The Manchurian Candidate by Johnathan Demme Essay
The Manchurian Candidate, Johnathan Demme directed the remake. Both films portray paranoia,
mind control, and conspiracy. Frankenheimer utilizes satire, humor, and symbolism to convey the
themes, whereas, Demme uses modern fears, camera angles and focus, and mental illness to
achieve similar results. Many of the elements of the 2004 remake have been modernized. While
the original movie placed the soldiers in Korea, the remake placed them in Kuwait. Demme did
changed the location of the war, in order to appeal to current fears and suspicions. In 1962, the
threat of communism was at the forefront of everyone s thoughts. However, during 2004, only
three years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, citizens were no longer concerned about... Show more

The film switches between perspectives of the ladies garden party and the communist officials
to stress the comic surrealism of the situation. The calm and genteel ladies garden party is a
stark contrast to the evil plotting of the communists. Image overlay as well as soft lighting are
also used to convey the surrealism and dreamlike quality. The absurd way that Eleanor s husband,
Senator Iselin, presents the supposed number (which he is constantly changing) of communists in
the state department, satirizes the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Many of the accused
communists during the red scare were merely from wild speculation caused by irrational fear and
political movements to get rid of the opposition. It was also ironic that Eleanor, who had her
husband present the fake number of communists, was actually the communist herself. The role of
a mother is also satirized in the film. The 1950 s portrayed mothers as pure and wholesome,
however Eleanor is portrayed as the evil and conniving perpetrator of peril. The remake focused on
keeping the audience and Major Marco in a constant state of paranoia and uncertainty. In the
original movie, the audience is shown, as well as told by the narrator, that the platoon was captured
and brainwashed by communists. Whereas, in the remake, Major Marco and the

Uses of Voice Over Internet Protocol
VOIP: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) can be defined as a series of technologies and technique
that is used for release of voice communications and multimedia through Internet Protocol networks.
In some cases, this technique is referred to as a means of converting analog audio signals into
digital data that can be delivered through an InternetProtocol. The use of the technique is
attributed to its ability to transform standard Internet connection into a platform for free phone
calls. In the past few years, Voice over Internet Protocol has emerged as an innovative technology
with the capability of completely transforming phone systems across the globe. As a result, VoIP
providers have not only existed for a considerable period of time but are also growing steadily.
However, the use of VoIP to rework modern phone systems is characterized by several advantages
and disadvantages.
Use of VoIP: The use of Voice over Internet Protocol is primarily an intelligent re invention of the
wheel in the world s phone systems. Generally, this technique involves transmitting voice
information in digital format in distinct packets instead of using the conventional circuit committed
protocols of the public switched telephone network ( VoIP (voice over IP) , n.d.). This technique was
developed following initiatives by major equipment providers to enhance the use of standard
measures for transmitting voice and video using Internet Protocol within an intranet and across the

High School Vs. College Student
High school Student vs. College Student School plays an important role in our life. Many of us
will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to
work in a specific field. Of course, those years are broken down into several levels, some of them
being more liked than others. Two important steps that we go through are high schooland college.
Even though some people would think they are almost similar, yet there are significant differences
between them. The cost of high school educationis not the same as the cost of college education.
Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment
also differs from high school to college, a fact that can be related to the question of freedom
versus responsibility. It is true to say that college is more expensive than high school. Of course,
it provides a higher level of education, but by having such high fees it does not give a chance to
them; coming from a family with a low income. Also, at college you have to buy your own
books whereas in high school you borrow them from the school for a year. As they do for high
schools, the government should pay for the books and then borrow them to students, as they do in
high schools. Paying for the education you get is expensive, but many people have to pay even
more. Many cities do not have colleges, so students who want to get a higher

Reasons For The Nullification Crisis
The Nullification crisis was a very dangerous point in time in America. Anytime in history when
there was a revolt caused chaos throughout the nation. In 1832, the many tariffs hurt the state of
South Carolina. Because of the disruption throughout the state, a convention was called to solve
the problem. It took three major steps: It declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null and void
within South Carolina. They also warned that they may succeed from the union because of the
unfair tariffs. At this point, a way to prevent war was necessary and at the top of everyone s list.
Tension was building when finally, Senator Clay of Kentucky came up with a compromise to
appease everyone. The government would gradually reduce the impact of the Tariff.

Social Forces in to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Everyone in the world has their own identity; have you ever thought about what your identity is?
Identity plays a big role in the world especially in America where not all identities are good.
People might identify a wealthy person as snotty rich or a poor person as defective or maybe
someone calls a man a woman when they re really a man. Or maybe you call someone a terrorist
just because they are middle eastern. The list goes on and on and thats why social forces influence
identities and can become dangerous. Gender, race, and social classare all forms of social forces.
Race is everywhere in the world. But people need to understand that race isn t color. Anyone can
have color; people can be a Hispanic and have very dark skin and still be referred to as a black
person. Race is culture and culture is everywhere. It disgusting how we can t get along with
each other and we re in the 21st century. In the race forum at John Hersey High school (Janu,
Bruce) it was said that there s still a lot of racism going on in the world to this date. He gave the
example of many lynchings in Texas. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Scouts dad is called a
nigger lover (Lee Chapter 9) and the only reason he is called a nigger lover is because he is a
lawyer and he helps anyone out when they are in trouble. Another example in the To Any Would Be
Terrorists (Nye n.p) article says that when the word terrorist is said, people automatically think its

In the United States the Krispy Kreme doughnut is fluctuating between the growth and maturity
stages within different markets. The franchise will also be entering a prime, new market of
customers who have a demand for their product. The typical Scandinavian diet is usually high in
fat and salt and the Swedes are known for their butter cookies. The average family in Sweden, 2
adults and 2 children consumes about 2.7 pounds of sweets weekly. Krispy Kreme doughnuts will
fit in perfectly with their sweets routines.
Costs
Currently there are no major issues, politically, legally, economically or culturally, that send up
red flags. The Swedish government is a constitutional monarchy with and elected Prime Minister
and they are ranked high for lack of corruption. The country s next elections will be September
2014 and there are no notes for cause of alarm due to political unrest. The legal system is
impartial and has safeguards in place for property rights. There is an intricate process for non EU
investors to import goods that might add up to time and money. Culturally, the people of Sweden
are factor endowments that considered for this venture. They are a demographic that enjoys high
fat foods. They are descendants of Vikings and still enjoy their whale steaks and desserts.
Economically their system is sound and fairly healthy. Sweden has a population of 9.517 million.

Mental Health Care In Prison
The number of aging people in the prison system has and will continue to have a major impact
on health care. Not only while they are in jail but once they are released the cost of health care
for these individuals is still a burden. While incarcerated many illnesses go untreated. Usually
there are a couple different factors in this situation, one is mental health and the other is unmet
psychosocial needs. Many people that are employed by the prison system don t have the proper
training to know how to test for the vast mental illnesses that need to be tested for. Then on the
other hand if they have the training they are understaffed and don t have time to get to everyone
that needs the help. While there has been many studies on how to improve health care while in
prison, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done to get a better handle on the financial
aspect.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Criminal Justice Health Care, older prisoners is at the root of a healthcare crisis. ( I just used the
title and the sentence that is marked 1). While many of the older inmates are putting a major
stress on the criminal health care system, it is not only effecting them but the public health care as
well. It is hard for those who are released back into the public to get on the insurance that they
require. A parolee can wait months to get some kind of insurance, in the months that are spent
waiting they often go to the emergency room. They often cannot pay the fees that come along with
going to the emergency room, because it is harder for them to get employment. They are not as
likely to be employed based on their age and prison

introduced aiming at researching more human genes in order to understand, read genes and find

challenges and problems. The primary objective of the project isn t wrong or questionable but
some believe its implications are. Genes are made of a molecule called DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid)

