GROUP COHESIVENESS
AND GROUP DYNAMICS
INTRODUCTION
Not every mass of people can be called a group.
Every group is distinguished by certain features
which are called group properties.
• Roles
• Norms
• Status
• Size
• Cohesiveness.

DEFINITION
• Cohesiveness is the degree to which group
members are attracted to each other and are
motivated to stay in the group.
• It is the level of unity or closeness among
members in a group.

FACTORS AFFECTING COHESIVENESS
• Formation process and goals (interest)
• Size
• Attitudes and values of members
• Time spend together
• Level of interdependency
• Success and shared goals
• Flexibility of membership
• Member turnover and absenteeism.

BENEFITS OF COHESIVENESS
• Cohesiveness lead to productivity

Group cohesiveness &
Group dynamics -
VINCENT
FLIP SIDE OF COHESIVENESS
• Social loafing: people turn to hide under the
names groups to perform less.
• Tendency for mass poor performance
• Mass crime
• Uncontrolled behavior.

GROUP DYNAMICS
• Group dynamics is the study of groups and
group processes
• “Field of inquiry dedicated to advancing
knowledge about the nature of groups, the laws
of their development, and their interrelations
with individuals, other groups, and larger
institutions” Cartwright and Zander
• The scientific study of groups; also the actions,
processes, and changes that occur in social
groups

CONCEPT OF GROUP DYNAMICS
• Group decision; how decision are made
• Group productivity; how group perform
• Group interaction; the corporation
• Group cohesiveness ; unity and closeness
• Group communication;

PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES OF DYNAMICS
What is the group’s goal
What are the patterns of communication in the group?
What determines how influential each member is?
What method of decision making is used and how effective is it?
Why do/why don’t members challenge each other?
What and how do conflicts arise and how are they managed?
What actions by the group members help/hurt the group effectiveness?

CONCLUSION
• Group is not about masses is about the level of
unity , closeness among members and ability of
members to adapt to group changes.
