The Theme Of Love In The Screwtape Letters
In The Screwtape Letters, the topic of love appears continuously throughout the text. In different
ways, it is seen that the theme of love is used. Love is commonly understood as a deep feeling for
another but C.S describes God s love as so much more. God s love is unchanging and no matter what
wrong is committed, he will continue to love. Whether it is seen in the patients love of Christ, his love
of his mother, or his love for his romantic partner, they all point to one prominent thing, God.
Screwtape and Wormwood continuously fight throughout the book to strip the patient of the things
that he loves in his life to ultimately lead him away from the true source of love, which they call the
enemy, Christ. C.S Lewis is clear that his opinion is that the all types of love are branched from the
love of Christ. Screwtape and Wormwood devise a plan to strip the patient of his love for people and
things of this world in order to turn him away from Christ and hand him over to the devil. God s love
for humanity is incomprehensible to Screwtape, he thinks that the purpose of life is to better oneself
and take control of others. In the book, Screwtape explains how they merely want to absorb the patient
for their own personal gain and their desires are compared to God s saying One must face the fact that
all the talk about His love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly
believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth (Lewis Part VIII). C.S Lewis describes God as one
who does not want to take over and destroy but as a God who wants to give, unite and love his people.
Throughout the book, we see Screwtape s attempts to rid the patient of love but this job is not as easy
as he originally believes it to be.
Love is a very impactful thing. The fact that the Patient has great love for his mother stands out as a
problem for Wormwood and Screwtape. These two accomplices believe that if they strip the patient of
all sources of love that he will turn away from God. Wormwood is provided with a list filled with
details on how he can turn the patient s love into anger and annoyance towards his mother. One way
that they attempt to do this is by distorting the patient s prayers into prayers

Similarities Between Ancient Rome And Modern Usa
People can be naive or tentative, something can be obvious, and you can have an agenda. These words
are Latin words used in English today in the United States. The people of Ancient Rome spoke Latin.
The modern United States has other similarities to Ancient Rome other than language. Since the
modern U.S. and Ancient Rome have many similarities and differences, the lessons from Ancient
Rome could help the U.S. to avoid the fall and collapse the Rome experienced. There are many
similarities between the Modern U.S. and Ancient Rome. Ancient Rome spread their rule across the

to avoid the same fall as Ancient Rome is to avoid deficit spending. This was one of the main reasons
why Ancient Rome fell. Currently, the United States debt is more than 21 trillion dollars. Learning
from Ancient Rome, the United States should try to reduce their debt. During Ancient Rome, the

Introduction Of The Policy Report Essay
Brief Introduction of the Policy Report
I am a translator who graduated from Capital TongWen Hall (京师同文馆)and who wrote this
policy report to Qing Government in the year of 1905, when Yuan Shi Kai (袁世凯) and Zhang Zhi
Dong (张之洞) reported to the government to eliminate the Civil Examination. The reason I am
writing this policy report is because I see it is necessary to still keep the exam system, but we surely
need to change the exam system if we do not eliminate it. The old goal of the Civil Examination is to
pick elites from population to work as government official and have a powerful impact on China s
social mobility, and the new goal of it will be accommodating science without eliminating the Civil
Service Examination. However, I am writing to advise and report to try our best to keep both goals in
the exam system. I will talk about the details of why we should not eliminate the exam system, why
we need to change the system and what we are going to change in the system and how we are going to
implement these changes into the system and try to minimize the contradiction between the old
literature elites and new scientific elites. Background
The function of Civil Service Examination is for recruitment and admission to the civil service, and
for the Ancient Chinese government it mainly functioned as a tool to pick literature elites who are
capable to work for the country. It broke the tradition of genealogical monopoly in using people in the
government and it certainly

Ut Austin s Office Of Admissions
UT Austin s Office of Admissions Personal Connections as a Consultant I selected UT Austin s Office
of Admissions for my consultancy project due to the unique opportunity to give back in a way I
thought would be helpful. I also hoped to utilize what I learned to increase my understanding of its
challenges. My career in higher education began with UT Austin s Office of Admissions in 2006. After
six years, I requested a role with greater responsibility, believing I needed more space to grow than the
organization would allow at the time. In 2013, Dr. Ishop, vice provost and director of admissions

