.
• The purpose of the shaft is to transfer mechanical power from or to the machine.
• All rotating parts like armature core,commutator,cooling fans etc connected to it.

 Induction motor mainly consists of
two parts called as the Stator and
the Rotor
 The stator is the stationary part of
the induction motor, and the rotor is
the rotating part.
 The construction of the stator is
similar to the three-phase
synchronous motor.
 Three phase induction motor is self
start but single phase induction
motor is not inherently self start.
 In 95% (Approx.) three phase
induction motor is used due to
rugged construction, inherent self
start, low maintenance & reliable
operation.
Induction machine is called asynchronous machine.

(SHORT CIRCUITED)
STATOR CORE & ROTOR CORE
 The stator & rotor core are built up of high-
grade alloy steel laminations to reduce eddy
current losses.
 Stator & rotor have laminated type
construction. Stator made up of stamping
which are 0.3 to 0.5 mm thick.
 Its main function is to carry the alternating
magnetic field which produces hysteresis and
eddy current losses.
STATOR WINDING
 Three phase & Single phase windings which
are usually supplied from a three-phase &
Single phase supply system in 3 phase and 1
phase Induction motor.

 Construction of a Synchronous
Machine, i.e. alternator
or motor consists of two main parts,
namely the stator and the rotor.
STATOR
 The stator is the stationary part of
the machine. It carries the armature
winding in which the voltage is
generated or applied as generator or
motor.
ROTOR
 The rotating part of the machine is
called Rotor.
 There are two types of rotor
construction, namely the
(a) Salient pole type
(b) Cylindrical rotor type.
 Synchronous machine is a constant speed machine

Frame
• It is the outer body of the machine made of cast iron
• it protects the inner parts of the machine.

CORE
• The stator core is made of silicon steel material & number of insulated stamps
stacked to each other.
• The main purpose is to hold the windings .

Winding
• Enameled copper is used as winding material
• The winding is star connected, each phase is distributed over several slots to
develop sinusoidal emf.
Rotor
• This is the rotating part of the machine
• salient pole type and the cylindrical rotor type.

KEY POINTS OF TODAY’S LECTURE
 Every motor can use as a generator and vice versa by some modification.
 Input and output of dc machine is DC power but internally it used AC.(Because of commutator)
 Construction and operation wise Induction machine is the simplest machine.
 Three phase IM is self starting but 1 phase motor is not inherently self starting.
 Starting torque of 3 phase IM is poorer so we start at no load or light load.
 Windings of squirrel cage rotor is permanently short circuited by end rings.
 By slip rings we add rotor resistance externally in slip ring IM.
 Induction motor is called asynchronous motor b/c it never rotate at synchronous speed.
 Synchronous machine rotate at speed of rotating magnetic field called synchronous speed (Ns).
 Synchronous generator is also called alternator because it generate alternating supply.
 3- phase Induction motor is self starting but Synchronous motor is inherently not self starting.

  • 3. CONSTRUCTION OF DC MACHINE  A transformer works on alternating current, while a DC machine works on Direct Current. DC MACHNE GENERATOR STATOR ROTOR MOTOR STATOR ROTOR It has two main parts : Stator – It is the stationary part. It does not move or rotate. Rotor – It is the rotating part of the machine.
  • 5. CONSTRUCTION OF DC MACHINE YOKE • It is the outermost part of a DC motor. It is made of cast iron or cast steel. • It provides mechanical protection to the inner parts of the machine. • Provide low reluctance path for the magnetic flux. Pole core • These are made of cast steel laminations. • The main purpose is to hold the field windings . • The end portion of the pole is called pole shoe. FIELD WINDIN G • They are enameled copper wires wound around the poles • When current passes through series connected windings then adjacent poles attain opposite polarity Armature core • This is the rotating part of the machine • It is a cylindrical structure with slots around its outer periphery. • It houses conductors in the slots. • It provides easy path for magnetic flux

CONSTRUCTION OF DC MACHINE Armature winding • This winding is placed in the slots of rotor. • Several turns of copper wire are wound through these slots Commutator • The Commutator converts AC to DC(Generator) and DC to AC (Motor) • The Commutator is attached to the same shaft of the armature • Made by hard drawn copper & have several copper segments insulated by mica. • The armature winding is connected to the commutator segments. Brushes • They carry current to the armature (the rotating part). • DC motor brushes are usually made by high grade carbon. • It connects the rotating armature conductor to static external circuit(Source or load) Shaft • The shaft in a motor is a cylindrical component made by mild steel with maximum breaking strength. • The purpose of the shaft is to transfer mechanical power from or to the machine. • All rotating parts like armature core,commutator,cooling fans etc connected to it.

