Compare And Contrast The Melting Point Of 4-Butoxyphenyl...
The melting point that was observed for N (4 butoxyphenyl)acetamide was 109.7˚C, and is lower than
the literature value range of 131˚C. (Royal Society of Chemistry. 2018). This may be due to the
presence of water and that impurities may be still present in the product that was formed. Solid
substances that contain soluble impurities typically melts at a lower temperature than the pure
compound (Kirsop. 2017). This is because the impurity disrupts the repeating pattern of forces that
holds crystalline structure of the solid. A smaller amount of energy is required to melt the part of the
solid surrounding the impurity, which supports that the compound that was produced was an impure
compound.

SN1 reactions are dependent on the stability of the carbocations, where a tertiary carbocation is at its
most stable form, causing a fast reaction rate (Hunt. 2009). The compound that had the highest rate of
reaction of less than 1 min was 2 chloro 2 methyl propane, where benzene chloride followed (6 mins).
The benzene chloride had a faster reaction than the other haloalkanes since the carbon that was
attached to the chloride was connected to the benzene ring, in doing so quickens the reaction. Unlike
the benzene chloride, chlorobenzene should have no reaction since the chlorine is directly attached to
a carbon within the benzene ring. This unexpected result of having of having the solution turn cloudy
may be due to a cross contamination of the pipettes. The allyl chloride, had a slow reaction rate of 11
mins due to the carbocation being on a secondary carbon. The precipitate will eventually fully form,
where this is the same case for the 2 chlorobutane and 1 chlorobutane as the carbocation is relatively
unstable. Thus, causing the reaction to slowly occur and why no reaction was observed during the

The Farmers Revolt Essay
DBQ 13: The Farmer s Revolt
Farmers were once known for being able to do everything themselves. They grew their own food and
sewed their own clothes. People often yearn for the old days and complain about so many people
living in cities. Many farmers had to give up their farms and move to the cities, because of something
that happened in the late nineteenth century.
High prices forced farmers to concentrate on one crop. The large scale farmers bought expensive
machines, increasing their crop yield. This caused the smaller farmers to be left behind. The small
farmers could no longer compete and were forced give up their farms and look for jobs in the cities.

In 1890 clergyman Washington Gladden wrote an article called The Embattled Farmers . In it he
blamed the ruin of the farmers on protective tariffs, trusts...speculation in farm products, over greedy
middlemen, and exorbitant transportation rates.
James Laurence Laughlin wrote an article Causes of Agricultural Unrest that was published in the
Atlantic Monthly. He wrote, the farmers, in all honesty, have attributed their misfortunes to the
constriction in prices , caused by lack of gold, not overproduction of their crops. He then went on to
explain how that could not be possible, and we simply have produced too much wheat. Poet Vachel
Lindsay wrote a poem concerning the subject, entitled, BRYAN, BRYAN, BRYAN, BRYAN: The
campaign of 1896 as viewed at the Time by a Sixteen Year Old, etc. In it he mentioned the Election at
midnight; Boy Bryan s defeat which was when the Populists lost the election. He then wrote Defeat of
the wheat; victory of the letterfiles and Defeat...[of] the blue bells of the Rockies, and the blue bonnets
of Texas, by the Pittsburgh alleys He was simply saying that the city people had defeated them and
would therefore get their way.
As the amount of crops produced increased, the prices paid for them decreased. This is shown by the
graphs, Production and Prices, 1860 1895 In 1860, only 1000 million bushels of corn was produced,
and the price per bushel was about $.65. By 1895 over 2500 million bushels

James Madison Biography
Like his close friend Thomas Jefferson, James Madison came from a prosperous family of Virginia
planters, received an excellent education, and studied law –though only informally— and quickly
found himself drawn into the debates over independence. In 1776, he became a delegate to the
revolutionary Virginia Convention, where he worked closely with Thomas Jefferson to push through
religious freedom statutes, among other liberal measures. The youngest member of the Continental
Congress, Madison was of smaller than average height for a Virginian of the period; reports have him
standing either five feet four or five feet six inches tall. His soft spoken, shy demeanor was a foil for
his brilliant persistence in advocating his political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The War of 1812 amounted to a second war of independence for the new Republic and helped to unify
the President s party. Much of the War of 1812 centered on bloody battles against the Native American
tribes, who were aided by the British. In 1814, the British took the nation s new capital, torching the
White House and other federal buildings. They were finally defeated at the epic Battle of New Orleans
by General Andrew Jackson s ragtag army, many of whom were volunteers, including free blacks and
slaves and nearly 1,000 French pirates. Although Madison escaped capture, the victories against
Tecumseh and at New Orleans revitalized the nation and earned him the esteem of his constituents.
Madison s critics, who organized the Hartford Convention to protest his policies, looked like traitors
to the victorious nation, and their anti war criticism further weakened the Federalist Party. Everyone
was shocked when the shy and reticent James Madison announced his marriage to the vivacious
Dolley Payne Todd, who became one of the most popular and vibrant first ladies ever to grace the
White House. Dolley Madison was already familiar with her role in Washington since she had
occasionally played the role of hostess during the Jefferson administration. A beautiful woman who
liked to party and to show off her impressive figure, Dolley Madison quickly earned a reputation
among conservatives and political enemies, who criticized her

Credit Derivatives in the Recent Global Financial Crisis
Credit Derivatives in the recent Global Financial Crisis 1.0 Introduction: In the recent times credit
derivatives have become a very popular financial security for investors. If we take a look at the chart
given below we can see how the popularity of credit derivatives increased in the past decade. The
maximum volume of derivatives was traded during the years 2005 to 2007 of which 2006 was the
highest at $2000bn. Then when the financial crisis occurred at the end of 2007 the trading decreased
rapidly the following two years to as low as $100bn in 2009. There has been claims from financial
critics that these credit derivative are the main factor that has lead to the almost collapse of the world
financial markets and if corrective measures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3.0 Why control measures are necessary? From the simple description of what happened during the
financial crisis as mentioned above, it is clear that the use or rather the overuse of credit derivatives
was the major cause of the collapse of the financial market. The creatively designed derivatives helped
to hedge the risks off parties involved and eventually the party held accountable for the risk would get
lost in all the complexity of each tranche. In May 2010, the Financial Times quoted Warren Buffett
with the following: Derivatives are financial weapons of mass destruction, carrying dangers that,
while now latent, are potentially lethal to the financial system (Lemer, 2010). This quote nicely
reflects the fear of some market participants and observers that credit derivatives may threaten the
stability of the financial system. The transactions of credit derivatives are not required to be disclosed
by the market participants and this opaqueness in the system can easily lead to yet another collapse in
the financial markets. Furthermore, there is no common method of documentation and thus control
measures are only self regulatory (Ayadi Behr, 2009). Sometimes government heavily subsidizes the
derivative markets making it easier for anyone to get credit derivatives cheaply. Almost one third of
OTC market trades require no margin or collateral requirements at all. Financial innovation has a bad
reputation at the moment, because exotic derivatives were one of