Admitted students with high need and lower probability of four year completion, were de incentivized
from matriculation by way of inadequate funding to support their enrollment. Students most impacted
by these changes in policy and practice were disproportionately from underrepresented backgrounds
and under resourced secondary schools, creating conflict between admissions practices that focused on
crafting a diverse freshmen class and greater institutional emphasis on four year completion.
Though I remained closely connected to the Office of Admissions during my time in CNS, I observed,
as in outsider, significant staffing changes, compromised staff morale, and increased skepticism the
institution held for admissions and recruitment staff. In addition, recruitment efforts were often
berated publicly as the cause for matriculation declines by ethnicity, major, or caliber. More than 15
admissions officers, the majority from the recruitment division, resigned due to dissatisfaction and/or
lack of confidence in changes in leadership and direction of the institution many of these positions
were not replaced. Due to changes in leadership in both admissions and CNS, my position is returning
to the Office of Admissions in June 2016. Given the state of the organization, I sought to address the
following questions:

The Failure Of Adolf Hitler
Most people have had many different checkereds throughout their life, some may have more successes
and or failures than others but either way, not many people have had such a great amount of success as
well as failures as Adolf Hitler. Throughout the course of his life he accomplished many things and
got away with many of them that some would never think one could, as well as failures that can get so
gruesome that thousands and or millions of people get killed. Over the course of his leadership Hitler
had a very significant leadership over Germany, he used his leadership for world superiority and to
take over Germany over the time of his ruling/power he had over Germany. Overall Adolf Hitler was a
bad man and did many terrible things over the many years that he was in power. Background history
Background history about that leads up to his leadership. Hitler grew up in a house of 7 siblings that
all died at a young age including his parents by the time he was 19 he had lost both of his parents, he
had a overall normal childhood other than his dad which disciplined him very much which overall
damaged him to becoming a well, good hearted child. Growing up hitler wanted to become a artist for
a living. When he became old enough Hitler produced his dream and took an exam to the Vienna
Academy of Arts. This was a Jewish academy and because he got declined, he started to hate jews.
After he got declined he felt he had nothing going for him, he then became emotionally crushed

Anubis In Ancient Egypt
In very ancient Egyptian history, Anubis was once called Duat and was the supreme ruler of the
underworld, until the myths of Osiris, the weird green dude, came by and stole that from him. Kind ve
unfair, since this pickle guy just straight up stole Anubis s place as ruler.
Anubis was reassigned to God of Embalming , which is just depressing. In ancient Egypt, Anubis is
being represented by priests wearing masks of jackals, as a tribute to Anubis while mummifying
corpses. And, this leads me to another fact about Anubis, his jackal head. The reason this exists is
because jackals were commonly found in cemeteries, and the people of ancient Egypt thought they
were protecting the dead bodies, so, as time went on (only like 9 years lets just

Great Craft In The Great Gatsby
Gatsby? demanded Daisy. What Gatsby? (11). F. Scott Fitzgerald created The Great Gatsby with great
craft. The reader understands the story through Nick s eyes. Nick encounters many parties, family
gatherings, and a funeral. The scenes are so in depth that the reader feels as if they are reliving the
events in Nick s life. The reader can take out characteristics, thoughts of the society, and themes in
each scene that emphasizes the the themes of the book as a whole. Tom s Character and the way
society thinks of Tom leads to the theme of once a cheater, always a cheater. Gatsby s characteristics
and the way society portrays him demonstrates the theme of gossip altering Gatsby s true qualities.
Characteristics of Tom stood out to the reader during Nick s first ever party in New York. While Nick
was spending the day with Tom, Tom picked up his mistress, Myrtle, and threw a party in their

Evidence Based Science Vs Religion
The opposite of science is commonly regarded to as religion. Scientific discoveries have been
challenging the established religions throughout history and have played a severe role in science s
influence in multiple generations. For example, during Copernicus s time, society was amidst an era of
reformation and rebellion where catholic authority was being questioned, especially with important
figures such as Martin Luther and astronomers such as Copernicus having such a power voice to
society. the famous astronomer, Galileo, was shunned by the Catholic church for endorsing the theory
that the earth revolved around the sun. Centuries later, Charles Darwin s ideas of evolution clashed
with the ideas of the majority of religious people. This lead to the ... Show more content on

Today s establishment consists of many religions, and depending on one s location in the world
depends on which religion is majority. In a country such as America, the first amendment protects the
rights for any person to practice their religion freely but this does not prevent out lash from both sides
of the arguments. In outside countries however, religion has been ruled by extremists that deny any
education that promotes non religion based science. Scientists continue to provide research, develop
new theories, and collect evidence regardless of the out lash received.
Outside of religious governmental power and laws, the closest belief based science to evidence based
science is pseudoscience. Many individuals rely on the healing power of the horoscopes and zodiac
signs for meditative and trans formative uses. Though the pseudoscience such as astrology has the title
of science , it is discouraged from being a science because of it s belief based system that relies on

Canadian Wine Industry Essay
The Canadian Wine industry is a relatively small player on the worldwide market with a wine export
value of approximately $54 million in 2013, making up just 0.15% of global wine exports. This is
largely due to Canadian grape grower s inability to compete with producers in countries with more
favourable weather conditions for growing grapes. For example, in 2007 Canada used approximately
8,000 hectares of land to grow grapes compared to the EU s 3.5 million hectares, 2.5 million of which
were in France alone. Despite Canada s land size, there are only a few regions where the climate
allows for a long enough growing season for grapes to mature on the vine.

