Introduction:
Solid dosage form is most frequently taking drugs. It may
be administered orally as powders, pills, capsules and
tablets. Tablets is most widely use in medicine form.
Tablets are-
 Solid dosage form
 Administered orally
 Contain unit dosage form
 Prepared by molding or compression
Properties of Tablet
 Elegant product identity with no defects
 Sufficient strength to withstand mechanical shock
 Should have chemical & mechanical Stable
 Release active ingredients in predicted ways
 Should have elegance to customer
Advantages of tablets:
 Ease of accurate dosing.
 Good physical & chemical stability.
 Lighter & compact.
 Lower cost.
 Provides greatest dose precision.
 Highly convenient
Disadvantage
 Difficult to swallow
 Difficult to formulate a drug with poor wettability & slow dissolution into a tablet .
 Slow onset of action .
 2. Some drugs resist compression into dense compacts, owing to amorphous nature,
low density character.
 3. Drugs with poor wetting, slow dissolution properties, optimum absorption high
in GIT may be difficult to formulate or manufacture as a tablet that will still
provide adequate or full drug bioavailability.
 4. Bitter testing drugs, drugs with an objectionable odor or drugs that are sensitive
to oxygen may require encapsulation or coating. In such cases, capsule may offer
the best and lowest cost.
Formulation of tablets
1. Active ingredients.
2. Excipients.
- Diluent: Mannitol, Glucose
- Binder:Gelatin, Cellulose
- Disintegrants: cellulose
- Glidant: Silica , Talc
- Lubricant: PEG , Mangnesium stearate
- Anti adherent: Starch
- Sorbent: Microcrystalline cellulose

What is packing
Packing is a process by which wrappe the finished product.
It stands to get following feature:-
 Prevent drug degradation
 Prevent environmental changes
 unit-dose form
 Proper labeling
 barcode labeling
 prevention of microbial contamination
 Proper marketing
Packing Equipment

Small scale production
Small scale manufacturing refers to the production of a commodity with a
small plant size firm. The investment in machinery is lower when compared to
large scale units.
Small scale appropriate if :-
 The business produces non-standardized
 The market size is limited
 Products have to be customized
Pilot plants
Pilot plants are small-scale production systems used to
 practically test and validate a production technology
before commercialization.
 Generally, the primary motivation behind building and
operating pilot plants is to understand and explore a
new technology.
 Lessons learned can help establish valuable
experience and data that results in a safer, more
efficient and commercially viable larger or full-scale
production facility.
Large Scale Manufacturing
The term “Large scale manufacturing” refers to the production of a
commodity on a large scale with a large sized firm. It requires huge
investments in plant and machinery.
Large scale firms characterized by
 Large scale production
 Market size is large
 Mechanization
 High labor
 Products in good quality.
Motive of large scale production
 Desire for increase sales
 Desire for large customer base
 Desire for economy
 Desire for global company
 Desire to overcome competition
 Desire to achieve monopoly status
 Desire to long term profitability
 Desire to increase demand
Problem associate in large scale production
 Less supervision
 Individual tastes ignored
 Absence of personal element
 Possibility of depression
 Dependence of foreign markets
 Cut-throat competition
 International complications
 Less adaptability
Problems can be avoided by small scale manufacturing
 Close supervision
 Economical management
 Personal attention
 Personal touch with employees
 Grater adaptability
 Independence
 Nature of demand
 Nature of industry