Carlos Cruchaga and his team searched for dementia related genetic variations in some of these
families and Their results were published in 2014 in the journals Nature and Nature Medicine.
The team identified variations in genes called phospholipase D3 (PLD3) and UNC5C that appear
to promote the risk of late onset Alzheimer s disease. The results of what they found inspired
them to keep looking for more. Dr. Cruchaga received his Association grant in 2011 for a study
entitled Exome Sequencing of Late Onset Alzheimer s Disease Families. Dr. Cruchaga selected 14
families to observe who have inherited Late Onset Alzheimer. His team and him later analyzed the
exomes from certain members of these families, searching for gene variations linked to Alzheimer s.
This process initially identified a variation in PLD3 that was shown to double the risk of
Alzheimer s disease in some cases. Previous research has found that people with Alzheimer s tend
to have lower than normal levels of the PLD3 protein in their brains. This finding indicates that
PLD3 may protect the brain against Alzheimer s like changes.
In 2005 there were various report on gene therapy trials delayed disease progression. It wasn t a
successful cure, but the results were promising enough which triggered further research in that area.
Scientists took skin cells from patients and modified them to secrete the protein nerve growth factor

portion of the novel. As N describes the Darkwoods Estate, her perception of situation is

Egyptain Foreign Policy In Regards To Israel The United...
The History of the conflict in the Middle East is long and well documented. To both, and to many
biased observers the history of the Egyptian/Israeli conflict is very one sided, with one government,
or one people causing the continued wars between the two neighboring states. But, as any social
scientist of any reputation will state, all international conflicts have more than one side, and usually
are the result of events surrounding, and extending over the parties involved. Thus, using this
theory as a basis, we must assume that the conflict between Israeland Egyptis more complicated
than a partial observer would see it. For the purpose of this paper, we are going to examine the
basic factors of Egypt s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned, the Egyptians saw the formation of Israel as an Imperialist state, and they were
defending the land for the Palestinians, and more importantly for the newly developing arab unity.
While the United States was not actively involved in the war, either by providing arms or providing
much assistance, their actions did create an interesting and volatile atmosphere. As soon as the state
of Israel was created, the United State quickly recognized the state and started diplomatic relations
with the newly formed government. At the same time, the USSR recognized Israel, not wishing the
US to be seen as the champion for the newly found state. Although there is no definitive proof, one
can assume that Egypt, and the rest of the Arab nations felt the need to quickly react to the
situation, in almost a type of fear that powers outside their Arab influence, such as the United
States were quickly impeding on their territory, by using Israel as a means of their peaceful
aggression.
Still, Egypt was clearly the main aggressor in this instance, and was not defending their own
territory, but instead attempting to obtain territory, which they did succeed in acquiring, through
the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian actions quickly set the tone of conflict in the Middle East, giving the
Israelis no option but the take an initial purely military response in defense of their newly formed
state. In the minds of the Israeli leaders, Egypt

The History Of The World Wide Web
The history of the World Wide Web was created on August 6th, 1991 by Tim Berners Lee.
(Bryant, 2012). Due to the creation of the World Wide Web, many things have changed. Websites
have made everything either easier or more complicated. But, we will talk about the easier this
world has gotten. Some websites that have made life easier are Facebook, Strayer University,
Amazon, EBay, Google, Gmail, Yahoo, PayPal, Walmart, Schwan s, Myspace
, Pogo, Trip Advisor,
and Home Chef. These are just to name a few of the websites that have made our lives easier.
I could not agree more, that technology is like the Devil to many households making parents
divorce due to lack of person to person communication, and it makes partners want to have
infidelities in their relationships. But, nonetheless, websites like the ones I listed above are to make
our lives easier.
We will start with Social Networking sites. Social Networking sites, like Facebook, and
Myspace, are to bring people closer to each other from distances away. I have known of many
relatives finding each other after many years of not knowing each other, due to adoption and
other circumstances. They always help connect business to the users. You will always see ads
on the sides of Facebook while playing a game, if it is not full screen, of business that you might
like. Social Networking can be the cause of distraction with family as well. There was a report of a
lady playing Farmville, a very popular game on Facebook and it used to

Theme Of Hunger For Power In King Lear
The hunger for power is the root of the tragic outcome in King Lear. There are 3 characters that
embodied this theme exactly. King Lear with his loss of power made him lash out. The way
Edmund was treated made him want the power he could never have and deceive anyone to get it.
Goneril s hunger for power made her go against those she supposedly loved. These three characters
aren t only to blame for their own tragedies but the tragedies of every character.
At the beginning of the play King Lear has more power than anyone else, the feeling of power
made him think it was okay to ask his three daughters who loved him the most. When his
youngest and favourite daughter Cordelia did not give him the answer he wanted by saying,
Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My heart into my mouth/ I love your majesty / According to
my bond, no more nor less (King Lear 1.1.91 93). he started lashing out. Lear clearly values
Goneril and Regan fawning over him over Cordelia s sincere honesty. Out of pride and anger,
Lear banishes Cordelia, as well as Kent for defending her. Lear splits the kingdom in half to
Goneril and Regan which leads to the deaths of many people in the play. Throughout the play he
becomes increasingly shocked when people do not obey him the way they did before and the
lack of respect he receives. With his loss of power Lear often responds to these problems with
anger saying things like My curses on her! (2.4.138). about his own daughter. By the end of the
play he recognizes that he takes responsibility for both his own problems and for those of others.
King Lear s actions were the first step to the plays tragic outcome.
Unlike King Lear, Edmund has no power at the beginning of the play. Being Gloucester s youngest
and illegitimate son he is not accepted by society or his father. Gloucester says in front of Edgar,
His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge / I have so often blushed to acknowledge him that now I
am brazed to it (1.1.8 9). Edgar, Edmund s older brother will inherit their father s wealth, land, and
title. Knowing this Edmund s hunger for power has probably grown through the years, giving him
the motivation to act the way he did. In 1.2 Edmund tells the audience that he s going to con

Themes In Clybourne Park And Water By The Spoonful
Themes are one of the most vital and critical elements of a play s overall significance and
meaning. Without identifying what tools a playwright uses to construct his/her play through a
close reading, such as language, character, or setting, the audience would lack a clear vision of
the particular play s meaning. In the case of Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris, and Water by the
Spoonful, by Quiara Alegria Hudes, race can be identified as a theme in both, through the use of
literary devices, however it is explored much more subtly in Water by the Spoonful. Race is the
major underlying theme in Clybourne Park, while the themes of community and addiction are dealt
with in Water by the Spoonful. Nevertheless, each play is complete with examples... Show more

Karl s language in this quote, as in the previous, shows his character believes the black race should
be separate from the white community, as he feels they are not equal. He reiterates this when he
ignorantly says, ... fitting into a community is really what it all comes down to (64). Karl s
character evidently proves the theme of race. Here the audience receives a reference to the theme
of community. With the racism of the 1950 s comes the clear divide between the white and black
community, however, the sense that there is still a divide remains in 2009, in the second act.
The racism continues with another white male character, Jim, who pressures black housekeeper,
Francine into admitting that her family and herself would not fit in or feel comfortable living in a
white community. Jim asks, Would this be the sort of neighborhood you d find an attractive place
in which to live? (70). Francine avoids confrontation and simply states, It s a very nice
neighborhood (70). Her use of language is polite, as she does not want to start an argument. Instead
of admitting they would not fit into such a community, as Jim was probing her to admit, she
remains calm. Francine even agrees that there are differences between the two races, and that they
live differently, saying in reply to Jim, I agree with that (73). Rather, Francine may just be giving
Jim the answer he wants. She knows that if she opposes his opinion, she will gain nothing.