Economies of scale are critical for low priced wine production, but not essential for premium priced
wine production, making the premium wine product segmentation a well suited niche for Canada s
wine industry. Ice Wine is produced from grapes that were left to freeze on the vine so Canada s
climate is an ideal environment for wine producers to capture the Ice Wine market. Given Canada s
susceptibility to bad weather, favourable conditions for Ice Wine grape production, and high cost/low
production winery economic model, it is no wonder that the wine industry in Canada has grown
steadily around the Ice Wine high end product segmentation international niche market. Canadian
wine exports totaled 42 million litres in 2013, valued at $54 million; of which 2.2 million litres was
premium wine, valued at $36.3 million. Despite an apparent steady growth, the industry is heavily
influenced by weather and Canada s growing season so revenue decline can be seen in years where
vineyards in Canada produced bad harvests due to weather restrictions. For example, in 2003 2005
Canada experienced severe cold weather conditions, particularly in Ontario, and grape availability was
drastically reduced as a result. This had a significant impact on the wine industry in Canada as a whole
as well as the export

Literacy Narrative
Most children are not very fond of reading books in school. I was one of those children until I read a
novel called, The Other Side of Dark written by Joan Lowery Nixon in the 4th grade. My school had
held a book fair during the week of open house. As a child, all children want the toys and games they
had at the book fair, not bothering to even glance at the books. My mother told me to look for a book
that was not only easy for me to read but something that I would enjoy. I walked around our petite
library, which was where the book fair was being held, and scanned the various novels that were
displayed until one caught my eye. I was only 10 years old looking for a book without the knowledge
of what types of literature that interested me. As I turned the corner at the end of the library I caught a
glimpse of a hardcover novel called The Other Side of Dark . On the back of novel I read the synopsis
which was about a 13 year old girl who was shot and put into coma until she was 17 years old waking
up to discovering that her family was also murdered by the same person who shot her 4 years ago. I
was quickly captivated by this summary on the back of the novel and persuaded to read further. Open
house was coming to an end and my family and I headed back to our house in La Mirada, California.
One of our homework assignments was to read at least 20 minutes a night to improve our reading
skills. We quickly arrived at our home and I

Rape In The Trojan War
In the period between April and July 1994, approximately 800,000 Rwandans were killed, and
350,000 Rwandan women were raped. In total, this number equalled about one fifth of the country s
population. An informal, political organization called akazu was at the heart of this genocide.
Members of the Hutu population, the National police, and the Rwandan army were some of the
perpetrators (Bijleveld, Morssinkhof, Smeulers, 2009). Just one year later in July 1995, during the
period of the Bosnian war, about 10,000 male Muslim Bosniaks were murdered in the town of
Srebrenica. Again, the national government was behind the killings, particularly members of the
Bosnian Serb Army of Republika Srpska (Ash, 2013). Responding to these atrocities,

The Moral Disagreement on Capital Punishment (Death Penalty)
Using Democratic Deliberation to Resolve the Moral Disagreement on Capital Punishment (Death
Penalty)
Common American experience seems to suggest that a solution to every dilemma can be found
through enough lobbying, legislating, media blitzing or politicking. We often believe that the person
arguing most eloquently, reasonably or forcefully will win every dispute, yet there are times when this
optimism fails. Despite great efforts to show the strength of a position, there are arguments that we
cannot untangle simply by proving our right and another s wrong. Some moral questions permit such
different outlooks that holders of completely opposing views can both be morally sound. Rather than

Participants in such discussion can arrive at an understanding of their differing views and gain respect
for the variation that exists, the first steps towards solving the moral questions that seem unsolvable.
To lead towards any justifiable outcome, deliberation must abide by certain guidelines of respect, open
mindedness and accommodation. At the heart of the debate must be a genuine acknowledgement that
opponents views, though disagreeing with our own, are just as morally sound. In granting this we must
also approach the discussion with a willingness to change our opinions if discussion reveals a stronger
moral position. Deliberation relies on rational participants who do not blindly cling to prior beliefs
despite evidence favoring other ones. If, however, deliberators cannot justify leaving their positions
after fair consideration, they must make concessions to the opposing side without sacrificing their own
views. By eliminating points of contention opponents can reach towards an economy of moral
disagreement. Though it will never be possible to satisfy every member of this diverse nation, appeals
to methods of deliberation offer moral justification for our decisions. A crusader for censorship, for
example, will always be upset if defeated, but he may be more satisfied knowing the rationale for his
defeat than otherwise.