Origins Of The Sport And The Battle For Integration Essay
Baseball has not always been the exciting, diverse, and traditional pastime as it is today. Before the
glory days of televised sports, was its murky past. America s pastime didn t reflect what the country
really represents at the core; a melting pot of people from different races and backgrounds. To
understand how race has had an effect on baseball, one must look at the sport s timeline. Starting from
conception to pivotal events that shaped the game today, one can really see how the balance of power
has shifted drastically in the game and has had an impact on our nation. Baseball started out as a
leisure activity and transformed into a business. The game of baseball truly had no borders. In this
paper, I will look at the origins of the sport and the battle for integration. I will also take a look at how
the minority communities were affected by the conception, involvement, and racism that surrounded
the sport.
Baseball s origins are difficult to trace. The widely accepted view that it originated in the late 1830 s
by Abner Doubleday has been totally debunked. The earliest indications of the sport were in England,
Germany, and France. Sandlot baseball dominated the middle of the 19th century until industry and
professional baseball came into its own. Although the records indicate it was more along the lines of a
form of cricket, the game, as we know it was entering its early stages. Along with the MLB, there was
the Caribbean league as well as the Negro league, and now the

Essay on The Power of Perspective
The Power of Perspective
All I needed was a bow tie. Everything else was packed, and I was ready for the weekend, except that
I needed a new bow tie. I assumed that some store on Boston s posh Newbury St. would have one, and
sure enough I found a store that sold tuxedos and wedding dresses. Upon entering the store, I noticed
soothing classical music playing in the background as the few patrons meandered through the
thoughtfully arranged display room. The sole operator of the store was busy with a customer, so I
waited for some assistance. Being a scruffy college student, I apparently didn t invoke any sense of
urgency in the store clerk. After a few minutes, he asked me if I needed any assistance in a tone that ...

I always try to imagine a situation from different perspectives. When observing someone s actions, I
try to understand the overall situation until I can say to myself I see where they re coming from. In
order to do that you need to have some background information on that person. In most cases this
involves making some intuitive assumptions, but you must be careful, as wrong assumptions can make
a situation worse. With some background information and careful assumptions you can try to put
yourself in their shoes as the saying goes, and then judge people by their actions. I m not saying this
would be a functional design for a court of law, but this is how I deal with small social problems.
For the most part I believe that this is an effective method for dealing with small conflicts because
usually I can understand a person s motives, and that is a step towards finding a solution. With small
conflicts it s usually a matter of conflicting personalities. These problems tend to be harder to solve
than similar problems generated from conflicting interests, as people with conflicting personalities
will do things just in spite of the other person. Such actions tend to create a perpetual problem.
I like my ability to see the other side of a situation, but only for small, insignificant problems. When I
look at larger social issues, a sense of hopeless pessimism spreads through me.

What Are The Stereotypes Of Media Bias
Today s media likes to give the appearance of honesty and truth, but it is really still just biased
propaganda paid for by the bigger powers that control the news we know today. Many People are
easily swayed by big news companies because they think they can trust them, when in reality they are
just taking advantage of people. A story I found from CNN talked about How a North Korean missile
test earned Kim Jong Un s praise (K.J. Kwon, CNN). This shows that a lot of the stories that media
covers seem to be pretty underwhelming, but they use cliffhangers and over hype the story that is,
Coming up next! , to make a pretty simple story seem impactful. The media over exaggerates events
constantly, making a incredibly small and meaningless story into a devastating monster of a news
report. A lot of the news is meant to sway your thoughts about an event or even a person. Sometimes
you never even notice that you are being sculpted into thinking a certain way. All of these news
providers have been around for years and years so they have perfected the art of manipulating its
viewers into thinking exactly what they want them to think. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Analysis Of In Praise Of The Urban Sandbox
In the article In Praise of the Urban Sandbox, Ferzoco (2011) explored simulation games like Sim City
and considered the eventual possibility of these games being used in more meaningful ways. Through
the article, the author focused on many meaningful points about gaming that did not simply highlight
the game s use as entertainment, but also went beyond these elements to explore these simulations
unique features and future potentials. Although Ferzoco s article was very impressive in exploring
these things, there were many points that he did not analyze in great enough depth or did not consider
at all. One of the interesting things that the author synthesized in writing this piece was in relation to
his own approach to the games. He indicated, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be much easier for game designers to develop true to life depictions of New York City streets
and work hand in hand with city officials to identify logistical challenges that the city is currently or
may face in the future. These games would then be a way for the game designers to collectively pool
the creative thinking of the thousands of people who play these games to address these pressing
infrastructure challenges. Ferzoco (2011) indicated that, Many of today s simulations are directly
inspired by the interactivity of mass market games (p. 11). Such a point would seem to mean that
although the potential exists for game designers to create more realistic simulations, since the current
types of games produced are based on what is popular in the gaming environment, that is what gamers
will tend to produce in the future. Even of this insight is true, this should not stop organizations and
designers from taking the time and effort to explore more socially responsible gaming

Parole Is The Release Of A Convicted Offender
Parole is the release of a convicted offender after he or she has completed a portion of his or her prison
sentence (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). Probation is a form of sentence for violating the law, which
suspends the convicted offender s sentence for a period of time and releases the offender back into the
community under specific conditions (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012).
The start of probation can be linked to England s criminal law. During Henry VIII s time, harsh
sanctions were placed on adults and children for violations of the law that were sometimes minor
(New York City Government, 2015). The upper class members of the society eventually became
dissatisfied with the harsh punishments and became bothered with the change of the ... Show more

Before the mid nineteenth century offenders received determinate sentences in prison (Rank, n.d.).
Determinate sentence is a non negotiable sentence of incarceration for the specific amount of time as
required by statute for that specific crime (U.S. Legal, 2015). Determinate sentencing became
problematic because prisons were often overcrowded, which forced governors to issue pardons or
prison wardens had to randomly release inmates to make room for new intake (Rank, n.d.).
Captain Alexander Maconochie and Sir Walter Crofton are credited for implementing early parole
system in England (Rank, n.d.). Maconochie was governor of an English penal colony at Norfolk
Island (Rank, n.d.). Convicted English offenders were transported to Australia from England and from
Australia to the island; unfortunately, the conditions were extremely bad for the offenders (Rank, n.d.).
Maconochie discontinued determinate sentencing and created a mark system (Rank, n.d.). Under the
mark system , inmates could be granted release from prison based upon their hard work and good
behavior (Rank, n.d.). Inmates earned marks, which were used to buy a reduction in sentence or
goods; unfortunately, inmates had to undergo a variety of stages before they were released and the
climbing through the stages depended on the number of marks received (Rank, n.d.).
Similar to Maconochie, Sir Walter Crofton was convinced that the prison sentence should not

The Effects Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation And...
Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation and Student Achievement
Rosa Elena Garza

Abstract
To examine the effects of rewards on intrinsic motivation for children in special education, a review of
research was conducted. Students who are intrinsically motivated, tend to experience school success
because they select challenging activities and spend more time on the task at hand. It can be very easy
to undermine intrinsic motivation by using rewards. This change in motivation then results in more
errors in the learning process as well as slower acquisition of skills.
Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation and Student Achievement
Students with learning disabilities are often extremely unmotivated. To them, school tends to be one
failure after another. This poor student achievement is usually due to an extreme lack of motivation. In
attempts to overcome this lack of motivation, rewards are offered. Many of us have heard, If only they
were more motivated, they would do so much better on test and get better grades when having
conversations about these individuals. The effect that is intended for the reward is often mistaken and
therefore it can have the opposite effect of what was originally intended. Children who lack intrinsic
motivation will get the wrong idea from receiving rewards. Sometimes when rewards are used, the
student will find ways to excel in the task more so then when the reward is not in place (Amabile and
Gitmore, 1984). Students with