CONSTRUCTION OF INDUCTION MOTOR INDUCTION MACHNE 3- PHASE INDUCTION MACHINE STATOR ROTOR 1-PHASE INDUCTION MACHINE STATOR ROTOR  Induction motor mainly consists of two parts called as the Stator and the Rotor  The stator is the stationary part of the induction motor, and the rotor is the rotating part.  The construction of the stator is similar to the three-phase synchronous motor.  Three phase induction motor is self start but single phase induction motor is not inherently self start.  In 95% (Approx.) three phase induction motor is used due to rugged construction, inherent self start, low maintenance & reliable operation. Induction machine is called asynchronous machine.

CONSTRUCTION OF INDUCTION MOTOR PARTS OF IM STATOR (STATIONARY) STATOR CORE (ARMATURE) STATOR WINDING (ARMATURE) ROTOR (ROTATING) ROTOR CORE ROTOR WINDING (SHORT CIRCUITED) STATOR CORE & ROTOR CORE  The stator & rotor core are built up of high- grade alloy steel laminations to reduce eddy current losses.  Stator & rotor have laminated type construction. Stator made up of stamping which are 0.3 to 0.5 mm thick.  Its main function is to carry the alternating magnetic field which produces hysteresis and eddy current losses. STATOR WINDING  Three phase & Single phase windings which are usually supplied from a three-phase & Single phase supply system in 3 phase and 1 phase Induction motor. ROTOR ARE TWO TYPES  Squirrel Cage Rotor  Wound Type Rotor or Slip Ring Type Rotor  Parts of Induction Machine

CONSTRUCTION OF SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR SYNCHRONOUS MACHNE SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR STATOR (ARMATURE) ROTOR (FIELD SYSTEM) SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR STATOR (ARMATURE) ROTOR (FIELD SYSTEM)  Construction of a Synchronous Machine, i.e. alternator or motor consists of two main parts, namely the stator and the rotor. STATOR  The stator is the stationary part of the machine. It carries the armature winding in which the voltage is generated or applied as generator or motor. ROTOR  The rotating part of the machine is called Rotor.  There are two types of rotor construction, namely the (a) Salient pole type (b) Cylindrical rotor type.  Synchronous machine is a constant speed machine
  • 13. PARTS OF SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR Frame • It is the outer body of the machine made of cast iron • it protects the inner parts of the machine. STATOR CORE • The stator core is made of silicon steel material & number of insulated stamps stacked to each other. • The main purpose is to hold the windings . Stator Winding • Enameled copper is used as winding material • The winding is star connected, each phase is distributed over several slots to develop sinusoidal emf. Rotor • This is the rotating part of the machine • salient pole type and the cylindrical rotor type.
  • 16. KEY POINTS OF TODAY’S LECTURE  Every motor can use as a generator and vice versa by some modification.  Input and output of dc machine is DC power but internally it used AC.(Because of commutator)  Construction and operation wise Induction machine is the simplest machine.  Three phase IM is self starting but 1 phase motor is not inherently self starting.  Starting torque of 3 phase IM is poorer so we start at no load or light load.  Windings of squirrel cage rotor is permanently short circuited by end rings.  By slip rings we add rotor resistance externally in slip ring IM.  Induction motor is called asynchronous motor b/c it never rotate at synchronous speed.  Synchronous machine rotate at speed of rotating magnetic field called synchronous speed (Ns).  Synchronous generator is also called alternator because it generate alternating supply.  3- phase Induction motor is self starting but Synchronous motor is inherently not self starting.