Critical Analysis Of Self Leadership And Positive Psychology
Introduction
Utilising a combined self leadership and positive psychology perspective, I will self analyse my
strengths and weaknesses through the use of questionnaires completed throughout the semester to
gain a deeper understanding of my personality traits in my chosen career. The career path I have
chosen is Human Resources (HR) and everything analysed will be in respect of that path.
A definition of self leadership is the process of influencing oneself to establish the self direction
and self motivation needed to perform (Manz, 1995). Positive Psychology is the study of the
conditions and processes that contribute to the flourishing or optimal functioning of people, groups,
and institutions (Gable Haidt, 2005; Sheldon King, 2001).
Critical analysis of Self leadership and Positive Psychology
Self leadership is very important for a number of reasons, including:
1.To enhance job effectiveness and develop personally and professionally.
2.To achieve career potential and growth such as promotions, salary increases, job satisfaction and
job choice.
3.To enhance individual and group well being such as health and happiness.
4.Becoming an emotionally intelligent professional capable of leading effectively.
By gaining a clearer understanding of self leadership the elements of positive psychology can be
incorporated. Positive psychology looks at the circumstances and processes that enable individuals,
teams and organisations to grow and develop at a high level.

Haitian Culture Research Paper
I am so excited about taking this course not just because I want to enhance my writing skills but
also because I want to know about the Haitian literature in general. This includes, cultural and
historical events, writing masters and everything else that takes part of the Haitian literature that
complement the essence of Haitians culture. I would like to learn all these relevant aspects about
Haiti since I do not know that much of this country. I just know that Haiti is a very poor country
where people are very in need and the government does intervene to improve the quality of lives of
its residents, and that Haitians native languages are creole and French.I would like to know why the

Jane Eyre Influence
During the Victorian era, many literary pieces of work were based around the topics of struggle
and societal problems. These topics are introduced in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte as well as
many other literary pieces during the time. In Jane Eyre, the main character is Jane Eyre, a girl
who struggles with family and her social status. She was raised by Mrs. Reed, whom she
eventually left, and encountered many paternal figures in her life. The way she consistently
encounters different paternal figures influences her own views on affection. Jane s consistent
finding of a paternal figure, shows how consciously or subconsciously she is finding someone to

The motif of her constantly finding a parental figure to give her affection and for her to give
affection doesn t only affect Jane in the present, it also affects her in her future. She had learned
the ways of giving, receiving, and the lack of affection in every paternal figure she had
encountered. She learned and evolved every time she had met someone, and used the knowledge of
the past paternal figure to fully develop into the Jane readers know nearing the end of the story.
Therefore, the motif of Jane consistently finding that paternal figure is one of the most important,
as it not only affects her in the present (Jane talks in the past as it s a reflection), but it also affects
her future on how Jane chooses to give, receive, and react to affection being

China and Intellectual Property Rights
China and intellectual property rights In the global business arena the concept of intellectual
property has drawn much more attention now than there before, globally the protection of
intellectual property is at a dynamic stage, the international cooperation on science and technology
and the development of economy and trade, the legal protection of intellectual property is playing a
significant role in society. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
intellectual property refers to the creations of human minds which include among others,
inventions, literal and other artistic works, symbols and names and designs used in commerce
(WIPO, 2002). Intellectual, unlike other assets is intangible and owned by the creators, legally it
becomes an asset in the sense that it can be owned and dealt with. Copyrights, patents, trade marks
are other terms used to describe intellectual property. This can be categorized into two major areas
namely industrial property which includes inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs and
geographical indications. Copyright is another category which comprises literary, artistic works and
musical works. The rights related to this category including those of artists in their performances,
producers of phonograms in their recordings, radio and television broadcasters in their programs

The Morality Of Birth Control By Margaret Sanger
The Morality of Birth Control In my quest to find a speech that was both written by a woman and
made an impact towards the minorities of our country, I stumbled across the gem known as The
Morality of Birth Control, given by Margaret Sanger in 1918. The main points of the speech are
about the menace of overpopulation to the world, the spreading of knowledge about legalized birth
controlmethods, and how limiting the population in a controlled way could make for a raised
standard of our population. Margaret Sangerwas born as one of eleven kids in 1879 in New York.
She lived in Corning, New York until 1910 where she moved and started a publication on a
woman s right to birth control. In 1912, she started to write a column in a local newspaper called
What Every Girl Should Know. She was also a nurse she helped many women who had tried to go

people people that Sanger considered not of sound health, idiots, feeble minded, and morons. The
Morality of Birth Control goes hand in hand with both the pioneer and the crazy side of Margaret
Sanger. Sanger gave the speech to stress the topic that without proper birth control, the morals of
our offspring would be lowered, and therefore essentially lowering the standards of our human race
in general. In her speech, Sanger divided humans into three groups. The ones who knew about birth
control and had the means to access it, the ones who knew about it and did not have access, and the
ones who had neither. From my interpretation of the speech, she is degrading the latter in a way,
moreso because in her mind, everyone must use birth control throughout the whole thing she
constantly disses the people who cannot exercise control over their

Chronic Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It is thought that nearly 85% of
adults have some stage of periodontal disease. With that being said it means periodontal disease
is more common than heart disease and cancer. The good thing about this disease is that if it is
caught in an early stage it can be reversible, but if it is left untreated it can become very dangerous
leading to tooth loss and possibly surgery.
Periodontal disease refers to a group of problems that arise in the crevice between the gum and the
tooth or the gum sulcus. The disease is normally categorized into two groups, it has several
different phases and progresses. The first group is called gingivitis which is an inflammation of the

you have gingivitis does not mean you will get periodontitis, in fact some experts believe that they
are two very different diseases. Chronic periodontitis is basically the same thing as gingivitis but it
has a few more symptoms including; halitosis, a persistent metallic taste in the mouth, and gingival
recession. Most patients who have this will not even worry or they might not even know. Most of
the time inflammation and bone destruction is painless, patients just assume that they just need to
floss more or brush more often. This can often be solved by better oral care. Patients who suffer
from aggressive periodontitis are normally younger than patients who have the chronic form. People
who have this are generally healthy other than the presence of periodontal disease. These people
will experience rapid loss of periodontal attachment fibers and bone destruction. They also will have
a depressed neutrophil function, the neutrophils can also be defective, resulting in depressed
chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Patients with this

Louisiana Purchase Influence
What makes the Louisiana Purchase such a defining moment in American history is the very fact
that many of us couldn t imagine our nation without it. Just think about it for a second: How
different would the history of the United States be if the nation s western boundary stopped at the
Mississippi River? It would change the very fabric of how Americans imagine themselves, how the
economy of the country works, and how the nation was shaped. Indeed, many of you reading this
right now might not have even been Americans if not for the Louisiana Purchase.
One of the most central events that influenced the Louisiana Purchase was the Haitian Revolution.
The revolution had started in 1791, when the slaves who had provided the labor on sugar
plantations on the French colony of Saint Domingue (as Haiti was called) revolted against slavery.

