A Time Of Rapid Industrialization
The period of time between the late 1800s and the early 1900s was a time of rapid industrialization in
the United States. The great American author, Mark Twain, dubbed this period the Gilded Age. Gilded
items are covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, which hides all that is inside. This idea is evident
in this time period because America s golden paint, or industrialization, was hiding all the economic
and social problems on the inside. Although the Gilded Age brought along great advances in
industrialization, it brought many new problems that were never experienced before. The politics of
this time period came up short when it came to dealing with the economic and social issues it faced.
Many of the economic problems of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Large corporations, like Rockefeller s, also used vertical integration, which is a model in which a
company controlled all aspects of production from raw materials to finished goods (Henretta,
Hindermarker, Edwards, Self, 2014, p. 547). By controlling all steps of the process, these businesses
were able to lower their prices because they could get a cheaper supply of materials. The only con to
vertical integration was that it required a large pool of starting capital to acquire the other businesses,
which perpetuated the cycle of the rich getting richer. James Bryce, author of The American
Commonwealth noted that during the Gilded Age there was a general neglect of details of politics that
had never been seen before , which allowed these large companies to take control over the economy
(Document 1). The government was too relaxed politically, and it was evident in how they handled
their affairs with large corporations. Consequently, the general neglect of political details ended up
lending itself kindly to some corrupt business practices. An example of these corrupt practices was a
trust, which was a small group of associates who hold stock from a group of combined firms and
managed them as a single entity (Henretta, 2014, p.548). These trusts were basically a cartel because
they were established as a loose organization of businesses that would collude and control the market.
The amount of power that large corporations possessed was not good

How To Write An Essay About The Trans-Shrop Lunatic Asylum
Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: One of the Scariest places in the World
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a time where the scariest places were in
work? How about the Riddle House located in Florida, where two grown men committed suicide and
are waiting for their next victims. The Bell Witch Cave is where a family was killed by spirits that still
are hungry for young blood. A little girl died and her soul lies in each of the dolls watching and
waiting for her killer at The Island of the Dolls located in Mexico. The Trans Allegheny Lunatic
Asylum is located in Weston, West Virginia. In the past, people who have entered this building have
instantly gained mental issues and were diagnosed with unusual diseases. The Trans Allegheny lunatic

In 1872, women could be sent there if their husband has a mistress or if she inherited money, he could
leave her until she dies or when he wants her back. The weaker gender, as women were defined at the
time the asylum first opened, also meant a strong attitude could land them in trouble, with
nymphomania and seduction and disappointment reasons for admission (http://www.dailymail.co.uk).
Women were treated unfairly and were often sent there for no reason at all. However, many were also
sent for these reasons: For being sexual abuse, time of life, viscous vice, and much more. There are
about 90 rules in total for why you can be sent to the Asylum. They got more patients as the civil war
started to become very serious. Many started to drag themselves to T.A.L.A. because they could not
keep up with the war, and about people dying everywhere they turned. As you can see that some ways
you can get into T.A.L.A. if you fall off and horse, or decoyed into the army. These rules came in
place because they thought that these admission rules made the person mentally

Nobody Knows Sparknotes
Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person s sense of humor
makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has various
consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man can understand
that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke shouldn t be taken to
heart. In the short story Nobody Knows, a man, who clearly has not mastered English, comes up to a
random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When the man says, Tell the cop that guys
like that, guys that don t know the scene the first impression of him is that he s a regular at the bar and
that the other man was new to the bar. This kid starts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played out,
the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man insulting his art
skills. Another reason why the man is at fault is that he didn t even know the person so why would he
make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to fights at times, depending on how
people throw the word dick around. After the ten second round ends, the man finds the stranger to help
him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I was the cop, the first thing I would tell the man is, Sir,
please learn how to speak and write English properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a
physics textbook. And second of all, why would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you?
The man could have easily done serious damage to the kid and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not
to mention that he s older than the kid and he s the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I
would need to say is, You re a grown man and what comes to your mind is telling a dick joke to some
kid you ve never

Technological Changes and Evolution
Over the course of a couple of years we ve seen technology change and evolve as scientists and
developers continue to develop mobile devices that will intentional become daily necessities for the
human kind. Who would have thought that mobile devices and handheld devices would become so
popular that you can find a young toddler using one to learn about different subjects and activities?
Cellular devices, mobile devices, and computers have evolved so fast that they re being used not only
to search or make your standard call or internet browse but also to pay bills, video chat, and pretty
much anything you can think of. Companies are now combining their profiles with developers to
come up with applications for phones and different handheld devices in order to better interact with
their customers. With the new wave of technology breaking so many barrels, that scientist in the past
would have never thought of years ago during the era of the first light bulb, one tends to wonder have
we as a race become too dependent on technology? What about the reliability of these applications we
have come so use to using on a daily bases? How do these applications measure up to the basic
knowledge and fundamentals that we once only knew and used? In this essay we go into depth on how
technology specific mobile device applications have helped us as a race and what possible risk may
come with using these applications. During the 1990s individuals had embraced the first major phase

Notes On Bonds And Bonds
Chapter One
Bond Basics
What are bonds?
Bonds are investment tools in form of a debt. When the government, corporate bodies, or
municipalities want to borrow from the public, they issue bonds. By investing in bonds, you are
simply lending your money to the issuer of the bond (government or a corporation) at an interest for a
given period of time. Usually bonds have a face value, which is the money being borrowed, the
coupon rate which is the interest rate to be paid to the investors and the maturity date, which is the
date you get paid the money you invested. Bonds are issued for varying period of time, may be three
months, one year or even five years.
When an organization issues a bond, it makes a commitment to you (investor) that it will make regular
(quarterly, biannually, or yearly) payment of the interest at a specified rate on the total amount it
borrowed from you (face amount) until the maturity date of the bond when it will repay the principal.
This simply means that when you invest in bonds you start earning interest regularly until the maturity
date of the bond when the issuer of the bond pays back the principle (money borrowed). Because of
the facts that you get paid interest regularly and the principle upon the maturity of the bond, this
investment instrument is often termed as a fixed income security.
Bonds alongside other investment vehicles such as term deposits and cash are often classified together
as income assets because they provide a reliable and

Theory Analysis And Skill Training
1. Briefly explain the concept of paradigm.
A paradigm is defined as the fundamental way in which we think and define reality. It may include
values and beliefs that influence our decisions on what is real and what is not. It is how we know the
things we know. It is our own awareness of ourselves as observers and knowers and may relate to how
we think and act in certain situations. It is also how we process what is real and how we present our
knowings to others. In a paradigm no right or wrong answers are presented but instead fundamental
assumptions are used.
2.What is the dominant paradigm guiding practice and research in special education? Explain a few
key features of this paradigm.
The dominant paradigm is known as the Newtonian Mechanistic Paradigm and is often referred to as
the machine paradigm. This paradigm views animals and humans as machines. Simplicity is very
important and all complexity is often broken down and translated. Information is arranged logically
and sequentially. The theory includes task analysis and skill training and has a focus on quantity
instead of quality. It also ranks human behavior. This method does not value personal knowledge or
individuality. It does not focus on the process of learning or students motivation for learning.
3. Can you cite any professional examples of mechanistic practice that you ve encountered? (or if you
are currently teaching, you may describe what you do that may exemplify mechanistic practice)