Case One: The Pope, Jordan, and Religious Tourism pg. 39 For JTB the best target market would be

be not as effective as in Rome, because in Jordan there are only 4% residents with Christian religion.
In my opinion Nayef Fayez should have a wider view on world and target people places where people

For example if we take as an example Christians, from Rome, age of 60+ with income of 2000 Euro s

way to communicate with the potential costumer, and importantly how? Internet is accessed not by
everyone in this age group, they prefer to socialize and receive information by phone or from other

in some countries marketing by phone is illegal. Who are their opinion leaders? Most likely they look

Hieroglyphs In Ancient Egypt
1. Hieroglyphs were the next advancement around the year of 3300 or 3200 BCE. This advancement
came during early civilizations. Hieroglyphs were an extension to pictographs, however, letters began
to represent these symbols that were drawn on the walls. These letters were the first step in creating a
written language. Due to hieroglyphs emerging from a preliterate Egypt, Egyptian writing had a set of
some 22 hieroglyphs to represent syllables that begin with a single consonant of their language, plus a
vowel to be supplied by the native speaker. The hieroglyphic system used in ancient Egypt evolved
and had between 700 and 800 basic symbols and the number continued to grow. Hieroglyphs were
used for the next 3,500 years, all the way into Alexander the Great s time. However, as time went on,
by the 4th century few Egyptians were able to read the hieroglyphs ... Show more content on

Modern day, researchers are still trying to decipher what different hieroglyphs mean and are seen as
sacred writing. It is rather amazing the advancement we have made from the first hieroglyphics to
modern day alphabets.
1. Pictographs formed the basis for early written symbols as used by ancient Egyptian, Sumerian and
Chinese civilizations. This era was known as prehistory. These ancient civilizations used symbols
nearly 5000 years back and developed them before history was recorded. A pictogram or pictograph is
a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. Pictograph s also
represented the fine arts during this time. Pictography is a form of writing whereby ideas are
transmitted through drawing. Pictograms are still in use as the main medium of written
communication in some non literate cultures in Africa,

Impaired serotonin function has clearly demonstrated to be linked to clinical depression, because low
levels of serotonin may negatively affect mechanisms involved in maintaining recovery from
depression. However, there is evidence the serotonin pathways may not directly influence mood but
may be important mechanisms in depression due to an indirect consequence of shifts in autonomic
emotional responses, i.e., the impaired function may simply cause emotional responses to become
unstable contributing to depression. Therefore, Prozac, which acts as an inhibitor of the mechanism
that reduces serotonin, can help to reduce this emotional imbalance. However, serotonin alone is often
not sufficient in treating depression, as there are many mechanisms involved that are associated with
depression.

Foreign magazines, particularly the United States In this case seem to have more of on an impact on
Canadian culture than is probably anticipated. The number in sales indicates Canadians preference for
foreign publications and can be interpreted as a change in culture. The Less people read Canadian

is a major influence of foreign culture that undermines the identity of Canadian people.
4. Canadian government can t forcibly cause its citizens to read domestic magazines , just as much as I

Essay on Comparing My Twin Cousins
Comparing My Twin Cousins
For years I have been fascinated by that mysterious quirk of nature called twins. In my family, there
are several sets of identical twins, and I have always concentrated on their similarities. I did not realize
that identical twins also have many differences. My identical twin cousins, Sue and Heidi, appear to
be perfect mirror images. They love to dress alike. They can feel each other s pain. They sound alike
and can complete each other s sentences. But upon taking a closer look, I have found that they are as
different as day and night. Aside from Sue and Heidi s outward characteristics, they possess several
distinguishing traits that allow them to be viewed as two separate, independent ... Show more content

Her grades positively reflect her efforts.
Sue and Heidi also possess very dissimiliar personalities. Sue is a free spirit; she is wild and crazy and
thrives on adventure. One night at a football game, she was dared by some of her peers to go onto the
field and moon the opposition. Needless to say, she took the dare. She is very talkative, a real
chatterbox. Also, she is very quick tempered and impatient. For example, the slightest thing, like a
grocery store clerk s slowly checking out customers in the line she is in, will cause her to become
irrational. On the other hand, Heidi is extremely conservative. On the same occasion that Sue was
dared to moon the opposition on the football field, Heidi was given the same dare but would not even
consider taking part in such an immature prank. Heidi does not talk much; she is very shy. She is
known as the level headed and laid back twin.
Sue and Heidi s personal interests and goals further reflect their individual styles and tastes. Sue is
very creative. She is a talented, self taught artist. She can draw practically anything she has seen. Sue
is also a very good athlete. She plays tennis in her leisure time, and she is on her school s basketball
and track teams. She has great endurance. She can run miles without easily tiring and can play several
consecutive games of tennis or basketball without breaking a