Soon, the French realized that they might lose Saint Domingue as a colony altogether, something

island had filled the French treasury for years. The French were right to fear this. As the rebellion
escalated, the Spanish and English had begun sending troops to Saint Domingue, hoping to claim
some of it for themselves. So, in 1794, in an effort to keep Saint Domingue, the French decided
they would abolish slavery in all of their colonies. Soon after, Toussaint agreed to keep his
supporters loyal to the French. Fighting still continued on the island between various warring
factions, but Toussaint s forces largely maintained

Rhetorical Analysis Of Frederick Douglass Speech
Frederick Douglass was a freed slave in the 1800 s who was famous for his ability to read and

United States. In this speech, he called out the hypocrisy of the nation (Douglass), questioning the
nation s treatment of slaves on a supposed day of independence. Frederick Douglass effectively uses
rhetorical strategies to construct his argument and expose the hypocrisy of the nation. One of the
rhetorical strategies that Douglass uses extremely effectively is the use of rhetorical questions. He
has many of them scattered throughout the speech and they re meant to make the audience

This is hypocritical in that the white men make these values and traditions a staple of their lives,
yet when it comes to slaves, they seem to go away. He also believes that, though he will use the
severest language (Douglass) he can, he firmly believes that not one word shall escape me that
any man whose... not blinded by prejudice, or... a slave holder, shall not confess to be right and
just (Douglass). So he sincerely believes that the average human being also knows that the
treatment of slaves is unjust and unethical, but they choose not to act on these thoughts. His view,
coming from the eyes and thoughts of slaves across America, show how hypocritical the nation
actually is in both one sided values and not acting upon their knowledge that what is going on is
wrong. Frederick Douglass also uses the point that slaves are human, and are treated as such except
in the ways of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He knows that nobody doubts it. The
slaveholders themselves acknowledge it in the enactment of laws for their government (Douglass).
He says that there are laws forbidding things such as reading and writing to slaves, yet there is
nothing of the sort that in reference to animals or other things one can one. In fact, the slaves are
proven human just because nature itself treats them as such. Douglass states, When the

Why Leslie Van Houten deserves to walk free.
Picture this...You re nineteen years old with nowhere to call home, your mothers left you
traumatised and permanently scarred. You re alone in the big bad world. Fragile, vulnerable and
powerless. Does any teenager really have life s answers? Or are they aimlessly searching for them
from somewhere or someone else? Cast yourself back to when you were nineteen, if someone had
entered your life offering all the answers, don t tell me you would ve turned them away. Leslie Van
Houten was just nineteen years old when she fell under infamous cult leader Charles Manson s spell.
She thought he could give her the answers everyone so desperately seeks at that tender age. A year
after joining the Manson Family Van Houten was involved in the 1969 murders of Leno and
Rosemary LaBianca. Under Manson s orders Van Houten stabbed Rosemary approximately 16
times. She was found guilty of murder and is now serving life in prison. In September 2017 Van
Houten was granted parole. She now faces a one hundred and twenty day review period. At the end,
it will be decided whether or not she is fit for release. I believe that Leslie should walk free and be
allowed a second chance at life.

Clayton County Population Health Case Study
Among all the factors that are attributed to population health, the environment is perhaps the
greatest. It is common knowledge in public health that if the physical environment is unhealthy, so
is the population that live there. Even though the many of the environmental issues are being
addressed by the State and County authorities, Clayton County is experiencing a slow rate of
change. While the air pollutionparticulate matter is declining, it is currently at 13.2, which is higher
than the national average of 9.5, and the 12.8 for the state s average.2 In addition, this county has
drinking water violations and severe housing problems. As a result of these and other environmental

As with the environment, this health factor is also a great indicator of the health status of a
population, because if babies are not being born or are dying prematurely, this can have long term
economic consequences and population decline. Therefore, it is paramount that much efforts are
put into lowering infant mortality rates According to State of Health Report, Clayton County
ranked high in infant mortality in the State of Georgia. In addition, it ranked highly in premature
births and low birth weight. The most current data show the infant mortality rate to be 9.2,
premature birth at 11.0 percent, and low birth weight at 10.4 percent among all ages and races.6
These disparities are much greater among the various age group and race. Because the issue of
maternal and child health is such a major factor in the overall health of the population of Clayton
County, the focus will be centered on the issues of infant mortality and the magnitude of the
problem confronting the population of this

Ruby Payne s Model Of Poverty, Middle Class
SES is a dramatic way that approaches a person s labeled level of culture in society. This is
categorized further by Ruby Payne s model of the three classes poverty, middle class, and wealthy.
The Socioeconomic Status (SES) in Education
Often times a teacher will have a mixture of students from different backgrounds. SES deals with
the education, income, and occupation of the family members, while also corresponding to
privilege, power, and control standings in society (American Psychological Association, n.d.).
Sometimes, but not always knowledge of these things by teachers helps them to understand why a
student lacks the necessary learning skills in order to succeed.
High level of education is not always stressed in certain parts of society. ... Show more content on

If a teacher believes this idea, then when the student fails, the teacher will feel he or she has no
reason to fear repercussions by a parent or staff member. But, the critical idea is that not all children
in this SES poverty category have the same attributes. Payne s writing does give more information
to teachers about students, but it stereotypes them as a group rather than an individual.
Another criticism is that children in poverty lack skills and experiences of the other two SES
classes. In a way this is true because people of these two other SES classes get more toys, travel
more, see more movies, and many other forms of entertainment. But, what is not stressed is
children in poverty often appreciate more what they possess then the other two classes. That is
because they are not afforded the opportunities to always get what they want. For example, one
might take better care of their one pair of shoes if that is all they

The Correlation Between Self Efficacy And Specific Aspects...
The survey results would be analyzed to discover any correlations between the three sections. I
would correlate each of the demographic factors to the self efficacy score to determine if any

abuse, or conversely, whether lifestyle has an impact on self efficacy. This survey would be too
limited to distinguish which is driving the other, except to say that a relationship of some kind

I would also correlate each participant s self efficacy score to the scores from the biographical area
as subdivided into these categories: total number of incidents, past offender against ... Show more

To understand the variation in responses, I would identify the measures of dispersion for self
efficacy scores and each of the maltreatment subcategories (past and present, victim, and offender
against minor and against partner incidents). Discussion
Needless to say, this survey would in no way provide conclusive information regarding how to
break the cycle of violence. It would, however, provide insight into the connection that may exist
between a person s level of self efficacy and their experience of abuse, both as victim and
perpetrator. This would be extremely beneficial to anyone involved in assisting abuse victims
because it would provide the knowledge and motivation to help clients develop self efficacy,
thereby arming them with at least one of the requisite tools to safeguard them against becoming a
victim or offender. My hope is that by enhancing victims self efficacy, future generations can be
spared because victims will go forward making healthier choices than did their predecessors. That
is assuming, of course, that my hypothesis is correct, and a high level of self efficacy is correlated
to low involvement in the cycle of violence.

Difference Between Vocabulary And Reading Comprehension
When students or many people want to try to talk, write a sentence, or read some book they will

vocabulary also the important component that usually uses in reading instruction beside the text

The Destiny Of The Republic By Candice Millard
President James Garfield s tragic death is brought to new life in the book The Destiny of the
Republic. Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation
together. This being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had
everything under its belt but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time.
Through poverty, war, a surprising turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President
Garfield s life was a downward spiral and he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was
unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware that they were slowly beginning to unite
over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau. Millard didn t just write a book of
a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly of the personal yet
challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story. The author
really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy
because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father,
worked endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going
onto congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount
of time. These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and
hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make

selling helps to reduce packaging costs. They also have their own bakery which means they do
not depend on delivery from suppliers or ordering from other suppliers. This is a good thing in
that they only bake according to demand at that period, hence it reduces wastage. This reduces
wastage of resources because resources are being fully utilised. The use of cameras as their
security system is a good thing because it reduces the number of workers to be recruited as
security hence saving cost. Tesco is using energy efficient bulbs to achieve low operating costs,
incorporating energy efficient lighting and cleaner ways to operate into the business and it has no
empty refrigerators, this is to reduces space and the electricity costs. Tesco will probably see a
reduction in total energy consumption and be supporting a greener planet.
Tesco maintains proper stocking levels of the items that they actually sell, this way they can reduce
overhead in the form of excess inventory,