The Great Leap Forward
The Great Leap Forward was a creative yet disastrous interruption in Chinese economic development.
It is one of those moments in Chinese history that is the epitome of Mao Zedong s willingness to
experiment, as well as his political genius in seizing control of the forms of government out of the
hands of his intellectual and political adversaries within the Communist Party of China. Given that
more conservative leaders, such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping, were not in agreement with Mao
on the policies of the Great Leap Forward. The implementation of these policies resulted in disaster,
generating a crisis in Chinese society as well as a massive famine that would in the end be resolved in
ways unfavorable to Mao s political, economic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mao believed the new policy would be so successful in stimulating output and surplus resources that
the government would see a net gain in surplus captured from the countryside. Mao saw that this
surplus that could be invested in heavy industry, mining, and infrastructure among other things. This
optimism about the potential increases in productivity of rural laborers also encouraged the central
government to massively relocate labor from agriculture to industry. It would not appear that Mao nor
any of his top aides asked themselves one most important questions: What happens if the productivity
estimations are wrong?
Those on the political left also argued that the Great Leap Forward would help to slow the growing
urban unemployment issue. It was thought that the adoption of new technology in the rural areas, and
the development of more rural heavy industry, would generate more rural employment opportunities
and improve the incomes of rural peasants. These factors would not only eliminate one of the primary
motives for moving from the countryside to the urban areas, but would even result in a reversal of the
migratory flow, in other words, the industrialization of the countryside would create a better life and
people would want to return to the rural countryside from the cities.
The government did not rely completely on these economic policies to keep their people on the farms.

An Energy Source Is A Universal Objective For All Nations...
The search and need for an energy source is a universal objective for all nations on earth. Human
societies have been built on the consumption of natural resources for energy since the beginning of
human existence. The first source of course came from the burning of wood from trees to produce fire
that has kept humans warm and fed throughout the ages. With the evolution of human civilization the
need for more powerful energy sources have arisen. The industrial revolution of the early 20th century
demanded a new source which could keep up with humanities growing technologies. Coal, oil, and
natural gas now account for the vast majority of nation s sources of energy, but these resources have
only finite supply. Nuclear energy became an important next step in humanities source for a
sustainable energy source. In recent years though nuclear energy has started to decline in use primarily
due to the public s disapproval after such devastating nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl, Three Mile
Island and more recently the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan. This decline in nuclear energy is
not the case in China today, in fact they are making huge movements to ramp up their use of nuclear
energy. By looking at the history then taking an in depth look into recent nuclear power in China we
will be able to see why and how China is making such extensive leaps in nuclear energy.
In 1964 China created and tested its first atomic bomb and by 1966 China had launched its first

Anne Frank
The Diary of a Young Girl, written by Anne Frank herself, is a moving story of Anne s feelings,
thoughts, and observations throughout World War II. When I decided to read The Diary of a Young
Girl, I expected it to be mainly about the war, concentration camps, and the way the whole outside
world has dealt with the war. In actuality, the book was about the days and nights Anne Frank
experienced living in the secret annex. This made the book better because it opened my eyes to the
reality that Anne was a real person just like me. She had feelings, thoughts, friends, and family. Anne
was just an ordinary girl who went through something extraordinary. Having a great interest in WWII,
I have read many books about the topic. This one, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She would discuss places with such passion and detail that it felt like you were there with her looking

her. At one point in the annex she talked about how the doorways are low, so they would nail wool and
cloth to the tops of the doorways so that they would stop getting bruises on their foreheads. This made
me laugh. I pictured tall and lanky Otto Frank banging his head on the doorway. Also, Anne was just
talking about her favorite fountain pen for a page and I could tell you way more than you would need
to know about it. The whole book Anne talks with such detail, it is like you can see

Essay on Existentialism in Night
Existentialism in Night In his essay Existentialism , Jean Paul Sartre discusses the main beliefs of
existentialism. Perhaps the most important belief of existentialism is that there is no human nature,
and there is no God. This means that each individual man has control of his own destiny. The
definition of each individual man is the sum of his life and all he has accomplished in his life. He is
also responsible for all the choices and actions he makes in his life. These types of choices and actions
can be seen in the book Night by Elie Wiesel. This book is a story about a boy, Wiesel, who is taken to
a concentration camp with his family. It follows him and his father through their trials and movement
from Auschwitz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poor man Moshe the Beadle helps him; they would sit for hours and talk. Sartre would call this
existentialism. Wiesel took control of his own destiny and future, despite his father s wishes. He doesn
t let his father s efforts discourage him. He begins to learn the cabbala, which is an existentialist
decision since the main idea of existentialism is creating your own self.
Another example of an existentialist decision occurs in the concentration camp of Buna, when a young
boy is to be hanged with two adults. Many of the Oberkapos had little boys that they liked and had
hang around for sexual purposes. Someone at the camp was suspected of blowing up the electric
station, and eventually they found it to be the Dutch Oberkapo, and he was arrested. This Oberkapo
had a little boy (not his son), and he would not say whether or not the man had done it, so they
decided to hang him. Many of the men are thoroughly disturbed by the fact that the boy being hanged
was so young. Many of the young boys grew meaner than some adults, but the Dutchman s little
servant was loved by all. He had the face of a sad angel (60). The Lagerkapo who is supposed to do
the hanging refuses, and SS officers have to step in and perform the execution. This Lagerkapo shows
an existentialist decision because he takes control of his own life. He does not want his life to include
the hanging of a small boy. Remember, according to Sartre, a man s life includes

Example Of Romantic Comedy
Danielle Herrin
Section 7
Romantic Comedy
Romantic Comedy has been around for many generations enticing the public with ideas of love and
romance in a humorous way. According to Dictionary.com Romantic Comedy is defined as, a movie
or play that deals with love in a light, humorous way. For all romantic comedies to make this happen,
they follow three simple rules. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. As Brian Finnigan
from The Five Golden Rules of Romantic Comedy says, Different but the same, He wants She Wants,
turmoil, and learning curves . Although these technical terms are different, they mean the same thing.
Today that may look a little different but this is a staple part of romantic comedy that makes it

There was not much luck.
Animal comedy came during the late 70s and 80s. Due to the lack of character growth between the
beginning and the end of the movie, these films are great for sequels. Characteristically, animal
comedy is about pigs who want to have meaningless sex with women, and due to the lack of character
change, at the end of the movie, the characters still want to have meaningless sex with women.
The most used Romantic comedy style today is Modern American Romantic Comedy. The woman is
portrayed to be equal to the man. A great example that really changed the way romantic comedy was
viewed was When Harry Met Sally. Women gave their point of view on relationships and could
express equality with men. As James Murphy from moviereal.com states, Can men and women ever
be just friends? Is it possible to move on from the one you love? Is love at first sight ever true love? Is
there just one person for everyone? Can I be a big corporate superman AND a decent human being?
Etc. These are some questions from romantic comedies that prove the point that women were viewed
differently in this film and that caused movies the future movies to change the way the portray women
and men together.
Finally, Geek Comedy began in 1998. Like animal comedy the characters start out wanting to have
meaningless sex with the opposite sex. The difference is there is a character change throughout the
storyline and by the end of the