Justice And Justice In Hamlet
The definition of justice can mean many distinctive things. However it can make people forgive, or get
revenge. I think it just depends on the situation. In my Final Essay, I m going to answer this question
for you, Can justice and forgiveness go hand in hand? There are numerous amounts of examples I will
show you, and one of them even includes a film called Simon Birch. Justice is what you fight and earn
properly. Revenge is naïve, and can be hurtful, if somebody hurts you, handle it maturely and
respectfully.
The well known play by Shakespeare, Hamlet; is one example of justice and forgiveness. Hamlets
uncle, Claudius kills his own brother, Hamlet Sr. He puts poison in his ear while he was dozing.
Hamlet finds out and doesn t tell anyone, everyone think he has gone mad, even his own mother,
Gertrude. Claudius marries Gertrude and becomes king. Hamlet continues to make a play about how
Claudius killed Hamlet Sr. and Claudius feels uncomfortable and leaves. During the whole play,
Hamlet tries to get revenge on Claudius in whatever possible way he can. However, Claudius
convinces everybody that Hamlet is lying about what he has been saying about him. At the end of the
play, Hamlet and Claudius duel to the death. Claudius gets wounded and Hamlet feels like he has won
and that he finally got revenge and justice for his father. So, in that story justice and forgiveness can
go hand in hand, it s all about how you handle the situation.
My second example is from a movie called

The feature in the popular game series Call of Duty black ops. Has had an increasing rate of sales in

In this paragraph I will be outlining the benefits of playing Zombies by yourself or with friends. You
can go on and try to beat the map or try to learn it and how to beat it strategically and learn about the
characters and their backstory. In addition there s a whole community out there to help you out with

People say that multiplayer is better than zombies which in my opinion is better. Because people
playing don t need story when they play it. Issac Sanchez, a student MLK, says that multiplayer is
better without no reason and he says that it s boring. But Kevin Hernandez says, a fellow zombies
player, says that zombies is more like an adventure. In the end this is why multiplayer is better than

Why People Get Religious Tattoos
Why do people get religious tattoos?
People hold different motives as they decide to get a tattoo. And I humbly think that the issue of
religious people marking their body is too personal to be confined as right or wrong. Usually the path
they choose to follow with all the principles and beliefs it disseminates regarding the tattoos is what is
determinant, but sometimes people decide to go against the will of the Believed and leave the last
word to themselves. Nevertheless, getting a tattoo is a decision that people make pondering over many
arguments.
First of all, the idea of getting a tattoo was always counterintuitive from religious perspectives as
People with paint on their body were mostly considered disreputable and evil. But those times are far
behind and today every religion stands on its own while adjudicating on a matter of tattoos. For
instance, religious tattoos are mostly associated with Christianity and it is a common thing for its
followers to get an image of a cross or Jesus inked on their body, mainly with purpose to glorify the
God and express their strong beliefs through something permanent. Other religious teachings where
tattoos are not condemned are Buddhism and Hinduism, while Islam rigidly forbids any form of

A Research Study On Sordaria Fimicola
Introduction
Sordaria fimicola is a commonly studied species of fungi from the phylum of Ascomycota, commonly
known as the sac fungi or ascomycetes. Sordaria is more specifically studied in many mycology labs
to gain a greater understanding of the exceptional formation of as many as 8 haploid ascospores.
Normally Sordaria and other fungi exists as a haploid organism, but occasionally when the mycelium
from two individuals meet, a diploid zygote is formed. The diploid cell is formed by the fusion of the
haploid wildtype and one of the haploid mutant strain. After DNA replication, we are left with two
sister chromatids connected with a centromere. During meiosis a process called synapsis occurs.
Synapsis allows matching up of two homologous pairs of chromosomes prior to their segregation, and
possible genetic recombination amongst them by breaking and then reconnecting to the other
chromosome thus allowing for crossing over to occur. The further away a gene is from the centromere,
the more frequently the crossing over can occur. Both meiosis I and meiosis II generates four haploid
products, and after one further round of mitosis, eight products are formed and all retained as haploid
together forming a reproductive structure called a perithecium.
Genetic recombination can ultimately lead to the production of traits in the new generation that differ
from those found paternally or maternally. One of the benefits of synapsis (or chromosomal crossover)
is the formation of new