Mechanical Properties And Thermal Analysis
Composite structure is a combination of two or more different items that may be distinguished
physically, resulting in a final product that has a better performance from each component
individually done. It consists of matrix composite materials (polymer, metal or ceramic) and one or
more stages of reinforcement (fibers, particles, flakes, or fillers). The combination of the different
elements appropriately to achieve a system with structural or functional characteristics of the best
that can be achieved through one of the components alone. The vehicle has become an essential part
of the day because of the material advantages such as low weight, high corrosion resistance, high
strength and fatigue, and faster assembly. Used widely as raw materials in the airframe industry,
packaging, electronics, medical equipment and spacecraft building materials home [1].
The increased use of composite materials for various applications underlines its importance
/ significance in mechanical properties and thermal analysis of an engineering system. The thermal
conductivity of a composite material (combination of two or more components) can be measured by
experimental methods. Analytical equations are essential to predict the thermal conductivity of a
composite material. The main advantage of using filler material in composites is to reduce the
overall cost of the composite. Besides reducing costs, filling materials are also used as a main
ingredient, which improves the performance of the

Database Memorandum
I wanted to review the database tools we have at our disposal and explain what each is used for,
when each is appropriate, and some improvements that we are pursuing to makes these tools easier
to use and more powerful. For the sales organization there are three database options available to
us; HyperionВ®, AccessВ®, and our most widely used tool, BusinessObjects by SAP.
Hyperion:
This database is least understood by the sales team because HyperionВ® is only used to gather
financial data (Pinnacle Titan Technology Partners [Titan], n.d., p. 1). As a sales team we only use
it once a year for creating our annual sales and operating budgets. The system is not easy for us to

Future sales initiatives and identification of nationwide hospital trends can provide tremendous
industry intelligence that the company can support with new distribution and consulting service
offerings.
SAP BusinessObjects:
BusinessObjects is the most widely used and powerful tool the sales team has at its disposable.
This data warehouse provides us with significant volumes of information that can be used to
support business decisions both internally and externally. We can answer customer questions in a
short time span and document our service to them over the last five years. The service and pricing
data is most widely called for and every representative has used their own queries to answer these
questions. While the individual initiative to respond to these inquiries is positive, they are
inconsistent because of the use of custom queries.
We want to ensure that our data is reliable and accurate, so we are going to develop a group of
standard queries for internal use by the sales team. Some report will be internally focused and
include gross sales and margin data. Others will be externally focused and include customer
specific data. Vendor sales volume, fill rates, and pricing credits are all contractual obligations we
have to fulfill. With each person running their own reports there are inconsistencies that are being
used against us as contract renewals are initiated. Monetary penalties can be invoked and damage to

These Swell Adjectives Research Paper
What do all these swell adjectives have in common? Well, they all describe the fantastic low
brow literature aptly titled PULP FICTION. The pulps, be it magazines or novels, was North
America s favorite form of escape for nearly sixty years. Pulp fiction delivered lavish cover art,
fantastic illustrations and action packed stories for the American, Canadian and British public.
Nothing, it seems, could stop these publications, they survived wars and depressions without any
signs of slowing down. In fact, it was only in the 1950s when tv became popular that these mass
produced masterpieces began to show hints of death. However, like the common cockroach this
25cent throw away literature would never really go away, only push up in price.

Effects Of Racial Injustice
The Injustice of Racial Prejudice
Is there racial discrimination in the United States criminal justice system? If so, how can we change
this? Police brutality against minorities has specifically brought attention to this subject.
Researchers have been studying racial prejudice in everyday life, police interactions with civilians,
and in the courtroom.
Researchers studied racial prejudice in everyday interactions. These simple interactions can help us
understand how to improve the criminal justice system even before jurors step into the courtroom.
Lowery, Hardin, and Sinclair (2001) wanted to know if the race of the experimenter would elicit
automatic racial prejudice from participants. The results showed that when the experimenter was
Black and the participants were White, there were fewer anti Black answers, meaning that there
were less negative association with Black names or faces on the test they completed . Asians, on the
other hand, did not hide their biases. When the anti bias instructions were received, Whites and
Asians had similar results. These results show that framing jury instructions and having Black
people present in a White setting can help decrease bias in courts.
Researchers also studied racial prejudice directly in the criminal justice system. Eberhardt, Goff,
Purdie, and Davies (2004) wanted to know the extent Blacks are associated with criminality.
Participants looked at White and Black faces, were primed with either random letters, crime related

Letter of Appeal Essay
I am studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. I am writing to appeal for my financial aid. I
feel a letter was proper because of certain circumstances that occurred during my life that
contributed to me withdrawing from Psychology, College prep writing, college prep arithmetic and
failing PRN 0374. I began attending MiamiDade College in the fall of August 2006 right after I
graduated from high school. I enrolled in several courses which were Psychology, College prep
writing and College prep arithmetic. In October 2006 I found out I was pregnant with my daughter

Throughout the course of the LPN I ve came across several trial and tribulations where there
were several occasions I had to come to class with my daughter because I could not find someone
to watch my daughter, which was the reason why I failed the PRN0374 course. There were days
that I had to miss class because I could not find a babysitter and there were times where my
babysitter would cancel on me last minute. Many of the times I took chances bringing my daughter
to school with me and having to hide her in the back of the classroom just so the professor wouldn
t send me home because she was with me.
Now that I ve found a reliable sitter for my daughter I am doing a lot better in my PRN class and
I m looking forward to going to clinicals and graduating with my classmates. I ve come very far
with different obstacles that I was faced with but I am determined and motivated to finish Miami
Dade College and become a nurse to give my daughter the future she deserves. I refuse to let
anything come in between me reaching my goals and finishing school. I ve learned now before I
withdraw from anything in life to look at other options in order to handle the situation better.
Education is extremely important to me and I am a student who is very serious about my future
and the upcoming semester will prove so. Regardless of my previous poor work ethic, I am a
mature person and if given a chance, I will display that what I had done in the past academically

People Who Do Crazy Things Are Not Necessarily Crazy Essay
People who do Crazy Things are not Necessarily Crazy Every human being faces at least one
affliction in his or her life that leads him or her to behave in an unusual manner. While some people
obtain support from others and learn how to handle situations correctly, others fight their battles
alone and find themselves committing unthinkable acts. One taking a dispositional view would
allegedly reach the conclusion that those who perform these unthinkable acts must suffer from
insanity. With an opposing outlook, social psychologists observe how certain individuals react to
difficult circumstances and determine why particular escapades occur as a result of distinct
settings. They understand that occasionally, these natural situations... Show more content on

Results proved that his brain function and hormone levels were normal and had nothing to do with
his sadistic behavior. A person suffering from psychosis often loses contact with reality and
contains no control of his or her actions in painstaking moments. Smith confessed that he influenced
naГЇve Derrick to follow him into the woods in order to kill him in private. He knew exactly
what he was doing and entirely understood the implications of his behavior. Furthermore,
throughout the initial trial, he did not once apologize for killing an innocent child. Even after the
crime was over with, Smith felt little remorse. It was not until the succeeding trial over a decade
later that he acknowledged his wrongdoing and asked for forgiveness. Finally, he attempted to
clearly answer the question that everyone had been waiting for a response to: why did he do it?
Smith avows that he now has morals, something that he did not previously have. He asserts that
no matter how minuscule an abuse situation, it all combines together to create a much larger issue
for the one being bullied. Eventually, the individual will not be able to endure anymore pain and
could potentially be driven to kill. Bullying can lead to a victim craving revenge and taking out
anger on someone seen as less significant. Smith himself explains this behavior in his testimony by
alleging that: it is not because they re evil or satanic little kids; it s because they want the abuse

National Health Care For The United States
According to Cothran (2015), Over the past five decades, there have been major shifts in how
we pay for hospital care, physician services, long term care, prescription drugs, and other
services and products . Before Medicare and Medicaid, about half of hospital care was not
covered by insurance. About 100 % of the spending on prescription medications came from the
customers in the 1960s (Cothran, 2015). But, in 2014, customers spent 15% less. Team B will
explain our position on national health care spending in the United States. We will also include:
current national health care costs, if we are spending too much or not, should we add or cut
spending and why, how health care needs are paid for, and future economic needs of the health...