What kind of tribe is the Eneon? We do not have much information about this tribe as the
anthropologists had just found out their existence. We only have limited information we received from
the anthropologists. The information are based on the environment and climate they live in, the food
they eat, their family and children, books and arts and their social aspect and attitudes toward war that
the Eneon tribe are live in. According to the report provided by the anthropologists about Eneon, there
are three words for terrain designating absolutely flat, rolling, and slightly hilly . Therefore they all

Furthermore, as the Enoen have seven terms to describe the stages of life up to puberty and only one
word from puberty to death, with this we can tell that they have many stages once the child is born till
the day he or she is eighteen, and maybe only have 1 word for puberty to death, because at this point
Eneon do not have anything else to explain; therefore the word woman are synonymous with wife and
mother and man for husband and father with this information we can assume the adults will be taking
care of all the children, and as they pass the puberty they are unable to gain new knowledge. It also
appears that they have twenty words for books, so perhaps they are twenty stages of books they have
to use through out their birth to death; therefore they are a very educated tribe. We can assume that
Eneon people have very high pride in art. We can infer this because they have nine words for artist.
They also seem to have many interests toward theater as well, as they have four words that mean
theater. They have a word praise that is translated as peacemaker and conciliator ; we assume that they
have a person in the tribe that is making sure that there are no fights between each person. Since
everyone in the tribe have gone through a high education system, which makes each

Hofstede s Six Cultural Dimensions
Hofstede s Six Cultural Dimensions
The Hofstede s six cultural dimensions were created collectively by Geert Hofstede, Michael Bond,
and Michael Minkov. These dimensions of culture were created to view how values in the workplace
were influence by a particular culture of a given country. Essentially, it was a tool to describe how
workforces in different countries operate under their own culture. There are currently six different
dimensions of national cultures; power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity,
long term orientation, and indulgence versus restraint. Professor Greet Hofstede was the creator of the
first four cultural dimensions, back in 1973. Roughly two decades later, Michael Bond with the
support of Hofstede created the fifth dimension, in 1991. Recently in the 2010, the last dimension was
added to the list, by Michael Minkov and his research team (Minkoy Hofstede, 2011). The first four
dimensions discovered by Hofstede, dealt with four different anthropological issues that were handled
differently from nation to nation. These issues involved; methods of coping with inequality and
uncertainty, relationships within a primary group, and the emotional significance of having been born
as male or female (National, n.d.). The fifth dimension is long term orientation. Long term orientation
provides the idea that a given culture or country prefers to do things in an old fashion manner or in a
modernized pragmatic approach. The last dimension,

Cultural Beliefs And Influences Of Obesity
CLC Health Issue Analysis: Part V Mary Capen, Sena Henson, Peace Okienya, LeonardOppong
Brenyah, Linda Jones Grand Canyon University: Nur 508 September 12, 2015 Cultural beliefs and
Influences Relative to Obesity Various regions of the world have different responses to the issue of
obesity. Some cultures view obesity as necessary and attractive while others are taking drastic
measures in an attempt to promote a healthy lifestyle. Although some of these drastic changes seem a
bit invasive and controversial, policy makers are debating whether it is effective and even whether or
not such a policy should be adopted in the United States. According to the article written by Gallagher,
a culture sensitive approach should be implemented in order to tackle the issue of global obesity. A
study of children of Mexican descent showed that about 32.6% of Mexican children occupying the
U.S. are overweight and about 19.2% are obese (Gallagher 2010). The parents observed in this study
were serving their children unhealthy foods, such as those from cans and fast food restaurants, due to
price and convenience (Gallagher 2010). Cultural beliefs regarding obesity also include perspectives
on body size and whether or not obesity is a disease, an illness or just an issue created by Western
influences (Brewis, 2011). Some cultures accept a larger body size and do not view this as unhealthy
but instead, accept it as expected and culturally acceptable. Brewis (2011), explains that

Descriptive Essay On Suburban Life
I don t know if the American Dream in its current form is dead, with the large homes fenced off with
white picket fences, a lush green yard in the front, an expansive yard in the back, and the entire family
together in that home that they own. I m honestly not sure if people still want that specific idealized
image of a house in the suburbs as their actual permanent home. As a young person who is sometimes
considered a Millennial depending on who you ask, I can only speak of my own experiences as well as
of those around me. As a city kid, growing up in a small walkup in the middle of Queens, I was kind
of in between the suburb/urban lifestyle where I was only a few minutes from the city life and on a
very quiet Sunday afternoon, lived the suburban life. It sucked. I was in a neighborhood where the
rents were constantly rising but the actual condition of the area was getting worse. There was constant
construction, grifters, rats, bad neighbors, car accidents, and decaying infrastructure. Trees were cut
down near my house and the roots were left to rot. Yet, everywhere I went, houses were being bought,
renovated, and rented out. And people were moving in. I couldn t understand why. And then I went to
college where dorming was an option. And my sister wanted to move out and was apartment hunting.
We both so desperately wanted that chance of being independent from our parents, living it out in
Manhattan. But we couldn t. It was too expensive to move out. Coming from a upper

Dubliners Research Paper
Dubliners by James Joyce is a collection of stories centered around Joyce s intentions to write the
moral history of Dublin s paralysis. Although paralysis seems to be the main theme in Dubliners,
another motif comes across in the pages of the stories. As if all of the mental, physical, and emotional
problems weren t enough, many of the characters in Dubliners are alcoholics. Joyce utilizes the
character of the drunk in many of the stories in Dubliners; hardly a story skips a mention of a drink.
The negative effects of alcohol occur again and again through the collection of stories. For the most

Alcohol Abuse Research Paper
The negative effect of alcohol have been well documented and scientifically proven. The United
States National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that 1,825 college students between
the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol related unintentional injuries. furthermore 599,000
students between the ages of 18 and 24 receive unintentional injuries while under the influence of
alcohol. These statistics show just how easy it is for young drinkers to abuse alcohol. Many young
drinkers are aware of such statistics. Despite that they continue to consume alcohol. Perhaps we ll

A couple of years ago, he wrote an article called Lessons My Sons Taught Me. In this article Chiarella
discusses various things he learned about shopping just by watching his sons shop. Here we see
Chiarella using the concept of learning through observation again. The fact that Chiarella uses this
concept in real life makes his argument a lot more reliable, because we see that he is not just writing
about this concept he is actually using it in real life. In the article we also learn that he has two sons.
His older son is eighteen and his younger son is sixteen. What that tells us about him is that although
he drinks, he was still able to build a family. He has mastered alcohol indeed. Additionally, he also
writes about many different topics such as money, life, sports ,music, and psychology. This shows us
that his life does not revolve around alcohol. He is interested in many other things. He writes about
different forms of entertainment, unlike Bukowski who only wrote about the struggles of life. This is
another great example for young drinkers. They must see that if they can master alcohol, they can still
build a family and do whatever interest them, it doesn t mean that their lives will revolve around