Like Water For Chocolate By John Brown Seduction Essay
My grandmother had a very interesting theory; she said that each of us is born with a box of matches
inside us but we can t strike them by ourselves; just as in the experiment, we need oxygen and a
candle to help. Dr. John Brown, Ch.6 Pg 115 Within chapter six of Like Water for Chocolate, Dr. John
Brown had declared this quotation to Tita whilst performing a lab experiment in front of her. At first, I
began to think that there is a sense of seduction behind Dr. Brown s statement. This can be backed up
because Dr. Brown does develop admiration when looked at Tita in chapter 4 of page 74. Or in other
words, he does acquire love feelings for Tita when he heard that she delivered Rosaura s baby by
herself without no experience needed. Dr. Brown also hadn t felt any sort of sensation for a women
ever since his wife died five years prior. Initially, that s what I thought Dr. Brown s motive was.

Many of the struggles include the send off of Pedro, Rosaura and Roberto to San Antonio, Roberto s
death and the continuous arguing moments between Mama Elena and herself. This long theory, which
began at this quote, had deep connection to what Tita s impulses were like throughout the April, May
and June chapters. Like for example, the birth of Roberto ignited Tita to have a new, fond connections
with Pedro and Rosaura. This mimics the explosion that is generated from oxygen and the candle.
Without that event from happening, then Tita wouldn t have felt as positive as she ended up being in
the April chapter. With that said, Dr. Brown s ultimate motive towards this quotation attempts to direct
Tita into a more positive direction of her life, which does get her thinking a

Evaluating the Limitations of Post-Traumatic Amnesia Essay
Evaluating the Limitations of Post traumatic Amnesia as a Severity Scale Traumatic brain injuries
(TBI) account to a third (30.5%) of all injury related deaths in the U.S. with an estimated 1.7 million
individuals sustaining TBI each year (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010).
Classifications of brain injury (e.g., mild, moderate and severe) is mostly done using the Glasgow
coma scale (GCS) which has gained broad acceptance for the assessment of the severity of brain
damage (Bauer Fritz, 2004). Recent studies suggest that almost all patients with moderate or severe
TBI have a period of recovery during which they are responsive but confused. This state is commonly
referred to as the post traumatic amnesia. Post traumatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, they also assess the magnitude of the brain injury through magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI; Wilson et al., 1993). The data in this study support earlier research connoting that patients have
short coma but report prolonged PTA. They found that patients showed substantially more extensive
hemispheric damage when patients with perpetuated PTA ( 7 days) and short coma ( 6 hours) when
compared in the acute stage of MRI. Researchers conclude that although both coma and PTA are
related to brain damage they still reflect disparate patterns of lesions. Thus, PTA assessment remains
as a valuable measure by providing additional information concerning the severity of injury (Wilson et
al., 1993). The duration of PTA is retrospectively measured by most studies at interview by
catechizing the patient about their memories around the time of injury (Greenwood, 1997). Critics
pose significant concerns regarding the retrospective method due to the lack of standardized protocol,
undocumented prospective measurement of episodic memory, and questionable reliability issues
(McMillan, Jongen, Greenwood, 1996; Tate et al., 2000). One of the issues is that clinicians often rely
on the patient s own judgment and the relatives memory for events. Many find this problematic due to
the potential contingency of confabulations right after traumatic injury (McMillan et al., 2012). In
addition, concerns were

Throughout our world s history we have seen many grievous instances where discrimination caused
severely negative repercussions on how our society functions. The inequity demonstrated by our
nation in the past has estranged its residents based on their religion, the color of their skin, their
beliefs, and even their gender. With time, our community has become more accepting which has led to
the abolishment of most, if not all, bigotry and racist beliefs. However, there is still an issue today that
we have been facing for almost a century. This conflict has led to the prohibition of certain people
obtaining a particular job in some cases, and the penalty of being paid less than her male colleagues if
she were to obtain that job. The problem is sexism and its consequences.
The consequences of this type of discrimination lead to unequal pay for the same kind of work. The
American Association of University Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and
women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on
average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns (Coleman) . This
embodiment originates from the very popular credence that men provide for women in a family
environment and that the wives are the parent who care for the children at home, therefore making
them more unfocused in their workplace, hence the belief

used to manipulate the decision of President Truman. President Truman must have kept in mind the
personal political implications of his decision to drop the bomb. With polls showing that Americans
overwhelmingly supported the unconditional surrender of Japan and with his knowing the strong anti
Japanese sentiments of the American people, I must have felt that I had little political risk in dropping
an atomic bomb on Japan. (Harry Truman) President Truman must have also considered his difficulty
in explaining to American voters why the government spent two billion dollars to develop a superior

American casualties. Here is an entry from Truman s diary, I have to decide Japanese strategy shall we

Newfoundland Fishing Industry
The closing of the cod fisheries marked one of the most devastating moments in history for the
province of Newfoundland. However, Sue Bailey wrote an article discussing the return, the comeback
of the Newfoundland fishing industry once again. Bailey refers to a federal report stating cod stocks

fishery was thought to be gone, the recovery rate of the species are remarkable; ...total biomass was up

undiscussed matter, is climate change; over the years it has played a significant change in driving

Who Do Not Study The Past, The Great American Philosopher...
Title
Melissa Lichota
Those who do not study the past, the great American philosopher and historian George Santayana
once observed, are condemned to repeat it. (Schmidt, 1) This is not only true for the present we live in
today, but is held true for the future tomorrow. In 2010 Haiti was hit with traumatic earthquake that
has still left 150,000 people not re housed and live in tents. It was devastating because a history of
adverse social conditions and extreme ecological fragility primed Port au Prince for massive loss of
life and destruction when the ground began shaking on January 12th. (Farmer, 3) The history of Haiti
has caused the country a great struggle to rebuild after the earthquake and the 1825 settlement
between Haiti and France, the occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934, and the Duvalier dictatorships
from 1957 to 1986 events prove that history has a substantial impact upon the future after a
devastating natural disaster.
Haiti s independence created new difficulties and led to a spiral of independent debt. The prospect of
slave rebellion terrified every slave holding elite and now their own restless slaves had a bloody
example to emulate. (Phillips, 4) Other colonies relied heavily on slave labor and could not risk losing
property, which resulted in Haiti being quarantined to hide the independence. Slave plantations in
Haiti were French owned, but when the country became independent the French lost property, or
slaves, and forced