The Importance Of Taking Risks In Beowulf
De Armas, Albert M. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf set his
ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of
Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together
and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he
dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl
despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we
become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that
point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our
sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move
forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the
need of taking risks when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land.
Hrothgar s kingdom, Denmark, is being terrorized by the vicious, bloody thirsty demons, Grendel and
his mother. Sailing across the sea, putting his own life at risk for others is an immense risk that can
certainly lead to Beowulf s demise. The Geats, who idolize Beowulf, see this risk but can comprehend
that Beowulf must go as it is the only way to save the Danes Would sail across the sea to

Although Persepolis is a graphic novel, it portrays issues of politics through the innocence and

forbidden, Satrapi listened to the music and enjoyed expressing it by the way she dressed. Satrapi is
allowed to wear whatever she pleases as her mother is very permissive; Satrapi explains, I only knew
two or three other girls who could go out alone at thirteen (131)Although, alcohol is strictly forbidden,
Satrapi s family drinks alcohol often as it is an essential to their daily lives. Satrapi discloses her, uncle
was the vintner he had built a genuine winemaking lab in his basement (106) where, Mrs. Nasrine,
who was also his cleaning lady, crushed the grapes (106). They are able to relax and drink as long as
they do not get caught which shows Satrapi s family does not believe in restricting an individual from
being able to consume anything they wish. Nevertheless, Satrapi demonstrates they have kept their
sanity through the madness and bombings, while still retaining time to enjoy themselves. In spite of all
the dangers (106), her family threw parties as, without them it wouldn t be psychologically bearable
(106) and without parties they, might as well just bury [themselves] now (106). The parties were ways
of not only celebrating events (like the birth of Satrapi s cousin), but also coping with the bombings
and dangers which lie outside their homes; distract themselves from their problems. Although Satrapi
is surrounded by eminent threats to her safety, she still risks everything to keep her rationality and
normality as being true to herself is most important to her. Overall, Satrapi uses daily life to express

An Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living
The Examined or Unexamined Life Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who lived from 470
BC to 399 BC. Today he is credited with many influential philosophical ideas and quotes, but one in
particular An unexamined life is not worth living . What Socrates means by this quote is that a life
without the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge is no life at all. Socrates reflects on this idea to his
audience of jurors during his trial. The men of Athens felt threatened by Socrates, believing him
spreading his philosophical ideas would disrupt their way of life and order in the city of Athens.
During his trial Socrates pleads his ignorance about the world around him and that all he wishes to do
is to explore his thought and attempt to gain as much knowledge as he can. Throughout his life
Socrates has gained a number of enemies and critics just for being a curious person. He understands
this and preaches it to his jurors at the trial explaining to them that he would venture around the city
conversing with professionals of a certain craft, not for the purpose of exposing their ignorance of the
world around them but to learn for himself along with attempting to teach them to think critically and
on their own. Socrates uses the craftsmen as an example in his defense. He explains that he
approaches the craftsmen to become more knowledgeable about their profession and that they would
be wiser than he was about the subject, he goes on to say the good craftsmen seemed to me to have the