Analysis Of The Moths By Helena Maria Viramontes
For many individuals, life may seem boring and pointless throughout most of their day. They might
feel empty at times and question themselves who they really are. Although most of their time is spent
doing tasks in their everyday lives, there are those interests in which they look forward to doing.
These interests may range depending on the person. It may be watching television for some, playing
games for others, or simply spending time with your loved ones in which you enjoy and make you feel
like yourself. This was the case for the individual in The Moths by Helena Maria Viramontes. She

Grandma s house as a normal routine in which she had gotten used to. She would not argue with going
to her Grandmas because she enjoyed the little things she would do with her grandma. She felt a sense
of pride and full of joy when being along her side. I always felt her gray eye on me. It made me feel,
in a strange sort of way, safe and guarded and not alone. Like God was supposed to make you feel
(33). These were only things she experienced when being with her grandma. Although they would
hardly talk, she would feel happy because she knew her grandma was happy for her too. This was an
interest in which the narrator took great joy in. With things such as cooking, cleaning or running
errands for her grandma she was able to be herself and enjoy the time in which she spent there.
Although those negative comments were her major conflict, this negativity also benefitted her in a
way. If it wasn t for those fights in which she would get into, she would not spend as much time as she
liked with her grandma. With all the time spent with her Grandma, she was able to find a relationship

How Does Antony Use Ethos In Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar essay Speaking to a group of people is troublesome, but striving to make them feel and
comprehend the purpose is even more complex. Pathos, ethos, and logos are rhetorical strategies to
persuade a crowd to feel a certain way. Speakers and writers use these devices to pursue their point of
view to an audience. When a speech makes the crowd feel a certain way or makes them have an
emotional connection to the topic then the speaker is using pathos. Logos is the connection to logic. In
other words the speaker makes correlations to make the crowd feel that the point of the speech is
logical. Ethos is credibility. The speaker therefor makes points in his or her speech that make him or
her credible. Pathos is the most effective out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

receives an emotional connection with the audience. As he mourns over Caesar s death the crowd
starts to feel the sadness from the death of their friend and leader Caesar. Antony states in his speech,
But yesterday the word of Caesar might have stood against the world; now lies he there. And none so
poor to do him reverence. In this instance he uses feelings to his advantage. He states that yesterday
Caesar was here and now he is dead and no one seems to care that their once caring friends is gone.
He is making them feel remorseful for dishonoring Caesar. The crowd starts to feel the guilt on their
shoulders. Antony uses guilt to his advantage. As Antony expresses, Have patience, gentle friends. I
must not read it; It is not meet you know how Caesar loved you. You are not wood. You are not stones,
but men; And, being men, bearing the will of Caesar. he uses pathos in a palpable manner. He attracts
the men s feelings and empowers them by declaring them as men. He is explaining that the will will
extricate emotions from them because all humans have feelings. Pathos is an effective component in

Power Of Romanticism In Sailing To Byzantium By W. B. Yeats
Yeats poetry is driven by a tension between the real world in which he lives and an ideal world world
that he imagines. Respond to the studied poetry in light of this statement.
W.B Yeats is a poet famous for his romantic, and often ironic, portrayals of the world and us, its
inhabitants. His struggle to reconcile the reality of human life with the model world he writes of, and
so desperately yearns for, resonates through his poetry and lends a profound depth to his work.
Yeats enchantment at the beauty of earth, the marvels of nature and life, the power of art and that of
academics, lies in striking contrast with the bitter despondency he feels at aspects of the reality he
finds himself in. His longing for longevity and fear of death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Racial Inequality And Mathew Weiner s Smart Yet Subtle...
A lot has been made of Mad Men s take on the period s fashion and culture. From the ad agency, the
alcoholism to beards, racial inequality and Mathew Weiner s smart yet subtle dialogue. His AMC
drama uses setting to bolster character, and character to bring to light many predominant themes.
One of the show s distinctive qualities is its tendency to use side characters in order to underline the
show s thematic goals. This has mainly been applicable when with Mad Men s queer characters.
Where a less complex show might utilize a homosexual character randomly, the queers on this show
reflect an evolution which reflects the changing of the society as a whole. In this way, everyone from
season one s quiet and in the closet Sal to Season 6 s more aggressive Bob Benson drives viewers

Role of Women in the Paleolithic and Modern Period
Role of Women in the Paleolithic and Modern Period

Role of Women in the Paleolithic and Modern Period * Women of the Paleolithic and Modern periods
both have role models that have different meanings such as their role in society and their body image;
however the way the males have treated these women showed little respect. During the Paleolithic
period a sculpture was carved from using simple carving tools to create a masterpiece that is known
today as the Venus of Willendorf. The Venus of Willendorf has suggested to archeologists that the
sculpture was to have been an image of fertility, which is how their existence survived for so many
years. Looking at the sculpture also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These different roles are what have inspired women; if you can imagine it then you can become it. In,
1992 President Barbie was created which led the way for the feminist that shape the future political
leaders (Zaslow amp;Schoenberg, 2012). The United States had the first female run for office in 2008,
only 16 years after President Barbie was introduced to the young women of America. This is only the
beginning of what the women of today s society are going to do as a political leader.
Venus of Willendorf was a role model for the perfect female form for her obesity; however today
women have strived to have the Barbie look. In the, Stone Age fat was beautiful because it meant
vitality and fertility (Paige, 2004, p. 4). There were many different body shapes of woman from the
Paleolithic period, but there is only one that really stood out and served as a role model for their
village. Venus of Willendorf is sculpted in a way that clearly shows her obesity and why she is the role
model for the Paleolithic period. She was sculpted with a large stomach that overhangs a fat roll that
extends around the middle, a flat butt and large thighs that are pressed together on her knees. This is
one of the earliest signs of obesity in women and they still struggle with this in the modern society.
In today s society everyone has imagined to have that perfect body. Many experts have suggested that
Barbie is a root cause for many problems with women

Over the past centuries, since its discovery in 1749, many archaeologists have contributed to our

most of which were improperly done causing extensive damage. It wasn t until the 19th century, when
archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli introduced new excavation methods; those succeeded him include
August Mau, Vittorio Spinazzola and Amendo Maiuri. Now attention has shifted towards
conservations and restorations which are reflected in the works of Fausto Zevi and Pier Guzzo.

Spinazzola introduced photography to record the stages of his excavation, an example of a
conservation technique. His work enables us to learn about the streetscapes of Pompeii.
Amendo Maiuri grand vision was to reconstruct the entire site to its original appearance. He excavated
right around the walls of Pompeii, uncovering the cemetery as well as significant buildings eg.
insulaes along the via dell Abbondanza, the amphitheatre and the palaestra. Maiuri used mechanical
equipment to clear away debris from earlier excavations and to assist in areas that previously had been
considered too hard to excavate. As part of conservation, Maiuri restored the walls and ceilings and
erected roofs for protection. However, he was criticized for excavations that were done too quickly
with little documentation. Some excavated buildings were unprotected and wall paintings faded
without ever being recorded. However, Maiuri s great enthusiasm for the site and the important
buildings he uncovered, attracted many tourists and made Pompeii well known internationally.
Following 1977, Fausto Zevi halted excavations and started focusing on conservations instead as both
Pompeii and Herculaneum were dying a second death due to improper excavations exposure to natural
elements. Zevi recorded the uncovered buildings and took many photographs, resulting in over 1800
photos.
In 1995, Pier Guzzo oversaw many restoration developments.