The pharmaceutical industry is yet another part of health care that is receiving immense profits
from its advertisements and a physician prescribing only certain medications. The truth is that some
of the medicines can cause more harm than good. So who s really profiting? Truth is, that the
physicians and pharmaceutical companies are benefiting; when the doctor prescribes medications
that causes more issues than it cures, a revolving door is created so that the physicians and
pharmaceutical companies can keep gaining profits. For instance, if a patient receives medicine to
treat an ailment and it creates more health issues then the doctor will now keep prescribing
medications to fix an issue, when it is actually making the patient worse. By creating a need the
companies are able to keep themselves afloat. The federal budget was 3.8 trillion for the 2015
fiscal year. The government to take care of each and every American divides the 3.8 trillion; this
comes to about 12,000 per American ( National Priorities Project , 2015). Over 90% of federal
monies are used for mandatory and discretionary spending. The rest is spent on interest that the
government has accumulated. 1.11 trillion is the equivalent of what was spent in discretionary

Apollo was the NASA space program that resulted in the first moon landing. The program s
mission was the goal of the President John F. Kennedy who said, landing a man on the Moon and
returning him safely to the Earth. The program had a total of eleven space flights beginning in
1968 and ending in 1972. Four flights were used to test equipment and the rest were used to land
onto the moon. However, only six out of those seven actually made it to the moon. The third

Newts Vs Female Dating Essay
t may be time to crown male newts as the female arousing kings the amphibians release powerful
pheromones that put females in the mood to mate with practically any adult around, even other
females from different newt species, new research shows. The females react as if they re under
the influence of drugs, said lead researcher Franky Bossuyt, a biologist at Vrije Universiteit
Brussel (Free University of Brussels) in Belgium. We were convinced that if we put in a plastic

Newt mating game To find out, researchers placed male female pairs of alpine newts
(Ichthyosaura alpestris) and palmate newts (Lissotriton helveticus) into water filled plastic
containers for receptivity tests. The newts passed the test and were ready for the next phase if
they completed the courtship ritual (females weren t allowed to complete the insemination). The
team then put two female pairs into pheromone infused courtship water; some pairs consisted of
two alpine newts, other pairs had one female of each species. If the water contained pheromones
from a male of her species, the female would desperately try to court the other female. In some
cases, two female alpine newts tried to follow each other, resulting in the pair circling one another.
In some two species trials, one female chased after another, even as the unreceptive partner tried to
escape the container. [See video of the sex crazed newts] But the amphibians didn t remain patient

`` Brave New World `` By Aldous Huxley
John the Savage is the only person in this new world society born naturally from a mother and
not from a factory, John is a unique human being with an identity and a family relationship
unlike any other character in Aldous Huxley s novel, Brave New World . Even though he is the
son of two upper class utopians, he grows up in the depths of Malpais: The Savage Reservation.
Torn between two cultures, John is not truly a part of the savage society or of the new world
society. His only society is an imaginative world built around Shakespeare s books. John is the
ultimate outsider and his life is filled with confusion and struggle.
Although he does not appear until chapter seven of Brave New World , John is the protagonist of
the story and the symbol of the old world society. The outer appearance of John can reveal the
struggle within him. He may be dressed like a savage, but his light colored skin, blonde hair, and
blue eyes betray his origin. He was born on the Savage Reservation to Linda, a Beta minus who
had lived in the new world society before being abandoned on the reservation by the Director of
Hatcheries and Conditioning (The D.H.C.). The Director does not even know of his existence
until John later appears in London as an adult. His life on the reservation is miserable, because he
is not accepted by the other savages and cannot understand the lifestyle that his mother lives. As a
result, he is isolated and desires for something and somewhere to belong to.

The Death Penalty is Cruel and Unusual Punishment Essay...
We kill people to show them killing is wrong. The death penalty does not punish people for killing
but for murdering someone. Murder is the unlawful, malicious, or permitted killing of one human

murder is wrong.? The death penalty is racist, it punishes the poor, it causes the innocent to die, it is
not a deterrent against violent crime, and it is cruel and unusual punishment. The death penalty is

The 8th amendment says that excessive bail shall not be required, or excessive fines, or cruel
and unusual punishment. The commission of human rights is a group of people putting
guidelines for the death penalty so it really isn?t cruel and unusual punishment. They have five
main guidelines, here they are. The commission of human rights urges states to restrict the
number of death penalties happening per year. Every year there should be a decreasing amount
of executions. This would lead to the abolishing of the death penalty. They urge all states that
still hold the death penalty not to execute a person as long as any related legal procedure, at
international or national level. Lastly they try not to allow the executions of the mentally ill to
happen (Richard International 3). There are five ways to execute a person. The five are: lethal
gas, lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, and firing squad. The most commonly used are lethal
injection and electrocution. Lethal injection is when the people inject a shot into both of your
arms. It takes about three minutes until the acid kills you. Firing squad is when a group of
people has guns and the shoot at the murderers chest. The electric chair is when the chair gives
off 2300 volts for about ten seconds. Then there is a low voltage of 1000, which goes on for about
twenty seconds. But the murderer is usually dead by the first ten seconds. Lethal Gas is now only

Gay Marriage Research Paper
In today s society, there are many stereotypical people that are against gay or lesbian marriage.
Everyone should have the right to decide on who they would like to marry. Gay marriage should
be legal and a non punishable offense because it can prevent teenage suicides, more children will
be adopted, and people will not feel like second class citizens.
If humanity were to accept gay marriage, it would lower and prevent some teen suicides. Most
teens are deciding and revealing what path they are going to take in middle and high school. The
number of suicide attempts among high school students decreased in states where same sex marriage
was legal. The findings covered thirty two states that legalized same sex marriage from 1999 to
2015 (Willingham). All kids have a difficult time coming out to the world, and it causes them not
to feel heard or accepted. When states make it legal more people that do not support it change their
views when they see it is not different from a ordinary couple.
Many teens also feel less accepted by the world when it comes to other kids in their school. Students
that do not support others orientation creates a discomforting environment. Unsafe school
environments prevent LGBT students from reaching their full academic potential (Slater). The
children have to feel heard or they will fall into a depression and will shut out everyone that cares
about them. Therefore, safe spaces for LGBT students ( LGBT Youth ) Which will allow kids to