  • 2. The Theme Of Love In The Screwtape Letters In The Screwtape Letters, the topic of love appears continuously throughout the text. In different ways, it is seen that the theme of love is used. Love is commonly understood as a deep feeling for another but C.S describes God s love as so much more. God s love is unchanging and no matter what wrong is committed, he will continue to love. Whether it is seen in the patients love of Christ, his love of his mother, or his love for his romantic partner, they all point to one prominent thing, God. Screwtape and Wormwood continuously fight throughout the book to strip the patient of the things that he loves in his life to ultimately lead him away from the true source of love, which they call the enemy, Christ. C.S Lewis is clear that his opinion is that the all types of love are branched from the love of Christ. Screwtape and Wormwood devise a plan to strip the patient of his love for people and things of this world in order to turn him away from Christ and hand him over to the devil. God s love for humanity is incomprehensible to Screwtape, he thinks that the purpose of life is to better oneself and take control of others. In the book, Screwtape explains how they merely want to absorb the patient for their own personal gain and their desires are compared to God s saying One must face the fact that all the talk about His love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth (Lewis Part VIII). C.S Lewis describes God as one who does not want to take over and destroy but as a God who wants to give, unite and love his people. Throughout the book, we see Screwtape s attempts to rid the patient of love but this job is not as easy as he originally believes it to be. Love is a very impactful thing. The fact that the Patient has great love for his mother stands out as a problem for Wormwood and Screwtape. These two accomplices believe that if they strip the patient of all sources of love that he will turn away from God. Wormwood is provided with a list filled with details on how he can turn the patient s love into anger and annoyance towards his mother. One way that they attempt to do this is by distorting the patient s prayers into prayers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Similarities Between Ancient Rome And Modern Usa People can be naive or tentative, something can be obvious, and you can have an agenda. These words are Latin words used in English today in the United States. The people of Ancient Rome spoke Latin. The modern United States has other similarities to Ancient Rome other than language. Since the modern U.S. and Ancient Rome have many similarities and differences, the lessons from Ancient Rome could help the U.S. to avoid the fall and collapse the Rome experienced. One thing the U.S. could do to avoid the same fall as Ancient Rome is to avoid deficit spending. This was one of the main reasons why Ancient Rome fell. During Ancient Rome, the emperor s command huge building projects. These projects weren t all for the people or the city, but were to show how great the emperors were. The presidents of modern U.S. could learn from the hubris emperors of Ancient Rome. The United States president shouldn t get caught up in their own pride or power, and have to lead for the people. • 4. Introduction Of The Policy Report Essay Brief Introduction of the Policy Report I am a translator who graduated from Capital TongWen Hall (京师同文馆)and who wrote this policy report to Qing Government in the year of 1905, when Yuan Shi Kai (袁世凯) and Zhang Zhi Dong (张之洞) reported to the government to eliminate the Civil Examination. The reason I am writing this policy report is because I see it is necessary to still keep the exam system, but we surely need to change the exam system if we do not eliminate it. The old goal of the Civil Examination is to pick elites from population to work as government official and have a powerful impact on China s social mobility, and the new goal of it will be accommodating science without eliminating the Civil Service Examination. However, I am writing to advise and report to try our best to keep both goals in the exam system. I will talk about the details of why we should not eliminate the exam system, why we need to change the system and what we are going to change in the system and how we are going to implement these changes into the system and try to minimize the contradiction between the old literature elites and new scientific elites. Background The function of Civil Service Examination is for recruitment and admission to the civil service, and for the Ancient Chinese government it mainly functioned as a tool to pick literature elites who are capable to work for the country. It broke the tradition of genealogical monopoly in using people in the government and it certainly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Ut Austin s Office Of Admissions UT Austin s Office of Admissions Personal Connections as a Consultant I selected UT Austin s Office of Admissions for my consultancy project due to the unique opportunity to give back in a way I thought would be helpful. I also hoped to utilize what I learned to increase my understanding of its challenges. My career in higher education began with UT Austin s Office of Admissions in 2006. After six years, I requested a role with greater responsibility, believing I needed more space to grow than the organization would allow at the time. In 2013, Dr. Ishop, vice provost and director of admissions appointed me to oversee undergraduate admissions and recruitment in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS), a pilot, hybrid position between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Admitted students with high need and lower probability of four year completion, were de incentivized from matriculation by way of inadequate funding to support their enrollment. Students most impacted by these changes in policy and practice were disproportionately from underrepresented backgrounds and under resourced secondary schools, creating conflict between admissions practices that focused on crafting a diverse freshmen class and greater institutional emphasis on four year completion. Though I remained closely connected to the Office of Admissions during my time in CNS, I observed, as in outsider, significant staffing changes, compromised staff morale, and increased skepticism the institution held for admissions and recruitment staff. In addition, recruitment efforts were often berated publicly as the cause for matriculation declines by ethnicity, major, or caliber. More than 15 admissions officers, the majority from the recruitment division, resigned due to dissatisfaction and/or lack of confidence in changes in leadership and direction of the institution many of these positions were not replaced. Due to changes in leadership in both admissions and CNS, my position is returning to the Office of Admissions in June 2016. Given the state of the organization, I sought to address the following questions: 1. How is the institution and organizational mission understood by the recruitment ... • 7. Anubis In Ancient Egypt In very ancient Egyptian history, Anubis was once called Duat and was the supreme ruler of the underworld, until