I don t think that s a coincidence. What needs to be done before a company can begin to compete on
analytics? DAVENPORT: There are two major prerequisites. One is human, and the other is technical.
The human prerequisite is that you need to have leaders who appreciate and understand what it
means to compete on analytics, and want to do it. Second, having high‐quality, integrated, clean data
is something of a prerequisite. One of the reasons that companies are interested in this right now is
because they finally have access to all this data from ERP systems, Web reports, point‐of‐sale systems
and so on. Today the tools that SAS and others provide for integrating and cleaning data are better
than ever before. From there, what are the stages of competing on analytics? DAVENPORT: I call
stage one analytically impaired, which means some fatal flaw is keeping the company from doing
much with analytics at all. Either the executives just don t care or they have bad transaction data or
they have lots and lots of data silos around the organization ‐ something major keeping them from
doing this at all. Stage two is what we used to think of as a best practice in business intelligence,
which is a lot of little pockets of analytical activity around the organization ‐ not connected, no vision
of what you could do with it at all. I sometimes call this the Aleutian Island strategy: There are a lot

Cinderella In Charles Perrault s Cinderella Frozen In Time
Cinderella Frozen in Time: Why Cinderella continues be portrayed as a victim in the era of feminism
Cinderella has changed so little over time that it seems we re still in the 1700 s reading Charles
Perrault s first edition. And yet it remains one of the most popular fairy tales read to
Joshi 8 children. The role of women continues to be either the cruel, evil one or the good, docile one
while the prince continues to be the saving grace of the helpless girl. The skeleton hasn t changed
much as well. A damsel in distress, saved by a knight in shining armor, who falls in love with her and
they live happily ever after. Does this sound familiar? This sentence might as well be a fairy tale. We
ve seen this over and over in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
I chose Cendrillon or the Little Glass Slippers by Charles Perrault as my fairy tale. I grew up reading
the Disney story book, inspired by Perrault s version. I can still imagine the animated faces even
though it s been years since I ve read that book. My tale is a modern adaptation of Cendrillon, where
the character is not weak willed or naive. The main focus is on justice and on her relationship with her
step siblings and her Prince which is much more than superficial attraction. In Perrault s version,
Cinderella s father remarries after the death of her mother. Her step mother s cruel treatment and
aggravation is due to her own daughters unpleasant deposition when compared to Cinderella s good

Winter Symbolism In Literature Essay
When you think of winter what do you usually think about? I think about the freezing temperatures,
the ice, and the snow. However, in literature winter can be symbolic of many things. The dark,
sadness, old age, and death are just some of the things winter can symbolize in literature. The songs
California dreamin by the Mamas and Papas and A hazy shade of winter by Simon and Garfunkel are
both about winter but mean very different things. Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor
will also be referenced in order to help show the meanings of these pieces. California dreaming is a
very simple and straightforward song;. It has three short verses and a chorus that repeats a couple of
times. California dreamin on such a winter s day is repeated throughout the song. This is the main
essence of the song. The narrator is telling us that he likes the warm and sunny days of California
more than the cold harsh winter. Throughout this song we learn of other things that the narrator
dislikes which are gray skies and brown leaves. These signify the arrival of winter which saddens the
narrator. There s also a deeper meaning that can be figured out with the help of Foster s work. In his
book he tells us that the cold often can symbolize sadness and that warm often symbolizes happiness.
One of the many possible meanings that the mamas and papas could be trying to convey is that it isn t
easy to be happy. In the song the narrator arrives at a church and is going to stay. Even though he isn t
very happy he would rather be in the church than in the cold as shown in the next verse where he starts
to complain about the cold again. We can learn from this message to be thankful for what we have
even though it isn t what we want because it could always be worse. In A Hazy Shade of Winter by
Simon and Garfunkel the narrator sends a clear message that he does not like the arrival of winter.
When you hear the song you can tell how much he doesn t like the winter anytime anything related to
it is said. His voice becomes low, dull and lifeless. The way he sings tries to makes you associate
sadness with the winter. To the narrator the winter may be sad because it is cold but if we look deeper
into the song we

themes, one including male and female relations. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza encountered male

For example, in one part of the story a man, Grisistomo, died for a woman, Marcela, because of her
rejection after he declared to love her: (Grisistomo) followed her example by becoming shepherds,
each hoping that in this manner he might be able to win her... the funeral ceremony is to be a most
unusual one, and people from far and wide are coming to witness it. (Cervantes 139). Unlike an ideal
relationship as stated previously, Cervantes portrayed young lovers as turbulent and immature.
Grisistomo just wanted to be with Marcela, but Marcela was too cruel to even realize that Grisistomo
loved her. Cervantes emphasized this cruelty through somber diction with words such as funeral, and
hoping, because even though Grisistomo loved Marcela, she was far too cruel to realize that he loved
her. One other situation of young love in the story was with Dona Rodriguez and the squire. Dona
Rodriguez married the squire, but one day he died: she had unjustly dismissed the squire and it was
grief over this that brought on his death. (Cervantes 619). Dona Rodriguez was immature and young,
so she dismissed the squire, which brought upon grief. Later, Rodriguez had to raise an infant child
alone. Cervantes specifically used the word grief, in this statement to emphasize that grief that
Rodriguez would later feel. The use of this word was an example of disappointing diction. Dona
Rodriguez s relationship with the squire showed that young lovers tend to have turbulent affairs,
which later lead to tragic conclusions, such as the death of the squire or the death of Grisistomo with
Marcela. Cervantes taught the reader that young lovers are obviously inexperienced and their
inexperience tends to lead to tragedy in their

Polonius And Hamlet Analysis
Polonius and Hamlet: The Weavers of Deceits.
The tragedy of Hamlet brings to the stage the palace intrigues of a corrupt Denmark, where the lust for
power leads to the assassination of the King, at the hands of his own brother who usurps his throne.
Hamlet, a young student and model soldier struggles to deal with a harsh reality that leads him to
doubt the whole world. The enigmatic nature of Hamlet, whose speeches and actions lend to multiple
interpretations, generates a sense of uncertainty in the reader that is intensified by the climax of
tension that transpires throughout the work. It is in this climate of deception that Hamlet elaborates a

The pathos is further reinforced by the words of Horatio, who enters the scene saying, A piece of him,
by answering to Barnardo, who was looking for him. The appearance of the ghost of the deceased king
is the reason for such discomfort and reluctance. The ghost itself is a bearer of bad news that will lead
to a sequence of acts of revenge as if to suggest that vengeance is a frosty wind emerging from the
subconscious (intangible) but leading to tangible consequences. It is interesting to note the author use
of minor characters as useful wires to weave the plot of a play. However, reading the set and the
characters through a symbolic lens, the castle, the tower and the guards allude to the confinement, I
would dare to say, to the burial of the consciousness of an ego overthrown by material power. King
Claudius himself embodies the thirst for power that blurs the mind and takes over even on the blood
ties. A fact that is to be considered sacrilegious and a harbinger of inevitable defeats, as announced by
the words of the Danish soldier Marcellus, Something is rotten in the state of Denmark a sentence
passed to history and still used today as an allusion to a level of corruption that will lead to ruin (100).
As mentioned in the introduction, the author s mastery finds full vent in the speeches of Polonius, who
offers questionable pieces of advice to everyone, left and