The Heroic Quest In Vogler s Fifth Business
Fifth Business is a stellar example of a novel that follows the heroic quest pattern, and is easily
examined through an archetypal lens of a hero s quest. To begin, almost every heroic story begins with
some background on the character, to help the audience understand and relate to them. I have noticed
this in all the movies I ve seen and books I ve read, if the storyline is a typical one of heroism .
Although there is a greater example of the heroic arc later on in the story, Dunstable s participation in
World War I also serves as a worthy, if short lived, instance of the heroic quest. Vogler writes that
another important step in the hero s journey to enlightenment is crossing the threshold , typically
occurring at, the end of Act One . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dunstable is faced with trials and enemies in France, having to survive and kill others, similar to how
the sixth stage of the heroic quest is described (Vogler). He is literally rewarded with the Victoria
Cross and returns with his elixir , both of which are described by Vogler as crucial stages in the Hero s
journey. Fifth Business also includes many examples of Jungian archetypes, which are also found in
typical heroic stories. Dunstable represents the archetypal self in many ways. The self does not imply
only the main character, but also all the discoveries they make towards becoming a more developed
person (Jung s). He matures as a character, becomes more in touch with his spirituality, and begins to
understand how the world works. In this way, he becomes more like himself through enlightenment.
While at home and in France, Dunstable encounters several instances of the shadow , another key
Jungian archetype. The shadow is mysterious and evil, often representing a reflection of the Hero s
self

How Did Knights Affect Feudalism
Did you know that knights didn t just fight? Vassals impacted feudalism in many ways. Feudalism was
a system in which all classes needed each other. The church was a part of feudalism and laws were
another way that knights helped with feudalism. The job of the vassal helped feudalism meet the need
of its people.
Knights had many jobs within feudalism. One of the knights jobs was to fight when it was a time of
war. Most of the knights only served in battle when they were called for war by their lord (Norman
122). If needed, all of a lord s vassals got called to war (Norman 123). The number of days they would
go out to fight varied from castle to castle (Norman 125). Knights were obligated to do other duties
besides to fight in wars. Another duty of the knights was guarding the castles of their lords (Norman
124). Knights gave protection to the manor (Hooper, Bennett 156). A piece of a knight s job was to
protect the lord s land and people (MacDonald, 2006). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Roman Empire fell, the church played a role in feudalism (Richardson). Local lords had to
take over the government since it was chaotic (Richardson). People were poor because there was no
trade, so they had to farm for themselves (Richardson). During the Middle Ages a lot of people turned
to the church for help (Richardson). The church had advantages because they could communicate
throughout all of Europe since everyone in the church spoke Latin (Richardson). The church tried to
help with the chaos in people s lives (Richardson). They did this by making the great chain of being
(Richardson). The great chain of being said that everything has its place, and that it can t be changed

you stayed (Richardson). Some classes were superior to others, but every class needed the other

Ammon Ford s Poem
Does poetry really stand a chance if you just read between the lines and not dig deeper to find the full
meaning of the poem? In Ammon Ford unzips Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening, he strives
to read between the lines however, he is set back by his lack of motivation to further develop his full
ideas of the poem itself. Frost s poem has two main symbols in which they represent society and being
on the outside of today s society this is proven by the ideas given in the poem. In the article Ford
summarizes the main ideas in Robert Frost s poem Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening. Ford
explains how there are many meanings to the poem. Throughout this poem, Ford is giving his
opinions on what he thinks about Frost s poem. Also, he explains how there could be many more
meanings beneath the surface symbols that Frost presents. Ford proves his ideas and shows what he
thinks about the symbols in the poem. In the article Ammon Ford unzips Stopping by the Woods on a
Snowy Evening, Ford realizes that there is a deeper meaning to the poem. Understanding this, Ford
realizes that the deeper meaning to the poem could mean so much more. This is enjoyable because the
deeper meanings in the poem is what Ford is trying to interpert. Ford does a good job of explaining his
deeper meanings when saying, The horse could be symbolic of some wordy resemblance or one of the
promises. Ford is further developing this symbol into another meaning. It is awesome how Ford does
not just see on the surface level and digs deeper to find the true meaning. However, on a deeper level
Ford presents ideas in his article that could mean something totally different. Although, Ford digs
deeper to further the meaning of symbolism, he also stays just right under the surface level. Despite
him digging a little deeper Ford fails to explain the real meanings of the symbols. On the other hand
Ford even says how , I personally would rather read the lines than read between them. When Ford
states this is shows that he really did not fully interpret the true meaning of the symbols in Frost s
poem. This shows that Ford would have rather just read the poem than actually digging for the true
meaning. As a result, Ford s explanations

The Regression Model Of The United States
First of all, I would like to mention that it is more reasonable to compare the models that are based on
the same data, so I tried to use the same variables and the same missing value treatment approach
(excluding decision tree) to all of the models.
All the 3 models showed a performance of nearly the same quality, according to the various lift charts
produced and presented in the further parts of the report.
However, the difference becomes more evident on the % captured response and the most efficient and
useful model turns out to be the logistic regression model.
It is described in a greater detail in part 4 of this report.
This ROC plot indicates that the logistic regression is also efficient in terms of trade off between ...

2. Recommended Model Decision Tree
The recommended decision tree model includes 2 variables : annual income and loans, both of them
are interval variables and represent the original observations. They were chosen for the final model,
because after several trials, they proved to be the key ones in determining the rules within decision
trees.
In terms of missing values, nothing particular had to be done, because decision trees conveniently
handle missing values by default.
As for the splitting criterion, after getting more knowledge about each of the criteria and performing
numerous trials , Gini was chosen, due to its ability to measure the differences between the values of a
frequency distribution.
Presented below is the model assessment graph that represents the misclassification rates at each
number of leaves.
As can be seen from the graph, the model enables to reduce the difference between the training and
actual sets compared to other situations when different settings were used and different variables
included.
Another indicator of this model s usefulness is the lift value graph. The base line represents the
nonexistence of our prediction model, while the intercept of the red line states that with this decision
tree we can identify 3,7% more bad customers than we would have done without it.

Alcoholism As A Family Disease
It is estimated that the number of adults, in the United States, who abuse alcohol or are alcohol
dependent is approximates 17.6 million, or 8.46 percent of adults (Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration, 2015). These statistics present a primary health concern (Hart Kisr, 2013).
Still yet, an additional concern is warranted because of the family influences on the development of
problems with alcohol and the risk for family members developing alcoholism and other mental or
behavioral issues (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). Evidence points to
problems with alcohol that are associated with various family factors, such as spousal and parental
use, use by children, family principles and attitudes about alcohol consumption, dynamics of family
and patterns of relationship, and interplay of alcohol with biological and genetic factors (NIAAA,
2005). Alcoholism is considered a family disease all members are affected, thus, those who are
concerned the most about the alcoholic are affected the most (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). For this
reason, Al Anon offers peer support in an environment of hope, strength and offers experience in
managing an alcoholic loved one (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). This paper presents a brief history
of the Al Anon self help recovery program for anyone affected by an alcoholic or alcohol abuser, how
the meetings are organized, and the experiential observation of two different meeting in the greater

I stopped doing track for many reasons. Track had a big input/tradition in my family.
I really loved track back in middle school. I did it every year there. When I was younger I did summer
track and did wonderful. I received so many ribbons. Once I got into high school things became harder

Understanding The Neurological Complexity Of The Human Brain
In order to better understand the neurological complexity of the human brain, it is reasonable to first
compare it to a similar organ, and according to Professor David Anderson, that is a fruit fly s brain. As
a neurological researcher at the Caltech David Anderson Lab, Professor Anderson claims that the
human brain is much more complex than thought, but with the help of fruit fly experimentation,
understanding the human brain is made simple. As guest speaker at the TED Conference, Anderson
informs his audience of a common misconception with the human brain, a misconception he intends to
disprove by using evidence from his fruit fly experimentations. David Anderson explains how fruit fly