  • 2. The Manchurian Candidate by Johnathan Demme Essay The Manchurian Candidate, Johnathan Demme directed the remake. Both films portray paranoia, mind control, and conspiracy. Frankenheimer utilizes satire, humor, and symbolism to convey the themes, whereas, Demme uses modern fears, camera angles and focus, and mental illness to achieve similar results. Many of the elements of the 2004 remake have been modernized. While the original movie placed the soldiers in Korea, the remake placed them in Kuwait. Demme did changed the location of the war, in order to appeal to current fears and suspicions. In 1962, the threat of communism was at the forefront of everyone s thoughts. However, during 2004, only three years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, citizens were no longer concerned about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film switches between perspectives of the ladies garden party and the communist officials to stress the comic surrealism of the situation. The calm and genteel ladies garden party is a stark contrast to the evil plotting of the communists. Image overlay as well as soft lighting are also used to convey the surrealism and dreamlike quality. The absurd way that Eleanor s husband, Senator Iselin, presents the supposed number (which he is constantly changing) of communists in the state department, satirizes the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Many of the accused communists during the red scare were merely from wild speculation caused by irrational fear and political movements to get rid of the opposition. It was also ironic that Eleanor, who had her husband present the fake number of communists, was actually the communist herself. The role of a mother is also satirized in the film. The 1950 s portrayed mothers as pure and wholesome, however Eleanor is portrayed as the evil and conniving perpetrator of peril. The remake focused on keeping the audience and Major Marco in a constant state of paranoia and uncertainty. In the original movie, the audience is shown, as well as told by the narrator, that the platoon was captured and brainwashed by communists. Whereas, in the remake, Major Marco and the ... • 3. Uses of Voice Over Internet Protocol VOIP: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) can be defined as a series of technologies and technique that is used for release of voice communications and multimedia through Internet Protocol networks. In some cases, this technique is referred to as a means of converting analog audio signals into digital data that can be delivered through an InternetProtocol. The use of the technique is attributed to its ability to transform standard Internet connection into a platform for free phone calls. In the past few years, Voice over Internet Protocol has emerged as an innovative technology with the capability of completely transforming phone systems across the globe. As a result, VoIP providers have not only existed for a considerable period of time but are also growing steadily. However, the use of VoIP to rework modern phone systems is characterized by several advantages and disadvantages. Use of VoIP: The use of Voice over Internet Protocol is primarily an intelligent re invention of the wheel in the world s phone systems. Generally, this technique involves transmitting voice information in digital format in distinct packets instead of using the conventional circuit committed protocols of the public switched telephone network ( VoIP (voice over IP) , n.d.). This technique was developed following initiatives by major equipment providers to enhance the use of standard measures for transmitting voice and video using Internet Protocol within an intranet and across the public ... • 4. High School Vs. College Student High school Student vs. College Student School plays an important role in our life. Many of us will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to work in a specific field. Of course, those years are broken down into several levels, some of them being more liked than others. Two important steps that we go through are high schooland college. Even though some people would think they are almost similar, yet there are significant differences between them. The cost of high school educationis not the same as the cost of college education. Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment also differs from high school to college, a fact that can be related to the question of freedom versus responsibility. It is true to say that college is more expensive than high school. Of course, it provides a higher level of education, but by having such high fees it does not give a chance to them; coming from a family with a low income. Also, at college you have to buy your own books whereas in high school you borrow them from the school for a year. As they do for high schools, the government should pay for the books and then borrow them to students, as they do in high schools. Paying for the education you get is expensive, but many people have to pay even more. Many cities do not have colleges, so students who want to get a higher ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1832, the many tariffs hurt the state of South Carolina. Because of the disruption throughout the state, a convention was called to solve the problem. It took three major steps: It declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null and void within South Carolina. They also warned that they may succeed from the union because of the unfair tariffs. At this point, a way to prevent war was necessary and at the top of everyone s list. Tension was building when finally, Senator Clay of Kentucky came up with a compromise to appease everyone. Identity plays a big role in the world especially in America where not all identities are good. People might identify a wealthy person as snotty rich or a poor person as defective or maybe someone calls a man a woman when they re really a man. Or maybe you call someone a terrorist just because they are middle eastern. The list goes on and on and thats why social forces influence identities and can become dangerous. Gender, race, and social classare all forms of social forces. Race is everywhere in the world. But people need to understand that race isn t color. Anyone can have color; people can be a Hispanic and have very dark skin and still be referred to as a black person. Race is culture and culture is everywhere. It disgusting how we can t get along with each other and we re in the 21st century. In the race forum at John Hersey High school (Janu, Bruce) it was said that there s still a lot of racism going on in the world to this date. He gave the example of many lynchings in Texas. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Scouts dad is called a nigger lover (Lee Chapter 9) and the only reason he is called a nigger lover is because he is a lawyer and he helps anyone out when they are in trouble. Another example in the To Any Would Be Terrorists (Nye n.p) article says that when the word terrorist is said, people automatically think its referring to the middle eastor ... Usually there are a couple different factors in this situation, one is mental health and the other is unmet psychosocial needs. Many people that are employed by the prison system don t have the proper training to know how to test for the vast mental illnesses that need to be tested for. The results of what they found inspired them to keep looking for more. Dr. Cruchaga received his Association grant in 2011 for a study entitled Exome Sequencing of Late Onset Alzheimer s Disease Families. Dr. Cruchaga selected 14 families to observe who have inherited Late Onset Alzheimer. His team and him later analyzed the exomes from certain members of these families, searching for gene variations linked to Alzheimer s. This process initially identified a variation in PLD3 that was shown to double the risk of Alzheimer s disease in some cases. Previous research has found that people with Alzheimer s tend to have lower than normal levels of the PLD3 protein in their brains. This finding indicates that PLD3 may protect the brain against Alzheimer s like changes. In 2005 there were various report on gene therapy trials delayed disease progression. • 17. Egyptain Foreign Policy In Regards To Israel The United... The History of the conflict in the Middle East is long and well documented. To both, and to many biased observers the history of the Egyptian/Israeli conflict is very one sided, with one government, or one people causing the continued wars between the two neighboring states. But, as any social scientist of any reputation will state, all international conflicts have more than one side, and usually are the result of events surrounding, and extending over the parties involved. Thus, using this theory as a basis, we must assume that the conflict between Israeland Egyptis more complicated than a partial observer would see it. As mentioned, the Egyptians saw the formation of Israel as an Imperialist state, and they were defending the land for the Palestinians, and more importantly for the newly developing arab unity. While the United States was not actively involved in the war, either by providing arms or providing much assistance, their actions did create an interesting and volatile atmosphere. As soon as the state of Israel was created, the United State quickly recognized the state and started diplomatic relations with the newly formed government. At the same time, the USSR recognized Israel, not wishing the US to be seen as the champion for the newly found state. Although there is no definitive proof, one can assume that Egypt, and the rest of the Arab nations felt the need to quickly react to the situation, in almost a type of fear that powers outside their Arab influence, such as the United States were quickly impeding on their territory, by using Israel as a means of their peaceful aggression. Still, Egypt was clearly the main aggressor in this instance, and was not defending their own territory, but instead attempting to obtain territory, which they did succeed in acquiring, through the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian actions quickly set the tone of conflict in the Middle East, giving the Israelis no option but the take an initial purely military response in defense of their newly formed state. • 18. The History Of The World Wide Web The history of the World Wide Web was created on August 6th, 1991 by Tim Berners Lee. (Bryant, 2012). Due to the creation of the World Wide Web, many things have changed. Websites have made everything either easier or more complicated. But, we will talk about the easier this world has gotten. Some websites that have made life easier are Facebook, Strayer University, Amazon, EBay, Google, Gmail, Yahoo, PayPal, Walmart, Schwan s, Myspace , Pogo, Trip Advisor, and Home Chef. These are just to name a few of the websites that have made our lives easier. I could not agree more, that technology is like the Devil to many households making parents divorce due to lack of person to person communication, and it makes partners want to have infidelities in their relationships. But, nonetheless, websites like the ones I listed above are to make our lives easier. We will start with Social Networking sites. Social Networking sites, like Facebook, and Myspace, are to bring people closer to each other from distances away. I have known of many relatives finding each other after many years of not knowing each other, due to adoption and other circumstances. They always help connect business to the users. You will always see ads on the sides of Facebook while playing a game, if it is not full screen, of business that you might like. • 19. Theme Of Hunger For Power In King Lear The