Private School Vouchers Essay
30 years ago, America was the leader in quantity and quality of high school diplomas. Today, our
nation is ranked 36th in the world. (Coleman, 2013) In the United States, a debate continues about
how to address the issues of the education system. Some conservatives think that it is beneficial to
take money away from public schools and provide students with private school vouchers so they can
choose between private and public schools. While most liberals believe that there is no real choice and
that taxpayer money should go toward strengthening our current public schools. Although some

Public schools are primarily supported by taxpayers. However, when a public school loses a student to
a voucher program, it loses thousands of dollars that help pay for teachers and classroom costs. In this
way, school vouchers take money away from public schools in order to help students compensate for
the immense cost of private schools. Consequently, public schools suffer and are not able to provide
quality services for their students. Furthermore, school vouchers usually only cover the amount that a
typical public school would receive per student. This comes out to around $10,000 to $12,000 per
student. However, this amount is not enough to cover the tuition of most private schools. Many
families feel stuck between paying for the rest of the private school tuition and sending their children
to a struggling public school that is now even worse off because funding is being syphoned off for
vouchers. For this reason, the choice that school vouchers give low income families is only putting
them at a disadvantage. Due to the high cost of private schooling, one would think that student
achievement would increase in this setting, however, this is not the case. An article from

  • 2. A Time Of Rapid Industrialization The period of time between the late 1800s and the early 1900s was a time of rapid industrialization in the United States. The great American author, Mark Twain, dubbed this period the Gilded Age. Gilded items are covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, which hides all that is inside. This idea is evident in this time period because America s golden paint, or industrialization, was hiding all the economic and social problems on the inside. Although the Gilded Age brought along great advances in industrialization, it brought many new problems that were never experienced before. The politics of this time period came up short when it came to dealing with the economic and social issues it faced. Many of the economic problems of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Large corporations, like Rockefeller s, also used vertical integration, which is a model in which a company controlled all aspects of production from raw materials to finished goods (Henretta, Hindermarker, Edwards, Self, 2014, p. 547). By controlling all steps of the process, these businesses were able to lower their prices because they could get a cheaper supply of materials. The only con to vertical integration was that it required a large pool of starting capital to acquire the other businesses, which perpetuated the cycle of the rich getting richer. James Bryce, author of The American Commonwealth noted that during the Gilded Age there was a general neglect of details of politics that had never been seen before , which allowed these large companies to take control over the economy (Document 1). The government was too relaxed politically, and it was evident in how they handled their affairs with large corporations. Consequently, the general neglect of political details ended up lending itself kindly to some corrupt business practices. An example of these corrupt practices was a trust, which was a small group of associates who hold stock from a group of combined firms and managed them as a single entity (Henretta, 2014, p.548). These trusts were basically a cartel because they were established as a loose organization of businesses that would collude and control the market. In 1872, women could be sent there if their husband has a mistress or if she inherited money, he could leave her until she dies or when he wants her back. The weaker gender, as women were defined at the time the asylum first opened, also meant a strong attitude could land them in trouble, with nymphomania and seduction and disappointment reasons for admission (http://www.dailymail.co.uk). Women were treated unfairly and were often sent there for no reason at all. However, many were also sent for these reasons: For being sexual abuse, time of life, viscous vice, and much more. • 4. Nobody Knows Sparknotes Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person s sense of humor makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has various consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man can understand that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke shouldn t be taken to heart. In the short story Nobody Knows, a man, who clearly has not mastered English, comes up to a random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. The way everything played out, the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man insulting his art skills. Another reason why the man is at fault is that he didn t even know the person so why would he make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to fights at times, depending on how people throw the word dick around. After the ten second round ends, the man finds the stranger to help him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I was the cop, the first thing I would tell the man is, Sir, please learn how to speak and write English properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a physics textbook. And second of all, why would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you? The man could have easily done serious damage to the kid and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not to mention that he s older than the kid and he s the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I would need to say is, You re a grown man and what comes to your mind is telling a dick joke to some kid you ve never ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the government, corporate bodies, or municipalities want to borrow from the public, they issue bonds. By investing in bonds, you are simply lending your money to the issuer of the bond (government or a corporation) at an interest for a given period of time. Usually bonds have a face value, which is the money being borrowed, the coupon rate which is the interest rate to be paid to the investors and the maturity date, which is the date you get paid the money you invested. Bonds are issued for varying period of time, may be three months, one year or even five years. When an organization issues a bond, it makes a commitment to you (investor) that it will make regular (quarterly, biannually, or yearly) payment of the interest at a specified rate on the total amount it borrowed from you (face amount) until the maturity date of the bond when it will repay the principal. This simply means that when you invest in bonds you start earning interest regularly until the maturity date of the bond when the issuer of the bond pays back the principle (money borrowed). • 7. Theory Analysis And Skill Training 1. Briefly explain the concept of paradigm. A paradigm is defined as the fundamental way in which we think and define reality. It may include values and beliefs that influence our decisions on what is real and what is not. It is how we know the things we know. It is our own awareness of ourselves as observers and knowers and may relate to how we think and act in certain situations. It is also how we process what is real and how we present our knowings to others. In a paradigm no right or wrong answers are presented but instead fundamental assumptions are used. 2.What is the dominant paradigm guiding practice and research in special education? Explain a few key features of this paradigm. The dominant paradigm is known as the Newtonian Mechanistic Paradigm and is often referred to as the machine paradigm. This paradigm views animals and humans as machines. Simplicity is very important and all complexity is often broken down and translated. Information is arranged logically and sequentially. The theory includes task analysis and skill training and has a focus on quantity instead of quality. It also ranks human behavior. This method does not value personal knowledge or individuality. It does not focus on the process of learning or students motivation for learning. 