Opening up his lecture, Professor Anderson immediately harnessed the crowds curiosity through his
questions requiring crowd participation. He first asked the crowd to raise their hand if they had any
family history of mental illnesses. Most of the attending listeners responded to his inquiry with their
hands raised high, signaling Anderson to ask his next question. Secondly, Anderson asked if anyone
could agree that fruit fly research would help further the understanding of mental illnesses and if so,
they should keep their hand raised. Naturally, in response to his second question, the audiences hands
went back down. The humorous contrast in the crowds response resulted in laughter within the
audience, which allowed Anderson to smoothly transition to his next point. He continued to use
rhetorical questioning throughout his speech as seen when he asked, Can an organism like this teach
us anything about emotion like states? Do these organisms even have emotion like states or are they
just little digital robots? (00:04:55). Comparing living fruit flies to inanimate robots is silly and not
realistic; this obvious answer made clear to his listeners that there is a high chance that fruit fly
research could benefit the understanding of the human mind. In continuation, Anderson used
comparison and contrast to help explain his research and support his claim. Anderson first compared

Essay about Analysis of quot;The Birthmark quot;
Some say that beauty is only skin deep and believe that inner beauty, is a whole lot more important.
They are a small minority. Most of us strive for perfection in appearances it may be our own personal
appearance defined by the perfect clothes and the perfect look, the perfect home we live in, or the
perfect car we absolutely must have. People today are no different today than they were in the 19th
century, and we get an in depth understanding of the obsession with being perfect in Nathaniel
Hawthorne s The Birthmark. This short story is about a devoted scientist who marries a beautiful

As he said, nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on all her productions. Georgiana was
a pretty lady; Nature has to bear a birthmark on her face in order to keep the balance, any attempt to

changed or altered, without significant consequences.
Hawthorne s sentiments are very relevant in today s world where the obsession with perfection often
back fires with unfortunate results. To get the perfect house, the perfect car, or even the perfect look
we go to extraordinary lengths. Do we ever stop to think if it is all worth it? Just for a little while
longer, we think, and then we ll have enough money to get that nose job, or be able to pay for
liposuction, or that implant that will remove Nature s imperfection and make life perfect. Just as
Aylmer said of his wife, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible
defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shock me, as being visible mark of
earthly imperfection, we harp on our imperfection in the same way, blame our parents for not getting

Angel Of Death Monologue
The humming was increasing in intensity when the first tentative wave of the fog arrived at our camp
like I imagined the Angel of Death appeared as it rolled through Egypt. Actually, it looked exactly like
what the special effects department dreamed up in the movie The Ten Commandments, a malicious
flowing black fog looking for a victim. The tip of the first wave descended on us and all the mystery
of the morning was explained in one horrifying second. Yikes! It was the Angel of Death s cousin, a
world class hatch of mosquitoes and they were hungry! Billions of the little blood suckers and they
were all headed our way! We leaped up and broke camp in record time. All thoughts of a leisurely
departure were swept away by the swirling, humming black monster rolling down on us. We hastily
crammed in the rest of our stuff, cinched up the ropes, tied them off, lifted the litter and ran! Mosquito
repellant was something else I forgot. Steve and I ran drunkenly with the litter over the uneven ground
trying to outrun the bloodsucking horde. We pushed, shoved and cursed it over the tree trunks and
rocks that blocked our way and arrived at the upper trailhead, spent. We set the hated thing down and
fell on the ground to catch our breath before tackling the last mile down and around the ski slopes on

The New Penology Summary
Introduction
The journal article The New Penology: Notes on the emerging strategy for corrections Focuses on the
current and future changes to the penal system. In 1992 Malcolm M Feeley and Jonathon simon raised
the idea of The New Penology . This covered transformations and differences between the old
penology and the new penology. In addition techniques and objectives , distinguishing features , social
bases, drugs and punishment , innovation , new functions and the underclass, were aspects that were
explored in the article. This stated , In my opinion I believe that the journal article is effective in
conveying the shifts of techniques and emerging strategies in the penal system. Furthermore, The New
Penology introduces new transformations that have produced new techniques in order to achieve its
aims. For instance the objective to reduce recidivism could gradually progress through parole and the

The Importance Of Cross Culture Communication
The importance of different languages and cross culture communication are imperative when it comes

communication is ....a continuous process by which one person may affect another through written or

The Importance Of Physical Literacy
A person s level of physical activity is directly related to their physical literacy making it an extremely
important topic. Canada s Active for Life Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model studies a
variety of factors regarding the physical activity levels of Canadians. The topics that are studied
include, the relationship between physical literacy and exercise behavior and adherence,
developmental age, sensitive periods, mental, cognitive, and emotional development, competition,
system alignment and integration, and continuous improvement. There are many other resources for
finding information regarding people s physical activity levels, including Statistics Canada; this source
has an array of figures, from the annual census, regarding the populations of specific areas. For
example, the Moncton, New Brunswick, 2016 census can be used to determine exercise behavior and
adherence among local residents by using the figures presented along with other statistics from
sources such as Weinberg and Gould s book Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Physical
literacy is defined as, the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding
to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. The International
Physical Literacy Association, May 2014 ( Physical Literacy , 2017). Another understanding of
physical literacy is, it is the cornerstone of both participation and excellence in physical activity and

Biblical View On Homosexuality And Religion
Biblical view on Homosexuality
In the bible God divinely established the institution of marriage, and this is seen in the garden of Eden
during creation. Marriage was a special gift to man from a loving God before the fall that led to evil
and pervasion entering the spiritual world of man. Marriage was designed by our creator to give
satisfaction to a person s deepest longings for intimacy, love, appreciation and care. The views of
marriage between Christians and Jews are fundamentally different and show the different ways that
they view the world in relation to how they interpret their own doctrine and how these views are
changing over time.
According to the Christian doctrine, reasons why people get married and traditional marriages are
becoming diminished at a faster rate than ever as the culture changes. This is very true for
contemporary culture, law, and society. A growing influence in secular ideologies and practice are
undermining biblical standards in family relations and sexual morality. Marital unfaithfulness, spousal
abuse, sex before marriage, cohabitation, pornography, and promiscuity; these among other liberated
lifestyles of married couples are bringing down the intuition of marriage. Moreover, alternative
sexualities like homosexuality included and other varieties of transgender identities are becoming
increasingly mainstream. In the course of years, the strict Christian community and Orthodox Judaism

A generation can be defined as the period, cohort or age of a group of people. Age is seen as the age
that the persons were when particular transitions or events in life take place. Period can be defined as
the overall experience of a person s lifetime. Lastly, cohort can be seen as the overall grouping of
people who have shared events during their formative years that more than likely contribute to like