hunger for power is the root of the tragic outcome in King Lear. There are 3 characters that embodied this theme exactly. King Lear with his loss of power made him lash out. The way Edmund was treated made him want the power he could never have and deceive anyone to get it. Goneril s hunger for power made her go against those she supposedly loved. These three characters aren t only to blame for their own tragedies but the tragedies of every character. At the beginning of the play King Lear has more power than anyone else, the feeling of power made him think it was okay to ask his three daughters who loved him the most. When his youngest and favourite daughter Cordelia did not give him the answer he wanted by saying, Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My heart into my mouth/ I love your majesty / According to my bond, no more nor less (King Lear 1.1.91 93). he started lashing out. Lear clearly values Goneril and Regan fawning over him over Cordelia s sincere honesty. Out of pride and anger, Lear banishes Cordelia, as well as Kent for defending her. Lear splits the kingdom in half to Goneril and Regan which leads to the deaths of many people in the play. Throughout the play he becomes increasingly shocked when people do not obey him the way they did before and the lack of respect he receives. With his loss of power Lear often responds to these problems with anger saying things like My curses on her! (2.4.138). about his own daughter. By the end of the play he recognizes that he takes responsibility for both his own problems and for those of others. King Lear s actions were the first step to the plays tragic outcome. Unlike King Lear, Edmund has no power at the beginning of the play. Being Gloucester s youngest and illegitimate son he is not accepted by society or his father. Gloucester says in front of Edgar, His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge / I have so often blushed to acknowledge him that now I am brazed to it (1.1.8 9). Edgar, Edmund s older brother will inherit their father s wealth, land, and title. Knowing this Edmund s hunger for power has probably grown through the years, giving him the motivation to act the way he did. In 1.2 Edmund tells the audience that he s going to con ... • 21. Themes In Clybourne Park And Water By The Spoonful Themes are one of the most vital and critical elements of a play s overall significance and meaning. Without identifying what tools a playwright uses to construct his/her play through a close reading, such as language, character, or setting, the audience would lack a clear vision of the particular play s meaning. In the case of Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris, and Water by the Spoonful, by Quiara Alegria Hudes, race can be identified as a theme in both, through the use of literary devices, however it is explored much more subtly in Water by the Spoonful. Race is the major underlying theme in Clybourne Park, while the themes of community and addiction are dealt with in Water by the Spoonful. Nevertheless, each play is complete with examples... Karl s language in this quote, as in the previous, shows his character believes the black race should be separate from the white community, as he feels they are not equal. He reiterates this when he ignorantly says, ... fitting into a community is really what it all comes down to (64). Karl s character evidently proves the theme of race. Here the audience receives a reference to the theme of community. With the racism of the 1950 s comes the clear divide between the white and black community, however, the sense that there is still a divide remains in 2009, in the second act. The racism continues with another white male character, Jim, who pressures black housekeeper, Francine into admitting that her family and herself would not fit in or feel comfortable living in a white community. Jim asks, Would this be the sort of neighborhood you d find an attractive place in which to live? (70). Francine avoids confrontation and simply states, It s a very nice neighborhood (70). Her use of language is polite, as she does not want to start an argument. Instead of admitting they would not fit into such a community, as Jim was probing her to admit, she remains calm. Francine even agrees that there are differences between the two races, and that they live differently, saying in reply to Jim, I agree with that (73). • 28. The Morality Of Birth Control By Margaret Sanger The Morality of Birth Control In my quest to find a speech that was both written by a woman and made an impact towards the minorities of our country, I stumbled across the gem known as The Morality of Birth Control, given by Margaret Sanger in 1918. The main points of the speech are about the menace of overpopulation to the world, the spreading of knowledge about legalized birth controlmethods, and how limiting the population in a controlled way could make for a raised standard of our population. Margaret Sangerwas born as one of eleven kids in 1879 in New York. She lived in Corning, New York until 1910 where she moved and started a publication on a woman s right to birth control. In 1912, she started to write a column in a local newspaper called What Every Girl Should Know. Sanger gave the speech to stress the topic that without proper birth control, the morals of our offspring would be lowered, and therefore essentially lowering the standards of our human race in general. In her speech, Sanger divided humans into three groups. The ones who knew about birth control and had the means to access it, the ones who knew about it and did not have access, and the ones who had neither. It would change the very fabric of how Americans imagine themselves, how the economy of the country works, and how the nation was shaped. Therefore, it is paramount that much efforts are put into lowering infant mortality rates According to State of Health Report, Clayton County ranked high in infant mortality in the State of Georgia. In addition, it ranked highly in premature births and low birth weight. The most current data show the infant mortality rate to be 9.2, premature birth at 11.0 percent, and low birth weight at 10.4 percent among all ages and races.6 These disparities are much greater among the various age group and race. Because the issue of maternal and child health is such a major factor in the overall health of the population of Clayton County, the focus will be centered on the issues of infant mortality and the magnitude of the problem confronting the population of this ... • 38. Ruby Payne s Model Of Poverty, Middle Class SES is a dramatic way that approaches a person s labeled level of culture in society. This is categorized further by Ruby Payne s model of the three classes poverty, middle class, and wealthy. The Socioeconomic Status (SES) in Education Often times a teacher will have a mixture of students from different backgrounds. SES deals with the education, income, and occupation of the family members, while also corresponding to privilege, power, and control standings in society (American Psychological Association, n.d.). Sometimes, but not always knowledge of these things by teachers helps them to understand why a student lacks the necessary learning skills in order to succeed. High level of education is not always stressed in certain parts of society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a teacher believes this idea, then when the student fails, the teacher will feel he or she has no reason to fear repercussions by a parent or staff member. But, the critical idea is that not all children in this SES poverty category have the same attributes. Payne s writing does give more information to teachers about students, but it stereotypes them as a group rather than an individual. Another criticism is that children in poverty lack skills and experiences of the other two SES classes. In a way this is true because people of these two other SES classes get more toys, travel more, see more movies, and many other forms of entertainment. But, what is not stressed is children in poverty often appreciate more what they possess then the other two classes. That is because they are not afforded the opportunities to always get what they want. For example, one might take better care of their one pair of shoes if that is all they ... I would correlate each of the demographic factors to the self efficacy score to determine if any patterns emerge indicating that self efficacy has an impact on lifestyle and experiences outside of abuse, or conversely, whether lifestyle has an impact on self efficacy. This survey would be too limited to distinguish which is driving the other, except to say that a relationship of some kind exists, and that could provide a jumping off point for future research. I would also correlate each participant s self efficacy score to the scores from the biographical area as subdivided into these categories: total number of incidents, past offender against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To understand the variation in responses, I would identify the measures of dispersion for self efficacy scores and each of the maltreatment subcategories (past and present, victim, and offender against minor and against partner incidents). Discussion Needless to say, this survey would in no way provide conclusive information regarding how to break the cycle of violence. It would, however, provide insight into the connection that may exist between a person s level of self efficacy and their experience of abuse, both as victim and perpetrator. This would be extremely beneficial to anyone involved in assisting abuse victims because it would provide the knowledge and motivation to help clients develop self efficacy, thereby arming them with at least one of the requisite tools to safeguard them against becoming a victim or offender. My hope is that by enhancing victims self efficacy, future generations can be spared because victims will go forward making healthier choices than did their predecessors. That is assuming, of course, that my hypothesis is correct, and a high level of self efficacy is correlated to low involvement in the cycle of violence. Bandura, A. (1994). Self efficacy. • 43. The Destiny Of The Republic By Candice Millard President James Garfield s tragic death is brought to new life in the book The Destiny of the Republic. Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation together. This being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had everything under its belt but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time. Through poverty, war, a surprising turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President Garfield s life was a downward spiral and he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware that they were slowly beginning to unite over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau. Millard didn t just write a book of a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly of the personal yet challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story. The author really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father, worked endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going onto congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount of time. These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make ... These simple interactions can help us understand how to improve the criminal justice system even before jurors step into the courtroom. Asians, on the other hand, did not hide their biases. When the anti bias instructions were received, Whites and Asians had similar results. These results show that framing jury instructions and having Black people present in a White setting can help decrease bias in courts.