3. Can you cite any professional examples of mechanistic practice that you ve encountered? It is one of those moments in Chinese history that is the epitome of Mao Zedong s willingness to experiment, as well as his political genius in seizing control of the forms of government out of the hands of his intellectual and political adversaries within the Communist Party of China. Given that more conservative leaders, such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping, were not in agreement with Mao on the policies of the Great Leap Forward. It would not appear that Mao nor any of his top aides asked themselves one most important questions: What happens if the productivity estimations are wrong? Those on the political left also argued that the Great Leap Forward would help to slow the growing urban unemployment issue. It was thought that the adoption of new technology in the rural areas, and the development of more rural heavy industry, would generate more rural employment opportunities and improve the incomes of rural peasants. These factors would not only eliminate one of the primary motives for moving from the countryside to the urban areas, but would even result in a reversal of the migratory flow, in other words, the industrialization of the countryside would create a better life and people would want to return to the rural countryside from the cities. • 9. An Energy Source Is A Universal Objective For All Nations... The search and need for an energy source is a universal objective for all nations on earth. Human societies have been built on the consumption of natural resources for energy since the beginning of human existence. The first source of course came from the burning of wood from trees to produce fire that has kept humans warm and fed throughout the ages. With the evolution of human civilization the need for more powerful energy sources have arisen. The industrial revolution of the early 20th century demanded a new source which could keep up with humanities growing technologies. Coal, oil, and natural gas now account for the vast majority of nation s sources of energy, but these resources have only finite supply. Nuclear energy became an important next step in humanities source for a sustainable energy source. In recent years though nuclear energy has started to decline in use primarily due to the public s disapproval after such devastating nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and more recently the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan. This decline in nuclear energy is not the case in China today, in fact they are making huge movements to ramp up their use of nuclear energy. By looking at the history then taking an in depth look into recent nuclear power in China we will be able to see why and how China is making such extensive leaps in nuclear energy. When I decided to read The Diary of a Young Girl, I expected it to be mainly about the war, concentration camps, and the way the whole outside world has dealt with the war. In actuality, the book was about the days and nights Anne Frank experienced living in the secret annex. This made the book better because it opened my eyes to the reality that Anne was a real person just like me. She had feelings, thoughts, friends, and family. • 11. Essay on Existentialism in Night Existentialism in Night In his essay Existentialism , Jean Paul Sartre discusses the main beliefs of existentialism. Perhaps the most important belief of existentialism is that there is no human nature, and there is no God. This means that each individual man has control of his own destiny. The definition of each individual man is the sum of his life and all he has accomplished in his life. He is also responsible for all the choices and actions he makes in his life. These types of choices and actions can be seen in the book Night by Elie Wiesel. This book is a story about a boy, Wiesel, who is taken to a concentration camp with his family. Sartre would call this existentialism. Wiesel took control of his own destiny and future, despite his father s wishes. He doesn t let his father s efforts discourage him. He begins to learn the cabbala, which is an existentialist decision since the main idea of existentialism is creating your own self. Another example of an existentialist decision occurs in the concentration camp of Buna, when a young boy is to be hanged with two adults. Many of the Oberkapos had little boys that they liked and had hang around for sexual purposes. Someone at the camp was suspected of blowing up the electric station, and eventually they found it to be the Dutch Oberkapo, and he was arrested. This Oberkapo had a little boy (not his son), and he would not say whether or not the man had done it, so they decided to hang him. Many of the men are thoroughly disturbed by the fact that the boy being hanged was so young. Many of the young boys grew meaner than some adults, but the Dutchman s little servant was loved by all. He had the face of a sad angel (60). The Lagerkapo who is supposed to do the hanging refuses, and SS officers have to step in and perform the execution. This Lagerkapo shows an existentialist decision because he takes control of his own life. He does not want his life to include the hanging of a small boy. According to Dictionary.com Romantic Comedy is defined as, a movie or play that deals with love in a light, humorous way. For all romantic comedies to make this happen, they follow three simple rules. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. As Brian Finnigan from The Five Golden Rules of Romantic Comedy says, Different but the same, He wants She Wants, turmoil, and learning curves . The most used Romantic comedy style today is Modern American Romantic Comedy. The woman is portrayed to be equal to the man. A great example that really changed the way romantic comedy was viewed was When Harry Met Sally. Women gave their point of view on relationships and could express equality with men. These dimensions of culture were created to view how values in the workplace were influence by a particular culture of a given country. Essentially, it was a tool to describe how workforces in different countries operate under their own culture. There are currently six different dimensions of national cultures; power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity, long term orientation, and indulgence versus restraint. Professor Greet Hofstede was the creator of the first four cultural dimensions, back in 1973. Roughly two decades later, Michael Bond with the support of Hofstede created the fifth dimension, in 1991. Recently in the 2010, the last dimension was added to the list, by Michael Minkov and his research team (Minkoy Hofstede, 2011). The first four dimensions discovered by Hofstede, dealt with four different anthropological issues that were handled differently from nation to nation. These issues involved; methods of coping with inequality and uncertainty, relationships within a primary group, and the emotional significance of having been born as male or female (National, n.d.). The fifth dimension is long term orientation. Some cultures view obesity as necessary and attractive while others are taking drastic measures in an attempt to promote a healthy lifestyle. Although some of these drastic changes seem a bit invasive and controversial, policy makers are debating whether it is effective and even whether or not such a policy should be adopted in the United States. According to the article written by Gallagher, a culture sensitive approach should be implemented in order to tackle the issue of global obesity. A study of children of Mexican descent showed that about 32.6% of Mexican children occupying the U.S. are overweight and about 19.2% are obese (Gallagher 2010). The parents observed in this study were serving their children unhealthy foods, such as those from cans and fast food restaurants, due to price and convenience (Gallagher 2010). Cultural beliefs regarding obesity also include perspectives on body size and whether or not obesity is a disease, an illness or just an issue created by Western influences (Brewis, 2011). Although paralysis seems to be the main theme in Dubliners, another motif comes across in the pages of the stories. There were many different body shapes of woman from the Paleolithic period, but there is only one that really stood out and served as a role model for their village. Venus of Willendorf is sculpted in a way that clearly shows her obesity and why she is the role model for the Paleolithic period. She was sculpted with a large stomach that overhangs a fat roll that extends around the middle, a flat butt and large thighs that are pressed together on her knees. This is one of the earliest signs of obesity in women and they still struggle with this in the modern society. In today s society everyone has imagined to have that perfect body. Many experts have suggested that Barbie is a root cause for many problems with women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Assess the Changing Methods and Contributions of... Over the past centuries, since its discovery in 1749, many archaeologists have contributed to our understanding of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Archaeologists were initially focused on excavating, most of which were improperly done causing extensive damage. It wasn t until the 19th century, when archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli introduced new excavation methods; those succeeded him include August Mau, Vittorio Spinazzola and Amendo Maiuri. Now attention has shifted towards conservations and restorations which are reflected in the works of Fausto Zevi and Pier Guzzo. His work enables us to learn about the streetscapes of Pompeii. Amendo Maiuri grand vision was to reconstruct the entire site to its original appearance. He excavated right around the walls of Pompeii, uncovering the cemetery as well as significant buildings eg. insulaes along the via dell Abbondanza, the amphitheatre and the palaestra. Maiuri used mechanical equipment to clear away debris from earlier excavations and to assist in areas that previously had been considered too hard to excavate. As part of conservation, Maiuri restored the walls and ceilings and erected roofs for protection. However, he was criticized for excavations that were done too quickly with little documentation. Some excavated buildings were unprotected and wall paintings faded without ever being recorded. However, Maiuri s great enthusiasm for the site and the important buildings he uncovered, attracted many tourists and made Pompeii well known internationally. Following 1977, Fausto Zevi halted excavations and started focusing on conservations instead as both Pompeii and Herculaneum were dying a second death due to improper excavations exposure to natural elements. Zevi recorded the uncovered buildings and took many photographs, resulting in over 1800 photos. In 1995, Pier Guzzo oversaw many restoration developments. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How to Compete on Analytics Essay How to Compete on Analytics Thomas Davenport describes the prerequisites and the five stages of analytic competitiveness By Alison Bolen Thomas Davenport s article Competing on Analytics was the best‐selling Harvard Business Review reprint in 2006. To write it, Davenport,The President s Distinguished Professor in Management and Information Technology at Babson College, studied the characteristics of more than 50 leading organizations that have made a commitment to quantitative, fact‐based analysis. I don t think that s a coincidence. What needs to be done before a company can begin to compete on analytics? DAVENPORT: There are two major prerequisites. One is human, and the other is technical. The human prerequisite is that you need to have leaders who appreciate and understand what it means to compete on analytics, and want to do it. Second, having high‐quality, integrated, clean data is something of a prerequisite. One of the reasons that companies are interested in this right now is because they finally have access to all this data from ERP systems, Web reports, point‐of‐sale systems and so on. Today the tools that SAS and others provide for integrating and cleaning data are better than ever before. From there, what are the stages of competing on analytics? DAVENPORT: I call stage one analytically impaired, which means some fatal flaw is keeping the company from doing much with analytics at all. Either the executives just don t care or they have bad transaction data or they have lots and lots of data silos around the organization ‐ something major keeping them from doing this at all. Stage two is what we used to think of as a best practice in business intelligence, which is a lot of little pockets of analytical activity around the organization ‐ not connected, no vision of what you could do with it at all. Cinderella In Charles Perrault s Cinderella Frozen In Time Cinderella Frozen in Time: Why Cinderella continues be portrayed as a victim in the era of feminism Cinderella has changed so little over time that it seems we re still in the 1700 s reading Charles Perrault s first edition. And yet it remains one of the most popular fairy tales read to Joshi 8 children. The role of women continues to be either the cruel, evil one or the good, docile one while the prince continues to be the saving grace of the helpless girl. The skeleton hasn t changed much as well. A damsel in distress, saved by a knight in shining armor, who falls in love with her and they live happily ever after. Does this sound familiar? This sentence might as well be a fairy tale. We ve seen this over and over in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. I chose Cendrillon or the Little Glass Slippers by Charles Perrault as my fairy tale. I grew up reading the Disney story book, inspired by Perrault s version. I can still imagine the animated faces even though it s been years since I ve read that book. My tale is a modern adaptation of Cendrillon, where the character is not weak willed or naive. The main focus is on justice and on her relationship with her step siblings and her Prince which is much more than superficial attraction. In Perrault s version, Cinderella s father remarries after the death of her mother. Her step mother s cruel treatment and aggravation is due to her own daughters unpleasant deposition when compared to Cinderella s good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Winter Symbolism In Literature Essay When you think of winter what do you usually think about? I think about the freezing temperatures, the ice, and the snow. However, in literature winter can be symbolic of many things. The dark, sadness, old age, and death are just some of the things winter can symbolize in literature. The songs California dreamin by the Mamas and Papas and A hazy shade of winter by Simon and Garfunkel are both about winter but mean very different things. Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor will also be referenced in order to help show the meanings of these pieces. California dreaming is a very simple and straightforward song;. It has three short verses and a chorus that repeats a couple of times. California dreamin on such a winter s day is repeated throughout the song. This is the main essence of the song. The narrator is telling us that he likes the warm and sunny days of California more than the cold harsh winter. Throughout this song we learn of other things that the narrator dislikes which are gray skies and brown leaves. These signify the arrival of winter which saddens the narrator. There s also a deeper meaning that can be figured out with the help of Foster s work. In his book he tells us that the cold often can symbolize sadness and that warm often symbolizes happiness. One of the many possible meanings that the mamas and papas could be trying to convey is that it isn t easy to be happy. In the song the narrator arrives at a church and is going to stay. Even though he isn t very happy he would rather be in the church than in the cold as shown in the next verse where he starts to complain about the cold again. We can learn from this message to be thankful for what we have even though it isn t what we want because it could always be worse. In A Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon and Garfunkel the narrator sends a clear message that he does not like the arrival of winter. When you hear the song you can tell how much he doesn t like the winter anytime anything related to it is said. His voice becomes low, dull and lifeless. The way he sings tries to makes you associate sadness with the winter. To the narrator the winter may be sad because it is cold but if we look deeper into the song we ... Don Quixote De La Mancha The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha Essay Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra s The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha is a story that includes many tales of a man obsessed with chivalry, Don Quixote, and his squire, Sancho Panza. These tales contain various important themes, one including male and female relations. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza encountered male and female relations of all types promiscuous, ideal, young, and old and from all of these types of relations that the two men encountered, the reader learned a lot about male and female relations, which developed this theme into a significant one throughout the book. For example, in one part of the story a man, Grisistomo, died for a woman, Marcela, because of her rejection after he declared to love her: (Grisistomo) followed her example by becoming shepherds, each hoping that in this manner he might be able to win her... the funeral ceremony is to be a most unusual one, and people from far and wide are coming to witness it. (Cervantes 139). Unlike an ideal relationship as stated previously, Cervantes portrayed young lovers as turbulent and immature. Grisistomo just wanted to be with Marcela, but Marcela was too cruel to even realize that Grisistomo loved her. Cervantes emphasized this cruelty through somber diction with words such as funeral, and hoping, because even though Grisistomo loved Marcela, she was far too cruel to realize that he loved her. One other situation of young love in the story was with Dona Rodriguez and the squire. Dona Rodriguez married the squire, but one day he died: she had unjustly dismissed the squire and it was grief over this that brought on his death. (Cervantes 619). Dona Rodriguez was immature and young, so she dismissed the squire, which brought upon grief. Later, Rodriguez had to raise an infant child alone. Cervantes specifically used the word grief, in this statement to emphasize that grief that Rodriguez would later feel. The use of this word was an example of disappointing diction. Dona Rodriguez s relationship with the squire showed that young lovers tend to have turbulent affairs, which later lead to tragic conclusions, such as the death of the squire or the death of Grisistomo with Marcela. Cervantes taught the reader that young lovers are obviously inexperienced and their inexperience tends to lead to tragedy in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is interesting to note the author use of minor characters as useful wires to weave the plot of a play. However, reading the set and the characters through a symbolic lens, the castle, the tower and the guards allude to the confinement, I would dare to say, to the burial of the consciousness of an ego overthrown by material power. King Claudius himself embodies the thirst for power that blurs the mind and takes over even on the blood ties. (Coleman, 2013) In the United States, a debate continues about how to address the issues of the education system. Some conservatives think that it is beneficial to take money away from public schools and provide students with private school vouchers so they can choose between private and public schools. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Public schools are primarily supported by taxpayers. However, when a public school loses a student to a voucher program, it loses thousands of dollars that help pay for teachers and classroom costs. In this way, school vouchers take money away from public schools in order to help students compensate for the immense cost of private schools. Consequently, public schools suffer and are not able to provide quality services for their students. Furthermore, school vouchers usually only cover the amount that a typical public school would receive per student. This comes out to around $10,000 to $12,000 per student. However, this amount is not enough to cover the tuition of most private schools. Many families feel stuck between paying for the rest of the private school tuition and sending their children to a struggling public school that is now even worse off because funding is being syphoned off for vouchers. For this reason, the choice that school vouchers give low income families is only putting them at a disadvantage. Due to the high cost of private schooling, one would think that student achievement would increase in this setting, however, this is not the case. An article from Brookings.edu states claims ...