Effects Of Physical Abuse On Children
4.1: Abuse is when a child or young person is abused or neglected when someone inflicts harm, or
fails to prevent harm. Children may be abused in a family or in an institutional or community
environment, by those known to them or rarely by a stranger. There are different types of abuse, which
are Physical, Emotional, Sexual and Neglect. Physical abuse is when an adult harms a child or young
person or does not prevent them from harm. Physical harm can also be caused when a parent creates
the symptoms of or deliberately causes ill health to a child. Examples of physical abuse are when a
parent is shaking a child which causes harm. It is when a child is being poisoned force fed or being
given alcohol or drugs. Another example would be when a child is being suffocated or drowned. It can
be when a parent/carer burns or scalds a child. And when a parent/carer hits, throws and bites a child.
Physical signs of physical abuse may include: Untreated injuries from not going to the
doctors/hospital, scalds from having hot water poured on, torn frenulum from being forced fed,
fingertip bruising from grabbing the child, Behavioural signs of physical abuse would be that they
could become withdrawn from their friends and family or they can react in an aggressive behaviour by

with excitement in my voice nonetheless. Yes I was, but you would not remember me for I was
unimportant to the night s events Sam Knight. How do you know my name? I ask suddenly wary of
our words. Like I said before I was there just unimportant and unnoticed, bring me my wallet to the

will befall you. His voice was deep and dark when he said these last words and remember Sam Knight

Charlemagne s Reign
Charlemagne s rule lasted from 768 814 AD. He was king of the Franks from 768 814, king of the
Lombards from 774 814, and Emperor of the Romans from 800 814. He expanded the Frankish
Kingdom that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. During his reign, he conquered Italy
and was crowned Imperator Augustus by Pope Leo III. He was born into a great family; both his father
and grandfather were rulers of the Franks before him. Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the
Romans in the year 800, and he proved himself as a great ruler throughout his reign. He began the
Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of art, religion, culture, and education. He saw the need to expand
education, and so throughout his life he worked hard to do so. Throughout ... Show more content on

When Pope Leo III was ambushed by a group of Roman aristocrat rivals, he summoned Charlemagne
for help, because he could no longer fend off his enemies in the city. After Charlemagne calmed
representatives from both sides and restored Leo to power, the pope wanted to show his gratitude. He
called Charlemagne to St. Peter s Cathedral in Rome on Christmas day 800. Charlemagne was
kneeling before the altar in prayer when Pope Leo III approached him from behind and placed the
imperial crown on his head. It was then that Charlemagne received the title Charles Augustus,
Emperor of the Romans. Leo placed the jeweled crown on Charlemagne s head, and from then on, he
was hailed the king. However, Charlemagne was not very much interested in Pope Leo s offering. Had
Charlemagne known what was to happen on that Christmas day, he never would have attended the
mass. Charlemagne had no intention of being absorbed into the Roman Church. It was not that he didn
t want to be Emperor of the Romans, but he just did not want to receive the title as a gift. He wanted to
achieve the role of King on his own instead of having it handed to him. However, he did accept the
crown. The bottom line is that Charlemagne did not achieve the role of Emperor of the Romans on his
own, but instead, the crown was thrust upon

India After Ww1
The question for this investigation is: How did WW1 affect India s social development with Great
Britain? India played a key part in World War One; however, their contribution to Great Britain is
severely overlooked. They began pushing towards a more self government approach and this began
impacting their relations with Britain. Expecting to be rewarded for their efforts, India assisted Britain
in the war by sending millions of volunteers to the Western Front; thus began their alliance goals with
them. Near the end of the war, they began realizing that self government they pictured wasn t going to
happen, so tensions began rising towards the Independence movement with Mahatma Gandhi and the
efforts towards Civil Disobedience. Sources in relevance were Letter from Gandhi to the Viceroy,
Lord Irwin, 2 March 1930. No. 77 and The Lord Pethick Lawrence s Britain s India Policy. There ...

Hence, the purpose of this letter was written in hopes of giving the British government an idea of the
tension India has with them since they do not approve of their constrictive efforts and lack of
acknowledgment for the war effort. It emphasizes the trend of decreased Indian involvement due to
British policy and outlines the effects this has on the people of India. This source is a valuable
example of a personal statement made by the leader of the Indian people and it introduces key
concepts as to why British rule is a curse. However, limitations to my investigation using this source
are that it may be biased since Gandhi is a Hindu reformer and this letter outlines his actions
personally not the entire nation. Another limitation is the time period in which the letter was written as
it could not meet the needs of the people and the sacrifice they made and wanting