the myths of Osiris, the weird green dude, came by and stole that from him. Kind ve unfair, since this pickle guy just straight up stole Anubis s place as ruler. Anubis was reassigned to God of Embalming , which is just depressing. In ancient Egypt, Anubis is being represented by priests wearing masks of jackals, as a tribute to Anubis while mummifying corpses. And, this leads me to another fact about Anubis, his jackal head. The reason this exists is because jackals were commonly found in cemeteries, and the people of ancient Egypt thought they were protecting the dead bodies, so, as time went on (only like 9 years lets just ... • 12. Canadian Wine Industry Essay The Canadian Wine industry is a relatively small player on the worldwide market with a wine export value of approximately $54 million in 2013, making up just 0.15% of global wine exports. This is largely due to Canadian grape grower s inability to compete with producers in countries with more favourable weather conditions for growing grapes. For example, in 2007 Canada used approximately 8,000 hectares of land to grow grapes compared to the EU s 3.5 million hectares, 2.5 million of which were in France alone. Despite Canada s land size, there are only a few regions where the climate allows for a long enough growing season for grapes to mature on the vine. Wine production in Canada is concentrated in Ontario and British Columbia, as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Economies of scale are critical for low priced wine production, but not essential for premium priced wine production, making the premium wine product segmentation a well suited niche for Canada s wine industry. Ice Wine is produced from grapes that were left to freeze on the vine so Canada s climate is an ideal environment for wine producers to capture the Ice Wine market. Given Canada s susceptibility to bad weather, favourable conditions for Ice Wine grape production, and high cost/low production winery economic model, it is no wonder that the wine industry in Canada has grown steadily around the Ice Wine high end product segmentation international niche market. Canadian wine exports totaled 42 million litres in 2013, valued at $54 million; of which 2.2 million litres was premium wine, valued at $36.3 million. Despite an apparent steady growth, the industry is heavily influenced by weather and Canada s growing season so revenue decline can be seen in years where vineyards in Canada produced bad harvests due to weather restrictions. For example, in 2003 2005 Canada experienced severe cold weather conditions, particularly in Ontario, and grape availability was drastically reduced as a result. This had a significant impact on the wine industry in Canada as a whole as well as the export ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Other Side Of Dark By Joan Lowery Nixon Jazmine Barbosa May 30, 2015 Literacy Narrative Most children are not very fond of reading books in school. I was one of those children until I read a novel called, The Other Side of Dark written by Joan Lowery Nixon in the 4th grade. My school had held a book fair during the week of open house. As a child, all children want the toys and games they had at the book fair, not bothering to even glance at the books. My mother told me to look for a book that was not only easy for me to read but something that I would enjoy. I walked around our petite library, which was where the book fair was being held, and scanned the various novels that were displayed until one caught my eye. I was only 10 years old looking for a book without the knowledge of what types of literature that interested me. As I turned the corner at the end of the library I caught a glimpse of a hardcover novel called The Other Side of Dark . On the back of novel I read the synopsis which was about a 13 year old girl who was shot and put into coma until she was 17 years old waking up to discovering that her family was also murdered by the same person who shot her 4 years ago. I was quickly captivated by this summary on the back of the novel and persuaded to read further. Open house was coming to an end and my family and I headed back to our house in La Mirada, California. Participants in such discussion can arrive at an understanding of their differing views and gain respect for the variation that exists, the first steps towards solving the moral questions that seem unsolvable. To lead towards any justifiable outcome, deliberation must abide by certain guidelines of respect, open mindedness and accommodation. At the heart of the debate must be a genuine acknowledgement that opponents views, though disagreeing with our own, are just as morally sound. In granting this we must also approach the discussion with a willingness to change our opinions if discussion reveals a stronger moral position. Deliberation relies on rational participants who do not blindly cling to prior beliefs despite evidence favoring other ones. If, however, deliberators cannot justify leaving their positions after fair consideration, they must make concessions to the opposing side without sacrificing their own views. By eliminating points of contention opponents can reach towards an economy of moral disagreement. In my Final Essay, I m going to answer this question for you, Can justice and forgiveness go hand in hand? There are numerous amounts of examples I will show you, and one of them even includes a film called Simon Birch. Justice is what you fight and earn properly. Revenge is naïve, and can be hurtful, if somebody hurts you, handle it maturely and respectfully. The well known play by Shakespeare, Hamlet; is one example of justice and forgiveness. At the end of the play, Hamlet and Claudius duel to the death. Claudius gets wounded and Hamlet feels like he has won and that he finally got revenge and justice for his father. Sordaria is more specifically studied in many mycology labs to gain a greater understanding of the exceptional formation of as many as 8 haploid ascospores. Normally Sordaria and other fungi exists as a haploid organism, but occasionally when the mycelium from two individuals meet, a diploid zygote is formed. The diploid cell is formed by the fusion of the haploid wildtype and one of the haploid mutant strain. After DNA replication, we are left with two sister chromatids connected with a centromere. During meiosis a process called synapsis occurs. Synapsis allows matching up of two homologous pairs of chromosomes prior to their segregation, and possible genetic recombination amongst them by breaking and then reconnecting to the other chromosome thus allowing for crossing over to occur. The further away a gene is from the centromere, the more frequently the crossing over can occur. Both meiosis I and meiosis II generates four haploid products, and after one further round of mitosis, eight products are formed and all retained as haploid together forming a reproductive structure called a perithecium. Genetic recombination can ultimately lead to the production of traits in the new generation that differ from those found paternally or maternally. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the need of taking risks when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land.
