COGNITIVE EVALUATION
THEORY
Jitin Kollamkudy
1
This theory suggests that there are actually two
motivation systems: intrinsic and extrinsic that
correspond to two kinds of motivators
 Intrinsic motivators
 Extrinsic
2
 Intrinsic motivators: Achievement, responsibility
and competence. Motivators that come from the
actual performance of the task or job -the intrinsic
interest of the work.
 Extrinsic motivators: pay, promotion, feedback,
working conditions , controlled by others.
3
 Cognitive Evaluation Theory is designed to explain
the effects of external consequences on internal
motivation.
 CET Theory states that when extrinsic rewards are
used by organizations as payoffs for superior
performance, the intrinsic rewards which are derived
from individuals doing what they like are reduced.
4
 Allocating extrinsic rewards for behavior that
had been previously intrinsically rewarded
tends to decrease the overall level of
motivation.
5
 Intrinsically motivated individuals perform for
their own achievement and satisfaction. If they
come to believe that they are doing some job
because of the pay or the working conditions or
some other extrinsic reason, they begin to lose
motivation
6
IMPLICATIONS OF COGNITIVE
EVALUATION THEORY
The implication for CET is that the
consequences of a reward will be a decreased
level of intrinsic motivation and satisfaction
because the reward is perceived to negatively
impact the competence of the individual.