  • 2. Compare And Contrast The Melting Point Of 4-Butoxyphenyl... The melting point that was observed for N (4 butoxyphenyl)acetamide was 109.7˚C, and is lower than the literature value range of 131˚C. (Royal Society of Chemistry. 2018). This may be due to the presence of water and that impurities may be still present in the product that was formed. Solid substances that contain soluble impurities typically melts at a lower temperature than the pure compound (Kirsop. 2017). This is because the impurity disrupts the repeating pattern of forces that holds crystalline structure of the solid. A smaller amount of energy is required to melt the part of the solid surrounding the impurity, which supports that the compound that was produced was an impure compound. To determine whether a reaction has been completed, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... SN1 reactions are dependent on the stability of the carbocations, where a tertiary carbocation is at its most stable form, causing a fast reaction rate (Hunt. 2009). The compound that had the highest rate of reaction of less than 1 min was 2 chloro 2 methyl propane, where benzene chloride followed (6 mins). The benzene chloride had a faster reaction than the other haloalkanes since the carbon that was attached to the chloride was connected to the benzene ring, in doing so quickens the reaction. Unlike the benzene chloride, chlorobenzene should have no reaction since the chlorine is directly attached to a carbon within the benzene ring. This unexpected result of having of having the solution turn cloudy may be due to a cross contamination of the pipettes. The allyl chloride, had a slow reaction rate of 11 mins due to the carbocation being on a secondary carbon. The precipitate will eventually fully form, where this is the same case for the 2 chlorobutane and 1 chlorobutane as the carbocation is relatively unstable. Thus, causing the reaction to slowly occur and why no reaction was observed during the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People often yearn for the old days and complain about so many people living in cities. Many farmers had to give up their farms and move to the cities, because of something that happened in the late nineteenth century. High prices forced farmers to concentrate on one crop. The large scale farmers bought expensive machines, increasing their crop yield. This caused the smaller farmers to be left behind. The small farmers could no longer compete and were forced give up their farms and look for jobs in the cities. The smaller farmers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1890 clergyman Washington Gladden wrote an article called The Embattled Farmers . In it he blamed the ruin of the farmers on protective tariffs, trusts...speculation in farm products, over greedy middlemen, and exorbitant transportation rates. James Laurence Laughlin wrote an article Causes of Agricultural Unrest that was published in the Atlantic Monthly. He wrote, the farmers, in all honesty, have attributed their misfortunes to the constriction in prices , caused by lack of gold, not overproduction of their crops. He then went on to explain how that could not be possible, and we simply have produced too much wheat. Poet Vachel Lindsay wrote a poem concerning the subject, entitled, BRYAN, BRYAN, BRYAN, BRYAN: The campaign of 1896 as viewed at the Time by a Sixteen Year Old, etc. In it he mentioned the Election at midnight; Boy Bryan s defeat which was when the Populists lost the election. He then wrote Defeat of the wheat; victory of the letterfiles and Defeat...[of] the blue bells of the Rockies, and the blue bonnets of Texas, by the Pittsburgh alleys He was simply saying that the city people had defeated them and would therefore get their way. As the amount of crops produced increased, the prices paid for them decreased. This is shown by the graphs, Production and Prices, 1860 1895 In 1860, only 1000 million bushels of corn was produced, and the price per bushel was about $.65. By 1895 over 2500 million bushels ... • 4. James Madison Biography Like his close friend Thomas Jefferson, James Madison came from a prosperous family of Virginia planters, received an excellent education, and studied law –though only informally— and quickly found himself drawn into the debates over independence. In 1776, he became a delegate to the revolutionary Virginia Convention, where he worked closely with Thomas Jefferson to push through religious freedom statutes, among other liberal measures. The youngest member of the Continental Congress, Madison was of smaller than average height for a Virginian of the period; reports have him standing either five feet four or five feet six inches tall. His soft spoken, shy demeanor was a foil for his brilliant persistence in advocating his political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The War of 1812 amounted to a second war of independence for the new Republic and helped to unify the President s party. Much of the War of 1812 centered on bloody battles against the Native American tribes, who were aided by the British. In 1814, the British took the nation s new capital, torching the White House and other federal buildings. They were finally defeated at the epic Battle of New Orleans by General Andrew Jackson s ragtag army, many of whom were volunteers, including free blacks and slaves and nearly 1,000 French pirates. Although Madison escaped capture, the victories against Tecumseh and at New Orleans revitalized the nation and earned him the esteem of his constituents. Madison s critics, who organized the Hartford Convention to protest his policies, looked like traitors to the victorious nation, and their anti war criticism further weakened the Federalist Party. Everyone was shocked when the shy and reticent James Madison announced his marriage to the vivacious Dolley Payne Todd, who became one of the most popular and vibrant first ladies ever to grace the White House. Dolley Madison was already familiar with her role in Washington since she had occasionally played the role of hostess during the Jefferson administration. • 5. Credit Derivatives in the Recent Global Financial Crisis Credit Derivatives in the recent Global Financial Crisis 1.0 Introduction: In the recent times credit derivatives have become a very popular financial security for investors. If we take a look at the chart given below we can see how the popularity of credit derivatives increased in the past decade. The maximum volume of derivatives was traded during the years 2005 to 2007 of which 2006 was the highest at $2000bn. Then when the financial crisis occurred at the end of 2007 the trading decreased rapidly the following two years to as low as $100bn in 2009. There has been claims from financial critics that these credit derivative are the main factor that has lead to the almost collapse of the world financial markets and if corrective measures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3.0 Why control measures are necessary? From the simple description of what happened during the financial crisis as mentioned above, it is clear that the use or rather the overuse of credit derivatives was the major cause of the collapse of the financial market. The creatively designed derivatives helped to hedge the risks off parties involved and eventually the party held accountable for the risk would get lost in all the complexity of each tranche. In May 2010, the Financial Times quoted Warren Buffett with the following: Derivatives are financial weapons of mass destruction, carrying dangers that, while now latent, are potentially lethal to the financial system (Lemer, 2010). This quote nicely reflects the fear of some market participants and observers that credit derivatives may threaten the stability of the financial system. The transactions of credit derivatives are not required to be disclosed by the market participants and this opaqueness in the system can easily lead to yet another collapse in the financial markets. Furthermore, there is no common method of documentation and thus control measures are only self regulatory (Ayadi Behr, 2009). Sometimes government heavily subsidizes the derivative markets making it easier for anyone to get credit derivatives cheaply. Almost one third of OTC market trades require no margin or collateral requirements at all. Financial innovation has a bad reputation at the moment, because exotic derivatives were one of ... • 6. Origins Of The Sport And The Battle For Integration Essay Baseball has not always been the exciting, diverse, and traditional pastime as it is today. Before the glory days of televised sports, was its murky past. America s pastime didn t reflect what the country really represents at the core; a melting pot of people from different races and backgrounds. To understand how race has had an effect on baseball, one must look at the sport s timeline. Starting from conception to pivotal events that shaped the game today, one can really see how the balance of power has shifted drastically in the game and has had an impact on our nation. Baseball started out as a leisure activity and transformed into a business. The game of baseball truly had no borders. In this paper, I will look at the origins of the sport and the battle for integration. I will also take a look at how the minority communities were affected by the conception, involvement, and racism that surrounded the sport. Baseball s origins are difficult to trace. The widely accepted view that it originated in the late 1830 s by Abner Doubleday has been totally debunked. The earliest indications of the sport were in England, Germany, and France. Sandlot baseball dominated the middle of the 19th century until industry and professional baseball came into its own. Although the records indicate it was more along the lines of a form of cricket, the game, as we know it was entering its early stages. Along with the MLB, there was the Caribbean league as well as the Negro league, and now the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I assumed that some store on Boston s posh Newbury St. would have one, and sure enough I found a store that sold tuxedos and wedding dresses. Upon entering the store, I noticed soothing classical music playing in the background as the few patrons meandered through the thoughtfully arranged display room. The sole operator of the store was busy with a customer, so I waited for some assistance. Being a scruffy college student, I apparently didn t invoke any sense of urgency in the store clerk. When observing someone s actions, I try to understand the overall situation until I can say to myself I see where they re coming from. In order to do that you need to have some background information on that person. In most cases this involves making some intuitive assumptions, but you must be careful, as wrong assumptions can make a situation worse. With some background information and careful assumptions you can try to put yourself in their shoes as the saying goes, and then judge people by their actions. I m not saying this would be a functional design for a court of law, but this is how I deal with small social problems. For the most part I believe that this is an effective method for dealing with small conflicts because usually I can understand a person s motives, and that is a step towards finding a solution. With small conflicts it s usually a matter of conflicting personalities. • 8. What Are The Stereotypes Of Media Bias Today s media likes to give the appearance of honesty and truth, but it is really still just biased propaganda paid for by the bigger powers that control the