2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

4. Mind Map
• Strengths of using this method
– Ideas can be put down fast, this is because you put them down in forms of
arrows and you don’t waste time skimming through, this is because there are
no notes or pages.
– you can remember more because using a mind map to plan stimulates the
brain in a different way to planning on lined notes.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– It takes a lot of time planning a mind map and time is not always on your side.
– It may be difficult for other people to understand all of your ideas once you
have put them down.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I like to use mind mapping because I can put all of my ideas in to one place
and I can brainstorm fast, also it’s a very easy and quick way for me to
plan.
6. Mood Board
• Strengths of using this method
• Mood boards help establish the baseline that will eventually be on your
final product.
• The mood board isn’t your final design so if you want to change anything it
can easily be done.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• You may not of been able to find the exact image that you want your
design to look like.
• You may not be able to find any images at all that could help you with your
design.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I enjoyed using the mood board method because I found the images that
will influence my poster.

to use for your design
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I enjoyed using this method because I was able to
find some really good fonts that I might use in my
poster

• Strengths of using this method
– It’s a great way to plan out what you want your product to look like and it will
remind me what to put in my final poster
• Weaknesses of using this method
• It is very time consuming and I a lot of thought needs to be put in to my
layout
• You may still need to change some of the pictures or text when you come
to do your final product because it may look different to how it does now
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I enjoyed using the layout method because it gave me an idea of how I
want my poster to look
12. Brainstorm
• Strengths of using this method
• You can collaborate different ideas, it’s time effective also its very easy to
understand and produce
• Weaknesses of using this method
• People may disagree with your ideas, some people my prefer a more visual
way of learning
• It may limit your ideas
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I did like this method because it allows people to come together and forward ideas
to each other it can bring people together which I enjoy.
13. Informal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
• You get constructive criticism from your tutor
• You get feedback witch can maybe help you change your idea about your
final design
• Weaknesses of using this method
• Your tutor my be biased and give you feedback you may want to hear
• The information you get from your tutor you may not agree with
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I do like this method because it gives you the chance to get feedback from
an outsiders prospective but I also don’t like it because they may give me
feedback that I might not agree with
14. Initial Reaction
• I have been given the task to produce a game
advertising coca cola, I will use Photo Shop to
produce my game on, also I will use a coca
cola bottle in my game and two people, one
person will have the bottle and the other
person will chase him and when they get it
they’ll be given a number of points
15. Initial Reaction
• Strengths of using this method
• It can help you to plan out your idea of what you want your game to
look like
• Its easy for an outsider to understand what you are producing,
• Weaknesses of using this method
• You may not be able to come up with the ideas you want to put in
to your game

some others

• You can draw they way you want your game and characters to look
• Its an effective and easy way to plan
• Weaknesses of using this method
• You may have difficulty drawing the characters and props you need
for your game
• It could be time consuming if your drawings need a lot of detail
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I didn’t like this method because drawing isn’t my greatest skill, I
would of preferred to do it a different way instead of drawing
18. Formal Proposal
• Strengths of using this method
– You can talk about how your product is going to be laid out and
what your product is about
– It’s easy to understand and not time consuming unless you have
a question that requires a lot of detail
• Weaknesses of using this method
• It can be time consuming if some questions require a lot of
detail
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I liked this method because I could easily answer the
questions that were being asked and the lay out was easy
to understand