news we know today. Many People are easily swayed by big news companies because they think they can trust them, when in reality they are just taking advantage of people. A story I found from CNN talked about How a North Korean missile test earned Kim Jong Un s praise (K.J. Kwon, CNN). This shows that a lot of the stories that media covers seem to be pretty underwhelming, but they use cliffhangers and over hype the story that is, Coming up next! , to make a pretty simple story seem impactful. The media over exaggerates events constantly, making a incredibly small and meaningless story into a devastating monster of a news report. A lot of the news is meant to sway your thoughts about an event or even a person. Sometimes you never even notice that you are being sculpted into thinking a certain way. Through the article, the author focused on many meaningful points about gaming that did not simply highlight the game s use as entertainment, but also went beyond these elements to explore these simulations unique features and future potentials. Although Ferzoco s article was very impressive in exploring these things, there were many points that he did not analyze in great enough depth or did not consider at all. Before the mid nineteenth century offenders received determinate sentences in prison (Rank, n.d.). Determinate sentence is a non negotiable sentence of incarceration for the specific amount of time as required by statute for that specific crime (U.S. Legal, 2015). Determinate sentencing became problematic because prisons were often overcrowded, which forced governors to issue pardons or prison wardens had to randomly release inmates to make room for new intake (Rank, n.d.). Captain Alexander Maconochie and Sir Walter Crofton are credited for implementing early parole system in England (Rank, n.d.). Maconochie was governor of an English penal colony at Norfolk Island (Rank, n.d.). • 11. The Effects Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation And... Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation and Student Achievement Rosa Elena Garza Texas Tech University EPSY 5379 Abstract To examine the effects of rewards on intrinsic motivation for children in special education, a review of research was conducted. Students who are intrinsically motivated, tend to experience school success because they select challenging activities and spend more time on the task at hand. It can be very easy to undermine intrinsic motivation by using rewards. This change in motivation then results in more errors in the learning process as well as slower acquisition of skills. Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation and Student Achievement Students with learning disabilities are often extremely unmotivated. To them, school tends to be one failure after another. This poor student achievement is usually due to an extreme lack of motivation. In attempts to overcome this lack of motivation, rewards are offered. Many of us have heard, If only they were more motivated, they would do so much better on test and get better grades when having conversations about these individuals. The effect that is intended for the reward is often mistaken and therefore it can have the opposite effect of what was originally intended. Children who lack intrinsic motivation will get the wrong idea from receiving rewards. Sometimes when rewards are used, the student will find ways to excel in the task more so then when the reward is not in place (Amabile and Gitmore, 1984). Students with ... Dr. John Brown, Ch.6 Pg 115 Within chapter six of Like Water for Chocolate, Dr. John Brown had declared this quotation to Tita whilst performing a lab experiment in front of her. At first, I began to think that there is a sense of seduction behind Dr. Brown s statement. Or in other words, he does acquire love feelings for Tita when he heard that she delivered Rosaura s baby by herself without no experience needed. Classifications of brain injury (e.g., mild, moderate and severe) is mostly done using the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) which has gained broad acceptance for the assessment of the severity of brain damage (Bauer Fritz, 2004). The data in this study support earlier research connoting that patients have short coma but report prolonged PTA. They found that patients showed substantially more extensive hemispheric damage when patients with perpetuated PTA ( 7 days) and short coma ( 6 hours) when compared in the acute stage of MRI. Researchers conclude that although both coma and PTA are related to brain damage they still reflect disparate patterns of lesions. Thus, PTA assessment remains as a valuable measure by providing additional information concerning the severity of injury (Wilson et al., 1993). The duration of PTA is retrospectively measured by most studies at interview by catechizing the patient about their memories around the time of injury (Greenwood, 1997). Critics pose significant concerns regarding the retrospective method due to the lack of standardized protocol, undocumented prospective measurement of episodic memory, and questionable reliability issues (McMillan, Jongen, Greenwood, 1996; Tate et al., 2000). One of the issues is that clinicians often rely on the patient s own judgment and the relatives memory for events. Gender Wage Gap Lisda Lara Professor Akpo GOVT 2305 P50 August 4, 2016 Throughout our world s history we have seen many grievous instances where discrimination caused severely negative repercussions on how our society functions. The inequity demonstrated by our nation in the past has estranged its residents based on their religion, the color of their skin, their beliefs, and even their gender. With time, our community has become more accepting which has led to the abolishment of most, if not all, bigotry and racist beliefs. However, there is still an issue today that we have been facing for almost a century. This conflict has led to the prohibition of certain people obtaining a particular job in some cases, and the penalty of being paid less than her male colleagues if she were to obtain that job. The problem is sexism and its consequences. The consequences of this type of discrimination lead to unequal pay for the same kind of work. The American Association of University Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns (Coleman) . Title Melissa Lichota Those who do not study the past, the great American philosopher and historian George Santayana once observed, are condemned to repeat it. In 2010 Haiti was hit with traumatic earthquake that has still left 150,000 people not re housed and live in tents. It was devastating because a history of adverse social conditions and extreme ecological fragility primed Port au Prince for massive loss of life and destruction when the ground began shaking on January 12th. Haiti s independence created new difficulties and led to a spiral of independent debt. The prospect of slave rebellion terrified every slave holding elite and now their own restless slaves had a bloody example to emulate. Georgiana was a pretty lady; Nature has to bear a birthmark on her face in order to keep the balance, any attempt to remove it should and would result in disaster that lead us to another conclusion Nature can not be changed or altered, without significant consequences. Hawthorne s sentiments are very relevant in today s world where the obsession with perfection often back fires with unfortunate results. To get the perfect house, the perfect car, or even the perfect look we go to extraordinary lengths. Do we ever stop to think if it is all worth it? Just for a little while longer, we think, and then we ll have enough money to get that nose job, or be able to pay for liposuction, or that implant that will remove Nature s imperfection and make life perfect. Just as Aylmer said of his wife, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shock me, as being visible mark of earthly imperfection, we harp on our imperfection in the same way, blame our parents for not getting us braces at the right time, or contacts when ... Angel Of Death Monologue The humming was increasing in intensity when the first tentative wave of the fog arrived at our camp like I imagined the Angel of Death appeared as it rolled through Egypt. Actually, it looked exactly like what the special effects department dreamed up in the movie The Ten Commandments, a malicious flowing black fog looking for a victim. The tip of the first wave descended on us and all the mystery of the morning was explained in one horrifying second. Yikes! It was the Angel of Death s cousin, a world class hatch of mosquitoes and they were hungry! Billions of the little blood suckers and they were all headed our way! We leaped up and broke camp in record time. All thoughts of a leisurely departure were swept away by the swirling, humming black monster rolling down on us. We hastily crammed in the rest of our stuff, cinched up the ropes, tied them off, lifted the litter and ran! Mosquito repellant was something else I forgot. Steve and I ran drunkenly with the litter over the uneven ground trying to outrun the bloodsucking horde. We pushed, shoved and cursed it over the tree trunks and rocks that blocked our way and arrived at the upper trailhead, spent. We set the hated thing down and fell on the ground to catch our breath before tackling the last mile down and around the ski slopes on the rough service road we ... Further concepts stem for the classicist school of thought ideas like Deterrence. This is evident in modern society where prison is seen as the primary deterrent for crime. • 35. Biblical View On Homosexuality And Religion Biblical view on Homosexuality In the bible God divinely established the institution of marriage, and this is seen in the garden of Eden during creation. Marriage was a special gift to man from a loving God before the fall that led to evil and pervasion entering the spiritual world of man. Marriage was designed by our creator to give satisfaction to a person s deepest longings for intimacy, love, appreciation and care. The views of marriage between Christians and Jews are fundamentally different and show the different ways that they view the world in relation to how they interpret their own doctrine and how these views are changing over time. According to the Christian doctrine, reasons why people get married and traditional marriages are becoming diminished at a faster rate than ever as the culture changes. This is very true for contemporary culture, law, and society. A growing influence in secular ideologies and practice are undermining biblical standards in family relations and sexual morality. Marital unfaithfulness, spousal abuse, sex before marriage, cohabitation, pornography, and promiscuity; these among other liberated lifestyles of married couples are bringing down the intuition of marriage. Moreover, alternative sexualities like homosexuality included and other varieties of transgender identities are becoming increasingly mainstream. After Charlemagne calmed representatives from both sides and restored Leo to power, the pope wanted to show his gratitude. He called Charlemagne to St. Peter s Cathedral in Rome on Christmas day 800. Charlemagne was kneeling before the altar in prayer when Pope Leo III approached him from behind and placed the imperial crown on his head. It was then that Charlemagne received the title Charles Augustus, Emperor of the Romans. Leo placed the jeweled crown on Charlemagne s head, and from then on, he was hailed the king. India played a key part in World War One; however, their contribution to Great Britain is severely overlooked.
